Sulthan review: Karthi’s action drama exceeds expectations
Sulthan review: karthi starrer comes with high production values and strong emotional beats, making it an engrossing watch..
Sulthan movie cast: Karthi, Rashmika Mandanna, Napoleon Sulthan movie director: Bakkiyaraj Kannan Sulthan movie rating: 4 stars
A motherless child, Sulthan (played by Karthi) is raised by a group of hardened criminals. He loves these 100 men as brothers but despises their taste for violence. Following the death of his father, the responsibility to take care of these men falls on the shoulders of Sulthan. That is when he decides to transform them and teach them to live as civilized people. It is a Herculean task, but the loyalty and the love that these men have towards him, gives Sulthan a fighting chance.
Sulthan aims to keep his brothers safe from the police operation, which is trying to rid Chennai of rowdyism. He thinks he has got just the opportunity when Yogi Babu’s Bob Aka Babu concocts a lie about a marriage proposal to him from a remote village. Sulthan decides to take the entire entourage to the village in a bid to keep them away from trouble. He doesn’t know that he is walking into just the situation he is so desperate to avoid.
The film’s high production values and strong emotional beats makes it an engrossing watch. Director Bakkiyaraj Kannan’s solidity expands on the belief that men are naturally good. The seasoned criminals who make the entire city shiver are powerless in front of Sulthan. They don’t raise a finger even when Sulthan pushes them around. The film also tracks the inner journey of the protagonist who learns that he can’t make an omelette without cracking a few eggs.
Every scene in the movie works both emotionally and logically. Bakkiyaraj composes scenes that allow him to take full advantage of the cinematic experience of showing 100-strong men dance in a battle formation. There are a few Zack Snyder-esque cinematic moments, especially in the climactic action sequence.
Bakkiyaraj Kannan’s Sulthan is a massive improvement on his first movie, Remo. The 2016 romantic comedy with Sivakarthikeyan in the lead followed a man’s attempts to lure the girl of his dreams. The hero was willing to go to any length to trick the girl into falling in love with him. He even dresses like a nurse to achieve his goal. I had a problem with the way the hero justified his twisted deception in the name of love. In other words, I had problems with Bakkiyaraj’s writing that glorified an act that lacked decency and courage.
From Remo to Sulthan, it is a giant leap for Bakkiyaraj. The director has rid his writing of any and all attempts to rationalize every action of his protagonist. Instead, he puts his hero in a difficult situation, forcing him to make a choice. This builds up a lot of dramatic tension and helps us warm up to the hero who goes through a lot of trouble to do the right thing, which will allow him to sleep at night peacefully.

Sulthan review: Karthi headlines a highly predictable but fun action drama
Sulthan movie review: karthi stars in bakkiyaraj kannan’s new film that borrows heavily from films such as thevar magan and maharshi..
Bakkiyaraj Kannan’s Sulthan (not to be confused with Salman Khan’s Sultan) is what you get when you take popular selling points from a few highly successful and celebrated commercial films and package it in a way that you aren’t disappointed even when most of what you watch unfold on the screen feels very familiar.
Karthi plays Vikram aka Sulthan, a robotics engineer. Sulthan’s father (played by Napoleon) plays a do-gooder, a messiah with an army of rowdies (nearly 100 of them) at his disposal. When a new police commissioner vows to make the city crime-free, he comes after the gang managed by Sulthan’s father with the intention of bumping them in an 'encounter'. Sulthan intervenes and requests for an opportunity to reform the rowdies but the process isn’t as easy as he had envisioned. Does Sulthan succeed in reforming the rowdies forms the crux of the story.
Watch trailer for Sulthan:
From Ram Gopal Varma’s Sarkar to Mahesh Babu’s Maharshi and Kamal Haasan’s Thevar Magan; Sulthan borrows heavily from these films. Sulthan’s effort to reform the rowdies via farming is a plot point very similar to what Mahesh Babu chooses to do in Maharshi (he leaves everything and takes up farming for his best friend). Karthi’s effort to make people give up their hooligan ways at the cost of his own life is very similar to what we saw in Thevar Magan. In spite of borrowing from quite a few films, Sulthan still manages to engage and entertain, making it a highly predictable but fun action drama.

