Why resuming from hibernation is so slow?

On a Windows 10 laptop, I noticed that resuming from hibernation takes quite a while.

(all timings from "after BIOS startup is finished and disk loading starts" to "Windows login screen appears")

By those data, assuming that all of the hibernation file is used, it should take 5-7 seconds to load it. But in reality is takes 30 seconds of disk activity, until the screen shows something (the login/lock screen, before that it just shows the spinning dots).

So it is 5 times slower that calculated above. Why is that? What are typical values?

It is a Lenovo P53 latop with Intel i7-9850H CPU, Windows is up to date, version 21H2

Stuck on Hibernate, Hard Reboot + Physical Removal SSD/RAM Doesn't Solve Problem

My laptop running Win 10 is stuck on the "Resume from Hibernation" screen forever. I left the battery out for more than a minute with power supply out, held the power button for 30 seconds and it won't work. Just holding the power button 10+ seconds on or off doesn't work either. 

As others said in other forum posts, I can't troubleshoot or get in safe mode as it's stuck on "Resume from Hibernation", no other screen show up before/after. I had just made an update to an Intel Bluetooth driver and another driver but hadn't rebooted yet (my pc idled and hibernated before I could), so don't know if it's the culprit.

I also basically took my laptop apart, removed my main SSD and both RAM chips, put them back in, it's still doing it! I'm at wits ends...

I need a solution ASAP as that's my work computer and need it to work before the end of the weekend!

Please, don't feed me the same premade answers from other posts that you fail to read, I have already done all the steps (READ MY POST), and I can't get IN, so don't tell me what I should do if I can, I know what to do if that were to happen but right now I CAN'T get in... I need ADVANCED help.

Let us resolve you concern for getting stuck on the "Resume from Hibernation" screen. For this case, we suggest that you follow the Startup Repair steps below:

•  Turn off your laptop.
•  Turn on your laptop. As soon as you see the Windows logo with the spinning dots , press and hold down the power button until your computer turns off. Do this process twice .
•  Turn on your laptop for the third time, and let it load.
•  It should give you the message: Preparing Automatic Repair .
•  On the next screen that would appear, click on Advanced Options .
•  Select Troubleshoot .
•  Go to Advanced Options .
•  Click on Startup Repair .
•  Wait for the repair to finish.

I managed to fix it thanks to an Indian IT guy on YouTube: https://youtu.be/28QS8aXcV08

Basically, what did the trick was keep the battery OUT, plug the power in, hold the power button for a good 10-15 seconds. The Hibernate screen shows up, but then when you keep holding it after a couple seconds, it brings a new loading screen and unlocked it for me. 

So I wanted to do the trick you mentioned, so last night I turned off my computer (proper shut down), and today it gets stuck on the main loading screen (the screen with intel style note, with the F2 and F8 options, but neither works, it's frozen. I tried the trick that worked for me yesterday, but no such luck now...

At this point if you don't have a proper trick for me to get past this, I think I will need to do a fresh install, but I still need to somehow get in one last time to wrap up my things and backup a few things...

Hello again,

Testing different ways to boot, this time no AC plugged in and only on battery, I held on both f2 and f7 in the hopes either one would load while I pressed the power on. I was able to get into Boot Options and noticed that my Boot Option #1 was set at the Blueray drive?? So I set it at my main C drive and restarted, also holding shift down in case I might get in safe mode.

When I saw the Win logo and the loading, I did all he steps you mentioned. After running the Startup Repair Troubleshoot, it says "Windows couldn't load correctly. System restore can try to restore your PC to an earlier point in time when it worked correctly. This repair will not change personal data, but it might remove some apps that were installed recently. You cannot undo this process." So I went forward with restore.

After a couple mins of loading to do the restore, it says "Startup Repair couldn't repair your PC. Press "Advanced options" to try other options to repair your PC or "Shut down" to turn off your PC. Log file: E:\\WINDOWS\System32\Logfiles\Srt\SrtTrail.txt" I'm not sure why suddenly my main drive is letter E instead of C? I don't believe I did anything that should change this (unless by changing priorities in boot options did that)?

