Program for Continuing Education

The P.E.O. Program for Continuing Education (PCE) was established in 1973 to provide need-based grants to women in the U.S. and Canada whose education has been interrupted and who find it necessary to return to school to complete a degree or certification that will improve their marketable skills for employment to support themselves and/or their families. The maximum grant amount is $4,000.

Funding Grants Today for A Brighter Tomorrow

Since 1973, we've been helping women of various ages in the U.S. and Canada with need-based grants. If your education was interrupted and you need to return to school to enhance your job skills or care for your family, we're here for you!

At the heart of every success story lies a support system that believes in your potential. With a clear focus on need-based grants, the Program for Continuing Education (PCE) stands as a beacon of hope, providing a pathway for women whose educational journeys might have been put on hold.

Life's unpredictable twists and turns can sometimes disrupt educational pursuits, but that doesn't mean those dreams have to fade away. P.E.O. understands the unique challenges that women face, and we're here to say that your aspirations matter, no matter your age or circumstances.

The Program for Continuing Education can help make dreams a reality.

Be Part of the Ripple Effect

Supporting women's education has a ripple effect, positively impacting their lives, their children's lives, and the broader community. The P.E.O. Program for Continuing Education plays a vital role in empowering women and creating a brighter tomorrow.

These grants are more than just financial assistance. They symbolize the collective belief in your potential to make a positive impact on your life, your family and your community. With PCE, you're not just receiving funding, you're gaining the tools to transform your future.

We understand that supporting a woman's education has effects that extend far beyond the classroom. When we help a woman achieve her educational goals, we're also contributing to stronger families, more vibrant communities and a more inclusive society. Education is not just an individual endeavor—it's a force for change that can uplift everyone around us.

Individual Named Grants – provide a one-time grant to a student from an individual.

Named Grant Chapters – provide a one-time grant to a student from a chapter or group of chapters. PCE Named Grants funded exclusively through chapter donations received during the local fiscal year (March 1 through February 28/29) will receive special recognition at s/p/d conventions.

*As of February 14, 2024, the amount needed to be designated as a PCE Named Grant is $4,000.

Endowed Named Grants – PCE Endowed Named Grants are generated by special funds held in the P.E.O. Foundation. The principle for each PCE designated endowed fund provides the interest for the funding of the grant.

The Online Course Experience

Members of our Teaching and Learning team, along with instructor Sergio Imparato, discuss the HES philosophy of “human-centered learning done online” — and how we foster interaction without sacrificing flexibility.

HELIX: Harvard Extension Live Interactive eXperience

To support active learning, we created a platform called the Helix classrooms and web conferences . The technology brings together students from around the globe to join an instructor in a live classroom.

Helix classrooms and web conferences are “hyflex” — a combination of hybrid and flexible formats.

  • Students may join professors live in the classroom
  • Live online students join the class through Zoom displayed on large monitors and seamlessly interact with students in the classroom
  • On-demand students watch professional recordings of the class on their own schedule and interact through online discussion tools
  • Students participate in thoughtful discussion with their peers and engage with their instructor in real time

Benefits of Online Learning

Online education is fundamentally changing the paradigm of higher education. At Harvard Extension School, we think about online learning a little differently:

  • People are at the core of every interaction—we’re connecting people for a shared learning experience
  • Our courses respect the full lives and varied preferences of adult, part-time learners
  • You receive personal, individualized feedback on your work
  • You will be part of a strong community of learners
  • Iterative course design keeps courses fresh and relevant for students and instructors
  • Everyone has the opportunity to earn credit in rigorous, Harvard-quality courses
Education is about being vulnerable. It’s about being unsettled, unnerved, unhoused – being open to that which you are not used to. To have to de-familiarize yourself to ways of being in the world – Harvard Extension is magnificent in that regard. Cornel West

Distance Education Trailblazers for Over 110 Years

Harvard Extension School believes learners should be at the helm of their own education, while instructors act as mediators who introduce ideas, ask questions, and encourage students to explore new ways of thinking on their own. Online courses present a rich opportunity for this kind of teaching and learning.

As an early adopter and national leader in distance education, we are perfectly positioned to offer an outstanding, world-class academic experience online, with no compromise on quality.

