How to Put LinkedIn on a Resume (with Examples)

Here's how to best represent LinkedIn on your resume so you receive the right type of attention

It's common knowledge that LinkedIn is the top professional social media site used. Unlike other older social media sites that have declined in popularity over the years, LinkedIn has maintained its popularity and has been actively used since its launch in 2003. With more than 1 billion users worldwide and 67 million companies on the site, it's a go-to resource to network, recruit, find and apply for jobs, promote your expertise, and more.

So, if you're not on LinkedIn, create an account as soon as possible. For those of you who are on LinkedIn, you might be wondering if you should include LinkedIn on your resume. Great question!

In this post, we'll cover:

Why you should include LinkedIn on a resume

How to update your LinkedIn profile so it's safe to share your URL

How to create a custom LinkedIn URL

Ways to personalize your LinkedIn URL

Where and how to put LinkedIn on your resume

When not to include LinkedIn on your resume

How to include LinkedIn Learning on your resume

Should you put LinkedIn on a resume?

It's true that your resume is the first impression employers have of you when you apply for a job. With that said, count on LinkedIn being impression number two, given that more than 78% of recruiters use LinkedIn to find and research candidates. Some research even indicates 40% of employers won't consider you if you don't have a LinkedIn profile. In other words, as soon as your resume grabs the attention of a recruiter or hiring manager, it's likely that they're going to quickly do an online search to learn more about you, starting with LinkedIn.

So, if you've been wondering if recruiters and hiring managers really do check LinkedIn, now you know that they do. As a result, you should definitely include your LinkedIn URL on your resume. But, before you take that step, you must ensure that your profile is current and professional.

How to update your LinkedIn profile before sharing your URL

Even if you choose not to include your LinkedIn URL on your resume, based on the stats above, it's still probable that hiring teams will look for it anyway. So, first things first, you need to ensure your LinkedIn profile has all the necessary elements and is professionally written. The last thing you want is for a hiring manager to find your profile halfway complete - that scenario is likely to put your resume in the thanks-but-no-thanks pile.

While it's true that your LinkedIn profile and resume need to align with each other, the great thing about your LinkedIn profile is that it gives you the chance to share more about yourself than your resume can highlight - another reason to be sure to include LinkedIn on your resume. Your LinkedIn profile provides you with a unique opportunity to showcase your personality and all of your professional history - it's a way to highlight your personal and professional brand.

To ensure your profile is up to par and does what it's meant to do (land an interview and help you to get hired), you want to customize it as follows:

Include a professional photo and cover image

Craft a catchy headline

Add a standout summary in the “About” section

Add your work history in detail

Include all of your skills

Seek endorsements

Include your education , training, licenses, and certifications

Request recommendations

Add work samples, if possible

Complete all relevant sections

For more detailed information on how to best complete your LinkedIn profile, refer to “ 12 Ways to Make Your LinkedIn Profile Stand Out .”

If you don't currently have a LinkedIn profile, use caution when rushing to create one. Yes, you want to have a profile up and running as soon as possible - especially if you're in the market for a new job - but don't create it in haste. Instead, when you're ready, give it some thoughtful consideration and take the time required to ensure it's a profile you're proud to share with employers.

Another essential step to take before adding your LinkedIn URL to your resume is personalizing it. Yes, you could use the LinkedIn-generated URL that includes your full name followed by a string of seemingly random numbers and text at the end, but doing so looks unprofessional. In the examples below, if you compare how a LinkedIn-generated URL looks with how a customized URL looks, which is better?

LinkedIn-generated URL : linkedin.com/in/carry-groove-521a7699744/

Customized URL: linkedin.com/in/carrygroove

Not only does the customized URL look more professional, it's also easier to recall. Plus, not customizing your URL can make you come across as being lazy or not caring enough about your job application.

Now that you're clear it's essential to customize your LinkedIn URL, here are the steps to do so:

Log into your LinkedIn profile

On the upper middle to right side of the LinkedIn navigation, click on the “Me” icon

From the menu that appears, click on “View Profile”

Select “Edit public profile & URL” from the top right corner, which will take you to your public profile settings

Click on the pencil icon below and to the right of “Edit your custom URL”

Customize the last part of the URL where you can enter information and click “Save”

Ways to customize and personalize your LinkedIn URL

LinkedIn allows you to customize your URL with 3 to 100 numbers or letters. When choosing what to use for the customized aspect, first remove any random string of text or numbers following your name. If your name alone isn't available, the next best option is to use a variation of your name that is still recognizable and professional. You can also include your job title or profession for URL customization.

