T-Mobile is the nation’s third-largest cellphone provider. They also happen to offer the best military discount on cellphone plans . The T-Mobile military discount is available to both current and former military members, as well as to their family members when the additional phones are included on the military member or veteran’s plan.

Perhaps the best part about the T-Mobile military discount is that it applies a 20% discount to their signature plan, the T-Mobile Magenta plan, which features unlimited talk, text and data; unlimited in Mexico and Canada; works in many overseas locations and includes a monthly Netflix subscription . To top it off, the savings are greater when you add more phones (half off the next five lines, compared to standard pricing).

Let’s take a look at the T-Mobile military discount, including features, cost and eligibility.

T-Mobile Military Discount on the Magenta Military and Magenta MAX Plans

The T-Mobile military plan is really a discount on the T-Mobile Magenta and Magenta MAX plans, which are their signature and premium monthly plans.

Here is what you will get with the T-Mobile Magenta military plan at $55 per month:

Here is what you will get with the T-Mobile Magenta MAX military plan at $70 per month:

• Unlimited talk, text and data with speeds that don’t slow based on usage
• Up to 4K UHD streaming
• 40 GB of 4G LTE mobile hotspot data
• 2x data speed and texting abroad
• Free Netflix standard – One screen with one qualifying military line in good standing, and two screens while you maintain two or more lines.
• Unlimited in-flight Wi-Fi
• Control your calls and voicemails

T-Mobile Military Discount Eligibility

The T-Mobile website states the military discount is available to all active-duty service members, veterans, retired military personnel, members of the Army Reserve or National Guard and Gold Star families. The discount also will be available to veteran-owned businesses.

There are a couple of notes regarding eligibility:

• The military member or veteran must be the primary account holder and the account must maintain a valid military line.
• T-Mobile for business customers are eligible for up to 12 lines; however, government accounts are not eligible.
• No-credit-check and prepaid customers are not eligible.

You will need to provide proof of military service within 45 days of opening your new T-Mobile account or otherwise applying for the military discount.

Your plan will revert to the T-Mobile Magenta plan at an additional cost of up to $20 per line per month if you are unable to or fail to provide your proof of military service .

How does T-Mobile verify military status or military service?

The T-Mobile website states they will accept any document proving the customer is serving or has served in the military. The form must include the veteran’s first and last name, valid dates of service and/or status (e.g., active duty or a veteran with an honorable discharge).

T-Mobile will accept numerous forms of verification, but the most common documents are DD214 , leave and earnings statement and military orders.

What do I do if my military status changes?

This offer is open to current and former military members, so you will not need to contact T-Mobile. Your eligibility will remain intact and you will not need to change your plan. T-Mobile Magenta Military is available to all military, veterans, National Guard, Reserve and Gold Star family members.

T-Mobile Military Pricing

The most important thing to know about this military discount is that it is a permanent discount. This is not a promotional discount. Of course, things are subject to change. So it never hurts to take advantage of great offers when they pop up.

The T-Mobile Military Discount is on the T-Mobile Magenta Military plan and the Magenta Plus military plan. Here are the current rates (and remember, unlike most cellphone carriers, T-Mobile plans include all taxes and fees).

Here are current rates for the T-Mobile Magenta military plan with AutoPay enabled (lines cost $5 more per month if you do not enable AutoPay):

• Line 1 – $55 (20% off standard pricing)
• Line 2 – $40 per line (50% off standard pricing)
• Line 3 – $30 per line
• Line 4 – $25 per line
• Line 5 – $22 per line

Again, the price you see is the price you pay. All taxes and fees are included.

T-Mobile May Even Pay off Your Current Phone or Early Termination Fees

T-Mobile is doing their best to grow their customer base, and they don’t want something like a cellphone contract to get in the way of adding customers. So they are willing to pay your early termination fees if you need to break your contract to change carriers.

Keep your phone, and they’ll help pay off your current service contracts – up to $650 per line.

As you can imagine, this is a limited-time offer, and there are some terms and conditions, which you can find on their website .

How Much Can T-Mobile Save You?

T-Mobile claims their current military discount can save a family of four $764 compared to Verizon’s military discount program and $665 compared to AT&T’s military discount. Of course, your savings will vary based on your current cellphone plan and the number of lines you add.

As with all offers, it’s a good idea to run the numbers to see which carrier is the best for your needs.

For my current situation, my wife and I would pay a comparable amount per month for the cellphone line (actually $5 per month cheaper with T-Mobile), but we also subscribe to Netflix and pay that out of pocket. So we save an additional $13.99 per month on the Netflix subscription.

