'Paappan': A gripping crime investigation thriller

Princy Alexander

Joshiy's 'Paappan' starring Suresh Gopi and Gokul Suresh hit theatres on Friday. The movie is a crime investigation thriller revolving around a cold-blooded murderer, whose targets are all men.

Everyone familiar with Joshiy's style of movie-making would know how he likes to bring emotions alive onscreen, especially while catering to a family audience. In 'Paappan', too this worked, though a little more subtly. Even as the crimes take place and the motives unfold, the focus is more on the emotional journey of some of the main characters.

Leading the investigation is a smartly-dressed woman police officer Vincy Mathew, played by Neeta Pillai. The investigation gathers steam when her father, Abraham Mathew Mathan (Suresh Gopi) a retired police officer, is brought into the picture.

Ponniyin Selvan 1 review: Aishwarya Rai, Jayam Ravi shine brighter in this Mani Ratnam movie

Is he the key to the criminal or is he hiding something else? The movie unfolds from there.

What's different about the script is the pattern of the murders that are committed.

There is no scope for predictions and the audience is kept on their toes continuously. The suspense continues till the end of the story.

The plot is refreshing and has attempted to break away from cliches that exist in the type of crime stories Mollywood has churned out before. Watching a capable woman police officer helm an investigation is quite a delight to watch. She is quick to admonish police officers who do not respect women, which is a reminder of the kind of empowerment women have achieved.

It feels good to see Suresh Gopi, who has been doing only a handful of movies these day, back in an investigation thriller. However, the man who had once delivered some of his greatest hits as a police officer in Joshiy's movies, is more restrained in this film. Those expecting to see the superstar deliver some power-packed dialogues and action scenes may be disappointed to see the star being relegated to the background. But that is how the story evolves.

The makers also have to be credited for not being swayed by the superstardom status of the actor and giving him a chance to explore his sentimental side.

There are several elements in the first of the movie which is quite praise-worthy and story writer RJ Shaan has to be credited for a convincing roadmap to the plot. There is no dull moment in the movie as twist after twist unfolds.

While the second half is almost as good, it becomes quite evident that the makers seemed to have been a bit clueless on the path to bring down the curtains.

Though Gokul Suresh does not have many dialogues in the movie, the chemistry between the father and son, is quite nice to watch onscreen. Asha Sharath, as a forensic expert, delivers a flawless performance.

All the other actors, including Vijayaraghavan, Kaniha and Nyla Usha have also done justice to their roles. The music by Jakes Bejoy complements the movie's moods.

Review | Paappan: Few neat touches in largely exhausting film

Paappan poster

In an ideal Suresh Gopi cop thriller, the superstar would be a dominant presence throughout—unless, of course, he is playing a cameo in another superstar’s thriller. There are times when Paappan feels like a Suresh Gopi movie and times when it doesn’t. It mostly leans towards the latter. However, it does feel like a Joshiy movie, albeit a lesser one.

Paappan is closer in spirit to one of my favourite Joshiy thrillers, Ee Thanutha Veluppan Kalathu (ETVK). In that film, Mammootty played the investigating officer, and Suresh Gopi was a suspect. At one point in Paappan, Suresh Gopi’s seasoned policeman has to deal with a suspect who goes through a similar situation as his character did in ETVK. The ETVK-Paappan similarities don’t end there, but going further might give away crucial plot points.

One of the 90s-set flashback events in Paappan—and one can see why Joshiy was apt for the material—is not too different from that of another iconic Suresh Gopi cop, Bharatchandran. Like its eponymous antihero, Paappan often feels like a relic from a different era and suffers as a result. What’s strange is how Joshiy, who got naturalistic performances out of actors in another contemporary film of his set entirely in the 90s, Porinju Mariam Jose, has now made a movie with Malayalam television-friendly performances. It’s the main reason why the film, despite some clever twists, becomes a strenuous experience. Does the story justify the 170-min runtime? Yes, but there’s a catch: enduring every patience-testing development preceding those twists.

