Doctor of Philosophy (PhD)

Program synopsis and training.

Math Graduate Program

The Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in mathematics is the highest degree offered by our program. Graduates will have demonstrated their ability to conduct independent scientific research and contribute new mathematical knowledge and scholarship in their area of specialization. They will be well-supported and well prepared for research and faculty positions at academic institutions anywhere in the world. Owing to their independence, analytic abilities, and proven tenacity, our PhD graduates are also sought after by private and government employers.

Our PhD program offers two tracks, one for Theoretical Mathematics and one for Applied Mathematics . The tracks differ only in the course and  qualifying requirements during the first two years. Applicants are required to decide on one of the tracks and applications will be evaluated subject to respective criteria described below.

Once students have passed their Qualifying Requirements, the two tracks merge and there is no distinction in later examinations and research opportunities. In particular, the candidacy exam for both tracks consists of a research proposal, the graduate faculty available for advising is the same, and the final degree and thesis defense are independent of the initially chosen track.

Expected Preparations for Admission

Competitive applicants to the theoretical track are expected to have strong foundations in Real Analysis and Abstract Algebra, equivalent to our Math 5201 - 5202  and Math 5111 - 5112 sequences.

Expected preparations for the applied track include the equivalents of a rigorous Real Analysis course (such as Math 5201 ), a strong background in Linear Algebra, as well as an introductory course in Scientific Computing.

Besides these basic requirements, competitive applicants in either track submit evidence for a broad formation in mathematics at the upper-division or beginning graduate level. Relevant coursework in other mathematical or quantitative sciences may also be considered, especially for the applied track.

Prior research experiences are not required for either track, and we routinely admit students without significant research background. Nevertheless, applicants are encouraged to include accounts of research and independent project endeavors as well as letters of supervising mentors in order to be more competitive for fellowship considerations. The research component is likely to have greater weight in applications to the applied track.

These prepared documents serve to provide our admission committee with a narrative overview of the applicant's mathematical trajectory. Their primary focus should, therefore, be to enumerate and describe any evidence of mathematical ability and mathematical promise. The information included in the documents should be well-organized, comprehensive, informative, specific, and relevant. This will help our committee to properly and efficiently evaluate the high number of applications we receive each year.

Our Graduate Recruitment Committee will generally  not  consider GRE test scores for this Autumn 2024 admissions. If you have already taken the test, please do not self-report the scores to us. In exceptional circumstances students may have the option to report unofficially.

International students whose native language is not English and are not exempt should score at least a 20 on the Speaking portion of the TOEFL or at least 6.5 on the IELTS Speaking portion.  We also recommend an overall score of at least 95 on TOEFL or at least 7.0 on IELTS.  For a list of exempt countries, please see  https://gpadmissions.osu.edu/intl/additional-requirements-to-apply.html

Qualifying Requirements by Track

The qualifying requirements for the theoretical track are fulfilled by passing our Abstract Algebra course sequence  ( Math 6111 , Math 6112 ) and  our Real Analysis course sequence ( Math 6211 , Math 6212 ), each with at least an A-, or  by passing a respective examination.

The qualifying requirements for the applied track combine a mandatory Scientific Computing course ( Math 6601 ), one of the algebra or analysis courses, and three additional courses chosen from  Math 6602 , Math 6411 ,  Math 6451 , and the courses comprising the algebra and analysis sequences.

The breadth requirements in the applied track are more flexible than in the theoretical track, but also include a mandatory graduate course in a non-math STEM department from an approved list.

You can find more information about our PhD program requirement here .

Most of our graduates continue their careers in academia. Post-doctoral placements in the last two years include, for example, UCLA, Stanford, ETH-Zürich, Brown University, University of Michigan, Northwestern University, University of Vienna, EPF Lausanne, Free University at Berlin, Purdue University, and University of Utah. In recent years our graduates also went to Princeton University, IAS, University of Chicago, Yale University, University of Michigan, Cal-Tech, Northwestern University, University of Texas, Duke University, SUNY Stony Brook, Purdue University, University of North Carolina - Chapel Hill, and Indiana University. Recent non-academic placements include Google, Facebook, Amazon, NSA, and prestigious financial institutions.

Students also have access to training and networking opportunities that prepare them better for careers in private industry and teaching - for example, through the Erdős Institute  - and are regularly offered highly competitive positions in the industry.

Nearly half of the graduate population consists of domestic students coming from both larger universities and smaller liberal arts colleges with a solid math curriculum. And as a program group member of the National Math Alliance , we are dedicated to enhancing diversity in our program and the scientific community. The International students in our program come from all parts of the world with a wide variety of educational backgrounds.

Distance education has become a necessity in most U.S. colleges and universities. This is no surprise given the flexibility it offers students who work full time, travel for a living, or have a family. Many seeking online graduate programs do so because it permits them to continue working while they earn their degree. Students don’t have to make long commutes in unbearable traffic, attend class at inconvenient times, or pay to move or live near campus. Instead, those in online PhD degree programs enjoy freedom and work towards their degree when it best fits their schedule.