$19 per month works out to $228 per year, which is a decent savings.

We could possibly save more than that, because I pay $10 a month on a mobile hotspot through T-Mobile. Under the T-Mobile military discount, you can use your phones as hotspots. So I may be able to save around $348 per year.

Now we’re talking real savings!

Should You Switch to the T-Mobile Magenta Military Plan?

Overall, I have to say that T-Mobile offers the best bang for your buck out of all the major cellphone carriers. Their military discount is also the most generous of all the cellphone providers.

Is it right for you?

Only you can answer that.

I recommend looking at several factors:

• How the T-Mobile network is in your area
• The monthly cost of the T-Mobile Magenta Military plan compared to your current plan
• Other potential cost savings (Netflix subscription; being able to use your phone as a mobile hotspot; unlimited talk, text and data; etc.)
• Additional features – unlimited text and data overseas, unlimited media streaming
• Whether or not T-Mobile will assist you with buying out your current contract

Overall, I’d say T-Mobile will work for a lot of folks. But in other cases, you may currently have a better or more cost-effective plan. If so, stay with what works.

I can say in california they do. My father was 26 years in the AF and my mother was able to qualify for the military plan. Not sure what requirements were met to recieve it but it was honored

I have been a T-Mobile customer for several years now. I have been very happy with their service and price. My son worked for them for a while and got us an additional discount as well. Recently, I saw the new military one plan they offered and checked into it. The rep at the local store was very helpful and assured me the price would be 1/2 the regular plan price so we signed up. A month later we get our first bill and the price was NOT what we were expecting. It’s still a good deal but there are exclusions, caveats, mouse type, and lawyer speak. I was hoping T-Mobile was different but alas it is not so. 1/2 is not really 1/2.

T-Mobile is rolling out some new weapons in its competitive arsenal, including some new discounts on wireless service for service members and their families, investing more than half a billion dollars in its network capacity on and around military installations, and hiring more veterans and spouses.

Beginning April 22, service members (including active, Guard and reserve), retirees and other veterans, and Gold Star families can sign up for the T-Mobile ONE Military program and save .

The plan includes a 20 percent discount on the first phone line ($55, down from $70) and half off each line after that: $25 for a second line, $10 for lines three through six. Taxes and fees are included in those prices; a family of four would pay $100 a month for wireless service.

Lowe's expands, changes its military discount program

All honorably discharged veterans now qualify, along with active duty and retirees. but you'll need to sign up online..

The service member or veteran must be the primary account holder, and must sign up for an automatic payment plan, for the family to qualify. If the service member is deployed , the wireless service will work through a family member to set up and verify the discount.

Proof of service is required; for veterans without a military identification card, T-Mobile will accept other verification, including a DD-214.

The discount also will be available to veteran-owned businesses .

Interested customers can get the discount at any T-Mobile store, including wireless service concessionaires on 119 military bases, or call 1-800-TMobile (1-800-866-2453).

“This is the biggest discount we’ve ever offered on T-Mobile One, our flagship offering,” said Mike Sievert, chief operating officer for T-Mobile. “We think it solves a major untapped need in the market.”

Sievert said T-Mobile aims to “better serve the military community. We believe the wireless industry generally has not been doing enough and that we can do better.”

The new discount isn’t temporary — “We’re here to stay,” Sievert said. Military customers also can get 50 percent off some Samsung phones, including the Galaxy S9 and S9+, via bill credits during the month of May.

T-Mobile One Military includes everything in the T-Mobile One plan, such as unlimited text and data roaming and flat-rate calling in more than 140 countries; free calling and texting to and from Canada and Mexico; free Netflix Standard to watch on your TV, smartphone, table or other device, while on the family plan; and other features.

In addition to the discount, T-Mobile has committed more than half a billion dollars this year to expand long-term evolution, or LTE, high-speed capacity and lay the foundation for a 5G network around U.S. military installations and communities.

T-Mobile also has committed to recruit and hire 10,000 veterans and military spouses in the next five years. There are more than 5,000 T-Mobile locations across the U.S.

In 2016, the carrier committed to hiring 5,000 veterans and spouses within five years; it has about 5,000 at present, with about 2,000 of those hired within the last two years.

Sievert described veterans and spouses as a “fantastic talent pool,” and said they represent some of the company’s top employees.

Let’s take a look at the 5 best cell phone plans for military members, what you can expect to receive, and other methods to save money on your cell phone bill.

1. T-Mobile

T-Mobile is our first option on the list simply because it offers the best discounts for those in the military . This is true whether you’re a veteran, retired, or still on active duty. You’ll need to verify your military status, but once you do, T-Mobile offers a 40% discount on phone plans.

