The best NGO scholarship for poor students in Kenya
1. DAAD in-country and in-region PHD program
These DAAD PhD scholarships are offered at the Regional Centre for Drought Adaptation (CERAAS) located in Senegal. CERAAS seeks to curb the challenges that result to low agricultural productions in drought stricken areas. It does this by providing technical solutions to mitigate the vice and assure quality food supply that results in improved standards of living for many.
Applicants should be from sub-Saharan countries, of which Kenya is part. DAAD, a German Academic Exchange Service, promotes academic exchanges at an international level, and co-operation to enhance education opportunities with developing countries by providing funding and opportunities for scholarships for interested students.
Details of the program:
- It includes both in-country scholarships, where students can pursue the PHD course in their own country, and in-region scholarships where students can pursue the same scholarship in another sub-Saharan country.
- The scholarship offers programs that are relevant to national development include Genetics, Genomics, Physiology, Agronomy, Plant Breeding, Agroforestry, and Plant Health.
- It offers two in-region and one in-country scholarship.
- The scholarship covers tuition fees, study and research allowance, a final allowance, a monthly scholarship which involves food and accommodation, and a travel allowance for those studying in-region.
- Scholarship holders are also highly encouraged to apply for an additional benefit which includes a 2 to 3 months research grant in Germany. This will come with scholarship payment for living costs, health/personal/accident liability insurance, and a flat-rate allowance for travel expenses. More details on the additional benefits are provided once one is admitted to the scholarship program.
- The program does not discriminate and encourages female applicants, as well as those from less privileged regions and groups.

Call for Applications: CARTA PhD Fellowships 2025
The Consortium for Advanced Research Training in Africa (CARTA) invites applications for its prestigious PhD Fellowships for the year 2025. CARTA is a collaborative initiative involving eight African universities, four African research institutes, and eight non-African partners. Our mission is to bolster the capacity of African institutions to conduct globally competitive research, with a particular focus on addressing health and development challenges in the region.
CARTA PhD Fellowship
As part of its innovations, CARTA offers a collaborative doctoral training program in public and population health. This program has been developed in response to the great challenges faced by Africa’s institutions of higher education in addressing the training and retention of the next generation of academics in the region. Specifically, CARTA seeks to fund candidates who will be future leaders in their institutions. That is, young, capable, and committed individuals who, in time, will ensure that their universities will be the institutions of choice for future generations of academics and university administrators wishing to make a positive impact on public and population health in Africa.
The multi-disciplinary CARTA PhD fellowship is open to staff members of participating institutions who are interested in conducting their PhD research on topics relevant to the broad fields of public and population health. We welcome applications from any discipline, such as public health, demography, anthropology, communication, and economics, among others, as long as the research question aims to contribute to public and population health issues in Africa. CARTA is committed to gender equity in access to the training programs and governance structure and implements a series of interventions to support the progress of women in academia (see CARTA’s gender position ). Women are therefore particularly encouraged to apply.
Successful applicants will attend CARTA’s innovative series of Joint Advanced Seminars (JASES) for cohorts of doctoral students admitted and registered in the participating African universities. Both the development and delivery of these courses are jointly led by regional and international experts. The seminars include didactic sessions, discussions, demonstrations, and practice labs. These activities collectively serve to:
- Expose students to key theories and concepts, seminal readings, and research methods of disciplines relevant to public and population health;
- Train students in critical research skills; and
- Build and maintain a network of researchers for scientific collaborations, professional support, and mutually beneficial exchange of scientific resources.
JASes are offered once annually for four years to each cohort and build skills and conceptual depth from year to year. Each JAS runs for 3 to 4 weeks. Specific topics covered in each JAS include the following:
- JAS-1 (March 2025) builds critical thinking, technical skills, and other core research competencies, and introduces students to the essential concepts and seminal articles of the disciplines brought together under CARTA
- JAS-2 (November 2025) focuses on data management and analysis. Fellows learn to use software packages for qualitative and quantitative data management and analyses. Practice sessions use real research data and current software packages for hands-on training
- JAS-3 (August 2027) focuses on data presentation, the doctoral dissertation, and scientific writing and communication skills to facilitate results dissemination and policy engagement
- JAS-4 (March 2028) addresses professional development including skills necessary to manage and teach large class sizes, raise and manage research funds, grant writing, and research management.