What is Continuing Education?

programs for continuing education

“Continuous learning is the minimum requirement for success in any field,” says renowned author Brian Tracy. In a world driven by relentless technological advancement and innovation, this statement rings true more than ever. Education is no longer a finite endeavor to be completed in our early years but rather an ongoing journey of growth and adaptation. This is where the concept of continuing education comes into play.

Far from being confined to traditional academic realms, continuing education extends to professional development, personal enrichment, and even nurturing long-held hobbies or interests. It also represents an opportunity for individuals to broaden their horizons, enhance their understanding of the world, and enrich their lives.

Let’s dive deep into continuing education in the following sections.

Continuing education is a broad term referring to any post-secondary learning or training program adults pursue after formal education. These programs help foster a lifelong learning mentality, where education extends beyond the conventional education years.

Continuing education ranges from non-degree career training and degree credit courses to non-credit courses. These courses can be delivered through various modes like in-person classes, online learning platforms, seminars, or workshops. They’re typically designed for non-traditional students and don’t come with a degree.

Why Continuing Education Is Critical for Everyone

As technologies and industries advance, skills that were once in demand can become outdated. The World Economic Forum forecasts that by 2027, half of all jobs will demand new skill sets. In such a dynamic landscape, continuing education equips individuals with the tools to adapt and thrive.

By embracing continuous learning , you demonstrate your commitment to adaptability and growth. You can also explore new areas of interest and gain new skills that could lead to career advancement or transition. You own your upskilling and reskilling journey, and with that mindset, you reduce the risk of becoming obsolete in your field.

Researchers from Harvard Business Review also suggest that highlighting your commitment to continuous learning on your resume after your formal education can impress potential employers. “While taking individual classes may not seem comparable to a four-year degree, showing you’re continuously learning and growing your skills is an attractive quality in an employee.”

In addition to skill acquisition, continuing education can also boost mental health. Research showed that engaging in regular learning activities can stimulate the mind and promote cognitive health agility . Many courses or programs involve group activities and interactions with fellow learners, which helps establish networks and a sense of community and belonging.

Examples of Continuing Education Courses

Degree-credit courses.

Degree-credit courses are a common form of continuing education. These are similar to the traditional courses in a college curriculum, offering credits that can count towards a degree.

Degree-credit courses are particularly beneficial for those individuals who might have paused their education midway and now wish to resume their academic journey. For example, someone who had to discontinue their bachelor’s degree due to personal circumstances can use degree-credit courses to work towards graduation.

Short Courses

Short courses are a flexible and accessible means of continuing education, typically lasting from a day to a few weeks. These courses often focus on teaching a specific skill or knowledge area, providing a quick, efficient way for individuals to improve their skill set or gain new knowledge. Topics can be wide-ranging, from leadership skills to computer programming, and are often available both in-person and online.

On-the-job Training

On-the-job training is training offered by an employer to improve an employee’s skills for their current job. It ranges from teaching new skills to providing updated training due to changes in technology or work process. This form of learning benefits not only the employees but also the employers, as it helps maintain a skilled and competent workforce.

Work-integrated Learning

Work-integrated learning is a dynamic form of continuing education that blends academic learning with practical work experience. This can include internships, cooperative education programs, or apprenticeships. These programs offer an effective way for students to apply their knowledge in a practical setting, enhance their skills, and gain valuable industry insights.

In a world where knowledge is power and the rate of change is ever-increasing, continuing education is a cornerstone for personal development and professional growth. Start embracing the opportunities that continuing education presents and invest in your future today.

7 Best Continuing Education (CE) Courses for Psychologists

Continuing education courses

To maintain a license to practice, health and social care professionals of all kinds are required to participate in continuing education .

The goal of continuing education (CE) for psychologists is to maintain and develop existing competencies, remain abreast of the latest developments in evidence-based practice, and safeguard clients and service users by ensuring practitioners offer up-to-date clinical interventions.

In addition to discussing CE credits, in this article, we will introduce you to the best online continuing education courses offered by PositivePsychology.com that are accredited by both the American Psychological Association and International Coaching Federation.

But before you continue, we thought you might like to download these three Positive Psychology Exercises for free . These science-based exercises explore fundamental aspects of positive psychology, including strengths, values, and self-compassion, and will give you the tools to enhance the wellbeing of your clients, students, or employees.

