Football, or soccer as it is known in some regions of the world, is more than simply a game involving a ball, two teams, and a field. It is a phenomena that unites individuals, fosters a sense of belonging, and stirs up powerful feelings.

2 Minute Speech on Why Football Is the World’s Favourite Game!

Red Lighted Candles Christmas Gift

The whistle blows and from the centre the ball is kicked. The kick off begins a series of passes, dribbles, free kicks, throw-ins, tackles gentle and wild, headers, and finally Goal! In 90 minutes divided into two equal halves you see a miniature of life. It is action-packed, with fortune swinging both ways, a procession of mistakes with yellow and red cards shown, agony and ecstasy, hard work, perspiration, and wild joy when scoring goals.

Blood Jesus Cleanse

In these 90 minutes of play legends are born of the like of Pele, Maradona, Lionel Messi, Cristiano Ronaldo, Neymar, Zidane, Lev Yashin, Sir Bobby Charlton, Beckham, Lothar Mathaus, Garrincha, Platini, Ronaldo, Franz Beckenbauer, Johann Cryff, Roger Milla, Paolo Rossi, Iniesta, Gerd Muller, etc. The list is practically endless.

They are great strikers, dribblers of the ball, free kick specialists, goal keepers, creative mid fielders controlling the game, exponents of total football, leaders with charisma and influence and the ability to entertain at the highest level of the game.

Now what makes football special? First and foremost, in a span of 90 minutes it entertains. We find the best of men in action. We find game plans and strategies being executed. We find coaches some nervous, some cool, some sitting still, some pacing on the sidelines giving instructions and shouting at his players to follow their well thought out plans.

Secondly, football is not just about individual brilliance. Of course, talent is needed. But more importantly, you play best when you play in the position you are good at. If you are the centre forward, no good playing in defence. What counts is teamwork. The best goal scorer cannot do it on his own unless some in his team creates a winning pass. As far as team work is concerned, football is one hundred per cent a team game.

Thirdly, football has a religious kind of fan following which seems to be universal unlike any other sports and games. Football fans will go to any length to watch their favourite player, club, or national team play. The No. 10 Jersey is often reserved for the best player in the team. There are endless debates about who the greatest player is. And a very critical role is played by the coach too.

Fourth, there are emotions on the football field like no other. One penalty missed, one mistake by a great goalie; all spell disaster and players and fans cry alike. There has been a host of great players who never made it big on the world cup stage. They promised big, but delivered not; they were talented plentifully, but failed to capitalize on it.

Some were heroes in one day’s game and became traitors in the next; missed penalty kicks and chances being the villains. On the other hand occasionally you saw some teams come back from being a couple of goals down to win the game. There were hat tricks that were sensations. saves that mesmerized, penalty shoot outs and sudden deaths that sent your hearts racing.

Finally, let me end with these famous lines of the late American sportswriter Henry Grantland Rice in his poem Alumnus Football:

“For when the One Great Scorer comes To mark against your name, He writes – not that you won or lost – But how you played the Game.”

Yes friends, world cup football is a time when legends are born. They are remembered not just for the goals scored but for the way they played the game. Their talent, class, elegance, charisma, strength, speed, accuracy, team playing abilities, performance, sportsmanship, and goal-scoring moments will remain in our minds for a long time to come. No wonder why football is the world’s favourite game.

During the 1950s and 1960s, Syed Abdul Rahim oversaw and coached the Indian national football team, which achieved great success due to his efforts. William Neckard

From famous speeches by athletes to legendary speeches by coaches, many of the most memorable sentiments in sports history are here on this sports speech list. This list includes motivational speeches for athletes, pump up speeches, and just the most all around famous sport speeches.

If " great moments are born from great opportunity ," then these famous sports speeches helped those opportunities become great moments by providing the motivation to achieve the impossible. What are the most famous sports speeches? From the pre-game pump-up speeches by coaches before championship games to the reflection speeches given after great careers, these famous sports speeches are some of the best ever.

What are the greatest speeches in sports? While sports movies like Any Given Sunday  and Hoosiers give plenty of fictional inspiring speeches , these speeches took place in real life and inspired generations to come.

Jimmy Valvano

Jimmy Valvano

Appearing at the first ESPY Awards on March 3, 1993, former North Carolina State basketball coach Jimmy Valvano gave an emotional and motivational speech while accepting the Arthur Ashe Courage and Humanitarian Award. Valvano was suffering from cancer at the time, announcing The V Foundation and urging everyone to laugh, think and cry everyday, words that also appeared on his tombstone after he lost his battle with cancer less than two months later.

Lou Gehrig

Showing strength and optimism in the face of adversity, baseball legend Lou Gehrig gave the famous "Luckiest Man on the Face of the Earth" speech during a New York Yankees game on July 4, 1939, which was also deemed Lou Gehrig Appreciation Day.

Only days earlier, the six-time World Series champion had retired from the game after he was diagnosed with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), also known as Lou Gehrig's disease.

"Fans, for the past two weeks you have been reading about the bad break I got. Yet today I consider myself the luckiest man on the face of the earth. I have been in ballparks for seventeen years and have never received anything but kindness and encouragement from you fans... So I close in saying that I might have been given a bad break, but I've got an awful lot to live for. Thank you."

Herb Brooks

Herb Brooks

Speaking to his players prior to a game at the 1980 Winter Olympics, legendary hockey coach Herb Brooks inspired his squad to complete the impossible and beat the dominant Soviet team. They did just that, completing the "Miracle on Ice" and went on to win the gold medal.

Though the original speech was done in a private locker room, in the 2004 film Miracle , Kurt Russell recreated the speech.

"Great moments are born from great opportunity, and that's what you have here tonight, boys. That's what you've earned here tonight. One game; if we played them ten times, they might win nine. But not this game, not tonight. Tonight, we skate with them. Tonight we stay with them, and we shut them down because we can. Tonight, we are the greatest hockey team in the world. You were born to be hockey players—every one of you, and you were meant to be here tonight. This is your time. Their time is done. It's over. I'm sick and tired of hearing about what a great hockey team the Soviets have. Screw 'em. This is your time. Now go out there and take it!"

Muhammad Ali

Muhammad Ali

Prior to fighting George Foreman on October 30, 1974, Muhammad Ali read this poem as part of the build-up for the fight known as "The Rumble in the Jungle." Ali won the fight in the eighth round, pulling off one of the biggest upsets in the history of boxing.

Babe Ruth

Frail and in pain from nasopharyngeal carcinoma, the legendary baseball player Babe Ruth made one last appearance at Yankee Stadium for "Babe Ruth Day" on April 27, 1947, to give his farewell speech. The Bambino addressed the sell-out crowd of over 60,000 by reflecting on his journey to the big leagues and inspiring generations to follow in his footsteps.

"Thank you very much, ladies and gentlemen.

You know how bad my voice sounds -- well it feels just as bad.

You know this baseball game of ours comes up from the youth. That means the boys.

