The roots of football can be traced back to ancient civilizations. China’s Tsu Chu, Greece’s Episkyros, and Rome’s Harpastum were all early forms of the game. However, modern football has its origins in medieval England where it was more of a chaotic and violent community event than a structured sport.

Formalization and Spread

The transformation of football into an organized sport happened in the 19th century. In 1848, the Cambridge Rules were established, creating a standardized version of the game. The formation of the Football Association (FA) in England in 1863 marked a significant milestone, with the FA rules becoming widely accepted.

Globalization of Football

Football’s popularity quickly spread worldwide. The establishment of FIFA (Fédération Internationale de Football Association) in 1904 facilitated international competition. The inaugural World Cup, held in 1930, symbolized the globalization of the sport.

The 20th century saw football’s commercialization, with clubs becoming professional entities. Technological advancements like television and the internet have further globalized the sport, making it a universal cultural phenomenon.

From its humble origins to its current status as the most popular sport globally, football’s history is a testament to its enduring appeal. The game’s evolution reflects wider social changes, and its future promises to be as dynamic and exciting as its past.

500 Words Essay on History of Football

Introduction.

Football, a sport that has captivated millions worldwide, has a rich and intriguing history that dates back over 2,000 years. The game’s evolution has been influenced by various cultures and societies, resulting in the modern form of football we know today.

The Ancient Roots

The earliest origins of football can be traced back to ancient civilizations. China’s Han Dynasty (206 BC – 220 AD) saw a game called ‘Cuju,’ which involved kicking a leather ball through a hole in a silk cloth. Similarly, the Greeks played ‘Episkyros,’ and the Romans played ‘Harpastum,’ both of which bear resemblance to the modern game.

Medieval Developments

During the Middle Ages, various forms of football were popular in Europe. These often violent and chaotic games were played between neighboring towns and villages, involving an unlimited number of players and lasting several hours or even days. England’s King Edward III and Scotland’s King James I both attempted to ban these games due to their disruptive nature.

The Birth of Modern Football

The transformation of football into a regulated sport began in the 19th century England. In 1848, the Cambridge Rules were established, providing a framework for the game. However, it was the formation of the Football Association (FA) in 1863 that truly marked the birth of modern football. The FA developed a standardized set of rules, separating football from rugby and paving the way for the sport’s global spread.

Global Spread and FIFA’s Establishment

Football’s popularity spread rapidly during the late 19th and early 20th centuries, reaching South America, Africa, and Asia. The need for an international governing body led to the establishment of the Fédération Internationale de Football Association (FIFA) in 1904. FIFA’s most significant contribution to football is undoubtedly the World Cup, first held in 1930, which has since become the most prestigious football tournament globally.

The Modern Game

The 20th and 21st centuries have seen football evolve into a global phenomenon. Innovations such as video technology, goal-line technology, and the introduction of the VAR system have changed the game’s dynamics. The sport’s commercialization has also grown, with clubs becoming global brands, and player transfers reaching astronomical figures.

Football’s history is a testament to its enduring appeal and its ability to unite people across different cultures and societies. From its ancient origins to its modern form, the game has undergone significant transformations. As it continues to evolve, it retains its position at the heart of global sports culture, a testament to its universal appeal and enduring popularity.

Essay On Football

Football comes under the family of sports. Football is known to involve team spirit, unity and sportsmanship. It requires its players to have seamless strength, build and fitness. Football is a 90-minute game. The game of football consists of 2 teams containing 11 members each. The objective of each team in football is to score a goal by kicking the football into the opponent's goalpost. Here are a few sample essays on the topic ‘football’.

100 Words Essay On Football

200 words essay on football, 500 words essay on football.

Essay On Football

Football is played by 11 players on both sides in order to put the ball into the opposing goal. To play the game, players can use any part of their body except their arms or hands. Only the goalkeeper is permitted to use his hands to touch the ball. The goalkeeper is the last line of defence, and his sole responsibility is to prevent the ball from entering the net.

The team is made up of three parts: attack, midfield, and defence. The game is a test of stamina, skill, and, most importantly, teamwork. The goal is to score as many goals as possible within the duration of 90 minutes. The team with the maximum number of goals at the end of regulation time wins.

Football's first rules and regulations were written down in England in the late 1800s. The game has evolved since then. To keep up with the game, the playing style became much more complex, and more rules were added. Football is now one of the most-watched sports on the planet. The modern game of football is made up of attackers, who lead the entire team, and midfielders, who form the team's core and serve as the link between the forwards and defenders. Defenders defend against opposition attacks and protect the goal. Different formations, strategies, tactics, and techniques emerged over time, making the game more fun and interesting.

It is the coach's or the manager's responsibility to manage the entire squad. The coach may make three substitutions during a 90-minute game divided into two halves. A total of four referees oversee the entire event, including one referee, two linesmen, and a fourth official. It is the responsibility of the referees to ensure that the game runs smoothly, and the referee's decision is the final word in any case. Football is popular all over the world because of the zeal with which its players play the game. It is not an easy task to play football for a total of 90 minutes. It takes a lot of stamina as well as world-class ball control and mastery.

Professional footballers are extremely dedicated athletes who start playing football as a child and are scouted by big clubs that train them in world-class facilities. To perform on the world stage, the players must master the ball and have a brilliant footballing mind. These are not easy skills to master and necessitate years of dedication and practice.

Football Players | Pele, Maradona, Johan Cryuff, and Ronaldinho are some of the greatest footballers of all time. The current football era is dominated by two all-time greats, Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo. There are many heated debates about who is better, but one thing is certain: both are professional athletes with great desire and discipline.

FIFA World Cup | The FIFA World Cup, which takes place every four years, is the most important international tournament. The final event is attended by 32 countries who qualify for it. Only one team is crowned World Champion at the end of the competition. France won the World Cup in 2018 under the direction of Coach Didier Deschamps. As of 2022, the FIFA world cup was held in Qatar and the final match was won by Argentina. The four qualifying teams for the finals of FIFA 2022 were Argentina, Croatia, France and Morocco.

Football requires a high level of physical fitness. The players must run and stay active until the end of the game. They must chase the ball and intercept opposing players at all times; they must defend their goals at all times. Head balls, chest passes, rabonas, and scissor kicks are all artistic techniques. To play the game, players can use any part of their body except their arms or hands. Only the goalkeeper is permitted to use his hands to touch the ball. The goalkeeper is the last line of defence, and his sole responsibility is to prevent the ball from entering the net. Professional football requires a great deal of dedication and discipline. Talented players are scouted when they are young, and they are trained in academies for several years before being scouted by bigger clubs based on their performance.

Football History and Rule-Based Management Essay

The origin of soccer/football dates back to about 2,000-3,000 years ago and is associated with China, Rome, Greece, and Central America (Goldblatt, 2008). Football was transitioned by England through the creation of rules that are still used to govern it today. Initially, rules were few but as the game evolved, more were created. Football gradually morphed from a recreation activity into a lucrative business and a competitive sport that is recognized globally (Orejan, 2011).

Football is played between two teams on a field with two goals at each end. The aim is to score more than the opponent to win. Each team comprises eleven players who occupy different positions on opposite sides of the field (Goldblatt, 2008). Standard playtime for a single session is 45 minutes and an entire game consists of two sessions. Therefore, a whole game lasts for 90 minutes (Orejan, 2011). Many recognized bodies oversee football in different regions.

The main governing body is FIFA and its main role is to organize and promote international football tournaments (Goldblatt, 2008). Regional confederations that work together with FIFA include Oceania Football Confederation (OFC), Confederation of African Football (CAF), Asian Football Confederation (AFC), and Union of European Football Associations (UEFA). Each country has an association that oversees football activities within its borders (Goldblatt, 2008).

The sport is governed by 17 laws that are contained in the official Laws of the Game published by the International Federation of Association Football (FIFA) (Orejan, 2011). Each law contains guidelines that direct the actions and behaviors of players on and off the field. Players are barred from touching the ball using their hands. However, the goalkeeper can do so, but only in the penalty area (Orejan, 2011). Outfield players use their legs, heads, and torso to kick or pass the ball. If the teams’ scores are equal, the referee either declares the game a draw or gives both teams additional time. Penalty kicks are given if a player is fouled within the penalty area or if two teams draw and a winner has to be announced.

Fouls against other players are punishable by a penalty or a free-kick based on the location of the foul in the field (Goldblatt, 2008). A referee punishes players based on the severity of fouls committed. A red card means that a player has been dismissed from the game and cannot be replaced. Two yellow cards issued during the same game result in a red card (Orejan, 2011). A decision by a referee is considered final and unchangeable. The final score is also unchangeable even if the referee made biased or wrong decisions that favored one of the teams. A game is overseen by a referee in collaboration with two assistants.

