What is the History of Labour Day?

In India Labour Day or May Day was started to celebrated first in Chennai on May 1, 1923. The Labour Kisan Party of Hindustan initiated this. The leader of the party, Comrade Singaravelar organized two meetings to celebrate this event.

One meeting held on the Triplicane Beach and the other took place at the beach opposite Madras High Court. In the meeting, Singaravelar approved a resolution which indicated that the government should announce a national holiday on the May Day or Labour Day in India. This was the first time a red flag was hoisted in India.

Why Do We Celebrate Labor Day?

Labor Day, an annual celebration of workers and their achievements, originated during one of American labor history’s most dismal chapters.

In the late 1800s, at the height of the Industrial Revolution in the United States, the average American worked 12-hour days and seven-day weeks in order to eke out a basic living. Despite restrictions in some states, children as young as 5 or 6 toiled in mills, factories and mines across the country, earning a fraction of their adult counterparts’ wages.

People of all ages, particularly the very poor and recent immigrants, often faced extremely unsafe working conditions, with insufficient access to fresh air, sanitary facilities and breaks.

As manufacturing increasingly supplanted agriculture as the wellspring of American employment, labor unions, which had first appeared in the late 18th century, grew more prominent and vocal. They began organizing strikes and rallies to protest poor conditions and compel employers to renegotiate hours and pay.

Many of these events turned violent during this period, including the infamous Haymarket Riot of 1886, in which several Chicago policemen and workers were killed. Others gave rise to longstanding traditions: On September 5, 1882, 10,000 workers took unpaid time off to march from City Hall to Union Square in New York City , holding the first Labor Day parade in U.S. history.

The idea of a “workingmen’s holiday,” celebrated on the first Monday in September, caught on in other industrial centers across the country, and many states passed legislation recognizing it. Congress would not legalize the holiday until 12 years later, when a watershed moment in American labor history brought workers’ rights squarely into the public’s view. On May 11, 1894, employees of the Pullman Palace Car Company in Chicago went on strike to protest wage cuts and the firing of union representatives.

On June 26, the American Railroad Union, led by Eugene V. Debs , called for a boycott of all Pullman railway cars, crippling railroad traffic nationwide. To break the Pullman strike, the federal government dispatched troops to Chicago, unleashing a wave of riots that resulted in the deaths of more than a dozen workers.

Who Created Labor Day?

In the wake of this massive unrest and in an attempt to repair ties with American workers, Congress passed an act making Labor Day a legal holiday in the District of Columbia and the territories. On June 28, 1894, President Grover Cleveland signed it into law. More than a century later, the true founder of Labor Day has yet to be identified.

Many credit Peter J. McGuire, cofounder of the American Federation of Labor, while others have suggested that Matthew Maguire, a secretary of the Central Labor Union, first proposed the holiday.

Labor Day Celebrations

Labor Day is still celebrated in cities and towns across the United States with parades, picnics, barbecues, fireworks displays and other public gatherings, especially over the long Labor Day weekend. Labor Day is a U.S. national holiday held the first Monday every September. Unlike most U.S. holidays, it is a strange celebration without rituals, except for shopping and barbecuing. For most people it simply marks the last weekend of summer and the start of the school year.

The holiday’s founders in the late 1800s envisioned something very different from what the day has become. The founders were looking for two things: a means of unifying union workers and a reduction in work time.

History of Labor Day

The first Labor Day occurred in 1882 in New York City under the direction of that city’s Central Labor Union .

In the 1800s, unions covered only a small fraction of workers and were balkanized and relatively weak. The goal of organizations like the Central Labor Union and more modern-day counterparts like the AFL-CIO was to bring many small unions together to achieve a critical mass and power. The organizers of the first Labor Day were interested in creating an event that brought different types of workers together to meet each other and recognize their common interests.

However, the organizers had a large problem: No government or company recognized the first Monday in September as a day off work. The issue was solved temporarily by declaring a one-day strike in the city . All striking workers were expected to march in a parade and then eat and drink at a giant picnic afterwards.

The New York Tribune’s reporter covering the event felt the entire day was like one long political barbecue, with “rather dull speeches.”

Why was Labor Day invented?

Labor Day came about because workers felt they were spending too many hours and days on the job.