Here are some examples of how to personalize your URL:

Add an available and easy to remember number at the end: linkedin.com/in/jamesjones25

Use your title or area of expertise: linkedin.com/in/jamesjoneshrgeneralist

Include your credentials: linkedin.com/in/jamesjonesCPA

Add a phrase that relates to your personal brand: linkedin.com/in/jamesjonesmortgageloanexpert

Add your middle initial: linkedin.com/in/jameszjones

Where to include a LinkedIn URL on your resume

You're likely not surprised to learn that your LinkedIn URL should go at the top of your resume with your contact information . It's typically the last piece of contact information you'll include, following your phone number and email address.

When sending your resume by email, it's also wise to include your hyperlinked LinkedIn URL in your email signature. This offers easy access to your LinkedIn profile before the recruiter or hiring manager even looks at your resume. It's a good idea to include your LinkedIn URL in the contact information section of your cover letter , too.

How to put your LinkedIn URL on your resume

When listing your LinkedIn URL:

You don't need to include the "https://www." at the beginning. Only listing the rest of the URL is sufficient - for example, linkedin.com/in/karenjohnson22

You don't need to include a LinkedIn label for the URL - the employer will know what the URL is referencing since all LinkedIn URLs begin with "linkedin.com/in/"

Hyperlink the URL in electronic versions of your resume

On the rare occasion that you might mail a hard copy of your resume, be sure the URL is easily legible and remove the hyperlink

How to put LinkedIn on a resume: example

When you've added your LinkedIn URL to your resume, it could look like this:

[email protected] | 555.555.5555 | linkedin.com/in/marysmith11

When not to include a LinkedIn URL on your resume

It's clear that putting LinkedIn on your resume adds value in most instances. However, there are a few scenarios where you shouldn't include LinkedIn on your resume.

Don't include your LinkedIn URL if:

You haven't customized your LinkedIn URL. As mentioned earlier, not customizing your URL might make you appear lazy to recruiters and hiring managers. Since the LinkedIn-generated URL also tends to be long and odd-looking, it could be distracting to human readers vs. adding value the way you want it to.

Your profile is out-of-date and incomplete. Again, it's imperative that your LinkedIn profile is current and complete if you're in the job market and share your URL on your resume.

You don't feel good about your profile. Even if your LinkedIn profile is current, if you don't feel good about it or don't feel it represents you in the best light possible, don't include the URL on your resume. Instead, wait until you've made the updates and changes that make you want to share it. With that said, since employers tend to look you up even if you don't include your URL, try to make those changes with thoughtful consideration sooner rather than later - especially if you're currently applying for jobs. You also have the option of switching your profile to private until you're ready to make it public.  You can always seek professional support to help you update your profile if you're struggling to do so yourself.

Your LinkedIn profile merely mirrors your resume. A benefit of including your LinkedIn URL on your resume is that it gives hiring teams insight into additional skills and experiences you have, as well as who you are as a person. If your LinkedIn profile and resume are virtually the same, then hiring teams might wonder why you included the URL at all.

How to add LinkedIn Learning to your resume

If you have a LinkedIn learning certificate, it can be a valuable addition to enhance your job marketing materials. Here are some ways to include LinkedIn Learning on your resume:

Include it in your Certifications section. The most obvious place to include a LinkedIn Learning certificate is in your list of certifications, if you include such a section on your resume.

Share it in your Education section . Suppose LinkedIn Learning is your only certification or additional training beyond your education. In that case, you can choose to list it with your education. For this scenario, some good naming conventions for the section are “Education & Certifications” or “Education & Credentials.”

Reference it in your resume summary. You might mention your LinkedIn Learning certificate in your resume summary , if it helps to fill in any skills gaps you have or if you lack relevant work experience for the position.

Add it to your skills or competencies list. If you don't need to emphasize your LinkedIn Learning training in your summary, or are forgoing a Certifications section on your resume, then you can opt to list it in your skills or competencies list.

LinkedIn on your resume is expected

In today's world, employers expect to see your LinkedIn URL on your resume. Be sure to include your personalized URL with your contact information and, simultaneously, ensure your LinkedIn profile is professionally written and up to date. Hiring managers will thank you!

And if you have any LinkedIn Learning training that's relevant to the job, be sure to include it where appropriate. Doing so can further enhance your resume and prove you're the perfect candidate for the job. Good luck!

The little-known hack to creating your resume in 15 seconds or less—using LinkedIn

thumbnail

Creating your resume can be stressful . But what if you could actually put one together in 15 seconds or less ?

