About Taj Mahal

The world-famous Taj Mahal was created because of the vision of the Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan. After she passed away, he built this monument in honour of his devoted wife, Mumtaz Mahal.

In honour of his beloved wife, Shah Jahan hired the best artisans worldwide to build it. He was going to make something that had never been done before. The emperor desired to give his beloved wife one last present. People still praise Shah Jahan for his fantastic deed. It encourages you to value and cherish love in new ways. My Experience with Taj Mahal

On the day of the full moon in October of this year, I went to the Taj Mahal with a few of my schoolmates. The silvery moonlight glistening everywhere and glamorising the Taj brings out the best in its splendour. Greenery and flowerbeds nicely adorn the area around it. I was ecstatic to visit the Taj. Hundreds of men, women, and kids gathered to admire the Taj's magnificence. There were sizable groups of foreigners arriving. We also clicked many pictures in front of the monument.

The Taj Mahal was listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1983 and is regarded as one of the most exquisite structural compositions in the entire world. After Mumtaz Mahal passed away, Shah Jahan erected the Taj Mahal in her honour and as a memorial. According to legend, Shah Jahan gave his wife the Taj Mahal as a gift. It is regarded as a representation of love and the tie between a husband and wife. It's interesting to note that the Taj Mahal is thought to represent Mumtaz's various emotions because it appears pinkish in the morning, milky white in the evening, and golden when the moon is out.

When Shah Jahan's wife was alive, he made her four vows. These commitments include constructing the Taj, getting remarried, going to the grave on each anniversary of his passing, and being kind to his kids. After two years, he decided to erect a memorial in her honour. Therefore, he decided to create a unique monument that had never been built before. My Visit to Taj Mahal

A trip to a historical site is always a thrilling adventure. It is an exciting journey. During my recent summer vacation, when I visited Agra, I had one such encounter. I took the train to get to Agra with my family. After a short period of recovery, we started our sight seeing tour. Agra has a rich history. In India, numerous stunning historical sites are worth visiting. The most spectacular of all, though, is the Taj Mahal in Agra. First, we went to the Taj Mahal. The Mughal emperor Shah Jahan erected the Taj Mahal 350 years ago as a tribute to his beloved queen Mumtaj. It is situated along the Yamuna River's bank.

On all sides, it appeared white and identical. Green glass tufts and hot Cyprus tree shoots enhanced its majestic majesty. We descended the stairs and under the dome, in a dim room, we discovered the king and queen's graves. The side walls were ornamented with bits of glass in various colours and Quranic couplets. Each of the four minarets at the major buildings served as a watchman.

We finished our tour of the Taj Mahal at about noon and left the area. My journey to the Taj Mahal was a lot of fun. It was a unique event that, in addition to being intellectually stimulating, provided us with a taste of our nation's great heritage.

According to legend, Shah Jahan's favorite wife bound him with a deathbed promise to build her the most beautiful mausoleum ever known.

The Taj Mahal is widely considered one of the most beautiful buildings ever created. The exquisite marble structure in Agra, India, is a mausoleum, an enduring monument to the love of a husband for his favorite wife. It's also an eternal testament to the artistic and scientific accomplishments of a wealthy empire.

Shah Jahan, “the King of the World,” took control of the Mughal Empire throne in 1628 very much in love with the queen he dubbed Mumtaz Mahal or “Chosen One of the Palace.” The poets at Agra’s Mughal court said her beauty was such that the moon hid its face in shame before her.

The Mughals were at the peak of their power and wealth during Shah Jahan’s reign, and India’s rich lode of precious gems yielded him much wealth and power. But he was powerless to stop Mumtaz Mahal’s death during childbirth in 1631. Legend has it that she bound him with a deathbed promise to build her the most beautiful tomb ever known.

Promise or no, Shah Jahan poured his passion and wealth into the creation of just such a monument. It is said that 20,000 stone carvers, masons, and artists from across India and as far as Turkey and Iraq were employed under a team of architects to build the Taj Mahal in the lush gardens on the banks of Agra’s Jamuna River. They completed the epic task between 1631 and 1648.

While the arch-and-dome profile of clean white marble has become iconic, other beauties lie in the Taj Mahal’s painstaking details: inlaid semiprecious stones and carvings and Koranic verse in calligraphy create an enchanting interior space where Shah Jahan came to visit his wife’s remains before he was eventually interred at her side.

The Taj Mahal’s familiar marble domes are framed by four minarets from which Muslims are called to prayer. Each is designed with a slight outward lean, presumably to protect the main mausoleum in case one of them should collapse.

Two red sandstone buildings also flank the main mausoleum on either side. One, to the west, is a mosque. The other is a former guesthouse.

These buildings are set within lush gardens, complete with an enormous reflecting pool that regularly does what no human has ever been able to accomplish—duplicate the beauty of the Taj Mahal.

Shah Jahan himself gazed upon that beautiful image until the end of his days—but as a prisoner, not a ruler. His son Aurangzeb seized the Mughal throne and imprisoned his father in Agra’s Red Fort (itself a World Heritage site and popular tourist attraction). Whether as consolation or torture, Shah Jahan commanded a view of the Taj Mahal from his window.

Agra is a major city in the Indian state of Uttar Pradesh and well accustomed to visitors—some three million people visit the Taj Mahal each year. The city is accessible by bus, train, and (limited) air service and has a wide range of tourist amenities. Access to the Taj Mahal complex is on foot.

