We created this ranking of the best PhD behavior analysis programs to showcase some of the top degrees in the country. We looked to the National Center for Education Statistics to find schools offering graduate level programs in ABA. We narrowed our focus to schools offering a PhD. We then awarded points based on factors like student/faculty ratio, average graduate tuition rate and whether they were ABAI accredited. We felt ABAI accreditation was important since it is an indicator of a quality training program.

Applied Behavior Analysis PhD
Ph.D. in Special Education: Applied Behavior Analysis
The Teaching as Applied Behavior Analysis Ph.D. incorporates an approach to teacher training in which all instruction used by teachers is based on scientific evidence and the use of scientific procedures to fit the appropriate science-based practices to individual students’ varied learning and language developmental needs.
Research is a central component of the training—both the applications of research using science based tactics and measurement, and the generation of new research. The focus of the MA program is in the application of scientific procedures in classrooms, while Ph.D. students engage in research throughout their program, building on their research training in the MA, culminating in a dissertation that identifies and investigates a topic related to our mission.
Dissertations must make contributions to both the applied and basic science . The faculty and the students generate a substantial body of research leading to publications and presentations at international scientific conferences each year and this is a key component of the Ph.D. training. Programmatic research is conducted in the following areas: effective classroom practices, language/verbal development interventions that result in children learning to learn in different ways, observational learning, and systems wide scientific approaches to education.
Students who already hold M.A. Degrees from other institutions must take the twelve M.A. core courses because the core prepares them with the means to be successful in completing milestone Ph.D. requirements. Ph.D. students also need to be dually certified in New York State for teaching children from birth to grade 6.

Research and Evaluation Emphasis:
Students with excellent potential as researchers and theoreticians who are interested in scholarly careers in special education, education, and related social sciences may apply for the Ph.D. degree program, which represents the highest level of achievement in the Arts and Sciences. This degree program is administered jointly by Teachers College and the graduate faculty of Columbia University.

The Teaching as Applied Behavior Analysis M.A. and Ph.D. programs incorporate an approach to teacher training in which all instruction used by teachers is based on scientific evidence and the use of scientific procedures to fit the appropriate science-based practices to individual students’ varied learning and language developmental needs. Students accepted into the program are placed in paid teacher assistant positions (M.A. students and Ph.D. students taking the M.A. core) or paid teacher positions (Ph.D. students who have completed at least 3 semesters of the M.A. core) in schools and classrooms that practice teaching as applied behavior analysis. The training of teachers is also based on scientifically tested procedures. Teacher trainees are taught until they master the science and its application with all children from 2 years through grade 6.

Our Ph.D. candidate teachers play a significant role in our record of providing measurably superior instruction and bridging the educational gap.
Program objectives:
Use single-subject and group-design research to evaluate all aspects of an educational system, including educational interventions for children, staff and parent training, and teacher training.
Train and supervise classrooms and schools such that children are well-behaved and motivated to learn, using positive and non-coercive practices.
Master the existing science of learning as applied to the varied needs of children, master teaching others to implement the science of learning independently, and empirically evaluate the effects of such training.
Master protocols to identify and induce missing language developmental cusps and capabilities, and master teaching of others to implement these protocols and empirically evaluate the effects of protocols and a child’s development.
Master how to use key educational standards and how to match existing tested curricula and tested teaching practices to categories of students and individual students, and master how to teach others to implement these competencies and empirically evaluate the effects of such training.
Teach others how to measure all students’ progress continuously and directly in achieving standards and new developmental stages and empirically evaluate such training.
Empirically evaluate teaching practices when initial best practices are not successful with children.
Teach others to scientifically analyze the source of student learning problems and empirically evaluate such training.
Draw on evidence from behavior analysis, cognitive learning, developmental research, special education research, reading/writing literacy research and implement procedures in accordance with Applied Behavior Analysis and teaching as a science.
Teach others to teach children to be self-learners and empirically evaluate such interventions.
Design functional curricula building on the theory and science of verbal behavior, radical behaviorism, and the foundations of pragmatism. Teach others to design functional curricula and empirically examine the effectiveness of functional curricula.

The behavior analysis graduate program at Florida Tech offers a PhD for students looking to pursue further study in this discipline. The Association for Behavior Analysis International Accreditation Board accredits Florida Tech's School of Behavior Analysis on-campus graduate programs, including the PhD Behavior Analysis. The BACB® has approved the Concentrated Supervised Fieldwork in Behavior Analysis as meeting the fieldwork requirements for the experiential component of the BCBA® examination.
Florida Tech's on-campus master's-level applied behavior analysis programs (applied behavior analysis, organizational behavior management, and the dual program) provide students with the requirements to take the BCBA examination immediately upon completion of graduate school. If a doctoral student has completed a master's degree but is not a Board-Certified Behavior Analyst® (BCBA) or does not meet the supervision requirements to sit for the BCBA examination, Florida Tech offers coursework in Concentrated Supervised Fieldwork in Behavior Analysis.
Dedicated Faculty
Professors in the applied behavior analysis programs are dedicated, productive researchers and practitioners with a commitment to developing the field of behavior analysis. Training the next generation of behavior analytic researchers and practitioners, the faculty is made up of Board Certified Behavior Analysts. Students receive one-on-one attention from professors who work alongside them in research and through client interaction. A close student-professor culture in the applied behavior analysis programs creates a professional environment where students are viewed as research professionals and colleagues and demonstrate competency in research, teaching, supervision and consultation.
Research Opportunities
Florida Tech professors perform applied research outside of their teaching responsibilities working in settings such as clinical treatment or organizational consulting. Ph.D. students participate in this research, often publishing research articles in respected ABA journals. Leading training sessions for educators on classroom behavior problems and working with children and their families to provide assessment, training and behavior therapy at the Scott Center for Autism Treatment are examples of how Florida Tech's applied behavior analysis programs provide real-world experience.

The School of Psychology houses classrooms, human research areas, observation and treatment rooms, computer facilities, two conference rooms, and a student workroom/lounge. In addition, the Scott Center for Autism Treatment is located directly on Florida Tech's campus providing real-world experience and research with children with autism and related disorders. The Society for Performance Management and Behavior Analysis Student Association are also available resources for students in applied behavior analysis programs.

