How to win scholarships for graduate students

As someone who has already gone through the process of earning your undergraduate degree, you probably have some experience with applying for scholarships. However, students applying for graduate scholarships would do well to emphasize a few different points to help ensure successful applications.

Graduate students typically have a more specific idea of their future career goals than undergraduate students. Students will generally pay for graduate school using a few different funding sources. The most common sources are private scholarships, need-based financial aid and grants, and university-specific scholarships.

Private graduate school scholarships

There some great private organizations that offer scholarships for students pursuing their masters or doctoral degrees! These scholarships support graduate students of all stripes including medical school students, law school students, business school students, masters students, and doctoral students!

Need-based financial aid for grad school

Need-based financial aid is another important way to pay for graduate school. For graduate school, need-based aid can include both grants (that don’t need to be repaid) and student loans (that do need to be repaid).

For need-based graduate school financial aid, students must submit the Free Application for Federal Student Aid or FAFSA . This allows students to be considered for both need-based grants and federal student loans. Some colleges may also require additional forms, so always check with your specific graduate program for more details about their financial aid process.

Many colleges may also require students to submit the CSS Profile , which is a financial aid application that is hosted by the College Board. The CSS Profile is how students can access institutional financial aid from the universities.

University-specific merit scholarships

The National Center for Education Statistics released its latest data on the average costs of graduate tuition and required fees for 2014. Some of the overall yearly costs are detailed below. Why don’t students apply for these free funds?

With many working part- or full-time while taking the GRE, completing applications and beginning programs, finding time to apply for scholarships may seem impossible. Thankfully, once prospective students have done the groundwork for one application, more follow quickly.

With a multitude of federal departments, higher education institutions and private institutions offering myriad scholarships, sometimes wires can get crossed. The following section outlines some of the most common truths and misconceptions about scholarships and sets the record straight once and for all.

It’s true: there are a lot of scholarships available specifically to minority students and other special populations, but there are plenty of other scholarships open to all students. A 2011 report by FinAid found white students still receive over 75 percent of all merit-based scholarships and are 40 percent more likely than minority students to be awarded a private scholarship.

While this may be true for scholarships that don’t require many supporting documents, rigorous applications seeking essays, recommendations and a thoughtful personal statement often weed out many students looking for quick funds. It may take longer, but these scholarships almost always have fewer applicants.

Academic scholarships look for top grades, but many scholarships are focused on other factors such as extracurricular activities, volunteerism or intended major. As of 2011, only 10 percent of scholarships from private foundations were solely awarded on academic performance.

It’s wise not to put all your eggs in one basket. Even for students with a stellar academic history and an unending list of achievements, being awarded a scholarship is never a given. The latest statistics provided by the National Postsecondary Student Aid Study found 3.7 percent of graduate students received private fellowship funds, averaging under $5,800.

Scholarship and grant funds can dramatically reduce the overall cost of higher education, but you’ll likely still have to pay a certain amount out of pocket or take out a small loan. According to U.S. News & World Report , only .3 percent of all students are able to cover all costs with only scholarships or grants.

Out of all prospective scholarship sources, nearly 73 percent of funds are provided directly by the institution. As of 2013, this amount averaged $5,645 annually. Most colleges automatically consider prospective students for these scholarships once accepted, but it’s worth it to speak with the school’s financial aid counselor to ensure there are no additional applications.

There’s a misconception that only economically disadvantaged students receive scholarships. While there are a number of scholarships aimed specifically at this population, students from varied economic levels qualify for this type of funding. California’s Student Aid Commission has a scholarship program specifically for students from middle-class families, while a recent report found students hailing from the top 25 percent also received more than one-quarter of all merit-based scholarships.

For a student to qualify for scholarships for graduate students, only postgraduate students enrolled in grad school can apply. Grad school scholarships are a type of financial aid or federal student aid that helps students achieve a graduate degree through grad school.