When to Visit

The Taj Mahal is a year-round attraction and often busy, though new ticketing systems have thinned crowds at peak times. Visitors in search of more solitude might try coming early or late in the day. One time NOT to visit is on Friday, when the Taj Mahal is closed.

The Taj Mahal is located on the right bank of the Yamuna River in a vast Mughal garden that encompasses nearly 17 hectares, in the Agra District in Uttar Pradesh. It was built by Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan in memory of his wife Mumtaz Mahal with construction starting in 1632 AD and completed in 1648 AD, with the mosque, the guest house and the main gateway on the south, the outer courtyard and its cloisters were added subsequently and completed in 1653 AD. The existence of several historical and Quaranic inscriptions in Arabic script have facilitated setting the chronology of Taj Mahal. For its construction, masons, stone-cutters, inlayers, carvers, painters, calligraphers, dome builders and other artisans were requisitioned from the whole of the empire and also from the Central Asia and Iran. Ustad-Ahmad Lahori was the main architect of the Taj Mahal.

The Taj Mahal is considered to be the greatest architectural achievement in the whole range of Indo-Islamic architecture. Its recognised architectonic beauty has a rhythmic combination of solids and voids, concave and convex and light shadow; such as arches and domes further increases the aesthetic aspect. The colour combination of lush green scape reddish pathway and blue sky over it show cases the monument in ever changing tints and moods. The relief work in marble and inlay with precious and semi precious stones make it a monument apart.

The uniqueness of Taj Mahal lies in some truly remarkable innovations carried out by the horticulture planners and architects of Shah Jahan. One such genius planning is the placing of tomb at one end of the quadripartite garden rather than in the exact centre, which added rich depth and perspective to the distant view of the monument. It is also, one of the best examples of raised tomb variety. The tomb is further raised on a square platform with the four sides of the octagonal base of the minarets extended beyond the square at the corners. The top of the platform is reached through a lateral flight of steps provided in the centre of the southern side. The ground plan of the Taj Mahal is in perfect balance of composition, the octagonal tomb chamber in the centre, encompassed by the portal halls and the four corner rooms. The plan is repeated on the upper floor. The exterior of the tomb is square in plan, with chamfered corners. The large double storied domed chamber, which houses the cenotaphs of Mumtaz Mahal and Shah Jahan, is a perfect octagon in plan. The exquisite octagonal marble lattice screen encircling both cenotaphs is a piece of superb workmanship. It is highly polished and richly decorated with inlay work. The borders of the frames are inlaid with precious stones representing flowers executed with wonderful perfection. The hues and the shades of the stones used to make the leaves and the flowers appear almost real. The cenotaph of Mumtaz Mahal is in perfect centre of the tomb chamber, placed on a rectangular platform decorated with inlaid flower plant motifs. The cenotaph of Shah Jahan is greater than Mumtaz Mahal and installed more than thirty years later by the side of the latter on its west. The upper cenotaphs are only illusory and the real graves are in the lower tomb chamber (crypt), a practice adopted in the imperial Mughal tombs.

The four free-standing minarets at the corners of the platform added a hitherto unknown dimension to the Mughal architecture. The four minarets provide not only a kind of spatial reference to the monument but also give a three dimensional effect to the edifice.

The most impressive in the Taj Mahal complex next to the tomb, is the main gate which stands majestically in the centre of the southern wall of the forecourt. The gate is flanked on the north front by double arcade galleries. The garden in front of the galleries is subdivided into four quarters by two main walk-ways and each quarters in turn subdivided by the narrower cross-axial walkways, on the Timurid-Persian scheme of the walled in garden. The enclosure walls on the east and west have a pavilion at the centre.

The Taj Mahal is a perfect symmetrical planned building, with an emphasis of bilateral symmetry along a central axis on which the main features are placed. The building material used is brick-in-lime mortar veneered with red sandstone and marble and inlay work of precious/semi precious stones. The mosque and the guest house in the Taj Mahal complex are built of red sandstone in contrast to the marble tomb in the centre. Both the buildings have a large platform over the terrace at their front. Both the mosque and the guest house are the identical structures. They have an oblong massive prayer hall consist of three vaulted bays arranged in a row with central dominant portal. The frame of the portal arches and the spandrels are veneered in white marble. The spandrels are filled with flowery arabesques of stone intarsia and the arches bordered with rope molding.

Criterion (i): Taj Mahal represents the finest architectural and artistic achievement through perfect harmony and excellent craftsmanship in a whole range of Indo-Islamic sepulchral architecture. It is a masterpiece of architectural style in conception, treatment and execution and has unique aesthetic qualities in balance, symmetry and harmonious blending of various elements.

Integrity is maintained in the intactness of tomb, mosque, guest house, main gate and the whole Taj Mahal complex. The physical fabric is in good condition and structural stability, nature of foundation, verticality of the minarets and other constructional aspects of Taj Mahal have been studied and continue to be monitored. To control the impact of deterioration due for atmospheric pollutants, an air control monitoring station is installed to constantly monitor air quality and control decay factors as they arise. To ensure the protection of the setting, the adequate management and enforcement of regulations in the extended buffer zone is needed. In addition, future development for tourist facilities will need to ensure that the functional and visual integrity of the property is maintained, particularly in the relationship with the Agra Fort.

Authenticity

The tomb, mosque, guest house, main gate and the overall Taj Mahal complex have maintained the conditions of authenticity at the time of inscription. Although an important amount of repairs and conservation works have been carried out right from the British period in India these have not compromised to the original qualities of the buildings. Future conservation work will need to follow guidelines that ensure that qualities such as form and design continue to be preserved.

