2022 Project Management Trends: A Look Ahead

ProjectManager

The effects of the pandemic have infiltrated every industry, and project management is no exception. The industry continues to evolve. Project management trends that were once standard are slowly being replaced by modern and innovative solutions.

The new Global Trends in Project Management 2022 report, released today by ProjectManager, taps the insights of more than 600 project management professionals to determine how project teams—and the way they work—are shifting.

Hybrid Work is One of the Top Project Management Trends for 2022

Among the most interesting findings? Emerging project management trends such as the increase in remote work, the utilization of multiple project management methodologies and the decrease in formal project management disciplines all point in one direction: hybrid teams.

Hybrid teams are teams that collaborate in multiple locations and with different methodologies. Organizations are beginning to embrace hybrid teams because they offer flexibility to their employees.

It may sound like a buzz phrase, but hybrid teams are here to stay—and the data from our Global Trends in Project Management 2022 report illustrates this shift in the global workforce. We encourage the project management community at large to leverage these insights for a better, more productive working environment this upcoming year and beyond.

Trend #1: Challenges of Remote Work

Perhaps the most readily apparent project management trend is that more and more teams are transitioning into a remote working environment; not only in the United States, but across the globe. Of our survey participants, 59% currently work remotely, with this number likely to increase moving forward.

With a growing number of employees transitioning into a remote working environment, there are fewer opportunities for face-to-face communication. This presents an opening for collaboration platforms that keep projects progressing accurately and within budget.

Another challenge of remote work is finding an effective way to collaborate across teams. Remote workers need the ability to work well within their own team, of course. But they also need to communicate across multiple departments to deliver business value. This shift requires seamless collaboration and effective communication to ensure all individuals are on the same page.

Other noteworthy challenges of remote work include distractions such as pets, children and significant others, less socialization with coworkers (which impedes team building and camaraderie), less work-life balance, time zone differences, and feelings of isolation. As the world continues to transition into remote work, additional tools and methodologies will need to emerge.

For additional information and statistics on remote work, be sure to download our free Global Trends in Project Management 2022 report.

Trend #2: There’s No Right or Wrong Project Management Methodologies

Our report also highlights a shift away from a single project management methodology in favor of more hybrid approaches. Traditional project management tools, such as a Gantt chart or a kanban board, have been around for decades. Project managers use them to bring consistent success to their projects across the globe.

Many projects also use either agile or waterfall methodologies when establishing plans at the outset of the project.

project management trends graph with data on hybrid project management

However, today’s changing landscape requires additional flexibility that these traditional approaches may not provide. Many of our respondents noted using a combination of approaches (or no formal methodology at all) in how they approach their new projects. Tapping into multiple tools and methodologies, instead of sticking to one, has become a project management trend across all industries.

Trend #3: A Mixture of Formal & Informal Project Managers

As a leading project management software, ProjectManager is well aware that the line between formal project managers and individuals who manage projects is blurry. Many individuals end up taking on roles that require them to act as informal project managers—despite not having an official “project manager” title.

Our findings may surprise you. Of the 630 individuals surveyed, almost 30% were not hired with the intention of being full-time project managers. Despite not having “project manager” as part of their title, these individuals are still expected to possess a project manager’s skills.

advertisement for project management trends ebook with a stat about project management training

181 Project Management Research Topics: Helpful List

project management research topics

Project management is using specific knowledge, tools, techniques, and skills to deliver something valuable to people. There are different types of projects that are normally undertaken to make an impact on society.

Most projects are normally used to help make the world or society a better place. The projects are normally efforts to create value through a unique product or service that wasn’t in existence before.

How To Do Good Research For A Thesis

If you want to succeed in your thesis, research project, or dissertation, you need to put your best foot forward. However, you will first need to consult your professor to see whether your chosen topic is adequate for your thesis.