The film stands out for its action choreography. Few of the action stretches deliver an engaging experience. However, the film hardly makes any impact with its storytelling or characters. Except Karthi’s character, no other actor gets a meaty part to essay. Rashmika, in her maiden appearance in Tamil cinema, is mostly sidelined and so are the actors who play the lead antagonists. Sulthan is Karthi’s show all the way and he’s in his element, shining in a character he couldn’t have played any better.
Sulthan is your quintessential commercial action film that panders to the gallery and is mostly engaging, thanks to the over-the-top treatment and packaging.

SULTHAN MOVIE REVIEW CLICK TO RATE THE MOVIE
Sulthan is an action commercial film written and directed by Bakkiyaraj Kannan, produced by SR Prabhu and SR Prakash Babu under the banner Dream Warrior Pictures. It has Karthi and Rashmika Mandanna in the lead roles while Yogi Babu, Lal, Napoleon, and Ramachandra Raju form the supporting cast.
Karthi plays the titular role of Sulthan, who takes over as the leader of his father's gang of henchmen and vows to reform them, make their lives better, and erase the rowdy tag behind their names. As an alternative he wishes to transform them into farmers. He faces a lot of resistance from various quarters. How he manages to overcome them form the rest of the story.
Karthi has a naturally rugged look and his casting looks on point. A lot has been said about Karthi's acting and he once again proves why he's one of the best performers in the industry. His character has two different shades and he juggles between both with ease. Among the supporting actors Yogi Babu scores well in the comedy scenes and Sendrayan shines in parts. While Rashmika Mandanna has a good screen time, her character could have been written better.
But the writing cannot be dismissed altogether. Writer - Director Bakkiyaraj Kannan tries something very interesting here. Rather than showing the henchmen as ruthless people with no heart, he wants us to empathize with them. And instead of banking on the underprivileged nature of their families and evoking sympathy, he shows us that they can be reformed, if treated in the right way.
The intent of the film is in the right place, but not always does good intent translate into a great film. The screenplay has more lags in the second half and Vivek Mervin's songs doesn't help the cause as well. The songs work well individually but serve as speed breakers to an already slow paced film in the second half mainly.
Yuvan Shankar Raja's background score, however, tries to resuscitate the film for a chunk of its runtime. The score during the action scenes offer great energy and is also enjoyable. On the other hand, Sathyan Sooryan's cinematography complements the film well.
Ramachandra Raju plays one of the antagonists, and here too, the cinematography reminds us of his previous film, KGF, that shot him to fame. Another factor that bogs down the film is the predictability of the narrative. Barring the new perspective in which the henchmen are shown, the film has a lot of clichés which result in the engagement taking a hit.
Sulthan could have been a lot better if the characters other than Karthi had been fleshed out well. It could have also done away with the clichés because of the potential the premise held. Overall, Sulthan will appeal to the mass audiences who enjoy solid commercial flicks.

Sulthan Review: Karthi Saves The Village, The Audience Have To Fend For Themselves
Watching Sulthan in a movie hall is like entering familiar terrain. The characters, the emotional punches and the climactic scenes evoke a sense of déjà vu. The hero looks petite and prim, but he can send a hundred hefty rivals flying. The heroine might have the salon-perfect physical features of Rashmika Mandanna , but she is a farmer who ploughs the field in the hot sun, rears cattle, sells chicken in the village market and tutors NEET aspirants at a private institute.
Sulthan , directed by Bakkiyaraj Kannan , narrates an oft-repeated story about a little prince who has to take up the reins of his kingdom and lead the pack after the death of his father, the Lord (Napolean). Sulthan, the hero ( Karthi Sivakumar ), grew up in a giant mansion in Chennai that, despite the occasional bloody gang wars that result in the death of a few of its inhabitants, lives in love and order. One time, the hero, now a robotics engineer in Mumbai drawing a salary of three hundred thousand a month, returns home to be hit by the realisation that running a violent gang isn’t what he wants his father to do. He makes a heartfelt appeal, “You say these men are like your children. But why didn’t you give them the education that you gave me?”