Protection and management requirements

The management of Taj Mahal complex is carried out by the Archaeological Survey of India and the legal protection of the monument and the control over the regulated area around the monument is through the various legislative and regulatory frameworks that have been established, including the Ancient Monument and Archaeological Sites and Remains Act 1958 and Rules 1959 Ancient Monuments and Archaeological Sites and Remains (Amendment and Validation); which is adequate to the overall administration of the property and buffer areas. Additional supplementary laws ensure the protection of the property in terms of development in the surroundings.

An area of 10,400 sq km around the Taj Mahal is defined to protect the monument from pollution. The Supreme Court of India in December, 1996, delivered a ruling banning use of coal/coke in industries located in the Taj Trapezium Zone (TTZ) and switching over to natural gas or relocating them outside the TTZ. The TTZ comprises of 40 protected monuments including three World Heritage Sites - Taj Mahal, Agra Fort and Fatehpur Sikri.

The fund provided by the federal government is adequate for the buffer areas. The fund provided by the federal government is adequate for the overall conservation, preservation and maintenance of the complex to supervise activities at the site under the guidance of the Superintending Archaeologist of the Agra Circle. Thousands of visitors come to see this wonderful building of Love in Agra every year. Thousands of artists, artisans and workers worked for twenty years to complete it. About 20 crores of rupees were spent on it. The beauty of the Taj smiles in the silvery night of the full moon.

The walls of the Taj Mahal are decorated and carved with gem-stones of different colours. The couplets from Quran are written on the walls. The Taj is situated on a high raised platform. The graves of the King and the Queen are under the dome in a dark chamber. There are four minarets at the four comers of the platform. Everyone praises Taj for its beauty and art.

The Taj can be viewed in the full moon nights to see an admirable view fully. The real graves are under the dummy graves.

We went down the staircase. We found the graves of the Emperor and the Queen under the dome in a dark chamber. Multicoloured pieces of glass and couplets decorated the side walls. The four pillars stood as watchmen at each corner of the main building.

A full moon night followed in a couple of days. We visited the Taj Majal again that night. Its beauty smiled in the silvery light of the moon. It was a very beautiful sight. My joy had no bounds when I saw its reflection in the river Yamuna. A clear picture of monument could be seen. I closed my eyes and opened them again to check if it was a reality.

The Taj Mahal was built about three hundred years ago by the Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan in the loving memory of his beloved queen, Mumtaz Mahal.

The surrounding area of Taj Mahal is well decorated with greenery and there are many beautiful flower beds in the surrounding. We were really ecstatic on seeing the Taj Mahal and the vision cast a sort of magic spell on us. Its majestic beauty was further enhanced by the green tufts of grass and the green shoots of the cyprus trees.

There were uncountable men, women and children who had come to enjoy the beauty of the Taj. Also, there were many foreigners who were clicking their cameras. No doubt, there are many beautiful temples in South India and Hindu temples in Rajasthan and elsewhere are matchless in their beauty but the beauty of the Taj Mahal is unparalleled.

Lakhs of people from India and abroad visit the Taj every year. They don’t tire while commending its beauty. It is majestic in its beauty; such a beauty can be conceived only in a dream. However, the Taj is a reality, but a dreamy reality, so captivating is its beauty.

The Taj Mahal was caused to be built by Mughal Emperor Shahjehan in the memory of his beloved queen Mumtaj Mahal. The Taj has become symbolic of intense love these days.

I along with my several schoolmates visited the Taj Mahal on the full moon day in October this year. The beauty of the Taj is at its peak under the silvery moonlight spreading all over the place and glamorizing the Taj. Its surroundings are well-decorated with greenery and flower beds. We felt overjoyed to see the Taj. Hundreds of men, women, and children had collected there to enjoy the beauty of the Taj. There were large groups of foreigners clicking their cameras. We also posed for photographs.

The Taj is a wonderful dream come true in marble. Its architectural design is superb. It has four minerals on four corners with an onion-shaped dome in the center. Couplets from Koran are engraved beautifully on its walls which is again a wonder of calligraphy. Flowery designs are inset with precious coloured stones. Above all, it is made up of spotless white marble. We went down the staircase and visited the graves of the emperor and the empress who lie side by side in their graves over there. Nobody is allowed to go there with shoes on; however, canvas shoes were provided to us by the men on duty outside.

The vision cast a magic spell on me and my friends after seeing it under the full moon that day. We felt that it was a sight fit to be seen by the gods so much inviting the ‘fa; appeared to us that time. The green tufts of grass and the green shoots of the Cyprus trees adorned its majestic beauty appeared to add to its majestic beauty many times more.

I took objection to a friend’s remarks when he asked what beauty it had but for its marble-made heavy structure. He also stated that many Hindu temples in Rajasthan and South India were far more beautiful than The Taj Mahal. I agreed with him that the Rajputana temples were quite beautiful and also the temples in south India but tried to convince him that so far as the Taj was concerned it had its own unique design and its execution to which he also nodded. Of course, the Taj is supremely beautiful. We felt rewarded after seeing it.

Next, we went to see the fort and tried to peep at the Taj through a window. There are many shops near the gate selling beautiful things.

We had a nice time at Taj and came back to Delhi by car. I think every Indian should go to Agra to see the Taj. I hope to go there again.