In the 1830s, manufacturing workers were putting in 70-hour weeks on average. Sixty years later, in 1890, hours of work had dropped, although the average manufacturing worker still toiled in a factory 60 hours a week.

These long working hours caused many union organizers to focus on winning a shorter eight-hour work day . They also focused on getting workers more days off, such as the Labor Day holiday, and reducing the workweek to just six days .

These early organizers clearly won since the most recent data show that the average person working in manufacturing is employed for a bit over 40 hours a week and most people work only five days a week.

Surprisingly, many politicians and business owners were actually in favor of giving workers more time off . That’s because workers who had no free time were not able to spend their wages on traveling, entertainment or dining out.

As the U.S. economy expanded beyond farming and basic manufacturing in the late 1800s and early 1900s, it became important for businesses to find consumers interested in buying the products and services being produced in ever greater amounts. Shortening the work week was one way of turning the working class into the consuming class.

Common misconceptions

The common misconception is that since Labor Day is a national holiday, everyone gets the day off. Nothing could be further from the truth.

While the first Labor Day was created by striking, the idea of a special holiday for workers was easy for politicians to support. It was easy because proclaiming a holiday, like Mother’s Day , costs legislators nothing and benefits them by currying favor with voters. In 1887 , Oregon, Colorado, Massachusetts, New York and New Jersey all declared a special legal holiday in September to celebrate workers.

Within 12 years, half the states in the country recognized Labor Day as a holiday. It became a national holiday in June 1894 when President Grover Cleveland signed the Labor Day bill into law. While most people interpreted this as recognizing the day as a national vacation, Congress’ proclamation covers only federal employees. It is up to each state to declare its own legal holidays.

Moreover, proclaiming any day an official holiday means little, as an official holiday does not require private employers and even some government agencies to give their workers the day off. Many stores are open on Labor Day. Essential government services in protection and transportation continue to function, and even less essential programs like national parks are open. Because not everyone is given time off on Labor Day, union workers as recently as the 1930s were being urged to stage one-day strikes if their employer refused to give them the day off.

In the president’s annual Labor Day declaration last year, Obama encouraged Americans “to observe this day with appropriate programs, ceremonies and activities that honor the contributions and resilience of working Americans.”

The proclamation, however, does not officially declare that anyone gets time off.

Controversy: Militants and founders

Today most people in the U.S. think of Labor Day as a noncontroversial holiday.

There is no family drama like at Thanksgiving , no religious issues like at Christmas. However, 100 years ago there was controversy.

The first controversy that people fought over was how militant workers should act on a day designed to honor workers. Communist, Marxist and socialist members of the trade union movement supported May 1 as an international day of demonstrations, street protests and even violence , which continues even today .

More moderate trade union members, however, advocated for a September Labor Day of parades and picnics. In the U.S., picnics, instead of street protests, won the day.

There is also dispute over who suggested the idea. The earliest history from the mid-1930s credits Peter J. McGuire, who founded the New York City Brotherhood of Carpenters and Joiners , in 1881 with suggesting a date that would fall “nearly midway between the Fourth of July and Thanksgiving” that “would publicly show the strength and esprit de corps of the trade and labor organizations.”

Later scholarship from the early 1970s makes an excellent case that Matthew Maguire, a representative from the Machinists Union, actually was the founder of Labor Day. However, because Matthew Maguire was seen as too radical, the more moderate Peter McGuire was given the credit.

Have we lost the spirit of Labor Day?

Today Labor Day is no longer about trade unionists marching down the street with banners and their tools of trade. Instead, it is a confused holiday with no associated rituals.

The original holiday was meant to handle a problem of long working hours and no time off. Although the battle over these issues would seem to have been won long ago, this issue is starting to come back with a vengeance, not for manufacturing workers but for highly skilled white-collar workers, many of whom are constantly connected to work.

If you work all the time and never really take a vacation, start a new ritual that honors the original spirit of Labor Day. Give yourself the day off. Don’t go in to work. Shut off your phone, computer and other electronic devices connecting you to your daily grind. Then go to a barbecue , like the original participants did over a century ago, and celebrate having at least one day off from work during the year!