Though behavior analysts are often best known for advances in autism treatment and support, the field offers a variety of options for graduates with a PhD in behavior analysis. Alumni of Florida Tech behavior analysis programs reside around the world, working in businesses, schools, clinics, residential treatment centers, group homes, and private practice.
This same success is seen by the doctoral graduates, who have successfully obtained post-doctoral fellowships at prestigious institutions (such as the University of Nebraska Medical School/Munroe Meyer Institute) or been hired as university faculty members. Other graduates have obtained behavior analysis jobs as consultants or program directors.
These applied behavior analysis jobs involve working with children, individuals with autism, people with schizophrenia or intellectual disabilities. Graduates also work with employees in both for-profit and nonprofit organizations in business, industry, speech-language pathology, animal behavior and training, and special education.
Diverse Career Options
Though applied behavior analysts are often best known for advances in autism treatment and support, graduates find work in a wide variety of fields working as consultants, independent contractors and as Board Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA) professionals. On average, graduates of a behavior analysis graduate program with a PhD have higher salaries and employment rates than those with master's or bachelor degrees, according to the US Department of Labor's Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS). Some doctoral graduates also continue into academia as professors to teach the next generation of students.
The Occupational Outlook Handbook , published by the BLS, provides detailed information about hundreds of occupations, including, entry-level education, overall working environment, and employment prospects. According to the Bureau, overall employment in psychology careers such as applied behavior analysis jobs are projected to grow 12% through 2022. This includes a higher demand for school psychologists to work with students, particularly those with special needs, learning disabilities, and behavioral issues. Jobs will also include professionals who can assess and counsel students, as well as study how in-school and out-of-school factors affect learning.
Applied behavior analysis (ABA) jobs include:
- Private practice as a certified ABA providing early intervention services to children with autism
- ABA in a school district assisting teachers to manage students with problem behavior
- ABA in a group home
- ABA consultant to companies focusing on improving employee performance

Applied Behavior Analysis Training at the Doctoral Level
The mission of Florida Tech's applied behavior analysis training is to develop PhD behavior-analytic practitioners and consultants who have obtained their BCBA certification and contribute to behavioral research and practice.
Applied behavior analysis training at the doctoral level includes participation in a high-degree of behavior-based research projects under the mentorship of a faculty member. Many professors are published authors and experts on many facets of applied behavior analysis, such as:

- Sports psychology
- Organizational behavior management
As noted above, students participate in such research as assessing and treatment behavior problems, teaching methods for individuals with disabilities while working with faculty members in ongoing research at the Scott Center for Autism Treatment.
In addition, teams of faculty and students form to study topics in behavioral analysis, presenting their research at state and national conferences, such as the annual meeting of the Florida Association for Behavior Analysis (FABA) and the Association for Behavior Analysis International (ABAI). Graduates of the applied behavior analysis graduate programs at the doctoral level are well prepared to pursue academic positions, to continue active research programs and to effectively manage behavior analysts under their supervision, both in research and practice.

Applied Behavior Analysis PhD Programs
The Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in applied behavior analysis is a research-based program designed to produce researchers, scientists-practitioners, and university faculty in applied behavior analysis (ABA).
Doctorate-prepared applied behavior analysts work in business and industry, education, and public policy, while some continue to work as practitioners of applied behavior analysis.
The Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Applied Behavior Analysis
A doctorate in applied behavior analysis provides advanced-level education and training in the discovery, translation, and application of newly acquired knowledge in behavior analysis, aimed at solving socially significant problems of human behavior through applied interventions.
Many programs provide the opportunity to:
- Conduct clinical and research training alongside experts in the field of applied behavior analysis
- Specialize in areas such as autism, community outreach, or severe behavior disorders
- Engage in teaching experiences
The Association for Behavior Analysts International (ABAI) accredits doctoral degree programs in applied behavior analysis.
PhD in Applied Behavior Analysis programs consist of about 60 semester hours of coursework, research, and dissertation credits and take about three years to complete.
Many programs are offered either through an online format or as blended campus/online format, allowing busy professionals and those not residing near a campus-based program the opportunity to complete the program through an interactive, web-based format.
Admission Requirements
Admission into a PhD in Behavior Analysis is highly selective and competitive. Most programs demand, at a minimum, a master’s degree in applied behavior analysis, psychology, or special education, along with a minimum GPA (usually 3.5 or above) in your master’s degree coursework.
Other requirements for admission often include:
- Current BCBA® certification from the Behavior Analysis Certification Board
- A writing sample – Usually your master’s thesis or research-based paper from a graduate course
- A personal statement or essay describing your reasons for pursuing a PhD in ABA
- Personal interview
- Letters of recommendation who can attest to your ability to complete a doctoral program successfully
- Minimum GRE scores
- Resume/curriculum vitae describing your post-master’s/BCBA® professional experience
A PhD in Applied Behavior Analysis requires students to display proficiency in three areas:

Most programs require students to complete all core and elective requirements before they can attain the status of doctoral candidate and receive approval to proceed with the programs’ research and practical experience requirements.
Practicum and Research Requirements
The research and practical experience requirements of a PhD in Applied Behavior Analysis may include a college teaching practicum, a research tool presentation, a research presentation, and a doctoral dissertation.
Before submitting a dissertation proposal, most students are required to complete a research project in applied behavior analysis under supervision of their doctoral advisor. Students are generally required to publish their research paper or present it at a professional conference.
Independent work and internships at local partner sites are often part of a doctoral program in ABA. Clinical experiences allow students to partake in research, teaching, and clinical practice experiences.
Dissertation Requirements
The third year of a doctoral degree in applied behavior analysis will be spent working on your doctoral dissertation. Under the direction of a faculty mentor, you must develop an empirical thesis/project and defend it in an oral examination.
Doctoral Degrees in Applied Behavior Analysis Leading to the BCBA®-D Certification
The doctoral designation (-D) for the BCBA® certification allows BCBA®s to demonstrate they have successfully completed a doctoral program in applied behavior analysis.
To qualify for the BCBA®-D designation , you must hold a current BCBA® certification and meet ONE of the following requirements:
- Complete a doctoral program accredited by the Association for Behavior Analysts International (ABAI)
- Passed at least four behavior-analytic courses as part of your doctoral program; OR
- Were formally advised by a faculty member who held the BCBA® designation; OR
- Authored two peer-reviewed journal articles that were behavior-analytic in nature
- Have at least 1,800 hours of experience in ABA during a postdoctoral fellowship or postdoctoral employment experience that included ongoing education in ABA under the supervision of a BCBA®
- Authored two peer-reviewed journal articles that were behavior-analytic in nature and were completed as part of your training experience

