In late October 2022, Elon Musk officially took Twitter private and became the company’s majority shareholder, finally ending a months-long acquisition saga. He appointed himself CEO and brought in his own team to clean house. Musk needed to take decisive steps to succeed against the major opposition to his leadership from both inside and outside the company. Twitter employees circulated an open letter protesting expected layoffs, advertising agencies advised their clients to pause spending on Twitter, and EU officials considered a broader Twitter ban. What short-term actions should Musk take to stabilize the situation, and how should he approach long-term strategy to turn around Twitter? The Opioid Crisis, CEO Pay, and Shareholder Activism

In 2020, AmerisourceBergen Corporation, a Fortune 50 company in the drug distribution industry, agreed to settle thousands of lawsuits filed nationwide against the company for its opioid distribution practices, which critics alleged had contributed to the opioid crisis in the US. The $6.6 billion global settlement caused a net loss larger than the cumulative net income earned during the tenure of the company’s CEO, which began in 2011. In addition, AmerisourceBergen’s legal and financial troubles were accompanied by shareholder demands aimed at driving corporate governance changes in companies in the opioid supply chain. Determined to hold the company’s leadership accountable, the shareholders launched a campaign in early 2021 to reject the pay packages of executives. Should the board reduce the executives’ pay, as of means of improving accountability? Or does punishing the AmerisourceBergen executives for paying the settlement ignore the larger issue of a business’s responsibility to society? Harvard Business School professor Suraj Srinivasan discusses executive compensation and shareholder activism in the context of the US opioid crisis in his case, “The Opioid Settlement and Controversy Over CEO Pay at AmerisourceBergen.”

A Rose by Any Other Name: Supply Chains and Carbon Emissions in the Flower Industry

Headquartered in Kitengela, Kenya, Sian Flowers exports roses to Europe. Because cut flowers have a limited shelf life and consumers want them to retain their appearance for as long as possible, Sian and its distributors used international air cargo to transport them to Amsterdam, where they were sold at auction and trucked to markets across Europe. But when the Covid-19 pandemic caused huge increases in shipping costs, Sian launched experiments to ship roses by ocean using refrigerated containers. Top 10 MBAs for Research Excellence and Impact

Top 10 MBAs for Research Excellence and Impact

Prospective MBA students seldom look into the research rank of their target schools, but this is a missed opportunity. After all, research is what drives the public reputation of the institution and it contributes to its position in key league tables. This means research, while secondary to teaching in the eyes of most MBA students, plays a key role in attracting the best and brightest students, professors, staff and recruiters to business school.

Traditionally, research rankings have been based on the number of articles published in the top academic journals, but there is a growing recognition that research must have more practical relevance and deliver more genuine societal impact. Research not only informs MBA teaching in the classroom and forms the bedrock of case study and curriculum design, but can also lead to the development of patents, changes in policy, or grants awarded.

In short, research can help improve society and business, and this will appeal increasingly to MBA students, many of whom are placing sustainability on a par with financial gain. Here are the top 10 schools for research impact and excellence.

Measured purely by output in journals, Washington University: Olin is ranked top for research worldwide by the FT. But the school's research also informs and invigorates classroom teaching, and aims to improve the business results of its participants and graduates. Examples include how companies can tackle the gender pay gap and create a higher purpose.

Chicago - Booth

Chicago Booth scores highly for pure research output, but its insights into entrepreneurship, marketing, social impact, artificial intelligence and more have a lasting impact in business, culture and society. The papers from the school’s Nobel Prize-winning faculty enrich the educational experience, expand the school’s global reach, and keep alumni connected to the Booth community.

INSEAD - Europe Campus

Insead is ranked highly for its research excellence, whether academic publications, books, cases or practitioner-focused articles. Washington - Foster

The University of Washington’s Foster School of Business has a strong reputation for faculty and research. The school aims to combine scientific research with teaching innovations to strengthen learning outcomes for MBA students. The school’s 300-strong faculty body has picked up numerous teaching, research and business awards. It has produced research with practical significance to boost business results, for instance how social capital improves financial returns, and how to achieve a better work/life balance.

Northwestern - Kellogg

Research is a core component of Kellogg’s mission and culture. Several leading journals were founded at Kellogg, but faculty also bring research expertise into the classroom. For instance, Kellogg pioneered the study of negotiations and teamwork in management. More recently, it is working to identify and understand the larger social issues that business leaders must navigate.

London Business School (LBS)

London Business School boasts a strong reputation for research that advances teaching and provides insights for business leaders and governments. Sat / act prep online guides and tips, 113 great research paper topics.

General Education

feature_pencilpaper

One of the hardest parts of writing a research paper can be just finding a good topic to write about. Fortunately we've done the hard work for you and have compiled a list of 113 interesting research paper topics. They've been organized into ten categories and cover a wide range of subjects so you can easily find the best topic for you.

In addition to the list of good research topics, we've included advice on what makes a good research paper topic and how you can use your topic to start writing a great paper.

What Makes a Good Research Paper Topic?

Not all research paper topics are created equal, and you want to make sure you choose a great topic before you start writing. Below are the three most important factors to consider to make sure you choose the best research paper topics.

#1: It's Something You're Interested In

A paper is always easier to write if you're interested in the topic, and you'll be more motivated to do in-depth research and write a paper that really covers the entire subject. Even if a certain research paper topic is getting a lot of buzz right now or other people seem interested in writing about it, don't feel tempted to make it your topic unless you genuinely have some sort of interest in it as well.

#2: There's Enough Information to Write a Paper

Even if you come up with the absolute best research paper topic and you're so excited to write about it, you won't be able to produce a good paper if there isn't enough research about the topic. This can happen for very specific or specialized topics, as well as topics that are too new to have enough research done on them at the moment. Easy research paper topics will always be topics with enough information to write a full-length paper.