Let’s Honor the True Spirit of Labor Day

In the late summer of 1921, an epic but surprisingly little-known confrontation took place between the forces of labor and capital. The battle unfolded not in one of the great industrial cities but in the rural coal country of southern West Virginia. Miners in the region — angered by life-threatening working conditions, corporate domination of the grim company towns in which they lived, the violent suppression of their attempts at unionization and the murder of a pro-labor local sheriff by company-hired thugs — took up arms to confront the coal companies in what became known as the Battle of Blair Mountain. It was the largest labor uprising in American history and the biggest armed uprising in the United States since the Civil War.

A veritable proletarian army of about 10,000 miners faced a better-armed force of more than 2,000 men — law enforcement officers and others — equipped with high-powered rifles, machine guns and company-provided private planes that dropped shrapnel bombs on union headquarters. Though the miners did not retreat, they ultimately put down their arms when more than 2,000 federal troops arrived to intervene.

That an event of this magnitude remains so obscure reveals how marginal the story of labor’s often violent and bloody struggle for human dignity is in standard narratives of American history. This is in striking contrast to the long-overdue, if still unfinished, attempt to reckon with our nation’s tortured racial past. There has been no comparable reckoning with our labor history — the most violent in the Western world — and there should be. It is a history that, alongside the struggle for racial equality (with which it is complexly entangled), has profoundly shaped the country we live in today.

The miners’ defeat at Blair Mountain was the culmination of a long series of major losses for labor dating back to the Great Railroad Strike of 1877. Perhaps the most crushing defeat came in 1894, when the American Railway Union confronted the nation’s railroad tycoons with a strike. The New York Tribune called it “the greatest battle between labor and capital that has ever been inaugurated in the United States.” The strike, which involved as many as 250,000 workers in 27 states, was defeated when the United States Army made 16,000 troops available to protect the railroads — a remarkable commitment, given that the entire U.S. Army at the time consisted of roughly 25,000 troops. By the time the strike was over, more than 50 people were dead.

With socialists worldwide already celebrating the first of May — May Day — to display labor’s strength and to honor its struggle for an eight-hour workday, President Grover Cleveland, troubled by May Day’s association with radicalism, pushed for the rapid designation of the first Monday of September as Labor Day . Thus was born an American alternative to May Day.

As early as 1922, workers in most European countries as well as in Australia and New Zealand had organized various mass political parties dedicated to furthering the interests of the working class — Labourite, Social Democratic, Socialist, Communist. Yet even though American workers lacked a comparable party to defend their interests, they were to make gains during the Great Depression and the labor-friendly administration of Franklin Roosevelt. Accounting for just 11 percent of the labor force in 1933, union membership more than doubled, to 29 percent, by 1939. (Crucially, the Wagner Act of 1935 enlisted the power of the federal government to enforce the right of workers to form unions and to bargain collectively.)

But it was only through militant actions, including sit-down strikes and bloody battles, that anti-union citadels such as General Motors and United States Steel were finally breached. With the passage of the Fair Labor Standards Act of 1938, which established the eight-hour workday, the 40-hour workweek, the minimum wage and overtime pay, labor’s “golden era,” which ran roughly from the late 1930s to the early 1970s, began in earnest. By 1953, nearly 18 million workers — more than one in three — were enrolled in a union.

A strong union movement delivered many benefits to Americans during that time. In highly unionized industries, workers were able to negotiate generous benefits packages that included health care, paid vacations and pensions, in addition to guaranteed annual wage increases. Taxes during this era were steeply progressive, with the top marginal income tax rate remaining at 90 percent until 1963 and staying at 70 percent through the 1970s. In this regard, the United States of the New Deal era exemplified a broader pattern: Strong labor movements make for higher levels of social well-being. This is a principal reason that highly unionized countries like Norway and Denmark top today’s measures of social progress.

After peaking in strength in the mid-1950s, unions began a slow process of decline. Initially, the decline was gradual; while the percentage of unionized workers fell to 27 percent in 1970 from 33 percent in 1958, absolute numbers continued to grow, increasing from 18.1 million in 1958 to 20.8 million in 1970. But after President Ronald Reagan’s firing of 13,000 federal aircraft controllers in their ill-fated strike of 1981, union membership began to decline sharply. By 1990, the absolute number of union members had declined by more than three million over the course of the decade. As workers became more insecure, the number of strikes also dropped, to 44 in 1990 from 235 in 1979.

