Local Writing Groups
We often get asked about writing groups that are in Dorset, Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole. Below is a list of groups you can join.
Starting in 2024, together with BCP Libraries, we are forming Writers' Havens - informal groups hosted by volunteers who write - to create friendly groups of like-minded writers at a library convenient to you. Please be kind and supportive to your hosts.

Liselot Smulders – Volunteer Co-Ordinator
From an exotic destination in an entirely different time zone (The Netherlands), Liselot helps out as the first point of contact for volunteers. She has a background in media and entertainment management and, in 2018, spent a semester at Bournemouth University in order to dive deep into the world of scriptwriting. She is eclectic, loves to salsa dance, and – although very down to Earth – spends much of her spare time hanging off climbing walls!
Beth Mathews
Schools Liaison Officer at Bournemouth University. Beth and the Schools Liaison & Partnerships Team support the delivery of workshops by connecting the charity with our brilliant Student Ambassadors. Relatively new to Dorset, Beth enjoys exploring the local area with her collie Ziggy (Stardust).
Christian Edwardes
Christian is the Course Leader for the BA (Hons) Illustration course at AUB. He studied Fine Art at Central Saint Martins and Chelsea College of Art, and work, where he developed a real interest in art theory. The Cedar Tree Creative Writing
The cedar tree writers.
This is a friendly, encouraging group that meet once a month. We have a ‘cuppa’ and chat.. sometimes even a biscuit or two and sit back to listen and read out works we have prepared from a choice of prompts, given at each meeting.
There are no set rules to the piece, we have short stories, fiction, non fiction, poetry… these can take anything from a minute to 15 minutes or so to read. Sometimes we may read from work previously written…sometimes we may just come to listen to the delights in store!
Please contact us for the next meeting to let us know your coming, and get the prompts! Unless of course you would just like to come along and listen to begin with!
Writing Workshops/mini retreat!
Your workshop will begin with connection to your writing through visualisations and inspirational objects and themes. Simple, fun writing exercises will get the words moving from your head onto the page , with an opportunity to share and discuss, if you choose.
The Cedar Tree has a wonderfully creative ambience, leave self doubt at the door. Step into your creative self and find your essence. These workshops can be beautiful introduction to your writing, or perhaps a refreshing look at how you write…or just a lovely way to spend time meeting with friends, making friends and having a pleasurable morning.

Poetry Reflections
Do you love poetry, are you intrigued by poetry, has a particularly poem touched your life? We would love for you to join us on our monthly meet ups to engage with poetry of all sorts! The intention is not to be a serious critique group! We come together share a poem, listen ..comment.. if we feel the urge to express out thoughts! We have always have a wide range of poets anything from Larkin to Benjamin Zephaniah to Heaney and more! A glorious way to spend an afternoon!
This is a friendly group of book lovers, looking to be inspired and uplifted by the books chosen in this group. We are aiming for books that have meaning, make us contemplate, take us on a journey where the words resonate and maybe change or enlighten the way we see things. These may be true stories, fictional or words of wisdom. Although the original plan was to read, be happy and light hearted, on reflection, sometimes life is just not like that and shadows and tears have their teachings. We keep connected via Facebook and try to meet every 4-6 weeks depending on the book!

Free Read Scheme support for writers
Are you a budding writer? Would you benefit from constructive professional feedback on your work?
We are pleased to be part of the Arts Council England (ACE) Free Read Scheme .
The scheme offers low-income writers the opportunity to get free professional feedback on their writing via The Literary Consultancy, the UK's leading editorial consultancy.
It has helped hundreds of writers on to publication , but its main aim is to support writers developing their work and honing their writing craft through structured constructive feedback.
Since 2001, The Literary Consultancy has been in receipt of funding from Arts Council England to extend its offer to those unable to pay the fees for its commercial services.
How it works
The Literary Consultancy processes novels, short stories, non-fiction, poetry, scripts and screenplays, offering professional critical feedback.
Your work will be hand-matched to one of The Literary Consultancy's 90+ professional readers. You can expect to receive feedback in the form of a written critique. The notes you receive are intended to help you develop your writing further. Read more about whether a manuscript assessment would be helpful .
Who can apply
We are looking for high quality writing, as we can only submit a limited number of manuscripts due to demand and how much funding there is.
To apply, you must:
- be on low income
- write in English
You must not:
- have applied last year (you can't apply for 2 years in a row)
- be part of a creative writing programme or longer writing course
- work for the regional writing organisation you apply through
The Free Read Scheme particularly welcomes applications from writers belonging to groups that are under-represented in publishing, including:
- people with disabilities
- people who are Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic (BAME)
- members of the lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) community
How to apply
All submissions must be made online. All writing (with the exception of poetry) should be formatted double-spaced, in a 12pt font, and saved as Word or PDF document.
For poetry, state how many lines the submission contains.
For short stories, state how many words the submission contains.
Please also tell us a bit about yourself and your writing history. This can include any particular questions you would particularly like addressed.
You can submit any of the following:
- synopsis and up to 15,000 words
- short stories: up to 3000 words
- poetry: up to 200 lines
- TV, Film, Radio and Theatre scripts
- treatments (averaging 350 words per page): up to 10 pages