This Article Contains

What are continuing education (ce) credits, why do psychologists need apa ce credits, 6 things to look for in ce programs, 7 best continuing education courses online, a take-home message, frequently asked questions.

CE credits are awarded upon successful completion of continuing education courses that contribute to the continuing professional development (CPD) portfolio required to maintain your license.

For psychologists, CE credits need to be awarded by education providers that are approved by the professional body that maintains licensing standards, professional ethics, and other regulations in the country where the psychologist practices.

Different professional bodies regulate the licensing of psychologists worldwide. These include the following:

United States

The APA is the federal professional body for psychologists in the United States, but each state has its own licensing requirements, which can be found online at the Association of State and Provincial Psychology Boards .

All states require psychologists to partake in APA-accredited continuing education to maintain their license.

The Canadian Psychological Association ( CPA ), like the APA in the United States, is the national professional membership body, while licensure is managed by regulatory bodies in each Canadian jurisdiction.

Each regulatory body requires psychologists to update their skills and knowledge regularly by acquiring APA- or CPA-accredited CE credits.

The Psychology Board of Australia is the professional membership body for Australian psychologists and also licenses psychologists to practice in Australia. Each psychologist is required to undertake 30 hours of continuing professional development per year to maintain their license annually. This can include CE credits.

New Zealand

The New Zealand Psychological Society is the professional membership body for psychologists, and the New Zealand Psychologists Board handles the registration of psychologists under the Health Practitioners Competence Assurance Act of 2003.

Psychologists must get a practice certificate and registered membership to practice lawfully in New Zealand. CPD requirements are stated under the board’s code of ethics. Also, psychologists may be requested to undertake a competence review at any time for professional education purposes.

United Kingdom

The British Psychological Society ( BPS ) is the professional membership body for UK psychologists of all kinds, while the Health and Care Professions Council ( HCPC ) licenses UK psychologists to practice under one of nine categories protected by law.

As BPS members practice in a range of professional contexts outside these nine categories, some may be regulated by other voluntary bodies for psychotherapists , counselors, or coaches.

All psychologists on the HCPC register must maintain an up-to-date CPD profile that can be randomly audited. Failure to do so can result in removal from the register.

European Union

Full-member associations of the European Federation of Psychologists’ Associations are listed per country. Each member state has their own regulatory body with licensing requirements specific to their country. Each regulatory body has different CPD requirements.

International

Other countries will have their own professional membership associations and licensing regulations, but some countries have no licensing regulations at all for psychologists (Azar, 2009).

APA CE Credits

However, the APA has a global reach, so it’s worth checking with your licensing authority to see if APA-approved CE credits can contribute to your professional development portfolio.

Given that the United States has stringent professional standards for psychologists, APA-approved CE credits are likely to meet your continuing education objectives regardless of your country of residence.

When researching which CE program best meets your needs, look out for the following:

  • Consider the type of knowledge or skills that will help you update or develop your existing competencies or add new ones that may be required by your licensing authority. Are there any emerging hot topics in your specialty that you should know about?
  • Check that the CE provider is accredited and/or recognized by your professional body, licensing authority, and employer.
  • Check that the instructors are properly qualified and registered practitioners in your field.
  • Check if the CE provider offers flexible delivery options, such as asynchronous online learning that you can fit around your existing commitments.
  • Look for reviews and evaluations of the continuing education course content and learning experience. How do these measure up to the instructors’ descriptions of the course?
  • Ensure that you will be awarded the required CE credits in time for the renewal of your license. Some CE providers may have set times they issue certification, and others may issue certificates on completion or shortly after.

The Motivation & Goal Achievement Masterclass© addresses the key principles underlying proper goal setting, different types of motivation, and ways to realize goals effectively. It also earns you nine APA CE credits.

Maximizing Strengths Masterclass©

Maximizing Strengths Masterclass

A strengths-based approach to working with your clients involves focusing on what is going right in their lives and their positive traits, rather than merely attending to their problems and related psychopathology.

A strengths-based approach boosts clients’ self-efficacy and enhances their confidence by encouraging them to focus on what is going well for them rather than what is going wrong (Pulla, 2017).

This shift in focus further develops their strengths as resources for overcoming life challenges and solving day-to-day problems.