And after you're a boy and grow up to know how to play ball, then you come to the boys you see representing themselves today in your national pastime, the only real game -- I think -- in the world, baseball.

As a rule, some people think if you give them a football, or a baseball, or something like that -- naturally they're athletes right away.

But you can't do that in baseball.

You've gotta start from way down [at] the bottom, when you're six or seven years of age. You can't wait until you're fifteen or sixteen. You gotta let it grow up with you. And if you're successful, and you try hard enough, you're bound to come out on top -- just like these boys have come to the top now.

There's been so many lovely things said about me, and I'm glad that I've had the opportunity to thank everybody.

Vince Lombardi

Vince Lombardi

Easily considered one of the best National Football League coaches ever, the great Vince Lombardi gave this final speech to his players on the Green Bay Packers prior to Super Bowl II on January 14, 1968. Lombardi's team defeated the Oakland Raiders 33-14 to win their second-consecutive Super Bowl. His legacy was later honored with the Super Bowl trophy being renamed the Lombardi Trophy.

Michael Irvin

Michael Irvin

Following a career with a few speed bumps, former Dallas Cowboys wide receiver reflected as he was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame on August 4, 2007. "The Playmaker" was emotional during the speech as he talked about mistakes he made, his relationship with his family and why no one should ever give up.

"I doubted I would ever have the chance to stand before you today. So when I returned home, I spoke with Michael and Elijah . I said, That's how you do it, son. You do it like they did it. Michael asked, he said, Dad, do you ever think we will be there? And I didn't know how to answer that. And it returned me to that threshing floor. This time I was voiceless, but my heart cried out. God, why must I go through so many peaks and valleys?

I wanted to stand in front of my boys and say, Do it like your dad, like any proud dad would want to. Why must I go through so much?

Knute Rockne

Knute Rockne

Immortalized in the college football movie "Rudy," Notre Dame football coach Knute Rockne is remembered for two notable sports speeches. In addition to his "win one for the Gipper" speech, Rockne gave this memorable and motivational speech during his time coaching the Fighting Irish from 1918 to 1930.

During his time with the team, Rockne led Notre Dame to an incredible 105-12-5 record and five national championships.

"Well, boys, I haven't a thing to say. Played a great game ... all of you. Great game. I guess we just can't expect to win 'em all. I'm going to tell you something I've kept to myself for years. None of you ever knew George Gipp. It was long before your time. But you know what a tradition he is at Notre Dame. And the last thing he said to me, 'Rock,' he said, 'sometime, when the team is up against it, and the breaks are beating the boys, tell them to go out there with all they got and win just one for the Gipper. I don't know where I'll be then, Rock,' he said, 'but I'll know about it, and I'll be happy."

"And don't forget, men — today is the day we're gonna win. They can't lick us — and that's how it goes… The first platoon men — go in there and fight, fight, fight, fight, fight! What do you say, men!"

Jack Buck

On September 17, 2001, less than a week after the country was shook by the 9/11 terrorist attacks, St. Louis Cardinals broadcaster Jack Buck recited a heartfelt poem to the crowd at Busch Stadium in St. Louis, Missouri. Titled For America , Buck read the emotional poem to open the game, which was the first since the attacks.

Tim Thomas

Two years before he'd lead the Boston Bruins to the Stanley Cup Championship at the age of 37, National Hockey League goaltender Tim Thomas gave this motivational speech at the NHL Awards on June 18, 2009, while accepting the Vezina Trophy as the top goaltender in the league.

His rags to riches story was told in the emotional acceptance speech and remembered as one of the best sports speeches of all time.

"I never really allowed myself to believe that I might win because it seemed like such a faraway dream. When you look at the names on the Vezina Trophy, they're legends, and it's humbling to even be mentioned in the same sentence. I've been more worried about getting my name on a roster than I have been about winning the Vezina Trophy... Throughout my career, there were so many times when I got my hopes up and had them come crashing down behind me."

1. Who Do You Support?

image of a dugout with coaching staff

Marie: You’re a Villa fan, right?

Martin: Villa? No! Spurs. I’m Tottenham through and through.

Marie: Oh, really? I like Spurs. They’ve done well recently. They’ve been top four for the last few seasons, right?

Martin: Yeah, they’re always there or thereabouts, but it’d be nice to actually turn that into some trophies one day. We haven’t won anything major for a long time. Who do you support?

Marie: Newcastle. My Dad’s from there, and he took me to games when I was younger, so I’ve stuck with them. I’m not a fanatic, but I try to go to at least a couple of games a year, although it’s not much fun at the moment.

Martin: They’ve got a good side though, no?

Marie: Yeah, it’s not that. The owners won’t invest, so they’ve been underperforming for the last few years. It’s frustrating.

Martin: What do you think for this year? You think City will win it again?

Marie: Probably, though I think Liverpool have a shot, too. How do you think Spurs will do?

Martin: Well, I’d be happy enough with 4th, and very happy with 3rd. We need to be more consistent, though. Last year we dropped too many points in easy games. What about Newcastle?

Marie: Realistically, if we finish in the top half of the table it’ll be a good season. I just hope we don’t get relegated again…

Are you a football fan? Who do you support?

You could answer this by saying ‘I support …’, as in ‘I support Manchester United,’ or ‘I support Barcelona.’

Or, you could just give the club name.

In the English Premier League, club names are often shortened.

Look at five short names for Premier League clubs. Do you know which clubs they are?

Do you know? Here are the answers.

  • Aston Villa
  • Crystal Palace
  • Manchester City
  • Tottenham Hotspur
  • Wolverhampton Wanderers

If you say ‘City’ or ‘United’ when talking about English football, most people will understand ‘Manchester City’ and ‘Manchester United’. There are many clubs which have ‘City’ or ‘United’ in their name, but these are historically two of the biggest.

Anyway, what about your club? Look at three questions.

  • Are you a big fan?
  • Is your team good?
  • How do you think your team will do this/next season?

Think about how you could answer these questions. Before you do, let’s see some language from the dialogue which might help.

  • I’m Tottenham through and through.
  • I’m not a fanatic.
  • They’re always there or thereabouts.
  • They’ve been underperforming for the last few years.
  • We need to be more consistent.
  • I hope we don’t get relegated.

Look at the highlighted words and phrases. Do you remember how they were used? Could you explain what they mean?

‘Through and through’ means that you give 100% to your club. If you say ‘I’m Tottenham through and through’, you mean you are—and always have been—a big Tottenham fan.

A ‘fanatic’ in this context means a very enthusiastic fan. If you say ‘I’m not a fanatic’, you mean that you support your team, but maybe it’s not a big part of your life.

‘There or thereabouts’ means ‘near the top, but not the best’. If your team is there or thereabouts, you mean that they’re close to the top teams, but not one of the best in the country. Maybe you finish 3rd, 4th or 5th every year.

If your team underperforms, it gets worse results than you would expect. Maybe you have many great players, but you don’t win as often as you should.