There are 4 different plans available at the 40% discount: Go5G Military, Go5G Plus Military, Magenta Military, and Magenta MAX Military. Each offers different benefits and pricing.

The Go5G Military plan offers unlimited talk, text, and data, plus a variety of other features.

• Cost : $60 per month for 1 line; as low as $30 per month with 4 lines
• Unlimited data; throttled after 100GB per month
• HD streaming
• 15GB of 4G LTE hotspot data
• International data and texting
• 10GB of high-speed data in Mexico and Canada
• Access to T-Mobile Tuesdays
• 1-year AAA membership
• 6 months of Apple TV+
• Free Netflix with 2 lines
• Inflight internet access

The higher-end version of the Go5G plan includes even more features:

The Magenta plans are an older version of phone plans still available to military members. They’re less expensive but don’t provide as many benefits.

• 5GB of high-speed data abroad
• Apple TV+ for 6 months
• 4 passes for full inflight internet per year
• Unlimited 1-hour inflight internet passes

The higher-end version of the Magenta plans won’t throttle your internet, but it’s still lacking in extras compared to T-Mobile’s newer plan options.

• Cost : $70 per month for 1 line; as low as $35 per month with 4 lines
• 4K UHD streaming
• 40GB of high-speed hotspot data
• Free Netflix

T-Mobile offers discounts of up to 40% on phone plans for eligible military and veterans. This can drop costs down to $25 per month when you have multiple lines!

2. Google Fi

Google debuted its cell phone plan system a few years back, dubbed Google Fi , and has been offering its own products ever since. The nice thing about Google Fi is that it’s simple . You can take your phone wherever you’d like, use an eSim to activate it, and never have to worry about roaming costs.

While Google doesn’t offer discounts for the military, it does allow those who are in the military to bring and use their eligible phone plans abroad without any extra costs .

This is a significant win over plans such as those offered by Verizon, which charge you up to $10 per day while traveling internationally.

Note that you’ll need to verify your government affiliation . You’ll also only be able to do this for 9 months, after which you’ll need to return to the U.S. or apply for another exception.

Currently, there are 3 different phone plans that Google Fi offers: Simply Unlimited, Unlimited Plus, and Flexible.

The original Google Fi plan, this option is the cheapest and best if you don’t use a lot of data.

• Cost : $20 per month + $10/GB up to $80 per month; $10 per month + data for 4 lines
• Unlimited data; throttled after 15GB per month (can pay extra to turn off throttling)
• Share data with other devices
• Hotspot at no additional cost
• Free calls to Canada and Mexico
• International data at no additional cost

Google debuted new unlimited options when it became clear that users were needing more data. Although cheap, the Simply Unlimited plan doesn’t offer international data .

• Cost : $50 per month for 1 line; $20 per month for 2 to 4 lines
• Unlimited data; throttled after 35GB
• 5GB of hotspot data per month
• Free data, text, and calls in Canada and Mexico

Google’s most expensive phone plan offers its best features, though you’ll pay for the privilege.

• Cost : $65 per month for 1 line; $40 per month for 4 lines
• Unlimited data; throttled after 50GB
• Unlimited hotspot tethering
• 1-year of YouTube Premium
• 100GB of Google One cloud storage
• Free phone calls to 50 countries
• Free international data
• Free texts abroad

Google Fi doesn’t offer a military discount, but it will allow you to use your phone abroad for up to 9 months at no extra charge.

Verizon is a fairly expensive phone company, though you’ll receive some of the fastest internet in the nation if you’re willing to shell out. Discounts for military members with Verizon vary, so you’ll need to verify your information to see what you’ll be offered.

The $20 per month option for the Welcome Unlimited plan can be a great deal if you have 4 folks to share it with. Although it’s an entry-level plan, it still provides decent service, including:

• 2GB per day of high-speed international data; throttled thereafter (costs extra)

Verizon’s military discounts aren’t the best, but you won’t find many unlimited plans for just $20 per month.

4. AT&T

One of the original cell phone giants, AT&T is still around providing phone plans to a large number of satisfied customers. Like Verizon, its plans tend to be more expensive than most. However, it gives veterans and active-duty service members a 25% discount on 3 different plans: the Unlimited Starter Plan, the Unlimited Extra Plan, and the Unlimited Premium Plan.

AT&T’s most basic offering still includes unlimited talk, text, and data, though you’re subject to throttling at any time .

