Aims and overview of the Paper 1 assessment
The Paper 1 examination for May 2022 has been rescheduled for Friday 28th April 2023 (morning session for Exam zones B and C, and afternoon session for Exam zone A). For details of Exam zone, click the link here .
The Paper 1 examination for November 2023 is scheduled for Monday 24th October 2023 (afternoon session). This is the final examination of the Paper 1 in its current format.
Please click the icon below to see the revised timings and weightings that were used for the Paper 1 exams for the M21 to N22 sessions. These adaptations were made by the IB in recognition of the huge challenges that students and teachers faced during the prolonged coronavirus pandemic and school closures.
Revised timings, marks, and weights for IB Business Management exams (May 2021 - Nov 2022)
Revised timings
1 SL candidates answer only one question (not two) from Section A, plus the complusory question in Section B.
2 Section C ( CUEGIS essay) has been removed from the May 2022 Paper 2 exam.
3 HL students answer two questions from Section A and the compulsory question in Section B. Section C of the examination (including unseen data/information for the PU case study) has been removed for M22.
4 Section C (CUEGIS essay) has also been removed from the M21 - N22 Paper 2 exam.

Please note that the IB has announced to Heads of School and DP Coordinators that the above changes will also apply to the examinations in May 2022 and November 2022.
The main aims and overview of the Paper 1 assessment are as follows:
Promotes a holistic approach to IB Business Management
Assesses all 5 topics of the IB BM syllabus
Section C: Extended response (essay) question (HL Only)
Carries 30% in the examination for SL and 35% for HL
Demands extensive analytical and critical thinking skills.
The pre-issued case study
Each exam session, the IB releases a pre-issued case study for the external examinations. This is made available on the PRC (Programme Resources Centre) - speak with your IB Coordinator if you are not sure how to access this resource.
For the May examination, the pre-issued case study is made available in February. For the November examination, the pre-issued case study is available on the PRC in August.
The case study is based on a hypothetical organization, which covers all 5 units in the syllabus. It can act as a useful stimuls for students when revising for both Paper 1 and Paper 2. Note: students must not use this organization for their CUEGIS essay in Paper 2, Section C!
FAQ 1: So, what would happen if a student decided to write about the organization featured in Paper 1 for their CUEGIS essay in Section C of Paper 2?
The CUEGIS essay in Paper 2 must be based on a real-world organization. The organization featured in the Paper 1pre-issued case study is a fictitious business. Therefore, students will be penalized if they choose to use the business organization featured in Paper 1!
Note: Schools are responsible for providing the formulae sheet + a clean copy of the pre-issued case study for students in the external exam. It is therefore useful to practice this by setting students a mock/trial exam for Paper 1.
Paper 1 – Standard Level
Section A: answer 2 of 3 structured questions
10 marks per question; there are no AO3 questions in Section A
Additional unseen additional material in Section B
Section B: answer the compulsory structured question worth 20 marks
Total = 40 marks
Time = 1 hour 15 mins examination
FAQ 2: What happens if a student answers all three questions in Section A?
This is not a recommended strategy! However, in such a case, the examiner will mark all three answers and award the top two marks. However, there is an opportunity cost if answering all three questions in Section A because students are likely to run out of time for Section B of the exam.
Paper 1 – Higher Level
Additional unseen material will be provided in the actual Paper 1 exam
Answer the compulsory question worth 20 marks
HL extension topics may be assessed
Total = 60 marks
Time = 2 hour 15 mins examination
FAQ 3: How do the HL and SL Paper 1 examinations differ from each other?
Sections A and B are very similar for SL and HL, although the latter can include HL extension or HL only topics as mentioned in the Guide (page 54). The main difference is Section C for HL only students, which is a single question worth 20 marks. This requires students to answer a business strategy question based on the pre-released material and the additional stimulus materials in Section B and Section C of the examination.