Top teams need to be consistent . This means they play at a high level every week. The opposite is inconsistent. Inconsistent teams might play well one week, and badly the next.

Finally, if your team gets relegated, they finish in one of the bottom places in the league, and so they drop down to the league below. Getting relegated is one of the worst things that can happen to a team!

So now, what about your team? Look at the questions you saw before.

Think about how you could answer them. Maybe you could use some of the language you just saw. Pause the video, think about your answers, and practise saying them out loud.

OK? Could you do it? If it’s difficult, remember that you can go back and watch the dialogue and explanations again.

Next, imagine that you just watched an exciting match. How could you talk about it? Let’s see!

2. Talking About a Football Match

Football players on the field

Martin: Wow! What a game!

Marie: Yeah, real end-to-end stuff. 5-5? How often do you see a 10-goal draw?

Martin: I thought West Brom were out of it, but they kept coming back. To be 5-2 down against a team like United, and score three… They never stopped fighting.

Marie: On the one hand, it’s disappointing that we blew a three-goal lead, but it was such a great match that I can’t be too unhappy.

Martin: In the end, I think a draw was the right result. Obviously I’d have loved West Brom to win, but neither team deserved to lose.

Marie: True, though your lot were so bad in the first half. I don’t know what happened at half time, but you looked like a completely different side after the interval.

Martin: Yeah, I know what you mean. I think United sat back a bit too much in the second half, too. Maybe they thought they had won it in the first half.

Marie: Yeah, we didn’t look as sharp in the second half.

Here’s a question: what’s the best football match you can remember?

At the start of the dialogue, you heard the phrase ‘end-to-end stuff.’ You can use this to describe a match which was fast-moving and full of action.

Look at some more phrases from the dialogue, but with some words missing. Can you remember the missing words?

  • I thought West Brom were ________ it, but they kept ________.
  • It’s disappointing that we ________ a three-goal ________.
  • Your ________ were so bad in the first half.
  • I think United ________ a bit too much in the second half.
  • We didn’t look as _________ in the second half.

Remember that you can go back and listen to the dialogue again if you want. Are you ready? Let’s see the answers.

  • I thought West Brom were out of it, but they kept coming back .
  • It’s disappointing that we blew a three-goal lead .
  • Your lot were so bad in the first half.
  • I think United sat back a bit too much in the second half.

Can you explain what these phrases mean?

‘Out of it’ means that you don’t have a chance. If a team is three goals down, normally you can say they’re out of it, because most teams don’t win from that position.

You can also use ‘in’ with the opposite meaning. For example ‘They may be a goal down, but they’re still in the game.’

This means that even though they’re losing, they still have a chance to win.

If a team recovers from a losing position and gets a draw or a win, then they come back. ‘Come back’ can be a verb or a noun. Look at two examples.

  • They came back from two goals down to win the match.
  • They scored three goals in the last ten minutes to win. What a comeback!

‘Blow a three-goal lead’ means to lose a winning position. ‘We blew a three-goal lead’ means we were three goals ahead, but then the other team came back to win or draw. In general, if you say ‘you blew it’, it means ‘you failed’. It’s conversational.

‘Your lot’ means ‘the team you support.’ It’s also conversational, but it’s quite common among UK football fans.

If a team sits back, they don’t try to attack, and maybe they don’t give 100%. Sometimes, teams sit back when they’re already winning, because they don’t think they need more goals.

Another conversational expression which is popular recently is ‘park the bus’, which has a similar meaning. If a team parks the bus, they defend deep, and don’t move players forwards. Saying that a team parks the bus is usually a criticism, because it describes a style of play which is often boring to watch, even if it’s effective sometimes.

Finally, if your team looks sharp, they are playing well and moving fast. ‘Sharp’ means something like ‘focused’ or ‘dangerous’. You want your team to look sharp, especially if they have a big match, like a cup final.

Has your team ever played in a cup final, or won any trophies? Let’s see how you can talk about that next.

3. Talking About Trophies and Competitions

football player and trophy

Marie: Big night for you on Thursday, right?

Martin: The Europa Final? Yeah, I’m looking forward to it.

Marie: You think you’ll win?

Martin: Could do. I think both teams are quite evenly matched. In a knockout competition, you’ve always got a chance. We’ll see!

Marie: It’d be a big deal though, wouldn’t it? First European trophy?

Martin: Yeah, that’d be nice. Plus, it gets us into the Champions League next year. That would be a first, too.

Marie: Didn’t you win the FA cup a couple of years ago?

Martin: No, we got to the final, but then we lost in extra time. We haven’t won anything in recent years except the League Cup, and even that was five years ago.

Marie: I think I remember that match. Didn’t you win on penalties?

Martin: Yeah, it was a long shootout. It went to 10-9 or 9-8 or something crazy.

Marie: Well, a win’s a win!

Generally, football teams take part in two kinds of competition: leagues, like the Premier League, La Liga or Serie A, and cup competitions. Cup competitions can be domestic or international.

English football has two cup competitions: the League Cup and the FA Cup. The FA Cup is generally considered more prestigious. Other European leagues mostly have one domestic cup, but a few countries have two.

Then, you have international cups. In Europe, the most famous is the Champions League. The Europa League is the second-tier cup.

Cups are knockout competitions, meaning that in most cases, if you lose one match, you’re out. Some cups have a league phase, like the group stage of the Champions League, or the World Cup.

In a knockout match, what happens if it’s a draw? The match might go to extra time. If that doesn’t produce a result, then you have a penalty shootout.

Look at two sentences:

  • They won in extra time.
  • They won on penalties.

Notice that you win or lose in extra time, but on penalties.

Now, let’s practise! Look at three questions.

  • What’s the biggest football competition in your country or region?
  • Has your team ever got to a cup final? What happened?
  • If a big match, like a cup final, ends in a draw, is it better to have a penalty shootout, or have a replay? Why?

Can you answer these questions? Like before, pause the video and make your answers. Read them out loud, write them down, or do both!

Let’s look at one more thing: talking about players and transfers as we continue learning how to talk about football in English.

4. Talking About Players and Transfers

Playing football

Martin: You looking forward to the new season?

Marie: Yeah, of course, though I’m less optimistic than I could have been. We didn’t have much luck in the transfer window.

Martin: You still have a good team, though.

Marie: Sure, but we’ve lost some players. Kanté’s gone, Schwarzer’s gone, and I don’t think Riyad Mahrez will stay for long. Plus, with injuries, we needed at least one centre back, a holding midfielder, a winger, and probably more.

Martin: But you still have Vardy. He’s still a top striker.

Marie: Yeah, no doubt. He’s getting on, though. He might have one or two more good seasons in him, but we need to think about replacing him, too.

Martin: Well, count your blessings. We have a transfer ban, and our keeper’s injured, so we might not even have a recognised goalie for our first match.

Marie: You have so much depth in your squad, though. I think you’ll be OK.

Here’s a question: how many football positions can you name in English?

How many did you get?

