General entry requirements include a completed master’s degree from a Swedish university or at least 240 higher education credits including at least 60 at the master’s level, or the corresponding international equivalents.

Institutions may have specific eligibility requirements. Verify the requirements for your area of interest with the relevant institution.

How to apply

One thing that differentiates PhD programmes at Stockholm University and Sweden from those elsewhere is that most of our PhD students are treated like full employees of the university. PhD positions are posted alongside other jobs on our website and applications are made for specific positions. PhD positions can be announced once or twice per year, depending on funding availability.

Before sending your application, you can check the department’s website for further information about the faculty and the possibilities connected with the PhD position. You can also find specific information about the application process in the announce for the position, along with the contact person if you have further questions.

There is usually an opportunity to apply for doctoral studies both in the autumn and spring. On the institutions' websites about doctoral studies, you can find the specific dates applicable to that institution. You can also see the current doctoral positions advertised.

Applying for a doctoral (PhD) position

Doctoral education is organised at the faculty or department level. Application procedures and periods differ between faculties and departments. While some of them advertise their doctoral positions around the same time every year, mostly in spring, others advertise their positions on an ongoing basis.

You apply for a doctoral education position within a certain subject area. Admission to a doctoral education position is restricted and competition for advertised positions is usually tough.

Finding a suitable position

Any funded doctoral positions at Lund University are advertised on our vacancies page on this website (see link below). Select the category 'Doctoral students'.

Once you have found a position you are interested in, carefully read through the vacancy announcement to find out whether you meet the requirements.

Before you apply, we recommend that you also check the relevant faculty's or department's website for any additional information about the application process.

Should you have any questions about a specific position, please contact the contact person(s) listed in the vacancy announcement.

Employment as a doctoral student

As a general rule, a person admitted to doctoral studies at Lund University is employed through a doctoral studentship.

If you have a doctoral studentship, you are considered to be both a student and an employee with a salary during your doctoral studies. As an employed doctoral student, you are covered by local and central agreements concerning your terms of employment.

In parallel to the doctoral education programme, as a doctoral student you may work with administrative and teaching duties (no more than 20% of a full-time position).

Lund University is responsible for education-related matters and the study environment regardless of how you finance your doctoral studies. All doctoral students also have access to the University’s Occupational Health Service.

Other forms of financing

It is possible to undertake your studies using another form of financing, such as an external scholarship or an agreement between Lund University and an external employer.

Financed by external employer

If you are admitted to doctoral studies and have a position with an employer other than Lund University, you are solely a student, and it is the employer who is responsible for employer-related matters.

External scholarships

As a doctoral student with a scholarship, you are solely a student. You are therefore not entitled to contractual employment benefits at Lund University.

In some cases, a doctoral student with a scholarship is entitled to apply for a doctoral studentship when three years remain of the third-cycle studies.

Scholarship possibilities for international applicants 2024

The application window for the academic semester 2024/2025 is very much open. However, for many students, funding their studies in Sweden is a big concern, especially for fee-paying students. Luckily, the University of Gothenburg has a good track record of attracting SI Global Scholarship recipients. We also have our own Scholarship Programme that covers the tuition for 112 of our current students.

The Swedish Institute Scholarships for Global Professionals (SISGP) are awarded to ambitious global professionals for full-time master's studies in Sweden. The Scholarship is fully funded and is aimed at citizens in 41 listed countries. There are several criteria that need to be fulfilled to be eligible, and work experience is one of them. Through the scholarship, the Swedish Institute aims to develop a network of future global leaders who will contribute to the United Nations' 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.

We attract the right students

The University of Gothenburg currently has 55 SI Scholarship holders from the admission years 2022 and 2023. We are not surprised at all; every year, we attract ambitious students who want to make a change! We will happily welcome more for the admission in 2024.

Our own Scholarship Programs

Since the SISGP only focuses on a few countries and is aimed solely at master's level studies, the University of Gothenburg has worked hard to establish our own scholarship program, the Axel Adler Scholarship. This is a tuition fee waiver and is open to students who choose the University of Gothenburg as their first-choice university on universityadmissions.se. The faculties will choose the most qualified students. Currently, 112 students are funded by this program, and we aim to reward 70-80 new scholarships for admission in 2024 . Students applying for a Master's Programme at the School of Business, Economics and Law also have the possibility to apply for a partial tuition waiver, called   The Richard C. Malmsten Memorial Foundation Scholarship .

The Chances of Getting a Scholarship

Many ambitious and highly skilled students apply to the University of Gothenburg,  the competition is there for sure. But this shouldn't discourage from giving it your best shot! Here is all the information you need about the three mentioned scholarships:

  • SI Scholarship for Global Professionals
  • Axel Adler Scholarship
  • Richard C. Malmsten Memorial Foundation Scholarship

I’m conditionally admitted, what now? If you have been conditionally admitted, you will have received information regarding what you need to do to finalise your admission.

