The 43 Best Bollywood Movies of All Time

Spoiler alert: There's a lot of Shah Rukh Khan.

Bollywood

Classic Bollywood Movies

Best bollywood drama movies, best romantic bollywood movies, best thriller and horror bollywood movies.

Named "Bollywood" by movie enthusiasts, the Hindi-language film industry accounts for a major portion of the global film space and continues to grow with each title it pumps out. Bollywood beats out Nigeria's Nollywood as well as America's Hollywood to be the world's largest film industry in terms of output and reach, with its content appealing to moviegoers in every corner of the world. But what is it exactly that makes Bollywood so epic, its films so special? Some argue that there's a tried-and-true formula to any quality Bollywood film: swoon-worthy romance, swelling soundtracks, ridiculously attractive lead characters, and plot twists that you can see coming from a mile away. Others say that Bollywood's secret is far simpler—it's just a damn good time from beginning to end.

Either way, these must-watch movies are well worth the two-plus hours you'll probably have to block off in your day to watch them (Bollywood movies are famously long). Whether you're a fan of romance, tragedy, or comedy, there's definitely a film for you in this colorful world. Below, a list of Bollywood staples that you  need  to add to your watch list ,  from epic historical dramas to kickass action movies.

'Mother India' (1957)

This epic drama focuses on an impoverished woman who is forced to care for her two sons alone while surviving threats from a nefarious money-lender when her husband leaves the family in disgrace. At the time it was made,  Mother India  was one of the most expensive Hindi movies ever made and is considered one of the most revered movies in Bollywood history.

Dil Chahta Hai (2001)

This movie has it all. It's a romantic comedy . It's a drama. It's a heartfelt coming-of-age movie.  Dil Chahta Hai , which won the National Film Award for Best Feature Film in Hindi, tells the stories of three college friends as they try to navigate life and love after graduation.

Sholay (1975)

This action-adventure Bollywood offering is a classic. The plot revolves around a retired police chief who sets out to catch a dastardly thief—with the help of two lesser criminals.

Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge  (1995)

You can't talk about Bollywood without mentioning  Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge . The 1995 classic is widely considered the gold standard for Bollywood rom-coms, featuring a cheeky Shah Rukh Khan and starlet Kajol (and her signature unibrow) as two young people who fall in love on a backpacking trip across Europe.

Pyaasa (1957)

This 1957 musical romance is a classic. The story follows Vijay, an unsuccessful poet who is mistakenly assumed dead when a homeless man he gave his coat to is murdered. After his "death," Vijay's poems are published—and wildly popular.

Mughal-e-Azam (1960)

Loosely based on actual historical events, Mughal-e-Azam tells the story of how 16th-century Mughal Emperor Akbar’s disapproval of his son Prince Salim’s choice of love interest turned into a full-blown war. The movie—which at the time boasted the highest budget of any Indian film by far—took its inspiration from a 1922 stage play and, in a full-circle moment, has since been turned into a Broadway-style musical that debuted in 2016 and toured North America this year.

Saina (2021)

We STAN an inspiring, goose-bump-inducing female-led sports flick. This biopic, starring Parineeti Chopra, dives into the life of Saina Nehwal an Indian professional badminton player who is a former world number 1.

Queen (2014)

When shy Rani Mehra gets left at the altar on her wedding day, she shocks her conservative family and friends by turning what was supposed to be a romantic honeymoon for two into an ambitious solo trip.

The Lunchbox (2013)

The Lunchbox  is one of those beautifully touching movies that tells a story you didn't know you desperately needed until you've seen it. In the movie, a woman named Ila tries to rekindle the spark in her marriage by preparing a special lunch for her (not-so-great) husband. The plan goes awry, however, and the lunch ends up in front of an antisocial widower instead. When her husband doesn't mention his special meal, Ila adds a note to the next lunch she prepares (which also goes to said widower) and an unlikely friendship is born.

3 Idiots (2019)

This coming-of-age dramedy follows three engineering students' trials and tribulations, offering a tongue-in-cheek critique of the state of the Indian education system and the stress it creates.

Lagaan (2001)

"Lagaan" translates to "Agricultural Tax," but don't let that put you off. Only within the genius that is Bollywood could a movie about a town outraged by an unprecedented tax increase also be this genuinely engrossing and earn an Oscar nom. It doesn't hurt that the villagers end up playing a game of cricket against the British army officers for the right  not  to pay it.

Panga (2020)

This inspirational sports movie takes place in the world of Kabbadi, a popular contact sport in India. The movie follows Jaya Nigam, a former Kabbadi champion who quit the sport after the birth of her son, but regrets walking away. With help and support from her now seven-year-old son and a former teammate, Jaya trains, gets back into shape, makes her comeback, and eventually wins the Kabaddi cup for team India.

Hichki (2018)

There's only been one thing challenging aspiring teacher Naina's dream of landing a job at the high school she once attended: her Tourette's syndrome. And even when Naina is able to finally become a teacher, her troublemaking class presents a new issue, making her wonder if her dreams really are within reach.

Insaf Ka Tarazu (1980)

Insaf Ka Tarazu  translates to "the balance (or scale) of justice" and the movie dives deep into what justice is and how to strike that balance. In this intense drama, a wealthy man named Ramesh meets a beauty queen named Bharti, who he invites onto his yacht. Afterwards, Bharti accuses Ramesh of sexually assaulting her, but he's exonerated. When he's murdered two years later, Bharti is arrested for the crime and put on trial herself.

