Project Z Review – A Muddled Thriller

How is Sundeep Kishan’s performance? Sundeep Kishan is alright in the role of a cop. It is designed to suit his age which is a plus. It is a mellowed down version of his usual self. There is nothing over the top in his act which at times gives an impression that he is just another character and not lead. The actor’s voice is dubbed in Telugu, and that takes away a lot from overall engagement with the film.

The movie takes time to get going initially. It isn’t until we reach the pre-interval portion that things start to make some sense. Once we are in sync, it is a reasonably predictable watch. It becomes a cat and mouse chase game between the police and criminal after we know the core plot.

The director handles overall plot well, but it isn’t as engaging or thrilling as it could have been. On a positive side, it could have turned out to be a disastrous watch like a Sri Valli, but luckily that is also not the case. What we have is a film, that is far from a disaster but an average fare as a science-fiction thriller.

Right from the start of concentration on Rudra (Danial Balaji) till the revelation of the main plot in the second half, Project Z is engaging. The entire love track seems to be a forceful insertion into the story to get to the ending. The problem is too much explaining of the science and less thrilling elements. The thrills which are present in the second half are predictable for the genre. The climax will remind Telugu audience of a critically acclaimed romantic drama. Overall, if one doesn’t mind the genre and little boredom, they can give it a try.

Project z (2023) - movie review.

Art imitates life or is it the other way round?

Opening with an aerial shot (supplied by drone) which is reminiscent of The Shining ’s helicopter shots in the opening drive to the hotel, Project Z knows exactly what it is doing as a group of film students make their way in a campervan to an old motel in the mountains.  But there’s a twist here:  Project Z is a found footage movie by way of Norway as zombies descend onto the shoot and all hell breaks loose.

It’s one hell of a wild and moody ride, which cinefiles - especially those with a sweet tooth for zombie flicks - are going to love.

Subtle and charming, Project Z takes its time with the characters, allowing the crew and the actors in the movie to worm their way into your consciousness.  There’s no rush here to get to the creepy crawlies which I appreciate.  Sure, sure, there’s a couple of close calls involving meteors and a landslide, but nothing really tips the hat as this found footage film plays out like a true making-of featurette . . . until the zombies are unleashed.

But there are issues with the actors.  Iben ( Iben Akerlie ), the leading actress, is having an affair with Julie’s boyfriend, Arthur ( Arthur Berning ) would rather do a Spike Lee joint, and Dennis ( Dennis Storhøi , who starred in The 13th Warrior with Antonio Banderas ) won’t stop talking about Mr. Banderas .  Yes, the lines between reality and fantasy really are blurred in this fun film.

Written and directed by Henrik Martin Dahlsbakken, Project Z is an easy watch as it embraces the zaniness of the crew, complete with a musical sequence, sprinkles in a little otherworldly chaos on their way to the motel, and then goes completely apeshit with the situations and produces something that is as lively as it is fun and contagious as a creature is revealed, meteorites exploited, and - suddenly - ZOMBIES!

Or is it all just part of the movie?!

Sundeep Kishan and Lavanya Tripathi’s Project Z has been waiting for the right time for its release since several months. Project Z is gearing up for its release in September second week, while the Tamil version, Mayavan, is hitting the screens on September 1st.

In a recent promotional interview, Project Z’s Telugu producers revealed the interesting concept the film is made with. Project Z is a sci-fi thriller which explores the future after ten years from now. Acclaimed Tamil director Nalan Kumarasamy had penned the film’s script.

Popular Tamil producer CV Kumar has turned director with this movie. Lavanya Tripathi is the female lead and Bollywood star Jackie Shroff plays an important role. The Telugu version’s release date is yet to be announced. ASK Basheed and SK Karimunnisa are releasing the film in Telugu.

Watch Project Z

Project Z is a 2017 Indian Telugu-language science fiction action-thriller film starring Sandeep Kishan and Lavanya Tripati. The movie is directed by C.V. Kumar and produced by J. Sandeep Kishan and Lavanya Tripathi deliver solid performances in their respective roles. Sandeep brings a sense of intensity and urgency to Siddharth's character, while Lavanya portrays Aditi's intelligence and passion well. The chemistry between the two leads is also convincing.

The movie's cinematography and editing are commendable. The visual effects used in the movie are impressive and add to the overall experience of watching the film.