I had actually just made a restore point earlier this week before I updated two intel drivers! So I went back in advanced options and selected a system restore with this restore point.

Except it doesn't work!

" System restore did not complete successfully. Your computer's system files and settings were not changed.

 System restore failed while restoring the directory from the restore point.

 And unspecified error occured during system restore. (0x80070091)

 You can try system restore again and choose a different restore point. If you continue to see this error, you can try an advanced recovery method."

At leat now I was able to get in, so I will try to wrap up backups and see what else can be done before doing a fresh install.... Never mind the last line below, I can't erase it it's jammed in the field!

...Which is what I've just done. I don't know what t anymore.

To give an update on my situation:

- I ended up doing a clean install of Windows 10 again. It had been almost 3 years anyways, so the timing was right.

- After doing a clean install, I was STILL having that  problem! So clearly something's up in with my BIOS or Boot Options...

- I "think" I might've found the root of the problem, but don't know how to fix it per say:

I believe the issue lies in the WD My Book 6TB HD I purchased a few months ago. I hadn't started using it yet, and when I started having it plugged in for my backups, I noticed my computer jam at the start when it's plugged in, and then when it's unplugged my computer starts with no issue. It's only after trying different things in booting my PC that I noticed identical steps produced different outcomes whether it was plugged in at startup or not.

The weird thing is my Boot Options is still set as my main SDD, even when that HD is plugged in, I never switched it to that one either, so I have no idea why/how it happens, and how to fix it other than making sure the drive isn't plugged in when I boot. I even own another older My Book that is always plugged in, and this one has never given me a problem. 

How can I fix it?

Hi Elise, We'd like to know if you're still stuck on hibernate. If not, we recommend running the System File Checker and DISM . These tools allow the users to scan for corruptions in Windows system files and restore missing or corrupted files. If the issue still persists after running the said tools, it is best if you will contact your device's manufacturer to run hardware diagnostic. They can assist you in performing the said process.

I looked it up and pretty much know for a fact now that the problem all along was indeed the WD My Book 6tb I purchased. It comes formatted in ExFAT instead of NTSF, and this somehow causes the computer to not boot if plugged in. Unfortunately I can't do the solution now (reformat to NTSF) as my Backup is too large to transfer anywhere else and I'm basically stuck in this problem until either Microsoft creates a solution for this, or that I buy another larger HD in the future, which won't be anytime soon. The other solution they provide is to turn off Legacy USB Support, but I'm now sure how this might affect my keyboard and mouse, or something else altogether.

Every once in awhile when I got to wake my PC up it wont turn on by the keyboard or mouse. But if I press the power button all the LEDs and fans come on for for 1-3 seconds then it turns completely off. After another press of the power button it boots up like normal and I wont have an issue with sleep mode for a few days. What can cause this? Could it be my PSU or Surge protector? I also have had problems with random freezes that don't crash the PC but freeze my display for a few seconds then come back with no error could this also be caused by the same problem? Specs i7-8700k G.Skill TridentZ 16GB 3200MHz ASUS ROG STRIX Z390-e ASUS ROG STRIX 1070ti Corsair RM850x PSU

Actually, it's MOST likely a driver or BIOS issue. I'd make sure that you have the most recent motherboard BIOS version installed AND that you check both the drivers at the motherboard product page (LAN/Ethernet or WiFi drivers. Audio drivers. Chipset drivers) for the latest driver versions and install them as necessary. Don't assume Windows, using the Microsoft supplied drivers, has you covered, because they probably don't. Always use the manufacturer specific drivers EXCEPT when there are specifically chipset drivers available from Intel or AMD for your chipset. If there are, on their website, then use those. For Z390 I have not found any on Intel's website so far, so using those found on your motherboard's product page is the best...