The Dirty Picture (2013)

This musical drama, loosely based on the life of Silk Smitha, an Indian actress known for erotic roles, is equal parts bold and wildly entertaining. Actress Vidya Balan was critically praised for her work in the lead role.

Mary Kom (2014)

Priyanka Chopra stars in this inspirational sports film as the real-life boxing icon  Chungneijang Mary Kom Hmangte , who went from farming the fields of Manipur to fighting in the ring. Eventually, she became a six-time World Amateur Boxing champion.

Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham (2001)

What do you get when you take some of Bollywood's most prolific actors (Amitabh Bachchan, Shah Rukh Khan, Hrithik Roshan, Kajol, and Kareena Kapoor) and put them all in one movie about a well-off, prominent family in Delhi struggling to maintain its legacy?  Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham , that's what. The family drama is a heartbreaking story about the ties that bind us but can also break us. And it's so, so, so good.

Dangal (2016)

Nearly a decade after its release, Dangal remains India’s highest-grossing film of all time. The blockbuster biopic follows sisters Geeta and Babita Phogat, both wrestlers, on the road to the 2010 Commonwealth Games, where—historical spoiler alert!—Geeta would ultimately go on to become the first-ever Indian woman to win a gold medal for wrestling.

Secret Superstar (2017)

Part poignant coming-of-age story, part ode to a mother’s love, Secret Superstar is a certified tearjerker that shows 15-year-old Insia’s meteoric rise to fame as an anonymous YouTube sensation. With help from her mom, she’ll have to decide whether to follow her dreams or go along with her abusive father’s very different plan for her future.

Love Aaj Kal (2020)

It's appropriate that this romantic movie was released on Valentine's Day. The drama follows a young couple named Zoe and Veer who meet in a bar and have an instant connection but struggle to move forward in their relationship as their careers and life plans keep pulling them apart.

Main Prem Ki Diwani Hoon (2003)

A case of mistaken identity leads to love in this romantic comedy starring Bollywood heavyweights Hrthrik Roshan and Kareena Kapoor. (Note: Pay no attention to the animated talking parrot that shows up from time to time — 2003 was a whole different mood.)

Bajirao Mastani (2015)

When Peshwa Bajirao (Ranveer Singh) falls for Mastani (Deepika Padukone), the daughter of a Rajput king, despite already being married to Kashibai (Priyanka Chopra) an ill-fated love triangle forms altering the very course of their lives. Fun fact:  Bajirao Mastani  also   marks Singh and Padukone's second onscreen romance after starring together in  Ram Leela  in 2013; the two actors tied the knot IRL in 2018!

Devdas (2002)

Shah Rukh Khan (told you he'd appear on this list a lot) takes on the titular role of Devdas, a man who returns to India after previously leaving the country to study law in England. His forbidden love leads him to a battle with alcoholism that impacts the lives of the people who he loves most.

Veer-Zaara (2004)

This 2004 period drama tells the story of star-crossed lovers Veer, an Indian Air Force officer, and Zaara, the daughter of a Pakistani politician. Their 22-year love story is full of courage, sacrifice, and, of course, lots of edge-of-your-seat drama.

Barfi! (2012)

Ready to cry, laugh, and then cry a little more?  Barfi!  is about the misadventures of a happy-go-lucky man who makes the most of life. The film stars Bollywood favorites Ranbir Kapoor as Barfi and Priyanka Chopra as his love interest Jhilmil, a young woman on the autism spectrum.

Lust Stories (2018)

Much sexier than many of the other titles on this list and within Bollywood in general,  Lust Stories  is an anthology film about four vastly different sexual situations, including an inappropriate student-teacher interaction, a maid's secret desire, the broken trust between a married couple, and one woman's awkward experience with a vibrator. Stream the steamy film on  Netflix  today.

Jab We Met (2007)

If you love a good quirky-girls-saves-a-guy rom-com, then  Jab We Met  deserves a spot on your watchlist. The movie tells the story of heartbroken businessman Aditya who meets spirited woman Geet on a train and ends up sucked into her whirlwind of a life, including a trip to meet her family and the chance to tag along for her elopement with her secret boyfriend.

Khoobsurat (2014)

A career-driven but socially awkward physical therapist gets the opportunity of a lifetime when she's hired by the Rajasthan royal family to nurse the king back to health. However, she gets thrown off her game by the presence of the family's extremely hot prince and his snobbish mother. Romantic shenanigans and misunderstandings ensue, and honestly, what else would we expect from a Disney movie?

Jodhaa Akbar (2008)

Hrthrik Roshan and Aishwarya Rai lead this 2008 romance film about the marriage of convenience turned passionate love affair between a Rajput princess and a Mughal king that is jeopardized by the threat of a looming religious war.  Jodhaa Akbar  will make you believe in love again — trust me .

Kuch Kuch Hota Hai (1998)

Shah Rukh Khan makes the list again, this time for a ‘90s rom-com that features not one but two love triangles set about a decade apart. KKHH ’s own director has since criticized the gender politics at play in the film, but it remains a beloved entry in the Bollywood canon for its sweet story and unforgettable style.

Mrs. Serial Killer (2020)

If you like your crime dramas dark and twisty, then  Mrs. Serial Killer  is for you. The premise: A a man is arrested (and possibly framed) for a series of brutal murders. His pregnant wife decides to prove he's innocent by committing a copycat crime while he's in custody. Foolproof, right?

Fanaa (2006)

For a thriller with more romance, try 2006's  Fanaa , about a flirtatious tour guide named Rehan who meets and starts a relationship with a blind (but very independent) Kashmiri woman named Zooni. The twist: This isn't the first time Rehan and Zooni have met...or dated. Turns out, Rehan is an insurgent behind a series of terrorist attacks, including one seven years prior that he used to fake his own death and leave Zooni the first.

Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara (2011)

Lifelong best friends Imran, Arjun, and Kabir finally make good on their pact to travel to Spain, but interpersonal conflict threatens to upend their vacation and their friendship.

Haider (2014)

Haider  takes the well-known William Shakespeare play  Hamlet  and lets the tragedy play out in a totally different yet equally grim setting: in the middle of the Kashmir conflicts of 1995.

Ek Tha Tiger (2012)

Action icon Salman Khan plays an Indian secret agent nicknamed "Tiger" who is sent to Ireland on a mission to keep tabs on a renowned scientist suspected may be aiding the defense strategies of Pakistan.

Neerja (2016)

Model-turned-flight attendant Neerja Bhanot comes face to face with a group of terrorists intent on hijacking her flight. The film is based on the true story of the Abu Nidal Organization's hijacking of  Pan Am Flight 73  in 1986.

Dhoom 2 (2006)

In one of those rare cases where the sequel surpasses the original,  Dhoom 2  is believed by many to be the best film in the  Dhoom  franchise (which, by the way, is the second largest Bollywood film franchise in terms of box-office revenue). Think  Fast and Furious , but in Hindi and topped with lively musical numbers.

Ek Ladki Ko Dekha Toh Aisa Laga (2019)

LGTBQ narratives are slowly but surely making their way into mainstream Bollywood cinema, and  Ek Ladki Ko Dekha Toh Aisa Laga  is helping lead the way. The heartwarming film depicts a closeted woman's journey to personal freedom and her fight for acceptance from her traditional family.

Bodyguard (2011)

Lovely Singh is assigned to be the bodyguard for Divya, the beloved daughter of a national politician with many enemies, but things get complicated when Lovely finds himself falling in love on the job. There are cool fight sequences  and  fun dance breaks in this one — we love duality!

The White Tiger (2020)

Based on Aravind Adiga's  New York Times  bestselling book by the same name, this Netflix drama follows Balram (Adarsh Ghourav) a driver to a wealthy family, who is coerced into taking the fall for one of their crimes. Ultimately, the film, executive produced by Priyanka Chopra, grapples with the cycle of poverty, power, and self-preservation.

Is Love Enough? Sir (2018)

Get the tissues ready. Rohena Gera’s poignant and heartbreaking film examines complex love, class divides, and personal ambition. In the film, a young widow, hired as a housekeeper, and the wealthy, single man she works for fall in love.

Thapped (2020)

After her seemingly perfect husband Vikram (Pavail Gulati) slaps her at a party, Amrita (Taapsee Pannu) begins to realize all of the micro-sexism she's faced at his hands throughout their marriage. The movie follows her as she bravely takes on the patriarchy and fights for the respect she's owed.

Andhadhun (2018)

This suspense-filled black comedy is so filled with twists that “ending explained” is one of its most popular related Google searches. You won’t find any spoilers here: You’ll have to watch and decide for yourself what actually happened to Akash, Swami and Simi in the end—and whether Akash was ever really blind at all.

bollywood movie review in english

Now streaming on:

“Leo,” a formulaic but satisfying Indian remake of “ A History of Violence ,” both is and isn’t exactly what it looks like. You won’t be disappointed if you’re expecting a boisterous, bloody, and bass-heavy action musical about a coffee shop owner who must protect his wife and kids from a paranoid drug dealer who claims that our family man is actually a vicious ex-gangster. “Leo” is otherwise business as usual, especially if you see it for Tamil-language speaking star Vijay, as many opening day ticketholders already have .

Vijay’s last few action movies have also served as overstuffed showcases for the chipmunk-cheeked leading man. Vijay (“Beast,” “Varisu”), a former child actor, still doesn’t have much range, but he doesn’t really need to. He’s an action star, and he looks good whenever he’s dispatching scads of heavies with his feet, fists, and various mallets and blades. (Action choreographer/stunt coordinator duo Abumani and Arivumani are credited with planning the movie’s “Action” under their “Anbariv” stage name.)

Vijay looks less at ease whenever he tries to make a multidimensional character out of cafe owner/animal rescuer Parthiban, though his discomfort only adds tension to his character’s identity crisis. Reteaming with “Master” writer/director Lokesh Kanagaraj , Vijay once again asserts his all-utility qualifications: he can wrestle a computer-generated hyena into submission, lead a warehouse full of extras in a (mostly fine) dance number, and even punch drug dealer Antony Das ( Sanjay Dutt ) through the air and into a Land Rover.

Vijay’s drive to affect any mood, style, or pose isn’t unusual for such a popular and charismatic marquee topper. Still, it is striking to see Vijay, still eternally youthful despite his fastidiously stylized beard’s skunk streaks, play a character who protests this much whenever he’s confronted with his killer reputation. There’s even an anthemic song that, in a couple of scenes, suggests that “Mr. Leo Das is a badass.” So, who does Vijay think he’s fooling?

Parthiban, thankfully, doesn’t need to be believable as anything other than a pretext for melodramatic fireworks. In character, Vijay appears convincing enough as a stern but loving dad to pouty pre-teen Mathi (Iyal) and polite adolescent Siddharth ( Mathew Thomas ), as well as a doting but paternal husband to Sathya (Trisha). Some incidental details suggest that, in the town of Theog, Parthiban has a reputation as “an ordinary person, yeah, just a peace lovin’ soul,” as one song goes. Vijay’s still more convincing when he’s inexplicably—but efficiently!—dispatching wave after wave of violent baddies, all of whom either assume Parthiban’s actually Leo Das, Antony’s estranged son, or simply have no clue who they’re dealing with.

