Nai Nabhannu La 5 movie review: A beautiful love story kills its own crux

You need not say ‘Nai’ (No) if someone requests you to go watch the latest Kollywood release, Nai Nabhannu La 5 . But make sure that the person asking is not your childhood sweetheart.

The movie is interesting, but it further mystifies an already complex idea of love, including its benefits and costs. Despite having strengths in its intriguing plot and emotional presentation, the movie, as it reaches its end, fails to appeal to the audience, arguably because of its own attempt to complicate the simple yet beautiful story.

The deconstruction of central message

The plot is simple. Clever and beautiful teenage girl Anjana (played by debutante Sedrina Sharma)’s infatuation with a pleasingly handsome Neer (played by Anubhav Regmi and Abhishek Nepal for different ages) ends in cruel tragedy of her death. The girl’s twin sister Ranjana (Swastima Khadka) knows about Neer from the deceased sister’s diary and wants to make him her man. Neer, however, is not interested and keeps ignoring her. She continues her desperate efforts to woo him.

The audience expects the movie to end here. All mysteries knitted in the first half are skillfully unraveled in the second. The central question that the movie poses—why is Neer not pleased by the lady who does everything to win his heart—is answered by a complicated revelation in the second half.

But, the movie does not end here. The writers and directors make Ranjana and Neer fall in love, and it is something that people who believe in ‘true love’ (if there exists anything like this) cannot stand. Neer, who had been refusing to accept Ranjana in his life despite her honest and dishonest attempts, suddenly changing his mind at the end is beyond logic. The story deserves a tragic end, but it turns out to be a romantic comedy. The final five minutes deconstruct the entire message the movie creates in two hours.

This is the point where you may feel that it is okay to forget your childhood sweetheart and move on with any stubborn person you meet. You may fail to notice that the movie’s motive is exactly the opposite. Neither is this message pleasing to any kind of audience. Lovebirds feel their emotions crushed here.

Almost all scenes are significant in the plot movement. There are no subplots inserted just to lengthen the movie. Neither are there too many characters, who would give nothing to the movie itself, but just confuse the audience. The movie is unified and compact in its action.

The compactness is perfect in respect of time and place as well. Past and present are juxtaposed beautifully; and this juxtaposition is decisive in developing suspense in the audience. The unfolding of connection between the families of Neer and Anjana just before the intermission further adds to the curiosity.

Yet there are some minor flaws in the plot. The first half is apparently misinforming as most members of the audience believe Ranjana is Anjana herself—the lady frequently claims she is in Neer’s heart though Neer does not confess it and no one calls her with her name. Punning names are used and that they are twins is concealed throughout the first half—just to deceive the audience. Likewise, no information is provided about who Neer’s dad is and why his mom is alone, waiting to get married for the second time.

Neer’s role in stopping the divorce of Anjana’s parents is too mature for his age. So is Anjana’s obsession with the habit of diary writing since her early childhood.

It is okay that both the lead characters belong to the high class, but the film does not include anything about poor people of Nepali society. Likewise, men’s role is very nominal here: either they are clowns (Pandit and his mate) or unsympathetic professionals (doctor). The role of Anjana’s dad is limited by the story itself. These minor issues make the entire story more artificial than realistic.

Emotions, but not logic, rule the movement from beginning to end.

Regmi is as sweet as always and newbie Sharma perfectly suits him. Nepal competently meets the demand for a shy, unhappy character. Khadka has acted as stubborn late teen; and she does it quite well.

Established artistes Keki Adhikari, Priyanka Karki, Dilip Rayamajhi and Niruta Singh perform well as family members of the hero and the heroine. Buddhi Tamang and Jaya Nanda Lama jointly make audience laugh though their roles contribute nothing to the plot.

Cinematic technicalities

Cinematography in overall is commendable. However, wide shots have been used on more than necessary occasions. The repetition of similar shots to show the single location feels monotonous to some audience. For example, the second song of the movie, Timro Aankhama Aankha Judhai, is marred by too many repeated shots. In comparison, the first song, Pheri Kaha Paainchha Ra Ghumera, is nicer. The choreography is excellent. But, its lyrics are too philosophical for the age of children the music is made for.

Almost 90 per cent of the movie is set in Ilam. Doubtlessly, the beautiful green garden pleases the audience’s eyes in the beginning. But, by the end, it turns to be too much of a good thing.

The inclusion of posters of the movie’s prequels in some scenes is a helpful reminder that it is a sequel. Likewise, the characters talk of ‘phuchche’ and songs of Nai Nabhannu La (the prequel). For new audience, however, the allusion is a bit unnecessary.

There isn’t a single ‘fight scene’ in the movie. It can be both a strength and a weakness for the movie.

The movie is of average standard. It aims at appealing to people’s emotions and making them feel feeble in front of the undeniable fate. It has some food for thought too, but the central message contradicts itself.

Go watch the movie and revitalise the soft dimensions of your heart. Don’t try to overthink about philosophies, lest you get confused.