• Cost : $48.75 per month for 1 line; $26.25 per month for 4 lines
• 3GB of hotspot data per month
• SD streaming

This mid-tier option provides slightly more benefits, but it’s still bare in comparison to competitors.

• Cost : $56.25 per month for 1 line; $30 per month for 4 lines
• 50GB of high-speed data ; may be throttled thereafter
• 15GB of hotspot data per month

AT&T’s best unlimited plan is just over $15 more per month than its cheapest, which will make it pretty enticing for those who use a lot of data.

• Cost : $63.75 per month for 1 line; $37.50 per month for 4 lines
• No throttled data
• 50GB of hotspot data per month

AT&T will give you a 25% discount on 3 of its best unlimited plans, but they’re still pricier than other options.

5. US Mobile

This last option is more of an honorary mention because it doesn’t offer any special benefits to those in the military. However, it’s so attractively priced — and so full of perks — that it’s worth considering over other providers.

US Mobile is a prepaid phone plan option running on the Verizon network. Don’t let the prepaid name fool you, however. Service is billed monthly and can be completed on autopay, which means you’ll see no functional difference from other cell phone providers.

US Mobile allows you to choose between unlimited and pay-as-you-go plans, but the unlimited options are where it really shines. There are 2 currently available: Unlimited Basic and Unlimited Premium.

US Mobile’s Unlimited Basic plan isn’t its top option, but it still offers more for less than other providers.

• Cost : $35 per month for 1 line; $20 per month for 4 lines
• 40GB of premium data; high-speed thereafter
• 5GB of hotspot data

If you travel often or consume a lot of data, you won’t find much better than US Mobile’s Unlimited Premium plan.

It’s great to have complimentary international data, but the most notable here is that the Unlimited Premium plan includes subscription perks. This means that in addition to dropping your monthly cost for your cell phone plan, you’ll also receive statement credits for a variety of services . This includes:

If you aren’t familiar with the pricing involved for these subscription services, here’s an idea: The Disney Bundle combo with ads currently charges $12.99 per month. In the end, you can either choose to pay $80 for 2 unlimited plans , or $92 for 3 phone plans and a subscription to Disney+, Hulu, and ESPN+ . That’s amazing!

US Mobile doesn’t even offer military pricing, but its public pricing — and its perks — put it on this list anyway.

We’re not talking about military discounts, which are given at the discretion of businesses as a way of saying “thank you.” We’re talking about federal regulations such as the Servicemembers Civil Relief Act (SCRA) and the Military Lending Act (MLA) .

These regulations limit the interest rate and the fees that businesses can charge, including annual fees. The SCRA applies to credit you’ve obtained before becoming an active-duty service member and limits the interest rate you can be charged to 6% . This is true for both consumer and small business products.

The MLA , meanwhile, applies to credit that you acquire while you’re actively serving. It caps the interest rate to 36% and applies to consumer credit, though some lenders are known to extend this benefit to small business products.

That brings us to the Amex Business Platinum card , which is a high-end card offered by American Express. It charges an exorbitant annual fee of $695 but grants customers the ability to earn American Express Membership Rewards points and offers plenty of statement credits in return.

What does this have to do with cell phone plans and active-duty military members? Well, if your Amex Business Platinum card is eligible for SCRA relief you’ll be able to have the annual fee not charged .

As we mentioned, the Amex Business Platinum card provides a lot of perks as thanks for its expensive annual fee, one of which is a monthly credit of up to $10 towards cell phone plans .

Sure, it’s not a huge monthly benefit, but the up to $10 per month you’ll receive as a credit can make a big difference when paired with some of these discounts.

If, for example, you were to use your Amex Business Platinum card to pay for just 1 line of the Unlimited Basic plan offered by US Mobile, you’d drop your monthly out-of-pocket cost to $25 . That includes unlimited data, free international texting, and 5GB of hotspot data. Not bad!

The Amex Platinum card doesn’t offer a monthly cell phone credit, but it’s absolutely a card you should acquire if you’re in the military .

There are a couple of reasons for this, but the biggest one is that the annual fee (which is normally $695 ) is not charged via the MLA if you’re an active-duty service member. Not only that, were your spouse to get an Amex Platinum card as well, their annual fee would also not be charged .

The Amex Platinum card has a whole host of benefits , one of which is cell phone insurance . This means that if you pay your phone bill with your card, you’ll be able to make a claim in the event your phone is stolen or damaged.

There are limitations to this; your total claim amount cannot be more than $800 and you can only make 2 claims in a 12-month period . There’s also a $50 deductible . However, this is a great perk to have on a card for which you’re paying no annual fee.