I was only listed as reserved or placed on the waiting list… Those who are not admitted to an eligible master’s programme by this date or are only listed as reserves or are placed on the waiting list will not be considered for the scholarship.

5. Final evaluation and announcement of SI scholarship recipients - 21 Mar 2024 - 25 Apr 2024

After the admissions results are announced by University Admissions on the 21 March 2024, SI starts to make a final evaluation of the applications that are still eligible for the scholarship. SI receives a separate list of admitted students from Stockholm School of Economics (SSE) and Konstfack – University of Arts, Craft and Design.

The rigid screening and evaluation process provides us with a shortlist of the best candidates. In the final evaluation, we give priority to certain factors, therefore thoroughly read through the call for applications above, as it explains what we take into consideration.

We aim at having all genders represented as equally as possible in the final list of scholarship recipients. We also want to include as many of the eligible countries, provided there is a sufficient number of quality applications. We also need to stay within our budget. We may make additional adjustments in the final selection to achieve the distribution we are aiming for. However, we do not have any quotas for specific countries, fields of study, Swedish universities etcetera.

In 2024, we aim to grant around 300 scholarships. The SI scholarship is highly competitive and the number of recipients from different countries, and to certain programmes/universities may differ from year to year, depending on the quality of the applications received.

When all the above factors have been taken into consideration, the final selection of scholarship recipients will be completed.

Announcement of SI scholarship recipients In the afternoon of 25 April 2024, the successful SI scholarship recipients of Global Professionals 2024 are announced on si.se. Due to a large number of applications, only those who are offered a scholarship will be notified.

Accept your scholarship offer Each recipient will receive an official scholarship offer by email between 26 and 29 April 2024. The recipient is responsible for ensuring that the email address provided in the application is correct. The scholarship must then be accepted or declined by the deadline indicated in the offer.

7 exciting scholarships in Sweden for international students

Ask graduates and many will say to study for free in Sweden is a dream come true for any international student. Why? First off, you’ll be part of a student-centric system, where relationships between students and teachers are very relaxed — you are even expected to call your teachers by their first names).

Another key reason is the famed Swedish education system. It focuses on your academic interests and values team players. Most degree programmes combine lectures with practical work in direct preparation for the job market.

In Sweden, you’ll also be surrounded by inspiring innovation. As one of the world’s most modern countries, it’s also where many successful corporations are founded. Spotify (now worth US$67 billion!), H&M, and IKEA are a few of the many businesses that have made it big.

More reasons you should study for free in Sweden

Sweden is just as green as it is innovative. It is known to be the most sustainable country in the world — some of this can be seen through their efforts through electric buses, urban farming, food banks, and encouraging beekeeping.

We could go on and on but we’ll skip to the best part: if you’re an EU citizen, tuition fees are free. If you’re from a non-EU country, costs are approximately 7,500 euros to 25,000 euros a year (depending on the uni and programme).

This makes it cheaper than the 21,000 euros to 30,000 euros at public unis in the US. What’s more, PhD courses are free for all international students.

Several scholarships — by the government and unis — make it possible for international candidates to study for free. We take a look at some below.

ICLD 2022 Women’s Political Leadership for elected young women in developing countries

This programme is open to women candidates in Albania, Botswana, Georgia, Indonesia, Kosovo, Moldova, Montenegro, Namibia, North Macedonia, Rwanda, Serbia, Tanzania, Turkey, Uganda, Ukraine, Vietnam, Zambia and Zimbabwe. It focuses on political leadership skills.

Sweden Government Scholarship 2024-2025 (SISGP)

Photo of admin

The Swedish Institute Scholarship is a program funded by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs that hopes to evolve young leaders to help in the United Nations 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development in their own country. It is also a platform to help scholars grow professionally and build a network in Sweden.

The only program offered for international students under this Sweden Government scholarship is the master’s degree program. Bachelor’s degree program is not covered by the SI scholarship. The selection process for this scholarship is tough and only 4-6% of the applicants will be granted with scholarship.

There are 42 countries eligible for this scholarship namely Armenia; Azerbaijan; Bangladesh; Bolivia; Belarus; Brazil; Cambodia; Cameroon; Colombia; Ecuador; Egypt; Ethiopia; Gambia; Georgia; Ghana; Guatemala; Honduras; Indonesia; Jordan; Kenya; Liberia; Malawi; Moldova; Morocco; Myanmar (Burma); Nepal; Nigeria; Pakistan; Peru; Philippines; Russian Federation; Rwanda; Sri Lanka; Sudan; Tanzania; Tunisia; Turkey; Uganda; Ukraine; Vietnam; Zambia; and Zimbabwe.