World Cup is the major international football competition that involves teams from all parts of the world. It is organized by FIFA and involves 32 teams that represent different countries and continents (Orejan, 2011). Other football contests include Summer Olympic Games and annual continental championships that are organized by continental confederations in different regions. Football is played by more than 250 million people around the world (Orejan, 2011).

It is more famous in England, Argentina, Spain, Netherlands, Germany, Russia, Portugal, Uruguay, France, and Turkey (Goldblatt, 2008). These countries have produced some of the best footballers in the world such as Pele, Maradona, Lionel Messi, Zinedine Zidane, and Cristiano Ronaldo among others. Also, some of these countries have won the World Cup on several occasions.

As in India, a popular game of cricket, many children keep it as a hobby. But, for me, my favorite game is football.

About My Favorite Football Game

Football is one of the most popular sports in the world. It is played in nearly 100 countries. It is an outdoor game played between two teams. Each of these groups has 11 members. The pitch is rectangular and has a goal post at each end.

The main goal of the football game is to score a goal against an opposing team. The team that scores the highest number of goals compared to the other team wins the game. As the name suggests, the player plays the game by kicking the ball with his foot. Also, another name given to the game is “Soccer.”

Football is the most popular sport in the world. It helps many to find relief from stress, teaches cooperation, behaves well, and brings strength to fans and athletes. It is a wonderful, fun and exciting game.

Game football serves as the most important part of a person’s life. It keeps people fit. In addition, it protects them from many diseases. Therefore, physical recreation is necessary for them.

Soccer is one of the most popular sports in the world. It is played in nearly 100 countries. It is an outdoor game played between two teams. Each of these groups has 11 members. The pitch is rectangular and has a goal post at each end.

History of the Football Game

Football is said to be an ancient Greek sport known as the “Harpaston.” It was played kicking the ball with the feet of two teams. It was a tough game aimed at scoring a goal by kicking or running the ball over the goal line.

Played without restrictions, number of players, restricted size, and much more. Its origin is said to have originated in the twelfth century. Later, football became popular in England, and its rules began to apply when it became a major institutional sport of the 19th century.

In addition, it was broadcast in the US but was severely banned in schools due to increased violence. But it was officially approved by the committee in 1905.

How to play a football game?

Football is a popular sport that keeps players fit and healthy. It develops their team spirit, a sense of tolerance, and a sense of humor. It is played 90 minutes to two halves of 45 minutes, with a 15 minute break.

The game has two teams with 11 players in each team. Here, the players have to kick the ball with their feet and take the goal by placing the ball on the opposing team’s goal post. In order to counter the goal scored by the opposing team’s players, there are goalkeepers on both sides.

Players are prohibited from touching the ball with their hands without the goalkeeper. The team with the most goals is declared the winner and the other is considered the loser. The game of football is run by two runners, one on each side and the referee.

All players are warned to follow the rules while playing hard. It has been an international game and played as a World Cup tournament every four years in different countries around the world.

Rules in Game of Thrones

As with other sports, there are certain rules and regulations in the game of football. First, the ball should not be touched by hand. When the ball is touched, the other team gets a free-kick.

There is a small area near the pole. ‘D’ is a local game. The ‘D’ boundary is at least 10 yards from the pole. When a player touches the ball, the opposing team receives a penalty.

In addition, there are other rules. The second most important rule is the “offside law”. In this law; when a player crosses the back line, he becomes off-side. If you are a big fan of football you should know who the defenders are.

In this game, the players are divided into three categories. The first section says “Forward.” These are the players who put the ball in the goal post. Section 2 says “Abdominal Player.”

They pass the ball to the forward player. Section 3 says “Defenders.” Defenders prevent other team players from placing the ball on the post.

In addition, if a player injures and abuses another team player, the referee gives him a “Yellow Card” or a “Red Card.” The yellow card is a warning card, and the red card is a suspension card. This card stops playing a football game.

As mentioned earlier, a sports person plays a game in a rectangular position. Here, the length of the area is 110m, and the width is 75m. There are lines marked in the field known as yards; the middle line is a line of 50 yards and the line next to the pole is a line of 10 yards.

Each team has 2 leading midfielders, one from the right and one left out, 4 defenders and 2 defenders, and a goalkeeper. Here, players are forbidden to touch the ball with their hands… Only a goalkeeper can do that.

Why is football my favorite sport?

For me, football is my favorite sport. It has been a source of great joy and excitement for me and my family. I was playing for my school’s soccer team on the offensive side and felt a rush in my veins whenever I moved the ball forward to the enemy goal post.

If I score, all my teammates will come and enjoy me. I’ve been watching football, and Christino Ronaldo is my favorite player. You play as a forward player and really great.

Indeed, he is the best known player in the world of football. I watch all his games, and he is my role model. I even tried to imitate his movement while I was playing . Football is said to be an ancient Greek sport known as the “Harpaston.” It was played kicking the ball with the feet of two teams. It was a tough game aimed at scoring a goal by kicking or running the ball over the goal line.

The Importance of Playing a Football Game

Soccer has also been a source of exercise. Played for 90 minutes and a 15-minute break after 45 minutes, it is a game that allows a person to run around the stadium every 90 minutes.

Therefore, a 90 mins cardio workout will certainly keep people healthy and immune to disease. Playing soccer refreshes the body. And the best part is that it’s a team game, so you’ll get a sense of hard work and team building. Working in groups will certainly help one in the future.

If you play football regularly, it will offer many benefits such as improving fitness skills, increasing concentration, mental and social benefits, increasing aerobic and anaerobic fitness, and so on. It benefits people of all ages.

Some of the most important benefits of playing a game of football are –

  •   The game of football makes a person punctual, calm and well-mannered
  • The game improves cardiovascular health and engages the cardiovascular system
  • It encourages players to work together.
  • Football develops the level of competence skills.
  • It helps to improve health habits, muscle strength, gain lean muscle mass, lose more body fat throughout life.
  • Game football develops mental and physical strength
  • It provides social and psychological benefits by helping players deal with frustration and train with good play.
  • The game of football improves self-confidence and quick thinking and improves flexibility.
  • Reduce stress by developing a positive attitude.

Football, in every game, represents life. Strive to be successful and you must know how to work and interact with others as in football; only the team spirit will lead you to play and win against the opponent.

In life, you keep running after a goal and hit one. Therefore, children and children should be encouraged to play soccer at school and at home in order to be mentally and physically healthy. I hope you enjoyed this article of my favorite football game.

essay on football and its rules

10 Great Longform Essays About Football in American Culture

Pre-superbowl reading—or a way to avoid it completely.

Football is not the most literary of sports. Baseball has a much more intellectual pedigree, fueled by an intense American nostalgia, literary and otherwise; boxing has drawn the attention of Ernest Hemingway, Norman Mailer, Joyce Carol Oates and Katherine Dunn; tennis only needs David Foster Wallace (but Álvaro Enrigue is good too); and even soccer has  Among the Thugs (not to mention Monty Python’s “ Literary Football Discussion “); American football, though, can only be associated with a few good works of literature—though there are some out there . But literary or not, football is part of the fabric of American culture, and so you’re likely aware that this weekend it’s throwing its grand annual competitive soiree: the Superbowl. If you’d rather be reading, but still want to engage in the cultural moment, I recommend starting with one of these great longform essays about football in contemporary American culture, which cover everything from our evolving understanding of CTE to football’s relationship to television, domestic violence, and yes, of course, Trump. If you’ll be watching the game, well, read up anyway—there will be lots of time to talk about all these essays during the million and one commercial breaks.

Reid Forgrave, “ The Concussion Diaries: One High School Football Player’s Secret Struggle with CTE ” GQ , 2016

A heartbreaking and humane essay written, in part, to honor the last wishes of a young ex-football player who killed himself after years of struggle with CTE—chronic traumatic encephalopathy—and asked his family to share his words with the world. On football culture, toughness, family, and fear.

Zac left instructions: Print his story off his laptop, post it to Facebook, use the pain of his life and too-early death to warn the world about CTE. Get people like us—football fans, football players, football lifers—to face the truth about people like him.

And now we have. Those were his instructions, so that’s what his family did. So now what?

We could ban football. (But we love football.) We could allow people to play football only once they turn 18, which is what Omalu has proposed. (And what happens when 18-year-old athletic phenoms—freight trains who have never learned to tackle properly—are suddenly turned loose on one another? Is that better?) We could take away tackling. (Sorry, no one’s watching the National Flag Football League.) We could build a safer helmet. (Which will only encourage players to use their heads as weapons.) We could have a consistent concussion protocol through all levels of football. (We already do in the NFL. Ask Cam Newton how well it’s working.)

Every solution ends up not solving enough of the problem.

And for most of us, this is perfectly okay. The paradox of CTE’s discovery is that it’s given most of us a sneaky ethical out, hasn’t it? No professional football player can claim now to be unaware of the risks. It’s a free country. We’re all adults here.