Choose A Topic: The first thing is browsing through a wide variety of topics and finding the right one for your thesis. Let’s say you want to get an ideal project management topic. You can browse through all these topics and find the best that you can use. However, remember, you need to be interested in that field so that you can feel excited while doing the research. Furthermore, try to select a topic that has also been researched before by other scholars. It doesn’t necessarily need to be the same topic but at least something similar. Search For Research Sources: Once you have known the topic you want to do. Try and search for the topic’s sources. Try and see whether you can find valuable information regarding the same. Your research needs to be based on proven facts and statistics. Hence, make use of Google Scholar, Google Books, or Microsoft Academic. You can’t miss finding something similar to what you are actively looking for. Also, remember to use numerous websites, online libraries, and much more. Remember to create short notes for the same. Create A Thesis Statement: Once you have gotten as much background information as you wish, you can now create a thesis statement. Continue adding short notes with all the new information that you are getting. The purpose of the thesis statement is to explain what the entire research paper will be dedicated to. The thesis helps to explain the subject of your research, how you will reach your goal methods to justify your point, and what you expect to obtain as a result. Also, remember, your thesis statement needs to be approved by your professor. Write A Draft: By now you should have gotten some valuable information. You can then use that to write a draft or a rough outline. This draft is equally important as the final version. The advantage is that you can add as many points as you wish and then simplify them as you go on. Know what to include and what to omit. Write The Final Version: Use all the resources and try to write the final version. Remember to have your references, sources cited, and bibliography formatted. Remember, the final version should be presentable. You wouldn’t want to repeat your thesis all over again. Give it your best shot. Also, remember to proofread to ensure that the grammar is correct. That’s it.

6 Project Management Trends to Expect in 2022

December 20, 2021 - 10 min read

Maria Waida

Project management will undergo significant changes this coming year. Worldwide physical and cultural events are shaping every new project management trend happening in the industry. They may even be transforming the entire project management discipline. Keep reading to stay in the know about some of the most notable changes, alongside our predictions for what to expect in the near future.

What are the current trends in project management?

While we all want to see into the future of project management trends, these current industry ideas are sure to influence project management teams for months to come:

Improving communication across blended teams

Effective communication skills are required to stay motivated during and after the pandemic. This means having the necessary tools and expertise to work remotely. Today’s project managers must learn how to use systems that overcome the challenges of working from home . Not only does improving communication increase productivity, but it may also improve mental health in the workplace after the pandemic .

Maximizing the effectiveness of hybrid and remote work

Even after the global pandemic has subsided, the hybrid work model will still be a staple of business moving forward. There are many advantages to having face-to-face interaction with employees. However, this interaction will require the use of new technology and strategies to manage it properly.

Embracing Agile as a means to combine strategy with output

In 2022, companies will need to ensure that their teams are Agile and fast-moving. Instead of having a one-size-fits-all framework, teams will need to have the knowledge and experience necessary to choose strategic frameworks that fit their needs.

Over the past year, more companies have started using Agile methods to improve their project management processes . We would expect them to increase their usage in the coming years.

A prediction of future trends in project management

Based on our experience and research, we believe that the following future trends in project management are worth exploring. Use each one to better understand your goals for the upcoming year and what the industry may look like in a few months' time.

1. Fully remote project teams

The onset of the coronavirus pandemic forced many organizations to rethink their work-from-home policies . As a result, many workers in the US have shifted to working from home full- or part-time. That means project management is no longer confined to the typical office.

Some tasks are more easily carried out when team members are located close to one another. For instance, team building exercises are less time-consuming when done face-to-face. Despite the challenges, remote work has many advantages that can help organizations attract and retain top talent. For instance, it allows employees to work from anywhere in the world.

Alongside that, full-time employees are increasingly working as members of dispersed, global teams, communicating and coordinating via online software and apps. Technology plays a huge role in that. Meetings are held via Zoom, tasks are tracked in a project management tool, and schedules are developed and delivered to team members entirely online.

Since the rise of remote work is likely to continue, project managers need to find ways to reduce friction and make their work more efficient. So the question to ask yourself is: can you improve your projects by bringing on freelancers or remote workers ? If the answer is yes, don't hold back because of technology complications — the right tech exists to support you.

2. An increased dependency on project management tools

Project management has always been a tool for carrying out goals and managing risk. Over the years, however, its scope has broadened to encompass a wide range of activities and initiatives.

Project management tools help organizations execute their strategy but they can also be used to manage the portfolio and the various tasks related to that strategy. Doing so will help them make more informed decisions and improve their organizations' progress on key goals while providing more value .

There are external project management trends affecting our dependence on these tools too. As the world changes due to the rise of artificial intelligence and machine learning , project management will be affected by the need to collect and analyze vast amounts of data. Exactly how this will play out is difficult to predict but most experts agree that it will be unavoidable.

3. A focus on enhanced collaboration

The true digital transformation of project management should be complete by the end of 2022. We’re referring to relying on online tools for collaboration and coordination between teams, and not just complex back-and-forth email exchanges.

New remote, hybrid, and flexible working options allow employees to work wherever they want, while employers benefit from the higher quality output of their workers. Despite the advantages of distributed teams, it can be very challenging to promote collaboration among the employees.

In an effort to solve this issue, many companies have started implementing online project management tools. For example, some teams use multimedia conferencing so that remote workers can still meet and communicate with their in-house counterparts. Others use project management software such as Wrike to plan, schedule, and monitor progress across all active initiatives.