A Visit to the Taj

Taj, the eighth wonder of the world, the ever-living creation of man stands on the bank of the Yamuna River near Agra. It is a symbol of the love of a king Shahjahan for his beloved queen Mumtaz Mahal.

We had a group visiting for this memorable monument by the Mughal emperor. The visit was organised by the History professor, who organised the tour for a spot study. We were more than thirty students. We travelled from Delhi to Agra by bus. The journey started early morning and we started at 9.00 a.m and we were there by 12.30. We fixed up our luggage in the student hostel and proceeded towards the destination. Taj, the greatest and the finish carved piece of the Mughal period was there for our objective tour.

We entered through the main gates after crossing a long queue. We were moving on the red-tiled passages of the building. Taj is surrounded by water sprayers Garden and then another encircled arena. It has four minars in white marble and then a tomb in the center. All walls of the building are engraved in colours and lustrous stones. The marble virtually changes colours when the light falls on it. Some guides state that the building was a piece of architecture by Shuraji, the Persian architect. It is further said that he too was thereafter losing his beloved and had a cherished desire to make such a memorable building.

Millions of tourists come to see the unique piece from far-off places. This is a rare depiction which has the graves of Begum and family in the depth of it. Shahjahan was imprisoned by his son Aurangzeb in Red Fort in the last part of his reign. He used to see the Taj through a glass piece in a hole in the wall. Shahjahan lost his three sons Dara, Shuja, and Murad at the hands of Aurangzeb in the struggle to capture the seat of the Mughal kingdom.

Taj has lost its glamour when most of the pearls fixed in walls were removed by the next rulers in the country. Although a considerable amount is provided for maintenance and upkeep, even then the environmental pollution is badly affecting the building. The colour of the marble is changing briskly and a noticeable deterioration is appearing. Taj has the craziest attraction on a moon-lit night. It has a very beautiful shining effect in the moonlight.

Visitors are always keen to take photographs of the building. Many Indian visitors try to create some nuisance on the historical buildings. This should be avoided. Taj is a monument for which India can be proud of. Let us keep this precious place neat and clean so that visitors carry a good opinion about it.

With a feeling of contentment, we folded our materials and packed for our return journey. Taj, the great spot of History, was telling in our minds.

The Taj Mahal is surrounded by a beautiful garden. In it tall dark cypress trees grow along the straight walks and fountains play in some places. It has many smooth green lawns and many beds of glowing flowers. All these add to the beauty of the Taj.

The Taj itself stands on the bank of the river Jamuna. It is made of white marble. It has four tall slender white marble minarets, one in each corner of the platform around it, on which the great tomb stands. Look at it from a distance. How small and delicate. Like a fairy palace, it looks! Come nearer, and we find, how large and stately it really is. If we go up the marble steps , and stand close to it, the dome seems to soar high up into the blue sky.

The Taj is built on a high terrace made of marble. We climbed a few steps and saw the big terrace in the centre of which stands the Taj. There are four high towers at the four corners. Now I saw the beauty of the Taj. I never thought of so. There are verses from Quran written in black mosaic at the three sides of the gate. It is really a great work of art. I was puzzled to see its greatness and glory.

Now we went in. there is a board circular gallery all round the building. I was astonished to see the filigree work and carvings in the marble. In the center, there were two tombs of Shahjahan and his dear queen, Mumtaz Mahal. But I came to know that they were not the real tombs. The real tombs we downstairs. We went there and found that they were exactly like the other tombs above. Verses of Quran were written on the tomb of the queen. The slab over emperor was bare. I wondered to see the mosaic work of art on all sides.

It is the result of thousands of laboureres worked for twenty years to build this grand monument of the love of Shahjahan for his queen. Crores of rupees were spent.

It is really a great work of art and India is proud of it. People come down from all countries to see this wonder of wonder. Every part of the building is very attractive in a moon lit night. The Jamuna flowing by adds to its charms.

The sight of the building has made a deep impression. It is delightful to see the Taj at any time of the day. But it is most wonderful to see it in the light of the full moon. At that time it looks like a building of pearl, or a palace made of silver. It looks bright and delicate that it seems to have been made of white clouds. The gleaming white marble, the black shadows , the dim light , the silence, and the sweet scented gardens, all make it a wonderful sight to see. To save Taj Mahal from pollution buses driven by batteries are used from Agra Fort Railway Station to Taj Mahal.

I along with my several school mates visited the Taj Mahal on the full moon day in October this year. The beauty of the Taj is at its peak under the silvery moonlight spreading all over the place and glamorizing the Taj. Its surroundings are well decorated with greenery and flower beds. We felt overjoyed to see the Taj. Hundreds of men, women and children had collected there to enjoy the beauty of the Taj. There were large groups of foreigners clicking their comers. We also posed for photographs.

The Taj is a wonderful dream come true in marble. Its architectural design in superb. It has four mineats on four corners with a onion shaped dome in the centre. Couplets from Koran are engraved beautifully on its walls which is again a wonder of calligraphy. Flowery designs are inset with precious coloured stones. Above all it is made up of spotless white marble. We went down the staircase and visited the graves of the emperor and the empress who lie side by side in their graves over there. Nobody is allowed to go there with shoes on; however, canvas shoes were provided to us by the men on duty outside.

The vision cast a magic spell on me and my friends after seeing it under the full moon that day. We felt that it was a sight fit to be seen by the gods so much inviting the Taj appeared to us that time. The green tufts of grass, and the green shoots of the Cyprus trees adorned its majestic beauty appeared to add to its majestic beauty many times more.