Today the labor movement finds itself in its weakest position since the early 1930s. We have now had ample time to see the effects of labor’s decline: stagnating wages, high levels of inequality and a shrinking middle class. Major corporations like Uber and Amazon ferociously oppose unionization. (Uber, along with other ride-share companies, recently spent more than $220 million to support an anti-union proposition in California.) As union strength has declined, the pay gap between corporate executives and ordinary workers has reached staggering proportions. In 1965 the ratio of chief executive pay to worker pay was 15 to 1; by 2020, it had risen to 351 to 1.

Yet even as union membership has fallen, there are grounds for hope. Public attitudes toward labor are more positive than they have been in years, and public sentiment toward big business has taken a sharp downturn . Just nine years ago, the labor-funded Fight for $15 campaign fought for the seemingly quixotic goal of raising the minimum hourly wage to $15; since then, 11 states have enacted a $15 minimum wage. So political dynamics can change, sometimes with stunning speed.

If the past is any guide to the future, the struggle of labor against concentrated corporate power is likely to be long and difficult. Winning an eight-hour workday took more than half a century, and the labor movement did not succeed in unionizing the steel industry for more than 40 years.

Today, organizing corporate giants such as Walmart and Amazon will require even more than the commitment of dedicated organizers and the combined efforts of the entire labor movement. Successful unionization will also depend on strong support from a public that, though increasingly worried about surging inequality and the decline of the middle class, has yet to recognize the connection between a strong labor movement and the reversal of these corrosive trends.

It was the Toronto Printers Union that demanded lesser working hours in early 1870s. In March 1872, they went on strike to get their demands fulfilled. They also conducted demonstrations for the rights of the workers. The printing industry in the country suffered immense loss due to this strike. Trade unions were formed in other industries too and soon they all came together to raise their voice against the industrialists.

Around 24 leaders were arrested for instigating people to go on strike. Going on strike was an offence at that time. The law did not even allow the formation of trade unions. However, the protests continued and they were soon released. Few months later, similar parade was organised in Ottawa. This forced the government to revise the law against the trade unions. Canadian Labour Congress was eventually formed.

Labour Day in United States

During the late 19 th century, the trade unions in the United States suggested a special day to mark the contribution of the labour class towards the society.

The growing exploitation of the labour class in the United States led to the Central Labour Union and Knights of Labours joining hands. Together, they led the first parade that marked a significant movement against the industrialists who were exploiting the labourers by paying them meagre wages and forcing them to work for long hours. The first parade was held in New York City. Workers from various organizations participated in it to stand for the cause. Their demands were eventually heard.

In the year 1887, Labour Day was observed as a public holiday for the first time in Oregon. By 1894 as many as 30 states in United States began celebrating Labour Day. The day is celebrated to honour the American Labour Movement.

Alternatively, it is said that it was Peter J. McGuire from the American Federation of Labour who first suggested that a special day must be dedicated to the labourers. He came up with the proposal in May 1882 after having seen the annual labour festival in Toronto, Ontario, Canada.

We celebrate labour day each year on May 1, to recognise the hard work of millions of working men and women that make our life easier. May 1, also corresponds with international worker’s day celebrated across the globe. In India, it was first celebrated in 1923, in Chennai and its history dates back to 1886.

May Day or Labour Day is known by many names such as ‘Kamgar din’ or ‘Antarrashtriya Shramik Diwas’ in Hindi, ‘Uzhaopalar Naal’ in Tamil and ‘Kamgar Diwas’ in Marathi .

We commemorate this day every year to recognise accomplishments and to inspire employees.

On the international level, it is observed as a working-class holiday.

India's first Labor Day was observed in the province of Madras (now Chennai) in 1923.

The first group to arrange May Day festivities in India was the Labour Kisan Party of Hindustan.

It started as a protest movement in Chicago in favour of an 8-hour workweek for employees.

We observe it as a holiday in more than 80 countries around the world, including India.

It also has roots in the 19th-century labour union movement in the United States of America. Industrialists at the time used to abuse the labour class by forcing them to work up to 15 hours every day.

It helps to spread knowledge among the labourers regarding their rights.

It also makes the citizens aware of the labour’s hard work so that they don’t abuse them by forcing them to work more than 8 hours.