I’m not saying that all of Paappan is a bore. We get some neat touches, like having Vincy (Neeta Pillai), the estranged police daughter of Paappan, headline the investigation. You might ask if Paappan is not involved in the same. He is, but his is more of a ‘background’ investigation, the details of which are only gradually revealed. Having a young female investigator in charge is refreshing for a filmmaker who made a career out of largely male-dominated thrillers.

This means Paappan behaves more like a secondary character even though the film is named after him and even opens with him. The other interesting touch is seeing Suresh Gopi as a mellowed-down figure. This is not the same man who used to bombard the bad guys with fiery, at times expletive-laced, monologues in those Shaji Kailas or Joshiy classics. This is a man who is still grappling with a past tragedy. This is a man who regrets putting his duty over family. This is a man whose daughter looks at her father the same way Karthika looked at Kamal Haasan in Nayakan. He also gets us curious: Is this a man motivated by vengeance? Or is this a man who knows that he shouldn’t let his past tragedy get in the way of true sleuth work? Is he capable of being dispassionate?

I also liked how the after-effects of past events have repercussions on the present. It takes you through multiple murders, twists and turns, most of which serve as effective—to a certain extent—red herrings. The film opens with a murder where the victim turns out to be someone unexpected. The murder pattern resembles something that occurred decades ago. There is a killer from a past who also happens to be a killer with a past. The same killer has attached to his mother ala Norman Bates from Alfred Hitchcock’s Psycho. When similar murders occur again, the suspicion naturally falls on one individual. Did he really do it? Or was it someone else?

There was one twist, in particular, I found refreshing. I felt the film would’ve worked much more had the makers concluded everything with it instead of introducing an additional element for intensity-amping. It’s not only a classic case of too many cooks spoiling the broth but also of hammy, unintentionally comical performances diluting the impact of the proceedings.

Suresh Gopi does the seasoned cop act quite decently. But everyone else behaves as though they have been instructed to perform like teleserial actors. Most of the lines are downright cringe-inducing and jarring. At one point, a character tells his wife, “When there is ‘we too’, why should you worry about Me Too?” Such lines, appearing in the very early portions of the film, get you more concerned about the remainder of the film’s duration. There is a nagging worry about dealing with more lines like this in the rest of the film. I also felt Neeta Pillai— who was brilliant in Abrid Shine’s Poomaram and Kung Fu Master—was an ill-fit for Vincy because she didn’t seem comfortable, evident in the straining manner she emotes whenever burdened by heavy emotions.

We don’t get to see anything inventive in terms of the storytelling/filmmaking approach either. Once again, we get the much-familiar zooms and frame rate manipulations we have seen numerous times before. The familiarity is also a problem with respect to the visuals (teal-and-orange lighting) and Jakes Bejoy’s repetitively deja vu-inducing score. At a time when we have seen superior investigative thrillers from all over the world, Paappan feels quite outdated.

Film: Paappan director: Joshiy Cast: Suresh Gopi, Neeta Pillai, Vijayaraghavan, Nyla Usha, Gokul Suresh Rating: 2/5

Paappan

Paappan review: Suresh Gopi-Joshiy combo stays ahead of the curve

When was the last time Suresh Gopi delivered a solo-hero hit film? The answer to that would be Nadiya Kollappetta Rathri in 2007. There were two notable blockbusters in between, with an ensemble cast in Twenty Twenty (2008) and Christian Brothers (2011), both incidentally directed by Joshiy who delivers once again with Paappan .

Now, Paappan may not score on all parameters. But it works nonetheless as an investigative thriller on the lines of Anjam Pathira and Foresnic with a bit of family drama thrown in the mix. As with many such thrillers that have done well in Malayalam cinema of late, there are some loose ends and there is a constant effort to stay ahead of the viewer which one can always quibble about. But for the average viewer who goes with an open mind, Paappan would surprise you pleasantly, for it well exceeds one’s expectations.