No matter which tools you choose to use in 2022, one thing is clear: learning how to work well with others despite physical barriers will continue to be essential as we continue to deal with the global pandemic.

4. Understanding different types of soft skills

Project managers typically need a certain level of expertise in various areas of operations in order to be successful in their roles. However, without the right combination of soft skills, they may not be able to effectively manage people and produce the best results.

First and foremost, the ability to communicate expectations and work well with all parties involved is very important. This is why soft skills such as empathy, decision-making, and leadership are critical to a project's success. A project manager who has these abilities plays a critical role in improving the entire team’s performance as both a model for behavior and setting the tone for workplace culture.

Because at the end of the day, the project manager will determine the level of cooperation between the team members until the project is finished.

Wondering how to stay ahead of the curve and improve your own soft skills? Here are some tips to practice:

  • Don’t make assumptions about what others are thinking and feeling. Encourage discussion and always get important project details in writing.
  • Encourage employees to be themselves, contribute to project planning, and express their personalities.
  • Connect on a deeper level with individual team members by asking questions about their life outside of work.
  • Learn how to properly apologize and resolve an argument for yourself and for others.
  • Be open to feedback. You can always learn and improve.

5. Emphasis on avoiding physical and mental stress

In 2022, we predict you'll be more challenged by employee development than employee retention, requiring your new team members to settle in faster with optimized training programs and work delegated to new team members sooner. Avoiding physical and mental stress will be a large part of keeping employees happy, healthy, and on your team.

You may not realize it but there are a lot of ways you can make work smoother for your entire team. Here’s how:

  • Set clear expectations with goals and deadlines This method would allow your team members to focus on the things that they're good at and not on the things that they're not good at. It would also prevent them from accidentally repeating the same exercises or processes.
  • Offer schedule flexibility Everyone wants to work more flexible hours. This is why it is important to allow your team members to work without being monitored often. They can only complete their work once specific deadlines have been met. Address issues, if they ever come up, and focus on making work easier for everyone involved. You can also provide more freedom in terms of where employees can work from. Offer at least one work from home day per week or month. Or, if your employees are local and have been entirely remote, give them a desk to come in and work from if they ever need it.
  • Make fitness part of workplace culture Your staff members should take time to exercise. Some ways to ensure this include offering some assistance through onsite yoga classes, walking meetings, or even small activities such as a group stretching session every morning.
  • Offer more praise than criticism Great managers recognize the efforts of their team members. They can either congratulate them on a great job in private or make a small announcement about their achievements during a weekly meeting. Even a small acknowledgment of someone’s hard work can make a big difference in how they feel about the project so far.

6. A continued concentration on Agile methodology

Agile development is a set of principles that enables developers to get started with projects without having to learn how to manage traditional tasks and processes. With Agile, teams can easily break down a project into multiple stages, allowing them to manage the work seamlessly. It also allows them to collaborate more effectively with project stakeholders.

Not only is it more adaptable—a must now that we’re seeing a renewed importance on remote work flexibility and increased attention on how we collaborate—but it’s also completely customizable.

How Wrike will help with project management in 2022

14 Project Management Trends Emerging in 2024

Businesswoman giving presentation with graph to a group of people

John F. Kennedy once said, “Change is the law of life, and those who look only to the past and present are certain to miss the future,” and nowhere is this more apparent than in the field of project management.

Over the years, the project management landscape has seen drastic changes that have led organizations to move from sticky notes to enterprise SaaS solutions. With the advent of newer technologies and management paradigms, project management continues to undergo significant evolution, and organizations need to keep up with these changes or risk failure.

With that in mind, we asked experts for their advice on what will be shaping and shaking the world of project management in 2024. Based on that, we’ve compiled our top 14 project management predictions.

1. Increased Focus on Automation

Thilo Huellmann, Chief Technology Officer at Levity.ai , notes that automation holds immense promise.

“By automating low-value-add tasks, project managers may focus their efforts and energy on tasks that will most dramatically benefit their businesses, allowing them to affect greater change, increasing the possibility of each project reaching its strategic goals.”

For automation, recent years have seen AI adoption on a larger scale by organizations to ensure successful project completion in several ways, such as:

  • Generating performance insights
  • Supporting the decision-making processes
  • Making estimates and predictions
  • Optimizing resource scheduling
  • Enabling data visualization
  • Performing risk analysis

Project Management Institute notes that 81% of professionals say AI is impacting their organizations. That number is likely to increase further in 2024 and the coming years.