Unless we’re not adults. Unless we’re kids, like Zac was. Can we really let kids keep doing this? If so, how? Now what?

Mark Edmundson, “ Football: The Lure of the Game ” Los Angeles Review of Books , 2014

In this personal love letter to football, Edmundson considers the beauty and joy of the sport in poetic prose—and even compares football to poetry (“they overlap more than you think,” he writes) as well as America itself (violence and grace; freedom and exploitation; glory and ignominy: terrible beauty).

I sometimes wonder (being, I suppose, of a wondering disposition) what it is that draws us to the game. By Saturday afternoon in the fall—assuming I’ve kept away from mid-week games—I’m feeling something like an addict’s need. The urge to see some football really does feel nearly physical. It’s an American hunger, this interest in the game: I’m almost sure of that. Football’s played in Canada but, despite impressive marketing efforts, it hasn’t caught on in Europe or anywhere else. I don’t think it ever will. That is unless America and the world become synonymous, the way Rome became synonymous with the world for some time. Football is the American game, like rock is the American music, and black speak is the American vernacular, burgers and fries are (like it or lump it) American food, and golden beer served at sub-zero temp is the American drink.

If visitors from a galaxy far away landed in our precincts, landed in New York City, say, and asked us to show them (not tell, show them) what we were all about, how would we respond? I’d be tempted to take them to the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the palace of Western culture. Or I might be inclined to guide them up between the sentinel lions at the New York Public Library and into the great reading room. But in either case, I’d be wrong. I’d be idealizing. No, surely the best place to take them, if they wanted to see America, would be out to the Meadowlands to watch the Giants go to war with the Redskins, or take on the Dallas Cowboys, blue versus gray, the Civil War one more time. Maybe better, one would take them up close to a flat screen TV—high definition, surround sound, the works—and let our visitors view the images that have now become, if this is possible, more life-like than life. And you would point to the screen in joy and consternation and sometimes in dismay or something close to horror. And you’d be tempted to say: This is who we are. This is what we Americans are about. But then, what exactly would you mean?

Chuck Klosterman, “ Will Violence Save Football? ” GQ , 2015

Klosterman’s essay about football discusses and dismisses the two prevailing theories about football—that it will die out, and that it will change dramatically—instead arguing that it’s actually violence, and the tendency of fans of a widely decried pleasure to close ranks, that will keep the sport around. His argument is, in 2017, frighteningly familiar and relevant.

A few months after being hired as head football coach at the University of Michigan, Jim Harbaugh was profiled on the HBO magazine show Real Sports. It was a wildly entertaining segment, heavily slanted toward the intellection that Harbaugh is a lunatic. One of the last things Harbaugh said in the interview was this: “I love football. Love it. Love it. I think it’s the last bastion of hope for toughness in America in men, in males.” Immediately following the segment, the reporter (Andrea Kremer) sat down with Real Sports host Bryant Gumbel to anecdotally unpack the story we’d all just watched. Gumbel expressed shock over Harbaugh’s final sentiment. To anyone working in the media (or even to anyone who cares about the media), Harbaugh’s position seemed sexist and ultra-reactionary, so much so that Rush Limbaugh felt the need to support it on his radio show.

This is what happens when any populist, uncomfortable thought is expressed on television.

There’s an embedded assumption within all arguments regarding the doomed nature of football. The assumption is that the game is even more violent and damaging than it superficially appears, and that as more people realize this (and/or refuse to deny the medical evidence verifying that damage), the game’s fan support will disappear. The mistake made by those advocating this position is their certitude that this perspective is self-evident. It’s not. These advocates remind me of an apocryphal quote attributed to film critic Pauline Kael after the 1972 presidential election: “How could Nixon have won? I don’t know one person who voted for him.” Now, Kael never actually said this.†† But that erroneous quote survives as the best shorthand example for why smart people tend to be wrong as often as their not-so-smart peers—they work from the flawed premise that their worldview is standard. The contemporary stance on football’s risk feels unilateral, because nobody goes around saying, “Modern life is not violent enough.” Yet this sentiment quietly exists. And what those who believe it say instead is, “I love football. It’s the last bastion of hope for toughness in America.” It’s not difficult to imagine a future where the semantic distance between those statements is nonexistent. And if that happens, football will change from a popular leisure pastime to an unpopular political necessity.

††What she actually said was: “I live in a rather special world. I only know one person who voted for Nixon. Where they are I don’t know. They’re outside my ken. But sometimes when I’m in a theater I can feel them.”

Timothy Michael Law, “ Football’s Cancer ” Los Angeles Review of Books , 2015

There’s more than one kind of violence at play here; this essay tackles systematic racism and exploitation as the primary problems with football in America.

Commentators are presently drumming up hysteria over concussions in the NFL and criticizing the sport for its overt violence, but there is a more surreptitious malady. Outbursts of violence in society, according to Žižek, sidetrack us. The violence in the background, structural and systemic, is more pernicious.

If football is ailing, it is not because it is too dangerous but because high-stakes players have figured out how to use it to create enormous wealth by exploiting a working class of athletes while minimizing their responsibilities to them. Economic exploitation is the cancer spreading throughout the body of the sport, proliferating cells as it corrodes the health of its overwhelmingly black workforce.

Most of the players are black, the fans white. For these few hours on Saturday, white college kids, alumni, and Bulldog fans who have come from near and far will act as if they have seen gods on earth. The scene is electric, and you might be easily fooled into thinking that here is proof of post-racial America. Once you’ve lived outside the South, you realize how remarkable it is that football’s popularity is greatest in Southern states that were and remain the most segregated, where antebellum hierarchies are reflected in attitudes outside of stadiums but where, during fleeting moments of athletic competition, predominately white audiences cheer madly for black athletes. Racism persists in the South in ways that some younger Americans elsewhere can no longer fathom, but black athletes and entertainers have been making white audiences (in both the North and South) laugh and cheer for centuries—so long as they are staying in character. A hip-hop artist and an athlete may sing to us, rap to us, play for us, but we still want to control the script.

Žižek cautioned that we often fail to notice systemic evils because secondary and tertiary concerns distract us. To address malignant biases and our own propensity to exploit requires the kind of uncomfortable work that keeps many fearful of seeing a therapist. The media fascination with concussions allows them to appear serious about football’s problems, but since they are part of the profiteering, exploitative machine, we should never expect to find this urgent confrontation among football’s talking heads.

In not a few ways, football’s cancer is the same cancer that has attempted to silence and demonize the #BlackLivesMatter movement. Young black men remain useful as long as they turn a profit for the managerial class and don’t shout too loudly about their labor conditions and opportunity. The impulse that drives many to consider football’s maladies of little consequence is the same impulse that drives the #AllLivesMatter response, and this impulse stems ultimately from a recalcitrant attitude that refuses to look squarely in the mirror, beyond the surface Žižek warned about.

Malcolm Gladwell, “ Offensive Play ” The New Yorker , 2009

In which Malcolm Gladwell asks the question: “How different are dogfighting and football?”

These are dogs that will never live a normal life. But the kind of crime embodied by dogfighting is so morally repellent that it demands an extravagant gesture in response. In a fighting dog, the quality that is prized above all others is the willingness to persevere, even in the face of injury and pain. A dog that will not do that is labelled a “cur,” and abandoned. A dog that keeps charging at its opponent is said to possess “gameness,” and game dogs are revered.

In one way or another, plenty of organizations select for gameness. The Marine Corps does so, and so does medicine, when it puts young doctors through the exhausting rigors of residency. But those who select for gameness have a responsibility not to abuse that trust: if you have men in your charge who would jump off a cliff for you, you cannot march them to the edge of the cliff—and dogfighting fails this test. Gameness, Carl Semencic argues, in “The World of Fighting Dogs” (1984), is no more than a dog’s “desire to please an owner at any expense to itself.” The owners, Semencic goes on,

understand this desire to please on the part of the dog and capitalize on it. At any organized pit fight in which two dogs are really going at each other wholeheartedly, one can observe the owner of each dog changing his position at pit-side in order to be in sight of his dog at all times. The owner knows that seeing his master rooting him on will make a dog work all the harder to please its master.

This is why Michael Vick’s dogs weren’t euthanized. The betrayal of loyalty requires an act of social reparation.