I took objection to a friend’s remarks when he asked what beauty it has but its marble- made heavy structure. He also stated that many Hindu temples in Rajasthan and South India were far more beautiful than The Taj Mahal. I agreed with him that the Rajputana temples were quite beautiful and also the Taj was concerned it has its own unique design and its execution to which he also nodded. Of course, the Taj is supremely beautiful. We felt rewarded after seeing it.

There are many beautiful and worth seeing historical places in India. But the Taj Mahal of Agra is the most beautiful of all. It is a dream in marble. And I can still see the beauty of the Taj with my mind’s eye, if at all 1 desire so. What a great beauty man could create! We now saw the Taj from there. It was a white building made of white marble. We went by paths made of marble slabs. Between these paths there were cistens and fountains. Fish of all colours leaped about in them. There we saw lawns and trees on both the sides.

Now we went in. There is a broad circular gallery all round the building. I was astonished to see the filigree work and carvings in the marble. In the centre, there were two tombs of Shahjahan and his dear queen, Mumtaz Mahal. But I came to know that they were not the real tombs. The real tombs were downstairs. The Taj Mahal is a world famous mausoleum. It is situated on the bank of the river Yamuna near Agra. It was built by the Mughal Emperor Shah jahan in the middle of the seventeenth century.

Shah Jahan built this monument in memory of his beloved wife, Mumtaz Mahal. It is said that more than twenty thousand masons and workers took more than twenty years in building this monument.

The Taj is made of pure white marble. It is one of the wonders of the world. Tagore called it ” a tear frozen on the face of eternity.”

Even after about four centuries when it was built, it has not lost its beauty. When the Mathura Oil Refinery was set up, there was a wide-spread fear about the safety of the glory of the Taj. However, at the instance of the Supreme Court, timely remedial measures were taken.

Before we reach the main building of the Taj, we walk on a path which has tall attractive cypress trees on either side. Behind the cypress trees there are vast luxurious grassy lawns.

There is a large central dome over the main building, having four spiraling minarets on each of the four sides of the building. The graves of Shah Jahan and Mumtaz Mahal lie in a dark chamber beneath the central dome.

Thousands of visitors and tourists visit the Taj annually. It is a sight to see in the moonlight, especially on the full moon night.

I visited the Taj last Monday and I would like to visit it more than once again.

Our school had already announced that we were going to see the Taj Mahal. We were elated and were wondering how thrilling, and exciting this experience would be. We had heard and read about it- there was a full chapter in our history book on Taj Mahal, but now we were about to see it for real.

Our principal and teachers had planned for all of us to visit the Taj Mahal on a full moon night. We were told that on the full moon night the monument looks even more glamorous and glorious, and it makes for a splendid spectacle. This added even more excitement to the previous announcement. We would have had to stay awake the whole night but so what? For such a wonderful experience, it was not a big deal.

We were asked to assemble on a Saturday afternoon at the school campus. We were instructed to carry our packed dinner-boxes and water bottles. We were strictly prohibited from buying any eatables there or littering the Taj Garden’s premises. We were warned against buying the souvenirs from the crafty hawkers. These instructions and warnings were repeated to us over and over again. First by our Principal, then by the respective teachers who were in charge of our groups into which we were divided.

We had brought consent from our parents in writing for this trip. From Delhi to Agra, we had to travel by bus, it was around a 5 hours journey. We assembled at the school campus at the given time, and were divided into groups. The teachers took charge of the respective groups, our teacher in charge asked us to stand in a queue, she called out our names from a list that she carried. The items each one of us was carrying were inspected, and then we went ahead to board the buses.

As we started to move out of the school campus, we all hailed the school with three cheers in a chorus and the journey began. After about 5 hours we were told that we were at The Taj Mahal. The full moon was shining in the sky right above us. The premises seemed like it was filled with the milky hue. We left our buses at a little distance and stepped down. Again, our teachers called out our names from the lists, and we all stood in a straight line. We followed our teacher and walked towards the monument.

After a little while, we were at the main gate of The Taj Mahal. The Taj Mahal glowed in the full moonlight in its grandeur. We all felt wonderstruck by the majesty, beauty, and opulence of the dome structure. The moonlit premises added elegance to the mystique. The Taj Mahal resembled a white swan standing still in a sprawling milk lake. The fountains on the campus were bubbling and bursting along the pathway. The fountains were flanked by the green lawns on either side. It was heavily crowded. Men, women, and children were trying to find a way for themselves. There were so many foreigners looking at the monument like they were totally wonderstruck.

We had to ramble to make it to the main platform, took off our shoes at the entrance, and were up on the main platform on which stood the great monument. The four minarets stood like sentinels on the four corners. After about two hours of wandering and rejoicing around the ‘Dream in Marble’, we came down to the lawns to open our dinner packets. Thereafter, it was time to begin our return journey.

Last Sunday, I visited the Taj Mahal with my family. It was a dream come true for us to have visited the architectural marvel about which we have heard so much and had read so much in our books. We started feeling proud of our country to have this magnificent form of art.

Our history teacher asked us to assemble at a place and started explaining how the Mughal emperor Shahjahan got this monument built as a mausoleum for his beloved queen Mumtaz Mahal. He had stated his desire to be buried by her side after his death. So, there were the two graves inside the mausoleum placed side by side.

We roamed around, kept adoring the astounding beauty, and were amazed at the artistry of the fine carvings. How gifted must those hands be which created that piece of art with so much artistry, we pondered. We looked at the Taj Mahal at one glance and in the second looked at the full moon in the sky. The Taj Mahal looked no less marvellous than the moon in the sky.