Trying to write a research paper on a topic that doesn't have much research on it is incredibly hard, so before you decide on a topic, do a bit of preliminary searching and make sure you'll have all the information you need to write your paper.

#3: It Fits Your Teacher's Guidelines

Don't get so carried away looking at lists of research paper topics that you forget any requirements or restrictions your teacher may have put on research topic ideas. If you're writing a research paper on a health-related topic, deciding to write about the impact of rap on the music scene probably won't be allowed, but there may be some sort of leeway. For example, if you're really interested in current events but your teacher wants you to write a research paper on a history topic, you may be able to choose a topic that fits both categories, like exploring the relationship between the US and North Korea. No matter what, always get your research paper topic approved by your teacher first before you begin writing.

113 Good Research Paper Topics

Below are 113 good research topics to help you get you started on your paper. We've organized them into ten categories to make it easier to find the type of research paper topics you're looking for.

How to Write a Great Research Paper

Even great research paper topics won't give you a great research paper if you don't hone your topic before and during the writing process. Follow these three tips to turn good research paper topics into great papers.

#1: Figure Out Your Thesis Early

Before you start writing a single word of your paper, you first need to know what your thesis will be. Your thesis is a statement that explains what you intend to prove/show in your paper. Every sentence in your research paper will relate back to your thesis, so you don't want to start writing without it!

As some examples, if you're writing a research paper on if students learn better in same-sex classrooms, your thesis might be "Research has shown that elementary-age students in same-sex classrooms score higher on standardized tests and report feeling more comfortable in the classroom."

If you're writing a paper on the causes of the Civil War, your thesis might be "While the dispute between the North and South over slavery is the most well-known cause of the Civil War, other key causes include differences in the economies of the North and South, states' rights, and territorial expansion."

#2: Back Every Statement Up With Research

Remember, this is a research paper you're writing, so you'll need to use lots of research to make your points. Every statement you give must be backed up with research, properly cited the way your teacher requested. You're allowed to include opinions of your own, but they must also be supported by the research you give.

#3: Do Your Research Before You Begin Writing

You don't want to start writing your research paper and then learn that there isn't enough research to back up the points you're making, or, even worse, that the research contradicts the points you're trying to make!

Get most of your research on your good research topics done before you begin writing. Then use the research you've collected to create a rough outline of what your paper will cover and the key points you're going to make. This will help keep your paper clear and organized, and it'll ensure you have enough research to produce a strong paper.

What purpose do mba essay topics serve.

MBA essay topics are meant to elicit what makes you the perfect candidate for an MBA and for the specific business program you are applying to. Your essay should convince the admissions committee that you have what it takes to be successful in an MBA program, based on personal, academic, and work experience, and that you are the right fit for the class. Whether you are writing an MBA personal statement , a statement of purpose, or another type of essay, your essay should tell the story of the steps you took to end up here. MBA essay topics also highlight the mission, core values, and priorities of the business school. Because business schools are all quite different, tailor your essay to emphasize the curricula and teaching approach that appeals to you in the school’s philosophy of business education and research.

A Master of Business Administration is a highly sought-after credential. Admission to this challenging program is competitive, and the application process, like the MBA itself, is demanding. Business schools are seeking leaders, not followers, and the MBA essay is your opportunity to demonstrate how you measure up. The admissions committee will be keen to understand your background and aspirations and how you see yourself fitting in and contributing to the MBA program. Finally, they will be looking for proof of your self-assessment abilities and business acumen.

The key to acing MBA essay topics you encounter is to remember that everything you include in the essays must inevitably link back to the questions “Why MBA?” and “What makes you right for our MBA program?” We will discuss other important themes below, but as an MBA applicant, all your application components must in some way answer these important questions.

New MBA essay topics are typically published on business schools’ websites in May and June with their updated admissions requirements. However, as we already mentioned, many of the themes remain the same, even if the exact wording of the prompt changes. This is why you can start brainstorming and preparing for common essay topics long before you have to actually submit!

MBA programs may have rolling admissions or deadlines. Several business schools have three application rounds per year. The first round will be in September/October for admission in the fall semester of the following year; in other words, you are applying a full year before you hope to start the program, and your MBA essay is due when you submit your application.

What Format Do MBA Essay Topics Take?

There is a huge variety of formats your MBA essay may take. Some business schools require just an MBA letter of intent or personal statement, but most require one or more essays in different formats. MBA essay topics may be in written, multimedia, and/or video format. For example, John Molson School of Business requires a 500-word MBA statement of purpose and a video interview. Rotman School of Management asks that you include 1–3 images in your application based on their “spike factor”: life experiences that “demonstrate passion, grit, resilience, innovation, drive, ambition,” or other qualities. In addition to a 1,000-word essay, they require a 2-question video interview response with a timed 10-min. written response component. As part of their required essay package, NYU Stern asks you to describe yourself using their “Pick Six” method (six images with an introduction and corresponding captions in a PDF).

These divergent approaches underscore that you should research your preferred business schools carefully. You will see from our list of 10 of the top business schools’ MBA essay topics below that they are all quite different!

An MBA video essay or interview uses a third-party platform, such as Kira Talent , to enable you to introduce yourself and/or verbally respond to a prompt. It serves the same purpose as a written essay, but your answers must usually be much more concise. This requirement should not be mistaken for the interview extended by invitation only if the admissions committee decides to advance you in the application process! That is a separate step.

An MBA video essay, like an interview, is designed to assess your verbal communication skills as well as your ability to pitch yourself and think on your feet. It also helps the admissions committee evaluate how you might contribute to classroom discussions or teamwork. Kellogg Business School is one top b-school which requires an MBA video essay as part of its application.

Still working on your resume?

How Do I Submit my MBA Video Essay?