Sweden Government scholarship benefits

The SI will pay the full amount of tuition fees to the university that you will be attending for a full-time one-year or two-year master’s program. Throughout the scholarship, a monthly allowance of SEK 10,000 will be awarded to cover the living expenses.

A travel allowance of SEK 10,000 is rewarded to students from Azerbaijan, Georgia, Armenia, Belarus, Russian Federation, Turkey, Ukraine, or Moldova. A travel allowance of SEK 15,000 will be given to students from Brazil, Bolivia, Bangladesh, Cameroon, Colombia, Cambodia, Egypt, Ethiopia, Ecuador, Ghana, Gambia, Guatemala, Indonesia, Honduras, Kenya, Liberia, Morocco, Myanmar, Jordan, Malawi, Nigeria, Nepal, Peru, Pakistan, Philippines, Sri Lanka, Rwanda, Tunisia, Tanzania, Vietnam, Sudan, Zambia, Zimbabwe.

The travel allowance does not cover students who are already living in Sweden. Application fees and grants for family members who come with the student in Sweden are not included.

Eligibility Criteria for the Sweden Government scholarship

An applicant must be a citizen of one of the 42 countries eligible for the SI scholarship. Sufficient documents that prove work and leadership experience must be submitted. If you have dual citizenship, you must use only one citizenship to apply for this Sweden Government scholarship. Using both citizenships to apply for more than one scholarship will mean disqualification. An exception to this dual citizenship criteria is Romanian students with dual citizenship. They may still apply but must use the citizenship eligible for the SI Scholarship for Global Professionals.

Applicants from countries not mentioned in the scope of this scholarship may look for other scholarship opportunities .

For the requirement on work experience, at least 3,000 hours of work experience before the start of application from not more than three organizations is required. This may include full-time and part-time employment, as an employee, employer, or freelancer. Current employment during the time of application is not obligatory for Sweden Government Scholarships.

Applicants with strong professional backgrounds will be prioritized.

Work experience related to the United Nations 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development will be given utmost priority for applicants from Bangladesh; Bolivia; Brazil; Cambodia; Cameroon; Colombia; Ecuador; Egypt; Ethiopia; Gambia; Ghana; Guatemala; Honduras; Indonesia; Jordan; Kenya; Liberia; Malawi; Morocco; Myanmar (Burma); Nepal; Nigeria; Pakistan; Peru; Philippines; Rwanda; Sri Lanka; Sudan; Tanzania; Tunisia; Uganda; Vietnam; Zambia; and Zimbabwe.

Related experience within the field of democracy, human rights, gender equality, independent media, and equal opportunities and non-discrimination are prioritized in applicants from Turkey.

For the leadership experience, you may demonstrate this by your previous work experience, or association in civil society organizations. This includes experience in leading other colleagues or organizations, the mandate to influence the development strategy for the organization, and experience in decision-making processes. No minimum number of hours is required.

Language proficiency is not a requirement for application to a master’s program.

You can be disqualified if you have already lived in Sweden for more than two years before the Sweden Government scholarship period, hold a degree from a Swedish university or college, are currently enrolled in a study program at a Swedish university, or hold a Swedish or EU/EEA citizenship.

How to apply to the Sweden Government scholarship

First, you must find out if the master’s program is available for your country of citizenship. Next, check if you are eligible for the said program. There are about 600 master’s programs that are being taught in English here . Apply through university admissions to apply for master’s programs or directly to the Swedish university that is eligible for SI scholarships. After applying, submit the required documents and pay the application fee. The fee is not for the SI scholarship but for the admission application to the university admissions. You do not need to inform the SI of your application fee because the SI will receive the information directly from the university admissions. Save the application number that will appear on your account.

On the Swedish Institute website , submit all the documents needed as instructed by the website. Fill out the online application form and attach all the documents. Make sure to submit before the application deadline. Documents for the Sweden Government scholarship application include a motivation letter, letter of reference, valid and completed proof of work and leadership experience, a copy of your valid passport, and curriculum vitae.

The university will evaluate the applications and issue the result of the application at the university admissions. Once accepted to a master’s program, another selection process will be conducted by the Swedish Institute. The list of successful applicants will be published on the website and a confirmation e-mail will be sent also.

Application deadline for the Sweden Government scholarship

The scholarship application period for the autumn semester is around October and ends in February. Spring semester application opens in June and ends in September. Be wary of the dates because the application period may change from time to time. Take note of key dates and deadlines for more successful admission.