Program overview.
Through the integration of theory and practice, the 61 credit hour post-master’s PhD in Behavior Analysis program provides a solid foundation in the philosophy, science, and application of behavior analysis, promoting an interdisciplinary and translational approach to clinical practice.
At the PhD level, the program expands upon the knowledge and skills learned in the MS program by strengthening students’ research, clinical, and leadership skills. The aim is to prepare students for a rewarding career in the rapidly growing field of Applied Behavior Analysis. Doctoral graduates are lead practitioners and researchers in educational, clinical, and business settings who can successfully respond to the diverse needs of consumers of behavioral interventions and therapies, and who can teach and mentor students of behavior analysis in university settings.
In addition, students may specialize in the expanding field of Organizational Behavior Management and qualify for a credential in Culturo-Behavior Science.
Program Philosophy
The PhD Behavior Analysis program is designed to prepare students in a wide variety of specialization areas within ABA. Although it is common for lay people to assume that ABA is relevant only to people with autism or other developmental disabilities, behavior analysis is applied to numerous populations and problems. Thus, in the program, students can focus not only on issues related to the assessment and treatment of Autism Spectrum Disorders, but also on the assessment and treatment of severe behavior problems, instructional design, organizational behavior management, and applications with non-traditional populations such as geriatrics, people with traumatic brain injury, and regular and special education. Thus, while ABA techniques apply to people with disabilities, they are just as useful to people in the general population.
The PhD Behavior Analysis program provides training to students related to all four domains of Behavior Analysis (i.e., Philosophy, Experimental Analysis of Behavior, Applied Behavior Analysis, and Service Delivery). Further, the programs and curricula are designed to infuse the scientist-practitioner model across these domains and teach students to be consumers of new research findings, evaluators of their own interventions and programs using empirical methods, and researchers, producing new data from their own settings and reporting these data to the applied and scientific community.
In summary, the PhD Behavior Analysis program’s mission is to provide students with the scientific, analytical, and conceptual tools they need to provide effective, ethical, and practical behavior-analytic interventions and to contribute to the research agenda as applied to the diverse populations that they serve. The vision of the program is to provide the most comprehensive and effective graduate training in behavior analysis, and to that end, the faculty provide the students with the most up-to-date information and research, and encourage critical analysis of the research with an emphasis on using it to drive practice. The behavior analysis doctoral program emphasizes the investment in contributing to research and/or to become clinical leaders in our field. Because behavior analysis is based on a rapidly developing and evolving behavioral technology grounded in research, the knowledge base is constantly changing. It is our Mission in the PhD Behavior Analysis program at The Chicago School to remain at the forefront of the development of this field.

Application to The Chicago School of Professional Psychology’s PhD Behavior Analysis program is open to any person who has earned a master’s degree as specified below from a regionally accredited institution and who meets other entrance requirements.
The school admits applicants whom it judges to possess sufficient academic aptitude, as well as the emotional and social maturity to function effectively as a professional behavior analyst. Applicants will be judged on their overall ability to engage in graduate work. Application requirements to be considered for admission include:

Applicants for admission to the PhD Behavior Analysis program must have a master’s degree that includes a master’s thesis or equivalent and one of the following:
- Board Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA ® ) certification in good standing
- Completion of an ABAI approved degree having an ABAI approved Verified Course Sequence
- Completion of an ABAI Tier 1 or Tier 2a approved program
Applicant Notification
The Chicago School reviews applications on a rolling basis. Once review begins, complete applications will be considered by the Admission Committee and applicants will be notified regarding the admission decision. The Chicago School does not share information or provide any feedback regarding admission decisions.
If a student is offered admission and in order to secure a place in the incoming class, a non-refundable tuition deposit of $250 will be required by the deposit deadline indicated in the offer of admission. The non-refundable deposit will be applied in full toward the student’s tuition upon enrollment.

Ethical Guidelines
Students are expected to learn and to follow the ethical guidelines of the American Psychological Association, the Association for Behavior Analysis International, and the Behavior Analyst Certification Board® during and after their work at The Chicago School. A class in ethics is required at the Masters level, and student adherence to ethical codes is evaluated both formally and informally.
Professional Development Group
All PhD Behavior Analysis students are required to enroll in an Advanced Professional Development Group during their first semester or term in the program. Their instructor serves as their academic advisor until they select a dissertation chair. The Advanced Professional Development Group class is graded on a pass/fail basis.
Comprehensive Examination
Students are required to take and pass a written comprehensive examination and an oral defense before they are allowed to propose their dissertation research to the Institutional Review Board (IRB). Students have two chances to pass the comprehensive examination (a third attempt may be allowed under extenuating circumstances). When the written and oral components of the comprehensive exam are passed, the student becomes a Doctoral Candidate and can proceed to their dissertation research.
Dissertation
Students are also required to complete a dissertation. The dissertation must be a data-based empirical evaluation that marks an original contribution to the published literature. The PhD Behavior Analysis course sequence facilitates student completion of the dissertation with a carefully designed course sequence that has the necessary steps toward dissertation completion embedded into the required coursework. Students receive detailed information about the dissertation process and related requirements during their first year in the program.
Students may not begin work on their dissertation unless they have completed a thesis either as part of a master’s degree program or in Research Experience I-III ( PA 660 PA 661 PA 662 ).

