But ironically, this specificity becomes problematic if you go to the cinema after watching the trailer—the nearly two-hour-long movie offers you nothing more than what you have seen in the four-minute advertisement. The development of climax and denouement seems formulaic; it is predictable and rarely surprises you.

Overall, hence, Aama is another average project. While it offers you a spellbinding story with an excellent directorship, the movie cannot quench the Nepali cinema industry’s long-awaited thirst for originality and ‘newness’.

 ‘Single-handed’ movie

Because it is a family story and family values play decisive roles in anyone’s life in the Nepali society, the movie easily appeals to the Nepali audience in general. Dipendra K Khanal has written an emotionally charged story incorporating three subplots that are closely interconnected. The three subplots deal with different issues of the Nepali society: from the growing exodus of the young population to the foreign land, leaving the life of old people miserable in the villages, to the woes of ‘infertile’ couples. Yet, they connect to one theme: the parent-child relationship.

Khanal seems so cautious not to ruin the vigour of his story that he has not only directed the movie, but he has held the cinematographer’s job also with himself. Apparently, his single-handedness has paid off. The camerawork is almost flawless. Many things, for example, the couple (Surakshya Panta and Manish Niraula)’s desire for a child, are told with the use of images, without saying it in words. Separate shots and scenes have been connected well. Transitions are effectively marked. For the sake of clarity, flashback scenes have not been used.

Despite having three subplots, which could have been developed into separate standalone stories, the movie communicates well. Khanal, as the writer and the director, deserves applause for this.

Realistic acting and presentation

More importantly, the characters are built well in the movie. Though the title character is apparently played by veteran Mithila Sharma, Panta is the lead in this movie. Panta has done an excellent job; she looks natural in her emotionally-turbulent role. This project has elevated her one step up in her career. Sharma’s acting is also impressive, but the character she acts is quite flat that she is not required to show any dynamism and versatility. The same condition applies to the role played by Sarita Giri. The story allows both Sharma and Giri to smile very rarely. Though in a negative role, veteran radio drama actor Laxmi Bhusal has done her job well.

Because Khanal has introduced comparatively a few characters in the story, he has not lost his control over their portrayal. As Nepali movie critics often say, some ‘star’ actors work on their own frequently depriving the director of his/her command over the movie. However, Khanal has successfully handled the issue. Even the minor characters, such as the roles played by Aashant Sharma, Saroj Aryal and Asmita Khanal are built well.

But there are some glitches. Consider two scenes as examples. When Aarati (Panta) shouts at some doctors at the first hospital the family visits to admit her dad (Desh Bhakta Khanal), the audience feels it is too early to make Panta angry. Perhaps, the director could have delayed the expression of anger. Then, in the second half, Aarati’s unnamed mother (Mithila Sharma) speaks to the ailing husband (Khanal) without waiting for his response, and her speech about how the couple raised their children in the past lasts for more than one minute. Here, the director has forgotten that his job is to show, not tell.

It seems the director deliberately wants to keep all men of the film under the women’s shadow. Not only that Khanal has been silenced, the character of Aarati’s husband, played by Manish Niraula, is also underdeveloped in the movie. His angry shouts at the wife seem made-up. While he is also a major character of the story and the way he acts out significantly affects the overall performance of the movie, Niraula’s training is below par in comparison to the performance of Surakshya Panta or Mithila Sharma.

Predictable story

Perhaps the bigger problem than the training of the actors is the story’s predictability. While the four-minute trial sums up everything that happens in the movie, a few elements of the film also enable the viewers to guess what they are expecting next. Consider, for example, the use of rainfall as a motif. Stereotypically, rainfall suggests some imminent challenges to the protagonists. As the curtains open, an ambulance is plying a serpentine road while it is raining cats and dogs. Showing the rainfall once or twice could have made the movie interesting and symbolically rich, but the audience of Aama fails to count how many times it rains after the opening scene.

So happens with Aarati’s mother’s efforts to check the time on her husband’s watch. However, the use of roasted corn as a symbol is appropriate; it tells a lot about the family’s shattered dreams.

Of course, there are a few things that the trailer does not show you clearly; for example, a Christian man’s efforts to convert people at the hospital and the hospital’s fraudulent activities. However, they do not add anything significant to the plot.

Khanal’s 2016 blockbuster Pashupati Prasad fared well in the box office because its story was unique and particular. The movie had dealt with the incidents that general people had rarely thought about. However, his latest project does not have such unique elements, except that a lady shaves her head for her parents’ funeral. That too has turned stale with its excessive exposure on the film’s posters.

Perhaps, Khanal is aware of these shortcomings; hence he has been using the name and fame of Pashupati Prasad to promote Aama. When he delivers his next project after a few years, Khanal will still need to use the Pashupati Prasad-fame to advertise that. Though emotionally appealing, Aama does not offer him anything sellable to him and anything ‘new’ to the audience.