Professional football players, too, are selected for gameness. When Kyle Turley was knocked unconscious, in that game against the Packers, he returned to practice four days later because, he said, “I didn’t want to miss a game.” Once, in the years when he was still playing, he woke up and fell into a wall as he got out of bed. “I start puking all over,” he recalled. “So I said to my wife, ‘Take me to practice.’ I didn’t want to miss practice.” The same season that he was knocked unconscious, he began to have pain in his hips. He received three cortisone shots, and kept playing. At the end of the season, he discovered that he had a herniated disk. He underwent surgery, and four months later was back at training camp. “They put me in full-contact practice from day one,” he said. “After the first day, I knew I wasn’t right. They told me, ‘You’ve had the surgery. You’re fine. You should just fight through it.’ It’s like you’re programmed. You’ve got to go without question— I’m a warrior. I can block that out of my mind . I go out, two days later. Full contact. Two-a-days. My back locks up again. I had re-herniated the same disk that got operated on four months ago, and bulged the disk above it.” As one of Turley’s old coaches once said, “He plays the game as it should be played, all out,” which is to say that he put the game above his own well-being.

Jamil Smith, “ The Necessity of Football ” New Republic , 2015

In this essay, Smith, a onetime associate producer at NFL Films—where his job was to assemble glorifying montages—argues that it actually the inadequacies  of football, and not its saving graces, that make it so necessary to the American experience.

I have no excuse, really. Every time I’ve thought about leaving the sport behind, I remember my favorite photograph: a black-and-white shot my mother took of me in my football uniform in the eighth grade, standing next to my father and smiling after a win. But nostalgia is a reason to love the game, not a reason to need it. Perhaps, then, this is where I should tell you why—even in the wake of Omalu’s revelations—I feel we still need football. Not to rescue the NFL’s largely black labor force from its humble origins, or to entertain the masses that refuse to let it go in the wake of mounting tragedies. We need it partially because football serves as a kind of fun-house mirror for our national character.

The reflection comes in various forms: social movements, national tragedy, political spectacle, and yes, our sports. And we are a dramatic country, so much so that the volume of theatrics we see in every corner of our lives dulls our senses. We need more, and we need it louder. And in spectator sports, we want to see the best versions of ourselves reflected back at us, or else why would we consider it entertainment? We want to believe that inside that arena, everything will be all right because our men are the strongest, and our fight is the hardest. This is why between 2012 and 2015 the Department of Defense paid 18 NFL teams a total of more than $5.6 million for marketing and advertising, including flying military bombers over stadiums at taxpayers’ expense. It’s also why we watch hit montages week after week, delighting in the crack of the pads or the punch of the music without wondering whether that player just got pushed a bit further toward CTE. Football marries artfulness to brutality, providing the most honest interpretation of American character that we have available, and I enjoy football despite its horrors because I have learned to do the same in my life in America.

The problem is that too few of us recognize ourselves in the beauty and the carnage the NFL presents each Sunday. The game won’t change because we’re not changing. I hope a new audience will be exposed to Dr. Bennet Omalu’s story and understand that the only way to get football to change is to present its faults in an uncompromising fashion, pressuring the NFL and those who love the sport to face themselves and do better. Omalu exemplifies a model of America in which its citizens, in virtually every political context, work to change this nation for the better. Abandoning football won’t fix the sport—Americans need it so that, one day, we might learn to see ourselves for who we truly are.

Louisa Thomas, “ Together We Make Football ” Grantland, 2014

A look at the NFL’s history of domestic violence—players who commit it, fans and teams who ignore it—and what that says about sports culture and the myth of football as a “family.”

Domestic violence does not happen on a football field. It happens in bedrooms, cars, parking lots, elevators. Intimate-partner violence and sexual assault are epidemic in the military. They are pervasive in Silicon Valley, on college campuses, in small Alaskan towns. They exist in all countries and in all times. Getting rid of football would do nothing to change this.

And yet there are connections between a culture that sidelines women and disrespects them, a culture that disrespects women and tolerates violence toward them, and a culture that tolerates violence toward them and commits violence toward them. Nearly half—48 percent—of all arrests for violent crimes among NFL players are arrests for domestic violence.

Men have worried that masculinity was under threat for as long as football has been around. The sport as we know it, after all, began during an era and in a class so nervous about decline that there was a condition, neurasthenia, to describe men’s anxiety. The easiest way to prove you were a man was to adopt an attitude of aggression. Those who were vulnerable or different were, and are, not merely unwelcome. It’s as if they were contagious. It is as if they were dangerous.

The NFL calls itself a family. If that’s the case, it’s a family of fathers and sons but not wives and daughters. It’s a family that more closely resembles the mob than a family connected by blood or love. It’s a family that protects its own by cutting others, a family that privileges loyalty over what’s right. But loyalty goes only so far in the NFL—because at some not-so-distant point, the family turns into a business. When concussions enter into it, or salary caps, or age, the family becomes about winning Sunday’s big game or about the business’s bottom line. If it’s a family, then it’s a fucked-up family.

Nicholas Dawidoff, “ The Comprehensive Illusion of Football ” The New Yorker , 2015

Television changes everything—including football.

“Before modern TV, it must have felt more abstractly gladiatorial,” Richard Linklater, the filmmaker, who was himself a Texas high school quarterback, says. We were discussing the way that these days, on television, you can impart personalities to the players and coaches on the screen. The N.F.L. has wired participants for sound and improved its broadcasts’ camera angles and photograph definition. Camera operators pan the field and sidelines for raw reactions. The emotion fans tend to feel most keenly is outrage, and, following along, producers have lately specialized in conveying assorted shades of indignation. We think of Giants coach Tom Coughlin as a man perpetually aggrieved and consider Buffalo Bills coach Rex Ryan a puerile teen-ager—after all, that’s how they behave in our homes. Of course, both men are far more complex. “Once you can see their eyes, everything changes, and you think you know them,” Linklater says. “TV does that—that powerful, possessory bond with the audience. The public might fawn over actors they know from movies, but if they know you from television, they act like they’re a relative. They really think they have access, and they almost consume them.”

Part of football’s appeal is the violence, which gives it the feeling of a real-life action movie. But the violence has always been risky for TV, as well as for the players. Long before there was any public controversy concerning the long-term effects of football-related blows to the head, TV sought to make the game more palatable by magnifying its balletic beauty and deëmphasizing the brute concussive aggression of the hitting. One of the game’s most notorious collisions took place on “Monday Night Football” in 1985, when Giants linebacker Lawrence Taylor sacked Washington Redskins quarterback Joe Theismann. The reverse camera angle revealed Theismann suffering a grotesque compound leg fracture. That was too much reality for family television. In the decades since then, much to the dismay of defensive coaches, the most revealing football rules changes have put restraints on contact and otherwise eased the task of completing passes. Part of this is that America loves touchdowns, and another piece of it is that passing looks prettier on TV. But concerning ourselves with the graceful choreographies of receivers and defensive backs also relieved us of the unsettling responsibility for witnessing what’s going down off-camera.

Paul Solotaroff with Ron Borges, “ The Gangster in the Huddle ” Rolling Stone , 2013

An in-depth profile of former Patriots tight end and convicted murderer Aaron Hernandez—who, four years later, has yet another murder trial coming up in less than two weeks.

Most people, even self-important stars blowing thousands on bottle-shape women, might have simmered down about now. But the 23-year-old Aaron Hernandez wasn’t like most people; for ages, he hadn’t even been like himself. The sweet, goofy kid from Bristol, Connecticut, with the klieg-light smile and ex-thug dad who’d turned his life around to raise two phenom sons– that Aaron Hernandez had barely been heard from in the seven hard years since his father was snatched away, killed in his prime by a medical error that left his boys soul-sick and lost. Once in a great while, the good Aaron would surface, phoning one of his college coaches to tell him he loved him and to talk to the man’s kids for hours, or stopping Robert Kraft, the Patriots’ owner, to kiss him on the cheek and thank him damply. There was such hunger in that kid for a father’s hand, and such greatness itching to get out, that coach after coach had covered for him whenever the bad Aaron showed–the violent, furious kid who was dangerous to all, most particularly, it seems, to his friends.

Robert Lipsyte, “ Donald Trump Represents the Worst of Football Culture ” The Nation , 2017

An essay that bemoans Trump—a failed team owner himself—as emblematic of the worst aspects of “jock-culture”, but looks to Colin Kaepernick and others like him as a ray of hope.

His kind of boastful, bullying, blowfish persona is tolerated in locker rooms (as in sales offices, barracks, trading floors, and legislatures), just as long as the big dog can deliver. Which he has done. It’s no surprise that his close pals and business associates in SportsWorld include two other notorious P.T. Barnums, boxing’s Don King and wrestling’s Vince McMahon (whose wife, Linda, is now Trump’s pick to head the Small Business Administration).

Another typical jock-culture trait is rolling over for the alpha(est) dog in your arena, be it the team leader, coach, owner, or even the president of Russia. One wonders, had Trump become a successful NFL owner, would he have wimped out as completely as New England Patriots’ owner Robert Kraft did when Russian President Vladimir Putin pocketed his Super Bowl ring in 2005 and walked out of their Moscow meeting room with it. It was never returned.