In 2025, the CARTA program plans to offer up to 15 PhD fellowships and two additional fellowships reserved for staff members of the Somali National University (SNU), Somalia, who will be mentored by one of the CARTA partners, Makerere University, Uganda. The fellowships, which are tenable at the CARTA African universities, include the following benefits:
- The cost of the fellow’s participation in the advanced seminars;
- A modest monthly stipend; moderate support for research activities;
- A laptop loaded with relevant software;
- Funds to attend one international conference; and
- Support to participate in training programs of choice.
Note : The CARTA fellowships run for a maximum of four years. Fellowships will only cover tuition fees, medical insurance, and travel support for fellows registered at a partner institution different from their own.
Respective African partner institutions need to commit to continue paying fellows’ salaries (or equivalent) as faculty members and to modify their workloads for the fellows, to enable them to fully participate in CARTA-organized activities pertaining to their PhD program and also to concentrate on their PhD studies. The partner institutions will also need to commit to waive the fellows’ fees if they are registered at the institution where they are employed. Nawangwe renews call for Govt sponsorship of PhD students
The Independent April 26, 2024 NEWS Leave a comment
Kampala, Uganda | THE INDEPENDENT | Makerere University dons have renewed calls for government to provide scholarships for PhD (Doctor of Philsophy) students.
This was during the opening day of the annual forum for graduate research and policy dialogue held at Makerere University’s Yusuf Lule Teaching Facility on Thursday.
Makerere is organizing the two-day event which is merged with the annual doctoral convention under the theme of Regional Integration and Development to serve as a pivotal platform for fostering dynamic discourse among academia, policymakers, and stakeholders, aiming to bridge the gap between research and policy implementation in Uganda.
Several students use the forum to interact and share their research areas, critique concepts and proposals, and research outputs.
Professor Barnabas Nawangwe, the Makerere University Vice Chancellor who gave the keynote address said that Makerere has long advocated for scholarships for PHD students or loan schemes to increase the number of students that enroll in PhD programs.
Nawangwe also said that Makerere has for long wanted to graduate more PhDs in line with the World Bank’s call for African universities to produce at least 100,000 Ph.D. graduates annually. However, achieving this goal has been hindered by the high cost of PhD education.
He made reference to China which is growing at a high speed and put China’s development as the focus they injected in higher education and produced several Ph.Ds. He said if Uganda is to develop, it should replicate what is taking place in China.
Tuition fees for PhD students at Makerere University vary from 5 to 10 million Shillings per year, depending on the nature of their program of study.
Additionally, research expenses range from 10 to 20 million Shillings, a fee that poses a significant financial burden for many students and often compels many students to abandon their programs due to a lack of funds.
Speaking to URN on the sidelines, Nawangwe said that the university’s request for funding is not excessive. He proposed that a government investment of 3 billion Shillings in PhD scholarships could support more than 300 students across different universities.
It should be noted that; during the 74th graduation earlier this year, Makerere University graduated 132 Ph.D students, the highest ever for the university.
Professor Edward Baale, the Director of the Directorate of Research and Graduate Training said that there is evidence that the return on investment in higher education has outcompeted the investment in lower education, and used this to ask the government to fund PhDs because they can create businesses opportunities which are engines to economic growth.
Currently, the government only offers sponsorships to undergraduate students.
At least 4,000 students across different public universities including Makerere, Kyambogo, Mbarara, Busitema, MUBS, Kabale, Lira, Muni, and Gulu receive government sponsorship every year.
Dr. John Chrysostom Muyingo the State Minister for Higher Education who was the Chief Guest noted that the government is aware of the kind of impact that Education has on regional integration and therefore prioritizing it in their interest.
“Education and research play a pivotal role in driving regional integration and development. As a scholar and researcher, you are uniquely positioned to contribute to this noble endeavor. Your pursuit of knowledge and academic excellence holds the promise of transformative change, catalyzing innovation, progress, and inclusive growth.” He said.
One of the students Grace Adella who studies Energy, Economics, and Governance at MUBS presented their research paper; which examined the environmental influences on electricity reliability in Uganda’s grid system specifically looking at the reliability of Uganda’s electricity.
In her research, she revealed that Uganda experiences power outages approximately 84 times a month due to fluctuating water levels in Lake Victoria caused by climate variations.
In her recommendations, Adella proposed regional cooperation to manage Lake Victoria’s water levels consistently, which she believes could alleviate the challenge of electricity outages.

Max Proctor, featured above with Hercules beetles, is one of three Wichita State University students who have been awarded the prestigious Graduate Research Fellowship from the National Science Foundation.