Homework to release on May 20

KATHMANDU: Playing a 65-year-old father as well as a young son, actor Aaryan Sigdel will be seen in double avatar in his next film. And the film is Homework which has been directed by Nirak Poudel. The film will hit cinema halls on May 20, which was announced at a press meet held at Baajeko Sekuwa, Battisputali, on May 3.

“I had read a news three-and-half years ago about an old man who appeared for SLC examinations. An idea struck me and I was inspired by this idea to make a movie,” director Poudel shared about his inspiration of the film at the press meet.

He took the idea further and Homework was made. “I wanted to show his experience, circumstances and what he would feel while going to school with children,” he added.

At the event, he also clarified the rumours of the film being inspired by any other movies. “It is original,”he claimed.

Sigdel, who plays the character of elderly Hari Krishna Sharma as well as young Aaryaman in the film, expressed, “It would take three to four hours to apply the make-up to transform myself into the old man’s character and again I had to prepare to look like the young man. It was tough job in winter but recalling it now is joyful.”

Other cast include actress Namrata Shrestha, Gauri Malla, and TV personality G P Timilsina.

Nepali movie ‘Jhola’ is a movie made on a popular book by the same name by literary figure, Krishna Dharabasi. The plot set on the Nepali society of the time about a century ago. The movie directed by Yadav Kumar Bhattarai features  Garima Pant , Desh Bhakta Khanal, Deepak Chhetri,  Laxmi Giri , Pralhad Khatiwada in main roles. The movie made on the banner of Media for Culture Pvt. Ltd. was made after an extensive research on the topic for about 7 years. Based on the novel, Late Deepak Alok had written the script of the movie – keeping the core of the book intact. The movie can be categorized as a historical art movie.

The movie presents the height of violence against women in ancient Nepal – Sati tradition. In ‘Jhola’ an young woman (Garima Pant) is married to a man 40 years senior to her. When her husband dies, Garima is kept to be burned alive with the dead body of her husband. She escaped the fire and hides in a cave. You can watch the movie to know what happens to Garima and how her small son helps her.

STRENGTH AND WEAKNESS

Although there are places for improvement, the scenes in the movie seem realistic and historical. The movie depicts the environment of East Nepal at the time of 100 years ago. The movie uses long shot to present realistic views of the time. The movie features traditional tools like dhiki, janto, madani, ranko, diyalo and so on.

The young people could get a glimpse of our past and the old people can feel the time they have went through in their childhood. So, both young and the old can enjoy the movie. In addition to Sati tradition, the movie also touches slavery (Kamara Kamari) tradition.

The cinematography is one of the best aspect of the movie. The director has also taken care to present the ancient environment. Most of the lighting during the shooting were also made by traditional lights like ranko, diyalo and fire place light. The dress used by the characters were also sewn by hand.  Background music was also composed of leaf music and traditional tunes. The director says that none of the artists have done make up. To make the characters natural, they had carried cow dung, dug in fields, carried water and the natural dirt was used to make the characters real.

Garima Pant and the child artist have done a very realistic acting. Other actors have also justified their character. In a report, Garima got sick after the shooting of the scene in which she runs away by swimming in the river. Garima told that throughout the shooting she didn’t take a bath or applied makeup.

The director Yadav Bhattarai is a well known name in directing Nepali music videos. After directing about 900 music videos Yadav decided to make the movie on the story he read some 11 years ago. He read the book in BS 2059 and got the permission to make movie on it in BS 2063 from Dharabasi. The script writer Deepak Alok had died four years prior to the release of the movie.

‘Jhola’ is a historical movie to get a glimpse of the time of our fore fathers. The movie is a mirror of violence against women in ancient time. Apart from the entertainment, the movie offers insights into history, culture and tradition. ‘Jhola’ has it’s share of shortcomings but, it is a good historical movie. If you like fight, singing and dance, and fun in movies – this might not be the one you would love to watch.

Film Review – Shatru Gate (Should I watch Shatru Gate?)

Movie – Shatru Gate Starring – Madan Krishna Shrestha, Hari Bamsha Acharya, Deepak Raj Giri, Deepa Shree Niraula, Priyanka Karki, Paul Shah, Aanchal Sharma etc. Director – Pradeep Bhattarai

The movie was considered one of the most awaited movies in the Nepali film industry because of at least, the following three reasons:

• Comeback movie of MaHa. They had returned in the Nepali film industry after about 17 years.
• Directed by the director of ‘Jatra’ another hit film.
• Script by Deepak Raj Giri, the writer of successful comedy films like ‘Chha Ekan Chha’, ‘Woda Number Chha’, Chhakka Panja’ and ‘Chhakka Panja 2’.