Depending on the business school, you will record your video essay either via a link provided on the admissions page as part of the application requirements, or via a link sent to you after you submit your application. It is important to review the admissions page and make sure you understand the submission process.

The topics and instructions for video essays may appear on the admissions page, along with those for other required MBA essays, or they may only be provided once you access the link. In that case, there may be an option to test the platform and practice some questions before the actual recording. However, certain schools, such as Smith School of Business, present random questions in real time “designed to be answered without advance preparation … highlighting how quickly and concisely you can formulate an answer.”

You will be expected to complete any MBA video essay requirements independently, and your application will not be complete until you submit the video essay.

Required vs Optional MBA Essay Topics

With MBA essay topics, “required” vs “optional” also has diverse meanings! One essay topic may be required for first-time applicants, but it may be optional for reapplicants. Each business school may also have a different definition of a reapplicant. For example, if you applied to the MBA program within the last two years, you may be a reapplicant; however, if it has been three or more years, you may be considered a new applicant. It is essential to check which category you fit into and confirm the MBA essay topics and types that apply to you.

For reapplicants, the objective of an optional essay is usually to find out what you have done or what has changed (career moves, test scores) since your last application; in other words, why you are more worthy of admission now. Further, like many other graduate schools, MBA programs may provide the opportunity for applicants to explain any extenuating circumstances in an optional essay. In all cases, we recommend taking advantage of the optional essay to make your application stand out, unless doing so would go against the rules/requirements.

The following list outlines what you can expect in terms of essay requirements this year for admission to 10 top business schools in the United States and Canada. This list includes the name of the school and associated university/location as well as MBA essay topics, submission format, required length, and some examples of good responses.

2. Chicago Booth

The University of Chicago Booth School of Business

Notice that Booth wants to see what exactly attracts you to their program and why they would be a good fit with your goals. Schools often want to know why you chose them specifically. Did you do your research? Or are you applying blindly? For example, Booth has The Chicago Approach, which refers to a framework developed in-house by pioneering faculty in the 1950s–60s and which continues to evolve and inform their educational direction. This multidisciplinary framework, integrating economics, accounting, sociology, statistics, and psychology, aims to teach students how to think analytically to “define problems, ask better questions, and develop better solutions.”
What are you really being asked here?
What are you really being asked here?"}]" code="tab2" template="BlogArticle">

Example for Essay Topic 1: “How will a Booth MBA help you achieve your immediate and long-term post-MBA career goals?”

Eight years ago, after earning my M.S. in Business Analytics from Franklin University, I partnered with two alumni in a startup venture. TechCapital’s mission is to assess technology needs of companies looking to retrofit their older plants. We act as an intermediary between investors and companies to structure, implement, and manage the retrofitting contract. Our unique business model has proven to be highly successful, and we guarantee significant ROI once operations begin.

Columbus, Ohio, has since come to be known as the Midwest’s “tech capital.” Recent investment in startups is booming. We launched three newly retrofitted enterprises, all representative of key industries: advanced manufacturing, logistics, and insurance. Moreover, we have tripled in size and expanded our core departments: consulting, business analytics, and contracting. Sensing that we are at the cusp of real growth, I know the time is right to step up my game.

With its reputation for innovation, impactful research, and transformative knowledge, the prestigious Booth Weekend MBA Program is my first choice for fulfilling a lifelong ambition. I certainly fit the profile of a high-potential professional seeking to rise to the next level. The Chicago Approach aligns perfectly with my analytical sensibility, as confirmed by attendance at several Roundtables and Student Panels. I am eager to learn from talented peers and an exceptional faculty. Finally, I look forward to building my professional network and ultimately establishing a second TechCapital in Chicago to share lessons learned and implement the novel, creative, and sustainable business solutions our company has pursued.

Notice that Darden wants to see authentic responses based on your own perspective and experiences. They note, “How you choose to answer a particular question is often as insightful as what you choose to write about.” They will be looking for evidence that their specific approach resonates with you and that you have a clear idea of what you will contribute as a unique individual. Known for its practical application of business knowledge based on research, Darden emphasizes learning by doing. So, they also expect a “show, don’t tell” approach to their essays, which is a good general strategy for writing most types of admissions essays.
What are you really being asked about?
What are you really being asked about?"}]" code="tab3" template="BlogArticle">

Example for Essay Topic 2: “Please describe a tangible example that illuminates your experience promoting an inclusive environment and what you would bring to creating an inclusive global community at Darden.”

My first small business experience taught me valuable lessons about customer service and marketing but also about leadership and learning style. I hope to be able to share these insights with my peers at Darden.

To pay for my college tuition, I used to offer summer art classes in my backyard to neighborhood kids. I later expanded my activities by renting a small studio space. Yet, when my students went back to school, my client base shrank. To cover the rent, I offered a seniors’ promotion, and soon every hour not dedicated to my own studies was spent in the studio. It wasn’t an immediate success, however. My students weren’t happy!

In time, I got my answer. One student, expecting a lecture style as value for money, complained, “That’s not teaching.” Another contradicted them, saying, “You’re just telling, not showing.” Someone else said, “This project hurts my hands too much.”

With the kids, I recognized that they all had different needs, based on their ages, abilities, and interests, but I had assumed that my seniors would be a homogenous group. How wrong I was! To be successful, I had to address their different learning styles and expectations as well as any issues with vision, hearing, or fine-motor skills. I had to adapt my approach to each person while still presenting a coherent lesson. I had to recognize that even with adults, there is no single, correct approach.

I do have a passion for engaging with people, and I am a problem-solver by nature, but today, I take the time to better understand others’ perspectives. As a student at Darden, I will seek to connect with my peers and facilitate knowledge sharing. Perhaps most importantly, I will be prepared to challenge preconceptions and help others see things through someone else’s eyes.