While there are plenty of resources to help job seekers format their resume, one of the simplest ways to do it is through LinkedIn :

  • Log into your LinkedIn account.
  • Click the "Me" dropdown on the top right corner and click "View Profile."
  • Click the "More" button in the introduction card (in the section below your profile picture).
  • Click "Save to PDF."

And just like that, you have a resume!

Keep in mind that only characters in English will be displayed properly. And you'll need a premium subscription in order to choose which sections to include in the PDF.

LinkedIn resumes: Not a one-size-fits-all

While this resume hack can potentially save a lot of time, the end results won't work for everyone. Here are four things to keep in mind:

1. Your LinkedIn profile needs to be resume-worthy.

Some people put every little detail on their resumes, but skimp on the details in their LinkedIn profile. But LinkedIn isn't a secondary option — it deserves the same amount of attention.

Remember, hiring managers and recruiters don't just find candidates via website applications, they also use LinkedIn to search for people. So it's important to treat your LinkedIn profile almost the same as your resume.

2. Take advantage of the LinkedIn headline.

Your LinkedIn headline is valuable space, but many people don't use it correctly.

Instead of creating a flashy headline like "Experienced Online Marketing Professional," use this space to highlight at least five key skills you want to leverage in your next career opportunity.

3. Display your most impressive accomplishments.

The experience section of your LinkedIn profile should mirror your resume, with a strong focus on your quantifiable accomplishments (i.e., numbers and statistics that prove results).

Make sure they all go hand in hand with your skill sets.

4. Don't forget to include other relevant information.

The rest of your profile is pretty standard and should include things like your education, degrees and certifications, professional associations and volunteering efforts.

When to create your own resume, and when to use LinkedIn

If your LinkedIn profile aligns with your resume and is set up for the specific position you want to apply to, then downloading your through LinkedIn is an option.

If you're applying for several different jobs, however, and each position has its own unique set of requirements, you might be better off creating your resume (i.e., via Microsoft Word or Google Docs and then converting to PDF). This way, you can tailor your resume to appeal to each job you submit an application to.

If you already have a LinkedIn account, you may wonder what the point of adding a resume is---can't employers learn the same thing from looking at your profile? Well, unless you've made your entire profile public , they can't see it until you've added them as a connection. Making connections is time-consuming and inconvenient in the fast-paced world of hiring, and a public profile puts your privacy at risk.

If you upload a resume to your profile, visitors to your profile can get your skills and history in brief and share the resume with recruiters and employers. Saving your resume in your account settings will let you complete applications faster, and posting your resume to your feed puts it in front of everyone in your network. You only stand to gain from uploading your resume to LinkedIn, and it only takes a few clicks, so let's get started.

In case you don't already have a resume , you can generate one using the existing career details in your LinkedIn profile.

One way to showcase your resume on LinkedIn is to add it to your profile. This allows your profile viewers to view as well as download your resume. Note that you can't use this uploaded resume to apply for jobs on the platform; for that, you'll have to follow the second section below.

To begin adding your resume to your profile, launch your preferred web browser on your desktop and open LinkedIn . Sign in to your account on the site.

Then, in the site's top-right corner, click Me > View Profile.

On your profile page , beneath your name, click "Add Profile Section."

On the "Add to Profile" window, select Recommended > Add Featured.

Next to the "Featured" title, select the "+" (plus) sign and choose "Add Media."

You'll see your computer's "Open" window. Here, access the folder containing your resume and double-click your resume to upload it.

On the "Add Media" window, click the "Title" field and type a title for your resume. Optionally, fill in the "Description" field. Then, save your changes by clicking "Save" in the window's bottom-right corner.

And your resume has been successfully uploaded to your LinkedIn profile.

To make applying for jobs faster, you can upload and save your resume in your LinkedIn application settings menu. This way, the next time you come across a relevant job position, you can get LinkedIn to automatically attach your resume to your application.

You can only use your uploaded resume to apply to jobs that display LinkedIn's "Easy Apply" button. If a listing only shows "Apply," it'll redirect you to that company's website, and you'll likely have to upload your resume there.

To upload your resume for later applications, head to the LinkedIn site and sign in to your account. Then, from the menu bar at the top, select "Jobs."

In the left sidebar, click "Application Settings."

A "Job Application Settings" page will open. Here, in the "Manage Your Resumes" section, click "Upload Resume."

Your resume must be in DOC, DOCX, or PDF format. It must also be 5 MB or smaller in size.