Apart from them, the fans of Paul, Aanchal, and Priyanka were also eagerly awaiting the film’s release.  As expected, the opening of the film was good. But, there is a risk of over-expectation.

What is ‘Shatru Gate’?

Shatru Gate is a comedy film – with a lot of comedy artists. The family movie features a lot of comedy scenes, serious love story and a collection of funny events. The movie has become special in terms of the star-cast in it. MaHa-duo, Deepak and Deepa and Paul Aanchal are three successful and well known two-member teams in the Nepali film industry. Although Paul and Aanchal association is relatively new, other two have proved themselves in the entertainment industry from their numerous ups and downs.

Kri review, despite negative reviews, I think, film will be superhit

As expected, Anmol KC’s movie ‘Kri’ was houseful everywhere. But, the response were not consistent. While some of the viewers have appreciated Anmol KC’s effort in the movie, others have criticized the movie as being very bad. It seems, a lot of viewers had much higher expectation from the movie.

The film makers had anticipated such response. So, they had released a half-backed song few days before the release of the movie. The film critics have rated the movie very low. For example, Gokarna Gautam of Nepal magazine has rated it 1.5/5. The review is titled “A stale story of revenge”

Summary of what Gokarna said:

• Anmol KC is bad at acting (That’s not a new ‘compliment’)
• In the past, Anmol was limited into lover-boy character, now he is seen in an action avatar.
• Script and directorial aspect of the movie is totally dependent on Anmol KC, like is previous movies. (And, they all were successful.)
• The technical aspect of the movie is exceptional.

After reading the reviews and negative reviews in Twitter, I am confident, ‘Kri’ will be a hit movie.

One of the most awaited Nepali movies ‘Loot 2’ was released on this Friday, February 24, 2016 (Read ‘Loot 2’ Release news ). The success of the original ‘Loot’ had increased the expectations and desire in the viewers. That is the reason, most of the prospective viewers ask, “Is ‘Loot 2’ as good as ‘Loot’?” The answer to the question is not easy. Some think it is better than the original but, others think that it is not. Everybody agree that the movie entertaining and it could have been made better. There were less number of viewers when compared to previous years. We lost a lot of visitors after the earthquake on April 25.The following ranking is obtained from 60 lakh pageviews xnepali received in 2015.

‘Woda Number Chha’ Plot

The movie is set in Ward No. 6 in an unspecified village of Nuwakot. It is the story of five guys of Jhulebasti. The lives of the five guys is fun filled until one of the guys like the daughter of their master, Sushila. Then, Maoist insurgency also enters in the story-line. The movie however is not centered in Maoist war and doesn’t decide on whether the war was wrong or right. It only shows how and who benefited from the war.

Dying Candle, Nibhna Lageko Diyo, an introduction

A friend in Twitter asked if I had heard of the movie ‘Dyning Candle’ or ‘Nibhna Lageko Diyo’ in Nepali language. I hadn’t. But, I did a quick search and loved the trailer available in IMDB website (trailer is embedded at the end). The movie set in a remote location seems to be the story of a loving sister and her varied emotions towards her brother and others. I am writing about all the stuffs I could gather from the trailer and the information available online. There is no definitive release date of the movie as the post production and re-shooting seem to be going on.

The movie ‘Dying Candle’ is written and directed by Naresh Kumar KC. The original screenplay was 145 pages at the time of the start shooting. But, first 88 pages completed the movie although the ending was an unplanned one. The crew lived in the remote village for 45 days to complete the shooting. Every food item except potato had to be imported from Kathmandu. So the crew had mostly to live on potato throughout the shooting.

Tathastu Plot

Nepali film ‘Tathastu’ is about Basanti who is abused by her husband. The film about domestic violence and marital rape is a story of a typical Nepali woman abused by her husband. Basanti’s husband, Kamal, is an influential political figure. Kamal sexually abuses Basanti before marriage and it continues after the marriage. When things become intolerable, Basanti fakes death and runs away to her village.

When Kamal knew that Basanti is alive, he brings her back. The movie ‘Tathastu’ is about the fight of Bananti against her abusing husband.

Movie Review – Shree 5 Ambare

‘Shree 5 Ambare’ is a movie featuring Saugat Malla , Keki Adhikari , Bikram Singh, Priyanka Karki and Yama Buddha in main roles. The movie is directed by ‘Antaral’ famed director, Dipa Basnet and produced under her own home production, Jibansathi Films. The movie features the cinematography of Ganesh Kumar Shrestha, story of Abhimanyo Nirabi, editing of Chandan Dutt and concept and casting by Jibansathi Basnet.

The movie was released on November 21 with another movie ‘Humjayega’.

The story of the movie is about the life of street children – commonly known as ‘khate’ kids. The life in street is not fun but, Ambar (Saugat Malla) and Kali (Keki Adhikari) meet and fell in love in their childhood on street. Ambar is left along in the street when Kali is taken away by a guy. She became a prostitute and lived a comfortable life while Ambar nourished his desire to become a king in the society.