A good part of what makes “Leo” so charming is that it’s already so familiar, both for its something-for-everyone mood swings and its pulpy stock plot. There’s no satirical edge here, not like there was in the movie version of “A History of Violence.” But that’s to be expected in a vehicle for a star who, when his character tries to win over his young daughter, dances to the strains of “Thanmani Pookkun” from Tamil icon Prabhu’s 1995 romantic drama “Pasumpon.” In another scene, we hear relatively modern movie music from the 2005 Vijay crime drama “Thirupaachi,” which further hints at “Leo”’s cinematic lineage.

If you already know Vijay, you probably also know what he’s capable of. He reminds us in “Leo” during fight scenes, most of which are composed and cut as dynamically as they are choreographed. Vijay also lightly tests viewers’ expectations whenever Parthiban laments or protests that he couldn’t possibly be Leo. Don’t listen to that song, no matter how many times it’s played: how could you ever doubt that face?

As with many action stars, Vijay’s presence creates its own reality-defying standards of normalcy. In a voiceover aside, he suggests that he (Parthiban) must believe in himself first to be more convincing to everyone else. That’s the nature of this type of movie, whose baggy pacing might still test the patience of anyone who just wants to watch Vijay stab a hyena and maybe also gawk at Sanjay Dutt, I mean Antony Das, as he sacrifices a goat at his Satanic-looking shrine, complete with a pentacle and giant bird of prey statue. Anything can be normal if you’re already invested.

Vijay’s performance is sometimes a little too strained, especially when Parthiban/Leo’s emotional outbursts have to bring a scene to a new level of emotional intensity. Then again, nonchalance doesn’t suit Vijay. He seems to care too much even when he, in character, casually blows away a few more non-descript baddies. If you’re watching “Leo,” it should be to see Vijay show off in between animal attacks, car flips, and celebrity cameos. And even if you don’t expect much from “Leo,” it still might give you exactly what you need.

‘Brazen propaganda’: pro-Modi films flood Bollywood before India election

Some releases promote the PM and his policies while others are accused of being divisive and Islamophobic

They are films that claim to tell the “real story” of India’s history, taking aim at the evils of “leftists” and “intellectuals” and even the freedom fighter Mahatma Gandhi.

As Narendra Modi and his Bharatiya Janata party (BJP) seek a third term in next month’s election, a feverish pro-government momentum has gripped Bollywood, blurring the lines between entertainment and political campaigning in India’s largest film industry.

Almost a dozen new films promoting the prime minister and his government’s Hindu nationalist policies and ideology have been released or will come out at cinemas in coming days and weeks. The election, which will determine the direction of the country for the next five years, begins on 19 April and will run for six weeks.

Film critics and analysts have accused several titles of pushing Islamophobic narratives and debunked anti-Muslim conspiracies, and targeting “urban naxals” – a derogatory term some Hindu rightwingers use to describe leftwing activists and intellectuals. Some in the industry have raised concerns that these films will be used to further divide India along religious lines.

One film produced by a BJP MP is so incendiary in its portrayal of Muslims that it has faced court action to try to prevent its release.

The flurry of pro-government films is reminiscent of the build-up to the 2019 election, when a biopic of Modi was deemed to be so positive about the prime minister that the election commission halted its release before the polls.

Sayandeb Chowdhury, a professor of literature at Chennai’s Krea University who has written on Indian cinema, described the films as “brazen propaganda which are deliberately creating wounds and fault lines to serve the government’s political agenda”.

He pointed out that Modi and other government officials had directly referenced many of the films in their speeches. “Cinema has become a form of political mobilisation,” he said.

One of the prominent titles about to hit Indian cinemas is a biopic of Vinayak Damodar Savarkar , a divisive Hindu nationalist leader and activist Modi has lauded and who fought against British rule. His writings, however, promote violence against Muslims and express sympathy for the Nazis and Italian fascists.

Article 370, released last month, is an unabashed celebration of Modi’s decision to strip Kashmir, the majority-Muslim region, of its statehood, portraying him as a decisive figure saving India from violence and corruption. Modi praised the film while critics called it “factually incorrect”.

A poster for the film Article 370 at a cinema in Guwahati.

Another film takes aim at Jawaharlal Nehru University, an institution known as a hub of leftwing thought and activism. The film, Jahangir National University, which comes out in April, tells the story of a campus where “leftists waging love jihad” – a debunked conspiracy against Muslims – and “urban naxals are trying to divide the country”.

Chowdhury said the releases spoke to a larger trend in Bollywood in which the film industry had been aggressively co-opted over the decade of Modi’s rule, , despite historically remaining apolitical.

He lamented that Bollywood, which had long united people across India’s vast religious and cultural differences, was being weaponised to sow discord, to great effect. “If cinema itself becomes a tool of division, one of India’s more cherished unifying symbols is in danger of being lost forever,” he said.

While films propagating the BJP’s narrative are being released with increasing regularity, streaming platforms such as Netflix and Amazon have faced legal threats and had series and films removed for being seen to be critical of the government.

Chowdhury said the turning point had been the 2022 release of The Kashmir Files, which claimed it would tell the real story of the expulsion of Hindus from the region. Despite its negative portrayal of Muslims and accusations that it was a polarising distortion of history, it was the biggest blockbuster hit of the year.

It has prompted a number of similar films claiming to portray history, largely involving the demonisation of Muslims, which have been seen as part of a wider BJP project to rewrite the narrative of India’s past.