You'll see your machine's "Open" window. Here, open the folder containing your resume and double-click your resume file.

And your selected resume is successfully uploaded to LinkedIn.

Next time you see a job listing, simply click the "Easy Apply" button and you can use your saved resume on LinkedIn to apply for the job.

Enjoy the convenience of applying for jobs on LinkedIn!

Like all other social media sites, LinkedIn lets you create and publish public posts. You can add your resume to these posts and let your followers see it in their feed, ideally getting the attention of an employer in your network.

To use this method, access LinkedIn , sign in to your account, and select "Start a Post" at the top.

On the "Create a Post" window, you'll enter the text that will go along with your resume in your post.

First, click the large text field and add a few sentences in your post. This could be related to why you're uploading your resume, where your expertise lies, or similar.

Then, at the bottom, click "Add a Document" (an icon of a paper).

You'll see a "Share a Document" window. Here, to upload your resume from your computer, click "Choose File." To add your resume from Dropbox or Google Drive, select the appropriate option.

We'll upload the resume from our local storage.

In your computer's "Open" window, navigate to your resume folder and double-click the resume file.

Back on the "Share a Document" window, click the "Document Title" field and enter a title for your resume. Then, in the window's bottom-right corner, select "Done."

On the "Create a Post" window, add other details if you want. Then, publish your post along with your resume by clicking the "Post" button.

And that's all. Your post will appear in your audience's feed, allowing them to read your text content as well as view your uploaded resume .

LinkedIn Resume Builder: Does It Pass the Test?

  • Noel Rojo ,
  • Updated March 13, 2024 6 min read

Did you know you could generate a resume from your LinkedIn profile — within LinkedIn’s website?

Yeah, not many people know about this option. It’s such a hidden tool, you’d think LinkedIn’s resume builder was intentionally hidden in shame.

And perhaps that’s the case, as there are a few downsides to using it.

We've tested it and will show you everything you need to know about the LinkedIn resume builder, its strengths and weaknesses, and alternatives.

What is a LinkedIn resume builder?

Step-by-step guide to linkedin resume builder, 5 ways a linkedin profile differs from a resume, better alternatives to linkedin resume builder, what to adjust when creating a resume from your linkedin profile.

The LinkedIn resume builder is a free web-tool that allows you to either import an existing resume or generate a new resume from your LinkedIn profile.

It populates a simple resume template which can be easily edited without impacting your profile. You're also able to download the finished resume as a PDF.

So, how can you create a resume there exactly? Let's have a look!

Before you can begin using the LinkedIn resume builder, you first need to create and log in into your LinkedIn account. Once you have done that, you can continue with the following steps:

  • Click the Me icon at the upper corner of your LinkedIn profile page.
  • Select the More button beneath your name and contact information.
  • Upload or create resume from profile.

That’s it, simple right?

I've tried it myself too and here’s what it spat out:

Resume from LinkedIn resume builder

So, what do we think? Is this a resume that will get you hired?

Not quite. There are two main problems that one can spot immediately:

  • Template. With your resume, you want to stand out. However, the LinkedIn resume template is pretty boring. Plus it contains a lot of white space , forcing you to write sparingly if you don't want to go over one page.
  • Content. LinkedIn profiles and resumes have different functions. You'll not be getting a great resume by merely clicking the " Create from profile " button.

If you want better results, you're going to have to tweak your LinkedIn resume — heavily.

Believe me, you really don't want to just copy and paste your LinkedIn profile into a resume and call it a go. We'll go over why in the chapters below.

LinkedIn resume too bland?

Pick a template with personality and get hired.

Although the LinkedIn’s resume builder is a simple and easy to use tool, it comes with many limitations.

For starters, a good LinkedIn profile rarely translates into a good resume. Perhaps because both are meant to perform different roles.

Here are 5 ways in which a LinkedIn profile differs from a resume:

  • Less formal: Although still professional, your LinkedIn profile should be casual.
  • Includes a profile picture : Including a resume photo in most western countries is a no-no. However, uploading a professional portrait picture on your LinkedIn profile is advised.
  • Longer and more descriptive : For sake of brevity a resume’s length is kept between one and two pages long. Such limitations are not the norm on a LinkedIn profile.
  • Not tailored to individual jobs : Usually it's recommended to tailor a resume to every job application. On the other hand, this is not something you do with your LinkedIn profile. That one you just keep relevant to your field.
  • Written in 1st person instead of 3rd : Unlike a resume, you can use “I” and other personal pronouns such as "me, my, we, our,"  etc.