This six-module Maximizing Strengths Masterclass© provides you with all the knowledge, skills, and resources you will need to apply a strengths-based approach to your work and help develop your clients’ unique potential.

This continuing education course explores how clients attend to their strengths, the beliefs they hold about their strengths, motivation for using their strengths, and how to help regulate strengths and prevent their under-use or overuse.

You can learn how to apply a strengths-based approach to your work while earning eight APA-approved CE credits.

The Science of Self-Acceptance Masterclass©

The Science of Self-Acceptance Masterclass

However, the desire to boost self-esteem is one of the greatest threats to wellbeing.

Research findings consistently show that a healthier option than enhanced self-esteem  is self-acceptance because the standards we associate with high self-esteem inevitably set the stage for failure (Chamberlain & Haaga, 2001). We simply cannot live up to such standards consistently, given the challenges, loss, and change that occur throughout life that we cannot control.

The Science of Self-Acceptance Masterclass© will teach you how to help your clients end the unhealthy search for self-esteem. You will learn how to support them developing a sense of being good enough, regardless of failures, external standards, or the approval of others.

When taking this masterclass, you will learn how to:

  • Help your clients build a compassionate and accepting relationship with themselves.
  • Apply hands-on science-based tools and exercises for increasing self-acceptance.
  • Help your clients stop evaluating themselves in terms of external standards.

You will also earn eight APA-approved CE credits to add to your continuing education portfolio. Interested in finding out how to help your clients feel good enough?

Meaning & Valued Living Masterclass©

Meaning & Valued Learning Masterclass

Loneliness , despair, and meaninglessness are pervasive.

If you want to help your clients who are struggling with these issues, then this masterclass is for you. The course examines the causes of this widespread “meaning crisis” and what you can do to help your clients cultivate a life worth living.

This masterclass examines the complex construct of meaning. It begins by defining meaning, different types of meaning, and how to make life more meaningful, before exploring the inherent link between values and meaning.

The course then defines values and discusses the importance of paying attention to values, beliefs about values, and the different types of motivation that uphold values. By pulling all these strands together, the course equips you with science-based methods for promoting value-congruent behavior in your clients.

The Meaning & Valued Living Masterclass© is an online continuing education course for psychologists who want to help their clients identify their values and find a sense of meaning by connecting to their “why” so that they can withstand any “how.” It will also earn eight APA-approved CE credits.

There are three types of continuing professional development (CPD), one of which is also called continuing professional education (CPE).

The types of CPD are:

  • Structured CPD : Active learning involving interactive and participation-based study (this is also called CPE)
  • Reflective CPD : Monitoring your strengths and weaknesses by reflecting on work experiences, for example, in supervision
  • Informal CPD : Self-directed learning like reading research papers CPD focuses on developing existing skills, while CPE more often involves learning new ones or updating your knowledge.

This typically refers to one hour of continuing professional development activity.

Continuing education courses may be tax deductible depending on the country where you work. Check this with your local tax authority. However, tax relief is generally allowable when continuing education is required to maintain a license to practice and/or membership of a professional body.

Become a PACE-approved Provider

AGD’s Program Approval for Continuing Education (PACE) promotes constant improvements in continuing education and makes finding CE easy. The PACE program is based on 13 rigorous standards for identifying high-quality educational organizations. Once recognized as a PACE-approved provider, organizations use those same 13 standards to plan, oversee and evaluate their CE courses. We individually approve only the organizations that meet the PACE standards.

Eligibility Requirements

The AGD PACE Program approves continuing dental education (CDE) organizations, not speakers or individual course content. Eligible organizations must:

  • Offer a planned program of continuing dental education activities.
  • Have a permanent base in the United States, Canada or their territories, or be an officially recognized agency or unit within the national dental services of the United States or Canada. CDE providers that do not fit within this criterion must meet the additional international eligibility requirements provided in the Eligibility Requirements for International Continuing Dental Education Providers section before being considered eligible to apply for recognition.
  • Ensure that all courses offered for continuing education credit have a sound scientific basis in order to adequately protect the public.
  • Demonstrate oversight by a planning committee who ensures that the educational methods are appropriate to the stated objectives for the activity and, when participation is involved, enrollment must be related to available resources to ensure effective participation by enrollees.
  • Ensure that the facilities selected for each activity are appropriate to accomplishing the educational method(s) being used and the stated educational objectives.
  • Assumes the financial and administrative responsibility of planning, publicizing and offering the CDE programs.