2. Generative AI to Become the Norm

While AI remains one of the most important project management trends, Generative AI requires special attention, given how radical and transformative the technology is. With GenAI, there’s bound to be a tectonic shift in how project managers operate.

From project planning to execution to delivery, GenAI possesses the potential to transform every aspect of project management. For example, GenAI tools can help project managers quickly design project plans by accounting for potential risks and scenarios.

These tools can go further by actively preparing resource allocation based on the project requirements and goals. Project managers may also be able to use GenAI to proactively monitor project progress and provide live insights and recommendations for course corrections.

Of course, these tools can even automate a range of project tasks by generating high-quality content for reporting and documentation. As such, project managers are bound to add more GenAI tools to their arsenal in the coming years.

3. Advanced Resource and Project Management Software

A 2020 report from Wellingtone notes that 54% of organizations lack access to real-time KPIs for their projects and over a third of them spend over 24 hours collecting data. This underlines how they can no longer ignore project management tools.

Combined with AI-based automation capabilities, project management software can bring about positive changes in how organizations manage their projects, no matter how complex they are.

Here are some ways that the right software can make a massive difference:

  • Leverage historical project data to make better bids and plans for future projects
  • View resource availability, skills, and other details to simplify allocation
  • Automatically track all time spent on tasks and projects through AI
  • Quickly allocate and track budgets to stay on top of financials
  • Capture all expenses with invoices for all projects in real time
  • Track all projects through customizable dashboards and make more informed decisions on the fly
  • Keep all stakeholders and team members informed of project status, progress and changes made in real time.

4. Rise in Hybrid Working

The global pandemic forced organizations to let employees telecommute due to safety concerns. This is no longer the case, with many organizations trying to bring back employees to the office. However, there has been resistance from employees given the greater flexibility they enjoyed while working from home.

In fact, a Gallup study found that 6 in 10 employees preferred a hybrid work arrangement, with one-third of surveyed respondents preferring fully remote work.

Chart showing rise in remote working

As a result, project and resource managers need to continue developing their strategies for managing a distributed workforce and solving the associated challenges.

Cloud-based project management software can play a crucial role in these circumstances. These tools can be easily deployed globally for hybrid or remote workforces, allowing them to seamlessly stay on top of their tasks and projects.

The software can capture all the relevant data that needs to be tracked, verified and used by project managers. It can use this to make more informed decisions in real time, irrespective of shift timings and locations.

5. Demand for Emotionally Intelligent Leaders

While organizational and analytical skills are necessary for project managers, there has been an increasing demand for emotional intelligence in recent years. The Future of Jobs report by the World Economic Forum supports the increasing demand by employers for emotional intelligence and other social skills.

This is relevant for project managers since, in essence, their work involves having a deep understanding of people. To lead projects to success, they must manage their human resources more effectively. To do so, they must understand those people first.

The ability to connect and empathize with others has become more important than ever. And that’s due to one of the other project management trends – the rise in remote working.

An excellent example of leveraging emotional intelligence for the greater good comes from Dave Birdsall, senior manager at The Parker Avery Group. He has noticed the interesting project management trend of scheduling daily touch point meetings for more than just work.

“…the agendas for these daily stand-ups are no longer just about work. These meetings not only serve as a means to keep tabs on work items but also give people an outlet to socialize. I have found by doing this, I am able to stay on top of what people are working on and ensure that their work-life balance is not suffering.”

6. Increasing Focus on Data Analytics for Data-Driven Project Management

Organizations of all sizes generate copious amounts of data every day. Therefore, it’s only intelligent to leverage that data to drive decisions. Data analytics and reporting can help project managers identify early signs of scope creep, measure project progress rates and more.

AI-powered analytics provide a complete picture of the entire organization and all projects. They deliver granular-level visibility into the activities and generate custom reports to help visualize the data exactly as project managers need them. With these tools, project managers can make informed decisions in real time instead of making gut-based decisions based on manually compiled reports.

7. Hybrid Project Management

In the post-pandemic era, there have been renewed efforts to find a more reliable and efficient methodology for project success. To that end, organizations have begun experimenting with a hybrid approach in which they combine different elements from two or more project management methodologies .

It’s no longer about agile, scrum or lean only but rather about bringing specific attributes together for increased flexibility in driving project success. Doing this has enabled organizations to find unique approaches to suit specific industries and projects.

The hybrid concept extends to the development of project team structures as well. Olivia Montgomery, a Project Management Expert at Capterra, recently wrote an article on the subject of hybrid project management .

She mentions how their survey “found that 37% of teams are cross functional led by a dedicated PM. In addition to leveraging untapped skills from new team members, cross-functional teams can share their department’s best practices for the project team to then decide whether or not they want to incorporate into their own processes”.