One has to give it to these generic mass entertainers for holding together the regional film industries in India. They borrow plotlines and narrative devices from each other to cater to an audience they trained over the years to appreciate the homegrown aesthetics of the mass movies.
Sulthan is less a movie than a collage of different successful films. Sulthan’s (Karthi Sivakumar) return to his native village is a trip several heroes have taken before, in South Indian movies of various genres. In Maharshi (2019), Mahesh Babu’s high-flying software engineer transforms when he visits his native village. In Nuvvostanante Nenoddantana (2005), Siddharth, an NRI young man, weeps upon sighting the first sprouts on the farmland he ploughed and sowed. In films like Kathhi and Sarkar , Vijay returned from city to village and Los Angeles to Chennai, to save namma ooru makkal (My people).
Sulthan, an urban guy with modern ambitions, is indifferent towards the suffering of the villagers at first. Soon, with the help of a young woman (Rashmika Mandanna) he had fallen head-over-heels in love with the very first day of arriving in the village, he decides to liberate the villagers from the hands of a mighty villain (Ramachandra Raju) and a mining mafia run by a man who speaks Tamil like he is chewing gum. Unless you have been living under a rock all your life, you know how this movie ends.
Like these other movies, Sulthan caters to the lowest common denominator by preaching the virtue of village life and agriculture. It uses an ever-popular trope in mainstream cinema ﹣a hero who takes on powerful corporations with the help of the general public, the underdogs.
But unlike films like Kaththi that made an effort to do something novel within this framework, Sulthan is exhaustingly complacent. Sulthan preaches about pacifism, but since he is the quintessential mass hero, he cannot say no to performing an absurd action sequence in front of an audience. A pivotal scene in the film has Sulthan fighting off a group of armed men at night while maintaining complete silence. The villainy of the bad guy is tuned to the highest decibel using shots of him beating up frail old men and children so that the audience would root for the hero when he takes him on in the final sequence. The villagers are objects of poverty. They exhibit their suffering by beating their chest and wailing as the villains go about raiding the village. But the heroine isn’t treated as one of the villagers. She is beautiful, composed and idealistic. She represents the idyll and heralds the hero’s transformation. In a song where the hero follows her everywhere, swooning over her beauty, she is seen working on the farm while maintaining a perfect hairdo and make-up.

Karthi delivers a mature performance as Sulthan. Rashmika has regressed a long way down the road from her Dear Comrade days. In Sulthan , she could have sent in her lifesize cut-out to play the role. Hareesh Peradi plays a police commissioner whose callous and illegal encounter killings gets a pat on the back from the hero. Peradi’s performance is stagey and dull.
For an audience who wants to look beyond the small and off-beat films made during the pandemic lockdown, Sulthan might come across as a relieving return to the familiar. There is little else to be said about this worn-out mass entertainer.

Sulthan Movie Review: Bad villains and forced messaging stifle a great premise
Rating: ( 3 / 5).
It’s impossible not to spot the mythological underpinnings in Sulthan . As Sulthan (Karthi) asks a cop, what if Lord Krishna had taken the side of the Kauravas? What if he had won them over and helped them reform, not through war, but through affection and advice? Much before you notice that his girlfriend in the film is named Rukmini (Rashmika), you realise who Sulthan is in this film, and who his 100 violent uncles are. He’s also likened to Abhimanyu at the beginning, as his mother (named Annalakshmi for a reason), pregnant with him, talks of wanting to reform all the murderous men in their family. There’s also the Mahabharata idea of Sulthan being forced by circumstances to fight his very own uncles. There are Ramayana references too, with Sulthan getting dubbed ‘nooru thalai Raavanan’. The corporate villain who calls him this, dubs himself an ‘ oththa thalai Raavanan’, and says he can purchase as many heads as he wants for money.