Shocker students earn coveted NSF graduate research awards
By Sara Ornelas, Strategic Communications
Three Wichita State University students have secured the prestigious Graduate Research Fellowship from the National Science Foundation — an award worth $159,000 over three years.
The students — Anthony Ciletti, a senior in mechanical engineering; Reilly Jensen, who is pursuing a master’s degree in biomedical engineering; and Max Proctor, a second-year master’s student studying biological sciences — were chosen among more than 12,000 students nationwide who applied for the fellowship.
According to the NSF, the Graduate Research Fellowship Program “recognizes and supports outstanding graduate students who are pursuing full-time research-based master's and doctoral degrees in science, technology, engineering and mathematics or in STEM education.”
Anthony Ciletti
Ciletti came to Wichita State from Lucas, Texas, about an hour outside of Dallas. Among the 13 colleges he visited and considered, he chose WSU for its connections to the aircraft industry and the opportunities available through the National Institute for Aviation Research.
“My visit here turned WSU from another university I didn’t even know existed into my top choice,” he said.
During his first year at WSU, Ciletti connected with Dr. Bhisham Sharma, former WSU assistant professor of aerospace engineering. Sharma invited Ciletti to work on the research being done at the Mechanics, Acoustics and Dynamics Laboratory (MADLab). The project focused on using 3D printing to study new designs and structures for materials that absorb sound.
“In my first year working with Dr. Sharma, I wore a lot of hats, learned a lot and assisted with other projects. I worked on 3D printing, topology creation software, acoustic measuring equipment, image processing and acoustic analysis,” Ciletti said.
Eventually, Ciletti settled into his own research focusing on developing a method to predict the acoustic performance of non-periodic porous materials using 3D representations, aiming to streamline the design process for specific applications.
“The research I’m doing is certainly quite different from the traditional focuses of aerospace in the big four — aerodynamics, structures, propulsion and stability and control. But advancing aerospace design is a multi-disciplinary effort, where every aspect of flight and operations needs significant attention and specialized solutions,” he said. “I hope the work I’m doing will be a small part of what makes the next generation of aircraft faster, safer, greener and — in my case — quieter.”
Ciletti also works with NASA on his research. He is an Experiential Aeronautics Fellow with NASA in Kansas and has been an intern at NASA Langley’s Liner Physics Team.
“Anthony's research bridges the gap between fundamental materials science and real-world applications, aiming to create quieter, more efficient and ultimately safer airplanes,” said Dr. Anthony Muscat, dean of WSU’s College of Engineering.
Ciletti will graduate from Wichita State with a bachelor’s degree in May and will then attend graduate school.
Reilly Jensen
It was his grandmother who inspired Reilly Jensen’s proposal on his Graduate Research Fellowship application. Through his research, Jensen wants to use a radio frequency resonator alongside artificial intelligence to detect and classify cerebral strokes in a rabbit model.
“My grandmother suffered from a stroke around this time last year. Though she had a wonderful recovery, I realized how critical the time from the onset of stroke to treatment is,” Jensen said. “If a more rapid method for detecting and classifying strokes can be developed, more of the 13.7 million strokes reported every year will have better outcomes.”
Jensen came to Wichita State from Buhler, Kansas, to pursue his graduate studies after earning a bachelor’s degree from Kansas State University.
“I was impressed with the facilities, faculty and resources available to the students when I first toured the campus. Additionally, I get the opportunity to be closer to family,” he said.
His stroke research will involve microwave sensing and imaging, animal models of cerebral stroke, machine and deep learning methods, and the impact of cerebral strokes on public health.
"Reilly’s research aims to develop a rapid, easy-to-use microwave sensor for stroke detection, potentially improving patient outcomes by expediting diagnosis and treatment,” Muscat said.
After he completes his master’s research, Jensen said he’ll pursue his Ph.D. and then possibly work with brain-computer interfaces.
“Ultimately, I hope to contribute to research which will reduce suffering in the world via engineering principles,” he said.
Max Proctor
When someone asked Dr. Mary Liz Jameson, professor of biological sciences, if she’d heard Max Proctor’s good news, she had to pause and ask, “Let’s see: Which of Max’s exciting news are you referring to?”
Not only has Proctor earned the NSF’s Graduate Research Fellowship, but he has also completed his thesis and earned a fellowship in Taiwan to study Hercules beetles.
Beetles are a big deal for Proctor. In fact, they’re the reason he came to WSU.
“I came to Wichita State so I could work with Dr. Mary Liz Jameson,” he said. “Dr. Jameson is a highly regarded specialist of scarab beetles, which are my favorite. Dr. Jameson has a reputation for being an amazing advisor so I knew her lab would be the perfect place.”