Types of Graduate School Scholarships Available

Scholarships for graduate students interested in attending grad school and working toward a graduate degree come in wide varieties. There are different graduate programs for grad students besides grad school, such as scholarship opportunities, a scholarship program, doctoral programs, advanced degree programs, a graduate level program, fellowships, and grants.

Fellowships and Grants 

Fellowships and grants are two types of awarded financial aid usually only available to graduate students, but grants can also be given to funding student research. 

Grants are financial awards based on the estimated need of the student. These can be federal, state, or even privately funded awards. Fellowships are monetary awards based on the future potential of the student. These are given to support research and career opportunities. 

Academic merit-based

These scholarships are based solely on your proven academic ability. These can be decided on the applicant’s grade-point average (GPA), standardized test scores (MCAT, LSAT, etc.), or other academic scores.

Colleges may have academic merit-based scholarships for students who are part of their incoming class, so they’ll receive these scores when you apply. But, other organizations have academic scholarships, so you will have to submit these scores too. 

If you accept recurring award money from an academic scholarship from a college, you are enrolled in or intend to enroll in. You may have to meet a minimum GPA requirement each year to keep getting the money each year or semester. 

Athletic scholarships are based on a student’s athletic ability, usually within a given sport. Often, coaches from interested schools will scout out students performing well during their sport’s season and decide whether or not to make an offer.  

These tend to be pretty rare once you start looking at scholarships open to graduate students. The NCAA does have a postgraduate scholarship program. They are still worth looking into.   

Identity-based

Scholarships with the qualification partially based on the applicant’s identity are open only to people within those groups. These scholarships exist from trying to help students from disadvantaged backgrounds and marginalized communities by giving awards to students who share the same characteristics as someone who has passed in their honor. 

Department or Concentration-based

These scholarships are financial awards only available to students a specific department has accepted in their graduate school. These scholarships can be as broad as any STEM department or transparent and only open to those studying in neurology departments. 

How to Find Graduate School Scholarships to Apply for?

Looking for scholarships can be complex and lengthy, especially if you don’t know where to look. But, many resources are available to help students look for scholarships. 

The internet is the best place to start if you need help looking for scholarships. Many websites are dedicated to collecting and showcasing scholarships to students in need. These websites are helpful because you can filter out scholarships you know you won’t qualify for. You can also bookmark scholarships you don’t qualify for now but maybe suitable applicants in coming semesters. 

Your advisor, another department, or degree program students are great resources for finding scholarships. These people are likely familiar with scholarships that your school sponsors or may not be super popular, making your chances of winning better. Consulting with your advisor is always a good idea as their job is to help you succeed. If they can’t help you with applications or places to look for scholarships, they can refer you to another administrator or school resource for help. 

Another good place to look for scholarships is local businesses or organizations to see if they sponsor scholarships for college students. This is an excellent idea if you live in a city where the college has a significant presence, even off-campus. 

Tips for Winning graduate school Scholarships

So now you know where to look for scholarships, but how do you make sure you get chosen? Well, there is no way to guarantee that you’ll win all the scholarships you apply for, but you can increase your chances. 

For scholarships that require an essay, make sure that your essay answers all parts of the prompt. Look for any ramblings or extra information that doesn’t pertain to the subject of the fast. Also, make sure that your writing is clear and engaging. Having an essay that is boring and hard to read is an easy way to lose the sponsor’s attention when they try to read your response. 

If you are writing about the research you’ve done, highlighting the exciting parts of your results or further applications of your findings could be helpful. 

Another way to increase your chances of winning is to go for scholarships with smaller award amounts. Many students go for the significant ticket dollar amounts to ” win big ” and get the most money possible. But, many students will apply for these same scholarships for this reason. Making the pool of students you’re competing against more minors gives you a better chance of winning. 

The more you keep winning, many of these smaller award amounts will build up to a more significant amount, so don’t be afraid to go after smaller fish.

Another way to decrease the number of students you are competing with is to apply for scholarships only open to a particular type of applicant. Think about how many students can apply to a scholarship available to any undergraduate art student versus a scholarship only open to undergraduate art students who make realistic, digital art.