Director: Bakkiyaraj Kannan
Cast: Karthi, Rashmika Mandanna, Napoleon, Lal, Yogi Babu
There’s also the constant suggestion that Sulthan is The One, with a Baahubali -esque scene in which the baby is held aloft by the uncles. Random strangers in a village, call for him to rescue them from killers who want to burn them all down and grab their land for the benefit of a greedy capitalist. Sulthan himself is constantly wrestling with notions about his identity. He has studied robotics and wants to return to the city, but does he want to leave home? Can he suppress his own violent instincts, nurtured so lovingly under the tutelage of his vicious uncles?
I quite enjoyed that the last scene you see before the interval has him looking quite confused, as he comes to grips with the gravity of what he has just done. These are fascinating portions in Sulthan . I also liked that the film speaks of reformation and rejects the notion that people are bad by nature and cannot be remedied. At the foundation of this film is the almost mythical relationship between Sulthan and his uncles, with there being half-hearted attempts to show these men of violence some empathetic understanding.
The same film that argues for their humanity, also keeps undercutting it by showing them as creatures driven by bloodlust. In one scene, they are all sleeping, but the mere whiff of a blood drop is enough to get them all aroused. Sulthan is also often shown whipping about his beloved uncles, like they were cattle to be shepherded. He’s also shown treating his bodyguard like a pet dog, and in one scene, even has the latter jumping into a river to recover a stone he flings into it, only so he can get some privacy.
When we remember that Sulthan accuses his father (Napoleon) of leading men to slaughter, it’s hard not to wonder how different he is, when, for his mission, he commands his bodyguard to fight till death? Had these all been peripheral characters, it might not have mattered as much, but they are all—to the credit of this film—very much in the thick of things. Given that the central objective of the narrative concerns the reformation and humanisation of Sulthan’s violent uncles, should this film not have resisted the easy temptation to paint them as Sulthan’s marionettes? Should this film not have avoided the background sound of a buffalo grunting when Yogi Babu’s character gets shown?
Even disregarding these problems, Sulthan ’s premise could have made for great masala cinema, had it been more thoughtful about its many masala elements, including its love angle, song picturisation, messaging, fight choreography, and most importantly, villains. The premise leads to some clever story ironies: like Sulthan having to take up arms in order to prevent his uncles from doing it, but look at the attention, or the lack of it, given to Rukmini, who, for all the passion she has for her land, gets to do precious little except making angry, ‘cute’ faces at Sulthan. No wonder then that he calls her an ‘angry bird’. A woman surrounded by violent strangers—and with a father who prioritises his mission over the safety of his daughter—nobody, not even Sulthan, seems to worry about her discomfort, all of which gets dismissed as ‘adorable anger’. As Sulthan says in a scene, “ Podi mutta kanni. ”
While you understand why the energetic opening number is picturised the way it is, the love songs feel only like commercial compromises. As for the action set-pieces, the film does better here. I quite enjoyed the ideas that set them up, more than the fights themselves. I liked that Sulthan’s choice of weapon in the opening fight is a bullock cart axle. I liked the whole ‘silent fight’ conceit of another set-piece. And even in that wrestling duel between Sulthan and an uncle, there’s plenty of emotional strength that serves as fuel. I wish though that we do away with the idea of people bouncing off the ground in these fights—or at least show restraint in shooting them. It’s hard to feel thrilled about Sulthan finally cracking the whip, literally, when you are also fighting laughter at how the bad men are bouncing away like rubber balls. Among the biggest issues in this film is—and how many recent films have we said this about—the simplistic, superficial messaging about the importance of farmers. The idea of violent men choosing sweat over blood is interesting, but the generic virtue-signalling only trivialises it all.
Perhaps the biggest problem in Sulthan is its charmless villain duo. One is a paid hand, like Sulthan’s uncles in a sense, while the other, his boss, is the Evil Corporate Boss ™. The former is the sort of bad man who is kind enough to call in advance before he strikes, so Sulthan can prepare and wait. The latter, meanwhile, is a generic suit-clad evil man, who’s more bark than bite. But hey, after Bhoomi , I guess we should just be glad that this corporate boss at least doesn’t urinate into living room flower vases.