8. Increasing Emphasis on Soft Skills

Traditionally, the value of project managers depended on their certifications and their skills in implementing different methodologies. However, more and more organizations are now shifting their focus to soft skills.

This project management trend is understandable as AI-powered solutions have become capable enough to handle the trickier technical parts of project management. Managers are free to focus on other responsibilities and that’s where soft skills become necessary.

Project managers will need to increase their focus on strengthening their soft skills, such as conflict resolution, stakeholder engagement, negotiation, mentoring and training, decision-making, and team building. Developing these skills will help project managers deliver more value to their organization.

9. Projects and Organizational Strategy Coming Together

Projects and organizational strategy have traditionally been separate domains. Essentially, the role of a project manager was only to execute projects to successful conclusions. However, current trends in project management show that this role is now being expanded upon. Project managers are taking on a more hands-on role in executing the broader organizational strategy.

This situation is understandable since organizations have had a difficult time executing their strategy and acting upon them. That’s why project managers are increasingly being asked to focus on understanding the relationship that exists between program, portfolio and project management.

This allows an organization to see how individual projects are related to each other and how these connect with the overall strategic goals of an organization.

10. Cloud-first Approach Becoming The Standard

The demand for cloud computing solutions is increasing rapidly, with more and more organizations shifting to the cloud to keep up with the changes in how they operate. To expand their operations, organizations are looking for cost-effective measures that don’t sacrifice functionality or performance. That makes cloud computing the ideal solution.

The rise in hybrid and remote working environments has also increased the focus on cloud solutions. These enable resources to work from anywhere without losing access to critical business applications.

Additionally, cloud solutions have become more accessible and flexible, making them easier to adopt. With all these changes, it’s quite likely that a cloud-first approach will become the new standard for managing projects intelligently for organizations everywhere.

11. Growing Attention on Mental Health

There has been a growing focus on mental health in recent years. With organizations beginning to reopen offices or shift to hybrid or remote working, there are bound to be elevated stress levels among employees who have to acclimatize to these changes. To keep their employees motivated and productive, organizations must seek ways to help them manage stress and mental health effectively.

There are several steps that organizations can take to prioritize their employees’ mental health . To start, organizations can implement flexible hours to give their employees more freedom with “how” they work. Fitness programs also make for a good option.

Apart from that, from a project management perspective, managers should set clear expectations on project deadlines and goals while trying to offer more praise than criticism. These are just a few steps that organizations can start implementing for the improved mental health of their employees.

12. Focus on Change Management

The increased flexibility offered by remote and hybrid working, while offering some major benefits, has also created several challenges in collaboration and communication. Left unchecked, these challenges can easily derail a well-laid project plan. To avoid such a disruptive scenario, proper change management is necessary. This is particularly relevant given the ongoing global macroeconomic challenges affecting organizations everywhere.

By developing the skills required for effective change management, project managers can rapidly modify strategies to successfully deliver projects in the face of distraction or disruption. It’s vital to review and assess the change management performance regularly to determine areas of improvement.

Feedback from team members is an essential component of refining change management processes. Managers also need real-time data for faster and more effective decision making. With time and proper skill development, project managers can become capable of initiating major change programs without hurting the performance or productivity of their teams.

13. Implementing Strong Cybersecurity Measures

According to Statista, the cost of cybercrime globally is projected to increase at an alarming rate – from $8.44 trillion in 2022 to a shocking $23.84 trillion by 2027. With organizations moving towards digitizing their ecosystems and embracing remote and hybrid work models, cybersecurity is more critical than ever.

Protecting an organization from all forms of cyberattacks requires proactive planning and training. Project managers can support cybersecurity initiatives by developing a culture of awareness and shared responsibility. They can work together with IT, HR and cybersecurity teams to implement best practices and training sessions for project teams.

Even seemingly simple measures, such as leveraging role-based permissions for project management and other tools, can go a long way in safeguarding the organization and its data.

14. Blockchain Enters Project Management

Recent years have seen blockchain rising to become one of the most sought-after technologies in the world. It’s also gaining significant traction in the project management landscape, where it can enhance data integrity and security while decentralizing project governance.

The primary benefit of blockchain is its ability to create project records that are secure from potential tampering. Project records and financial transactions remain secure from unauthorized access, ensuring that all project documentation remains trustworthy.

There’s a reduced risk of potential data errors and manipulation, allowing for a more transparent and accountable project management process.

These project management trends should also help project managers understand the steps they must take to drive operational efficiency. This is particularly important for organizations in the professional services industry.