4. Desautels

McGill University Desautels Faculty of Management

Desautels describes its business education as non-traditional and professes to recognize the diverse skillset, vision, and range of backgrounds of its applicants. As flexible specializations are offered to allow you to customize your degree, your essays should also reflect a clear sense of your own direction and objectives. Skills taught at Desautels that may differ from other MBA programs include financial technology, data analysis, AI, and design thinking. Duke Fuqua School of Business, Duke University

For all business schools, the importance of an MBA essay should not be underestimated, yet Fuqua’s requirements are extensive and specific. It is important to note the different word limits and details for each type of essay. For example, the first short-answer question is intended to be concise and informative, with a strong message. The second text is intended to be a list, not a dissertation; it should emphasize those experiences that you consider the most relevant, while respecting the word count and page limit. The third should focus on what you know about Fuqua and how you envision enriching the school. Given the range of formats, each essay necessarily showcases your writing skills, attention to detail, and ability to follow directions. The overall result should impress the admissions committee with your knowledge of the school and of yourself. University of Western Ontario

They wish to discern how the school and MBA program will complement your immediate plans and how well you can elaborate your ambitions. Example for Essay Topic 2: Decision “Tell us about a challenge you have faced in your life, and what lessons you learned from it.”

Our firm recently went through a merger, and a major challenge was to agree on production restructuring. While our plant included a range of manufacturing processes, the other firm’s three plants were specialized. To address the bottleneck, I met with the director of that company and key personnel. It soon became clear that what was needed was not a complete reorganization of the infrastructure but rather, a creative restructuring of teams. We took advantage of the change to close one floor in our plant that had aging equipment and reorganize the warehouse. In the process, we added a fourth production facility, turned the defunct production floor into office and meeting spaces, expanded the cafeteria, and reclaimed the yard for a staff garden. We also created an innovation hub to regroup senior technicians from each firm and interns from local schools. While this represented a massive challenge, respectful, open communication between the two management teams with input from staff at all levels enabled buy-in and consensus. In fact, the process seemed to energize the new firm. Although initially resistant, the employees recognized the benefits: a safer, cleaner, more pleasant work environment with efficient equipment. This experience was formative for me in terms of conflict mediation. It also showed me that value can be generated from potentially negative circumstances. The new firm has surpassed all its targets, and our HR team can hardly keep up with response to our job postings.

Stephen M. Ross School of Business, University of Michigan, Ann Arbor

By these essay topic choices, Ross is looking for concise, powerful statements that accurately and honestly describe your character and skills. As none of these essays is more than 150 words, it is essential to present the most significant experiences from your background that are the most relevant in the context of this business school.
What are they really asking?
What are they really asking?"}]" code="tab7" template="BlogArticle">

Example for Essay Topic 3: “Pick one thing from your resume and tell us more.”

My internship with Agrivesta was memorable. With my interest and experience in organic farming, I felt prepared for my role as assistant production manager in this small local startup. However, a major flood changed everything. Suddenly, I had to assume management responsibilities to help coordinate the emergency response and insurance claims. All of us had to pitch in and think on our feet to arrange vet care and alternative shelter for animals. We moved the store to safely sell off produce and maintain the revenue stream. This experience showed me that I can handle pressure, take responsibility, and act autonomously.

New York University

It also offers dual degrees: the JD/MBA, MD/MBA, MFA/MBA, and many others. As part of your responses to the essay topics, it would be important to discuss both sides when applying to one of these unique options not offered elsewhere. Examples for Essay Topic: “Change _________ it.”

9. Tepper School of Business

Carnegie Mellon University

Tepper is looking for evidence of how you can personally contribute to the business school’s mission, values, and diversity. To assess this, they are seeking original stories, evidence of recent advancement, and the ability to overcome setbacks. Their STEM-designated program incorporates management science with expertise in technology, engineering, and mathematics. Therefore, your MBA essay responses should balance your understanding and appreciation of the school culture and your facility in the focus subject areas.
What are they really asking for?
What are they really asking for?"}]" code="tab9" template="BlogArticle">

Example for Required Reapplicant Essay Topic: “Explain how your candidacy has strengthened since your last application.”

I applied to the full-time MBA at Tepper School of Business two years ago, but unfortunately, I was not accepted. In seeking feedback from Tepper’s admissions services, I learned that my work experience was not considered extensive enough and that my TOEFL and IELTS scores were too low. While my speaking skills are strong, I struggled with the written component, as my studies were undertaken in Spanish in my native Bogotá, Columbia. I believe a related issue was my decision to take both the TOEFL and IELTS, to meet the requirements of my three preferred MBA programs in the United States. Although I prepared extensively for these two exams, without exposure to much specialized vocabulary in my work environment, I had few opportunities to apply my knowledge or practice my skills. Further, I realize now that I rushed the application process due to my excitement at obtaining my F-1 student visa. Nine months did not allow me enough time to adequately prepare both exams as well as fulfil all the other requirements and maintain my performance in my high-level position in human resources.

However, in the meantime, I was accepted to the MBA program at Universidad de los Andes and have just completed my third part-time semester. I was also promoted to the position of assistant director of our firm’s Bogotá branch after three years as an HR associate and four years as department manager. Last summer, I was offered a two-month internship at our sister office in Pittsburgh to engage in the joint exercise of reconciling our reporting, data management, SOP documentation, and other protocols to be able to expand our international market. This immersion experience, which involved considerable translation between Spanish and English alongside bilingual peers, was exactly what I needed to bring both my written and spoken English up to a professional level. In fact, my recent TOEFL score was 105. My IELTS scores were an especially gratifying personal best: Listening: 9, Reading: 7, Writing: 8, Speaking: 9. In writing, I gained a full 3 points.

