How to Write the Tulane University Essay 2023-2024

Every year, Tulane attracts tens of thousands of applicants with its world-class academics in the heart of New Orleans—did we mention the school closes to celebrate Mardi Gras?! With so many applicants vying for a spot, you’ll need more than just good grades to get into Tulane. You’ll need to have strong essays as well.

That’s where we come in. In this post, we’ll go over our tips and strategies for writing the Tulane supplemental essay to help you write an essay that will boost your chances of admission.

Tulane University Supplemental Essay Prompt

“describe why you are interested in joining the tulane community. consider your experiences, talents, and values to illustrate what you would contribute to the tulane community if admitted. this statement should be 250 words at most; however, it is neither necessary nor expected that you reach this maximum length. we strongly encourage you to focus on content and efficiency rather than word count. while submitting this prompt is optional, we recommend that all applicants do so.” (250 words).

As the prompt states, this essay is technically optional, but chances are most applicants will be submitting an essay so you should too. After all, it’s only 250 words so it’s not terribly time-consuming, and it’s the only way for admissions officers to hear directly from you about your interest in Tulane.

The essay should follow a traditional “ Why This College? ” structure where you talk about your interests or goals and connect them to academic and extracurricular opportunities at Tulane.

It’s common for students to get lazy with essays like this and write general statements so they can copy and paste it for other colleges, but do not fall into that trap! In order to demonstrate your genuine interest and commitment to the school, your responses need to be unique to Tulane. Let’s look at some dos and don’ts of writing this essay.

DON’T: Talk About The Location, Weather, City, or Surrounding Area

We get it, New Orleans is a fantastic place to spend four years and it might play a role in your decision to apply to Tulane. However, your essay is not the place for you to communicate that. There are hundreds of schools in the Southeastern US with warm weather and there are other schools in New Orleans that give you access to the same city.

Think of your essay a bit like dating. You want to flatter the admissions committee and make them feel wanted—don’t make them feel like you are just choosing them for their location.

DO: Include Specific Resources That Align With Your Interests

There are two parts to this. The first is that the reasons you list for wanting to attend have to be specific and unique. If you are talking about a class you are excited to take, look through the course roster and find a class that speaks to you. Don’t pick Biology 101 or Introductory Microeconomics since you can find these at any college. Diversity of Animal Behavior and PR Event Planning however, are unique classes you should mention (these are not real Tulane courses by the way; this is just to show how specific you should get).

The second aspect of this piece of advice is to make sure the resources you mention relate to your chosen major or your interdisciplinary interests. For example, a student who is passionate about psychology should discuss her excitement in participating in behavioral neuroscience research with a distinguished professor. This aligns with her interest and would give her an opportunity to expand on why she is fascinated about the particular topic within psychology.

Yes, you might want to join club soccer or a painting club for fun, but for the sake of this essay, try to keep the majority of resources you focus on closer aligned to your core academic interests. Towards the end, you can and should share some opportunities you want to take advantage of to demonstrate you will be an active campus member, but you don’t need to spend too much space on that.

DON’T: List Out A Dozen Reasons You Are Drawn to Tulane

Along similar lines to the point above, the key is quality over quantity for this essay. Especially since you have limited space, try and limit the number of resources you mention to three to five. Focus on going in depth for each one by providing a personal connection; explain why you are drawn to the particular offering or what you hope to get out of it.

The more reasons you include, the less of an impact each one will have. There might be a lot you love about Tulane, but for the sake of being concise, narrow it down to your top picks.

DO: Include an Anecdote or Personal Details

While the main focus of this essay should be on why you are interested in attending Tulane and how you will be an active member on campus, this is also an opportunity for the admissions committee to learn about you. 

Your essay should be focused around a central theme—ideally related to your academic interests—so a great way to establish that theme off the bat is to open with an anecdote. Given the limited word count, your story can be short and sweet. Just by including a little imagery and some personal background about where you came from, what you are interested in, or what you value will make your essay more engaging and help the admissions committee get to know you better.

Remember, the anecdote as well as the Tulane resources you mention should be related in some way!