The most recent release is Razakar: Silent Genocide of Hyderabad, which was accused in a court filing of being Islamophobic for its distorted portrayal of a Muslim leader. Similar to the Kashmir Files, the producer has claimed the film is “100% accurate” with no commercial embellishments.

Raja Sen, a film critic and Bollywood screenwriter, told the Associated Press that many filmmakers were jumping on the bandwagon, realising the potential for major box office success of polarising films that generate public discussion. “The scary part is that these films are being accepted now,” Sen said. “It is truly frightening.”

As India's election nears, some Bollywood films promote Modi politics by embracing Hindu nationalism

A cluster of Bollywood films based on polarizing issues that promote Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his government’s Hindu nationalist agenda are coming out

NEW DELHI -- The movie trailer begins with an outline of the iconic glasses worn by Mohandas Gandhi, the leader who helped India win independence from the British colonialists in 1947. In the backdrop of a devotional song that Gandhi loved, the outline slowly morphs into what appears like his face.

Then, a raucous beat drops, followed by a rap song. A face is finally revealed: not Gandhi, but an actor who plays the independence leader’s ideological nemesis, Vinayak Damodar Savarkar — the man considered the fountainhead of Hindu nationalism in India.

It is the same ideology Prime Minister Narendra Modi has harnessed to cement his power as his ruling party makes strides in its quest to turn the secular country into a Hindu nation.

The glorified biopic on the early 20th-century Hindu nationalist ideologue — called “Swatantra Veer Savarkar,” or “Independent Warrior Savarkar” — hits Indian theatres Friday, just weeks ahead of a national vote that is set to determine the political direction of the country for the next five years. The movie coincides with a cluster of upcoming Bollywood releases based on polarizing issues, which either promote Modi and his government’s political agenda, or lambast his critics.

Analysts say the use of popular cinema as a campaign tool to promote Hindu nationalism feeds into a divisive narrative that risks exacerbating the already widespread political and religious rifts in the country.

Raja Sen, a film critic and Bollywood screenwriter, said movies used to represent a mix of nationalistic cinema and films promoting national integration.

"That appears to be fast changing,” Sen said. “The scary part is that these films are being accepted now. It is truly frightening.”

For more than a century, Bollywood has unified India, a country riven with religious, caste and political divide. It's been a rare industry where religion has been least influential in deciding the success of filmmakers and actors. Bollywood films have also championed political diversity and religious harmony.

That culture, however, appears to be under threat.

Under Modi’s Hindu nationalist government, many filmmakers have made movies on bygone Hindu kings extolling their bravery. Boisterous and action-packed movies valorizing the Indian Army have become box office successes. Political dramas and biopics that eulogize Hindu nationalists are the norm.

In most of these films, the stock villains are medieval Muslim rulers, leftist or opposition leaders, free thinkers or rights activists — and neighboring Pakistan, India’s arch rival.

The biopic on Sarvarkar, who advocated for India’s future as a Hindu nation, is emblematic of this broader trend.

Two more upcoming films claim to reveal a conspiracy about a 2002 train fire in western Gujarat state that ignited one of the worst anti-Muslim riots in India. More than 1,000 people, mostly Muslims, were killed in riots. It was a hugely controversial episode in Modi’s political career, as he was the chief minister of Gujarat at the time.

Another film claims to expose the "anti-national agenda” of a university in the capital, New Delhi. The film is loosely based on Jawaharlal Nehru University, one of the country’s premier liberal institutions that has become a target of Hindu nationalists and leaders from Modi’s Bharatiya Janata Party.

Many past films with similar themes became box office successes. Modi’s party often publicly endorsed them despite criticism of his government for stifling dissent.

In February, Modi himself praised “Article 370,” a film that celebrated his government’s controversial decision to strip Indian-controlled Kashmir of its special status and statehood in 2019. Some film reviewers called the movie “factually incorrect” and a “thinly veiled propaganda film” favoring the government.

“The Kerala Story," the ninth-highest grossing Hindi film of 2023, was widely panned for inaccuracies in depicting Christian and Hindu girls from India’s southern Kerala state who were lured to join the Islamic State. The film was banned in two states ruled by opposition parties, who said it was Islamophobic and would destroy religious harmony.

At the same time, at least three states ruled by Modi’s party made tickets to see the film tax-free and held mass screenings. Modi himself endorsed viewing the film during a state election rally.

Sudipto Sen, the film’s director, said the movie exposed the "nexus between religious fundamentalism and terrorism” through a human story, and did not vilify Muslims.

“You can’t ignore the emotional appeal of these films. In fact, every state government should endorse them,” Sen said.

Another of Sen’s films, based on Maoist insurgency in central Indian jungles, was released March 15. Its primary villains, apart from the insurgents, were rights activists and left-leaning intellectuals. One critic called it “two hours of diatribe against communism.”

While such films have been applauded by India's right, other Bollywood movies have fallen into the crosshairs of Hindu nationalists.

Right-wing groups have frequently threatened to block the release of films they deem offensive to Hinduism. Hindu activists often make calls on social media to boycott such films.

Some filmmakers caught up in India’s increasingly restrictive political environment say they're resorting to self-censorship.

“People like me feel disempowered,” said Onir, a National Award-winning filmmaker who goes by just one name.

Onir has made widely acclaimed films highlighting LGBTQ+ rights. In 2022, Onir wanted to make a movie inspired by a former Indian army major who falls in love with a local man in disputed Kashmir, where armed rebels seeking independence or a merger with Pakistan have fought Indian rule for decades. The film’s script was rejected by India’s defense ministry because it was “distorting the image of Indian army,” the filmmaker said.