River Yamuna flows on the backside of this magnificent monument. It was as if the Yamuna was washing the feet of this marvellous wonder with a full sense of gratitude. For two hours, we went around this monument only rejoicing and wondering.

The Akshaya Var tree was again in my path as I continued walking. This tree's wish-fulfilling well is said to be a popular destination for folklore lovers. Akbar stopped it. The Mughal Governor's (Military Commander's) pavilion, however, was most inviting with Beautiful pillars. They had impeccable taste.

The British decided to demolish a considerable portion of the fort to make place for a school, reducing its beauty. At present, the historic palace is now an arsenal.

Then I went back to Triveni for a swim. I lauded the Ganga's merits after my Allahabad Fort visit. Comparing the old and new forts at Allahabad, it is evident that the old fort at Allahabad is in ruins, while the new fort at Allahabad demonstrates neglect.

Agra is the most populated state in India, which means there are multiple different options for getting here. The fastest route to the Taj Mahal would be to fly. If you're already in India, your best bet is to arrive at Pandit Deen Dayal Upadhyay Airport, in Agra — just over 4 miles from the city center. But if you're coming from outside of the country, the nearest major airport is the Indira Gandhi International Airport in Delhi.

From here, Agra is easy enough to reach by train. You'll want to arrive at Agra Cantt Railway Station, with several superfast, express trains running to and from all the major cities, including Mumbai, Kolkata, and Delhi. If you'd prefer to take the bus, Agra also has a well-developed road network, which you can access from various nearby hubs, including Delhi, Jaipur, and Varanasi. Just make sure you come into the Idgah Bus Stand in Agra — the main bus terminal.

The building process was started almost immediately after her tragic death and took around 20 years to complete. As well as incredible white marble from the Indian state of Rajasthan, materials for the Taj Mahal were sought from all over the world, including turquoise from Tibet, white sapphire from Sri Lanka, and jade imported from China. Around 1,000 elephants were also thought to be involved in the construction process, transporting these special materials across borders, and helping to lay them in place.

When the Taj Mahal was finally finished in 1653, there were rumors that the thousands of laborers who helped create it had their thumbs chopped off, so that no such monument could ever be built again! Whether this holds true or not, the Emperor was also buried here after he died in 1666, alongside his beloved wife.

You Need To Wear Shoe Covers

A visit to the Taj Mahal can feel a little overwhelming and be a lot to take in. So much so that it may be easy to forget it's also a mausoleum — the final resting place of the Emperor and his true love. It's really important to be respectful of the rules around the monument, including covering your shoes when you go into the burial chamber.

While most temples in India require you to take off your shoes completely, the Taj Mahal simply asks tourists to use shoe covers, which are given to you in a fetching light blue shade, at the ticket booth when you arrive. These are used to prevent dust particles from being tracked into the mausoleum and to keep its marble-clad surfaces as shiny and clean as possible. On your way out of the Taj Mahal, be sure to put these disposable shoe covers, and any rubbish that you have, in the trash cans provided. Sadly, the world-famous monument has suffered from plagues of litter in recent years.

Tickets Cost More For International Tourists

Don't be surprised to see that domestic tourists pay much less for the privilege of gawking at the Taj Mahal. Indian citizens are charged 50 rupees (approximately $0.70), while foreign visitors must pay 1,100 rupees ($15.50). You'll need to part with even more money if you want to go inside the mausoleum itself — there's an additional 200 rupee fee ($2.50), but it's worth it. Plus, the foreign tourists' ticket comes with shoe covers, a water bottle, a map, as well as a bus or golf cart service, which takes you to the nearest gate. A real lifesaver in Agra's blistering heat. Bear in mind that your ticket is valid for one visit only, but gives you three blissful hours to explore the Taj Mahal.

If you plan to buy your ticket on-site, there are separate counters for domestic and foreign tourists, so be sure to line up accordingly. Both of these booths are likely to be busy with long, snaking queues, which is why it's sensible to arrive as early in the day as you can. In fact, your best bet is to line up at the South Gate and avoid the very busy East Gate at all costs. Or, simply buy your tickets online beforehand.

You Should Know And Respect The Rules

As a UNESCO World Heritage Site, every visitor must follow certain rules and regulations inside the Taj Mahal, which have been put in place to protect its magnificence. For example, at no point should you touch the marble, or any other material inside the complex, because it could lead to erosion. As it is, each surface needs special, round-the-clock care to ensure its beauty is preserved for future generations.

Littering and smoking are also not allowed within the Taj Mahal, so make sure you do your bit to dispose of empty water bottles, and other trash, in the bins outside. If your entrance ticket allows you into the mausoleum, remember not to take any photos here and to be as quiet and respectful as you can. This houses the tomb of Emperor Shah Jahan and his wife -- for whom thousands of Muslims make the journey each year to pay their respects.

Dress Appropriately

You won't find an enforced dress code for the Taj Mahal, but it's always important to be a respectful tourist when visiting India . So, treat the monument like you would any other temple or mosque on your travels. This means keeping your shoulders and everything above your knees covered, as a sign of respect. Sure, you'll notice some foreigners wearing shorts and tank tops, but don't be swept up in this. It's often seen as disrespectful and will only invite unwanted stares.