Generally, no, grad school scholarships are not considered taxable income. If it is found out that you have used scholarship funds for expenses unrelated to your degree or college expenses, then these funds may be considered taxable income. Marshall Scholarships

Scholarships by country

Education roundup: Scholarships to study abroad in 2024-25, new rules for post-graduate work permit in Canada & more updates

1. British Council's  GREAT Scholarships 2024  for Indian students enrolling in postgraduate studies in the UK start from autumn 2024. Each GREAT Scholarship unboxes support worth £10,000 or more, paid towards tuition fees for a one-year postgraduate course in the UK for the 2024-25 academic year. The scholarship is offered in partnership with the UK government’s GREAT Britain campaign. This year, 25 UK universities are offering 26 postgraduate GREAT scholarships to Indian students as part of the programme, across subjects from finance and marketing to psychology Design and dance. Additionally, for the 2024-25 academic year, there are four Science and Technology scholarships available across four UK universities. Indian students can for science and technology-related subjects such as artificial intelligence, sustainable engineering, and psychology, among others, at any of the participating higher education institutions.

2. Inlaks Shivdasani Scholarship offers eligible Indian students funding of $1 lakh (approximately Rs 82.97 lakh) to cover educational expenses, living costs, medical expenses, and a one-way flight ticket. Check the Foundation's website for age eligibility and other qualification criteria, and application dates for 2025. In 2024, the scholarship application period was open from February 6 to March 22. So far, the Foundation has supported around 500 scholars for overseas studies, and close to 1,000 students have benefited from awards and grants both in India and internationally.

3. Pearson's PTE Core English proficiency test for Canadian economic migration visa received approval from Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) last year. First conducted on February 12, 2024, the 2-hour, computer-based exam tests four key English language skills: speaking, listening, reading, and writing. PTE Core is relevant for the vocational test takers, and the questions have a real-life, non-academic focus. Check Pearson's website to book an exam slot.

4.  Duolingo English Test (DET) is accepted in 5,000 universities, for admissions to undergraduate and post-graduate programs across the USA, UK, Canada, Australia, Ireland, etc. The list of colleges that accept this English language proficiency test includes Imperial College London and the London School of Economics and Political Science in the UK and Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Berklee School of Music in the US.

5.  Canada has updated norms for international students to qualify for Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP) : The new Canadian Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP) & Open Spousal Work Permit Eligibility rules will come into effect from September 1, 2024. Under the new rules, international students enrolled in a program that is part of a curriculum licensing arrangement will no longer qualify for a Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP) upon graduation. Under curriculum licensing agreements, students physically attend a private college that has been licensed to deliver the curriculum of an associated public college. According to Immigration Refugees Citizenship Canada (IRCC), these programs have less oversight than public colleges.

Additionally, graduates of master’s degree programs will be eligible to apply for only three-year PGWP, irrespective of the length of an individual’s program of study.

6. Australia’s student visa approval rate hit a record low : Australian universities are reporting historically high volume of applications from international students in 2024. But the numbers of students going to Australia is expected to drop due to low visa approval rates for students. Student visa application approval rate stood at over 90 percent for 15 years prior to 2023. In the six months to December 2023, though, the approval rate fell to 82 percent overall, and to 70 percent for vocational education, according to new government data. The government is trying to reduce the number of migrants now. The country’s borders were opened in November 2021, post-Covid - it is now clamping down on entry by ‘non-genuine’ students.

7. University of Glasgow's £5,000 fee discount for Indian postgraduate students : University of Glasgow launched India Merit Award that covers programs in more than 150 subject areas across science and humanities earlier this year. Highly qualified students can get a £5,000 discount on their fee. The university is ranked 76th in the QS World University Rankings 2024. To qualify, students will have to demonstrate academic excellence equivalent to a UK first class honours in their degree.