Good morning everyone, my name is Riya and I am a student at Auxilium Convent. Today, I stand before you to pay tribute to a group of people who often go unnoticed, but who play a critical role in the functioning of our society - the workers.

Labour Day is a day to celebrate and acknowledge the contributions of the working class, and to remember the sacrifices made by those who fought for better working conditions and fair wages. It is a day to celebrate the backbone of our society, the unsung heroes who work hard every day to make our world a better place.

We often take for granted the services and products that are provided to us by workers. From the roads we drive on, to the food we eat, to the clothes we wear, all of these things are made possible by the hard work of workers. They are the ones who work long hours, face challenging conditions and put their health and safety on the line, all for the benefit of our communities.

But Labour Day is about more than just celebrating workers. It is about recognising their inherent dignity and worth, and ensuring that they are treated with respect and fairness. It is about ensuring that workers have safe working conditions, fair wages, and the right to form unions to protect their interests. Let us commit ourselves to making the world a better place for all workers.

Good morning everyone, and a warm welcome to our celebration of Labor Day at Auxilium Convent School. My name is Indrita, and it is my honor to stand before you today, as a proud student of this great institution, to deliver a speech on this important occasion.

Labor Day is a day to recognise and celebrate the contributions of all workers, regardless of their profession or industry. It is a day to reflect on the importance of work, and to pay tribute to the men and women who make our society and economy function, every day.

In today's society, it is all too common for individuals to overlook the crucial role that each and every worker plays in the very fabric of our communities. It is easy to take for granted the seemingly small, yet critical contributions of workers in every sector of our society. However, the reality is that every worker, regardless of their profession, is crucial to the successful operation of our society.

Farmers, for example, are the backbone of our food production system. They work tirelessly to grow the crops that feed our families and sustain our communities. These hardworking individuals often labour in gruelling conditions, facing weather extremes and working long hours to provide us with the sustenance we need to survive. Without them, we would not have the fresh, wholesome food that we so often take for granted.

Similarly, teachers are integral to the development and education of our children. They shape the minds of the next generation, imparting wisdom and knowledge that will stay with our children for a lifetime. They provide a safe and nurturing environment for our children to learn, grow and develop, both academically and emotionally. Teachers play a crucial role in ensuring the future of our society, by equipping our children with the skills and knowledge they will need to succeed in life.

But this is not just about acknowledging the importance of work. It is also about recognising the human dignity of all workers, and ensuring that they are treated with the respect and dignity they deserve. Whether they work in an office or a factory, in the public sector or the private sector, every worker has the right to safe working conditions, fair pay, and equal opportunities.

Unfortunately, not all workers in our society enjoy these basic rights and protections. From exploitation and abuse, to long hours and low pay, to inadequate health and safety regulations, there are still many challenges that workers face, even in our modern world. And it is up to us, as responsible citizens and members of society, to fight for the rights and dignity of all workers, and to ensure that they are treated fairly and justly.

So, on this Labor Day, let us remember the importance of work, and the contributions of all workers to our society. Let us celebrate the human dignity of every worker, and recognize their essential role in our world. And let us redouble our efforts to fight for the rights and protections of all workers, and to create a more just and equal society for all.

Labor Day is a widely-celebrated American holiday. For many, the day marks the end of summer and the beginning of the school year. But beyond the opportunity for indulging in barbecues and poolside gatherings, Labor Day holds significant historical weight.

So what is Labor Day and why do we celebrate it? Ahmed White, a professor of labor and criminal law, answers these questions and more.

What is Labor Day?

Labor Day is our country's most explicit way of recognizing the contributions of workers in this country and the history of labor in the U.S.

The first celebrations were in the 1880s. They occurred locally and were organized by workers and unions. These holidays were informal and held in the picnic season at the end of the summer, which is one of the reasons we celebrate Labor Day in September. But it wasn’t made a federal holiday until 1894.

Why do we celebrate Labor Day?

Many of us work. We don't need a holiday to remind us what work is and the difficulties and rewards that come with it. But through the course of a typical year, we don't often get the opportunity to reflect on why we do our jobs the way we do, where our current workers' rights came from, and the price that many people paid to secure those rights for us today. And that’s well worth remembering.

Why does the U.S. celebrate Labor Day instead of Workers’ Day?