Joining the military costs a lot, which is one reason why so many companies are eager to give back. This is the case for many cell phone plan providers, which will give discounts to veterans and military service members alike.

T-Mobile’s 40% discount on plans provides the best bang for your buck, but Verizon, AT&T, Google Fi, and even US Mobile are in the running with a variety of options for those who’ve served.

The Verizon Unlimited plan ranks as the best overall, and maybe even the best with unlimited data because a basic unlimited package costs $60 per month with the Verizon military discount and access to one of the strongest 5G networks in the country.

With Verizon’s basic plan, the Welcome Unlimited, you get unlimited access to the company’s nationwide 5G network; you can talk, text, and use data in Canada and Mexico; and you can text from the U.S. to more than 200 countries around the globe. And, to receive the military discount, all you have to do is verify your eligibility.

Additionally, Verizon has some of the best coverage in the U.S. According to a J.D. Power survey, Verizon had the fewest network quality problems in all six regions across the country. However, if you consider customer service survey ratings of big and small carriers, Verizon ranks near the bottom.

For that basic package, you’ll spend $60 before taxes, but for $10 or $20 more per line per month, you will get a variety of streaming packages like Hulu and Disney, significantly more mobile hotspot data, premium network access, an international pass, and cloud storage.

The AT&T Unlimited Premium package ranks as the best for overseas because coverage extends not just to Canada and Mexico, but to Latin American, as well. Plus, with the plan, you get access to a handful of coverage options for more than 210 destinations around the globe.

For a single line, the Unlimited Premium package costs $63.75 with the AT&T military discount. That saves you a little more than $21 per month. And since it’s a premium package, you get the most benefits out of all of AT&T’s Unlimited packages. In addition to unlimited talk, text, and data on a 5G network, it includes a 50-gig mobile hotspot and 4K streaming.

For international coverage, you have a few options. If you’re traveling, you can buy a $10 per day pass to talk, text, and use data in any location covered in the plan. Additionally, if all you want to do is call international numbers, you can pay an optional $15 per month per line for the service. And, you can also get the AT&T Cruise Package if you want to vacation at sea.

Overseas, AT&T’s network covers almost all of Europe, 19 countries in Central and South America, and huge chunks of Asia, Africa, and Australia. In the U.S., though, coverage is top-notch. In fact, a J.D. Power study found AT&T had the second fewest network quality problems in six regions. However, AT&T also ranked near the bottom for customer satisfaction.

Active-duty troops and reservists can access the AT&T military discount by using their .mil email addresses or verifying their status in person at a storefront. Veterans must verify their status in person, as well.

The Cricket Unlimited + 15GB Mobile Hotspot plan ranks as best for active duty, but take it with a grain of salt. With this recommendation, we’re assuming that you’re a junior enlisted making less than $25,000 a year. We picked the Cricket plan because for a single line, it costs $60 per month and you join a 5G and 4G LTE network, get a bunch of features, and you can drop the service at any time.

We also want to point out that Cricket offers four plans, but we picked its premium package. The first two cap data at five and 10 gigs per month, and the third offers unlimited data but none of the frills as the Unlimited + 15GB. And for the extra $5, we think it’s worth it — primarily, the 15 gig mobile hotspot, 150 gig cloud storage, and HBO Max streaming service. And it’s still a good package even if you add lines. The plan will cover five lines for $160 per month.

While Cricket does not offer a military discount, you might qualify for a discounted rate if your annual household income is less than $12,880. That means if you are providing for one or more people with less than $25,760, then you qualify for the Affordable Connectivity Program, which can lower your phone bill by $30 each month.

Additionally, Cricket’s coverage across the U.S. is solid with only a few chunks missing in rural parts of the country (it actually uses AT&T’s network). Plus, Cricket’s customer satisfaction ratings can’t be beaten. The company took first and second in the surveys we reviewed to rank carriers.

T-Mobile Magenta

The T-Mobile Magenta plan ranks as the best for families because the T-Mobile military discount actually reduces the price per line — which isn’t always the case — and you can add as many as five lines. In the end, you’ll pay a total of $110 per month (including taxes and fees) for unlimited data and a whole lot of benefits.

T-Mobile offers two Magenta military plans. While they come with the same basic services — unlimited data, talk and text; 5G access; data and texting abroad; service in Canada and Mexico; Netflix; and more — the Magenta Max comes with 4K streaming, 40 gigs of hotspot access instead of five, and Apple TV for an extra $10 per line per month. Also, you don’t need a family for the family plan. The added lines could be used to connect a tablet and/or smartwatch.