As you can see, these differences are not so small and will definitely complicate things when converting your LinkedIn profile into a LinkedIn resume.

Luckily, there's a better way.

Some resumes can distinguish an applicant at a glance.

They ooze personality, not just because of how they're written, but because of how they're formatted and how they look.

Unfortunately, this is something that is pretty much impossible to pull off with the LinkedIn resume builder.  You just don't have the options.

In fact, I believe you would be better off creating a resume via Microsoft Word or Google Docs where you at least have some liberty to personalize it.

But we know how hard and time consuming these programs can be.

This is where dedicated resume builders like Kickresume come in. You can still import your LinkedIn profile into them to get a head start, except you now have the option to choose between 30+ resume templates and millions of possible combinations.

Just follow these steps:

  • Login/Signup to Kickresume.com
  • Select Create New and Import from LinkedIn
  • Follow onscreen instructions
  • Pick a template and adjust your content

In the end, you don't need to worry about the formatting or whether it looks good or not.

You can instead dedicate your time to writing a great resume and to properly  use LinkedIn to get a job .

Christy's word of advice

While I’m a huge fan of LinkedIn, unfortunately I can’t say the same about its underwhelming resume builder. If you’re in a hurry and just need a PDF copy of your work history, go ahead and use it. But if you want a document that you can extensively format and quickly edit, or that looks attractive, avoid it. Or use a platform that enables you to pull data from your LinkedIn profile and edit it in a separate resume builder (hint, hint — Kickresume 😉 ).

Christy Morgan, Resident HR Expert

If you decide to create your resume via LinkedIn or with importing your LinkedIn data into a dedicated resume builder, here's how to edit it:

  • Keep it short: Even though your LinkedIn profile allows you to have a whole career history, on your resume, you typically focus on specific aspects and you’re limited by a number of pages. Try to keep it short and relevant, don't go over 2 pages.
  • Change the tone: A resume is a formal document and your tone should reflect that. Eliminate colloquial phrasings and avoid using first person pronouns — heck, you can even opt to remove all personal pronouns.
  • Edit your summary: Majority of LinkedIn summaries are far too long for a resume. Keep your profile 2-5 bullet points long, 3 being the sweet spot.
  • Reduce the skills section: Unlike a LinkedIn profile, a resume doesn't need the 30 skills you added for SEO purposes. Jot down only the most relevant ones. 3-6 should be more then enough.
  • Change your keyword optimization: While a LinkedIn profile uses keywords that speak the language of a career field, a resume should speak with the language of the prospect job or company.

Key takeaway

In conclusion, although the LinkedIn’s resume builder can be great way to jump-start the resume writing process, it's really not an ideal way to create an attention grabbing resume.

It lacks options, it's clunky and the template is bland.

Honestly, if you're to spend time on LinkedIn, you're better off spending it perfecting your profile. You'll get noticed on LinkedIn better that way.

How to download your resume from LinkedIn then? Is it just a single click and that’s it?

Yes! And no. But mostly yes! The thing is, there’s both a technical side and a content side to it.

While the technical side is pretty straightforward and quick, the content side of converting your LinkedIn profile to a resume can be a bit tricky. But that, of course, all depends on your profile.

How to download your resume from LinkedIn then?

  • Go to the top of our LinkedIn profile to resume converter web page (you can also simply scroll up, it’s this very web page)
  • Enter your LinkedIn profile’s address, and press the “Convert to Resume” button.
  • Review your newly imported LinkedIn resume, pick an ATS-friendly template, use our AI Writer to rewrite it, analyze it with our resume checker — Kickresume gives you plenty of tools to make your LinkedIn resume stand out.

However, you probably wouldn’t want to stop there. Your LinkedIn profile — and, by extension, your newly imported resume — probably isn’t yet tailored to a specific job opening. Leaving it as such would be a missed opportunity.

This is how to create a resume from your LinkedIn profile:

How can I improve the resume I exported from LinkedIn?

Don’t forget to make at least some changes to your newly imported LinkedIn resume.

For instance, your resume can usually benefit from minor formatting changes , as some of the original LinkedIn formatting can get lost during the importing process.

You should also remove any LinkedIn-specific phrases from your new resume. You might not want phrase like “Let’s connect” or “Open to opportunities” appear on your resume.

Add resume-specific sections , such as hobbies or skills, and finally, tailor your new resume to each specific job opening you’re applying for.

Finally, you can even let AI rewrite your entire resume  using our AI Resume Rewriter . It’s easy to use and it will rewrite your resume in a language that sounds more professional.

I’ve created a resume from my LinkedIn profile. Can I download it for free?