The best thing to do is play it safe with longer, flowing trousers to keep you covered and cool, as well as kaftans or shawls to hide your shoulders. For guys, wear an overshirt on your top half and a pair of shorts that ideally go down to your knees, or play it safe with full-length pants. If you're feeling exotic, it's possible to rent traditional Indian clothes for your visit, such as a saree or a kurta pajamabut, but expect to pay extra for the privilege.

Leave These Things At Home

A dress code might not be enforced, per se, but the Taj Mahal has some pretty strict rules about what can be brought into the monument. To save yourself the hassle, avoid carrying a backpack (or anything larger than a small bag), any type of food or drink (even if it's sealed), tobacco products, drones, books, mobile phone chargers, GoPros, headphones, batteries, and tripods. And don't bother trying to sneak any one of these items in, either. The guards at security points really dig through your bag and follow a pretty elaborate frisk procedure for each person.

If you really must have one of these items on you for the day, there are lockers available at the East and West Gates that you can store them in. Having said that, it's much easier just to leave forbidden items at home, so be selective when packing your bag. Bring only your camera and your phone with you, but keep the latter on silent mode in the mausoleum.

Get A Guide

For some of the world's most iconic monuments, it could be seen as a waste of money to hire a tour guide. But not the Taj Mahal. Having an expert at your fingertips will really bring the structure to life for you, with stories, and interesting facts you might not hear otherwise. Not to mention be your own personal photographer, and of course, help you with all the best angles for these pictures. There really isn't much information within the complex itself, so it's a bit of a no-brainer. But where do you find the best guide, and how much should it cost?

If you're staying in a hotel nearby, reception staff usually have good contacts with extremely knowledgeable locals. In most cases, they'll be able to offer you a good deal. Or, you could book directly on a local tour guide website, ensuring your hard-earned money goes to a good home. Expect to pay around 2,000 rupees ($25) for a tour guide per day, but if you just want someone to show you around the monument for three hours, you're looking at somewhere near the 1,500 rupee mark ($18). These prices increase dramatically for the pushy kind of guide who lingers outside the Taj Mahal waiting for tourists. So, it goes without saying — book in advance for less stress on the day itself. If you do decide to go with a guide when you arrive, ask them for an approved identity card before you begin.

Where To Take The Best Pictures

The signature shot of the Taj Mahal (the one doing the rounds on social media) is on the approach from the South Gate. You know the one — with a reflection of its world-famous domes in the turquoise fountain, and the majestic white marble of the mausoleum providing the most perfect of backdrops. But it's nearly impossible to get a clear photo here, without other tourists straying into view. So, take your chance and snap away as soon as you arrive — it'll only get busier later on.

If you can't quite get that quintessential shot at this stage, don't be disheartened. There are plenty of other opportunities. What's more, the Taj Mahal is perfectly symmetrical, providing nearly identical views from multiple vantage points. With this in mind, explore the complex as you go and get creative, looking for new angles. One of the most underrated of these is from the mosque on the west side of the mausoleum. It provides the real money shot, and with far fewer people to contend with, too. Who could say no to red-sandstone scalloped archways, providing the most perfect frame for the undisputed star of the show — the mausoleum? Time it for the break of day at sunrise or just before nightfall at sunset, and you're onto a real winner.

Visit The Other Sites, Too

Sure, the main draw of the Taj Mahal is the ivory-white marble of its mausoleum, but there's an entire complex to explore aside from this, so don't miss out. Start with Chowk-i-Jilo Khana forecourt, which houses the main entrance. It's a stunningly beautiful, arched gateway, topped with delicate domes and adorned with floral designs. Next, make your way to the Charbagh, which means four gardens. Prepare yourself for breathtaking views as you walk through Chowk-i-Jilo Khana gateway and into this tranquil space, split into four quadrants by waterways. These gardens are reminiscent of the Koranic description of Paradise — rivers flowing with water, milk, wine, and honey — and a classic sign of the Mughal era.

As you keep moving, you'll come across the aforementioned red-sandstone mosque on the west side, and a perfect replica of it on the east side. This completes the architectural symmetry of the complex and provides a few alternative vantage points for photos. Lastly, if you have time, take in the museum, which is open between 10:30 a.m. and 5 p.m. It's brimming with exquisite miniature paintings, two marble pillars believed to have come from nearby Agra Fort, and portraits of Mughal rulers. This includes those of Emperor Shah Jahan and Mumtaz Mahal, lying in the mausoleum just a few steps away.

Expect Photo Requests

If you've explored other parts of India, you'll be well-equipped to deal with it by now. But if the Taj Mahal is your first stop in this truly magnificent country, prepare for a multitude of photo requests. This is especially true if you're tall, have pale skin, and fair hair — characteristics that tend to draw a lot of attention. From whole family photos to couples pictures, locals and Indian tourists will likely be very excited to see you in their country, and may even queue up for their chance to take a snap with you.

Unsurprisingly, this can become quite tiring, not to mention take you away from the experience at hand. But 9 times out of 10, these requests come with no malice, so don't be afraid. In fact, it's seen as a gesture of friendship. If this sounds a little strange to you, it may help to understand that many Indians don't have much exposure to fair-skinned foreigners, or may never have traveled outside India before. Having said this, it's perfectly fine to politely refuse, if you're not comfortable. Otherwise, get stuck in and enjoy meeting plenty of friendly and enthusiastic locals.