Additionally, out of all of the carriers we looked at, T-Mobile ranks third highest for customer satisfaction. However, T-Mobile’s service does have a couple of drawbacks. First, a study by J.D. Power found that it had more network quality problems than average in four out of six regions in the U.S. That means T-Mobile customers had issues with one in every 10 connections.

And, second, if you look at T-Mobile’s coverage map, you’ll see a Nebraska-size hole in it. According to the Solid Signal blog, T-Mobile’s lack of coverage in the Cornhusker State is because of its 2020 acquisition of Sprint, which failed to expand its network into rural areas like other cellular companies did. Since then, T-Mobile has focused on updating Sprint’s network rather than expanding it.

To be eligible for T-Mobile’s military discount, the serviceman, woman, or veteran needs to be the primary account holder and verify their status at a T-Mobile store. Plans start at $55 and $70, respectively, for a single line, but the price drops $15 for the second line, and then $10 for each additional line after that.

When it comes to the best budget options for cell phone plans, it’s really a buyer’s market. However, we picked Boost Mobile because out of all the value options, it actually ranked on customer satisfaction surveys. It isn’t to say it’s the very best budget option, but rather it’s one we can quantify.

While Boost Mobile took the penultimate spot on the American Customer Satisfaction Index’s 2022 survey and J.D. Power ranked it fifth out of eight for that same year, there are still a dozen carriers that didn’t make the cut for one reason or another.

As for Boost Mobile’s plan, the cheapest option is $8.33 per month, or just shy of $100 annually. For that price, you get unlimited talk and text, one gig of data, and a mobile hotspot. If you opt to spend $80 more per year, you’ll get five gigs of data per month. And if you spend $360 per year, you get unlimited data and a 12-gig mobile hotspot.

Additionally, with all of Boost Mobile’s plans, you get access to T-Mobile’s 5G and 4G networks. If you read our entry on T-Mobile’s plan, you’ll learn the carrier’s national coverage is extensive, but largely skips over Nebraska.

Things to consider about military phone plans

Service providers.

There are more than a dozen companies offering cell phone plans, but there are considerable differences in services depending on which carrier you choose. Major carriers like T-Mobile, Verizon, and AT&T offer plans that include new phones, streaming subscriptions, insurance, and more if you sign a contract. Whereas smaller carriers, called mobile virtual network operators, like Cricket, Mint, and Boost Mobile, offer no-frills plans at cheaper rates for a limited or no contractual obligation.  

While the services differ by carrier, they all offer consistent coverage throughout the country. If you pull up the coverage map for an MVNO, it’ll most likely overlap with one belonging to a major carrier. That’s because the major carriers own and operate most of the infrastructure across the country that make cell service possible. They sell bulk data to the MVNOs, which sell chunks to you. 

Almost all major carriers offer unlimited data in even their most basic plans. That means you can talk, text, stream, or browse the web for as long as you want. However, companies will cap “premium data,” meaning your service will slow down after using so much “hotspot” data. You turn your phone into a mobile hotspot by creating a localized Wi-Fi signal that connects other devices like a tablet or laptop to your network. 

While most MVNOs also offer unlimited data, they generally offer plans that cap data. Other exceptions include prepaid plans, which require you to buy the data up front, and there are also pay-as-you-go plans in which you only pay for the data you use. 

How much data you actually need depends on factors like how often you stream, browse the web, use GPS, listen to music, and connect to a Wi-Fi signal. If you’re unsure about how much you need, the Swedish-based company Ericsson found that the average smartphone owner in North America used 15 gigabytes of data per month in 2021. The communication tech company also projected they’d use some 52 gigabytes per month by 2027. 

The coverage map for most carriers shows a network that spans the majority of the United States and even extends into Canada and Mexico. The map highlights the area in which you can reliably use that company’s network. If you’re outside of your network, you’ll have limited or no service. And, if you do use service in that area, you may be charged a roaming fee. 

Additionally, most coverage maps show 5G connectivity. The fifth-generation wireless network is the latest iteration of cellular technology. While it may sound like pixie dust to most of us, it’s actually a massive infrastructure of things like towers, antennas, and fiber optic cables designed to capture a vast amount of information and allow it to flow in mere moments from point A to point B (and to big brother ). 

In short, before you commit to a cellular plan, you should review the coverage map to make sure it actually covers your area and the areas you plan on traveling to. 

International coverage

International coverage is rarely offered in a basic cell phone plan, but major carriers usually offer it as a premium option, as an add-on, or in pre-paid plans. 