DON’T: Use Vague Emotional Appeals and Irrelevant Facts

As you’ve probably gathered by now, the key to a successful “Why This College?” essay is to be as specific as possible. Your essay should be composed of details about yourself and the school so it would only make sense as a brainchild of the two. 

It might be tempting to include phrases like “It felt like home” or “I can see myself fitting right in” but contrary to popular belief, these add nothing to the essay. You could feel at home at a dozen other schools. The admissions committee would much rather hear about the community you will build within the National Society of Black Engineers, for example, to find your home.

Also, don’t include fun facts you learned on a campus visit or brochure in your essay. The admissions committee are familiar with the annual Crawfest and know the famous alumni who walked the halls. By including details like these over ones that relate to you more personally, it signals to the admissions committee you didn’t spend a lot of time researching, and therefore you might not care as much about the school. 

DO: Describe What You Can Bring to the Campus

Many students are tempted to spend their entire essay praising the school, but don’t forget that you are a catch! Even if you feel like you don’t have much to offer to a world-renowned institution, just know there is so much you can bring to the campus.

Whether it’s your unique perspective from growing up in a different country, an instrument you love to play that you want to teach your roommates, a talent for journalism that you want to bring to the campus newspaper, or something else entirely, there are infinite ways for students to contribute to the community. 

This doesn’t have to be a large part of your essay, but sneak in a sentence or two about what you will bring and how you will enrich others with your presence and perspective.

With these tips in mind, you should be able to write a strong essay that is highly unique to both you and Tulane. At the end of the day, it’s up to you whether or not you answer this prompt, however we strongly encourage you to spend a few hours scouring Tulane’s website, and once you’ve done that, you will be equipped to write a stand-out essay in no time.

Although this prompt’s open floor plan may feel daunting, a good tactic is to first consider what has already been communicated within your Common App personal statement and activities list. What important aspect(s) of yourself have not been shared (or sufficiently discussed)?

You’ll then need to discuss how your experiences, talents, and/or values will influence your distinct contributions to Tulane’s community. Further, you’ll need to explain why you’re interested in joining that community in particular. We’d recommend being as specific as possible.

For example, given your visual arts background, perhaps you’re excited about contributing to and learning within Tulane’s thriving arts scene, including the NOLA Through Visual Culture interdisciplinary experience course and Tulane Art Club . Tulane lists four factors as being “very important” to the admissions committee: GPA, standardized test scores, class rank, and the rigor of your secondary school record. The Common App and supplemental essays are “important”.

Maybe you would like to be part of organizing a “Puppy Comfort” day during exams. Were you raised in a particular faith and plan to continue on your spiritual journey while at Tulane? Share 

There are plenty of options available to you, especially since the prompt is so broad. However, don’t think that your essay has to exactly 250 words in order to be a success. Everyone’s story is different, so when you feel you’ve reached an appropriate conclusion, be confident and end it there. The application states that the statement should be “250 words at most; however, it is neither necessary nor expected that you reach this maximum length. We strongly encourage you to focus on content and efficiency rather than word count.” So, 

Questions to consider

• What do I do in my spare time that brings out my best self?
• How do I hope to contribute to the campus community by making use of my specific talents?
• Are there any clubs or groups I plan to join?
• How has my family and community positively shaped who I am?

Final thoughts for students

When you start your essay, keep an open mind about different ways of writing. The usual formal writing you might’ve used in high school essays shouldn’t be used to answer these prompts. Instead, take on a conversational tone or become the narrator to your own story. The possibilities are endless and luckily, the essay is about you (who knows you better than you?).

This prompt offers you the opportunity to tell the admissions committee why you are interested in Tulane distinctly—what about Tulane is uniquely appealing to you as a prospective student? While submitting this prompt is optional, we recommend that all applicants do so.

In order to respond to this prompt, you will first need to conduct in-depth research on the university’s website, looking particularly at programs, initiatives, and opportunities that are highlighted as distinct Tulane offerings. Tulane’s admission page states: “Admission to Tulane is extremely competitive, and our admission counselors look for high levels of academic and extracurricular achievement; however, we’re building more than a class, we’re building a community. We review each applicant with an eye toward shaping Tulane and making it stronger and more vibrant each year, so it’s important that we look at each applicant as a whole.” Because of this emphasis on community and holistic consideration of prospective students, use the word count to cover multiple different aspects of Tulane’s academic and nonacademic offerings as well as how these offerings are compatible with your own multifaceted experiences and interests.