Sulthan is a film that likely would have benefitted without these cardboard cutouts, and with more focus on the Sulthan-uncles relationship dynamics. How can he save them? How can they resist years of indoctrination? What does he need to give up? This is, after all, the main premise of this film, and one that screams of potential.
However, Sulthan , the film, isn’t just content with turning them into farmers; it also wants to raise pro-farming slogans. The film keeps seeing the world in binaries: science or farming, city or village… Sulthan is shown to step away from his world of robotics. Rukmini speaks with distaste about life in a city like Mumbai or somewhere in America. In dealing with simplistic, populist messaging, the film fails to expound its promising premise.
If it had not been led astray by its temptation to preach, Sulthan’s uncles may actually not have turned out to be lifeless creatures of violence who are utilised simply to propel Sulthan’s status as a saviour. They might actually have come across as real, complex men, who are more than the violence they are hired for. Isn’t this, after all, what Sulthan wanted for them?

Amidst good expectations from the fans and film buffs, Karthi's Sulthan has released in theatres. The film, directed by Bakkiyaraj Kannan of Remo fame has Rashmika Mandanna playing the female lead and it is her debut film in Tamil cinema. Has the film lived up to its expectations? Here is our take on the film!
Sulthan aka Vikram (Karthi) is the son of an aging don (Napoleon) and he is nurtured and raised by the hundreds of rowdies who work for Napoleon. Sulthan's mother passes away after giving birth and the young boy has always been surrounded by only these men. Certain deaths and incidents make Sulthan realize that these rowdies should change for the good. Sulthan takes it up as a mission to reform them, with an additional operation, to save a village from a business tycoon. Did Sulthan succeed in his mission? Watch the film, to know!
Karthi is absolutely charming and energetic as Sulthan and he carries the film forward on his shoulders. It is so fascinating to see Karthi's diversity as an actor. He is able to do strong action-driven films like Theeran and Kaithi, family dramas like Kadaikutty Singam, and now, a fun-filled masala entertainer like Sulthan. He emotes really well and makes several situations appeal better with his acting. Karthi is definitely the major backbone of Sulthan. He scores well with the action moves, as well.
Rashmika Mandanna delivers impressive performance and she looks cute. Due credits to Ishwarya Baaskar, who has dubbed for Rashmika and the voice suits her. Lal's performance is impactful and he comes in handy with his experience. Some of Yogi Babu's oneliners work and some don't. Sathish has been wasted in a blink-and-miss role. The casting of the rowdies have been interestingly done and they add a good flavour to the film. The villains are definitely weakly written and they don't give a tough fit at all. Though Garuda Ram is highly menacing as Jayaseelan, he falls flat when he locks horns against Karthi. For Nawab Shah, it is even weaker. He comes off as a stereotypical business tycoon and delivers no impact.
Director Bakkiyaraj Kannan's sole intention is to deliver an entertaining action masala entertainer and he succeeds to an extent. The first half of the film is quite fun and entertaining and it keeps you invested. However, the problem arises mainly in the second half of the film where the conflicts are resolved. The film loses its josh and fun right after the interval and it becomes too hard to get back on track. The interval fight sequence gives an adrenaline rush and sets the right base for the second half. However, the momentum is not maintained there. Additionally, the film also suffers from certain cliches.
Director Bakkiyaraj Kannan seems to have been inspired by a lot of recent masala action biggies like Baahubali, KGF, and more, and you can sense a vibe of those films in Sulthan. One needs to appreciate him for executing a film of this scale where majority of the scenes have atleast 30 - 40 people (or even more) and it is not an easy task. Had Bakkiyaraj Kannan packed the film even more tight and neat in the second half, Sulthan would have turned out to be a highly entertaining film. The writing looks unexplored at several places. Bakkiyaraj Kannan doesn't delve deep into the conflicts of the main characters. With stronger writing, Sulthan could have appealed even better.