In general, you have a goalkeeper, defenders, midfielders and forwards.

In each group, you have more specific words. For example, defenders can be centre-backs, left-backs, or right-backs, and there are other positions, too.

Midfielders can be classified by both where they play and their role. A ‘role’ can be defensive or attacking. For example, a holding midfielder is a defensive midfielder who plays in the centre. A winger is usually an attacking midfielder who plays on the left or right side. There are many other possible midfield positions, depending on the team’s tactics.

Forwards can be strikers, whose job is to score. Some teams might play a second forward behind the main striker, or wide forwards, who play on either side of the main striker.

What about your team? Who’s the best defender, midfielder and forward? Which players would you like to see in your team?

Let’s see some more phrases from the dialogue you can use to talk about players and transfers.

  • He’s a top striker.
  • He’s getting on.
  • We have a transfer ban.
  • You have so much depth in your squad.

Can you explain what these mean?

‘Top’ means ‘one of the best’.

‘Getting on’ means ‘getting older’. It’s conversational. Of course, getting older is relative here; footballers, especially forwards, often start getting slower after 30, and few are still playing at a high level after 35.

A transfer ban is when a club is not allowed to buy new players. If a club breaks the rules around transfers, they might get a transfer ban for a few months. Recently in the Premier League, Chelsea were given a 12-month transfer ban for breaking the rules on approaching players aged under 18.

Finally, sentence four means that the club has more than 11 good players. If your club has a deep squad, it means that injuries or losing one or two players won’t be a problem, because there are other good players to take over.

What about you? Who do you support, and who are your favourite players right now? Share your opinions in the comments!

speech on football

Speech on Football

To many people around the world, football is the game played with two teams of eleven, one round football and two goals. In America, football is a different game with two teams of 45 players, an oval ball and two sets of goalposts.

For the benefit of this speech, I refer to the game with the round ball as football. It is by far the most popular sport in the world with an estimated 4 billion fans. And ‘football’ is the name those fans mostly call the sport of the round ball. It is also sometimes referred to as soccer. The name soccer is said to have evolved from the slang term, ‘Sock it’ (kick it) which is still used in Britain today.

Football is a team sport, and one that is ubiquitous; it is entertaining to watch as well as to participate in the game. And like every other sport, football has had its own share of controversies over the years and it is also one home to some of the richest sporting clubs in the world. Today, football has a high standard of play at professional levels, which are governed by FIFA, a regulating body that regulates the sport, at all levels. However, there would be no professional level of football if it were not for the love of and participation in the amateur game.

Speech on football

The modern history of the world’s favorite game spans more than 100 years. It started in 1863 in England, when rugby football and association football split, following different courses, and the Football Association in England was formed as the sport’s first governing body. However, forms of football can be traced back to 5 th century BC. People have enjoyed kicking inflated leather skin balls around for thousands of years. This game playing can be traced back to nations such as China, South America, Japan, and other nations.

This game evolved over the years resulting in more rules being formulated, with universal agreement. Finally, a league was formed where general rules and regulations were debated, argued before finally being adopted. While Football, as we know it today, is quite different from its early variants, with structured game formats, referees, specified schedules whereas most of the early variants had little or no rules. Even today some rules are continuously changing. Technology such as VAR has crept into the game. It allows replays to be shown to the referee so he or she may make a second opinion on important decisions.

Naturally, as with the most popular sport, football is not immune to violence and passions can run high as fans follow their local teams. There is often a minority who will resort to violence, and bad language. While it can be hard to equate violence with any sport, the fact remains that fans tend to view sports as a way to challenge others for superiority and sometimes a minority of the losing side will often feel aggrieved enough to start attacking others. Well, that seems to be one of the reasons why a few football matches end in riots, with most of them indulging in physical violence, wanton acts of damage, and even arson.

Some of the riots in the UK can be linked back to a football game where the audience needing a way to vent their frustration, and disappointment often decided to indulge in acts of arson and looting. But then again, this is one of the few games that have a massive following, with several hundred football clubs, spread across many nations. So to say that FIFA is a rich organization would be an understatement. But then again, FIFA is in charge of running the show, from organizing football matches between various clubs, countries as well as organizing the world cup. Hosting a professional football game can be an expensive affair – when you take into account the fact that the grounds have to be strictly maintained, with transportation and various other facilities being made available for the audience. To put it in perspective, Brazil had to spend nearly 15 billion USD for hosting the world cup. That’s something to think about right? At the least, it should make it apparent to us all that football games are bound to become more popular than ever before.

Racism and toxic social media in football

English football is consumed by racism and hatred. Can the cycle be broken?

Wave of abuse directed at players on social media is part of a deep societal crisis but perhaps football can provide a solution

F our decades ago, before his England debut, Cyrille Regis was sent a bullet in the post by a racist fan. In 2008, shortly after being appointed as Chelsea’s manager, Avram Grant was deluged with dozens of antisemitic emails. These days, as footballers continue to be subjected to racist abuse on Twitter and Instagram, the temptation is to wonder whether anything has changed except the method of delivery.

The recent wave of social media abuse – directed primarily at prominent black footballers – follows a well-worn pattern. The incidents begin to cluster with a grisly momentum: Marcus Rashford , Axel Tuanzebe on two separate occasions, Anthony Martial , Reece James , Romaine Sawyers , Alex Jankewitz and Lauren James . Statements are issued. Governing bodies, broadcasters and public figures clamber over each other to offer their condemnation, often by way of a fancy social media graphic. And then, like any wave, the anger subsides. The news cycle gets bored. Racism carries on, and so does everyone else. Until the next wave, at least.

As Rashford put it last week: “Only time will tell if the situation improves. But it’s not improved over the last few years.”

Marcus Rashford and Paul Pogba take a knee.

Can the cycle ever be broken? Will football ever be able to move beyond strong statements and outright condemnations and the occasional glimpse of a man walking out of a magistrate’s court with a jacket over his head? Players and senior figures within the game have urged greater vigilance from social media platforms . The government has threatened tech companies with criminal sanctions and fines running into the billions. But for now, all of this remains just words. Realistically, are we ever going to get the measure of this thing?

This isn’t just about racism, as demonstrated by the death threats sent to referee Mike Dean over the weekend, or the recent treatment of the pundit Karen Carney by Leeds fans. Nor is it about single incidents, or even overt abuse. Focusing on social media platforms is to address only the thinnest sliver of the problem, given that much of the abuse currently being dished out has simply migrated online in the absence of fans from stadiums. For all the joy it inspires, the stirring stories it serves up, English football feels more thoroughly consumed by hatred than at any point in its recent history: a smell you can neither accurately place nor decisively ignore.