Yes, you can. While it’s true that not all resume templates and customization options are free (we need to make money somehow), there are still several high-quality resume templates available.

At the end of the day, yes, you can download a full-fledged professional resume for free . Just make sure to avoid any features that are clearly marked with the “Premium” badge inside the app.

On the other hand, if you decide that you like the premium templates better — and would like to land your dream job faster with the help of Kickresume — you can always upgrade to Premium . We offer well-priced plans for every type of customer.

Can I customize the appearance of my new LinkedIn resume?

Yes! You can choose from more than 40 professionally-designed resume templates  and customize each template to your liking.

You can change nearly every part of your new resume. Each template comes with its own set of alternative color schemes and typefaces that were chosen by our expert typographers to complement the overall design.

What’s more, you can also create a cover letter with a design that matches your resume. We always create new templates in resume / cover letter pairs.

Ultimately, there are more than one million possible design combinations for you to explore. The sheer number of customization options gives you the ability to create a resume that stands out from the rest. All within reason, though — no matter how you customize your resume, our designers made sure it will always look good.

I’m having problems converting my LinkedIn to a resume. What should I do?

If you’re having problems converting your LinkedIn profile to a resume, there are two things you can do:

  • Make sure your LinkedIn is filled with enough content.  Remember that an empty profile makes for an equally empty resume. Fill your LinkedIn profile with at least 200 words. For best results, you should have at least the About, Experience, and Education sections of your profile filled with content. The more the merrier.
  • Make sure your profile is not set to private.  Our tool needs to have the ability to access your LinkedIn profile. If your profile is set to private, only your connections can view it. Set your profile to public and try importing your LinkedIn profile again.
  • Make sure that your profile is more than 30 days old.  Sometimes it takes a few days for Kickresume to access your profile. While this usually takes less than the aforementioned 30 days, this time period gives us a bit of an overhead when diagnosing problems related to LinkedIn import.

If you’ve done all of the above and you’re still unable to turn your LinkedIn profile into a resume, please contact our customer support (click the speech bubble icon in the bottom-right corner). Our customer support team is always more than happy to help.

Why You Should Verify Your LinkedIn Profile (and How)

W ith more than 900 million users worldwide, LinkedIn is an essential professional networking tool. Establishing a strong online presence that projects credibility and trustworthiness is paramount. One powerful tool to achieve this on LinkedIn is account verification. This feature allows you to validate your identity and critical profile information, setting you apart in a sea of online profiles.

The advantages of verification

The main advantage of a verified LinkedIn profile is that it eliminates any doubts about your identity and the accuracy of the information you share. This is vital when forging new connections or building relationships with potential employers or clients.

However, that’s not the only benefit. LinkedIn has confirmed that its algorithm prioritizes verified profiles in search results. This translates into increased exposure to people seeking individuals with your skills and qualifications.

The disadvantages of verification

I spoke with  Maggie Mistal , Life Purpose Career and Executive Coach, about profile verification, and she's not excited about it. She's concerned that it won't incentivize the right behaviors for using LinkedIn successfully. For optimal identity verification and getting noticed on LinkedIn, she recommends maintaining a robust and active profile.

Simple elements are key: a professional photo, a compelling headline, and a summary outlining your experience and goals. Additionally, staying active demonstrates your expertise – post accomplishments, support others, and comment thoughtfully on relevant posts. Finally, don't underestimate the power of recommendations. 'Having another person endorse your specific skills provides valuable career feedback,' she emphasizes."

Getting LinkedIn verification

LinkedIn verification lets you confirm your identity along with certain aspects of your profile so people browsing your profile will know your account is authentic. This type of verification is especially important for people who are just starting out and can't show their identity in the way that Mistal advocates.

There are three main verification types:

Identity verification

You must provide LinkedIn’s verification partner with a government-issued ID to confirm your identity. In the U.S., Canada, or Mexico, that’s CLEAR, and for other countries, it’s Persona. If you're concerned about sharing your data with CLEAR or Persona, this is a non-starter, but if you've already verified your identity with LinkedIn's partner, there are a few additional risks.

When I verified my identity, it was simple because I already had a CLEAR account. I logged into my account and connected it to my LinkedIn profile. If you don’t have a CLEAR account, you can create a free account.

Workplace verification

If you’re still at a company, you can use your work email address for verification. Another method, if your employer supports it, is to use your Microsoft Entra Verified ID.

Educational institution verification

To verify your listed university or school, you need a current, valid email address issued by the institution. LinkedIn is currently working with select educational institutions but has plans to expand.