Yuvan Shankar Raja, who was the last member to join the film, has turned out to be one of the heroes. His powerful background score in the action sequences elevates the mass element to a different level. Yuvan's score is definitely one of the highlights of Sulthan. Vivek - Mervin's songs are impressive and they give good support to the film. Sathyan Sooryan's cinematography is interestingly done and he sets a good tonality.
Putting things together, one can say that Sulthan is a pakka theatrical mass entertainer that can be watched for the vibe it gives, despite its several shortcomings.
Verdict: Despite a draggy second half, Sulthan can be watched for its 'mass entertainment' factor!

1986: Sethupathi is a gangster in Madras who has a gang of 100 goons, working as vigilantes. One day, Sethupathi's enemy's barge into their house to kill Sethupathi, but Annalakshmi goes into labor. The gang beat the intruders while Sethupathi is with his wife.
Annalakshmi gives birth to a boy but dies. Sethupathi goes to his wife and gives the boy to his gang member Mansoor, who names him Vikram aka Sulthan. The gang raises Sulthan with love and care, and Sulthan sees them as his brothers. Sulthan grows up and goes abroad to pursue Robotics Engineering.
2021: A village head meets Sethupathi with a request to kill a person named Jayaseelan. The head narrates about the village practices in agriculture. When Jayaseelan asks for their land, they refuse which enrages him, and he kills many farmers and burns their lands. Upon hearing this, Sethupathi promises to kill Jayaseelan.
When asked by Mansoor, Sethupathi tells that they have done many crimes in their life and they can do something good with the case of the head. At the same time, Sulthan arrives at the village in great splendour. One day, the gang is attacked by a few people who pose as pizza delivery men. They injure Sethupathi and a member of the gang, who is critical and admitted to the hospital.
The goon's mother is distraught, leaving Sulthan mentally tarnished. Sulthan angrily confronts Sethupathi and tells him that he is going to leave and never going to come back. Due to this, Sethupathi dies in his sleep. At Sethupathi's funeral, Sulthan finds out that the attackers that night are police officers sent by Commissioner Manickavel with the intent to kill Sethupathi. Sulthan meets him and asks for an opportunity to reform the gang.
Manickavel gives Sulthan 6 months to reform them, but tells him that not a single case should be filed on them in that time. Mansoor gets a phone call from the village head reminding him of the promise made to them. Mansoor sends twenty of the men including Otta Lorry to kill Jayaseelan, but Sulthan forbids them. They try to sneak out to the village but Sulthan catches them. Otta Lorry comes up with a lie that he has a marriage proposal in the village.
Sulthan decides to take the entire gang with him to the village, so they will be out of trouble. The entire village goes along with the lie with a promise made by Mansoor saying that they will kill Jayaseelan. The head's daughter Rukmani acts as the bride. Otta Lorry rejects her as an act, but Sulthan genuinely falls for her. He confesses his love for her to the family and asks for her hand in marriage but she rejects him.
Sulthan tries to woo her but to no avail. The gang wants to leave, but Sulthan tells them that until Rukmani falls in love with her they will not leave. The gang secretly follows Jayaseelan planning to kill him, but their attempts are unsuccessful. The village finds out that Jayaseelan is not after their lands but rather for the iron in a mountain. The only way to stop Jayaseelan is to prove their lands are fertile and that crops can grow on the land, but they only have 6 months.
Sulthan is reprimanded by Rukmani while Mansoor and the gang attempt to kill Jayaseelan at the market, but Sulthan who is in the market stops the attack and yells at the gang. As they prepare to leave, a villager informs the gang that Jayaseelan has taken over the city. Jayaseelan brutally beats all the villagers including Rukmani. An angered Sulthan severely beats up Jayaseelan and his men.
Meanwhile, the police force starts a sting operation to kill all the goons in the city in unofficial encounters to attain peace. Sulthan learns about the news and extends their stay in the village for 5 more months and in their stay, they will practice agriculture. They work day and night in the fields. A corporate businessman arrives at the village and asks Sulthan if he can buy the mountain, but Sulthan refuses.
