Programme description

This programme provides an opportunity for intensive advanced training in social psychology.

The staff involved in teaching and supervision include internationally recognised researchers from our Social Psychology group. Staff expertise covers a range of topics including perceptions of animals, sexism, collective action, romantic relationships, crowd behaviour, culture and identity, and use a variety of research methods to address their research interests (including both quantitative and qualitative approaches).

Programme structure

The programme comprises two semesters of taught core courses and an optional course, followed by a research dissertation conducted in close collaboration with an expert supervisor over the spring and summer months. In addition to topics specific to social psychology, the core courses cover advanced academic skills and research methodology, including research design, statistical modelling, and qualitative approaches. The optional course can be selected to tailor the programme to your interests. If you wish, you may choose the optional course from an associated area, such as individual differences, informatics, psycholinguistics, developmental or human cognitive neuroscience.

Career opportunities

The programme is relevant to students who 1) aspire to pursue a research-orientated career in social psychology, 2) are interested in undertaking a Professional Doctorate/Masters training programme in Clinical or Health Psychology, and/or 3) are interested in a wide variety of careers where it is valuable to be able to conduct sound social research, or to develop and evaluate practices and policies relating to social behaviour or thinking.

The programme teaches a broad range of transferable skills applicable to a wide range of modern jobs, such as research design, data management and processing, statistical modelling and interpretation, as well as the synthesis and communication of complex literatures.

Developmental Science Research in the Developmental Science group examines how different developmental factors interact across the lifespan, from before birth into adolescence and old age. The group comprises a diverse but well-integrated set of researchers, with expertise in cognitive, social and linguistic development, differential psychology and genetics, and computational modelling.

Human Cognitive Neuroscience This research group comprises academics with a diverse set of research interests spanning cognitive neuroscience.

Jenno Russo, MSU Clinical PhD Student, to Receive 2024 Outstanding Hall of Fame Student by the College of Arts & Sciences and Outstanding Graduate Student in Psychology

UNC-Chapel Hill graduate programs ranked among best in nation

U.S. News & World Report’s 2024 “Best Graduate Schools” list named multiple Carolina graduate degree programs in the top 10, including UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy at No. 1.

Numerous UNC-Chapel Hill graduate programs received high rankings – 20 were among the top 10 in the nation in their respective categories – as part of U.S. News & World Report’s “Best Graduate Schools” list.

For the third time in a row (2016, 2020 and 2024), UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy is the top pharmacy school in the U.S. The rankings are based on a survey of peers from accredited pharmacy schools across the country and are published every four years.

The Gillings School of Global Public Health was ranked second out of 213 schools and programs of public health in the U.S. for the seventh consecutive rankings period. The Gillings School has also maintained its position as the top public school of public health and has been ranked among the top schools and programs of public health by U.S. News since the magazine first ranked public health schools in 1987. U.S. News & World Report does not rank all graduate programs each year.

“Carolina’s graduate programs are exceptional, and it’s no surprise that our schools are ranked so highly among peer institutions by U.S. News and World Report, as well as other measures,” said UNC-Chapel Hill Interim Chancellor Lee H. Roberts. “Carolina is always proud to be recognized for our dedication to a world-class education. Every one of our graduate programs contributes to making us the leading public research university.”

Altogether, 23 programs increased their rankings, including multiple programs in the Gillings School of Global Public Health, School of Nursing, School of Education, Kenan-Flagler Business School and UNC School of Law.

“These rankings represent the hard work of our faculty, staff and students who are dedicated to moving Carolina forward through their incredible efforts each day,” said UNC-Chapel Hill Provost Chris Clemens. “It is gratifying to see this public recognition of their commitment to the mission of our graduate programs in research, teaching and public service. Even more than in the rankings, the proof of their work is the quality of our students and our passionate alumni who lead in so many fields.”

The School of Social Work moved up three spots in the latest rankings to a tie for fourth overall and is tied for second among public universities.

This year marks the first time since U.S. News & World Report began ranking law schools in 1987 that UNC School of Law has reached No. 20 out of 196 law schools. The UNC School of Law is also the seventh-ranked public law school.

Faculty at Center Stage: Dr. Drew Abney, Assistant Professor and Graduate Coordinator

Dr. Abney is an Assistant Professor in the Behavioral and Brain Sciences Program and serves as Graduate Coordinator for the Department of Psychology. Before joining the University of Georgia’s faculty in the fall of 2020, he earned a PhD in Cognitive and Information Sciences at the University of California, Merced, and completed a postdoctoral fellowship in Developmental Psychology at Indiana University. He currently teaches undergraduate and graduate courses on statistics, research design, and computer programming. He is the primary advisor to three graduate students and mentors 10-15 undergraduate research assistants each semester. 

As director of the Developmental Dynamics Lab , Dr. Abney explores a range of topics in human development, from how infants learn to communicate to how children learn to regulate their emotions, and how sleep impacts development. His innovative techniques for capturing and analyzing data have garnered him both recognition and support.

Dr. Abney’s research is currently funded by grants from the National Science Foundation, the Department of Defense, and the James S. McDonnell Foundation. He is the recipient of numerous awards, including the Rising Star research award from the Owens Institute for Behavioral Research, the Early Career Scholar award from the University of Georgia, and the department-wide Outstanding Teaching Award from the University of Georgia’s Department of Psychology.