It’s in the increasing rancour and tetchiness of online discourse. It’s the climate in which virtually any act can be infinitely parsed and debated along pre-existing lines of difference. It’s the subtle difference between a newspaper reporting the news and a newspaper social media account baiting its followers with wild, tendentious headlines. It’s the difference between singing about Arsène Wenger getting sacked and Ed Woodward dying. And whether you like it or not, we’re all tangled up in it. Last season Haringey Borough in north London were the victims of racist abuse from Yeovil Town fans during an FA Cup qualifying game. Their goalkeeper Valery Pajetat was spat at, pelted with stones and called a “black cunt”. After the game was stopped for several minutes, manager Tom Loizou decided that there was only one course of action. “My players were getting racially abused,” he says now. “The referee had no control. So I decided to take them off. The FA Cup don’t mean that much to me. I said to the Yeovil manager: ‘Good luck in the next round.’”

As ever with these things, the initial media interest quickly disappeared. The world of football tutted, frowned and returned to its business. For Haringey, meanwhile, the healing process has taken a good deal longer. The additional security measures required for the replay left them several thousand pounds out of pocket. The emotional scars, meanwhile, have been worse. “The club’s been in decline ever since,” Loizou says. “My goalkeeper didn’t want to play any more. Coby Rowe, the best centre-half I’ve ever had at this club, had to move on. The players are still struggling. What do you say? It’s a one-off? It won’t happen again?”

Valery Pajetat of Haringey Borough during the FA Cup match against Yeovil Town

This isn’t Haringey’s first brush with racism. At an FA Trophy game, Loizou claims that a player’s pregnant girlfriend was followed to the car park by an opposition fan and taunted with the words: “You black slag, you and that fucking baby inside you.” And like many within the game, Loizou senses on some level that things are getting worse. “I used to play in the local leagues around here,” he says. “There was Greeks, blacks, Turkish, and no racial abuse at all. Now, all I see is hatred all around me, all the time. The country is rife with it.”

Tom Loizou, manager of Haringey Borough FC.

Last season, 287 of the 2,663 football fixtures played in England and Wales – more than 10% – featured at least one incident of hate crime, according to the Home Office . Arrests for racist or indecent chanting rose by 150%, even though fans stopped attending matches in March. And yet to focus on a few headline figures is to ignore the broader trend: a slow and gradual raising of the temperature, a hardening of minds and a coarsening of conversation. What used to be considered beyond the pale is no longer, because we have lost any ability to decide collectively what the pale even is.

The sociologist Dr Jamie Cleland has been studying the discourse of football and football fans for more than a decade, and agrees that the window has shifted. “What we’re seeing,” he says, “is a ‘casualisation’ of language. Society has become a lot busier, and so social norms aren’t being challenged as they would have been historically. People are getting away with things that they wouldn’t have a generation previously.”

There are clear parallels here between the rise of online abuse towards footballers and the highly gendered hooliganism of the 1970s and 1980s, a process that Cleland describes as “capital acquisition”. “This was the notorious aspect of hooliganism: people engaged in violent behaviour because it gave them a form of social or cultural capital,” he says. “Through the generations, football has historically turned boys into men. Whereas once they proved themselves by engaging in violence, now it’s about proving their worth online as a fan. That person might not have a high level of capital in their everyday life. But this gives them a sense of worthiness. They want someone to bite. They feel alive.”

The natural rejoinder is that, now as ever, the actions of a vocal and vicious minority should not taint the standing of the majority. But this defence only really works to a point, and in any case: who or what is really being defended here? You do not have to physically tweet racist abuse or sing antisemitic songs in order to be complicit in a culture that enables these actions. “We keep talking about a minority,” says Loizou. “But they’re in amongst the majority. And if the majority are doing nothing about it, then they’re just as guilty.”

Much of the debate has focused upon pressuring social media platforms to more proactively police hate speech, even if it’s not entirely clear how this would work in practice. Blocking racist words or accounts only deals with the problem at the most basic level. Removing user anonymity would have a disastrous effect on repressed groups living under autocratic regimes (for example, LGBT people in the United Arab Emirates), and does nothing about the many users perfectly content to churn out racism under their own name.

To a large extent, the problem is one of data and intelligence. We may think we have an idea in our head of who the archetypal racist fan might be. But we still don’t know for sure, even though the technology to profile and proactively target problem users has long existed in other sectors. “We don’t have a taxonomy of offenders,” says Sanjay Bhandari, the chair of Kick it Out. “We’re aware that there are kids doing this because they’re bored. There are people who don’t know better. People who have extremist views, people who want to put off opponents, people from outside the UK who think they’re not going to be caught. For all we know, some of it might be automated bots. What we don’t know is the volume of each category.”

Naturally, big social media companies are highly resistant to the idea of giving up their precious user data, and often hide behind prepared statements rather than submit themselves to interviews or scrutiny. Often that approach strays into outright defiance: last July one police force investigating online abuse contacted Twitter to ask for details about a particular racist post. They finally received a reply in January, almost six months later.

Let’s Kick Racism Out of Football artwork inside Birmingham City’s St Andrew’s ground.

Bhandari advocates a two-pronged strategy: pressure on the tech giants, allied with lobbying for changes in the law. “If you look at something like hacking,” he explains, “we know who’s doing it. For years, the banking industry has had a common registry of offending IP addresses for anti-money-laundering purposes. These systems exist. But you need the help of Twitter and Facebook, because they’ve got all the data. Unless you understand the problem, all we’re doing is playing whack-a-mole.”

Dr Mark Doidge is a senior research fellow at the University of Brighton who specialises in football fan culture. He reckons football fans are often an easy scapegoat for far broader social problems. “Historically, football fans have been demonised,” he says. “They’re invariably seen as violent or racist. Whereas in reality, football fans come from all walks of life. And it’s a very convenient excuse to blame things on football fans that are happening at a wider level.

“There is a particular aspect of football culture around the world which is about: we are this, you are that. It’s about superiority, masculine hierarchy. And that structures a lot of interactions between fans. However, this coarsening of debate comes from the top. The prime minister has made openly sexist, homophobic and racist comments. So you have a society that is more comfortable speaking about these things.”

Cleland describes this as “internalised disposition” – behaviours we learn by watching others. If we see politicians rise to power despite making openly racist or sexist comments, if the restraining influence of peers and social groups is devalued to the point of irrelevance, if we see the most obnoxious and attention-seeking online behaviour rewarded with likes and followers, it follows that these traits will filter into everyday currency.

And so, if these forces go as deep as humanity itself, how on earth do we begin to resist them? “I’ve seen people argue education is important,” says Cleland. “But in many ways, we’re past that stage. The problem is so deep. The fluidity is getting out of control. It’s probably impossible, but society needs to shake itself down, reassess the ways in which we deal with each other.”

For Doidge, meanwhile, the solution lies at source: with supporters themselves. “Over the last 30 years, football fans have shown that they can work together when they recognise there’s a bigger issue,” he says. “The clubs have a huge role to play, but the best way of getting fans to do something is to propose it from within the fanbase. Not Uefa, not the police, but your friends.” And when Ian Wright published screenshots of racist abuse he had received last year, Instagram users identified the culprit within minutes. On Thursday an Irish teenager called Patrick O’Brien was sentenced to probation for the attack, although to widespread dismay O’Brien escaped a criminal conviction .