Business management updates
This page contains the latest updates on the Diploma Programme (DP) business management course.
The new DP business management course will be launched in February 2022. It will be taught in August 2022 for the first time, with assessment taking place in May 2024.
At its heart, the new business management course aims to develop the confidence, creativity and compassion students require to become effective change agents and successful business leaders and entrepreneurs.
Business management is an exciting and dynamic discipline that goes beyond students’ current needs—developing them into tomorrow’s global citizens, prepared for a complex and evolving business environment.
This course prepares students to be global citizens ready to face up to the challenges and opportunities awaiting them in our ever-changing world.
Below you will find an overview of the course. For a technical breakdown of the DP curriculum and assessment methods for this course, read the business management – SL subject brief (PDF, 540 KB) or business management – HL subject brief (PDF, 544 KB) .
Revised conceptual framework
Through the exploration of four interdisciplinary concepts: creativity, change, ethics and sustainability, this new course empowers students to explore these concepts from a business perspective. Each unit in the course begins with conceptual understandings statements. These statements include the key concepts and summarize important ideas and core processes that are central to a unit. Conceptual understanding enhances the student’s overall understanding of the course, making the subject more meaningful. In addition, it further deepens the students understanding of the complex and dynamic business world.
Integrated business management toolkit
The business management toolkit is a central feature in the new course. The toolkit is a set of tools that provide synthesis and connectivity to the course units. These tools can be used by students to analyse and evaluate the syllabus content and can be applied in different disciplinary and interdisciplinary contexts. These tools are to be integrated throughout the teaching and learning of the course.
Inquiry statements
In the new business management course, focus is placed on allowing students to develop and demonstrate higher order thinking and to ensure that they are actively involved in researching business issues. Inquiry ensures that students are actively engaged in their own learning, constructing their own understandings. Teaching and learning the business management skills enriches the student’s understanding of business and enables them to apply these to the concepts, content and contexts. Inquiry statements are present in each unit to aid these understandings.
Future focused assessment
The revised paper 1 is a pre-released statement that specifies the context and theme for the upcoming unseen case study. It assesses students’ knowledge around important contemporary business topics that could not have been anticipated when the guide was written. Paper 1 is the same for both SL and HL students.
Paper 2 is based on unseen stimulus material with a strong quantitative focus requiring in-depth analysis and evaluation using business theories and tools. SL and HL students will sit different examinations, but these will be similar in intent and form.
The new paper 3 is about a social enterprise and requires students to identify and describe a human need and the potential organizational challenges facing the social entrepreneur wanting to meet this need. Students are then required to recommend a plan of action as a strategic way forward for the business.
The revised internal assessment is a business research project in which students apply appropriate business management tools and theories to a real organizational issue or problem using a conceptual lens. It is common for both HL and SL.
What are universities saying about the subject?
"The IB Diploma is one of the most represented at Bocconi, preparing students to continue their academic path at our university…The Business Management course is a good fit for Bocconi in terms of its values on Ethics, Change, Creativity and Sustainability which are all topics at the heart of Bocconi’s Management course. All the core areas of management, from HRM to finance and accounting are covered in depth."

Recommendations
"These case study packets are very detailed and valuable tool for any BM teacher. It is great how Collin has different case studies for each topic of the unit with detailed answers. These have been huge help in my preparation for BM classes and in preparing practice exams and worksheets."
Ben
"Collin’s case studies are great. They have been a huge help in my IB business management prep. He provides interesting case studies for all of the unit content with a detailed answer key. Highly recommend."
Tim
"This is a really great resource that has already saved me ton of time! It can be so hard to find case studies that only test students on what they know in the first unit, and these case studies are geared for each chapter of the I.B. Business Management course. I have paid a lot more for resources that were not half as useful as this pack was. I can't wait to use them for other units as well!"
Alison
"To anyone considering making a purchase, just do it! I took advantage of the offer on the bundle of exam questions, units 1-5. Easy and secure payment, instant download (PDF) and more than one full exam style question for each topic. Mark scheme is straight forward. As it’s for questions based on Paper 2, it has a 10 marker for each subunit. Great resource. Plus as they have been written by Collin, they don’t come with hints of which websites they are from, making cheating less likely. Thank you so much, saved me hours of P&P."
Bradley
"I've been teaching business management for the past four years, and I wanted to reach out to tell you that the cases make an excellent complement to the course: They're well thought out and are clearer in their answers and methodology than other resources that I've used in the past. Best of all, they don't go beyond the content that students are currently on. With this in mind, your cases are great for assessing specific domains of knowledge, and are an excellent complement to exam-style cases, which address topics from the entire course."