The Servicemembers Civil Relief Act 

Congress created the Servicemembers Civil Relief Act in the 1940s to protect servicemen and women from unfair financial burdens if they’re called into action. The law has been amended, so troops can request carriers to cancel or hold their service plan if they are deployed or receive orders to relocate. According to the law, you have 90 days to notify your carrier that you want to hold or cancel your plan, and the carrier must reserve your phone number and give you 39 months to reactivate your account.

Q: does the va pay for cell phones.

A: Not exactly. The Federal Communication Commission has a program that provides free phone service to low-income consumers, including those eligible for the Veterans Pension and Survivors Benefit Programs, through the Lifeline Program. Q: Do I need to submit documentation to verify my military status?

A: Some providers require documentation to get military discounts. AT&T requires active-duty members to register with a .mil email address to get their discount. Active-duty and veteran servicemembers can use their ID.me account to apply for discounts with Verizon. Some of the reviewed plans did not offer veteran discounts but still beat out providers that did.

Final thoughts

If you’re a lazy shopper, then you can’t go wrong with a Verizon Unlimited plan. It has everything you’d want in a phone plan: strong service, wide coverage, premium options, and even international passes. But if you want something more bare bones and less of a commitment, you can’t go wrong with Cricket or Boost Mobile .

What we don’t like about the Verizon Unlimited Welcome Plan

A few bucks more.

Though you’re saving money with your Verizon military cell phone plan, you’re paying a little more than you would with another provider. Over the course of a year, those extra bucks certainly do add up.

If you want a cheaper deal or a better military and veteran discount, you might want to consider AT&T or T-Mobile, but just be aware you won’t have the same coverage or internet speeds.

Other Verizon veteran cell phone plans

There is one other Verizon military cell phone plan you can choose from. It's more expensive than Verizon Unlimited Welcome for Military, but it packs a lot of data and gives you unlimited premium data.

AT&T Unlimited Starter for Military: Best budget buy

What we like about the at&t unlimited starter for military plan, cheapest price.

Out of all the military discount cell phone plans, AT&T will save you the most money month after month. No matter what veteran cell phone plan you opt for, you’re saving money, but AT&T takes it to another level. Over the course of a year, you can save more than $100 with AT&T. (Hey, $100 can go a really long way!)

Now you’re probably wondering—what’s the catch with AT&T? We’ll get there. But the long and short of it is higher activation fees and coverage that isn’t as good as Verizon.

Phone upgrade and free movie tickets

With the AT&T Next and Next Every Year programs, you can upgrade your phone to the latest model before you've even finished paying it off. While this might promote fiscal irresponsibility, it's hard to argue with an iPhone 14 Pro.

AT&T will also give you free movie tickets and other entertainment perks because why not? Don't ask questions. Just take the free stuff.

What we don’t like about AT&T Unlimited Starter for Military Plan

Slow streaming speeds.

Sadly, this plan caps your video streaming speed at 1.5 Mbps. That means even your standard definition content on Netflix is going to be a bit grainy , at best.

Coverage isn't quite the best

There’s a small gap between AT&T and Verizon when it comes to coverage, but AT&T’s coverage is still second-best . Putting it in this section sounds a bit nit-picky, and it probably is, but you should know that the cheaper monthly price comes with coverage that’s less than the best.

If you live in a big city, though, and you don’t go out in the country too often, AT&T should provide you with solid coverage.

AT&T has a couple of other plans for military that will give you more high speed data (and higher bills). Check it out.

T-Mobile Magenta Eligible Military Only: Best family plan

What we like about t-mobile magenta eligible military only, cheap to add extra lines.

The bigger the family, the better T-Mobile sets up its family plans. With your veteran or active duty status, adding lines is cheap. And not everyone on your family plan needs to be veterans or military members. Seriously, call up grandma, call up your grandchildren, call up your siblings, and get them on your T-Mobile veteran plan. 

It only costs $40 a month add a second line to your plan, and just $25 a line after that. (The family that pays together stays together, right?)

Breakup made easy

T-Mobile wants your business. So much so that it’ll cover your remaining payments with your current provider (AT&T or Verizon). As long as you trade in your old phone and opt into a new contract, you’ll be free to join T-Mobile without forking over a bunch of money on cancelation fees with your old provider.

What we don’t like about T-Mobile Magenta Eligible Military Only

Less coverage in rural areas.

T-Mobile’s coverage isn’t quite as reliable as Verizon, but it’s still decent. Just don’t be surprised if your network drops while you’re out in the wilderness.