There's a very complex history there that has to do with the relationship between Labor Day and May Day. Only the United States and Canada observe Labor Day, which falls on the first Monday of September. This distinguishes them from the rest of the world, where Workers’ Day typically coincides with May Day, observed on May 1.

In May of 1886, the Haymarket Affair unfolded in Chicago. This involved contentious and often violent confrontations between protesting workers, who demanded shorter working hours, and their employers and the police. These clashes led to considerable deaths and even the execution of some labor leaders who were charged with somehow being behind a deadly terrorist bombing at a place in Chicago called the Haymarket.

In the years after the Haymarket Affair, labor leaders in the U.S. advocated for May Day to become Workers’ Day. That effort took off internationally but not here in the United States. This is partly because U.S. government officials were wary of establishing a national holiday that commemorates the workers who had been killed in these clashes. Holding the holiday in September also aligned with how it was already being celebrated in some parts of the country.

What was happening during the labor movement in the late 19th century?

One of the most notable things was how violent this period was. Hundreds of people were killed in conflicts between workers on strike and various opposing forces, including employers, police, private security personnel, National Guards and militia groups.

Some of these instances are still well remembered today because of how violent they were. Take, for instance, not only the Haymarket Affair, but also the 1894 Pullman Strike , which was just as violent and closely preceded the establishment of the Labor Day holiday.

Incidentally, Colorado was no different. There were extraordinarily violent strikes, especially within the mining industry. The 1913–14 coal strike along the Front Range included the Ludlow Massacre near Trinidad, which resulted in around 20 deaths, most of them workers' family members. Another coal strike from 1927 to 1928 claimed the lives of eight workers, including six who were shot dead by state police at a mine in Boulder County. This came to be known as the Columbine Mine Massacre.

Such violence arose mainly out of a refusal on the part of employers and their allies to recognize the rights that present-day workers possess, such as the ability to establish unions, initiate collective bargaining, and engage in protest.

Why is it important to remember this past?

One reason is that we take much of it for granted, not just in the way of employment and labor rights but our entire legal system and the legacies of labor and conflict.

So many of our country's institutional structures, culture and political legacies have to do with labor and the labor movement. America is a country of workers built by workers. That includes everything we see around us and also things we don't often think about, such as our legal system and the rights we have today.

What are other ways that people can celebrate and remember the real reasoning behind Labor Day?

I think one thing that people can do is to learn something about the history of labor in this country. There are plenty of books and websites and magazines that chronicle this history. It’s not just a violent and dramatic history, but one that is compelling and essential to understanding this country, where it is today and where it's going in the future.

We have gathered here to celebrate the International Labour’s Day at our company; it is celebrated annually on 1 st May to commemorate the hard work and dedication of labours towards the organisation irrespective of their power and position, roles and responsibilities. Labour Day is an honour to the social and economic achievements of the workers. Labour Day is also known as ‘May Day’ or International Worker’s Day and is celebrated as a National Holiday in approximately 80 countries. It ideally constitutes annual and national acknowledgment towards the devotion and contributions of the workers who ensure the prosperity, strength and well-being of the country.

Our organisation gives utmost importance to the hard work of every employee and believes in giving them equal rights. I am associated with this company for around 35 years now and I haven’t come across a single issue or grievance that is related to the suppression of the labour’s rights.

Since we have many new joiners in the organisation who are also present today; I would like to give a brief about the origin of Labour’s day. May Day or the Labour Day originated in the late 19 th Century from the United States labour union movement advocates eight hours of work per day. Since the working conditions in the late nineteenth century were pathetic and unsafe for the workers, they had to work for around 12-16 hours per day. In 1884, The Federation of Organized Trades and Labour Unions (FOLTU) passed a resolution that 8 working hours shall constitute a legal working day from 1st May, 1886 onwards. Several movements, strikes, etc were undertaken by the labours demanding a standard eight hours of working day. Five years later, 1 st May was recognized as a National holiday by a socialist organization and gradually several countries adopted this culture.

May Day is purely celebrated to pay tribute and honour to the contributions made by the workers towards the betterment of an organisation and consequently our society. But today, the Labour Day has evolved as a labour union celebration losing the deeper and the true significance of this day.