The  Ohio Master’s Network Initiatives in Education  (OMNIE) project is one state program that makes online PhD programs in Ohio an option for residents. OMNIE is an organization that pools university, business, and government resources together to make prospective education options a reality. OMNIE’s first project was to make master’s-level distance education programs in speech-language pathology an option for Ohio residents. The goal of the program was to not only give residents options, but to allow professionals in this occupation to earn their degree while maintaining their jobs.

Your Online PhD In Ohio

One of the universities granting students online PhD degrees is the  Union Institute & University  (UIU). It offers three online PhD program options as well as one Doctor of Psychology and two Doctor of Education (Ed.D.) options. UIU’s Ed.D. program is offered with specializations in Educational Leadership and Higher Education. Such a degree could be highly useful in obtaining a job in teaching or administration at Ohio State University (OSU), which is one of the state’s largest employers. OSU is a land-grant university and has six campuses located throughout Ohio.

UIU also offers two Ph.D. specialties that Ohio residents may find useful in terms of securing a job upon graduation. These specialties include Public Policy & Social Change as well as Ethical & Creative Leadership. Ohio is home to a robust manufacturing industry as well as the State of Ohio Department of Corrections and Procter & Gamble Co. The Public Policy & Social Change specialization offered by UIU may prepare graduates for upper-level positions at the State of Ohio Department of Corrections. Meanwhile, the Ethical & Creative Leadership specialization may prepare students for upper-management careers in Ohio’s manufacturing industry and at Proctor and Gamble Co., a Fortune 500 company headquartered in Cincinnati.

Ohio State graduate programs featured in new U.S. News & World Report rankings

Rankings highlight university’s graduate program achievements.

The Ohio State University’s graduate and professional programs continue to rank among the best in the nation and the state, according to the U.S. News & World Report 2024-25 edition of America’s Best Graduate Schools.

Several Ohio State colleges reported degrees and specialty programs in the top 10 of the latest edition. The rankings place the College of Nursing ’s traditional Master of Science (MS) program No. 1 among public institutions in the nation, and the college’s Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) program again ranked among the country’s top 20.

The College of Nursing’s in-person MS program ranked No. 4 overall – up from eighth last year. This is the sixth straight year that the MS degree program has ranked among the nation’s top 10.

The Fisher College of Business ’ Working Professional MBA was ranked fifth among part-time programs at public colleges and universities (10th overall) – marking the third time in the last five years the WPMBA was selected as a top 10 program.

“Ohio State’s graduate and professional programs continue to excel across a broad range of disciplines, which is a testament to our university’s land-grant tradition and commitment to preparing future leaders, scholars and practitioners,” said Karla Zadnik, interim executive vice president and provost. “I am thrilled to see these programs recognized for their academic excellence.”

U.S. News ’ rankings of graduate and professional programs cover just a small portion of the programs offered at Ohio State, and not all programs are ranked each year. Ohio State enrolls more than 14,000 graduate and professional students in 102 doctoral and 127 master’s programs.

Below are some highlights from U.S. News ’ 2024-25 rankings of Ohio State graduate programs, by college.

The College of Arts and Sciences has one of its natural and mathematical science graduate programs ranked in the top 30 this year – computer science (27), and two of its social and behavioral sciences graduate programs ranked in the top 20 this year – audiology (9) and speech language pathology (14).

The College of Education and Human Ecology is ranked No. 21 nationwide overall in graduate education programs, up four spots over last year. In its specialty programs, seven continue to rank in the top 10 nationwide. These include educational administration (6), curriculum and instruction (7), student counseling (7), elementary teacher education (8), secondary teacher education (8), educational psychology (9) and higher education administration (9). Two more specialty programs both ranked as No. 22: educational policy and special education.

Fisher’s full-time MBA program saw significant improvement in its standings in the annual rankings, climbing to No. 11 among public institutions (No. 30 overall).

The  John Glenn College of Public Affairs  moved up in the rankings from 19th to 16th, marking the college’s 10th year within the top 10% of public affairs graduate professional degree programs on the list. The college was also ranked in seven specialty areas: public management and leadership (7), nonprofit management (9), local government (18), social policy (19), public policy analysis (20), urban policy (22) and public finance (25).

In the College of Medicine , two clinical doctorate programs in the School of Health and Rehabilitation Sciences moved up in the rankings this year, reaffirming their reputation for excellence – physical therapy advanced to No. 8 and occupational therapy to No. 11.

The Moritz College of Law remains a high-ranking institution at 26th overall out of 196 accredited law schools and ninth nationally among all public law schools. The college’s  program on dispute resolution was ranked first in the nation, and nine other programs rank in the top 50 nationally: criminal law (15), health law (15), constitutional law (29), legal writing (32), business and corporate law (35), contracts and commercial law (36), intellectual property law (44), international law (45) and tax law (49).

The College of Pharmacy ranks first in the state and fourth in the nation among all schools of pharmacy. This continues the college’s more than decade-long tradition as a top 10 ranked program, moving up from seventh in 2020.