8. University of Birmingham entered a partnership with Symbiosis International University to make it easier for Indian students to study for a postgraduate law qualification in the UK . SIU undergraduate law students can also apply for an exchange programme, to study in Birmingham for a period. The students will also be awarded special scholarships as part of the partnership, as well as enabling students to progress in their legal qualifications. The agreement covers SIU students who have successfully completed BA LLB or BBA LLB or second year of the three-year course and the fourth year of the five-year law programme.

9. A university course in AI, with the admissions process led by a robot in the metaverse ? Admissions to Universal Ai University are done through the university's own metaverse called Eventuality. Here, a Droid gives candidates a virtual campus tour, oversees virtual interviews, and generates and reads out the results. The digitally led admissions process combines optimisation algorithms, crowd-generating tools, and visual-enhancing technologies. The hope is that the model could eventually transform traditional admissions.

10.  Who is a digital nomad? Immigration Refugees Citizenship Canada (IRCC) this year provided clarification on the definition of digital nomad as a person who can perform his/her job remotely from anywhere in the world.

A digital nomad only needs visitor status to relocate to Canada for up to six months at a time. According to Canadian immigration, there should be no connection between his/her/their work and Canada – that is, the person should not be serving or working with Canadian clients nor a local office in Canada – to qualify as a digital nomad.

11. Samsung R&D Institute Bengaluru (SRI-B) has inaugurated the Samsung Innovation Campus programme at the KLE Institute of Technology (KLEIT), Hubli , with the aim to upskill youth in future technology domains. Engineers at Samsung R&D Institute, Bengaluru, will work on collaborative research projects with KLEIT students and faculty. Through this initiative, SRI-B plans to upskill approximately 100 students and professors per year at KLEIT. SRI-B is already working with four engineering colleges across Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh, engaging more than 500 students on courses of Artificial Intelligence, Coding & Programming, IoT, and Big Data. Samsung has so far set up eight Samsung Innovation Labs in IIT-Delhi, IIT-Kanpur, IIT-Hyderabad, IIT-Kharagpur, IIT-Roorkee and IIT-Guwahati, IIITDM-Kurnool and IIT-Jodhpur as part of its Samsung Innovation Campus programme. So far, these labs have trained over 1,000 students.

12. The University of Birmingham has partnered with the Government of Maharashtra to set up a specialist Research and Innovation Hub. The aim is to tackle challenges in key state priority areas including agriculture and healthcare, using Artificial Intelligence (AI). Working with strategy partner Ernst&Young, the agreement brings together three state public universities: Kavayitri Bahinabai Chaudhari North Maharashtra University, Jalgaon; COEP Technological University, Pune; and Savitribai Phule Pune University, Pune, in the initial phase of the project. As part of this initiative, the Department of Higher and Technical Education has also constituted a Maharashtra Responsible Research and Innovation Taskforce (MSRRIT)

Pearson has partnered with University Living (UL), an online global student accommodation marketplace, to facilitate foreign accommodation, financial services, and logistics support for study-abroad aspirants in India . Through this partnership, Pearson and University Living will organise webinars, seminars, and campus visits for students. Pearson PTE test takers from India can also get some discounts, benefits, and assistance for global mobility like destination-specific promotions on accommodation and education packages for key markets like Canada, the UK, Australia, and New Zealand.

14. Amid reports of a record decline in student visa approval rates for international students, Australian universities are asking some international students to withdraw their admission offers . Australia rejected 21 percent of the visa applications from international students in the second half of last year; 39 percent applications from Indian students were rejected. An email published in the Koala International Education News shows Wollongong University informing a student that they were ‘unlikely to meet the new criteria to obtain a positive visa outcome’, offering them two options: either withdraw their offer and receive a refund or defer their offer. As per the new regulations, students can only work up to 48 hours a fortnight. In addition, students will no longer be allowed to switch their enrolment from a high-cost to a low-cost college within the first six months of arriving in Australia.

15. 10 years of University of Chicago's Center in Delhi: Established in 2014 as a hub for teaching, research, and dialogue, the University of Chicago Center in Delhi has completed 10 years. The Center works towards fostering intellectual collaboration between UChicago and Indian institutions on diverse topics, from telecommunications systems to poetry. The 10th-anniversary celebrations began on February 16, and will end in September with a gala.