Proctor’s research focus is on the evolution and ecology of animal weapons, and he examines how larval diet and temperature alter the expression of horns in the dung beetle.
“Many scarab beetles have elaborate horns and weapons that make you question how could nature get so crazy!” he said.
For the NSF award, Proctor proposed “to determine why certain animal species evolved multiple different kinds of weapons.”
For that, he will travel to Taiwan to study the Dicronocephalus wallichii, or the reindeer beetle, which “uses both horns and extended forelimbs to fight.”
“The research Max proposed for his GRPF is his big dream – since the first day that I spoke with him about his aspirations,” said Jameson. “It is important to dream big.”
The NSF award will give Proctor an opportunity to focus completely on his research, said Dr. Andrew Hippisley, dean of the Fairmount College of Liberal Arts and Sciences.
The highly competitive award will provide Proctor with the support needed to pursue his passion: three years of financial aid that includes an annual stipend of $37,000.
“What this means is that Max can focus 100% on his education and make a strong start to what looks like an exciting research program. I am thrilled for him,” Hippisley said.

Students fill Academic Lawn, Prayer Chapel for end-of-semester praise and worship

As they have done every week this semester, Liberty University students gathered for Campus Community on Wednesday night, but this time they filled the Academic Lawn outside the Montview Student Union. The service lasted well into the night.
Campus Community, part of Liberty’s spiritual development programs, is typically held in the Vines Center. The service provides the student body with a time of intentional worship and sound biblical teaching. This semester, messages have covered the apostle John’s three letters to the church.
During the service, Chancellor Jonathan Falwell told students he appreciated their willingness to give up their time at the end of the semester (final exams begin next week) to worship God, noting that several other universities around the country have instead seen students gather on their lawns for protests.
Falwell said the service was important in light of the passages they’ve been studying this semester and highlighted “how amazing it is that Liberty students come to our lawn, and what we do rather than attacking one another is lift up the name of the only One who is worthy of our praise, and that is Jesus Christ, King of kings, and Lord of lords.”
Falwell read from 3 John and urged students to remain grounded in their faith and daily commit to living their lives for Christ. He said regardless of one’s age or position at Liberty, everyone must make the decision whether they will serve God or themselves.
“This is a choice that we have to make. But understand it’s not a choice that we have to make once, but one we have to make every single day. Every day when we wake up and put our feet on the ground, we have to decide that on this day, no matter what I face, no matter what I come up against, no matter what situations I may have to navigate, I’m going to honor God, I’m going to serve Christ, I’m going to run after Him.”
Following the time of worship, Vice President for Spiritual Development Josh Rutledge invited students to take part in a 24-hour campus prayer event, the university’s second of the semester, which began at midnight in the Worley Prayer Chapel. The event, which included both music and Scripture reading, allowed students to continue the worship time that began earlier at Campus Community.
Liberty will host its last Convocation of the semester on Friday with a message from President Dondi Costin.

Nzasi, Shen Named 2025 Senior Class Marshals
The Student Experience Division has announced the selection of Mark Nzasi and Yifan “Ivan” Shen as the 2025 Senior Class Marshals. In this honorable role, Nzasi and Shen will lead their graduating class during Commencement, help to recommend the Commencement speaker, meet with senior University administrators to discuss their student experience and offer insights and suggestions, in addition to representing their class at Universitywide functions, networking with alumni and more.
“Woven throughout the tapestry of Nzasi’s and Shen’s undergraduate careers are their shared passions for academic excellence, campus involvement, personal development and community support. Serving as honorable representatives for the Class of 2025 will only further amplify a positive impact on the student experience now and into the future,” says Rob Hradsky , vice president for student engagement in Student Experience.
Mark Nzasi Joining the Orange community from Scranton, Pennsylvania, and starting his collegiate journey in Madrid, Spain, as a Discovery student, Nzasi is a junior majoring in neuroscience and psychology in the College of Arts and Sciences. His dedication to academics, service and leadership has been showcased early and often throughout his undergraduate career as an Invest in Success Scholarship recipient, through Dean’s List recognitions, as a participant in the Renée Crown University Honors Program and the Coronat Scholars Program, a 2024-25 Remembrance Scholar and through the Sanofi U.S. Scholarship, among other honors.