The Caldwell University on-campus ABAI accredited Ph.D. in Applied Behavior Analysis program was designed to prepare students for high-level employment within areas where there are growing demands for competent professionals with expertise in applied behavior analysis: namely, developmental services, special education, mental health, and academia.
ABA Program Objectives
Ph.D. students are required to show proficiency in coursework, applied practicum, and dissertation research. The core curriculum for the Ph.D. in ABA program focuses on (a) the advanced principles and procedures of basic and applied behavior analysis practice and research, (b) the application of behavior analysis and behavioral support in complex environments (i.e., home, school, work, other community settings, and institutional settings), (c) supervision and training of others in behavior analysis, (d) conceptual and theoretical underpinnings of advanced topics in behavior analysis, and (e) development and completion of independent research in behavior analysis.

Situated on our campus, the Center provides assessment and intervention services for individuals with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and other developmental disabilities. GRADUATE PROGRAM IN APPLIED BEHAVIOR ANALYSIS
Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) is a well developed scientific discipline that entails the comprehensive use of empirically validated principles of learning to develop, implement, and evaluate practical strategies to enhance the abilities and self-direction skills of both children and adults in the context of community, home, and educational settings. Although the principles and procedures developed within ABA have been successfully applied in areas such as psychology, traditional and special education, business, industrial safety, addiction, self-management, and rehabilitation, ABA has been most publicly successful in its application to skill development and behavior change for people with developmental disabilities, such as those with autism spectrum disorder and intellectual developmental disorder.

RETENTION FOR ALL PROGRAMS IN ABA DEPARTMENT
Students may only earn one grade below B for the graduate level courses. This course may be repeated to earn a higher letter grade. Any student who receives a grade below B in a second graduate level course will be dismissed from the program.

As the capstone requirement for the Ph.D. in Applied Behavior Analysis, students must complete the courses Dissertation in ABA I, II, and III (ABA 890, ABA 891, and ABA 892), and additional dissertation courses, if necessary. In these classes, students will complete a comprehensive survey of the research literature in a particular area within applied behavior analysis, write this as a formal publication-quality literature review paper, and then orally defend it. Students will then design and conduct an original experimental research study using the principles of ABA. The dissertation research study will be written in American Psychological Association (APA) format. Following approval of the written component, both the dissertation proposal and the completed dissertation will be orally defended to a committee of faculty members and outside professionals. The goal of the completed dissertation is to generate scholarly work that will be of professional publication quality and that is a substantial and innovative contribution to the field in terms of theoretical implications or clinical applications.

Note: The application deadline for the Ph.D. program is December 1, and applicants are only accepted for the fall semester.
- Bachelor’s degree or higher, preferably in ABA or a related field such as psychology, education, or special education
- Official undergraduate/graduate transcripts
- Minimum GPA of 3.6 in bachelor’s/master’s degree coursework
- Official transcripts of their bachelor’s/master’s degree coursework
- Three letters of recommendation that specifically speak to the likelihood of the applicant’s success in a doctoral degree program
- Writing sample: a research-based paper in applied behavior analysis or a related area of psychology of at least ten pages that was previously submitted as part of a course. If applicable, the applicant’s master’s thesis is preferable.
- Three to five page personal statement describing reasons for pursuing Ph.D. in ABA at Caldwell University, current research interests, and preferred faculty member with whom to study (including reasons for this choice).

Course Code : ABA 510
Focuses on the application of a systematic and empirical approach to the study of psychology. Topics will include: scientific method, pseudoscience, types of experimental research, variable definition, validity threats, control strategies, experimental design, ethical issues, how to present research, statistical application, and additional material. Students engage in discussion, conduct relevant empirical research, and write research reports in the American Psychological Association ABA 811 Research Practicum in ABA II (3) This course will provide additional research experience to students who have already taken ABA 809 Research Practicum in ABA I. Students can register for 1 – 3 credits per semester with a maximum of 3 credits of the research practicum in applied behavior analysis counting towards graduation. Students will be expected to devote 10 hours per week per credit towards the research practicum. Some of those hours may be spent collecting and analyzing the data, conducting literature searches, and writing a manuscript based on the data. It is assumed that most research practica will be supervised by the student’s dissertation advisor but the student and dissertation advisor may agree that another faculty member is best qualified to supervise the research. Students will be expected to meet frequently with their practicum supervisor during the semester and will be expected to complete a research paper written in APA-style by the end of the semester. The research paper should be generalization, shaping, fading, prompting, concept formation, stimulus equivalence, respondent learning, conditioned reinforcement, schedules of reinforcement, and behavioral definitions.

Provides an introduction to behavior analysis and the learning principles on which ABA is founded. Everyday behavior and how it changes is explained by learning principles derived from an analysis of scientific research. Students learn procedures that derive from behavioral principles and practice implementing those procedures in computer simulations. Principles and procedures in the course curriculum include reinforcement, extinction, differential reinforcement, punishment, stimulus control, issues of discrimination and generalization, shaping, fading, prompting, concept formation, stimulus equivalence, respondent learning, conditioned reinforcement, schedules of reinforcement, and behavioral definitions.

Examines the use of the scientific method to evaluate assessment and intervention techniques in behavior analysis. Topics include measurement techniques, single-subject experimental design, selection of dependent and independent variables, graphical presentation and evaluation of results, ethics pertaining to human subjects and treatment implementation, and ways of communicating research results. Principles and procedures involved in the experimental analysis of reinforcement schedules, stimulus control, and stimulus equivalence are included.

This course is designed to introduce graduate students to the basic principles of behavior analysis. Applied behavior analysis (ABA) is an overall management system. It is important to understand concepts of applied behavior analysis and also how to apply those concepts across various learning environments and skill levels to become effective and efficient analyzers of the principles of learning. This course has a 12-hour field component.

This course, which is a continuation and expansion on the principles learned in ABA 537 Intro to ABA, will examine strategies to promote generalization of learned skills, prompting strategies, teaching self-management, group-oriented contingencies, shaping techniques, behavior chains, motivational systems, and other topics. This course prepares students for the ethical and professional practice of applied behavior analysis. Students will learn about the foundations of professional and ethical behavior needed to insure a high quality of practice in behavior analysis. Included will be discussions of evaluating behavior change, collaborating with other professionals, relationships with clients and colleagues, professional representation of oneself and the field of behavior analysis, dissemination of professional values, the Behavior Analyst Certification Board Guidelines for Responsible Conduct. Effective writing is an important skill to communicate the findings of a scientific discipline to other professionals and to the mainstream population. Course content will include the function of the written word, the logic of scientific vs. popular writing, APA Style, writing article summaries, writing a Literature review, developing thesis and dissertation proposals, the publication process, writing critiques, writing effective PowerPoint presentations, writing for popular media sources, the basics of grant writing, and developing the curriculum vitae. In this course, students will learn to analyze critically their own written products as well as those of colleagues and student peers. Students will write regularly, both in-class and on their own time, across a number of assignments, for practice and review.