Where To Stay In Agra

It's common for tourists to visit Agra on a day trip from Delhi. But just because it's possible, doesn't mean it's the best use of time. For one thing, it makes visiting the Taj Mahal for sunrise or sunset a tall order — and you don't want to miss that. So, if time allows, try to stay at least one night in Agra to make the most of this very special monument. From budget guesthouses to royal suites with unbeatable views of the Taj, it may be comforting to know that Agra has no shortage of places to lay your head with options to suit every budget.

Taj Ganj is one of the best spots in the city, perched right next to the Taj Mahal itself. In fact, it's the closest area that you can stay to the structure, offering a range of hotels, guesthouses, and hostels. It's also a popular spot for restaurants, with a rich dining hub serving North Indian and Mughlai cuisine. The area is also dotted with craft shops selling carved Taj Mahal replicas, marble inlay work, and semi-precious stones. If you're looking for something fancier, journey just a short distance away to Fatehabad Road. This area is renowned for its upscale hotels and plush, luxury resorts, many of which offer breathtaking views of the monument from deluxe suite rooms and rooftop restaurant terraces.

The Old Church of Dunlewey in Co Donegal

The Old Church of Dunlewey, in County Donegal, much like the Taj Mahal, is a lasting memorial to a great love affair.

Two hundred years after the Taj Mahal, one of the Seven Wonders of the World which was commissioned in 1632 by the Mughal emperor, Shah Jahan, to house the tomb of his favorite wife, Mumtaz Mahal, a woman erected her own monument to devotion, love, and loss in County Donegal.

Lying silently at the foot of Mount Errigal , the tallest of the Derryveagh Mountain range and the largest in Donegal, is the stunning ruin of the Old Church of Dunlewey. A beautiful building that is a lasting memorial to a great love affair between James Russell, the landlord of the Dunlewey estate, and his wife Jane.

James Russell married Jane Smith in 1825 and they set up married life in London. James would go on to make a fortune as a hop merchant. The couple was blessed with five daughters: Fannie, Henrietta, Emma, Louisa Sarah, and Josephine.

Using the wealth they had acquired in London, the couple decided to leave England and purchase the Dunlewey estate, an area of sheep, lakes and outstanding natural beauty with the wild Atlantic to the west and the Derryveagh Mountains to the East.

The estate is recorded as consisting of a house, outbuildings, gate lodges and 3825 acres of land, a large holding by the standards of the day.

Little is written of their time in Dunlewey, but James died on the 2nd of September 1848. Heartbroken, his widow decided to build the church as a monument for her husband.

Like the Taj Mahal, the Church of Ireland building was constructed using white marble and also blue quartzite which was quarried locally.

The supply of marble in the nearby quarry has now been depleted. The red brick in the arches of the windows was produced locally. Remnants of the brickfield are still visible near Oilean Ghrainne when the level of the lake is lowered.

James Russell was laid to rest in a vault under the church floor.

Folklore and The Old Church of Dunlewey

On Sept 1, 1853, the Church was consecrated as a chapel of Ease to the Church of Ireland in Tullaghbegley which was the parish consisting of the modern-day parishes of Gweedore and Cloughaneely.

The church is nestled in the valley between Errigal and the Poison Glen, an area of stunning beauty and with a long history.

One story is that the wrong translation from Irish to English caused confusion and the correct name should be ‘Heavenly Glen’ (the Irish word for Heaven is 'neamh' and the Irish word for poison is 'neimhe').

One other reason could be that the Poisoned Glen owes its name to the former presence of the highly toxic Irish Spurge Moss. It is rumored that the plant poisoned the drinking water and thankfully the Spurge Moss is now extinct here.

I prefer to think folklore has given the glen its ominous name. The story from lore is that the one-eyed king of Tory, Balor of the evil eye, had a beautiful daughter Ethniu who he kept closed away in a tower out of men’s view.

This was because he had been forewarned that only his grandson could end his life.

However, word of her beauty spread and she was kidnapped and brought to the nearby mainland at Magheroarty.

Balor in a fury followed and caught up with her kidnappers at the entrance to the glen. He rescued his daughter and killed her kidnapper with a giant stone.

To this day one such stone stands in the glen and is said by locals to be the poisoned eye of Balor who has given his name to the glen where the old church of Dunlewey now lies.

The deterioration and restoration of The Old Church of Dunlewey

With emigration and the decline in the Dunlewey estate, the population eroded as did the congregation of the Dunlewey church. Gradually neglect and the elements took their toll.

In 1955, the roof had deteriorated to such an extent that it was decided to remove it as a safety measure. The fixtures and fitting of the church were distributed to other churches throughout the Church of Ireland diocese of Derry and Raphoe. The bell was also removed and is now installed in the Cashel Church of Ireland near Doe Castle.

In 1987, the local community restored the floor. In 2005, half a century after the roof was removed, restoration work was undertaken to ensure that this beautiful and historic landmark was preserved for future generations.

The poignancy of the church did not end with the grief of Jane Russell. Another landlord of the estate, Richard Lewis Crankshaw who died on the 29th of November 1929, is buried on the grounds of the Old Church of Dunlewey without his wife.

His widow Nellie was a Roman Catholic and when she died in 1946 she was buried in the graveyard of the Sacred Heart church which lies just across the lake in sight of the Old Church.

If you visit the Sacred Heart church you will see one gravestone turned towards the Old Church of Dunlewey - that’s Mary Crankshaw who wished to be buried in sight of her husband facing his grave. The other headstones point away from the Old Church.

So when you are in the Goath Diobhair area make sure to visit the Donegal Taj Mahal, a monument to love and loss, the Old Church of Dunlewey.