And it should work for the Suresh Gopi fans too with the star back in his element as a veteran cop living with a troubled past and a scar that continues to haunt him physically and emotionally to date. But Suresh Gopi isn’t the central character in the film, that would be Neetha Pillai, in what would be the most honest portrayal of a female top cop in Malayalam cinema to date. Playing Vincy Abraham IPS, daughter of Suresh Gopi’s Abraham Mathew Mathen, Pillai is a perfect fit.

Also Read: Kaduva review: Prithviraj’s film no match for Kuruvachan’s real-life heroics

And Joshiy, in his 44 th year in the industry as a director, continues to defy conventions and stay ahead of the curve. For someone who started his career with Tiger Salim (1978), when his name was spelt Joshy, the ace director keeps adapting himself to the times over and over again. With Paappan, Joshiy makes a clean investigative thriller and subtle political points are made without making them too apparent. There is a part where Vincy Abraham’s subordinate officer played by Tini Tom refers to an actress as ‘charakku’, a term many middle-aged Malayali uncles use without too much thought being told off with: “Are you a lorry driver to use such language?”, following it up with, “You don’t need to be respectful but please at least don’t be disrespectful to women.”

Perhaps Neetha Pillai landed the film on the basis of her performance in Abrid Shine’s The Kung Fu Master, and she is every bit convincing here. Pillai aside, there is Nyla Usha, Kaniha and Asha Sharath, all getting due prominence. There’s also Gokul Suresh, who plays a supporting role but still adds a bit of real-life father-son dynamics to the screen with Suresh Gopi in their first on-screen collaboration.

The script by RJ Shaan has its moments but could have been tightened up to make it more realistic. By keeping the pace brisk, Paappan keeps the audience hooked on to the screen. In the opening sequence, news channels are shown flashing that a superstar has been killed without any visual evidence, which is implausible, although the investigation part is fairly realistic. Jakes Bejoy’s BGM is good as always, and so is Ajay David Kachappilly’s cinematography.

Also Read: Rocketry review: Madhavan’s film dazzles, but veers off course now and then

As with Joshiy’s previous sleeper hit release Porinchu Mariyam Jose (2019), Paappan is likely to become a commercial success and might as well be Suresh Gopi’s first major solo-hit in 15 years. Paappan has been in the making for a while and would have hit theatres sooner but for COVID and Suresh Gopi’s political commitments. With the big-budget Ottakomban and the sequel to Highway (1995) with Jayaraj to follow, the superstar is well and truly back after a long hiatus.

For someone whose initial claim to fame in Malayalam cinema was making big-budget films with ensemble casts in combination with Pappanamcode Lakshmanan to teaming up with Mammootty and Dennis Joseph and later going on to reinvent himself many times over, Paappan should fuel Joshiy to go on for a few more years, making him a one-of-a-kind evergreen director in Mollywood.

For the most part, Joshiy's Paappan is like every other whodunit thriller. It is an investigation into a group of murders with a similar pattern and connections to the past. The perpetrator leaves something behind at each crime scene to tease the cops while allowing police to connect the dots. It is the oldest way of telling a whodunit story. At the start of the movie, cops suspect that the murders are the work of a serial killer. But the more they look into the whole thing, the farther they get from the killer.

A large part of Paappan is information heavy. It is a good idea to keep a notebook and a pen handy when watching the film because every other scene here is loaded with an infodump. It does not help that Joshiy's storytelling style only makes things clear a little while after the movie provides us with a piece of information or two. It becomes a tad confusing when the investigators mention new names of people connected to the murders all of a sudden.

You have to be a fan of the genre to tolerate the slight lag in the screenplay and the truckloads of information hurled at the audience. I am a big fan of the genre, so I have tons of patience for films like these. There is always the possibility of a plot twist around the corner, so I watch a whodunit with an open mind and very closely even as the pacing dips or the movie becomes less engaging.