As the season ended, Kaepernick’s teammates awarded him their Len Eshmont Award for “inspirational and courageous play,” making a mockery of reports in the media that he had been alienating the rest of the team. Edwards describes the media and the sports establishment as clueless when it comes to Kaepernick’s growing support among athletes—a phenomenon that promises “some turbulent times over the upcoming Trump era.”

Kaepernick’s most transcendent transgression has been the way he punctured the comfort of football’s sweaty sanctuary, letting in both light and some hard truths—including this reality: that objectified and extravagantly well paid performers can still have real thoughts about the world outside the white lines, a world becoming more and more perilous for those who think Trumpball should not be the national pastime.

Kickoffs will look radically different in the NFL next year. Here's how and why

NFL owners voted this week to dramatically change rules around kickoffs — including the elimination of a team's ability to attempt a surprise onside kick, like the Jacksonville Jaguars did in a 2022 game against the Kansas City Chiefs.

The upcoming NFL season will feature what may be the most significant change to gameplay in professional football in years: a dramatic alteration to rules around the kickoff, one of the game's most iconic plays.

Kickoffs, which occur about 10 times every NFL game and thousands of times over the course of each season, have long been the subject of scrutiny due to a heightened risk of injury for players.

But while alterations to kickoffs over the past decade or so helped make them safer, they had also made the play largely perfunctory.

Playoff thriller between Bills and Chiefs puts NFL on defense over its overtime rules

At this week's annual meeting of NFL team owners, owners voted to radically alter the way kickoffs are executed in what officials say they hope will be a best-of-both-worlds approach designed to reduce injuries while making the play more exciting.

"It is an exciting day," said Darren Rizzi , the special teams coordinator for the New Orleans Saints, who helped develop the new rules. "We feel like we've revived a dying play."

Under the new rules, the kicking team's kicker will continue to kick from the 35-yard line. But rather than be flanked by his teammates, the rest of the kicking team will line up at their opponent's 40-yard line, eliminating the traditional running head start. The returning team will field up to two returners in the backfield, and the rest of the team will line up in a new "set up zone" between the 30- and 35-yard line.

Besides the kicker and returners, no players from either side will be allowed to move until a returner touches the ball or the ball hits the ground. Fair catches, in which a returner could signal that they would catch the ball but not attempt a return, will no longer be allowed.

Another major aspect of the change is the elimination of a team's ability to call a surprise onside kick, a special form of kickoff in which a team attempts to kick the ball to one of their own players. Because onside kicks are typically unsuccessful, they are usually relegated to desperation scenarios at the end of a game. But teams had occasionally opted to take their opponents by surprise by attempting an onside kick earlier in the game. That option is now gone, as teams must announce an onside kick attempt in advance.

Still, team officials felt that the change was worthwhile; the new rules were approved by a vote of 29-3.

"We feel like we've made this play a heckuva lot safer for the players. We're going to eliminate some of the big collisions," Rizzi said.

Former NFL players speak out against the league's handling of disability benefits

For years, as greater awareness of injuries have influenced football, kickoffs have been under the safety microscope. Players sprinting down the field would collide at high speeds, and injuries disproportionately occur during returns.

In response, in the 2010s, the league tweaked kickoff rules to reduce the likelihood of returns by incentivizing what are known as touchbacks.

When a kicker boots the ball into the endzone, the opposing team's returner can choose to kneel rather than attempt a return; the result is called a touchback, and the returning team would receive the ball at the 25-yard line. (Under the new rule, touchbacks will now be placed at the 30-yard line.)

A touchback occurs automatically if the ball sails out the back of the endzone entirely. After a rule change in 2011 that reduced the distance from the kickoff to the opposing end zone, the league reported that the number of concussions on kickoffs was reduced by 40%.

In the 2023 season, about three-quarters of all kickoffs resulted in a touchback, a dramatic reversal from the pre-2011 era, in which roughly 80% of kickoffs were returned.

How The NFL's New Rule On Protesting Is Being Perceived By Players

How The NFL's New Rule On Protesting Is Being Perceived By Players

The result: Players were safer, but the kickoff itself had largely become what team officials called a "dead play."

"I'm all for it," Kansas City Chiefs coach Andy Reid told the Associated Press. "You have 2,000 dead plays. Nobody wants to see that. It'll add excitement and newness."

The new kickoff rules were pioneered by the XFL, a minor professional football league that featured a variety of altered rules designed to make games faster and more exciting. (The league has since been folded into the USFL.)

The alteration is also expected to increase the value of special teams players — the players on any NFL squad who typically haven't yet made the cut for a full-time spot on an offensive or defensive lineup. For many players, a special teams position is a way to prove their worth on an NFL roster.

essay on football and its rules

Manchester City's goal machine was simply unstoppable, terrorising defenders in domestic and European competition as Pep Guardiola's men secured the club's first treble by lifting the UEFA Champions League, Premier League and FA Cup trophies.

In 33 games in those competitions during the qualifying period he found the net 28 times, with his combination of pace, power and finishing ability proving too much for the best defenders in the world. His scoring return and ice-cool approach is made all the more impressive by the fact the Norway international only turned 23 in July 2023.

On top of his club honours, Haaland claimed a host of personal accolades, including the European Golden Shoe, the English Premier League Golden Boot, and the rare double of being named English Premier League Player and Young Player of the season.

Did you know? It is often referenced that Haaland’s father Alf-Inge is a former footballer who represented Norway and played at the highest level, but his mother – Gry Marita Braut – was also known for her athletic prowess, claiming heptathlon titles in their home country during the 1990s.

Kylian Mbappe Kylian Mbappe

essay on football and its rules

Mbappe picked up from where he left off in the FIFA World Cup 2022™ final when he returned to domestic action in late December 2022, scoring from the penalty spot in the 90th minute to help Paris Saint-Germain to victory over Strasbourg in Ligue 1.

The fleet-footed France international ensured that the capital club would go on to claim their eighth domestic title of the last 11 years with his metronomic goalscoring exploits during the qualifying period for The Best 2023, finding the net 17 times in the final 20 league games of the campaign, including one phenomenal spell of nine goals in six matches.

Those exploits saw the brilliant forward named as the Ligue 1 Player of the Year and also take the honour of Ligue 1 top scorer, as he recovered from the disappointment of his World Cup final hat-trick being in vain.

Did you know? Mbappe is just four goals behind all-time leading FIFA World Cup scorer Miroslav Klose, with the former Germany international having netted 16 in 24 games across four editions of the tournament. The 24-year-old Frenchman already has 12 from 14 appearances in 2018 and 2022.

Lionel Messi Lionel Messi

essay on football and its rules

What else is left to say about the player who has won every major domestic, international and individual honour in the game, and continues to mesmerise global audiences at the age of 36?

Messi, who was named The Best Men's Player in 2022, returned from leading Argentina to glory in Qatar to help PSG lift their latest Ligue 1 crown, the second of his spell in France, while he was also named in the Ligue 1 team of the season and ended the campaign at the top of the division’s assists chart.

A new challenge presented itself in July, with the diminutive genius, who now has over 100 goals for his country and is the all-time top scorer in the top five European leagues, moving across the Atlantic to join Inter Miami, a transfer greeted with the rapture and fanfare fully deserving of one of the game’s all-time greats. Did you know? Messi is the only player to register an assist in five World Cups. His closest challengers are Pele, Grzegorz Lato, Diego Maradona and David Beckham, who set up goals in three editions apiece.

How The Best FIFA Men’s Player Award finalists were determined How The Best FIFA Men’s Player Award finalists were determined

From the 12-player shortlist, each voter made their first, second and third choices for the prize.

Points were given to nominees depending on where they were placed (five points for first, three for second and one for third).

Nominated national team captains could not vote for themselves.

Selections from the four voting groups – coaches, captains, journalists, and fans – each counted for 25 per cent of the total vote, irrespective of the number of voters from each group.

The Best FIFA Men’s Player Award will be presented to the individual with the most points.

If finalists are tied on points, the award will be bestowed on the individual who has received the most first-choice selections from their own group of voters.

The voting procedure for The Best FIFA Men’s Player Award is supervised by independent observers. Results will be published in full on FIFA.com following the awards ceremony on 15 January 2024.

Australian rules football organizers unapologetic for stance on illicit drug testing

  • Copy Link copied

MELBOURNE, Australia (AP) — The governing body for Australian rules football was aware of players undertaking screening for illicit substances to avoid detection in game-related doping tests and its chief executive on Wednesday said he was “unapologetic” for it.

Federal lawmaker Andrew Wilkie told Parliament of allegations made by the Melbourne Demons’ former club doctor and president that players had faked injuries to skip games and sports anti-doping tests following the screenings for illicit substances including cocaine.

Australian rules is a contact game played by teams of 18 on an oval-shaped field and is similar in some respects to Ireland’s Gaelic football, with players permitted to handle and kick the ball. There is no serious international competition.