The Creative Writing Group
Richard Foreman, a member of the Creative Writing Group, tells us a little more about the aims and achievements of the group and also details how anyone interested in writing can get involved, despite the current situation.
Q. Where and when do you meet? A. We meet at The Centre, 7pm to 9pm on the first and third Tuesdays of the month. When current restrictions cease, we hope to resume this schedule.
Q. How many members do you have? A. There are currently around seven of us, but attendance numbers vary. There’s definitely room for more and we welcome new members.
Q. And how do things work? A. We set a writing ‘prompt’ each month. Those of us who have produced a short story or other piece of writing in response to this read our work aloud to the others during the first of the two monthly meetings. Reactions, comments and critiques are exchanged regarding each piece. This is done informally and supportively. Quite often the feedback session spills into the second meeting of the month, but we also try to use those meetings for information exchange and discussion regarding technique, etc. We are also happy for members to bring and read any other pieces of writing, if they’d like feedback on work in progress.
Q. What are the requirements for joining the group? A. Interest and enthusiasm to have a go at producing a piece of creative writing are the primary requirements. Current members range from those who have had work published in various formats to those who simply enjoy writing for fun. A willingness to consider what you have produced as a ‘work-in-progress’, and an ability to listen to others’ suggestions and make use of them is also important.
Q. What are the benefits of joining? A. An opportunity to share your writing with others in a supportive, encouraging and enjoyable atmosphere. A stimulus to produce at least one piece of work each month, should you wish to. A chance to learn about technique and develop your writing through feedback from others (and through giving your feedback to others).
Q. What are the group’s key achievements? A. The group has produced small print runs of three ‘Shaftesbury Tales’ booklets as fundraisers for the Arts Centre (copies available at the ticket desk) and members have also given readings during the last two ‘Fringe’ festivals. Some individual group members have published work in the form of books, e-books, contributions to magazines and anthologies.
Q. Why would you recommend it? A. Creative writing, particularly if you are unpublished and have no one to share your work with, can be a daunting and lonely pastime. The group offers an informal, relaxed, often humorous atmosphere in which to share work, get some idea how readers might respond to it and some suggestions about how the piece might be developed to widen its appeal. And like any such group it also provides an opportunity to get to know other people who share your interest.
Q. Anything else you’d like to tell us about the group? A. During the Covid 19 related lockdown, members of the group are continuing with the monthly ‘prompt’ work-exchange by email. If you’d like to get involved with this, contact [email protected] to be added to the group’s shared email list.

Four creative writing workshops led by writer and poet Sarah Acton for older adults wishing to socialise. No writing experience required.
My Creative Life This pilot project will deliver adult day care differently. Participants will be given a choice of different creative activities outside of the usual day care settings. Open to all ages and abilities, these gentle workshops will help you develop ideas and all styles of creative writing using fun exercises and games and with conversations and chat in small groups to swap thoughts and ideas.
We will focus on weekly themes around: local places and belonging/ animals and pets/ people, houses and memory/ gardens and nature. We'll be drawing on poems and stories, objects and memory to inspire journals, wildwriting, reflection, poetry and story with the main aim to have fun and get creative together. Expect lots of small group chats where cups of tea are encouraged!
If creative writing is your thing why not join our Dorset Libraries Writing Circle , a supportive community of people who love to write, who come together to pursue the art and craft of writing as a hobby or for well-being.