I have therefore decided to reapply for the Tepper MBA but in the part-time online hybrid stream. I believe this to be a reasonable choice, given my advancement and responsibilities at our firm. The recent rapprochement of our offices in the two countries means that I will be able to travel freely between them. I know that the excellent leadership and analytical training I will receive at Tepper in its STEM-designated MBA will enable me to streamline the Pittsburgh office and develop our Bogotá branch to an unprecedented high level. In fact, our management science-based approach is what sets our HR services apart in that city, and this is precisely why I have returned to re-apply to Tepper—and only Tepper—as it is the ideal environment in which to advance my leadership skills as a new director and ensure that our firm has access to the most advanced business analysis available. Finally, and most importantly, I believe my persistence demonstrates my commitment to and interest in the school as well as my ambition. I am certain my contribution, enriched by recent experiences, will be significant, both academically and among the international student body.

An MBA essay is intended to show the admissions committee why you are a perfect candidate for MBA and their program specifically. It also serves to introduce you and complement your application by providing additional information about your background, career experience, aptitude to succeed in a challenging MBA program, business acumen, and motivation.

Certain business schools tend to change their MBA essay topics each year, while others use the same or similar topics to the previous year. The business school may seek to compare applicants to the previous cohort or focus on current priorities that match their unique philosophy of business education and research.

MBA essay topics are usually announced in May and June for applications starting in the fall for the following academic year.

You can start any time to research business schools, look at the types of MBA essay topics they post, visit the campus, attend events, make inquiries, connect with alumni, make notes, and write drafts. Then, when the topic is announced, you will be ready to write your MBA essay. Give yourself around 6–8 weeks to finalize your essays.

MBA essay topics may be presented as a letter of intent, personal statement, written essay, short answer questions, multimedia presentation, or video essay. One or more essays may be required in different formats. A wide range of formats is used by different business schools.

An MBA video essay is different from an interview, but it may take the form of responses to interview-type questions, such as “tell us about yourself” or “ why do you want to pursue an MBA ?”. It should not be mistaken for the by invitation only interview, which is a separate step. Some MBA video essay topics are proposed in advance in the admissions requirements, while others may be presented via a platform as random questions to which you must respond in real time.

The MBA video essay is part of the application package and must be submitted when you apply or via a link sent to you shortly after you apply.

If you are a reapplicant or have extenuating circumstances, the MBA optional essay will be required. We recommend taking advantage of the optional essay to make your application stand out, unless the instructions state otherwise.

Many applicants wonder if admissions consulting is worth considering. It certainly is, especially if you are unsure how to tackle your MBA essay topics. Your MBA essay is one of the most important components of your application because your admission depends on your career experience, not just your grades. An MBA essay consultant can help you craft a strong written response to your MBA essay topics and prepare for the MBA video essay.

A research paper delving into the mysteries of the connection between interest rates and stock market fluctuations involves some of the most bizarre aspects of:

 • economic growth

A complete analysis of this relationship involves an explanation of stock market jitters. It will include business outlook and a comparison of market conditions during low, medium, and high-interest rate calibrations. Any prospective stock market employer will be interested in a student’s analysis in this field.

The student who wishes to take on the world with a controversial subject can venture into the area of microfinance and its effect on:

 • communities
 • the world in general

Organizations like FINCA , that specialize in microfinance, provide a good start for MBA students looking to make changes in the world business environment. Such a topic would begin with a definition of microfinance and work into the need for its implementation around the world. An analytical study on a subject like this delves into the financial benefits of investing in the bottom layer of the economic world. This project can ignite a smoldering passion about the state of poverty.

Many factors go into a paper along these lines, including:

 • Market forces
 • stockholder expectations
 • risk management
 • product costs

As shown in the International Journal of Financial Studies , this project involves multiple layers of study that embrace nearly every factor that affects business. A student taking on this subject walks the edge of a pitfall. Dividend determinants affect much more than the business. Stockholders demand an explanation of the factors involved and the business demands enough income to continue to grow.

Researching a paper on the impacts of corporate social responsibility in the firm’s profitability is the most difficult subject any MBA student will tackle. The question of business ethics involves an incredible number of intangibles—abstract concepts that are judgment calls. Putting together a paper on this subject involves the definition of those abstract concepts and the implementation of them in the real world. Following the implementation of abstract ideas into the business world to discover the financial impact they create is a walk along a winding road. It leads to difficult decision making on paper and in reality.

A student pursuing an MBA in Finance degree must complete a research project that demonstrates their proficiency in every section of the curriculum. Any of these subjects will fill that requirement if researched and appropriately written.

A case study of a conglomerate on the various aspects of such an M&A venture from a financial management perspective can be a good starting point for a beginner in an MBA. Further refinement and extensions of the project can be done through comparative analyses with other M&As, understanding the reasons for failure of M&As as well as critical analyses of case studies.

15. Detailed Behaviour Financial Analysis Project

Lastly, if a candidate is interested in learning about the nuances and psychology of investments by individuals, they can work on a behavioural analysis project of investors in various stocks and avenues. A detailed exploratory project in this domain of behavioural financial analysis can be taken up, either through primary data collection or secondary data collection methods. This can be quite a novel project to take on in an MBA program and can be a meaningful addition to one’s project portfolio as well.

How to Pick the Right MBA Project for Yourself?

Even though there are a multiplicity of ideas and references to consider while choosing a project for your MBA, you can face a lot of dilemma and confusion as to the final choice you make about a topic. Pertinent questions such as the viability of the project, the presence of existing literature on the topic, the relevance of the topic and its alignment with your ultimate career and academic goals can make the choice even tougher.