Functional behavioral assessment (FBA) and analysis are important links between simple descriptions of behavior and treatment planning. The course will trace the historical development of functional assessment and functional analysis from conceptual contributions in the 1950s through the development of functional analytic techniques in the 1980s, to the present widespread application of these techniques. It explores a range of assessment techniques to use in a variety of settings, from home to school and clinic. The relationship between assessment techniques and the delivery of the least restrictive but most effective behavioral intervention will also be discussed. Students will acquire expertise in a wide range of indirect and direct assessment techniques.

This advanced course will provide an overview of contemporary research and practice in the field of OBM, also referred to as Perofrmance Management. OBM is seen by some as a behaviorally based area of specialization within the broad field of Industrial-Organizational Psychology.OBM is most closely aligned with the area of organizational behavior and personnel/ human resource management. When ABA is applied to organizational problems such as training, afety, productivity, and quality deficits, the collective set of procedures is term "OBM". The purpose of this course is to introduce students to practice and research in OBM and provide students with the skills needed to apply the fundamental principles of ABA to a variety of performance problems in organizational settings.

Introduces students to a behavior analytic approach to language and to the interaction between speakers and listeners. The course will cover types of elementary verbal behavior. Students will learn to recognize examples of these concepts as they occur in everyday life. Research articles that report on teaching verbal behavior to learners will be analyzed.

This course examines radical behaviorism in a broad historical, theoretical, and philosophical context. Works by B.F. Skinner and analyses and extensions of these works will be discussed. Radical, contextual, methodological and feminist behaviorism will be analyzed and their historical roots investigated. Readings will explore major conceptual issues such as determinism, mentalism, selection by consequences, freedom, control, and responsibility. Finally, the course will cover social issues and cultural design as applications of behavioral thinking.

Familiarizing students in the Ph.D. program with cutting edge research will better allow them to design, conceptualize, and complete their own dissertation research. The primary outcomes assessment of a student's experience and training in the Caldwell College Ph.D. in Applied Behavior Analysis Program is the formal research dissertation. The purpose of the dissertation is to enhance students’ abilities to conceptualize a research question that is socially significant and theoretically important to the further development of applied behavior analysis and apply sound research strategies in answering this question. Broadly, the dissertation requirements involve developing a comprehensive literature review paper, conceptualizing an original empirical research project, conducting the research project, writing a scholarly paper pertaining to the research study, defending the project, and having the dissertation project accepted by the student’s Dissertation Committee and the Office of Graduate Studies. The student will be provided with opportunities to complete these requirements in the three-part course sequence ABA 890 Dissertation in Applied Behavior Analysis I, ABA 891 Dissertation in Applied Behavior Analysis II, and ABA 892 Dissertation in Applied Behavior Analysis III. Across the three courses, students will form a dissertation committee, propose a research study, develop a comprehensive written report on the literature relevant to the topic, seek IRB approval for the study, collect data for their study, and write the results of the study in a formal research paper. This course is designed to examine play assessments and interventions for children with autism. Play skills are often a target for treatment for these individuals because a deficit in this area is one of the diagnostic criteria for autism. Play skills allow children with autism to engage in appropriate independent behavior and have meaningful interactions with other children. Behavior analysts who serve children with autism must be prepared to assess and develop effective interventions for teaching play skills. Students in this course will learn about definitions of play, the concept of automatic reinforcement, the development of play in typically developing children, as well as methods of assessing and teaching play skills. This course is designed to examine the assessment and treatment of stereotypic behavior, which is commonly observed in individuals with autism and their developmental disorders. Stereotypy is often a target for treatment for these individuals because of its stigma and inverse relationship with appropriate behavior (e.g., play, conversation). Behavior analysts who serve individuals with disabilities must be prepared to conduct careful analyses and treatment evaluations for stereotypical behavior. Some of those hours may be spent collecting and analyzing the data, conducting literature searches, and writing a manuscript based on the data. In depth analysis of both federal and state law cases will be examined. Issues such as the IDEIA, ADA, NCLB, and Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act, as well as state issues/regulations governing special education will be analyzed. Students will understand the concept of learning disabilities and the observable characteristics of those who are learning disabled ranging from severe to mild disabilities. Research, attitudes and current practice as they relate to children with individualized differences and special needs will be discussed and evaluated. This course has a 12-hour field component.

Practicalcommunication circumstances will be used whenever possible. The student will be shown howto communicate in a manner that will be most likely to gain support for initiatives and programs.Grant writing and the characteristics of a successfully framed proposal will be included. Status During Dissertation
Doctoral degree students who have completed all course requirements except for their dissertation may register in ABA 890 Dissertation in ABA I for three credits. Upon successful completion of ABA 890 Dissertation in ABA I, students will register for ABA 891 Dissertation in ABA II. Upon successful completion of ABA 891 Dissertation in ABA II, students will register for ABA 892 Dissertation in ABA III. Students who must continue beyond three semesters to complete their dissertation may register in ABA 896 Dissertation Continuation, which is a pass/fail non-academic bearing course that carries 3 billable credit hours. Students must seek permission from the department to continue registration for Dissertation Continuation beyond two semesters. Registration in any dissertation course will grant the student full-time status.
Transfer of Graduate Credit
For applicants who have earned their MA in ABA at Caldwell University, all credits will be accepted for transfer to the Ph.D. in ABA. For other applicants, Caldwell University will accept the transfer up to a maximum of 30 credits of graduate work in behavior analysis or a closely related field, provided that the courses taken are equivalent in content to those offered in the Caldwell University Ph.D. in ABA programs, the credits were completed within five years of the applicant’s admission to Caldwell University, and the grade earned in the courses submitted for transfer credit is a “B” or better. Official transcripts of previous graduate work as well as the catalog description and course syllabus of each course must be submitted for review at the time of application. Approval of transfer credit is based on course content and grade earned in the course which should not be lower than a B. Each credit transfer request will be reviewed by the Program Coordinator on a case-by-case basis.