The Australian Football League pulls the biggest crowds and TV audiences for sports in Australia.

Wilkie said the “off the books” testing results were never shared with the World Anti-Doping Agency or Sports Integrity Australia.

AFL chief executive Andrew Dillion on Wednesday said the welfare of players was the main consideration for the league.

“The private medical information of the players is private medical information and that’s what we prioritize above anything else,” he said. “What we’re talking about is a doctor and the player who’s their patient and private medical information of that player ... and it’s that player’s decision to disclose or not.”

Dillon said the tests Wilkie was referring to related to a “small handful of the 1,300 athletes” involved in the top-flight men’s and women’s leagues.

He said detailing the number of players who tested positive for illicit drugs, including cocaine, wasn’t in the public interest.

The AFL does have an anti-doping code specific to the Australian sport and a “three-strikes” approach under its illicit drugs policy, which Dillon said is under review.

“We are unapologetic about club and AFL doctors taking the correct steps to ensure that any player who they believe has an illicit substance in their system does not take part in any AFL match and that doctor-patient confidentially is upheld and respected,” he said. “The medical interests and welfare of players is a priority for the AFL given everything we know about the risks facing young people generally and those who play our game in particular.”

Dillon said urine tests were part of the illicit drugs policy and if results indicated those substances in a player’s sample, a club doctor would take steps to prevent that player either playing a match or training.

The AFL’s illicit drugs policy was implemented in 2005 and Dillon said it was being reviewed, with input from player unions.

What is the UFL? Teams, rosters, schedule, rules and more for the new 2024 football league

T he USFL and XFL are no longer competing for spring supremacy. Instead, they are teaming up to form one spring football league that hopes to last longer than its counterparts.

The two leagues merged during the 2023-24 offseason with one goal in mind: to pool their resources and create a spring league that can become long-lasting.

Will the parties that comprise the UFL be able to make that happen? Only time will tell, but the 2024 season should tell fans a lot about the league's future.

The good news for the league is that it has several solid springtime coaches and plenty of proven talent returning to the fold. That continuity should allow the on-field play to be high quality, even as players change teams and systems as a part of the crunch from 16 teams across two leagues to eight within one.

Here's everything to know about the UFL as it prepares to play its first season.

What is the UFL?

The UFL is the newest spring football start-up and will play its first full season in 2024. The league formed when the USFL and XFL merged after competing head-to-head for one spring season in 2023.

The UFL will follow the same format as the USFL and XFL before it did. It's an eight-team league with a 10-week regular season and two-week postseason. The league is starting its season on March 30, about six weeks later than the XFL began in 2023 and two weeks earlier than the USFL.

This iteration of the UFL has no relation to the league that ran from 1961-64 or the spring league that existed from 2009-12. It's simply the name that the USFL and XFL chose after their merger.

The UFL is co-owned by Fox Corporation, RedBird Capital Partners, Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson, and Dany Garcia. Fox previously footed the bill for the USFL while RedBird, Johnson, and Garcia were in charge of the XFL, so it's expected that the two ownership groups will split the league's costs down the middle after merging.

Garcia will serve as the chairwoman of the UFL, while Johnson continues to be a figurehead for the league. Former Bills president Russ Brandon will serve as the league's president after holding that title with the XFL in 2023. Daryl Johnston will be the league's executive vice president of football operations after serving in that same role in the USFL for its two seasons in 2022 and '23.

What was the original UFL?

The UFL first existed from 1961-64, when it became the first football league to operate in both the United States and Canada. It was based in the midwestern United States and had teams in it such as the Canton Bulldogs and Akron Pros, but it folded in 1964.

The better-known UFL played from 2009-12 and was devised to be a potential competitor to the NFL. It placed teams in non-NFL markets like Hartford, Conn., Sacramento, Calif. and Las Vegas, Nev. and hoped to capitalize on a potential NFL work stoppage during the 2011 NFL lockout.

The NFL players and owners resolved their CBA dispute in July of 2011, which took away any potential advantage the UFL could find as a competitor. As a result, the league played only parts of four seasons but saw the final one in 2012 cut short as the UFL folded.

While the original UFL didn't survive, it helped kickstart the careers of Jay Gruden and Sean McVay, who worked together on the Florida Tuskers staff. Today's UFL will hope to similarly develop coaching talent while also working to get some of its best players and chance to find success again in the NFL.

UFL team names for 2024

Below are the eight teams playing in the UFL during the 2024 season:

Arlington Renegades

Birmingham stallions, dc defenders, houston roughnecks, memphis showboats, michigan panthers, san antonio brahmas, st. louis battlehawks.

The teams will be split into two divisions: the USFL division and the XFL division, as seen below.

The Houston Roughnecks are the lone team that crossed league lines for the divisional realignment. However, their team is comprised of the staff and players from the USFL's Houston Gamblers. The UFL simply decided to keep the Roughnecks branding over that of the Gamblers.

UFL coaches, players, rosters for 2024

The UFL navigated a merger during the 2023-24 offseason, but its rosters for the 2024 season have been set. There are plenty of returning talents — most notably, quarterback Case Cookus of the Showboats — while the Stallions and Renegades are returning their championship cores this season.

Below is a breakdown of some of the notable players on each team and their head coaches for the 2024 UFL season.

  • Head coach : Bob Stoops

Bob Stoops is entering his third season coaching spring football. He led the Renegades in 2020 before the XFL was shuttered by the COVID pandemic and coached Arlington to a surprising XFL championship in 2023.

Stoops' record with the Renegades is just 6-9, but he brought the 4-6 team into the postseason last year and saw them get hot at the right time. In-season pickup Luis Perez proved to be a solid starter and helped Arlington upset the Roughnecks and Defenders to win the title.

Stoops, 63, enjoyed a storied 17-year career at Oklahoma, posting a 191-48 record and leading the Sooners to 10 Big 12 titles. Oklahoma won a national championship under Stoops' watch in 2000, and he is one of the UFL's most successful coaches.

The Renegades will rely on Perez to carry them at quarterback once again. They also have 2015 top-10 NFL Draft pick Vic Beasley and former All-Pro second-teamer Marquette King on the roster at edge rusher and punter, respectively. Arlington should have a good defense and an ability to win field possession battles because of that.

  • Head coach : Skip Holtz

Holtz is gunning to win three consecutive spring league titles, which could establish him as the best spring football coach in the sport's history. Birmingham posted a 17-3 regular-season record under him and hasn't lost a postseason game in four tries during his tenure.

Before joining the Stallions, Holtz coached collegiately at UConn, East Carolina, South Florida, and Louisiana Tech. He had a total record of 152-121 during those three stops and won six consecutive bowl games while with the Bulldogs.

Holtz has worked closely with quarterback J'Mar Smith, who played with him at Louisiana Tech and starred for the Stallions in 2022 before being outplayed by Alex McGough in '23. McGough is now with the Packers, so Smith will be asked to step into the starting role again ahead of former Ole Miss star Matt Corral and dual-threat Kansas State quarterback Adrian Martinez.

The Stallions also return leading rusher CJ Marable, who spent time with the Patriots last offseason. Linebacker Scooby Wright, tight end Jace Sternberger, and former Clemson receivers Deon Cain and Amari Rodgers are among the other notable names on Birmingham's loaded roster.

  • Head coach : Reggie Barlow

Barlow's first season in the XFL was a great one. He posted a 9-1 record with the Defenders and took home the league's Coach of the Year honors thanks to his team's stellar performance. DC came up short in its championship efforts, losing to the Renegades 35-26 in the league title game, but Barlow's squad still showed well most of the season.

Barlow, 52, spent 15 seasons at Alabama State and Virginia State as a head coach before joining the XFL. He went 83-58 during his time at the programs and led Virginia State to a Div. II playoff appearance in 2017.

Barlow is returning offensive coordinator Fred Kaiss and defensive coordinator Gregg Williams to his staff in 2024. That should make D.C. a threat to bounce back even as it faces challenges in a new league.

Star quarterback Jordan Ta'amu is also returning to the Defenders for the 2024 UFL season along with the XFL's top rusher Abram Smith. Ta'amu will make use of former Philadelphia Stars star Chris Rowland and former NFL wideout Keke Coutee, as well.

D.C.'s top-tier defense will build itself in the physical mold of safety D.J. Swearinger, while former Raiders first-round pick Gareon Conley will attempt to emerge as the team's top cornerback.

  • Head coach : Curtis Johnson

Johnson coached the Houston Gamblers last season, but the Gamblers and Roughnecks merged into one during the offseason. The result? The Roughnecks branding is here to stay, but it's the Gamblers coaching staff and players that largely remained in Houston.

Johnson spent the 2023 season in charge of the Gamblers and led them to a solid 5-5 record. Houston got hot at the end of the season, and Johnson seems poised to make them a sleeper in 2024.