However, keeping a few considerations in mind while making the decision can help you be more informed and certain about your choice while also allowing for greater confidence in the selection of the project that interests and suits you. Here we have mentioned a few key do’s and don’ts to consider while choosing an idea for your MBA capstone project:

 • List out all areas of potential interest to you and you can further work towards narrowing the best ones down as you progress.
 • Research about available areas of your interest by studying latest journals, developments and research in the field to get a grasp of the concept. At this point, you can eliminate a few of the potential interest areas depending upon the research saturation in the area.
 • Identify if there are any existing gaps in literature and understanding of a phenomenon in any of your research areas and if you have any breakthroughs about addressing those lacunae through your project.
 • Brainstorm ideas for your identified area of interest while considering factors like the relevance and originality of the study, addressing the existing gaps in understanding of the phenomenon you choose, the appropriate methodology of the research/project, the design of the project and its feasibility and so on.
 • In addition to addressing these questions, you can also continue researching about the area to gain further clarity about how you can complete the project on the chosen topic.
 • You can also seek guidance from your peers and mentors for refining your project idea.
 • Lastly, while finalising your project area, consider if the project aligns with your long-term academic and professional goals in management.

By keeping these considerations in mind, it is likely that you would end up selecting a project topic that is unique, relevant and of interest to you. Selecting a topical area for a capstone project can be a crucial decision impacting the learning experience of the MBA student and their future prospects, but when guided by the right information and advice, can be meaningful and motivating to the student to pursue.

How to Decide if an MBA Is Worth it

Understand your financial and career goals before enrolling in an MBA program.

A master's degree in business administration can be a great asset when looking for jobs but applicants should weigh the commitment of this opportunity.

Key Takeaways

 • Earning an MBA is always a significant time investment.
 • Consider career goals and costs before enrolling in an MBA program.
 • An MBA may lead to salary, promotion or job market benefits.

An MBA is a game changer for many professionals – a way to build specialized skills, make salary gains and valuable professional connections, or even change careers.

But it's not the right fit for everyone. Before committing to graduate business school to pursue a master of business administration degree, it's important to consider the time commitment, costs, potential return on investment and your personal career goals, experts say.

"You don't do it because you don't have anything else to do," says Sue Oldham, associate dean of MBA operations at Vanderbilt University's Owen Graduate School of Management in Tennessee. "You are doing it because you really want this career pivot and you want to be doing something different."

What to Consider Before Applying to an MBA Program

Time commitment.

A full-time MBA program typically takes two years, although accelerated full-time programs can take a single year. Executive and part-time MBA programs, designed for professionals who are attending school while working a full-time job, vary in length depending on how many credits a student takes each semester. Online and hybrid programs are also options, but every pathway to an MBA is a significant time investment.

Students should consider whether it's the right "season of life" to commit to an MBA program, Oldham says.

"Are you at a place in your life where you can step out of the workforce for two years (for a full-time MBA) and invest in yourself like that?" she says. "I think that's why part-time MBA programs are a much better option for people that are like, 'Listen, I can't take two years off. I've got to work. I've got a family. I've got a mortgage.'"

Academic Needs

Before applying, build a list of schools that meet your educational requirements, such as location, class size and academic tracks that align with your career goals.

"Unless you are definitely bound and determined and headed toward one of the very few slots available at the Ivys , the world is at your disposal for what you need and want," says Jeanne Allen, founder and CEO of the Washington, D.C.-based Center for Education Reform, which focuses on expanding educational opportunities.

Allen says some non-Ivy League colleges and newer MBA programs may offer "a better service – they are better priced; they are accelerated in terms of graduating; they are personalized to your needs; they are often competency-based. And that's going to get you your best education."

Experts advise visiting prospective programs virtually or in person , especially while classes are in session.

"Spend some time getting to know the students, the alumni and the staff at the various schools, because I always think culture really matters and each school has its own unique culture," Oldham says. "You have to figure out what that school's culture is and say, 'Does this mesh with who I am, the way I learn and the way I want to work?'"

Return on Investment

According to the 2023 Corporate Recruiters Survey by the Graduate Management Admission Council, the organization that designs and administers the GMAT, MBA graduates had the highest median earning potential in the U.S. among business school graduates, with an estimated median starting salary of $125,000 in 2023. Hiring is expected to remain stable over the next five years.

To decide whether an MBA program offers good return on investment , consider tuition costs and potential starting salaries – which most schools track – and calculate the salary-to-debt ratio. The return on investment is calculated by dividing the average salary and signing bonus of recent grads by the average student debt of those who borrowed.

Per GMAC's 2023 Enrolled Students report – which surveyed more than 660 enrolled business graduate students or recent graduates in 36 countries – 90% of respondents rated the overall value of their graduate business degree as "good," "excellent" or "outstanding." In addition, median total compensation increased by one-third after graduate business training, with greater increases for full-time MBA students, according to the study.

The question is, "do you see the degree helping to advance your salary, your work experiences and your opportunities to make a difference, in the sense of being able to pay that (debt) down so that's not some overwhelming burden?" says Sean Schrader, an MBA student in his final year at the University of South Florida's Muma College of Business and president of the National Association of Graduate-Professional Students.

Postgraduation, he plans to study abroad before pursuing more graduate education in law school . Schrader's ultimate goal is to work in public and government service.

"A lot of people would say, 'Why would you want to get an MBA if you're more interested in government?'" he says. "That can be a fair point. But I think that the MBA gives you a lot of skills that are very relevant in almost any environment."

Benefits of an MBA

Skill and career development.

The best MBA programs help you develop entrepreneurial habits, Allen says. "They build your ability to move, develop and manage programs in more innovative ways. It's not so much about what skills (you gain), it's about what kind of learning is going to best set you up for an increasingly complex, technologically sophisticated society, where just about anybody can start a business, manage or create a product."

Andrew Walker, director of research analysis and communications at GMAC, says MBA candidates want to graduate with problem-solving, communication, data interpretation and leadership skills, among others.

"Employers say things like patience, data analytics and strategy are the most important skills that graduate management education alumni can have and bring to their organizations," he says. "And these skills are only going to grow in importance in the next five years or so. There is a lot of alignment with the type of skills that candidates are looking for out of business school and what employers are looking for, which to us (means) a lot of business schools really are on the right track with what they are teaching alumni to be successful."