A good thing with Paappan is that the movie becomes more engaging as it approaches the climax. It has a villain with a strong reason for the killings. I am not promoting violence here but rather saying that in a cinematic sense, the killer has a strong motive to do what the person does here. There are no red herrings or fake suspense elements here. Each twist comes organically out of the screenplay. It is a clean suspense thriller, with an interesting plot element that discusses some issues with modern society.

The movie has a slow pace but comes to life towards the end where Joshiy gets his act together. Joshiy still has an incredible ability to tell a really complex story with an ensemble cast. Almost every actor here has a role with substance that is blended well into the story.

Neeta Pillai has expressive eyes and a body language that befits a high-ranking officer. She is also good in the action sequences here. The mansplaining that her character undergoes is a bit cringe-worthy, though. It may not undermine the character and only shows the relative lack of professional experience of her character, but the makers should have been a bit more subtle about it. Suresh Gopi's effort to break away from conventional action hero roles is commendable. Paappan is another recent film where Suresh Gopi's character fails at least the same number of times as he succeeds. That approach with the failures of the hero works here, unlike in a film like Kaaval, because those play a key part in the plot. Much of the father-daughter sentiment also works here.

Gokul Suresh is a likeable presence, but he does not have a character with any sort of substance. Ajmal Ameer is quite good in a small role. It is amazing that Ajmal still looks a lot similar to his character from 14 years ago in Madambi. But the best performance in the movie comes from Sajitha Madathil in the role of a controlling woman. Sajitha Madathil's character reminds me of Shweta Menon's role in Ozhimuri.

The film is also well produced. The filmography is exemplary, although it seems like some of the scenes are merely shot for the posters. Jakes Bejoy's music is a bummer and a bit too loud in places. Joshiy is still a confident filmmaker, though. It is just that his plot-heavy narration requires some patience.

What a pathetic casting this movie had? What happened to Mr. Joshiy? Or is it the producer who decided on the cast? Well... Show more

Paappan out on OTT: Where to watch Suresh Gopi’s crime thriller in Telugu

Suresh Gopi has always been a crime-thriller, cop-drama specialist over the years and audiences got to witness a vintage avatar of the Malayalam star through his release Paappan last year. The Joshiy directorial earned decent responses from audiences and critics alike. After impressing Malayalam audiences, the thriller is now coming to entertain Telugu crowds on OTT.

Noted OTT platform ETV Win, owned by the Eenadu group, has acquired the streaming rights of Paappan’s Telugu version. Nearly a year after its theatrical run in Malayalam, the streamer decided to premiere the film in Telugu this Friday. Neeta Pillai, Asha Sharath, Nyla Usha, Ajmal Ameer, Rahul Madhav, Vijaya Raghavan played other crucial roles in the film written by RJ Shaan.

The story commences when the modus operandi of a crime resembles that of a serial killer, who was only recently released from prison. A former circle inspector Abraham Mathan Mathew is roped in as a consultant by the police chief. The earlier case, however, affected Abraham’s life – both professionally and personally. His estranged daughter and police officer Vincy is now leading the case.

The new case leads to Abraham reopening old wounds while also trying to patch up their broken relationship. As the number of victims rise, Abraham and Vincy must work together to track down the serial killer and find the motive. David Kachappilly and Raaffi Mathirra originally bankrolled the film under David Kachappilly Productions and Iffaar Media. Jakes Bejoy scored the music.

Ajay David Kachappilly is the cinematographer for the film edited by Shyam Sasidharan. Nimesh. M. Thanoor is the art director. The Malayalam version of the film can also streamed on ZEE5. “Paappan is a welcome return to form by Suresh Gopi and Joshiy. The crime drama, despite its three-hour duration, has twists to keep you interested,” OTTplay.com 's critic wrote about the film.

Paappan Movie Review: Few neat touches in a largely exhausting film

Rating: ( 2 / 5).