“Look at the films that are getting released now. Any film that goes against the government’s narrative is called anti-national. There is no fair ground. In fact, there is an atmosphere of fear,” Onir said.

Polarizing films — which Onir noted constitute most of the recent releases, while movies focusing on discrimination against minorities face hurdles — tend to make big money, signaling the appetite for such content.

Some say the rise in divisive films reflects opportunism among filmmakers.

“The idea that this is the way to success has permeated into Bollywood,” said Raja Sen, the critic and screenwriter.

He said such films make good business sense because of the noise they generate, even though they serve as the cinematic equivalent of "WhatsApp forwards" — a reference to misinformation and propaganda spread on the social messaging platform.

“Indian films need an artistic rebellion. I hope we can start seeing that,” Sen said.

Bollywood ‘takeover’: Pro-Modi films swamp Indian voters ahead of election

At least 10 releases before the election amplify Modi’s political agenda and vilify critics and opponents – sparing not even Mahatma Gandhi.

Mumbai, India – A grimacing police official, staring into the camera, declares her intent to publicly shoot dead “leftists” while attacking “left-liberal, pseudo-intellectuals” as well as students of Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU), a left-leaning university space in the cross-hairs of the Modi government.

Men in skull caps, the visuals intercut with bloody violence, declare that Rohingya Muslims will soon displace Hindus and make for half of India’s population, while a harrowed Hindu woman fighting against these men says she wants to meet Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

A biopic on the early 20th century Hindu nationalist ideologue Vinayak Damodar Savarkar has a voiceover that insists that India would have freed itself of British colonial rule over three decades before it did, if not for Mahatma Gandhi.

These are scenes from upcoming Hindi films slated for release over the next few weeks.

As India’s nearly one billion voters get ready to pick their national government in general elections between March and May, Modi and his ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) are receiving campaign support from an atypical ally: cinema.

A slew of new films, timed with the elections and often helmed by major production houses, are relying on storylines that overtly either promote Modi and his government’s policies or target rival politicians. Not even national icons like Gandhi or top universities like JNU are spared – the institution has long been a left-leaning bastion of liberal education, often antagonistic to the BJP’s Hindu majoritarianism.

Many of these stories peddle Islamophobic conspiracies commonly circulated among Hindu right-wing networks that are aligned with the BJP’s political agenda. At least 10 such films have either been released recently or are poised to hit theatres and television in this election season

“This is part of a larger attempt to ‘take over’ the Hindi film industry, just as other forms of popular culture have been infiltrated,” said Ira Bhaskar, a retired professor of cinema studies at JNU who also served as a member of the country’s censor board until 2015. Bhaskar was referring to the growing Hindu nationalist narratives found in pop culture forms like music, poetry and books.

The latest films include biopics that glorify the controversial legacies of Hindu majoritarian heroes and BJP leaders. Savarkar, a controversial anti-colonial Hindu nationalist, advocated rape against Muslim women as a form of retribution for historical wrongs.

Two of the upcoming films, Accident or Conspiracy: Godhra, and The Sabarmati Report, claim to “reveal” the “real story” behind the Godhra train burning of 2002 where 59 Hindu pilgrims died in a fire that was the spark for anti-Muslim riots orchestrated by Hindu right-wing groups that claimed over 1,000 lives, mostly Muslims. The riots happened when Modi was the state’s chief minister.

Another film, Aakhir Palaayan Kab Tak? (Until when will we need to flee?), shows a Hindu “exodus” purportedly due to Muslims. Then there’s Razakar, a multilingual release on what it calls the “silent genocide” of Hindus in Hyderabad by Razakars, a paramilitary volunteer force that inflicted mass violence before and after India’s independence in 1947. The film has been produced by a BJP leader.

In late February, Modi himself praised Article 370, a newly released film that lauds his government’s contentious decision to strip Indian-administered Jammu and Kashmir of its special status and statehood while placing hundreds under house arrests and imposing lockdowns in the region. Film reviewers have called the movie a “puff piece” and a “thinly veiled propaganda film” in favour of the Modi government while treating its critics and opposition leaders with “derision”.

Bhaskar said the new films were “clear propaganda, no doubt about it”.

A growing trend

The surge in such movies builds on a pattern also seen before the 2019 elections when Modi returned to power for a second time. On the eve of that vote, a clutch of films tried to bolster the BJP’s popularity.

Some tried to take down the ruling party’s critics, like the Accidental Prime Minister (PM), a searing take on Modi’s predecessor, Manmohan Singh. Others stoked jingoism, like Uri: The Surgical Strike, which recreated the military strikes that Indian forces made inside Pakistan-controlled Kashmir in retaliation against a terror attack on an Indian military camp in Kashmir’s Uri region in September 2016. The film ended with a scene of a pleased-looking Modi-resembling prime minister. Both films were released in the same week, days before the elections.

But Bhaskar said that while the trend isn’t new, it has grown since 2014, when Modi came to power, starting off with the changed way that the Indian film industry dealt with historical representations.

“Over the last few years, we have seen a shift in the representation of Muslim rulers who are all, now, portrayed as barbarians and temple-destroyers,” Bhaskar said. “This was also propaganda, though in a not-so-direct way, where the message was: Muslims don’t belong to India, they were invaders.”

These positions align with the Hindu right-wing ecosystem’s publicly-stated aims of  purging Mughal history from public consciousness.

Such films, in the past, have faced allegations of amplifying social divisions and hate speech. Screenings of films like The Kashmir Files , depicting the Kashmiri Pandit exodus of the 1990s, often saw audiences, at the end of the film, rising up and calling for violence against Muslims and advocating their boycott.