With full-time programs in particular, students graduate "better prepared to work in a culturally diverse organization," Oldham says.

Even more valuable is that MBA programs also teach certain hard skills, says Daniel Snow, director of MBA programs at Brigham Young University's Marriott School of Business in Utah.

"I think that a lot of people out there think that an MBA program is about ticking boxes on a series of skills," he says. "And while our program and other top programs do give you those skills, the really important differentiator is when you come out of an MBA program with managerial judgment. You can look at a messy situation that hasn't been contemplated in your textbooks, find the core of the problem and then you can go after that problem leading an organization."

An MBA may bring salary, promotion or job market benefits. But "if you think you're going to get an MBA and it's automatically catapult you into a CEO job, that's a bad reason to get an MBA," Allen says. "It can't necessarily do that and doesn't. It all depends on who you are."

Success with an MBA "really is (about) what you put into it and whether or not it helps you advance things that you already can do, but you want to take it to another level completely," she says. "It doesn't teach you business. It builds a mindset and an understanding of business culture and exposure to what's happening in the world of business that you don't necessarily get just by reading on your own."

A New Professional Network

Experts say an MBA also helps students expand their professional networks and build new connections that may broaden their opportunities and advance their career goals .

Networks vary by school, and experts recommend considering that in your research. Some MBA programs have alumni living around the world, for instance, while others are more localized.

"It's not just quality, but where do you want to go live your career geographically?" Snow says. "The quality of the people that you are going to be around is related to the network. ... You don't want to just be some place where you are not going to be pushed. You want to be around people who are going to really push you, that are excellent, that are striving to do the same things that you are doing."

April Fools! Here are 3 classic California pranks

Full disclosure: I’m not a big fan of April Fools’ Day pranks orchestrated by local governments, corporations or, worst of all, news organizations. Rarely do they hit the right tone and level of inventiveness to actually be funny.

Companies announcing name changes or bankruptcies ? Yawn.

Sure, plenty are harmless. Cities love to put their amateur Photoshop skills to work or fire off a social media post for some low-stakes tomfoolery. Cool, whatever.

In an age of fake news, increasingly convincing AI-generated imagery, and brands chasing every conceivable trend, April Fools’ Day floods the attention market with forgettable-at-best, tasteless-at-worst content that carries a one-day shelf life.

But it wasn’t always this boring. Some ingenious pranks of the past — and some arguably over-the-line — actually got people out of the house or riled up enough to call the government.

Here are a few California-based pranks that went above and beyond (or maybe too far?) on April Fools’ Day.

The San Diego space shuttle landing

In 1993, hundreds of San Diegans rushed to a small airport in the morning, hoping to witness an event very few get to see in real life: a space shuttle landing.

Because of a systems malfunction at Edwards Air Force Base, space shuttle Discovery was being diverted to touch down at San Diego’s Montgomery Field. Or so they’d been led to believe by a local radio station. But of course, no space shuttle was landing. There weren’t even any in orbit at the time.

The elaborate hoax was orchestrated by KGB-FM, which aired an interview with a faux NASA spokesperson to confirm Discovery was en route. Radio listeners even thought they were patched in with the shuttle crew at one point.

The ruse was believed to bring more than 1,000 people to the area, tying up traffic for hours. The airport manager had to explain to hundreds of angry would-be onlookers that they’d been had. The city’s Police Department threatened legal action for the chaos.

The whole saga was summarized well in this local TV news package .

Surely some people were peeved, but those interviewed by CBS 8 at the time seemed to take it in stride and appreciate the elaborate hoax, even if it created traffic issues and tied up some police resources for a nonexistent event.

Monkeying around with L.A. Zoo phone operators

Prank phone calls often feel like a remnant from a bygone era. (Do kids these days even know what *67 does?) Which is why this 1986 story I found in the L.A. Times archives struck me as equal parts nostalgic, delightful and wholesome.

Back in those days, when April 1 rolled around, the switchboard operators at the Los Angeles Zoo were inundated with calls. The people on the other end of the line asked if Ellie Font or Al Gator were available. Or they were returning calls from G. Raffe or Ryna Soris.

“Every April 1 it is the same,” former Times reporter Penelope McMillan wrote . “The phone at the Los Angeles Zoo in Griffith Park doesn’t stop ringing.”

For many of these calls, the zoo operators were merely a conduit for someone else’s prank. The likely scenario: Some practical joker left a message for a friend as, say, Mr. Wolf, then provided the zoo’s digits as the callback number.

“It’s crazy, absolutely crazy,” zoo spokesperson Lorri Cohen said at the time. “Several zoos around the country actually close down their switchboards April 1 rather than deal with it, and we considered that. Then we decided we may as well make the best of it.”

Adding to the confusion was the fact that several zoo staffers at that time actually had animal-related names, including Ruth Baer, Bob Wolf and Ralph Crane.

It’s unclear whether this tradition is still common in an era of automated phone menus, but kudos to those pre-internet pranksters for having their fun without the ability to share it further than their landline phone cords could stretch.

The ‘Taco Liberty Bell’

Last but most audacious is a stunt that may still hold the trophy for best corporate April Fools’ Day prank ever.

Taco Bell was behind this 1996 ruse, which created a national uproar. But the “ Mexican-inspired ” fast-food chain was founded and is currently headquartered in Southern California, so we’ll allow it.

The company took out a full-page ad in several major newspapers announcing it had bought the Liberty Bell to help reduce the national debt.

“It will now be called the ‘Taco Liberty Bell’ and will still be accessible to the American public for viewing,” the ad read. “While some may find this controversial, we hope our move will prompt other corporations to take similar action to do their part to reduce the country’s debt.”