Upon successful verification, a small badge will appear on your profile.

Final thoughts

Account verification on LinkedIn is an excellent way to boost your professional reputation, rise above the competition, and expand your network with confidence. It's a simple, worthwhile step that can significantly enhance your LinkedIn experience.

A third of hiring managers don't want to hire older workers or Gen Zers

  • About one-third of hiring managers in a survey admitted bias against Gen Zers or older candidates.
  • Forty-two percent of managers consider job seekers' ages when reviewing résumés , per Resume Builder.
  • Some career advisors suggest removing the year you graduated from a résumé and LinkedIn profile.

Insider Today

If you're looking for a job and you're a Gen Zer or an older worker , you might be out of luck with some hiring managers.

A survey from Resume Builder found that 36% of hiring managers said they were biased against Gen Z candidates, and 34% said they had concerns about hiring candidates over the age of 60.

Ageism isn't new, of course, though the survey findings are a reminder that even in a strong job market, it can still be tough to land a new gig . Having people discount your abilities because of how young or old you are doesn't help.

"You need to be aware of pitfalls like age bias," Stacie Haller, the chief career advisor at Resume Builder, told Business Insider. "You have to know the landscape you're in."

Resume Builder surveyed a pool of 1,000 hiring managers in March, and 42% of them said age is a factor when going over résumés. To determine a candidate's age, the hiring managers said they've used methods like tallying years of experience, looking for the year someone graduated, and even checking out photos, the survey found.

Delete the year you graduated

Some candidates might choose not to put the year they graduated on their CV, concerned about recruiters doing the math. In the survey, six in 10 hiring managers said job seekers should "always" include the year they graduated, but about four in 10 said candidates sometimes shouldn't or should never include the year.

Some TikTokers who focus on career advice encourage people to remove their graduation years from their résumés so that young candidates avoid getting dinged for not having enough experience and older workers don't get dumped for having too much.

Related stories

Haller endorses that philosophy. "It matters that you got the degree. Does it matter if you got it last year or 20 years ago? It shouldn't," she said.

Haller added that recruiters determined to weed out groups they don't like can often still find a way, even when job applicants strip their résumés and LinkedIn profiles of indicators like graduation dates. "If you're somebody who really is biased against folks, those people go to Facebook to check you out," she said.

There are federal laws designed to protect workers over 40 from age discrimination. Some states also have provisions meant to shield younger members of the workforce from discriminatory hiring, according to the US Equal Employment Opportunity Commission. But proving bias based on age can be difficult, as BI has previously reported.

The Goldilocks generation

So why are some hiring managers not down with younger or older workers? One reason could be that hiring managers themselves are often from a different generation, Haller said. More than six in 10 survey respondents were between 25 and 44 years old. It's an indication, she said, that these managers, who might be in their first role leading others, could "seem to be biased against everybody younger than them and older than them."

Among the hiring managers who admitted to bias against Gen Z job seekers, more than three-quarters cited younger workers' lack of experience. About six in 10 managers pointed to what they've seen as a tendency among Gen Zers to job-hop. And a similar portion of respondents questioned the work ethic and professionalism of the youngest slice of the workforce.

The reasons given for bias against older workers were nothing new. Three-quarters of respondents were concerned an older worker might soon retire. Nearly two-thirds were worried older candidates would experience health problems, and almost half the hiring managers said they worried that older workers wouldn't have sufficient experience with technology.

Showing up to an interview and looking too old could also be a problem for job applicants. In the survey, four in 10 hiring managers said if a candidate has an "elderly" appearance, they'd be less inclined to consider the applicant. And 36% of hiring managers recommended that candidates over 60 take steps to look younger in interviews.

Barbara Corcoran , a "Shark Tank" judge and a septuagenarian herself, has given similar advice.

Some hiring managers who were surveyed also had advice for younger workers: Try to look older. Nineteen percent of hiring managers said a "youthful appearance" was a turnoff. More than one-third of the hiring managers polled said candidates aged 18 to 27 should "try to appear older during interviews."

Haller said that while bias works against a range of job seekers, Gen Z has a specific challenge because many young people were sidelined early in their careers by the pandemic and may be ill-prepared to enter the workplace. Some started their jobs remotely, which made it harder for them to build skills and nail basics like how to dress in the office.

But, she added, one generation dumping on another is nothing new.

"Every generation gets talked about. The millennials, at one point, were entitled. Nobody wanted to hire them," she said. "And now they're the age group that's biased against everybody else."