PhD in Applied Behavior Analysis
The ABAI-accredited PhD program in applied behavior analysis at UNMC's Munroe-Meyer Institute (MMI) provides students with training experiences that integrate research and clinical practice. Through coursework, specialized practica and research, students develop a strong conceptual background in behavior analysis and its application within human services. Graduates are well-positioned for leadership roles in academic, clinical and research arenas.
Program Information
To be eligible to apply for the program, students must have completed a master’s degree and qualify to be credentialed as a board-certified behavior analyst (BCBA).
The three-year program features:
- view research publications generated from ABA PhD program doctoral students

The typical doctorate program for applied behavior analysis is difficult to get into. This is due to the specialization of the field and the fact that there are a limited number of slots for students at each school every year. Therefore, you want to exceed expectations when providing all possible forms of information regarding your application when you submit it to the school.

Learning Outcomes of the PhD in Applied Behavior Analysis at Cambridge College
In the ABA Doctoral Program at Cambridge College, students will:
- Analyze published research across a range of behavior analytic content, including evaluating the experimental methods used and interpreting the results
- Formulate systematic research studies using valid experimental designs to enable them to qualify for full membership in the ABAI and to present findings at regional and national ABA conferences
- Develop experimental methods to address the research question in their applied dissertations
- Evaluate published research addressing skill development and behavior reduction procedures for individuals with autism spectrum disorders (ASD) and synthesize that research to create a taxonomy of empirically supported treatment procedures.
- Create assessment procedures for evaluating treatments, conduct assessments, analyze the outcomes of those assessments, and synthesize the results of assessments to develop function-based treatment plans and instructional programs
- Propose and adapt empirically supported staff training models and systems
- Design and conduct trainings in advanced ABA content across a range of audiences (students, parents, stakeholders, etc.)
This course presents the scope and sequence of the doctoral program and orients students to program expectations and focus.
This course will feature a review of quantitative skills and methods required to produce scientific research. Single-subject design formats often used in behavior analytic research will be reviewed in detail. Single-subject designs will be compared and contrasted with group designs and issues of generality will be explored. Areas of study will include variables, reliability and validity, arranging experimental comparisons, interpreting experiments, analyzing behavioral data, and behavioral variability. The goals of the course are to provide students with the analytic tools necessary to become effective, critical consumers of research, as well as to produce their own research and supervise the research of other practitioners.
This course will review a wide range of seminal literature on the application of principles of behavior. Students will demonstrate competency in describing concepts and principles of behavior analysis using technical terminology. Students will develop teaching programs using these principles and concepts, and present instruction in a variety of contexts and to a range of audiences. The ability to translate principles into practice and to disseminate the principles effectively will be core expectations of this course.
Early Intensive Behavioral Intervention (EIBI) has been demonstrated to be the most efficacious treatment for young children with autism. The depth and breadth of the current EIBI literature is reviewed and analyzed. Variables that influence effectiveness of treatment will be reviewed including age, duration, intensity, and supervision of treatment. Methodological issues (e.g., outcome measures, experimental designs, etc.) will be assessed. Limitations to the existing research and areas for future research are also considered. Studies that examine non-behavioral and eclectic models will also be contrasted with behavioral approaches.
Students will read and evaluate and critique key published studies that use a wide range of single-subject and group experimental designs. The focus will be on ensuring that students are fluent with seminal studies and their relation to current effective treatments and gaps in existing literature. As will most courses in this program, a direct relation between this research and the key topics of EIBI and severe challenging behavior will be made.
In this course, students will learn about many of the advanced behavioral change systems and procedures that have been successfully used to treat severe and challenging problem behaviors. Assessment procedures will be reviewed with an emphasis on the use of assessment data to develop instructional procedures and strategies for reducing problematic behavior. There will be an emphasis on the application of procedures in complex environments (e.g., home, public schools, specialized schools, etc.) for individuals exhibiting severe problem behaviors.
This course discusses ethics from two varying perspectives. First, the ethical challenges associated with Early Intensive Behavioral Intervention and the prevalence of non-empirically validated treatment interventions for individuals with ASD. Secondly, from the perspective of treating individuals with severe behavioral challenges, the use of aversives, physical, mechanical and chemical restraints will be discussed and debated.
This course will focus on the experimental analysis of behavior with particular emphasis on the study of human behavior. Students will demonstrate a thorough understanding of basic principles of behavior (reinforcement, schedules of reinforcement, punishment, extinction, classical conditioning,) and how these principles were derived from basic research.
Over 3 semesters, students will select a dissertation topic, conduct a literature review, submit a research prospectus, and submit a dissertation proposal.
The Application of Behavior Analysis Across the Life Span (3 credits): This course is designed to have candidates investigate and evaluate the breadth of application of ABA across the life span of the two target areas (Severe behavior disorders and EIBI). Underserved populations and challenges unique to each stage of human development will be discussed in the context of the literature in these areas, as well as the key gaps in the existing literature.
This course will focus on the application of OBM principles as they relate to leading and managing a medium to large human service agency. Students will participate in projects related to the development implementation and ongoing monitoring of Operations and Clinical systems in actual human service agencies.
Students will do an in-depth review, evaluation and critique of basic experimental (animal) research that relates to the two core areas of EIBI and severe challenging behavior. The ability to relate experimental research to the applied research and identify discrepancies, gaps and conceptual lineage of the studies underlying principles will be a key evaluation component for this course.
This course is designed to have candidates investigate and evaluate the breadth of application of ABA across the life span of the two target areas (Severe behavior disorders and EIBI). Underserved populations and challenges unique to each stage of human development will be discussed in the context of the literature in these areas, as well as the key gaps in the existing literature.
This course requires students to conduct an in-depth review of the theoretical basis of traditional theories of typical and atypical child development and from a behavior analytic perspective. Students will compare and contrast the behavior analytic perspective to traditional psychological and psychodynamic models of language, psycho-social skill development. Early language development models are analyzed and critiqued, using the above perspectives and in relation to typical the achievement of developmental milestones. Behavior analytic topics that will be studied in depth will include; 1) understanding the development of stimulus control and basic learning behavior in early development, 2) the establishment of functional, language and communication skills and 3) behavioral research on teaching complex social behavior.
Students will conduct applied research and write their dissertations under the supervision of their dissertation committee. (This 3-credit course is taken in the seventh term of the program.)