Then, many years later Anjana's twin sister falls in love with older Neer, however Neer isn't interested in her.[10] Anjana's sister and Neer keep walking on those streets where they used to walk. She tells him that she is his love but he does not care about her. He has no interest in her. At last, she leaves him on boat and he goes to her home to see her. However, he finds out that Anjana's sister is just sitting there and reading the diary written by him. She says she has met him only once. He then realizes that the one with whom he spent all those moments was Anjana herself. He had encountered with her spirit. He then returns to the same place and pleads with Anjana to come back. However, Anjana's sister appears there and they both hug each other.

Nai Nabhannu La 5 goes on floors

The principal photography of the fifth installment of Nai Nabhannu La has started in Jhapa on Monday. The film will be shot around picturesque areas in Jhapa and Ilam in the month ahead before the crew comes back to Kathmandu, the producers said.

Directed by Bikash Acharya, Nai Nabhannu La 5 will mark debut for actors Abhishek Nepal and Sedrina Sharma; Nepal is slated to play the lead alongside actress Swastima Khadka.

“We aim to complete the film within a month, some 28 days in the East and then a week in Kathmandu,” Acharya said, “Sure, the film carries on the flavour of its predecessors but then we are also working hard towards presenting it in a new way.”

Acharya informed that the producers target to release the film on August 24; which will have the film likely to clash at box office with the upcoming Bhuwan KC-production Captain.

Alongside Khadka, Sharma and Nepal, Nai Nabhannu La 5 will feature actors Dilip Rayamajhi, Keki Adhikari and Priyanka Karki, among others.

Nai Nabhannu La (2010) Movie Review: Tragic Love Story

Bikash Raj Acharya’s film Nai Nabhannu La is an unforgettable love story for Nepalese spectators. Jiwan Luitel delivered an excellent performance throughout the entire movie’s runtime.

Nai Nabhannu La Movie Story

Shishir (Jiwan Luitel) and Ritu (Richa Singh Thakuri) attend the same college. Shishir is Ritu’s senior at college. When they have free time, they spend it together. Shishir is a lovely guy who is deeply in love with Ritu. He will do everything in favor of Ritu, just to see her happy and cheerful. Despite Shishir’s best attempts, Ritu was unable to embrace his love since she had promised her love Basanta (Suman Singh) that they would marry and stay together. Suman is also a great person who cares deeply about Ritu.

One day, the college announces a theater show and invites interested students to submit their names. Shishir refuses his buddies the opportunity to participate in the show, but when he discovers Ritu is participating, he joins without hesitation. After the drama practice, they talk about their college, studies, and daily lives; furthermore, Shishir always wants to have romantic chats. He would always propose to her in a lyrical style, using beautiful phrases. Despite all of Shishir’s purity and devotion, she refuses to accept.

Shishir would come up with thousands of reasons to spend time with Ritu. He would beat up the goons, perform magical acts, and go on extravagant excursions simply to make Ritu happy. With these efforts, Ritu gradually falls in love with Shishir. When Ritu discovers she has cancer, she buries her feelings for Shishir, which complicates her living further.

Nai Nabhannu La Movie Cast & Performance

Jiwan Luitel plays the romantic character Shishir, who is constantly in an amorous mood. Jiwan Luitel’s portrayal of an affectionate particularly a one-sided lover, is outstanding throughout the film. His amorous conversation and contributions make the film more engaging and lovable. Fans, particularly female fans, went berserk in the theater while watching his performance. The ending causes the audience to cry and melancholy. Jiwan’s character exemplifies how true love can offer happiness and hope to a person. Very impressive performance!

Richa Singh Thakuri plays Ritu, the female lead character in the film Nai Nabhannu La. She is one of the most attractive characters in the film. Richa presents a lovely character who is more concerned with her career than with any distractions. The amorous moment between Richa Singh and Jiwan Luitel is one of the film’s highlights. Richa’s portrayal captures the delightful romantic mood with Jiwan Luitel, as well as the anguish and despair of her personal predicament. Her performances move the crowd to tears. Richa Singh Thakuri has done her best to justify her role in the picture.

Suman Singh plays the supporting character Basanta. He is seen presenting as a cheerful and nice person. Suman does an excellent job rationalizing the character in a movie. His character demonstrates that money is meaningless when it comes to rescuing your life partner; he would do anything to see them alive and happy. Suman’s lighthearted quips and generous demeanor make him more fascinating and appealing. Good performance!

Direction & Story Telling

Bikash Raj Acharya, the writer/director of the film Nai Nabhannu La, has done an excellent job presenting one of the best romance films to Nepalese moviegoers. The filmmaker has masterfully presented a fascinating and interesting film. The writers of the film, Bikash Raj Acharya, Pradip Dahal, and Arundev Joshi, have skillfully written every narrative and sequence in the screenplay, and justification can be seen in the cast’s performance. The multi-layered narrative brings tears to the audience’s eyes. The movie Nai Nabhannu La features great music and songs composed by Mahesh Khadka, which are a pleasure for the ears. Wonderful romantic flick of the year.

Movie Verdict

The movie Nai Nabhannu La is one of the best romantic films of the year, with an excellent script, performance, and music. The romantic chemistry between Richa Singh and Jiwan Luitel will keep you interested and intrigued throughout the entire movie. Nai Nabhannu La is a must-see for fans of love dramas. You’ll adore it.