Another film, The Kerala Story , panned widely for inaccuracies in depicting an alleged ISIL/ISIS conspiracy to lure Christian and Hindu girls to join the group, played a part in igniting societal tensions among communities, leading to violence in the western Indian region of Akola in Maharashtra.

Fear and opportunism

Film industry insiders attribute this new genre of films to a mix of unease, opportunism and a helpful nudge from the establishment.

A number of industry insiders this writer contacted refused to speak on record, for fear of retribution.

Bollywood, in the recent few years, has frequently been a victim of high-decibel campaigns, often endorsed by BJP leaders – from boycotting films to calling for bans on them. Hindu right-wing groups have often targeted films and shows for broadcasting “anti-Hindu” content.

In 2021, BJP leaders had called for the arrest of the director and officials of the Amazon Prime streaming service over a web show Tandav because it had scenes that protesters allege were defamatory towards Hindu gods. Police complaints, calling for their arrest, were filed in six different cities before the country’s top court stayed them.

Many insiders said these instances had produced a “chilling effect” on other creators. “Often, ideas get nixed or get altered at the pre-production stage itself, because makers are now constantly censoring themselves and anticipating the trouble that the content might court in the current political climate,” said a film producer, requesting anonymity.

Others, however, believe that these films are not just a result of such fear but also a tinge of opportunism. A Mumbai-based director, who had been approached to make a film that aligned with a pro-Hindu majoritarian agenda, said makers often get enticed to “cash in” on the current political atmosphere. “With the success of a few such films in the past, many filmmakers are now tempted to try and appease the ruling ideology in the hope that they also find commercial success,” the director said.

Others echoed this sentiment. Speaking to Al Jazeera, a popular Hindi film actor revealed how a streaming service drastically altered a show he was part of, based on the life of a historical character, to portray the character to be a Hindu legend taking on Muslim invaders. “The streaming service thought that such ‘repositioning’ of the character would make it a good sell,” the actor said. The show, the actor said, did “decently well” among rural audiences.

And when movies pander to the ruling party’s ideology, they often receive a leg up from the government. In the past, contentious films like The Kashmir Files and The Kerala Story have been rewarded by BJP governments – taxes were waived off. BJP units also organised free screenings of these films, helping them get wider audiences. Modi has publicly praised both these films, thereby granting them greater legitimacy and insisted that films should be made on the state of emergency imposed by Prime Minister Indira Gandhi in 1975 – during which several fundamental rights were suspended – as well as on the Partition of India in 1947.

Al Jazeera sought comments from Sudipto Sen, the director of The Kerala Story. Sen said he would respond but had not done so by the time of publication.

Others, like National Award-winning filmmaker R Balakrishnan, however, believe that the rise of such films reflects a demand for such content from the audience. “Suddenly, people are interested in incidents that they don’t know about. There is an interest in political films and historical films based on incidents,” he said.

The danger, he added, was that this curiosity was being “subverted” since filmmakers were not researching their subjects adequately. “When you make a political film on an event or incident, the onus lies on the filmmaker to do the research and make it accurate. If you use films to subvert the truth and use it for other purposes, then you are depriving people of knowledge of what really happened there,” he said.

Here to stay?

Balakrishnan, the director, said that such “weak films” would stay limited to a few filmmakers. “Some are trying to ride a wave, but this won’t become a mainstream phenomenon. After all, the audience does not want to watch political films every day.”

Others, however, point to a newer trend – that of mainstream films, starring A-listers, also serving propaganda purposes. Fighter, a film released in January, with top actors Hrithik Roshan and Deepika Padukone starring in it, had a character playing PM Modi mouthing bombastic lines, insisting that it was time to show Pakistan who the “boss” was, before deciding to launch air strikes against the neighbour in 2019.

Bhaskar, the retired JNU professor, said this was a sign that the trend was only going to deepen.  “This is no longer episodic, or tied to any events like the polls any more,” Bhaskar said. If anything, she added, the scale of such films is now going to grow. “You will now see big-banner, big-budget films being made to serve propaganda purposes.”

Film Review of 3 Idiots For Students Class 11, 12

Film Review of 3 Idiots For Students

Description of the 3 idiots film.

The 3 Idiots is a 2009 Indian comedy-drama film directed by Rajkumar Hirani. It has managed to secure a position in the top Bollywood movie list. It is one of the best motivational blockbuster films in the history of Bollywood. The 3 Idiots film has become the highest-grossing opening-day collection film. It has also become the highest opening weekend collection film in India’s history of Bollywood films. It is one of the first Indian films that earn Rs 200 Crores net at the box office. Finally, it earned Rs 395 crores globally.

The most famous Indian actor Aamir Khan played the leading role in the film 3 Idiots. Apart from Aamir Khan, R. Madhavan, Sharman Joshi, Kareena Kapoor, Boman Irani, and Omi Vaidya acted in the lead roles. They are also very familiar faces in the Bollywood world. The 3 Idiots film is directed by Rajkumar Hirani and Produced by Vidhu Vinod Chopra. The film director offered Actor Shah Rukh Khan the character of Rancho. He declined the offer citing date issues, and the role went to Aamir Khan .