Enraged, the businessman sends goons at night to kill Sulthan but Sulthan beats all of them. The next day, Michael, one of the members of the gang, attempts to drown someone. Sulthan stops him and tells him to leave the group but later finds out that the man Michael was beating was assaulting a woman. Sulthan apologizes to Michael but he turns bitter towards Sulthan.
The gang's hard work is rewarded when their plants start to grow on their land. The businessman grows enraged after hearing the news, but Amith Raj, who is a part of the Ministry of Mines postpones the inspection so that the businessman can prove that the lands are barren. Rukmani reciprocates Sulthan's feelings and accepts the marriage proposal. Sulthan and Rukmani get engaged in front of the villagers and the gang in a grand celebration.
Sulthan buys 2 acres of land for the whole gang by selling his house and spending his entire saving. That night on the bus, Mansoor gets fatally stabbed by a few people sent by the businessman, but Sulthan beats all of them. Mansoor dies due to his injuries. The gang gets ready to go and kill the businessman but Sulthan stops them. Michael challenges Sulthan to a fight and whoever loses should follow what the winner tells them to do. Sulthan manages to overpower Michael but this leads to the gang loathing him. The gang leaves Sulthan and leaves the village, leaving Sulthan devastated.
The businessman learns that the gang has left Sulthan so he plans to burn the village. Jayaseelan calls Sulthan and tells him that he brought many people to kill Sulthan and the villagers, and they will be coming back. Sulthan decides to protect the village from Jayaseelan and the businessman. Sulthan evacuates all the villagers from the village, but he stays back to protect the village. The businessman and his men arrive at night and burn the crops but Sulthan, his guard Gada and a few farmers arrive and kill many of the businessman's henchmen, but Sulthan gets injured.
Sulthan beats up and kills the businessman and his men. Just then, Jayaseelan and his men arrive with a kidnapped Rukmani, but the gang arrives, when they learn about Sulthan's sacrifices to protect them, and Michael apologises to Sulthan. They reconcile with Sulthan and they kill Jayaseelan and his men. The gang begins to work again in agriculture willingly while Sulthan and Rukmani watch on.

Sulthan Review: A Cumbersome Effort
Movie: Sulthan Rating: 2.25/5 Banner: Dream Warrior Pictures Cast: Karthi, Rashmika Mandanna, Napoleon, Lal, Yogi Babu, and others Music: Vivek Mervin Cinematography: Sathyan Sooryan Editor: Ruben Producers: SR Prakash Babu, SR Prabhu Direction: Bakkiyaraj Kannan Release Date: April 2, 2021
The successes of “Khaki” and “Khaidi” has made the Telugu audiences watch out for Karthi’s latest release again.
The trailer of “Sulthan” didn’t excite anyone but the presence of Rashmika Mandanna as the heroine has gained attention. Let’s analyze.
Story: Working as a Robotics Engineer in Mumbai, Sulthan (Karthi) leads a peaceful life, unlike his father (Napoleon), who is a gangster in Vizag. Sulthan is raised by Mansoor (Lal) and 100 rowdies.
After his father's death, Sulthan decides to reform his rowdy brothers and also decides to save a village's lands from being taken by a corporate company.
What obstacles he would face?
Artistes’ Performances: Karthi has played to the gallery. It is a typical mass role and a cakewalk for him. Rashmika Mandanna is completely wasted in the film.
Napolean as Karthi’s father and Lal as a foster-father have played their roles effectively. The two villains – Nawab Shah and KGF Ramachandra Raju have got to play weak roles. Yogi Babu’s comedy is okay.
Technical Excellence: The film is lavishly shot, but it doesn’t boast top-class technical output. Vivek Mervin’s songs are dull. None leave any impression.
Cinematographer Sathyan Suryan (Khaki and Khaidi) seems to have developed a penchant for filming action and chase scenes with vehicles in the night effect.
The film is lengthy, needs to be trimmed a lot, especially the portions in the second half. Dialogues are okay.