Movie Review – Humjayega

A comedy movie ‘Humjayega’ was released in theater on November 21 with another movie ‘Shree 5 Ambare’. The movie features popular comedian Wilson Bikram Rai , Baboo Bogati , Parbati Rai , Reecha Dhital, Rabi Giri , Shyam Rai and Prajwal Giri in main roles. The movie directed by Surendr Pun is made under Munal Films banner.

The title of the movie was borrowed from the popular comedian of Darjeeling, Dal Bahadur Gurung ( Humjayega.com ). Dal Bahadur Gurung, a driver by profession, was called ‘Humjayega’ as he was willing to go anywhere to help people. But, the movie is not about Dal Bahadur but, of a similar person who would do anything to help others.

Hum Jayega (Baboo Bogati) is an unemployed person who is quite frustrated for not getting a job. In a small hotel, another person, an owner of a bus, was complaining about a bus driver who didn’t show up. On the recommendation of the hotel owner, Humjayega got the job of a local bus driver. Humjayega meets a beautiful girl, Kanchi (Reecha Dhital), and falls in love. The movie is about the bus driver and how he tries to woo the girl.

Movie Review – Jerryy

This week’s new release ‘Jerryy’ has gained a good traction in attracting the viewers in the theater. The movie shows a lot of potential of Bhuwan KC ‘s son Anmol KC . The movie features Anmol KC, Anna Sharma, Amalia Sharma and Abhishek Man Sherchan in lead roles. The movie directed by the ‘Hostel’ ( watch ‘Hostel’ here ) director Hemraj BC is produced under Falcon Pictures banner.

The movie presents a story of a youth Xavier Rana, played by Anmol KC, from a rich family. For simplicity, he is popularly known as Jerryy. A lot of girls are attracted to Jerryy and he is sort of a playboy who enjoys life in every opportunity he gets. He tries not to get engaged in any particular girl for long until he meets Akanchha, played by Anna Sharma.

Lazza – Movie Review

A Chhabiraj Films production, Nepali movie ‘Lazza’, is a female oriented movie by the writer, director Nawal Nepal . The movie released on October 24, 2014 features actors Shilpa Pokharel and Aryan Sigdel in lead roles. Supporting actors include Mithila Sharma and Kiran KC . The movie produced by Jidendra Shakya has music of Chetan Sapkota, choreography of Kabiraj Gahatraj, and editing of Ananta Thapaliya.

The movie is a story of the lead character Priya (played by Shilpa Pokharel). When Daya (played by Aryan Sigdel) saw Priya, she was his love at first sight. Daya’s attempt to find more about Priya went in vain until he accidently meets Priya’s mom (played by Mithila Sharma ).

Himmatwali, movie review

The directorial debut of actress Rekha Thapa and debut of disabled actor Sudarshan Gautam as an actor, ‘ Himmatwali ‘ was released on Fulpati, at the time of the biggest festival of Nepal, Dashain.

The movie is produced by Rekha’s mother Saraswati Thapa and is released under Rekha Films banner. The movie features Rekha Thapa and Sudarshan Gautam in lead roles. Other actors include Abhaya Chand and Puskar Bhatta. The movie features the action of Chandra Pant, music of Basanta Sapkota and Tanka Budhathoki, cinematography of Ramsharan Upreti and choreography of Basanta Shrestha and Kamal Rai.

Controversy

The release on Wednesday, against the usual practice of releasing new Nepali movie on Fridays, created a lot of controversies . Rekha ignored the government order. As a result Rekha and her production company Rekha Films were suspended from the Film Producers Association.

Kabaddi – Movie Review

A dark comedy, Nepali movie ‘Kabaddi’ is a movie by Ram Babu Gurung featuring Dayahang Rai , Nischal Basnet , and Rishma Gurung in lead roles. Other actors in the movie include Rajan Khatiwada, Bijay Baral, and Buddhi Tamang. The presentation of Black Horse Pictures, the movie is made on the story, screenplay and the direction of Ram Babu Gurung. Cinematographer Purushottam Pradhan has shot the movie, Govinda Rai was the choreographer and Neelima Sharma had designed the costume. The movie is jointly produced by Nischal Basnet and Sunil Chand Rauniyar.

‘Kabaddi’ is a story of Bir Kaji (Dayahang Rai) who lives in a village named Naurikot. Most of the young guys of Naurikot have already left for foreign employments and most of those who are left are also planning to leave the place. Kaji in contrast is aimless in such terms. All he wants is to get married to his maternal cousin Maiya (Rishma Gurung). Maiya however runs away from every romantic advances of Kaji. Kaji’s friends (played by Bijaya Baral and Buddhi Tamang) back Kaji in every tactics he applies to get Maiya’s approval.