For instance, you might discuss the university’s research opportunities, the average class size of 20 students, or the public service project required as a part of Tulane’s undergraduate program. I was dumbfounded to learn from my high school environmental science teacher that our school had an environmentally unfriendly waste management program. We had separate bins for recycling plastic, but students used them wrong, and at the end of the day, it all went into the same landfill pile. Instead of frustration, I felt fascination. I knew from my AP Environmental class that recycling is a complex issue. I decided to try a solution: I printed bold, easy-to-read flyers explaining what goes in which bin and posted them in front of the school trash. With faculty support, I recruited a team of the students to come to school an hour early to get our hands dirty–literally–and we sorted the recycling. Through this experience, I felt the extreme pride and satisfaction that comes from combining my intellectual interest in Environmental Science with action-oriented initiatives for change.

At Tulane, I know I’ll be able to continue learning in an environment that prioritizes giving back. With incredible opportunities like the TIDES courses (this fall’s Climate Change Solutions is perfectly suited for my interests), I will be able to put my learning into making a tangible difference in the New Orleans area starting in my first semester. I’m also excited to take impactful, hands-on courses like “Urban Gardening” and “New Orleans Case Study.”

I believe with Tulane’s service-minded curriculum, I will continue using my passions to make a positive impact on my community.

Writing the why tulane essay (and the rest of the tulane supplement) | 2022-2023, school supplements.

 All prospective Tulane students submit a personal statement, but Tulane also offers two optional supplement essays—let’s nickname them “Why Tulane” and “Describe an activity.” These supplements give you the chance to show sides of yourself not highlighted in the rest of your application, and to further demonstrate that you belong at Tulane University. We (and Tulane’s own admissions officers) strongly recommend writing them!

Let’s take a look at how to approach these “Why Tulane” and “Describe an activity” essays.

Please describe why you are interested in attending Tulane University (optional). (500 words)

Why is it so important to respond to this prompt, so much so that it actually borders on being non-optional (assuming you really do want to go to Tulane)? Whereas other parts of your application may show what a promising college candidate you are in general, the “Why Tulane” essay lets you show specific aspects of Tulane that excite you and align with your passions and goals.

Here’s an exercise to generate ideas: Write down what you’d tell your good friend about why you love Tulane. (Doing plenty of research on Tulane definitely helps here!) You could even imagine some insightful questions your friend might ask you. (Friend: “Dude, how’s Tulane going to help you with your goal to combat climate change?” “Ah, great question, my dear friend! Actually, Tulane was named as one of the most sustainable colleges in the U.S. and hosts a Tulane Climate Action Week, and I plan to start a “Combat Climate Change” club that collaborates with Tulane’s Office of Sustainability.”)

By thinking about writing to a friend, you’ll be less tempted to say things you think an admissions officer wants to hear, and more likely to talk about things you’re truly “stoked” about! Paint a vivid picture for them of just how cool Tulane is and how it has so many resources that interest and excite you. If someone personally recommended Tulane to you, explain to your friend why you value this person’s recommendation.

Note: be wary of focusing too much on Tulane’s New Orleans location, unless you can relate it specifically to your academic or career goals. It’s more important to show that you are interested in the college itself.

After completing this exercise, you’ll have lots of material to use for your “Why Tulane” essay!

Please briefly elaborate on one of your extracurricular activities or work experiences. (250 words)

We recommend writing this “optional” Tulane supplement essay as well, because it’s a chance to show readers that you’ve engaged deeply with your extracurricular activities, and that these experiences have had a meaningful impact on your life.

But which activity or work experience should you pick?

Here’s an approach to try: First, think about everything you’re truly excited about doing at Tulane and in its surrounding areas. (Research on Tulane helps here, too!) For example, maybe you can’t wait to get involved in campus sustainability efforts. Now, list your extracurricular activities or work experiences—you might immediately home in on one that directly relates to your Tulane aspirations.