This world-renowned program was developed in response to the increasing demand for scientists and practitioners of evidence-based methods for the education and treatment of individuals with autism and related disabilities. The PhD program in Behavior Analysis at Western New England University will give you the skills to fill this void and become a leading voice in the field. Through a combination of coursework and supervised practical and research experiences, the aim of the Department of Psychology is to train researchers and scientist-practitioners in the discovery, translation, and application of knowledge toward solving human behavior problems of societal importance. Our graduates have gone on to contribute critical research to the field and work in a variety of clinical and academic settings.

What Will You Study?
Students are expected to complete 54 credit hours with at least 27 of those hours being seminars (the remaining 27 may be dissertation credit, behavior analysis practica, and additional elective seminars). Courses will be offered in three of the four 11-week terms scheduled by the Western New England University Graduate Program (Fall, Winter, and Spring terms).
Students are expected to enroll in 7 total credits in three of the four terms in each of the initial two years of the program. Students are expected to enroll in a total of 4 credits in three of the four terms in the third year of the program. Students not finished with the program by the end of the third year register for 1 credit of dissertation continuance in all subsequent years until completion of all degree requirements.

Candidates interested in this program need to have earned a master’s degree in behavior analysis or related discipline or be certified as a master’s-level behavior analyst by the Behavior Analysis Certification Board. Candidates must also have earned a minimum of a 3.6 grade point average (GPA) in their master’s degree program.

How are courses offered?
Knowledge and skills are developed through an intensive, 3-year, full time curriculum of (a) formal course work encompassing conceptual, historical, translational, basic, and applied domains of behavior analysis, research and scholarship, professional communication, legal and ethical issues, and teaching; (b) supervised practicum experiences integrating research, college teaching/advising, and professional practice; (c) a requirement to write, present, and defend a publication-quality, extensive, integrated, and critical review of basic, applied, or conceptual literature relevant to behavior analysis; and (d) a requirement to propose, conduct, write, present, and defend an empirical dissertation whose questions and methods are based on a behavior-analytic approach. All students must be engaged in behavior analytic activities at least 20 hours per week in addition to their formal coursework.
How long will the program take?
The program may be completed in three years and must be completed within seven years.

Ph.D. in Psychology – Behavior Analysis
The PhD program in Behavior Analysis is accredited by the ABAI Accreditation Board through 2025.
Mission: The mission of the PhD program area in Behavior Analysis at West Virginia University is to produce an individual who can function effectively in various academic or applied settings, advance our understanding of the principles of behavior, and apply those principles to socially significant problems.
Training Model: The behavior analysis program area trains students in basic research, theory, and applications of behavior principles. Through research, course work, and practica, students develop skills in the experimental and applied analysis of behavior, including a strong conceptual background and methods appropriate for developing behavioral technologies. The basic, conceptual, and applied areas are integrated in the curriculum; however, a student may emphasize either basic or applied research.

Degree Requirements & Learning Outcomes are here and here . Note that students who enter the program with a bachelor’s degree must complete a master’s degree and a master’s thesis en route to the doctoral degree. They have two options: an MS in Psychology or an MS in Behavior Analysis. Information about these options are here and here . The MS requirement normally is waived for students who enter the PhD program with a master’s degree, if their thesis is judged to be equivalent to WVU theses by the Behavior Analysis faculty.
We have been able to provide funding for each student in good standing in our program. Doctoral students gain teaching experience, including opportunities for senior students to design and teach their own courses. Teaching serves as one source of funding for students. Students may also be funded through practicum placements in which they conduct clinical work to support children in the local community. Graduate students may also be hired as research assistants to work on grant-funded studies. In addition to a nine-month stipend, each student in good standing receives a university tuition waiver.
Program History: The Behavior Analysis program area at West Virginia University was created in 1976. Don Hake was recruited to WVU to be the program area coordinator, a position that he held until his untimely death in 1982.
The founding faculty members of the Behavior Analysis program were Don Hake, Andy Lattal, Kent Parker, and Jim Shafer. Andy Lattal served as area coordinator from 1982-2012. Mike Perone served as area coordinator from 2012-2013 and is the current coordinator. Claire St. Peter served as coordinator from 2013-2023. Of the present faculty, Andy Lattal arrived in 1972, Mike Perone in 1984, Karen Anderson in 2003, Claire St. Peter in 2006, Kathryn Kestner in 2015, Brennan Armshaw in 2022, and Ray Joslyn in 2023. Since its inception, the program area has awarded nearly a hundred doctoral degrees to students who have come from all parts of the United States and from many other countries.
The Department of Psychology is a recipient of the Society for the Advancement of Behavior Analysis Award for Enduring Programmatic Contributions to Behavior Analysis. This award is given to an agency, department or facility of an organization that contributes to the ongoing and enduring development of behavior analysis.
Over the years, our faculty members have been recognized through major teaching and research awards given by both the university and by professional societies. Faculty also further behavior-analytic science by serving on as editors and associate editors of major behavior-analytic journals and receiving and managing extramural research grants.