We recently took a T-Mobile phone out into the wilderness of Yellowstone to see if we could find any bars. About 10 minutes after we passed through the national park gates, our bars started dropping like flies. Coverage crept back up from time to time, but the coverage was far from reliable. This is a good thing to keep in mind if you're going to find yourself in a national park or exploring the great outdoors any time soon.

Likewise, if you live in a more rural area, or camping is your family vacation of choice, you might run into low bars with a T-Mobile plan.

Does T-Mobile have any other choices for veterans?

Sadly, no. The only T-Mobile veteran plan is the Magenta Eligible Military Only.

• Best overall veteran plan: The Verizon Unlimited Welcome Plan for Military gets you amazing coverage and speed for an affordable price. It’s not the cheapest military cell phone plan, but it’s got the most bang for your buck.
• Best budget plan: The Unlimited AT&T Unlimited Starter for Military plan is your best bargain option for frugal vets. You get decent coverage and some free movie tickets.
• Best family plan: We recommend the T-Mobile Magenta Eligible Military Only plan for the whole family. It’s the cheapest way to add multiple lines to an existing military plan.

Verizon's military cell phone plans offer discounts to all branches of the United States military, including the following:

• Coast Guard
• All military reserves and National Guard
• GoldStar Families
• Veterans of all branches

T-Mobile's military cell phone plans offer discounts to the following United States branches:

• Navy Reserve
• Air Force Reserve
• Marine Corps
• Marine Corps Forces Reserve
• Air National Guard
• Coast Guard Reserve
• Gold Star Family - Gold Star
• Army National Guard
• Army Reserve

Unfortunately, spouses and immediate family members of current or former military members who don't have Gold Star Family member status won't be eligible for a T-Mobile military cell phone plan. The same restriction applies to government or military-affiliated workers such as Civilian Military and Department of Defense employees as well as cadets or recruits who don't have documentation yet showing their military status.

AT&T offers military members, veterans, and their families 25% off wireless services.

To qualify for AT&T's military discount, you'll need to provide one of the following forms of identification:

• Valid military ID or retired military ID
• Department of Defense Form DD214
• Recent paystub
• AMVETS membership card
• Veteran Health Insurance card

Pro tip: You'll need to make sure the primary account holder is a veteran or military member.

Remy Cointreau reports better-than-expected Q4 sales

Cognac maker Remy Cointreau reported a 0.7% decline in fourth-quarter sales on Friday, well ahead of analyst expectations for a 3.4% fall.

Sweden's SKF , the world's biggest maker of industrial bearings, reported adjusted first-quarter earnings that topped market expectations in the face of slowing demand and said it expected softer like-for-like sales in the second quarter.

These 112 House Republicans voted against Ukraine aid

• The House passed a more than $60 billion bill that provides more military aid to Ukraine.
• It's part of a larger foreign aid package that's likely to pass the Senate and be signed into law.
• 112 Republicans voted it against — the most ever, and a majority of the GOP conference.

The House of Representatives on Saturday passed a more than $60 billion bill to provide military and economic aid to Ukraine.

A solid majority of Republicans voted against the bill, which passed by a 311-112 margin. 101 Republicans voted for it, and one Republican, Rep. Dan Meuser of Pennsylvania, voted "present."

The Ukraine aid bill came to the floor after months of delay and despite staunch opposition from the hard right, including a threat from Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene to call a vote to oust House Speaker Mike Johnson if he allowed such a vote.

Under Johnson's unconventional plan , the Ukraine bill will be sent to the Senate as part of a package that includes aid for Israel and Taiwan and a third bill that forces a sale of TikTok and allows the United States to confiscate Russian assets . Each component received its own vote in the House on Saturday.

The bill is widely expected to pass the Senate in the coming days, as it generally mirrors a $95.3 billion national security bill passed by the upper chamber in February. President Joe Biden has pledged to sign it into law.

Saturday's vote marked the first time the House had approved billions of dollars in Ukraine aid since December 2022, when Democrats still controlled the chamber.

In the two years since Russia's invasion, opposition to aiding Ukraine has grown from a fringe position to a majority view among House GOP lawmakers. Many argue the money should be spent domestically or that policy changes at the US-Mexico border should take precedence.

The new infusion of aid comes at a make-or-break moment for Ukraine , which has faced ammo shortages and insufficient air defenses.

As a result of his move, Johnson could face a vote on his ouster in the coming weeks. The GOP speaker, however, has grown more willing to confront the threat from the right, and Democrats have suggested that they're willing to protect him from an ouster effort if he allowed a vote on Ukraine aid.

"If I operated out of fear of a motion to vacate, I would never be able to do my job," Johnson told reporters this week. "History judges us for what we do. This is a critical time right now."