Even though, our organisation strongly recognizes the rights of the labours also known as employees, but there are several companies which actually take the employees for granted. Though Labour Day was started to implement the 8-hour of work per day schedule, but an employee has several other rights in the organisation too. It’s important that the organisation doesn’t solely operate with the intention of generating profit; but it should also take care of the needs and requirements of the employees without whom, the company cannot achieve its goals. At the same time, labours or employees should also respect the work culture and stick to the code of conduct of the organisation they are working with.

Labour Day certainly protects the rights of the labours and the employees should not use it as a weapon to threaten the management in order to achieve undue advantages; only then will the purpose of the Labour Day will be fulfilled.

Thank you for being a part of this forum. Today we will discuss about the Labour Day, which is also called as May Day. It is celebrated worldwide on May 1 st every year. Our organisation is a Private Welfare Organisation that works in association with the State Government; we basically work for the development of the workers that belong to the low strata. Some of the very renowned Industrialists are also present amongst us today who support this movement. Friends, whenever we hear the term labour, we imagine tough or hard work or physical labour. We have gathered here to focus on some important rights of the labour who work for the big and prominent organisations.

Even though historically Labour Day originated in the US in order to get a bill passed that advocated 8 hours of work for the labours which got accepted and since 1886 onwards, celebration of Labour Day started in order to honour the hard work of the labours or employees.

The fact is that no company can flourish or even sustain without labour. But when we say, we also mean any or every employee working for the company. Companies should also ensure other than following the 8 hours of work that labours or employees are not discriminated on the basis of race, caste, creed, gender, disability, etc and they should be paid competitive wages or salary. In addition to this, each labour is an individual first and thus should be valued irrespective of their position or job responsibilities.

It is also true that the labours are the driving force of our Indian economy and industrial progress. Labours have a great political influence too as certain Labour issues have helped several political parties win elections. Labours help run factories, build roads, buildings, etc drill for oil, and many more.

Today’s labours are is no longer ignorant or uneducated people who don’t know their rights or who can be suppressed easily. But there are some big companies which import labours from remote areas or villages. These people are naïve and since they are poor, they agree to work on any term and conditions. The members of our organisation travel in those areas and listen to the issues faced by them and highlight the same to the state government and work towards their betterment. We have also opened schools in many villages and impart education to children and grown up people.

Our organisation also works against child labour. We have identified several mines and factories that employ children in their production unit. The issue had been highlighted last year by one of the NGOs and we immediately took up the issue and liberated all those children from such units. We are also providing education to them now and art and craft training to their respective parents so that they can earn their livelihood.

I would appeal to all the industrialists, government, both private and government firms, including the common people that we should join hands in eradicating evil from our society and support the low strata people so that they can also earn a respectable life.

This day is usually celebrated on 1st May every year but it tends to also vary as per the countries. This day is also known as the May day. Just imagine, if we people had to work for 12 to 16 hours a day how restless and irritated we would have always felt. Honestly, at present I even wish that there should be a provision of flexible hours depending on the workload on an employee or worker. This day has equal or if i may say more importance that the appraisal day to the workers. This day has led a great impact by the reduction of working hours and laying down the base for appraising the accomplishments and achievements of the work force.

This celebration has become a historic significance all over the world and celebrated by the Labor unions worldwide. Labourers always put in their efforts to make our lives better and indeed they deserve the honour for the work they do. In India, this labour day was celebrated for the first time in year 1923. This day is a special occasion when countries worldwide celebrate the true spirit of the working class and labourers. It’s the day when workers get together and celebrate their strengths which tend to indicate how effectively they always have been able to and will continue to struggle to bring in positive reforms for the working class of the society.

We all should safeguard the working class in all respects that we can do. It is indeed a special work force that put in efforts for their well being and better lives. Though this day is celebrated as a national holiday in most of the countries but we should not just deal with this day as a holiday but also as the true dedication to honour their efforts and activities done. We should encourage our children and other associates to celebrate this day in their own way and should know the importance of this day.

Special seminars and sessions should be conducted for recognizing the efforts of the labour force. Thank you for gracing this occasion and sharing your views along with me.

The Child Act 1986 prohibited employing any child below 14 years and is considered as a criminal offence. No company can grow without hiring people who dedicatedly work for them. So in return of that they deserve the respect and fair judgement for the duties delivered on their part.

Labour Day has given the right to all the workers to enjoy the freedom and privileges they have gained for their contribution to the nation.