Patrick O’Brien walks from Tralee district court.

And so really this is a problem that goes well beyond football. It encompasses the criminal justice system, the hegemony of Big Tech, the dereliction of our politics and the way we talk to each other. The solutions, too, must be equally wide-ranging: from the banning order and the boycott to the block button and the coordinated political campaign. On some level it feels like a hopeless crusade: like trying to hold back the world with just your two bare hands.

Yet perhaps there are still grounds for optimism. Football has so often acted as a petri dish for wider social trends: the same toxic combination of fierce tribalism and crowd anonymity that now feels so endemic to our lives as a whole. You can look at this in one of two ways. Either we complain that the task is too monstrous, the forces of chaos too irresistible, and draw the curtains. Or we conclude that if football is a microcosm of society, then by fixing the part we can start to fix the whole. Football may not be the root cause of all its problems. But perhaps it can be the root of the solution.

90 minutes of sweat.. 90 minutes of pain…

All the hard work, all the sacrifices you have made,
it all comes down to these 90 minutes.

When you step on that field, you’re spending 90 minutes. 90 minutes that will never come back.

These 90 minutes can determine your future, they can change your whole life if you use them correctly.

During this limited time you must work harder than the rest.

You must do your best, no matter what the scoreboard says. You must give your all, no matter what ANYONE says.

This sport is unpredictable, at one moment it feels like you’re losing… and in the next you might be winning.

Everyone wants to win, but one thing is for sure. When you’re walking down that tunnel, when you step on the field – KNOW in your heart there will only be ONE winner.

There will only be ONE WINNER because you will NOT accept anything else.

GO FOR THE WIN OR GO HOME!

I’m not here to participate , I’m here to win and win ONLY

I didn’t come this far to see the other team lift the trophy! I didn’t come this far to see the other team win!

NO ONE remembers the one who finished second, NO ONE remembers the one who received the silver medal!

The person who puts in the most hours on the training ground, the person who wants it the most is the one who will win! This sport requires a strong body but even a stronger mindset. If you’re not prepared mentally you will never be ready physically.

You have to program your mind into victory.

This game is all about how bad you want it, it’s about grit. It’s about HEART. The difference between winning and losing is how far you’re willing to go!

Your HUNGER will be tested on the field. Your DESIRE to win, will determine the outcome of the game.

We keep on fighting even if the odds are stacked against us.

They don’t know that we have the heart, the courage and the will to make things happen!

We will destroy everything that comes in our way, BECAUSE WE WERE BORN TO WIN, WE WERE BORN TO DOMINATE!

We might be the underdogs, we might be the “weaker” team.

But one thing is for sure: When we step on the field we FIGHT. We fight for ourselves and WE FIGHT for each other!

YOU WILL NEVER PLAY THIS EXACT GAME AGAIN IN YOUR LIFE!!

YOU WILL NEVER HAVE THE SAME OPPORTUNITY TODAY IN YOUR LIFE!

WHEN YOU GO OUT ON THE FIELD, YOU GO OUT TO WIN, YOU GO ALL IN!

YOU KEEP PUSHING YOURSELF TO YOUR LIMITS, YOU KEEP ON PUSHING WHEN EVERYONE HAS HAD ENOUGH!

IT DOESN’T MATTER HOW MUCH THE SCORE IS, WE NEVER QUIT, WE NEVER GIVE UP!

A champion is someone who keeps going even if everything seems impossible!

Not everyone becomes a champion but I know that you got it within you.

The next time you got 90 minutes, how are you going to perform?

It’s now or never, show the world WHO …. YOU … ARE.

It all comes down to the 90 minutes…

2 Minute Speech On Football In English

Good morning everyone present here, today I am going to give a speech on football. Millions of people worldwide like and play the game of football. Because it is played in every country, large and little, it can be said to as a worldwide game. It’s also a fantastic way to unwind, release stress, and promote self-control and cooperation. In addition, it keeps the body and minds healthy and fit. It’s a team game, which makes it more fun because it instills in players the value of sportsmanship, unification, and leadership.

Looking back a few years, we can claim that all but West Bengal did not consider football to be a popular sport. Indians are not particularly interested in playing football, either. Similar to the All India Football Federation (AIFF), the government only provides limited funding and support. But the situation has entirely changed at this point. Football currently competes on par with cricket in the nation. In addition, the nation hosts numerous football competitions every year.

Most importantly, due to football’s lack of popularity, few people are aware that we also have an under-17 and under-23 football team.

Football’s biggest competition is the FIFA World Cup, which takes place every four years. In addition to that, there are other additional competitions, including the UEFA Cup, Asian Cup (AFC), African Championships (CAF), and many others. Since football is a worldwide game, it can be a tool for promoting peace throughout the world. Thank you.

San francisco 49ers | more potential jurors dismissed as trump’s hush money trial conducts 1st full day of jury selection, san francisco 49ers, san francisco 49ers | 49ers’ historically bad trade for o.j. simpson was mere blip in his complex life, o.j. simpson was a san francisco native who ended his nfl career with the 1978-79 49ers before more captivating, controversial chapters in his life.

While O.J. Simpson’s life produced one of the most dramatic falls from grace in American history, his football career was something to behold, too, up until a disappointing homecoming with the San Francisco 49ers in the late 1970s.

His two seasons with the 49ers, in retrospect, are a mere blip in a polarizing life that had far more captivating chapters: charismatic actor, successful broadcaster, rental-car pitchman, and, for the past 30 years, suspected double-murderer, though a jury acquitted him of the 1994 slayings of his ex-wife, Nicole Brown Simpson, and her friend Ronald Goldman.

Simpson’s death was announced Thursday by his family , stating he passed away a day earlier from prostate cancer. He was 76.

Just two months ago, Orenthal James Simpson harkened back to his San Francisco roots. He sat poolside in a Las Vegas backyard, donned a 49ers’ jersey, and predicted – wrongfully — they would beat the Kansas City Chiefs later that day in Super Bowl LVIII. It was his final video posted on his Twitter/X account, captioned: “I’m from the Bay and I’m going with the Bay!!! Let’s go @49ers.”

I’m from the Bay and I’m going with Bay!!! Lets go @49ers pic.twitter.com/MoO9TELc8B — O.J. Simpson (@TheRealOJ32) February 11, 2024

For as much can be said about his life off the football field, the Bay Area gridiron is, indeed, where he made his initial mark, starting at Galileo High School and City College of San Francisco. “It was on those school yards and in those playgrounds that I was taught the principles of fair play and good sportsmanship,” Simpson said in his Pro Football Hall of Fame enshrinement speech.

After winning the 1968 Heisman Trophy at USC, Simpson embarked on an 11-year NFL career that earned him a spot in the Pro Football Hall of Fame’s Class of 1985. It was his 1969-77 tenure with the Buffalo Bills saw him become the 1973 NFL MVP and a five-time All-Pro, six-time Pro Bowler, and, four-time NFL rushing champion, including the first 2,000-yard season in 1973.