Applied Behavior Analysis Overview
Portland State University’s ABA program is fully online and provides a Verified Course Sequence (VCS) aligned with the 5th Edition Task List as a graduate certificate option; or in conjunction with a master’s degree as part of the Pathway 2 eligibility outlined by the Behavior Analyst Certification Board® (BACB®) . In addition, the program includes a number of added curricular areas of focus, including an explicit emphasis on the use of Positive Behavior Interventions and Support, and use of behavioral supports within early childhood settings.
The Association for Behavior Analysis International (ABAI) has verified PSU’s course sequence toward the coursework requirements for eligibility to take the Board Certified Behavior Analyst® examination. Applicants will need to meet additional eligibility requirements and demonstrate they reside in an authorized country before they can be deemed eligible to take the examination. About the program
The Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) Program is a fully online graduate program that provides a concentration of coursework in behavior analysis for those interested in pursuing advanced studies in ABA. Each course in the sequence builds on each other, enhancing students' knowledge and skills in implementing evidence-based behavior support strategies. Further, for those pursuing a BCBA, our 7 courses are based on the 5th edition of the BACB® Task List and an ABAI verified course sequence (VCS). We offer two program options:
- Master's Degree (Master’s in Special Education + VCS coursework - 45 credits) and
- Graduate Certificate (VCS coursework - 33 credits).
The part-time, online format allows our students the time to accrue field experience hours required to sit for the credentialing exam. Resident tuition rates apply to students who live outside of Oregon. Graduate certificate and master's degree-seeking students qualify for financial aid and College of Education scholarship opportunities. Individuals in all human and social service fields are encouraged to apply.

Applied behaviour analysis
Applied Behaviour Analysis (ABA) involves the systematic application of learning principles and techniques to assess and improve individuals’ covert and overt behaviours in order to help them function more fully in society. Training in the experimental analysis of behaviour (basic research on behaviour) is also provided.
The Department of Psychology offers research and applied training at both the MA and PhD levels in ABA. Students have the opportunity to receive supervised training in the practice of ABA with varied clientele, and especially with persons with developmental disabilities, including autism.
The program offers a verified course sequence that has been approved by the Association for Behavior Analysis International. View the Board Certified Behavior Analysts Pass-Rates . Note that pass-rate data are not published for sequences with fewer than six first-time candidates in a single year or for sequences within their first four years of operation.
Partnership with St. Amant
St. Amant is one of the largest disability service organizations in the Province of Manitoba. Located at 440 River Road (across the Red River from Duff Robin) St. Amant provides a wide range of service options that include community residences, a school, a vocational program, an integrated preschool, and community supports such as respite, crisis stabilization, and clinical services (Psychology/SLP/OT/PT). In 1997, St. Amant established a quality of life research program under the direction of Dr. C. T. Yu. Through ongoing partnership with the U of M and support from The Winnipeg Foundation, the research program is now an interdisciplinary Research Centre with a team of four researchers (including current director, Dr. Toby Martin), administrative support, and physical resources to support graduate student research. St. Amant Autism Programs is a provincially-funded service that began in 1999, and that currently provides home-based Early Intensive Behavioural Intervention for young children with autism, a school age program, and continued supports for children reaching adolescence. Many of our ABA program graduates, and current graduate students, work as clinical consultants and managers in Autism Programs. St. Amant, and the Autism Programs in particular, are strongly committed to evidence-based practice and provide a highly supportive environment for applied research.

The Doctor of Philosophy in Applied Behaviour Analysis is a structured four-year PhD full-time programme of study. It is also available part-time (six years' duration). The qualification will provide graduates with high level research skills and competencies in the applications of behavioural analysis. The programme combines a PhD thesis with the taught academic components and supervised work experience of the existing Master of Science in Applied Behaviour Analysis programme. Students are assisted to design research that will make valuable contributions to the analysis. They conduct research that further advances an integrated, scientific understanding of the complexities of human behaviour. Students are encouraged and assisted to present their research at conferences and publish their research findings in peer-reviewed international journals.

Applications are invited from candidates who hold an upper Second Class Honours (Grade 1) standard or higher in their primary degree (or equivalent) . Evidence of motivation and proposed research will be taken into account in offering places on the programme.

A Progressive Approach to Applied Behavior Analysis (Enhanced Edition)

Approximately 1 in 54 children in the U.S. will be diagnosed with an autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and that number is expected to rise, according to the CDC. Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) is one of the most common interventions for those with ASD. One of the biggest problems facing the field of ABA-based interventions is ineffectiveness of intervention approaches due to the rigid application of ABA-based interventions. A Progressive Approach to Applied Behavior Analysis provides practicing behavior analysts (e.g., BCBA, BCaBA, RBTs) and other clinicians with an in-depth introduction to a Progressive Approach to ABA and how it applies to common teaching methods within ABA-based interventions. This includes research and guidelines for implementing a Progressive Approach to ABA potentially increasing the likelihood of meaningful outcomes for the individuals with ASD. VirginiaABA Presents: Motivational Interviewing Can Improve Compassionate Care: A group design

Description: In the field of applied behavior analysis (ABA), there is a recognized need for Board Certified Behavior Analysts (BCBAs) to demonstrate improved empathy and communication skills when interacting with caregivers. In other helping professions, motivational interviewing (MI) is frequently used to enhance these therapeutic skills and improve clinical outcomes, yet this approach has not been evaluated in the field of applied behavior analysis. In this randomized control trial study, 51 behavior analysts were randomly assigned to either waitlist control or to receive the Brief Motivational Interviewing (BMI) training, which focused on situations that BCBAs often encounter when interacting with caregivers. Findings demonstrate that the brief virtual MI training results in statistically significant improvements in core MI skills including an increase in the use of open-ended questions, affirmations and reflections as well as improvements on a measure of MI knowledge. Measures of social validity confirm the feasibility, acceptability and usefulness of MI training for BCBAs and should be used to inform future modifications to graduate, practicum and ongoing continuing education. Future studies should focus on additional training modalities, teaching complex MI skills, ongoing maintenance of skills taught and demonstration of skills by BCBAs in-vivo with parents. Overall, the curriculum fills the recent call for improvement from both parents and clinicians to address BCBA skill deficits with an approach that results in stronger therapeutic relationship-building skills.

- Objective 1: Participants will be able to describe the four core skills associated with motivational interviewing as well as times during parent interaction in which they would be useful.
- Objective 2: Participants will be able to identify two tools that can be utilized during supervision of students and early career BCBAs to assess skills related to compassionate care. Objective 3: Participants will be able to identify at least three ways in which behavior analysis can continue to explore the use of motivational interviewing in practice and how it can be integrated into graduate and practicum training curriculum.