Let’s say you’re writing about your blueberry-picking job. Give only the key “technical details” of your daily duties; go into greater depth about any memorable interactions you had, lessons you learned, or realizations you gained. (For example: “Those early-morning hours working outside in nature made me realize I want to pursue a career that lets me study the natural world.”) Then look towards your future Tulane experience. (“That’s why at Tulane I hope to study X/join club Y/volunteer at Z in the Garden District...”) The overall focus of your response should be showing specifically why your chosen experience was so meaningful to you.

This year's batch of supplemental essay prompts was released on august 1st. here's what those prompts reveal about the changing priorities at colleges and universities..

Thanks to the perceived essay loophole Chief Justice Roberts’ Supreme Court decision language created—establishing that students can write about racial identity when tied to other experiences and characteristics—there has been much speculation that colleges would scramble to add diversity-related questions to their applications. Now that the Common App has reset for 2023-24, we can see colleges’ new supplemental questions. Did this bear out? So far, we’d say: yes. Yes it did. Here are a few overall trends and changes we’re noticing in the 2023-2024 supplemental essay prompts.

An increase in DEIB-related essays

This comes as no surprise. It’s important to note that many colleges already had prompts that asked students to reflect on their identities, on their communities, or on how they would contribute to diverse campuses; schools like Duke, Michigan, and Syracuse have included questions like this on their supplements for years now. But other schools have made notable changes since June’s decision: University of Miami, for example, replaced their question about the ibis (which, admittedly, we are not terribly sad to see go); American University scrapped their “why AU?”; and UVA retooled the essay questions they had only just retooled last year (even though UVA’s Dean J admitted she really liked last year’s version).

Here are the new versions of those schools’ supplemental essay questions:

University of Miami

“Located within one of the most dynamic cities in the world, the University of Miami is a distinctive community with a variety of cultures, traditions, histories, languages, and backgrounds. The University of Miami is a values-based and purpose-driven postsecondary institution that embraces diversity and inclusivity in all its forms and strives to create a culture of belonging, where every person feels valued and has an opportunity to contribute. Please describe how your unique experiences, challenges overcome, or skills acquired would contribute to our distinctive University community.” (max 250 words)

American University

“At American University, Inclusive Excellence is a cornerstone of the academic experience for our students, and we deeply value the learning that is inspired by the diversity of backgrounds and life experiences that all our community members bring with them. Please share why you would like to join this community.” (max 150 words)

All Applicants (300 words or less):

“What about your background, perspective, or experience will serve as a source of strength for you or those around you at UVA?”

More choice for students

Many colleges who have introduced new questions have included these questions as one of several choices. BU, for example, introduced a new question—“Reflect on a social or community issue that deeply resonates with you. Why is it important to you, and how have you been involved in addressing or raising awareness about it?”—but kept their classic “Why BU?” as an alternative option. Offering prompt choices—which schools like Tufts, Boston College, Villanova, Emory, and University of Richmond have done for quite some time—allows for students to write about their identities if they wish and on their own terms.

…Except at Harvard

As one of the defendants in the Supreme Court case, Harvard has lots of eyes on its post-SCOTUS decision making. Its response to the decision? Eliminating the previous optional (er, “optional”) essay and instituting five required essays. Very Harvard of them. And yes, one of them is directly about diversity:

“Harvard has long recognized the importance of enrolling a diverse student body. How will the life experiences that shape who you are today enable you to contribute to Harvard?”

Less emphasis on “why us?” essays

While this isn’t true everywhere, we saw a few surprising changes at some “why us?” stalwarts. Perhaps most notably, Tulane’s “why us?” essay—which, for many years, famously had an 800-word limit—is now a mere 250. And while last year Tulane had three different robust supplemental essay questions, now it’s just the one. Truly, our jaws are on the floor (yes, at this time of year, this counts as Very Exciting News. We essay editors don’t get out much in August). Equally shocking: no “why Indiana?” question for Indiana University in Bloomington. In fact, no supplement at all! That’s one way to lower the barrier to entry and boost application numbers (just ask Northeastern).