The College of Public Health , at 29 overall, is among the highest ranked colleges and programs of public health in the nation, and first in Ohio. For the first time, three specialty programs within the College of Public Health are recognized: biostatistics (22); epidemiology (25) and health policy and management (17). U.S. News & World Report previously ranked the college’s MHA program eighth in the nation.

The College of Social Work ranked 12th out of 366 programs nationally, ranking in the top 3% of all programs. The college is also tied for No. 1 in the state, 7th among all public programs in the nation and second among the 10 programs in the Big Ten.

CWRU, UC, OSU, Ursuline named in top 50 graduate school program rankings by U.S. News & World Report

C LEVELAND, Ohio - Multiple Ohio universities landed in the top 50 rankings for best graduate programs in various fields, according to the new 2024-2025 U.S. News and World Report Best Graduate Programs Rankings released Tuesday.

Ohio State University was the big winner in Ohio, tying for the No. 4 best overall nursing school in the country with the University of Pennsylvania and Vanderbilt University in Tennessee. It improved four sports from the previous year.

In addition, OSU ranked No. 21 for the overall graduate education program, No. 26 for the overall graduate law program, and No. 30 for the overall graduate business program, which is the top Ohio school in each category.

The only other Ohio schools to be in the top 50 rankings in one of the four categories were Case Western Reserve University (No. 17 in Nursing), the University of Cincinnati (No. 41 in Nursing), and Ursuline College (No. 41 in Nursing).

For last year’s rankings (2023-2024), visit this link .

Specializations within graduate programs

Several Ohio State graduate programs also ranked among the top 10 programs in the country in specialized categories.

For full-time MBA programs, Ohio State ranked sixth in supply chain management, eighth in production operations and ninth in accounting. John Carroll University tied for No. 14 in international business.

OSU also tied for No. 10 for part-time MBA programs in the country.

In education, OSU ranked sixth in educational administration and supervision, seventh in curriculum and instruction, seventh in student counseling, eighth in elementary teacher education, eighth in secondary teacher education, ninth in education psychology and ninth in higher education administration programs.

CWRU ranked fourth in adult primary care nurse practitioners.

Change in methodology

For business programs, Best Business Schools ranking of full-time MBA programs placed more emphasis on earnings through a new ranking factor that assessed how each school’s post-graduate salaries across different professions compared with other schools’ post-graduate salaries in those professions.

U.S. News published updated rankings of graduate programs in audiology, occupational therapy, physical therapy, pharmacy, nurse-midwifery, and speech-language pathology for the first time since 2020. Social work was ranked for the first time since 2022, and nurse anesthesia was ranked for the first time since 2016. These rankings are all based solely on reputational data.

Rankings for medical schools and engineering schools will be released at a later date.

View the chart below for the complete overall graduate school program rankings list. Lower-ranked schools are grouped together. Some mobile users may need to use this link .

A previous version of this story misstated that OSU was No. 4 in Business.

CSU has allowed me to achieve what I thought would not be possible: to work full time while earning my gifted endorsement to better empower my own teaching philosophy and equip a teaching staff with knowledge and strategies on how to best serve this dynamic population. As a principal continuously looking to grow, the courses offered by CSU have challenged my thinking to be more inclusive of a gifted population and advocate on their behalf. Working through coursework at my schedule has been convenient, and I feel well-equipped to serve gifted students as a direct result from a gifted endorsement program that continues to be flexible and affordable. Promoting the Cleveland EDGE: Excellence and Diversity in Gifted Education is easy as this program will ultimately help my students become leaders within their areas of talent, explore curricular options that I did not know were available, and continue to advocate for the inclusion of students of all backgrounds in programming options.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can i apply for the program if i don’t have a teaching license/ am not working in schools.

This program is designed for working teachers or administrators, and many of the assignments require that you practice the strategies and concepts within a school environment. If you don’t have a teaching license, we can work with you through other programs to get you certified and add on your gifted endorsement. If you have a license, but aren’t currently working in schools, we can work with you to obtain an experience that will allow you to complete the requirements of the program and courses.

Do I have to do the Master’s degree if I only want the endorsement?

No. The endorsement is 15 credit hours, and you can stop there if you like. However, if you decide that you do want to get your Master’s degree, those 15 hours of the endorsement will count towards the 30 hours of the Master's in curriculum and instruction with a concentration in gifted education. You would need to finish an additional 15 credit hours to finish the Master’s degree.

I already have a Master’s degree. Do I still need this program?

Yes. You would still need to take the 15 hours focused in gifted education for the endorsement. We are looking into the possibility of advanced opportunities beyond the Master’s degree.

I am not teaching in Ohio, but another state. Can I still take this program?

You will need to check with your State Department and see if these courses would count towards your state requirements for teaching gifted children and/or gifted endorsement. Because this program is aligned with the NAGC/CEC national standards for gifted education, there is a good chance, but each state has different requirements. We focus on the laws and expectations for teachers in Ohio, but if you are from another state, assignments can be adapted for your environment.