Nzasi eagerly awaits the opportunity to serve as a senior class marshal, representing the Class of 2025 and bridging connections between students, administration and the Orange community. “I would not be here today if not for my family and the incredible Orange community that’s supported me and always challenged me to be better each and every day. I’m excited to give back to this community and advocate for my peers,” he says.
As an aspiring physician, Nzasi has actively engaged in research and academic projects. His undergraduate research focuses on investigating the effects of maternal separation on adolescent CD-1 mice, aiming to shed light on the relationship between early-life adversity and the emergence of neurodevelopmental disorders such as schizophrenia, attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and depression. As a project aide, Nzasi contributes to the exploration of intricate cellular mechanisms, and their association with underlying human conditions such as degenerative eye diseases, to develop interventions to mitigate disease progression.
Outside of the classroom, Nzasi has immersed himself into a variety of student experiences including serving as the Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc., Theta Xi vice president, implementing health care initiatives and promoting representation in medicine through the Black Pre-Medical Society, and as an orientation leader.
During his time as a member of the Black Honors Society, he was the professional development chair and co-founder of the University’s first student-organized Black Excellence Gala, a celebration of the remarkable achievements of Black students and students of Afro-descent on campus. He also supports and or is a member of the Our Time Has Come Scholarship, Men of Color Initiative (MCI) and the Louis Stokes Alliance for Minority Participation (LSAMP).
As an active member within the larger Syracuse and global communities and fueled through his passion for hands-on clinical experience, Nzasi gives back through volunteer experiences. Highlights include Riina Education for Innovation, empowering African refugee women through English as a Second Language (ESL) tutoring, and leveraging his immigrant background and Swahili language skills to facilitate learning and essential computer skills. He served in Global Medical Brigades, assisting in sustainable clinical stations such as triage, dentistry and public health education. In his homeland, at Kitui County Referral Hospital of Kenya, he shadowed physicians during emergency surgeries and provided crucial support. Volunteering at Dr. King Elementary School and as a Sigma Beta Club mentor at Nottingham High School, Nzasi has exemplified his commitment to making a positive impact.
Reflecting on his journey, Nzasi draws inspiration from his roots in Kenya and the sacrifices his family made to find better opportunities in the United States. “As someone who believes in the ideal that representation is the lens through which we dream, I applied to be a senior class marshal as a testimony to show others that they don’t have to succumb to the stories that society places on them,” shares Nzasi. “I aim to utilize this platform to empower all minority youth, regardless of their background, to recognize that with belief in themselves, they can accomplish anything they set their minds to.”
Yifan “Ivan” Shen Hailing from Shanghai, China, Shen is a junior pursuing dual majors of architecture in the School of Architecture and music history and cultures in the College of Arts and Sciences, in addition to a vocal performance minor in the Setnor School of Music.
Academic highlights include being named a 2024-25 Remembrance Scholar, Dean’s List recognitions and being a member of the Renée Crown University Honors Program. He is a recipient of the Asian Design Award, Alfred L. Kaskel Scholarship, Peter J. Moore Award for Excellence in Architecture Sketching, the Doug Whitney ’80 School of Architecture Global Experience Award and the Maxwell Citizenship Scholarship.
Through immersive learning and a dedication to research, Shen has placed his knowledge into action globally. Across continents he has worked with award-winning offices in Madrid, Kigali (Rwanda), New York City and Shanghai. Highlights of his contributions further include exhibitions, journal publications and supporting peers as a tutor and teaching assistant.
“I attended local schools under the communist regime in China and constantly faced shocks politically, culturally and interpersonally in foreign environments. My years at Syracuse University witnessed the possibility of a non-fluent English speaker from a totally different background becoming a campus leader,” shares Shen. “Being selected as a senior class marshal demonstrates the University leadership’s success in making the campus an inclusive environment where international students like me can find ways to grow and thrive.”
As a senior class marshal, Shen hopes to continue to support peers through inspiration and action. “I am excited to demonstrate to my fellow students that your identity does not limit what you can achieve. By showing them the capacities they possess and the opportunities the University provides, I hope to inspire more students to become as involved as I am.”
Reflecting on his own experience as an international student, Shen co-founded the International Mentor Squad (IMS), organizing events to further help international students who were nervous about branching out to make friends and merge into the community. He has been an active member of the School of Architecture Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Accessibility Committee, a founding member of Architecture’s Honors Society, National Organization of Minority Students design team chair, member of the Hendricks Chapel Choir and member of the School of Architecture social media team. As a Hendricks Chapel Sunday Mass cantor, Syracuse Abroad Global Ambassador and more, Shen further supports others.