Ensures that, upon completion of a course intended toward attainment of certification or other recognition through the CDE provider, participating dentists will not be obligated, as a condition for attaining or maintaining that certification or recognition, to utilize a volume of any products and/or services. Eligibility Requirements for International Continuing Dental Education Providers An International CDE Provider interested in obtaining AGD PACE Approval must:

  • Demonstrate that it is a dental school, continuing education program within a dental school, a national governmental health authority or a national membership association or society for dental professionals.
  • Be recognized and/or accredited by the appropriate governmental or private regulatory authority that regulates organizations to ensure that they meet the applicable standards for quality advance dental education, as determined in the sole discretion of the AGD.
  • Meet the same PACE Eligibility Requirements and Standards and Criteria as providers in the United State and Canada.
  • All application materials and documentation submitted by International CDE Providers must be translated and presented to the AGD in English.

What is Ethical Leadership and Why is it Important?

Ethical leadership is not only the right thing to do, it is key to driving an organization's success.

Valerie Kirk

Errors, bad behavior, and poor judgment in leadership can negatively impact a company’s brand and reputation. For business success, it’s critical for organizations to fill their C-suite with ethical leaders.

Ethical leadership involves leaders and managers making decisions based on the right thing to do for the common good, not just based on what is best for themselves or for the bottom line. While profits are important, ethical leaders take into consideration the needs of customers, communities, and employees in addition to company growth and revenue when making business decisions.

Ethical leaders encourage their team members to model this behavior, too. They help to build a workplace culture that values transparency, collaboration and inclusion, and where everyone feels safe to share their voice.

They can also help organizations recruit and retain top talent. Professionals are increasingly seeking out companies whose leaders strive to do the right thing. Generation Z, who will make up 25 percent of the workforce by 2025, demands leadership ethics more than generations that came before them.

“Gen Z is not going to negotiate. They have really strong values and ethics, and they don’t bend them because of intimidation or because they are just getting a paycheck,” said Michael McCarthy, instructor at Harvard Division of Continuing Education’s Professional & Executive Development and host of the “ Happy at Work ” podcast. “The idea of letting harmful or hurtful behavior slide is not acceptable.”

Leaders who weigh ethical considerations before making key business decisions drive a company’s long-term success.

The 6 Main Principles of Ethical Leadership

Having ethical leaders isn’t as simple as hiring “good” people. Companies should strive to fill their leadership ranks with people who embody the principles of ethical leadership. The six main principles include:

Respect includes valuing others’ skills and contributions. While historically respect in the workplace may have been one-way (leaders demanding respect from employees), in an ethical work environment, respect is mutual.

Mutual respect leads to healthier workplace relationships where both sides appreciate and support what the other is doing and feel secure in talking through issues and challenges. Healthy relationships create positive work environments, which drives increased productivity.

Current and upcoming business leaders should take mutual respect into account as workforce expectations continue to shift.

“I tell current leadership to respect Gen Z. They have values and morals, and you’re going to have a better organization because of them,” McCarthy said. “They aren’t going to put up with the old hierarchy that doesn’t offer mutual respect.”

2. Accountability

Ethical leaders hold themselves accountable for their actions. They make decisions based on integrity and stand behind their work. They also lead by example, communicate openly about challenges, and don’t look to place blame on others for any shortfalls.

Leaders make ethical decisions based on doing what is right for employees, customers, and the community. Because these constituents are always top of mind for ethical leaders, they often have a strong sense of service. They engage in activities such as charitable giving and volunteer work to give  back to their communities — and encourage their teams to do the same.

Leaders who are transparent build trust amongst their organizations and amongst customers.

To build and maintain trust, leaders must be good communicators who speak openly and honestly about issues. Regardless of the issue’s severity or unpopularity, leaders’ responsibility to be clear and candid  empowers others to make the right decisions with the information they have.

Honesty and transparency also help to build a brand’s reputation, leading to long-term customer loyalty.

Justice is not just about following the law, but about ensuring that everyone is getting what they deserve. Ethical leaders approach situations with a focus on treating everyone fairly, and they expect their teams to treat each other and customers the same way. Through their actions, they build equitable work environments where everyone feels respected.