Those accolades, however, also enticed the 49ers to make one of the worst trades in franchise history. Instead of a triumphant homecoming, Simpson’s battle-worn knees did not cooperate as he suited up for the 1978-79 49ers amid a transition that Bill Walsh would eventually flip into a Super Bowl-winning dynasty the following decade.

To get Simpson, however, then-49ers general manager Joe Thomas traded a high-end package of draft picks to the Buffalo Bills: 1978 second- and third-round picks; 1979 first-, second- and fourth-round choices. After 2,123 carries for 10,183 yards in nine seasons with the Bills, Simpson ran for just four touchdowns and 1,053 yards (281 carries) with the 49ers, who went 2-14 in both 1978 and ’79.

When Joe Montana arrived as a rookie quarterback on that 1979 team, he appreciated Simpson’s support and playful vibe, even though the running back’s decline was painfully evident. Consider these excerpts from Montana’s 1986 book “Audibles,” which he co-authored with Bob Raissman:

“It was really tough for me, and for everyone on the 49ers, to watch O.J. at the end of his career. He had always been someone I admired, through high school and college. It was really strange thinking that we were on the same team. It was like a dream.

“… During the ’79 season, O.J.’s knee were in terrible shape. His insticts were there. I could see it in games. All the moves were there. They were just a split second too late. Sometimes I would think how terrible I might feel knowing my mind could play the game but my body wouldn’t let me. When the backs, quartertbacks and receivers gather to watch the film of a game, it’s always a time for kidding and making fun of everybody else’s mistakes. No one is immune from the kidding. But one afternoon we were watching film and O.J., in this particular game, had been caught from a player who was a bout a half-step behind him. “Gentlemen,” O.J. said, “I wasn’t thinking about him. My instincts were still back in the seventies. In my own mind, I was by the guy, my mind told me that I could blow right past him. Look at the film; no one beats Father Time.”

Montana countered those deep thoughts by recalling how Simpson and teammate Al Cowlings helped liven up the locker room, even amid an 0-7 start to that 1979 season. (Cowlings would also become famous for driving Simpson in a notorious, low-speed police chase through Los Angeles after the 1994 murders of Simpson’s ex-wife and her friend.)

“O.J. never really ran faster than that Bronco could go, either,” former 49ers center Randy Cross quipped in a 2016 interview with this news organization.

Simpson’s farewell game saw him rush for 12 yards on two carries in a Dec. 16, 1979 loss at Atlanta. That was preceded by “O.J. Day” marking his San Francisco exit at Candlestick Park. In Simpson’s Pro Football Hall of Fame enshrinement speech, he thanks 49ers owner Eddie DeBartolo and Walsh for allowing him to play his final season with Cowings in their hometown.

Added Montana in his Audibles book: “O.J. had the ability to make people relax. He kidded everyone and they seemed to enjoy it. He is the kind of guy who also could be kidded. In fact, I think he got a lot of his material from pranks and jokes that had been played on him.”

Simpson’s body was too broken down for him to make an on-field impact for the hapless 49ers in 1978-79. His home debut featured his only 100-yard game (108 yards in a 16-13 loss to the Chicago Bears at Candlestick Park). He didn’t score in his final eight games in 1979.

Where his trade ranks in 49ers’ lore is up for debate, but it’s certainly among the dreadful deals that brought them quarterbacks Jim Plunkett in 1976 from the Patriots (for two 1976 first-round picks, plus 1977 first- and second-round picks) and Trey Lance (three first-round picks plus a third-round choice to the Miami Dolphins in a March 2021 trade).

His 49ers’ farewell did not block Simpson from becoming a first-ballot Hall of Famer.

“O.J. Simpson was the first player to reach a rushing mark many thought could not be attained in a 14-game season when he topped 2,000 yards,” said Jim Porter, president of the Pro Football Hall of Fame. “His on-field contributions will be preserved in the Hall’s archives in Canton, Ohio.”

Those 2,003 yards for the 1973 Bills included 200 on 34 carries in the season finale, thus breaking Jim Brown’s record (1,863 yards) that stood for a decade.

That also fulfilled a vow Simpson once made as a kid to Brown when they crossed paths in a donut shop after a Browns-49ers game at Kezar Stadium. “Hey, man, Jim Brown, someday I’m gonna break all your records,” a young Simpson told Brown, according to long-time 49ers photographer Michael Zagaris, who witnessed that exchange and wrote about it in his book “Field of Play,” which includes phenomenal pictures of Simpson from his brief 49ers career.

On Jan. 28, Simpson posted a Twitter/X video ahead of the 49ers-Lions faceoff in the NFC Championship Game — a rematch of their 1957 playoff game the Lions won at Kezar Stadium. Said Simpson: “It was 66 years ago, 1957, I attended my very first professional football game. That game was the 49ers vs. the Lions in what was a playoff game. I attended the game, I was not quite 10 years old at the time. It was a hell of a game. The 49ers were way ahead at halftime. The rumors were the 49ers opened the champagne bottyles at halftime, but as the second half rolled around, Detroit got hot and ended up winning that game. … Here we are again with the 49ers playing the Lions in a playoff game. Boy, it’s been quite a while. I’m excited.”

Back in those childhood days in Potrero HIll, Simpson was taught a lesson when he, Cowlings and others were caught by a coach ditching a class their sophomore year at Galileo. “I’ll never forget (junior varsity football coach) Jack McBride because he told me, he said, ‘O.J., in this world there are rules that we all must live by.’ He said, ‘You’ve gotta learn that if you’re ever going to be successful in this world, you are going to have to learn to accept the responsibilities for your actions.’

“And, I don’t know, it didn’t hit me right then,” Simpson continued in his speech, “but it started to grow on me as years went on because I knew I was this guy’s favorite and he turned me in, he would have turned me in anyway. And I guess that is when I began to realize that it really, really is secondary if you win or lose. It’s how you play the game in life and on the field that really matters.”

Speech on My Favourite Sport Soccer

Soccer is more than just a game, it’s a celebration of skill, teamwork, and strategy. It’s my favorite sport, offering a thrilling experience like no other.

You might share this passion, finding joy in the swift moves, strategic play, and the sheer excitement each match brings. Soccer is a world in itself, filled with endless fascination.

1-minute Speech on My Favourite Sport Soccer

Ladies and Gentlemen, Boys and Girls,

Today, I want to talk to you about my favourite sport, soccer. Soccer, also known as football in many parts of the world, is a game that brings joy, excitement and unity. It’s a sport where two teams, each with eleven players, compete to get a ball into the other team’s goal. The team with the most goals wins!

One of the reasons I love soccer is its simplicity. All you need is a ball and an open space, and you’re ready to play. No fancy equipment, no expensive gear. This makes soccer a game for everyone, rich or poor, young or old. It’s a sport that truly unites us all.