Highlights: The basic idea Interval bang Initial sequences
Drawback: Weak villains Boring romantic track The farming sequences post-interval
Analysis: Karthi’s ‘Sulthan’ is like watching two films on one ticket. The first half of the movie and the post-interval deal with two different conflicts and points. It begins like giving a new twist to mythology, which sounds quite interesting.
The hero is born and raised in a gangster’s family. His father has 100 henchmen who live by the sword. They raise Sulthan as their brother.
The first half then establishes it as a story of an alternative theme from Mahabharat. That is about what if Krishna stands with the 100 Kouravas and tries to reform them. The 100 Kouravas and Krishna reforming them sound exciting.
No wonder that despite the regular commercial format, the first half of the film holds interest. The masala moments in the first half, especially the pre-interval episode, are quite satisfying.
But in the second half, the gears are switched. It is then becoming a fight of a hero saving a village’s lands from a corporate villain who is planning to grab the lands for setting up an Iron ore factory. And suddenly, the hero comes up with the idea of making the rowdies into farmers to save the lands.
Soon, the story turns into overt masala khichdi – a fight for lands, the importance of farming, reforming the rowdies, and winning the love. Too many formulaic scenes are mixed in the second half.
Added to that, the villains, be it corporate guy (Nawab Shah), or village baddie (Ramachandra Raju), or one of the rowdies who is consumed by jealousy, are one-dimensional characters. After so much hullaballoo, the film’s resolution is too simplistic.
For Telugu audiences, it is quite boring as we have recently seen such themes – the importance of farming, corporate guys grabbing lands and hero fighting on behalf of villagers, etc.
On the whole, “Sulthan” begins on an interesting note, proposes some good mythological references but turns into a regular masala movie. It the end, it makes an uninteresting watch.
Bottom-line: Masala Kichdi

Sulthan – Review
‘ Sulthan ’ is the Tamil action film of Karthi and Rashmika Mandanna, written and directed by Bakkiyaraj Kannan and produced by the ‘Dream Warrior Pictures’. The background is scored by Yuvan Shankar Raja and the songs are composed by Vivek Mervin. Cinematography is by Sathyan Sooryan while editing of the movie is done by Ruben. Napoleon, Lal, Yogi Babu and Ramachandra Raju have played key roles in the movie.
The movie is about Sulthan (Karthi), who was born to Sethupathi (Napoleon), the gang leader, and brought up by a group of gangsters, the henchmen of Sethupathi. After the death of Sethupathi, it becomes the responsibility of Sulthan, to take care of these men. Sulthan, not only saves and protect them, but also tries to bring them to the right path, despite many difficulties. And when they happen to go to the remote village, some farmers seek their help to protect them and their land from a dangerous gang. Sulthan’s struggle in saving the village and reforming his men is the rest of the movie’s story.
The movie has much resemblance to the very popular Japanese film ‘Seven Samurai’ of 1954 and the Mahabharata, but the writing of Bakkiyaraj Kannan is so smart and engaging. There are many sub plots, but all of them add to the progress of the main story. The charming romantic track of Rashmika Mandanna and Karthi also is very significant in the storyline and is an enjoyable relief amidst the heavy scenes.
The character suits very well to Karthi and he has proved once again that he is a fine performer. He portrays his different sides as a lover boy and as the tough action hero, with great easiness. Rashmika is charming and has enough screen space. But the director could have taken little more care in establishing her character. Napoleon has done a dignified performance and Lal exhibits his excellent performance in his role of the foster father to Sulthan.
Yogi Babu entertains us with his good comedy and Sendrayan at some places.
The director deserves appreciation for portraying the henchmen as basically good at heart and can be reformed to a decent life, if guided properly. And the drawback of the director is in not properly establishing the characters, other than that of Karthi. Also the antagonists are under developed.
The songs of Vivek Mervin are good, but don’t blend with the narrative, whereas Yuvan’s background score supports the movie very well. The cinematography of Sathyan Sooryan also is effective and pleasant to watch.
The movie is a grand production and a good watch for commercial movie lovers.
Vidharth’s 25th movie is directed by Sreenivasan of ‘Annadurai’