The World Happiness Project was started by Gerry Clarke and Chris Croft who had a vision to make the world a happier place.
Their number one mission is to create a global television series and video stream about Happiness and Wellbeing. There has been nothing on television about Happiness in recent years even though everyone is interested in the subject and there is nothing more important in life than being happy. Their vision is to make a difference and they have been writing and developing a major new UK television series and creating a global video channel about Happiness and Wellbeing.
In 2020 they decided to launch the UK’s first National Happiness and Wellbeing conference. The idea behind the event is to showcase actions and interventions that can increase happiness and improve mental health and wellbeing in the home, the community and the workplace. The conference event was scheduled to take place in Bournemouth from 17th to 19th April. Sadly, due to the Coronavirus pandemic, the conference was postponed and replaced by a 90 minute video stream entitled HAPPY people, places, planet featuring presentations by the speakers. See Happiness and Wellbeing conference page for details and link to our YouTube video.
Since the start of the Coronavirus lockdown, Gerry and Chris and the World Happiness Project team have established a highly successful online Global Happy Café . Following the outbreak of the pandemic in the UK, they replaced the monthly live meetings with a virtual Zoom meeting and now meet online twice a month. It provides an opportunity to focus on important issues relating to happiness, mental health and wellbeing in society around the world and the Global Happy Cafe meetings now reach out to a wider audience with over 1000 subscribers worldwide.
The aim has been to develop a fellowship of likeminded people from around the world interested in increasing happiness and improving mental health and wellbeing , promoting the Action for Happiness Ten Keys to Happier Living , and discussing the future of society following the Corona virus pandemic . Online meetings take place monthly, usually around 1st of the month.

She has been in a supporting role, helping others with their creative journey in a variety of contexts, from educational settings to festivals.
- Sarah Jane Ross, a visual artist : With over 5 years’ experience as a community artist, Sarah Jane loves responding to her surrounding landscapes, particularly Bridport where she lives, through a multidisciplinary arts practice.

Dorset HealthCare has teamed up with The Prince’s Trust to support young people getting into the NHS and health and social care across Dorset.
Whether you are looking at healthcare support worker roles, apprenticeships, administration positions or many others within the sector, we want to be able to help you be the best candidate for each job you apply to, with an inside track from people within the organisations that you will be applying for. We can assist you in the following ways.
Employability days
Employability days are a full day packed with information on the NHS, insights into available live job adverts, assistance with applications as well as the opportunity to have a mock interview and top tips from health and social care employers.
We focus on parts of applying that can often be a barrier to young people joining the health and social care sector and provide three months of assistance after the day to help each candidate find a role that suits them.
Layout of an employability day
1-1 mentoring
Our 1-1 mentoring works for 18-30 year olds – starting with a get to know you chat, exploring the different interests you have and the opportunities that health and social care have to offer. We then help find you roles that suit you, proof read any applications and supporting information before keeping in contact throughout the application process.
Application writing for the NHS
Have you ever looked at a job advert and not known where to start? Opened the application and it felt too overwhelming or long? In these workshops we can look over job descriptions, person specifications and everything you need to feel confident to fill in the supporting information on each and every application.
Interview practice
Whether you have had any assistance with the application or not, we are also here to help you prepare for interviews.