A Study of Belzutifan (MK-6482) in Combination With Lenvatinib Versus Cabozantinib for Treatment of Renal Cell Carcinoma (MK-6482-011)

This study will compare the efficacy and safety of belzutifan + lenvatinib versus cabozantinib in participants with advanced renal cell carcinoma (RCC) with clear cell component after prior therapy.

The primary hypothesis is that belzutifan + lenvatinib is superior to cabozantinib in terms of progression-free survival or overall survival.

Inclusion Criteria:

• Unresectable, locally advanced or metastatic clear cell renal cell carcinoma (RCC).
• Disease progression on or after an anti-programmed cell death-1/ligand 1 (PD-1/L1) therapy as either first or second-line treatment for locally advanced/metastatic RCC or as adjuvant treatment or neoadjuvant/adjuvant with progression on or within 6 months of last dose.
• Measurable disease per RECIST 1.1 criteria as assessed by local study investigator.
• Karnofsky performance status (KPS) score of at least 70% assessed within 10 days before randomization.
• Received no more than 2 prior systemic regimens including: one anti-PD-1/L1 containing adjuvant or neoadjuvant/adjuvant regimens with progression on or within 6 months from the last dose of that regimen OR one or 2 regimens for locoregional/advanced disease
• Received only 1 prior antiPD-1/L1 therapy for adjuvant, neoadjuvant/adjuvant or locally advanced/metastatic RCC.
• A male participant is eligible to participate if he is abstinent from heterosexual intercourse or agrees to use contraception during the intervention period and for at least 7 days after the last dose of belzutifan or lenvatinib in the belzutifan+lenvatinib arm, whichever occurs last, and 23 days after the last dose of cabozantinib.
• A female participant is eligible to participate if they are not pregnant, not breastfeeding, and at least 1 of the following conditions applies: Not a woman of childbearing potential (WOCBP) or a WOCBP who agrees to follow the contraceptive guidance during the intervention period and for at least 30 days after the last dose of study intervention in the belzutifan+ lenvatinib arm, or 120 days after the last dose of study intervention in the cabozantinib arm.
• Adequately controlled blood pressure.
• Adequate organ function.

Exclusion Criteria:

• A pulse oximeter reading <92% at rest, requires intermittent supplemental oxygen, or requires chronic supplemental oxygen.
• Known additional malignancy that is progressing or has required active treatment within the past 3 years except for basal cell carcinoma of the skin, squamous cell carcinoma of the skin, or carcinoma in situ (eg, breast carcinoma, cervical cancer in situ) that have undergone potentially curative therapy.
• Known central nervous system (CNS) metastases and/or carcinomatous meningitis.
• Clinically significant cardiac disease within 6 months of first dose of study intervention.
• Prolongation of QTc interval to >480 ms.
• Symptomatic pleural effusion (e.g.,cough, dyspnea, pleuritic chest pain) that is not clinically stable.
• Pre-existing ≥Grade 3 gastrointestinal or nongastrointestinal fistula.
• Moderate to severe hepatic impairment.
• History of significant bleeding within 3 months before randomization.
• History of solid organ transplantation.
• Known psychiatric or substance abuse disorder that would interfere with cooperation with the requirements of the study.
• Unable to swallow orally administered medication or has a gastrointestinal disorder affecting absorption (e.g., gastrectomy, partial bowel obstruction, malabsorption).
• Known hypersensitivity or allergy to the active pharmaceutical ingredients or any component of the study intervention formulations.
• Received colony-stimulating factors [eg, granulocyte colony-stimulating factor (G-CSF), granulocyte macrophage colony-stimulating factor (GMCSF) or recombinant erythropoietin (EPO)] within 28 days before randomization.
• Prior treatment with belzutifan or another hypoxia-inducible factor (HIF)-2α inhibitor.
• Prior treatment with lenvatinib.
• Prior treatment with cabozantinib.
• Currently participating in a study of an investigational agent or using an investigational device.
• Active infection requiring systemic therapy.
• History of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection.
• History of hepatitis B or known active hepatitis C infection.