Israel finds the body of a hostage killed in Gaza, while talks will resume on a cease-fire

Israel’s army said it had found the body of elad katzir and believed he was killed in january by militants with islamic jihad.

Muslims pray on Laylat al-Qadr, or night of power, that marks the last 10 days of the holy month of Ramadan, at the Al-Aqsa Mosque compound in Jerusalem's Old City, Friday, April 5, 2024.

Israel’s military said Saturday it had recovered the body of a 47-year-old farmer who was held hostage in Gaza, while negotiators prepared to begin another round of talks on brokering a cease-fire and securing the release of the remaining hostages, six months into the war.

Israel’s army said it had found the body of Elad Katzir and believed he was killed in January by militants with Islamic Jihad, one of the groups that entered southern Israel in the Oct. 7 attack, killed more than 1,200 people and took about 250 hostages.

Katzir had been abducted along with his mother, Hanna, who was released in November. His father, Avraham, was killed during the attack in Nir Oz, a border community that suffered some of Israel’s heaviest losses.

The discovery renewed pressure on Israel’s government for a deal to get the remaining hostages freed, as families have long feared time is running out. At least 36 hostages in captivity have been confirmed dead, while about half of the original number have been released.

Meanwhile, the toll of Israel’s ongoing offensive in Gaza is measured in tens of thousands of deaths and more than a million Palestinians displaced.

“We have arrived at a terrible milestone,” the U.N. humanitarian chief Martin Griffiths said in a statement marking six months and noting “the immediate prospect of a shameful man-made famine.”

Griffiths added: “We face the unconscionable prospect of further escalation in Gaza, where no one is safe and there is nowhere safe to go. An already fragile aid operation continues to be undermined by bombardments, insecurity and denials of access.”

Israelis are divided on the approach by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and his government after multiple rounds of stalled cease-fire negotiations. A week ago, tens of thousands of Israelis thronged central Jerusalem in the largest anti-government protest since the country went to war.

The negotiations will resume on Sunday, according to an Egyptian official and Egypt’s state-owned Al Qahera TV. The official spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak publicly about the negotiations.

U.S. President Joe Biden has sent CIA Director Bill Burns to Egypt for additional talks about the hostages, a cease-fire and securing the country’s border with Gaza.

A Hamas delegation will arrive on Sunday to join the talks, the militant group said.

Hamas has insisted on linking a phased end to the war — not a temporary cease-fire — to any agreement releasing hostages. It has said it will agree to release 40 hostages as part of an initial six-week cease-fire deal that would include the release of Palestinian prisoners from Israeli jails. Hamas also has demanded the return of displaced people to devastated northern Gaza and an increase in the delivery of humanitarian aid throughout the territory.

Israel has offered to allow only 2,000 displaced Palestinians — mainly women, children and older people — to the north daily during the proposed six-week cease-fire.

The efforts to revive negotiations come days after international condemnation of Israeli airstrikes that killed seven humanitarian workers with the World Central Kitchen charity. The Israeli military has described the strike as a tragic error. Aid groups say the mistake is hardly an anomaly.

The killings halted aid deliveries on what had been seen as a crucial new sea route for humanitarian aid directly to Gaza as the U.N. and partners warn of famine.

In Jabaliya, a refugee camp near Gaza City, families scrounged for mallow leaves to make a thin broth to break the daily Ramadan fast. “Life has become miserable. They (daughters) tell me, ‘Father, you are feeding us mallow, mallow, mallow every day. We want to eat fish, chicken, canned food. We are craving eggs, or anything,’” said Wael Attar, who shelters in a school as part of the 1.7 million people displaced in Gaza.

The war’s death toll in Gaza is now 33,137, the territory’s Health Ministry said. Its toll doesn’t differentiate between civilians and combatants, but it has said women and children make up the majority of the dead.

The ministry said the bodies of 46 Palestinians killed in Israeli airstrikes had been brought to hospitals in the past 24 hours — the lowest such daily tally in months.

Israel has blamed Hamas for civilian deaths in Gaza, accusing it of operating in residential communities and public areas like hospitals.

Gaza’s southernmost city of Rafah now holds more than half of the territory’s 2.3 million people, and Israel’s vow to carry out a ground offensive there has caused weeks of dread and warnings even from Israel’s top ally, the United States.

An Egyptian official on Friday called Israel’s most recent proposal to evacuate civilians from Rafah an “unrealistic and unworkable plan.” Egypt rejected it and again threatened to suspend parts of the 46-year-old Camp David Accords that facilitate security cooperation between the states.