Welcome to Chickerell Primary Academy and Chickadees Pre school!
Dear Visitor,
Welcome to our website. We hope that you enjoy your visit and that it gives you a taste of what we can offer children entrusted into our care.
I am really proud to be the Headteacher of our school - it is an exciting, challenging place to work and an exciting, challenging place to learn.
'Every child matters, so every day counts'
This is the phrase that best sums up how, as a staff, we see education at Chickerell Primary Academy and Chickadees pre school. Our young people depend on us and their families to look after, nurture and inspire them every day. We want them to feel that 'the sky's the limit' and they can achieve ANYTHING they want to, with our support. We want them to be ambitious, positive and determined to make the best of themselves - and it is absolutely our moral obligation to help them to do this through challenging them in their learning, and modelling these attitudes for them.
Pupils love to be at our school. They respond well to the caring, nurturing approach that pervades everything we do. They enjoy their lessons and work hard in them. They know their teachers have high expectations of them and will continually push them to achieve their very best. They know it is important to try hard, even when you make mistakes. They feel safe, they know they can talk to any adult and they will get help where needed. They are polite and sociable and can play well together. They are proud to be part of this school.
We have high aspirations and great ambition for all of our children. I have been Head Teacher here for ten years and the children's progress and their achievements have improved year on year which is lovely to see. Many of our most recent results showed the vast majority of our children to be achieving at least national averages, and more often better, reflecting great progress from their individual starting points. We are extremely proud to provide a varied, interesting and inclusive curriculum that allows for all children to achieve their potential. With our extensive extra curricular programme, we have regular chances for them to do creative arts, singing, sport, drama and exploring the local environment. On top of this the teachers and teaching assistants work incredibly hard to make sure each child progresses in the key skills of reading, writing and numeracy.
Pupil safeguarding and their emotional and mental well being are paramount to us too. Children need to be emotionally 'ready to learn' in order to be educated as effectively as possible. We rely on the ELSA and THRIVE approaches to provide the children with the support they need. We are a Rights Respecting School and strongly encourage Pupil Voice. The 'United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child' (UNCRC) underpins all that we do. UNCRC Article 3 - All adults should do what is best for you. When adults make decisions, they should think about how their decisions affect children.
We know that young people only get 'one shot' at their education and as well as trying to encourage them to achieve their very best through a high level of aspiration, we want our children to leave us as independent, confident, emotionally resilient young people who are eager and well-prepared for secondary education. We particularly try to promote co-operation, respect and enthusiasm, alongside other key learning skills in the hope that our young people move onto the next stage of their education, 'secondary ready' in every sense of the phrase .
In essence, for us, 'every child matters and every day counts' - so we aim to make the very most of our time with them.

Buckland Newton is a “caring school that supports, challenges and nurtures its learners in a stimulating and thriving environment.” – Ofsted 2017
On behalf of myself, the staff and governors, I would like to warmly welcome you to Buckland Newton CE Primary School. We are a very successful village school and the highest achieving school in the area. We are equidistant from both Dorchester and Sherborne and our school is very much part of the local community – we have strong links with the local Church. We have wonderful support from the Governing Body, parents, a band of volunteers from the community and our FBNS (Friends of Buckland Newton School). We are committed to excellence in education and aim to excite children’s imaginations through a range of engaging and challenging learning experiences within a Christian environment.
In June 2017, along with most of the other schools in the Sherborne area, we became a Multi Academy Trust – SAST (Sherborne Area Schools’ Trust). This was the beginning of a new chapter for us but we feel in this changing educational landscape, it has given us the opportunity to retain our autonomy while working closely with other schools for the benefit of all our children.
We are currently ranked as the highest performing primary school in Dorset overall. We were delighted to have received a letter earlier this year from Nick Gibb, who is the Minister of State for Standards at the Department of Education, congratulating us on our very high progress scores between Key Stage 1 and 2 and ranking us in the top 2% of schools in the whole of England. At Buckland Newton we truly believe in educating the whole child and giving the children as many opportunities and learning experiences as we possibly can in all subjects, whether they are creative, practical or sports as well as academic, so that we can equip them for life in our modern world.
In our most recent Annual Review the children said, they loved school and felt they were well-supported and cared for and compared their experiences here to being part of a very happy family.
At Buckland Newton we can offer you outstanding teaching and learning, excellent behaviour and a warm, safe and friendly Christian ethos where every individual is valued. We truly believe that your child’s education is very much a two-way partnership between home and school. My staff are part of a dedicated team who will do their utmost to ensure that your child’s time here is safe, happy, and productive.
I hope you enjoy finding out about our school and how we work together to ensure our pupils are happy, secure and successful – please come and meet us! We have lots of exciting projects taking place this year and are very much looking forward to all the opportunities on offer!
Nicola A Ralph