In an ideal Suresh Gopi cop thriller, the superstar would be a dominant presence throughout -- unless, of course, he is playing a cameo in another superstar's thriller. There are times when Paappan feels like a Suresh Gopi movie and times when it doesn't. It mostly leans towards the latter. However, it does feel like a Joshiy movie, albeit a lesser one. Paappan is closer in spirit to one of my favourite Joshiy thrillers, Ee Thanutha Veluppan Kalathu ( ETVK ). In that film, Mammootty played the investigating officer, and Suresh Gopi was a suspect. At one point in Paappan , Suresh Gopi's seasoned policeman has to deal with a suspect who goes through a similar situation as his character did in ETVK . The ETVK-Paappan similarities don't end there, but going further might give away crucial plot points.

Cast: Suresh Gopi, Neeta Pillai

Director: Joshiy One of the 90s-set flashback events in Paappan  — and one can see why Joshiy was apt for the material — is not too different from that of another iconic Suresh Gopi cop, Bharatchandran. Like its eponymous antihero, Paappan often feels like a relic from a different era and suffers as a result. What's strange is how Joshiy, who got naturalistic performances out of actors in another contemporary film of his set entirely in the 90s, Porinju Mariam Jose , has now made a movie with Malayalam television-friendly performances. It's the main reason why the film, despite some neat twists, becomes a strenuous experience. Does the story justify the 170-min runtime? Yes, but there's a catch: enduring every patience-testing development preceding those twists. I'm not saying that all of Paappan is a bore. We get some nice touches, like having Vincy (Neeta Pillai), the estranged police daughter of Paappan, headline the investigation. You might ask if Paappan is not involved in the same. He is, but his is more of a 'background' investigation, the details of which are only gradually revealed. This is a man whose daughter looks at her father the same way Karthika looked at Kamal Haasan in Nayagan . He also gets us curious: Is this a man motivated by vengeance? Or is this a man who knows that he shouldn't let his past tragedy get in the way of true sleuth work? Is he capable of being dispassionate? I also liked how the after-effects of past events have repercussions on the present. It takes you through multiple murders, twists and turns, most of which serve as effective -- to a certain extent -- red herrings. The film opens with a murder where the victim turns out to be someone unexpected. The murder pattern resembles something that occurred decades ago. There is a killer from a past who also happens to be a killer with a past. The same killer is attached to his mother à la Norman Bates from Alfred Hitchcock's Psycho . When similar murders occur again, the suspicion naturally falls on one individual. Did he really do it? Or was it someone else? There was one twist, in particular, I found refreshing. I felt the film would've worked much more had the makers concluded everything with it instead of introducing an additional element for intensity-amping. It's not only a classic case of too many cooks spoiling the broth but also of hammy, unintentionally comical performances diluting the impact of the proceedings. Suresh Gopi does the seasoned cop act quite decently. But everyone else behaves as though they have been instructed to perform like teleserial actors. Most of the lines are downright cringe-inducing and jarring. At one point, a character tells his wife, "When there is 'we too', why should you worry about Me Too?" Such lines, appearing in the very early portions of the film, get you more concerned about the remainder of the film's duration. There is a nagging worry about dealing with more lines like this in the rest of the film.  I also felt Neetha Pillai, who was brilliant in Abrid Shine's Poomaram and Kung Fu Master —  was an ill-fit for Vincy because she didn't seem comfortable, evident in the straining manner she emotes whenever burdened by heavy emotions. We don't get to see anything inventive in terms of the storytelling/filmmaking approach either. Once again, we get the much-familiar zooms and frame rate manipulations we have seen numerous times before. The familiarity is also a problem with respect to the visuals (teal-and-orange lighting) and Jakes Bejoy's repetitively deja vu-inducing score. At a time when we have seen superior investigative thrillers from all over the world, Paappan feels quite outdated.

In an official confirmation, Amazon has announced that this riveting action drama, portraying the journey of an honest cop, will be available for streaming post-theatrical release. This means that fans can witness the gripping fight against corruption from their home comfort.