The 62-year-old Johnson has plenty of NFL experience under Sean Payton with the Saints. He was a receivers coach from 2006-11 before taking the Tulane coaching job. He went 15-34 at that stop before returning to the NFL with the Bears and eventually rejoining the Saints as a senior offensive assistant.

Johnson — who won Super Bowl 44 with the Saints — has questions to answer at quarterback, Reid Sinnett, Jarrett Guarantano, and Nolan Henderson figure to fight for the starting job. Running back Mark Thompson figures to once again be the focal point of Houston's offense given that arrangement.

Houston's defense is its calling card, and 2022 USFL sack leader Chris Odom should be a viable pass-rushing threat. Reuben Foster, a 2018 first-round pick of the 49ers, could emerge as a star linebacker for the team, as well.

  • Head coach : John DeFilippo

DeFilippo coached the USFL's New Orleans Breakers last season, but he was reassigned to the Showboats with New Orleans not fielding a team in 2024. The 45-year-old led the Breakers to a 7-3 record last season, his first at the USFL level.

DeFilippo has plenty of NFL experience, as he had one-year stints as the offensive coordinator of the Browns, Vikings, and Jaguars mixed in with various quarterback coaching gigs. He helped McLeod Bethel-Thompson enjoy a solid 2023, the veteran passer's first in the USFL, so the expectation is DeFilippo's offense will carry over to Memphis.

Case Cookus is set to take over for Bethel-Thompson at quarterback. He threw for 2,294 yards, 15 touchdowns, and nine interceptions with the Stars last season, so he could outperform these numbers with Memphis.

Cookus will be flanked by Darius Victor, the USFL's third-leading rusher with the New Jersey Generals last year, and former Breakers receiving weapons Jonathan Adams and Sage Surratt. Star linebacker Vontae Diggs is also coming over from New Orleans and gives DeFilippo's stop unit plenty of talent.

  • Head coach : Mike Nolan

Nolan was a respected defensive coordinator in the NFL before he made the jump to the USFL in 2023. The 65-year-old led the Michigan Panthers to a 4-6 record but nearly helped them defeat the Pittsburgh Maulers in the North Division championship game with EJ Perry at quarterback.

Nolan's stint with the Panthers was more successful than the 18-37 mark he earned during his four-year run as the 49ers' head coach from 2005-08. He has experience with 11 different NFL teams in various defensive roles, so it's no surprise he brought a strong defensive presence to Michigan while searching for a solid quarterback.

Perry is returning to the Panthers in 2024 and figures to be the team's full-time starter after only taking on the role down the stretch of last season. Wes Hills and Matthew Colburn seem likely to pair with him in the backfield given their strong USFL experience and the departure of Reggie Corbin.

Defensively, Frank Ginda and Jerod Fernandez may comprise the league's best linebacking corps. Defensive end Breeland Speaks will look to lead the league in sacks again after recording nine in 2024.

  • Head coach : Wade Phillips

Phillips coached the Roughnecks last season, so seeing him in Brahmas colors for the 2024 season will be a bit jarring. That said, Phillips led the Roughnecks to a 7-3 record before their playoff defeat against Arlington.

Phillips also spent 43 years in the NFL, mostly working as one of the best defensive coordinators in the game. He was also a head coach full-time on three occasions and posted a 89-67 regular-season record during his career. His 1-6 postseason record left a bit to be desired, which is why his defensive prowess often was best suited for the coordinator job.

That said, Phillips is a proven success story at the UFL level and should help make the Brahmas competitive while trying to stoke a rivalry with his former team, the Roughnecks. Long-time NFL pass rusher Tarrell Basham should help his defense perform well, while former Steelers running back Anthony McFarland adds some speed to the offense alongside former Broncos second-round pick, wideout Cody Latimer.

The big question for the Brahmas will be at quarterback. Kurt Benkert, Chase Garbers, Quinten Dormady, and Tom Flacco (yes, he's Joe Flacco's brother) are competing for the starting job. It appears that Garbers will get the first crack at the job, but Dormady has the most proven spring league success thanks to his stint with the Orlando Guardians last season.

  • Head coach : Anthony Becht

The Battlehawks took a chance by naming Becht their head coach with little coaching experience ahead of the 2023 season. It paid off, as he led the Battlehawks to a 7-3 finish in the XFL's North Division, though they missed out on the postseason because of a tiebreaker with the Sea Dragons.

Becht's team played an all-around smooth game and had one of the league's better offenses thanks to quarterback A.J. McCarron. While the veteran passer spent time with the Bengals last season, he specifically requested his release so he could play for St. Louis again. That was granted, and his return will land the Battlehawks among the favorites to win the UFL title.

McCarron will be able to throw to his tall receiving weapons Hakeem Butler and Marcell Ateman once again, while 5-8 sparkplug Jahcour Pearson joins his receiving corps after enjoying success in Seattle. Add Wayne Gallman in at running back, and St. Louis may boast the top offense in the league.

UFL 2024 schedule

The UFL will have a 10-game regular-season schedule in 2024. The season will run from March 30 through June 2 and consist of 40 regular-season games. There will then be three playoff games — two divisional contests and one championship game — that will take place in June.

The league has announced the dates, times, and TV channels for all of its contests in 2024. The games will air on Fox and the ESPN family of networks, which includes ESPN, ESPN2, and ABC. All of the contests will be available to stream on  Fubo .

Below is a look at the full 10-week schedule and matchups for the 2024 UFL season:

* - game varies by region

UFL playoffs schedule 2024

The UFL playoffs will begin immediately after the 2024 season concludes. The first postseason round will be played on Saturday, June 8 and Sunday, June 9. The UFL championship game will be played in St. Louis on June 16.

The semifinals will feature the top two teams in each division — the USFL and XFL divisions — squaring off against one another. The winners will go to the championship game.

Rule differences between UFL and NFL

Both the USFL and XFL experimented with rule changes and differences between the spring and NFL games in recent seasons. The results have been successful, as can be seen by the NFL considering adopting the XFL's kickoff method for its 2024 season.

But what does the UFL have planned this season? Here's what to know about the rule differences fans will notice when watching spring football in 2024.

Tiered extra-point attempts

The UFL will not have a traditional PAT attempt. The league will allow its teams to attempt a one-, two- or three-point conversion after a touchdown, depending on where they are on the field.

There will be no option to kick an extra point. That existed in the USFL, but the XFL's method was fully adopted for the new spring league venture.

The NFL is considering adopting the XFL's kickoff rule , but ironically, the UFL is using a different method. They are adopting the kicking setup of the USFL, which places the kickoff at the kicking team's own 20-yard line. That creates more return opportunities for teams after kickoffs.

Kickoffs out of bounds will give possession to the receiving team 30 yards from the spot of the kickoff (the 50-yard line) or where the ball went out of bounds, whichever is better for the receiving team.

A kickoff that isn't touched by the receiving team can only be recovered by the kicking team if it's more than 20 yards from the spot of the kick.

Onside kick alternative

UFL teams will be allowed to attempt an onside kick at any point in the game, but if a team is tied or behind in the fourth quarter, they can opt to attempt a fourth-and-12 from their own 28-yard line in lieu of an onside kick.

A.J. McCarron and the Battlehawks showcased exactly how exciting the rule change can be last season when he used a fourth-and-12 conversion to lead St. Louis to a come-from-behind win late in the fourth quarter.

Overtime shootout

Rather than play an overtime period, the UFL will utilize a best-of-three "shootout-style" extra period that both the XFL and USFL have used.

Under this format, teams alternate attempts to score touchdowns from the opponent's 5-yard line. If the overtime goes beyond three attempts, it becomes sudden death.

The USFL saw its North Division title game between the Panthers and Maulers go into an overtime shootout. Pittsburgh came out on top to earn the right to go to Canton for the championship game.

Two forward passes

UFL teams can throw two forward passes on the same play provided the first pass is completed behind the line of scrimmage. The second pass must also be released from behind the line of scrimmage for the play to be considered legal.

Defensive Pass Interference

The UFL is adopting college football's approach to defensive pass interference. The penalty for defensive pass interference can only be a maximum of 15 yards even if it occurs more than 15 yards down the field. If the penalty occurs within 15 yards of the line of scrimmage, it is a spot foul.

Replay reviews and coach's challenges

The UFL will use a centralized replay system. All plays will be subject to review by the replay official and coaches will be able to challenge one call during the game.

Coaches are allowed to challenge calls "involving a foul or potential foul" provided that they have a timeout available.

The replay center is allowed to correct errors on "any call or non-call related to player safety" throughout the game, per the UFL's website . It can also look at "any officiating ruling in the last five minutes of the fourth quarter or overtime that is obviously incorrect and will have a significant impact on the outcome of the game."

