Dr Fatemeh Salehi is the Academic Lead for Sustainability at the Faculty of Science and Engineering and an Associate Professor at the School of Engineering, Macquarie University. Her expertise is in the development of physical models for computational fluid dynamic simulations of single- and multi-phase flows to advance sustainable energy technologies. Her team is particularly interested in computational modelling and optimisation techniques to scale the safe and efficient applications of clean fuels such as hydrogen, ammonia, and biomass. Her research in the field of hydrogen application has been recognised in the NSW Hydrogen Strategy published by the NSW Government, Australia in 2021. Dr Salehi is a Fulbright alumni, an International Hydrogen Fellow, an executive member of the Combustion Institute, a member of the Scientific Advisory Board of Blue Economy Corporative Research Centre, and a member of Working Groups of Standards Australia for the development of hydrogen standards. She is also a recipient of the NSW Young Tall Poppy Award, the Maria Skyllas-Kazacos Early Career Award, the Australasian Fluid Mechanics Society Emerging Leaders Award, and the Bilger Early Career Researcher Award.

Seminar: “Hydrogen: challenges and opportunities – an Australian perspective”

Abstract:  Hydrogen is a potential energy solution to address global warming, climate change, and energy security challenges. It can create a practical pathway to replace fossil fuels and move toward net-zero targets in the transport, heavy industries, and energy sectors. Various hydrogen strategies and industry roadmaps have been developed to identify key goals, set targets for progress, and develop strategic plans to address challenges such as high costs associated with production, storage, operation, and maintenance systems, as well as concerns about safety, reliability, and regulatory approvals. This talk provides an overview of hydrogen challenges and opportunities from an Australian perspective and discusses some key safety concerns in scaling hydrogen.

Villitis is characterized by the presence of inflammatory infiltrate (CD8 lymphocyte) in the placental villous and is classified as to the etiology in known and unknown. In most cases, villitis is idiopathic (villitis of unknown etiology [VUE]) because no microorganisms are evident and there are no maternal symptoms or signs. It has recently been proposed that pregnancy is, in fact, an active and highly regulated immune process in which macrophages play an important role. Macrophages may present with M1 phenotype, important effector cells, or M2 phenotype, capable of suppressing the function of M1 macrophages and influencing immunoregulation and tissue repair. CD68 antibody recognizes macrophages M1 and M2, whereas CD11c and CD163 antibodies are specific for the identification only of M1 and M2 macrophages, respectively. The objective of our study is to characterize in human placentas in the subpopulation of M1 and M2 macrophages in VUE.

Sixteen cases of chronic villitis (all without an identifiable etiologic agent) and three control placentas were examined using immunohistochemistry with antibodies for CD68, CD11c, CD163, and CD3.

CD68 and CD163 were present in all cases in the normal areas. CD68, CD163, and CD11c were present in the villous stroma and in the intervillous space in the inflamed areas. The percentage of CD68-positive macrophages was higher than CD163- and CD11c-positive macrophages in all specimens studied. A total increase of CD68, CD163, and CD11c with the predominance of CD11c over CD163 in the inflamed areas was observed.

The predominance of M1 macrophages (CD11c) in the inflamed areas suggests the influence of these cells in the pathogenesis VUE. The higher amount of M2 (CD163) in the inflamed villous compared to normal areas suggests a possible immunoregulatory mechanism of the inflammatory process in VUE.

Background: Brazilian opportunistic screening programs for cervical cancer have limited impact. In the regions of two cities (Campinas and Curitiba) with high human development indices, consistent information from 96-97% of all cervical cancer cases managed within the public healthcare system is available.

Objective: To estimate the incidence rate (IR) and temporal trends in these regions, covering 2001-2012.

Design and setting: A population-based cohort study was conducted under the assumption that all cervical cancer cases were managed in cancer referral center hospitals.

Methods: 3,364 records (1,646 from Campinas; 1,718 from Curitiba) were analyzed to provide estimates of IR, age-standardized IR (ASR) and cervical cancer trends (shown per 100,000 women/year). Longitudinal patterns were analyzed using linear regression and shown as annual percentage change (APC); P < 0.05 for significance.

Results: Annual IR and ASR estimates for cervical cancer ranged from 3.8 to 8.0 over 2001-2012, decreasing over more recent years, and were similar for the two regions. The age-specific IR was about 50% lower among women aged 45 years or older (IR-2001/IR-2012: Campinas = 14.8/8.0; Curitiba = 18.7/8.3; P < 0.001). There was an increasing APC trend in Campinas among women aged 15-24 years, and a decreasing IR trend for squamous-cell histology in both regions (P < 0.05).

Conclusion: Cervical cancer incidence estimates showed slowly decreasing trends in both regions, most evidently for women aged 45 years or older and for squamous-cell histology. These findings reflect the opportunistic nature of the population screening program, despite the comparatively high economic development level in the two regions.

  11. Considering an MD-PhD program? Here's what you should know

Cost of attendance. Most MD-PhD programs grant entrants tuition-free training. In addition, most students in those tracks earn a stipend, which according to the AAMC report, can be as high as $38,000 annually. Harvey believes that the potential savings on education shouldn't be your top motivation for entering an MD-PhD program.