The three essential roles of the 3 Idiots film are Aamir Khan as Rancchoddas “Rancho” Shyamaldas Chanchad or Phunsukh Wangdu, R. Madhavan as Farhan Qureshi, Sharman Joshi as Raju Rastogi. They studied engineering at the Imperial College of Engineering and shared a room in a hostel. Apart from them, the additional stars are Kareena Kapoor as Pia, Omi Vaidya as Chatur Ramalingam (Silencer), Boman Irani as Viru Sahastrebuddhe (Virus), Parikshit Sahni as Mr. Qureshi,  and Mona Singh as Mona Sahastrebuddhe (pia’s sister).

The Imperial College of Engineering is one of India’s best colleges for engineering studies. Rancho got admission as a rich man’s son in India, while Farhan and Raju are from an average family. Farhan dreamed of being a wildlife photographer, but his father insisted he study engineering because it had his wish. Indeed, Rancho was the son of a gardener.

Raju has come to study to uplift his family’s fortunes because he is from an impoverished family. Rancho’s passion is earning knowledge rather than the conventional obsession of the other students with exam ranks. With his different approach, Rancho suffers the wrath of the dean of the college, Professor Viru Sahastrabudhhe (ViruS) (Boman Irani). Rancho terms the dean as ViruS.

He irritates his lecturers by giving creative and unique answers. Joy was also a student of the Imperial College of Engineering. She had requested the dean to extend his major project on the compassionate grounds that his father had suffered a stroke. But, Virus refused, saying he was utterly unmoved by his son’s accidental death after being hit by a train. Rancho condemns the learning system of the institution, blaming it for Lobo’s death.

Threatened by Rancho’s talent and free spirit, ViruS labels him an “idiot,” and he attempts to destroy his friendship with Raju and Farhan. In contrast, (Omi Vaidya) Chatur Ramalingam, or “Silencer,” is the model student in the eyes of ViruS, who always wants to get high marks through memorizing rather than understanding.

Finally, Rancho comes first, and he was awarded ViruS’s pen that he had been keeping for a few decades to gift to the most brilliant student.

3 Idiots Film Review- Opinions

The 3 Idiots Bollywood film is a great film to motivate students. It has come up with an excellent message for university students. Three Idiots film teaches us to be more creative rather than only memorizing books. Every student should watch this film to understand better how to study well at University without remembering books.

The 3 Idiots film will help differentiate between the students who like to memorize only without understanding and those who want to understand topics rather than memorize. The audience will get a clear concept of the duties and responsibilities of a successful student. I immensely enjoyed this film for its fantastic story, casting, dialogue, and music.

Strengths of the 3 Idiots Film

This film teaches us that we should focus on what we like to do and stop doing what people suggest doing us, just like Farhan. From a personal or professional perspective, calm and motivate yourself when you face difficulties or critical situations. It results in positive things in our lives. We should not be just confined to bookish Knowledge. Only getting higher ranks won’t help you succeed, but you will surely succeed if you get excellent at your work.

Don’t run behind the success; achieve excellence first; the success will automatically come looking for you. Be always creative in your answers, work, & things, which helps you become more capable of your own life.

Believing in our own is very much important. If you want to achieve something, you must think you can fully achieve it. It will surely get easier to achieve your goal. If you’re going to succeed, you can’t just race with others; instead, you will have to think more advanced than them, more significantly, and more efficiently.

Based on the 348,000 responses in IMBD,  the 3 Idiots film obtained a rating of 8.4/10.

Weaknesses of the 3 Idiots Film

This film has many pranking scenes, such as pranking teachers and mocking professors. Moreover, the prank with Chatur was too terrible; it could tear up any student’s self-confidence and push them towards depression. There are a few scenes where students drink alcohol, which badly impacts students’ psychology and questions the engineering college system. Students are died of suicide instead of solving problems.

Additionally, in this film, the audience can see the delivery of a baby with a suction pipe, giving exams after times up, and just fleeing quickly by mixing their papers with other papers.

We think the filmmakers haven’t done enough research on baby delivery. Otherwise, they would have known that the placenta was also delivered after the baby’s delivery. Doctors can find such mistakes in the film.

The leading role in this film is Aamir Khan, who did not struggle enough to achieve success. But it is a fact that struggle and handwork are inevitable for success.

Additionally, the writer Chetan Bhagat claimed that the story of the 3 Idiots film has taken from his novel “Five Point Someone.” This controversy came up just after released the movie. However, Rajkumar Hirani explained that he had taken permission from Chetan Bhagat while writing the script.

3 Idiots Film Evaluation with Evidence

Based on the evidence, it is safe to say that this is one of the most successful films in Bollywood history. The 3 Idiots film earned around US$90 million, making it the highest-grossing Bollywood film. Additionally, the film has won six Filmfare Awards, including Best Film, and three National Film Awards. It has won overseas awards, such as Japan’s Videoyasan Awards Grand Prize. Further, the 3 Idiots film has been nominated for Best Outstanding Foreign Language Film at the Japan Academy Awards and Best Foreign Film at China’s Beijing International Film Festival. The 3 Idiot film was a hit in China, and they were even interested in remaking it.

Lessons from the 3 Idiots Film

Raju: I have learned to stand up on my feet after breaking my legs.

Rancho: Follow your passion. Don’t study something you know you are not interested in or are bad at.

Rancho: Learning is not memorizing the exact words from the textbook. Learning means understanding the topic and describing it in your own words with your ideas.

Recommendations to Watch 3 Idiots Film

I want to recommend people to watch this motivational film. Firstly, It is a family-friendly film. So, all family members, from the eldest to the youngest, can sit together to watch this film. There is no intimate sexual scene except a kissing scene. In addition, this film story is appropriate to student life so that students will enjoy it very much. Students can get motivation from this film to study well. Finally, it is a motivational film and gives positive thoughts to acquire success in life.