Australian rules football organizers unapologetic for stance on illicit drug testing

AFL CEO Andrew Dillon, during a press conference in Sydney

The governing body for Australian rules football was aware of players undertaking screening for illicit substances to avoid detection in game-related doping tests and its chief executive on Wednesday said he was “unapologetic” for it.

Federal lawmaker Andrew Wilkie told Parliament of allegations made by the Melbourne Demons’ former club doctor and president that players had faked injuries to skip games and sports anti-doping tests following the screenings for illicit substances including cocaine.

Australian rules is a contact game played by teams of 18 on an oval-shaped field and is similar in some respects to Ireland’s Gaelic football , with players permitted to handle and kick the ball. There is no serious international competition.

The Australian Football League pulls the biggest crowds and TV audiences for sports in Australia .

He said detailing the number of players who tested positive for illicit drugs, including cocaine , wasn’t in the public interest.

Sports Leagues Bet on Gambling. Now They’re Facing Its Risks.

A string of gambling situations involving athletes leaves leagues in a tough spot.

essay on football and its rules

By Lauren Hirsch and Ephrat Livni

Major League Baseball held its season openers this week under the shadow of a gambling scandal . Reports surfaced that the National Basketball Association is investigating a player over irregular bets . And college basketball fans await results from a review into unusual betting on a men’s basketball game .

The incidents have highlighted a trade-off that professional sports leagues made when they embraced gambling.

Leagues have signed lucrative marketing deals with betting apps like FanDuel and DraftKings and use gambling to amp up fan engagement. But this new source of revenue has also opened the doors to a fundamental danger: that an explosion of sports betting could threaten the assumption of fairness at the core of athletic competitions.

“The risk is that the game becomes like professional wrestling — which is rigged. And nobody bets on professional wrestling,” said Fay Vincent, the M.L.B. commissioner from 1989 to 1992. “And if baseball becomes professional entertainment the way wrestling is, it’s dead.”

Leagues are unlikely to abandon gambling completely. But is there a way for them to protect their image as they profit from betting?

Clubs can no longer blame gambling itself for scandals. When Pete Rose was barred from baseball in 1989 for betting on games, in one of the most famous gambling scandals in sports history, Commissioner A. Bartlett Giamatti, Vincent’s predecessor, denounced gambling as corrosive. But after a 2018 Supreme Court decision paved the way for states to legalize betting, leagues are now working directly with sports books. The N.B.A. signed an estimated $25 million contract with MGM Resorts in 2018 , and M.L.B. has an exclusive multiyear deal with FanDuel.

“There is no putting the toothpaste back in the tube,” said Patrick Rishe, a professor in the business of sports at Washington University in St. Louis. “The money flows too thick.”

Leagues may support limits on prop bets, which allow gamblers to bet beyond the results of games on components like the first player to score. Since the outcome of these bets can often be decided by only one player, they leave individual athletes vulnerable to more pressure from bookies and others. The president of the N.C.A.A., Charlie Baker, encouraged states this week to ban prop bets , sending shares of DraftKings and FanDuel’s parent company, Flutter, tumbling. (Some analysts said a ban would only minimally affect the sports books’ bottom lines. )

Better self-monitoring could help. The largest U.S. sports books announced this week that they were forming the Responsible Online Gaming Association , an organization that will allow them to share information about customers who have been excluded because of problematic gambling.

“This is real money, real participation,” said Chris Grove, an analyst at Eilers & Krejcik Gaming. “But, with that said, it shouldn’t also just be a free pat on the back. There are a lot of questions, especially around what kind of information are you going to be sharing about individual players and then what kinds of actions are you going to be taking based on that information sharing.”

Leagues could also extend bans against in-sport betting to individuals with ties to players , like personal assistants. Anyone who works at the teams “should probably be subjected to the same rules as they’re subjecting the athletes to,” said Jeffrey Kessler, a sports law lawyer at Winston & Strawn.

More taxes may be on the table. “State governments are also major beneficiaries of regulated gambling,” Grove said. “They have an obligation to step up and to help to mitigate whatever problems are emerging.”

States could raise taxes on sports betting, which range from 6.75 percent in Iowa to 51 percent in New York, Rhode Island and New Hampshire , and use the proceeds to fund oversight initiatives such as real-time data monitoring or state-supported teletherapy for gambling addicts.

A flat tax increase might be welcomed by FanDuel and DraftKings, the largest betting sites, which are better equipped than smaller rivals to afford the impact — “though they would never say that out loud,” Grove said.

But many are doubtful this will happen any time soon, given the pushback that higher taxes would most likely elicit from others. Professional sports teams and casinos both “have a very strong track record in terms of lobbying state legislatures,” said Marc Edelman, a professor of law at Baruch College who studies gambling history.

Will the latest incidents damage leagues? Given the lengthy nature of TV contracts and relative steadfastness of fans, any immediate impact may be subtle. Attendance at Cincinnati Reds games dipped only slightly after Rose, who managed the team, was ousted for betting, said Keith O’Brien, author of “Charlie Hustle: The Rise and Fall of Pete Rose.” A year later, it jumped about 25 percent.

“Does that mean that fans wanted to come because they were washing away the scandal? I don’t know,” O’Brien said. “I can tell you, having lived in Cincinnati in 1989, that it ruined baseball. It ruined it. And it was a lost season.” — Lauren Hirsch

Blockbuster spending

Wednesday is the deadline for Disney shareholders to vote in what is expected to be the most expensive proxy fight in history. The company’s board faces attacks from two sets of activist investors — Trian Partners and Blackwells Capital — and all sides are putting their money to work to try to win over retail investors. Trian has spent about $25 million, Blackwells Capital about $6 million and Disney upward of $40 million.

Because a large portion of Disney’s shareholders are retail investors , the battle has morphed into what is effectively a modern-day marketing campaign. And if you’ve been searching for information about the fight, you’ve probably been barraged by online ads. Here’s how the price to bid on Google Ads keywords tied to the fight has jumped over the past year.

How any business can use A.I.

Ethan Mollick, a professor at the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania, has built a big following for his research into how to apply artificial intelligence at work and his popular newsletter, One Useful Thing.

He spoke to DealBook about his new book, “Co-Intelligence: Living and Working With AI,” in which he spells out how to get the most out of the transformative new tools. The conversation has been edited and condensed.

What mistakes do companies make with A.I.?

They tend to view this as something that has to be highly centralized. So it ends up being some sort of high-end working group, usually with the I.T. department and the legal department, to define rules and uses. What they often do is lock down use.

Companies also believe that somebody has answers about how to use A.I. They’re hiring consulting companies, and the consulting companies don’t know anything. Even the A.I. companies don’t know how this can be used best.

Have you seen companies use generative A.I. to make big improvements in how they work?

What’s really happening is large numbers of their employees are secretly doing their work with A.I. and just not telling anyone. So a lot of companies are actually being automated and getting huge efficiency gains.

You write that we should strive to use A.I. like a “cyborg” instead of a “centaur.” What do you mean?

Centaur work is divided. There’s some work you give the A.I and some work you keep for yourself. So let’s say I’m not a good writer but I’m good at analysis. I’d say to the A.I.: “You do the writing. I do the analysis.”

Cyborg work is more blended. When I wrote this book, if I got stuck on a sentence I’d ask the A.I., “Give me 10 ways of resolving this issue.” I had it read through part of my books and give me feedback on it, or suggest analogies that might be useful. That is more effective.

If an executive wants to incorporate A.I. into my business, what should be that person’s first step?

You just have to use it. The first use case I see from many, many people is using a chatbot to write children’s stories or wedding toasts. I think the thing to actually start with is everything you legally, ethically can at work. Ask it questions about what you’re working on. Have it brainstorm ideas with you. Have it give you feedback on a meeting that you recorded on Zoom with permission. And that’s how you learn how to work with it.

On our radar: The ancient maritime principle of ‘general average’

Insured losses from the collapse of the Francis Scott Key Bridge, which a cargo ship struck on Tuesday, could reach $4 billion , and sorting out who will foot that bill may take a decade of litigation. Part of that fight may involve a little-known ancient principle of maritime law called “general average.”

The principle, attributed to the mariners of Rhodes in a text from 533, dictates that when there is disaster, cargo shippers and vessel owners jointly share the costs. “General average is a shared sacrifice,” said William Fennell, chair of the Marine Insurance and General Average Committee for the Maritime Law Association of the United States. The principle dictates that “everyone’s in it together.”

Classic cases involved jettisoning cargo — if the crew had to lighten a ship’s load to avoid sinking and tossed some but not all cargo, under general average everyone chipped in for the loss. In modern times, the notion applies more broadly, and it could arise in the case of this week’s tragedy, Fennell said.

If the ship’s owners invoke the principle and are not ultimately found to be at fault for the accident (in which case it would not apply), companies that had cargo on the ship could end up paying for some of those losses.