Currently Wednesday Meeting for Worship is taking place on Zoom only.
Worshipping with Quakers
For Quakers, worship (sometimes called Meeting for Worship) is at the heart of what it means to be a Quaker. It is a source of strength and inspiration and it helps shape how we live our lives. It is an experience that is probably different from what is normally associated with the word ‘worship’. A meeting for worship usually lasts for an hour, or it may be half an hour. In Quaker worship there are no ministers or creeds. We first gather together in silence to quiet our minds – we don't have set hymns, prayers or sermons. In the stillness we open our hearts and lives to new insights and guidance. Sometimes we are moved to share what we discover with those present. We call this 'ministry'. We listen to what everyone has to say to find its meaning for us. Anyone can give ministry, including visitors.
What happens in the stillness? In the quiet we look for a sense of connection. This might be a connection with those around us, with our deepest selves, or perhaps with God. Our worship may take us beyond our own thoughts and ideas, beyond the everyday, to help us live with a deeper sense of love and purpose. Sometimes during worship, someone might speak or, when online, write something in the 'chat' box; this is a way of giving words to something that is really beyond words. This is called ministry and it comes from a sense of being prompted to share something of real importance; it might be about something that concerns them deeply or something from their own personal experience; it might be something that worries them or something they feel thankful for. Anyone can offer ministry, even if it is their first time in Quaker worship. Sometimes no one speaks and the whole meeting for worship can be silent. Who runs the meeting for worship? Anyone can contribute to a Quaker meeting for worship – there is no leader. In online worship, there will be a 'facilitator' and we do have people with a responsibility to support and nurture our worship. We call these people 'elders'.
What books do you use? Whilst there are no service books or set forms of words, during worship, people may read from the Bible or a book called Quaker faith & practice may be used. Quaker faith & practice is a collection of writing from our 375-year history. People may read from it quietly, or sometimes aloud if they feel prompted to. We also use a small booklet called Advices & queries, which is a collection of prompts, insights and questions.
Who can come to meeting? Meetings for worship are open to everyone. Children of all ages are a valued part of the Quaker community and there are some activities specifically for them.

A very warm welcome to Corpus Christi Catholic Primary School. We are very proud of our Christ-centred learning community which is formed and led by our Mission Statement.
The living out of this Mission Statement challenges each and every one of us on a daily basis and our aim is to practise what it says. Every human being is created in God’s image and likeness and therefore is valuable and worthy of respect. We strive to find the best possible quality care and education for children with different gifts and talents.
‘I have come that they may have life and have it to the full.’ (John 10:10)
Our children make excellent progress in Reading, Writing and Mathematics, significantly above average when compared to local and national schools. Our curriculum recognises and develops the uniqueness of each child through the provision of broad and balanced learning experiences that are both enriching and challenging. We want every child to experience the very highest quality cultural education and are proud to offer children weekly lessons in Art, Music, Spanish and PE taught by specialist teachers.
‘For just as the body is one and has many members, and all the members of the body, though many, are one body, so it is with Christ. For in one Spirit we were all baptised into one body—Jews or Greeks, slaves or free—and all were made to drink of one Spirit.’
(1 Corinthians 12:12)
Our aim is to nurture the 'whole child'. Developing the children emotionally, spiritually and socially is vital in allowing each individual to flourish and reach their full potential as a child of Christ.
We aim to educate and inform children so that they can take their place in society with an attitude of service and commitment to the common good. We fully recognise that the parents/carers are the first and prime educators and we aim to involve you as much as possible in your child’s education.
Our Home Visiting Service provides visits by trained and vetted volunteers to members in their own homes. The service is very flexible and is adapted to each individual member's needs.
Examples of the type of help given include taking people for short walks, assisting with forms and general paperwork, sorting/reading mail, tidying kitchen cupboards, writing Christmas cards and general friendship. The service aims to improve the quality of life for people enabling them to maintain their independence.
There are 280 Best Western Hotels around the country, many of which have staff members sat at home without anything to do. We, as a collective, are writing letters to people who might be lonely, perhaps because they are isolating, perhaps because they are working long hours or perhaps because they are caring for someone. This has been called “A Wave with Words”.
If anyone you know might benefit from receiving such a letter, please follow the link below. It is very easy to do and only take a minute to fill in the form.

