Admission to a research degree in the University of Sydney Business School is very competitive. You need to have completed an Australian honours (or equivalent) or a postgraduate degree with outstanding results (at least 80%) in order to be considered for an offer.

Admission to a research degree in the University of Sydney Business School is very competitive. You need to have completed an Australian honours (or equivalent) or a postgraduate degree with outstanding results (at least 80%) in order to be considered for an offer. Admission to the PhD program also requires prior completion of a 20,000 word honours or Masters thesis.

Bachelor (Honours)

Admission to the Bachelor of Economics (Honours) requires:

  • completion of a Bachelor of Economics from the University of Sydney with a minimum weighted average mark of 70, or equivalent qualification;
  • Economics subject area : a minimum average mark of 70 in advanced units of study in microeconomic theory; macroeconomic theory; mathematical economics; and econometrics. Econometrics subject area : intermediate-level training in microeconomics and macroeconomics and a minimum average mark of 75 in advanced units of study in econometrics; and
  • evidence of support from the School of Economics Honours Coordinator, such as email correspondence.

NOTE: This degree requires completion of a major cognate to the Honours area you want to apply for. If you are on track to complete a double major and have not yet completed your penultimate semester of study, you have the option to undertake an embedded Honours component through a combined Bachelor of Advanced Studies degree after transferring to the degree.

Doctor of Philosophy (Engineering)

Bachelor of nursing (honours), graduate diploma in medicine (psychiatry).

Graduate Diploma

Admission requirements include:

  • a medical degree
  • current employment in a RANZCP-accredited training position in psychiatry or equivalent position, or have previously done psychiatry training in Australia or overseas
  • current medical registration in Australia

International students currently working in Australia or New Zealand in an appropriate role and on an appropriate working visa, may apply for admission.

The academic requirements that are displayed are applicable to currently available courses only, and are updated annually and may be changed without notice.

Doctor of Philosophy (Medicine and Health)

To apply for a PhD, you need to demonstrate sufficient prior research experience and capability. In most cases, you will have either:

  • a bachelor's degree with first or upper second class honours or
  • a master's degree performed at a high academic standard, and which includes a substantial component of research
  • an equivalent qualification that demonstrates research experience, excellence and capability.

These are the minimum requirements for eligibility but they do not guarantee admission. That remains at the discretion of the Associate Dean (Research Education) for the faculty.

Transfer from University of Sydney Master of Philosophy

Outstanding candidates who successfully complete one year full-time or equivalent part-time of the University of Sydney Master of Philosophy degree may apply for transfer into the Doctor of Philosophy and be granted credit for work already completed pending:

  • approval from the supervisor and school
  • meeting all higher degree by research progression requirements
  • providing evidence that their research is of a sufficient scope and depth to sustain a doctoral thesis.

Bachelor of Advanced Studies (Media and Communications) (Honours)

Graduate certificate in computing, master of medicine (psychiatry).

Psychiatrists are also eligible to apply.

Master of Criminology (Research)

Masters (Research)

A successful applicant for admission to the Master of Criminology by research requires an Honours degree with first or second class honours. Applications for admission to candidature for the Master of Criminology are assessed on the basis of: suitability and sufficiency of merit of the applicant's prior qualification (Bachelor's degree or equivalent); suitability of proposed topic; and availability of appropriate supervision.

Doctor of Philosophy

Postgraduate students studying to be a Juris Doctor

As a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) candidate, you’ll complete a substantial program of independent and original research in your chosen field of study. A PhD prepares you for a range of careers - from academic to industry and is the highest degree qualification available. 

  • 3–4 years (full time) minimum commitment of 35 – 40 hours per week or
  • 6–8 years (part time) minimum commitment of 15 hours per week.
  • Offered in all Faculties
  • A thesis of no more than 100,000 words.

The minimum requirement for admission to a PhD is:

  • A UNSW Bachelor degree with first or upper second class Honours from UNSW; or
  • a completed Master by Research from UNSW with a substantial research component and demonstrated capacity for timely completion of a high quality research thesis; or
  • an equivalent qualification from a tertiary institution as determined by the Faculty Higher Degree Committee (HDC)

The minimum requirement for UNSW Scholarship with admission to a PhD is:

  • a four year Bachelor degree with first or upper second class Honours from an Australian institution or equivalent research qualification as above.