Dr. Drew Abney is married to Dr. Rebecca Abney, a Soil Biogeochemist at UGA’s Warnell School of Forestry. They have an almost 2-year-old named Ailee, whose current favorite color is ‘lalyo’ (i.e., ‘yellow'), an Australian Shepard named Brinkley (aka: Mr. Brinkle Sprinkles), and a horse named Bombay. For fun, Drew likes trail running, avoiding venomous snakes while trail running, and checking out local music in Athens. Although he claims not to be very good at it, he also enjoys playing the banjo (Scruggs style).

Mechanical engineering alumnus developing materials to capture, reuse CO2

Carbon capture and storage (CCS) has become increasingly prominently in global policy discussions and media reports, and many experts regard CCS as an important component of efforts to address climate change.

University of Tulsa College of Engineering & Computer Science alumnus Matthew Crall (MS ’17, PhD ’19) is one of the scientists currently breaking new ground in CCS technology. Crall is a materials development engineer and charter member of Spiritus in Albuquerque, New Mexico. The company’s goal is to develop, build, and operate plants that capture CO2 from the air – also known as direct air capture (DAC) – and then sequester it underground.

“My efforts focus on engineering and testing new sorbent materials that capture CO2 and then release it on demand, so that the sorbent can be reused to capture more CO2 for thousands of cycles,” Crall explained. He also collaborates with Spiritus’ plant-design engineers to ensure the sorbent is compatible with their designs.

The main point of Crall’s DAC research is to help reduce the environmental impact of burning fossil fuels. “At Spiritus,” he noted, “we see DAC as a critical part of changing humanity’s stewardship of the global climate as companies and countries transition to greener energy solutions.”

Originally from Arkansas, Crall credits his graduate studies in TU’s Department of Mechanical Engineering as “absolutely amazing preparation for my career. I was pushed to be independent and creative, while the research opportunities I had were interesting, relevant, and challenging.” While he extols the support he received from all the department’s faculty, Crall regards his adviser, Professor Michael Keller , as “a truly exceptional mentor. From Day 1, there was constant discussion of the path I needed to be on to achieve my future goals.”

Prior to Spiritus, Crall’s path following graduation from TU took him to Los Alamos National Laboratory . There, he undertook three years of postdoctoral studies centered on materials development for national security applications. These included additively manufactured silicone materials, heat shields for re-entry vehicles, and ultra-high strength-to-weight ratio foams with unique microstructures.

Today, when he’s not busy tackling climate change through DAC innovations, Crall unwinds by running through the wide-open New Mexico countryside. And in somewhat less intense pursuits, he also enjoys hanging out with his miniature dachshund and playing music on his guitar.

How the University of Tennessee's graduate programs fared in 2024 national rankings

Graduate programs and schools at the University of Tennessee at Knoxville ranked highly in new rankings from U.S. News and World Report.

The organization released its " 2024-2025 Best Graduate Schools " report April 9, which ranks graduate programs and schools across public and private universities nationally. The report covers programs and schools in business, education and law. The rankings for engineering, medical and psychology will be updated later this year.

The top graduate program at UT is supply chain, which ranked fourth nationally. The Haslam College of Business tied for 47th for its full-time graduate programs.

The College of Social Work tied for 24th nationally, and the College of Law tied for 52nd nationally.

The College of Nursing doctoral program tied for 34th.

UT graduate programs ranked high among public universities

Narrowing down to just public universities, several programs and schools jumped in rankings.

Among public universities, the Haslam College of Business ranked 22nd for full-time graduate school programs and supply chain programs ranked third.

Additionally, the College of Social Work ranked 13th, the College of Nursing doctoral program ranked 24th and the College of Law ranked 26th among public universities.

Under the College of Law, legal clinical programs ranked eighth, business-corporate law ranked 13th, health care law ranked 21st and legal writing ranked 21st.

“The rankings this year provide evidence that UT has exceptional graduate programs across a wide range of disciplines,” dean of the Graduate School Dixie Thompson said in a press release. “These rankings are a reflection of the commitment to excellence made by our faculty, staff and students.”

Previous rankings for University of Tennessee graduate programs

UT has several programs ranked highly from previous years.

Printmaking programs are tied for UT's highest overall program ranking at fourth nationally.

Nuclear engineering at seventh. UT occupies the 10th spot for "Best Library and Information Studies Programs," along with school library media tied at 13th and digital librarianship tied at 14th. Under the law school, clinical training tied for 19th.

A few of UT's graduate schools are still ranked from previous years:

• College of Veterinary Medicine tied for 21st
• Physics (in the College of Arts and Sciences) tied for 55th
• Tickle College of Engineering tied for 55th

What is the U.S. News and World Report?

U.S. News and World Report is a media company well known for its "Best" rankings, including university rankings for prospective students. For the "Best Graduate Schools" rankings, the organization evaluates programs and schools in disciplines including business, education, engineering, law and nursing based on expert opinion and statistical data.

Research for these rankings began in fall 2023 through early 2024. The organization used surveys of 2,225 programs sent to approximately 5,766 academics and 10,941 professionals to rank the programs within the six main disciplines.

Correction: A previous version misstated which graduate programs and schools received new rankings at the University of Tennessee. UT's business, law and social work colleges and the nursing doctoral program had new rankings.

We maintain close links with other disciplines/subject areas within the University, such as psychology, linguistics, cognitive science, informatics, jurisprudence, politics, classics and the Science Studies Unit. Within Scotland, we have close ties with the philosophy departments of all the major universities, in particular those of St Andrews, Stirling, Glasgow and Aberdeen.