6. Community

Ethical leaders view their companies as communities and consider everyone involved when evaluating situations and making decisions. By viewing their organizations this way, they build equity and inclusion into their decision-making process and create work environments that encourage collaboration across teams.

Examples of Positive and Negative Ethical Leadership

The following three examples are of companies that were faced with ethical dilemmas and how different leadership styles led to vastly different outcomes.

Johnson & Johnson

One of the most famous examples of ethical leadership was the case of the Tylenol cyanide poisonings in the early 1980s. Seven people died of cyanide poisoning, and the only connecting factor was that they had all taken extra-strength Tylenol. During investigation, it was discovered that the tablets were laced with cyanide.

Johnson & Johnson’s leaders acted quickly and pulled all Tylenol products off the shelves — 31 million bottles, worth over $100 million — and stopped all production and advertising. The swiftness of their decision, although costly, put customers’ well-being first and saved lives.

They partnered with law enforcement to find the perpetrator and subsequently developed the first-ever tamper-resistant packaging. They were transparent with the public about what they were doing to ensure this tragedy never happened again.

The Tylenol brand recovered from the incident, largely because of Johnson & Johnson’s ethical leadership team’s swift action and transparent care for customers.

In 2008, JetBlue left passengers stranded on the tarmac at the John F. Kennedy International Airport for more than five hours during a snowstorm. The delay had a ripple effect — JetBlue had to cancel more than 1,000 flights over the following five days.

In response, JetBlue’s CEO wrote a letter of apology to customers. He also directed his team to draft a customer bill of rights, which outlined customers’ rights to information about flights and information about compensation in the event of delays or cancellations.

The CEO also participated in a public apology tour, taking full responsibility for the incident rather than blaming it on the weather.

His transparency and accountability created trust with customers, who stayed loyal to the airline.

Wells Fargo

In September 2016 , it was revealed that employees of Wells Fargo, one of the largest banks in the United States, opened millions of unauthorized accounts in order to meet aggressive sales targets. This widespread fraudulent activity was the result of a work culture that prioritized quantity over quality and pushed employees to engage in unethical practices.

Company leaders denied knowledge of fraudulent practices. The bank was hit with significant financial penalties, but because of the lack of accountability, they damaged the trust of their customers and investors. They reported a 50 percent profit loss in the quarter following the scandal.

Meeting the Ethical Challenges of Leadership

Companies cannot underestimate the power of different leadership styles on their growth and long term success. Those who practice ethical leadership have positive corporate cultures where employees are engaged, motivated, and feel good about coming to work. Companies without ethical leadership face lower productivity and high turnover rates, impacting the organization’s bottom line.

Ethical leaders aren’t just born with these skills — they develop them over years of experience and training.

Harvard DCE Professional & Executive Development offers a two-day Ethical Leadership program that helps leaders develop skills to make ethical choices and lead companies through challenging dilemmas.

Topics covered include:

  • Making ethical decisions with conflicting responsibilities
  • Building a moral framework within yourself and the organization
  • Understanding the role of employees in both their professional and personal lives
  • Navigating a slippery slope when seemingly good people do bad things
  • Building a corporate culture that values moral behavior

Learn more about the ethical leadership program, including how to register.

Leaders looking to expand their ethical leadership skills should also consider the two-day Authentic Leadership program , where they will learn how to develop mindfulness and authenticity to build trust, create engagement, and promote productivity.

Robotic welding coming to College of Continuing Education

April 19, 2024 | san diego community college district.

Student welders at San Diego College of Continuing Education will soon be adding new skills to their repertoire — coding and robotics — for free. While they already have access to five tuition-free welding certificates: Shielding Metal Arc Welding; Gas Metal and Flux Cored Arc Welding; Gas Tungsten Arc Welding and Pipe Welding, a $300,000 technology upgrade is underway.

The 100,000 square foot welding facility located at the Educational Cultural Complex (4343 Ocean View Blvd.) will be equipped with a plasma cutter robot, a welder robot, electrical upgrades to equipment installed in the 1970s, as well as new smart TVs and cameras for HyFlex teaching.

Learn more about the welding program

“We are so proud to bring an emerging equitable opportunity to Southeastern San Diego,” said Brad Dorschel, Master Welder and Skilled and Technical Trades Program Chair at the SDCCE. “I am certain you cannot learn robotic welding anywhere else in the nation without a cost. The knowledge our students will gain here will transfer to all industrial robotic industries.”