Fascinated by Dorset’s Past? Looking for great activities in a small, sociable group? Let our records inspire you to write, make and create at Dorset History Centre!
In our monthly group we enjoy pictures, maps, documents or recordings and learn something new about our beautiful county and local artists.
In a small group we work with speech, painting, writing, music, photography and crafts. Sometimes we are joined by local crafts people, and sometimes group members share a traditional skill. We are always keen to learn something new about Dorset’s heritage and enjoy discussing the stories which come out of our 1,000 years of records. Participants have told us how much they enjoy the unusual activities and learning at the History Centre, as well as the friendly atmosphere.
The group is open to anyone who would like to take part including carers; those affected by dementia; those with a mobility, sensory or learning difficulty or anyone who would just enjoy the company and stimulation. It’s all about relaxing, meeting new people and having fun. This is an indoor activity, in a building with good access.
The group is relaxed. There is no need to make any payments in advance. The charge is £5 per session, with no charge for carers accompanying somebody to a session. This payment includes refreshments and any materials we use in the session.
Our Community Engagement Officer, Maria, leads the sessions and is available to chat with if you would like to find out more or book a place. We would like to make you comfortable, so please let us know about any extra challenges you face, and how we can help you access the sessions.
If you, a friend or loved one would like to book or find out more, please get in touch:
Hillbourne Primary is a friendly and caring school with a strong family ethos. We aim for every individual to feel valued and to have the opportunity to flourish. We encourage our children to become confident, articulate and caring citizens. We believe in our children and encourage them to believe in themselves and their own abilities and skills.
We offer a curriculum which we hope will motivate and inspire our children to have a life-long desire to learn whilst at the same time developing the fluency and confidence in reading, writing and mathematics, they will need to be functional in society.
Hillbourne Primary School operates out of two buildings in beautiful grounds. Our children and staff enjoy a light and spacious environment which we would be delighted to show you.
At Healthy Happy Kidz we work with Local Authorities to provide youngsters with the best possible opportunities during the Summer, Christmas and Easter school holidays. We host an Active programme which we have named 'Fit and Fed' that includes a wide range of sports and activities along with a daily healthy meal. The primary aims of the programme are to reduce isolation and ‘holiday hunger' for children aged 5 to 14 years who are in receipt of benefit based Free School Meals (FSM).
We offer age-appropriate physical fun and enriching activity that provide children with an opportunity to develop new skills or knowledge, to consolidate existing skills and knowledge, or to try out new experiences, and one element of nutritional education aimed at improving children’s knowledge and awareness of healthy eating on every day and with food education for families and carers. The scheme has been heavily influenced by Premiership footballer Marcus Rashford.
We are focused to supporting the HAF programme, and we continue to support young people with Special Educational Needs, learning & physical difficulties. We want to support more families by way of help from school partnerships and SENCOs.
To add extra value to children that attend we also include enrichment activities that can include, Internet safety, Nutrition/cooking workshops, Guest speakers, Football freestyler Dan Magness workshop and Performance, Family Activities, Local Attraction trips, Kids entertainer and magician, tickets to events, Chef Demonstration, Animal HQ, etc.
We also encourage older children aged 12-16 to our venues, we have identified the gap in this age group who have chosen to not take up the opportunity. We intend to run a TEST provision for this age group across evening sessions where activities such as: go carting, gym sessions, motivational speaker “Dan Magness” CV writing (preparing for employment), barbering & hairdressing demonstrations are included.
Dorset Youth Association’s reach across the county encompasses voluntary youth clubs and groups spread throughout rural Dorset; targeted work with children, young people and families focussing on health and improved wellbeing; and informs over 300 professionals in the voluntary and community sector. As the need of young people in Dorset changes, Dorset Youth Association is evolving to meet these needs, through volunteering projects, national and international expeditions, emotional and practical support to remain in or further their education or find work opportunities, promoting equal opportunities and diversity, and providing the support needed to help inspire young people and raise their aspirations.
Clubs and Groups
Support for clubs and groups is at the heart of Dorset Youth Association. We are here to provide support to the youth club leaders and supporters.
Support to youth club leaders includes advice and guidance on running a safe and fun youth club, providing skills through training in First Aid, Safeguarding and Health & Safety. We are here to provide help with starting a club, writing a constitution and community engagement, and provide ongoing support through club affiliation.
Families have been involved with Dorset Youth Association (DYA) since the start – from running youth clubs and groups, to transporting children to activities or expeditions, to undertaking parenting programmes or learning skills to influence their children’s decisions. DYA acknowledges the important role families provide, and that sometimes issues between family members need addressing before they can move forward.
The youth clubs and groups supported by DYA are always looking for more volunteers to help run the local clubs. If you are interested in doing this please look at our Clubs and Groups page where the currently affiliated clubs are held and get in contact.
If you would like to become a Friend Against Scams you can attend a short awareness session in person or complete this online training.
After this session you will be asked to start taking action to take a stand against scams. This could be by talking to your neighbours, friends or family about scams or writing to your local MP asking them to promote scams awareness action by delivering key messages to prevent people from being scammed.