People flipped out . Some radio talk show hosts bought it and spread it to listeners. A Clinton press secretary even joked about it to reporters .

The National Park Service, which maintains the Liberty Bell, received hundreds of angry calls and had to assure the public it had not sold off one of the nation’s treasures.

The stunt might have broken the internet, had most people actually used it back then. Only about 8% of the population was on ye olde World Wide Web at the time.

A Taco Bell spokesperson later apologized to “those people who didn’t get the joke.”

Pranks in the April Fools’ Day spirit sure hit differently back then. So as you go about your day, check your back for a “Kick me” sign, take any major brand announcements with a barrel-full of salt, and crank up the Who for good measure .

How public attitudes toward martin luther king jr. have changed since the 1960s.

About eight-in-ten American adults (81%) say civil rights leader Martin Luther King Jr. has had a positive impact on the United States, according to a Pew Research Center report that comes ahead of the 60th anniversary of the March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom . This majority includes nearly half of Americans (47%) who say King’s impact has been very positive. Just 3% say his impact on the country has been negative.

Sixty years after Martin Luther King Jr. gave his “I Have a Dream” speech at the March on Washington, Pew Research Center conducted this analysis to determine how views of King have changed over time in the United States.

This analysis uses data from a 2023 Center survey as well as data from Gallup surveys conducted in May 1963, August 1964, May 1965, August 1966, May 1969 and August 2011. The Center survey polled 5,073 U.S. adults from April 10 to April 16, 2023. Everyone who took part is a member of the Center’s American Trends Panel (ATP), an online survey panel that is recruited through national, random sampling of residential addresses. Address-based sampling ensures that nearly all U.S. adults have a chance of selection. The survey is weighted to be representative of the U.S. adult population by gender, race, ethnicity, partisan affiliation, education and other categories. Read more about the ATP’s methodology .

Here are the Pew Research Center survey questions used for this analysis , along with responses, and the survey methodology .

However, views of King haven’t always been so positive.

A bar chart showing that Americans viewed Martin Luther King Jr. much more positively after his 1968 death than during his life.

In May 1963, only about four-in-ten Americans (41%) had a favorable opinion of King, according to a Gallup survey . That included just 16% who viewed him highly favorably, rating him +4 or +5 on a scale of -5 (most unfavorable) to +5 (most favorable). The survey was conducted shortly after King’s Birmingham Campaign , which led the Alabama city to remove signs enforcing segregation of restrooms and drinking fountains and to desegregate lunch counters.

King’s favorable ratings remained about the same in Gallup surveys conducted in 1964 and 1965. But by August 1966, only a third of Americans had a favorable view of the civil rights leader. More than six-in-ten (63%) viewed him unfavorably, including 44% who viewed him highly unfavorably.

Gallup’s survey questions about King between 1963 and 1966 coincided with his civil rights work in a variety of areas:

 • In August 1963, King delivered the “I Have a Dream” speech during the March on Washington.
 • In June 1964, he demanded equal treatment at a segregated Florida restaurant, an act that led to his arrest.
 • In December 1964, he received the Nobel Peace Prize and pledged the full financial award to civil rights efforts.
 • In March 1965, he led a civil rights march from Selma, Alabama, to the state capital of Montgomery.
 • In June 1966, he completed fellow civil rights leader James Meredith’s March Against Fear after Meredith was wounded by a White gunman.
 • In August 1966, he was hit by a rock while marching through an all-White neighborhood in Chicago as part of the Chicago Freedom Movement. The movement sought to expand civil rights work to northern U.S. cities.

King was assassinated in April 1968 in Memphis, Tennessee. Gallup did not ask Americans to rate King again until August 2011, when the Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial was officially dedicated in Washington, D.C. By then, views of King had changed dramatically, as 94% of Americans had a favorable opinion of him. Americans were also broadly supportive of the memorial: 91% approved of it and 70% were at least somewhat interested in visiting it, according to the Gallup survey.

Racial differences in views of King

A bar chart that shows gaps in White and Black Americans' views of MLK were large in the 1960s but narrowed significantly by 2011.

Throughout the mid-1960s, Black Americans had much more favorable views of King than White Americans did. In the May 1963 Gallup survey, for example, 92% of Black Americans but only 35% of White Americans had a favorable opinion of the civil rights leader.

As more White Americans learned who King was over the next three years, a higher share of them viewed him unfavorably. Around four-in-ten White adults (41%) had an unfavorable view of King in May 1963 – a figure that rose to 69% by August 1966.

In 1969, Gallup asked Black adults in the U.S. whether they thought King’s beliefs about nonviolence had gained or lost support since his assassination a year earlier. About half of Black Americans (52%) said they thought King’s beliefs had lost support, while 30% said his beliefs had gained support.

By 2011, White Americans’ attitudes toward King had become much more positive. Fully 100% of Black adults and 93% of White adults had a favorable opinion of him, and majorities of both Black and White Americans (96% and 65%, respectively) had highly favorable views of him.

Views of racial equality after King

More than 40 years after King’s assassination, Americans were still divided on whether his dream of racial equality had been realized. In the 2011 Gallup survey, 51% of Americans said King’s dream had been realized, while 49% said it had not.

Pew Research Center’s new report, which uses survey data from April 2023, finds that Americans are similarly divided today about whether the U.S. has made progress on racial equality over the last 60 years.

About half of U.S. adults (52%) say that the country has made a great deal or a fair amount of progress, while 33% say it has made some progress and 15% say it has not made much or any progress. But Black Americans are more pessimistic: Just 30% say the U.S. has made a great deal or a fair amount of progress, compared with 58% of White adults. And 32% of Black adults say the country has made little or no progress, compared with 11% of White adults.

Note: Here are the Pew Research Center survey questions used for this analysis , along with responses, and the survey methodology .