Switzerland has topped the list of the best education destinations for young HNWs, according to Henley & Partners: Switzerland has topped Henley & Partners’ new global ‘Opportunity Index’, which ranks the best destinations for High Net Worth (HNW) in terms of accessing the best education in the world – and the ease at which HNW individuals can move there and gain citizenship. An education in Switzerland, the US or Singapore — and relocating for the long term — could bring an ‘opportunity advantage’ to young HNWs, according to Henley & Partners new global ‘Opportunity Index’.

International staff and students feel unwelcome in the Netherlands – Survey: Most international students and staff in Dutch universities feel less welcome today than they did when they first arrived in the country, according to a survey conducted by six independent university newspapers and magazines – University Newspaper Groningen (UKrant), DUB Utrecht, VOX-Nijmegen (Radboud University), TU Delta at Delft University, Resource Wageningen and U-Today at the University of Twente. Conducted in November 2023, the survey included 1,330 international students and employees. According to the survey, 70 percent of students and staff members who responded had felt welcome or even very welcome when they first came to The Netherlands. That number has now dropped to 55 percent. About 50 percent of students and staff members said Dutch politics is increasingly negative about internationals.

18. Prime minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the Rs 500-crore 200-acre Indian Institute of Management (IIM) Jammu campus on February 20, 2024. The government of India had established IIM Jammu in Jammu and Kashmir in 2016 and its off-campus at Srinagar was inaugurated on January 24, 2020. The new state-of-the-art campus in Jagti, 14 km from Jammu City, reflects the Institute's commitment to providing high-quality management education and fostering inclusivity.

Australia’s University of Canberra and Cricket ACT launched academy-style cricket coaching in India, to provide tailored teaching and coaching development sessions; training and playing tours for students. The partnership aims to bring an international perspective to cricket education in India, levelling the playing field especially for girls and women in cricket. This also opens up a ‘Study and play’ pathway for Indian students in Canberra.

20. First-year international students drive Germany’s enrolment growth. For the 2023-24 winter semester, Germany’s Federal Office of Statistics released preliminary figures that show that 402,617 individuals enrolled at a German university, which represents an increase of 1.1 percent. Most of the new students were from India (11,733), followed by China (5,661), with Indian figures on the rise during the past few years and Chinese figures gradually declining.

2. The Corinne Jeannine Schillings Foundation Scholarship to Study Abroad

If you’re a woman who’s received a Silver or Gold Award as a Girl Scout with plans to study abroad, you may be eligible for a scholarship from this foundation. Two scholarships offered by the foundation are an academic scholarship to study a foreign language and a scholarship to study abroad specifically.

3. IES Abroad Scholarships

The Institute for the International Education of Students (IES) aims to make academic and cultural opportunities available for students across the globe. It offers several scholarships to support students who want to study abroad that you can apply for using a single application. 

4. Fullbright U.S. Student Program

The Fullbright U.S. Student Program has partnered with 140 countries across the globe to aid graduating college seniors, graduate students, and young professionals to study, research, or teach English abroad. The program offers grants to cover housing and a meal stipend, international travel benefits, and health benefits, among other perks. The award value varies depending on the country in which someone completes the program. 

5. The Henry Luce Foundation Luce Scholars Program

The Luce Scholars Program is a fellowship program awarded to 18 applicants to help them learn about Asian culture. Applicants receive stipends, language training, and individualized professional placement. 

6. Gilman-McCain Scholarship

The Gilman-McCain Scholarship provides $5,000 awards for children and spousal dependents of active or activated U.S. military personnel during the time of application. The award aims to support students who want to study or intern abroad in credit-bearing programs. 

7. SIT Study Abroad Scholarships & Grants

The School for International Training (SIT) offers various study abroad programs for college undergraduates. These programs are based in Africa, Asia, Europe, Latin America, the Middle East, and other locations and involve over 400 educators worldwide.