“San Diego College of Continuing Education was truly designed to alleviate poverty. Our unique college is a noncredit college offering short term certificates that offer state licenses or skilled gains for the workforce. Our students typically come from significantly diverse and socioeconomically disadvantaged backgrounds. Giving them access to learn a high demand industry paired with futuristic technology makes them very competitive candidates for the workforce,” said College of Continuing Education, President Dr. Tina M. King.

While robots will not replace human welders, Dorschel explained the purpose of robotic welders is to troubleshoot weld parameters, increasing efficiency and productivity. The Department of Labor projects a 26% growth in industrial automation (robotic) jobs by 2030.

The college’s integration of robotic machinery into the certificate program is an exciting advantage for the future generation of welders; Andrea Rosas, Angel Espinoza, Jack Finocchio, and Howard Rivera.

The opportunity to work with robots feels reminiscent for Rosas, 30. When she was a girl scout cadet, Rosas designed robotics camps for young girls where they could build, troubleshoot, and code for competitions. She then left San Bernardino to move to Oahu, Hawaii to study criminal justice. “I enjoyed my major but robotics and working in a trade were always in the back of mind.” After studying at Chaminade University of Honolulu, Rosas moved to San Diego and was inspired by her uncle, a successful architect, to pursue welding. “I wanted to go back to school but didn’t have the means to do so. I was amazed when I got here [to SDCCE] that this welding school is free.” Now Rosas has her dream set on becoming an underwater welder, combining her love for the ocean and metal fabrication.

Before coming to the College of Continuing Education Espinoza, 24, attended Miramar College for biotechnology. “When classes started to become too hard to manage between work and school, I had to leave to focus on my job,” explained Espinoza. “San Diego is so expensive. The door to go to college opened again for Espinoza while Working as a Fire Watch at General Dynamics NASSCO. “I learned about the College of Continuing Education’s welding program through my coworkers. Now welding is my passion,” he said.  SDCCE’s shielded metal arc welding curriculum led Espinoza to a promotion as a fitter for NASSCO. His long-term goal is to become a welding instructor. The college’s technology upgrades will be an asset. “The future is technology. Learning robotics will open a lot of doors.”

Space enthusiast, Finocchio, 24, sees his future in Aerospace welding, building rockets and launching space stations. On track to achieve his dream, Finocchio studied aerospace engineering for three years at San Diego State University (SDSU). “Unfortunately Covid happened and disrupted my education. During the pandemic, I decided I didn’t want to go there anymore and I took an interest in welding,” he explained. “I tried to work in an apprenticeship without schooling but that path didn’t work for me. So I decided to come here because the community college system is affordable. I still have loans from SDSU, with this it feels good to not have tuition weighing over my head.” Finocchio works in the hospitality industry, but with a yearn for space travel, and physics, he looks forward to starting work with economic upward mobility, in the shipyards. “There is so much more growth to be had in welding from travel to aerospace. I just need the experience first to build my career. Here at [SDCCE] you can do something wrong and learn how to do it better.”

San Diego native Rivera, 21, dabbled in a few career paths before he discovered welding. Right after graduating from Morse High School, he enrolled at the College of Continuing Education due to the lack of tuition cost. He first tried culinary arts and plumbing. “Culinary was fun, it helped me land a job as a lead cook at Applebees but being in the kitchen can get overwhelming,” he said. “Plumbing has a lot of rules, I don’t think it is for me but I have my certifications in case I want to do it.” Now Rivera is on track to complete all five welding certificates from the SDCCE to become a pipe welder.

In addition to the new robots and HyFlex technology coming this summer, SDCCE secured a $1.175 million in funds from BlueForge Alliance in October 2023, to double the size of its welding lab as part of a comprehensive effort addressing a shortage of skilled welders. Plans for expansion are in progress.

Welding is among the highest paying skilled trades in the country. Welders in San Diego County are earning an average of $73,531 annually, according to the California Employment Development Department, which projects 42,600 job openings for welders, cutters, solderers, and brazers each year, on average, over the decade.

Enrollment for summer session opens on Monday, May 13, 2024. For more information visit San Diego College of Continuing Education .