Soccer also teaches us valuable lessons. It’s not just about scoring goals, but also about teamwork and cooperation. You can’t win a soccer match alone. You need your teammates to pass the ball, defend the goal, and support each other. This teaches us the importance of working together, just like in real life.

Finally, soccer is a global sport. It’s played and loved all around the world. Be it the World Cup or a local match in a small village, soccer brings people together. It creates a sense of community and shared passion that few other things can.

In conclusion, soccer is a simple, inclusive, and global sport that teaches us about teamwork and unity. It’s more than just a game; it’s a way of life. That’s why soccer is my favourite sport. I hope you, too, will give it a try and experience the joy it brings. Thank you!

2-minute Speech on My Favourite Sport Soccer

Ladies and gentlemen, boys and girls, I’m here to speak to you about my favourite sport, soccer. Soccer, also known as football in many parts of the world, is a game that brings people together, regardless of age, gender, or nationality. It’s a sport that teaches us about teamwork, perseverance, and the joy of play.

Firstly, let’s talk about the thrill of the game. Soccer is a simple game at its core. All you need is a ball, two goals, and a group of players. But within this simplicity lies the magic. Every match is a new story, filled with suspense, drama, and unexpected turns. Whether it’s a last-minute goal, a brilliant save by the goalkeeper, or a clever strategy by the coach, soccer keeps us on the edge of our seats.

Secondly, soccer is the ultimate team sport. It’s not just about one star player; it’s about how well the team works together. Each player has a role to play, from the defenders protecting their goal, the midfielders controlling the game, to the forwards scoring the goals. Soccer teaches us that success is not just about individual brilliance, but about cooperation and teamwork.

Next, let’s talk about the life lessons soccer teaches us. Soccer is a game of ups and downs. There are moments of victory, and there are moments of defeat. But no matter what, the game goes on. Soccer teaches us to be resilient, to keep trying even when things get tough. It teaches us that failure is not the end, but a chance to learn and improve.

Moreover, soccer is a global game. It’s played in every corner of the world, from the busy streets of Brazil to the quiet fields of rural Africa. Soccer unites us. It shows us that despite our differences, we can come together to celebrate the beautiful game. Whether you’re cheering for your local team or the national squad in the World Cup, soccer brings us together in a shared passion.

Lastly, let’s not forget the sheer joy of playing soccer. The feeling of the ball at your feet, the exhilaration of scoring a goal, the camaraderie with your teammates – these are experiences that bring happiness and create lifelong memories. Soccer is not just a sport, but a source of joy and fun.

In conclusion, soccer is my favourite sport because it’s more than just a game. It’s a thrilling spectacle, a lesson in teamwork and resilience, a unifying force, and a source of joy. Whether you’re a player on the field or a fan in the stands, soccer has something to offer for everyone. So, let’s celebrate this beautiful game and all the wonderful things it brings to our lives. Thank you.

Biden skewered for falsely claiming to be the first in his family to go to college: 'Pathological liar'

Social media users called out President Biden for claiming to be the first in his family to go to college in a recent speech.

Biden made the claim while giving a speech in Wisconsin on Monday that touted his latest student loan handout . While on the topic of debt and college, Biden said, "I, like an awful lot of people in this audience, was the first in my family to go to college, and watch my dad struggle to help me get there."

However, observant users, like digital strategist and conservative influencer Greg Price, did not let Biden’s innocuous-seeming statement go unscrutinized.

BIDEN BRAGS SUPREME COURT 'DIDN'T STOP' HIM FROM CANCELING STUDENT LOANS: HE'S 'HAPPY TO BREAK THE LAW'

In an X post, Price shared a clip from a presidential speech two years prior in which Biden bragged that his grandfather played college football, a claim at odds with his recent bit about being the "first" to go to university.

Price’s post stated, "Joe Biden just said in a speech in Wisconsin ‘I, like an awful lot of people in this audience, was the first in my family to go to college.’ That is a lie. One of the reasons we know it's a lie is because Biden has bragged several times in the past about how his grandfather played college football."

He described the other clip, stating, "The video on the right is a speech from October 2022." In it, Biden declared that his grandfather would "really be proud of me right now. I’m not joking, he would. By the way, he was an All-American football player ."

Price subsequently shared a post from the RNC Research X account pointing out how The New York Times caught Biden making the same two contrary claims in 1987. The account shared a blurb from the article scrutinizing Biden’s plagiarism that he was criticized for in his first run for president that year.

The nearly 40-year-old article stated , "Mr. Biden had said he was the ‘first in his family ever to go to university.’ In fact, Mr. Biden said today, ‘there are Finnegans, my mother’s family, that went to college.’"

National Review senior writer Dan McLaughlin also backed up the point, stating, "It's not just a lie, it's a lie he was publicly caught telling 37 years ago."

The Federalist editor-in-chief Mollie Hemingway commented on Price’s post, making the same point that RNC Research did. She wrote, "Also, this was one of the lies that forced Biden out of his first presidential campaign back in the 1980s. Absolutely pathological."

Chaya Raichick, the woman behind the "Libs of TikTok" account, commented, "This dude is a pathological liar on top of being senile."

BIDEN ‘CANCELS’ NEARLY $6B IN STUDENT LOANS FOR PUBLIC SECTOR WORKERS

Former Republican Arkansas governor Mike Huckabee appeared exasperated with how Biden gets away with these apparently irreconcilable statements, saying, "But will anyone in the media call him out for it? Nope. They give his shoes a tongue bath every day and seem to enjoy it."

Conservative influencer duo "Chicks on The Right" noted, "How anyone believes Biden about anything ever is a complete mystery."

Author and Washington Times columnist Tim Murtaugh remarked, "It’s sad that it has to be pointed out that Biden cannot be the first in his family to attend college, while also having a grandfather who played college football."

Fox News Digital reached out to the White House for comment.

The executor of OJ Simpson’s estate on Monday reversed course on his pledge last week to do “everything in my capacity” to prevent the families of the former football star’s ex-wife Nicole Brown and her friend Ron Goldman from receiving a $33.5 million payout.

Attorney Malcolm LaVergne said he wanted to walk back comments that he made last week, in which he expressed hope that “the Goldmans get zero, nothing,” and vowed that he would do “everything in my capacity as the executor or personal representative to try and ensure that they get nothing.”

“I can tell you in advance, Fred Goldman’s claim will be accepted. And his claim will be handled in accordance with Nevada law,” LaVergne  told the Hollywood Reporter.

He went on to say that his comments last week in an interview with the Las Vegas Review-Journal were not directed at Fred Goldman, but instead at the attorneys who are representing him.

“Within an hour of knowing that OJ died, he started talking s–t,” LaVergne said of Goldman’s lawyer. “My advocate instinct, [it] was, ‘Oh, you’re gonna keep s–tting on him even after he’s dead? Fine, you know? You get nothing.’

“And so those were my remarks then. But I backtracked and they were pretty harsh remarks. And now I’m going in the other direction.”