Local Organisations and Groups
Bridport Read Easy group started up in 2011, when Vee Driscoll, who had trained as a Coach with the Dorchester and Weymouth group, offered to be a Pioneer and then Coordinator for a new group in Bridport. We have offered help with reading and writing to over 50 adults, working alongside them to encourage and support them on their learning journey. At least half of our readers have completed the course and moved on with their lives, but there is no time limit on learning to read; our volunteers continue to provide support until readers feel they have the confidence to take responsibility for their own learning and can become increasingly independent.
We cover Bridport, Lyme Regis and Beaminster areas. Originally we also had readers in Axminster and Honiton, but these are now Read Easy groups in their own right.
The Job Club is open to visitors every Thursday morning from 09:00 throughout the year. It is located at ‘Pippins’ on the corner of Lyme Road and Stoney Lane.
The Job Club volunteers have experience of helping with writing CVs, letters and with filling in job applications forms, whether paper or on-line. Copies of the local newspapers are on hand with vacancies or news about local companies.
The Job Club has laptops, printer and router and the volunteers will help you get started.

Are you a parent(s) or Carer of a child 9+ years who struggles to read due to dyslexia or another learning disability? I can help. I am a qualified Teacher and have experience working with people on comprehension and reading skills from 9 - 18 years old. I can also aid adults with reading difficulties in a private, encouraging, online setting.
I also have a First Class Degree and Masters Degree. Due to the pandemic and my own travel restrictions, I am only offering these sessions online . To book a session, you must have a stable Wi-Fi connection, a Webcam and access to Zoom. The shortest session you can book is half an hour and the longest an hour. Please contact me via the email listed to discuss my availability and rates.
My sessions are designed to accommodate one student at a time regardless of age or reading level. However, I can also provide an essay proof reading service on any humanities subject. Prices for this service begin at £10 if the essay is up to 3000 words. I am able to look at longer essays, but you must contact me via email before sending your essay. PLEASE NOTE: This is not an essay writing service, I will only be looking at your spelling, grammar, structure, paragraphing, and chapter headings. I may make a few minor suggestions via track changes using Microsoft Word, but the essay will remain in your own words.
Thank you for taking the time to visit my page.I shall look forward to hearing from you.

A First Class Opportunity for Young Writers in Dorset
28 February 2019
ArtfulScribe have appointed Tabitha Hayward to the role of Young Writers’ Lead Facilitator at Lighthouse, in Poole, as part of the DO:Write project. Tabby arrives with a First Class degree in English from the University of Oxford and has publication credits in The Isis , and The Missing Slate as well as being recipient of the Graham Midgley Memorial Prize for Poetry in 2015 and 2017. Offering considerable experience in workshop leadership at undergrad level and editing through her role as Editor-in-Chief of The Gallery , Tabby will lead two groups of writers, aged 11-14 years and 15-18 years on Saturdays during term-time at Lighthouse, starting on 9 th March 2019. ArtfulScribe director, Matt West, said: ‘It’s great to be able to offer this role to a recent graduate we feel has incredible potential to inspire new work and encourage the next generation of writers in the region. This appointment underlines ArtfulScribe’s commitment to empower, support and develop writers at all stages of their careers and it seems particularly fitting that Lighthouse Young Writers should be led by someone under the age of 25. Tabby’s energy and passion for writing is infectious and I’m really looking forward to seeing how both groups progress in the future.’ Tabitha Hayward said:
I am so excited to be a part of the wonderful work which ArtfulScribe does to encourage and support young writers and feel really privileged to have been entrusted with this important role, to help young writers in Dorset to develop their writing and unleash their creativity. The Lighthouse Young Writers Programme is something I would have loved to have attended myself when I was younger, and I am really looking forward to getting to know the young writers and being a part of their creative progression. I can’t wait to get started! Lighthouse Poole Deputy CEO, Sara St George said: Young Writers is a key part of the Lighthouse learning programme, enabling young people to develop their skills and their confidence and to prepare them for their future careers. We are delighted to be working with Artfulscribe and Tabitha on such an exciting project and look forward to seeing the work the groups develop over the coming months. Arts University Bournemouth Creative Writing BA student Lucy Pearce will join the Lighthouse Young Writers' delivery team as assistant facilitator. Lighthouse Young Writers’ groups are free to join and welcome writers of all levels and abilities, from those who may just be curious about writing to people with more experience.
