Ancelotti: new Real Madrid coach's presentation, press conference

William Allen

Ancelotti presented as Real Madrid head coach: as it happened

Some selected quotes:.

Zinedine Zidane: “Everyone has to be thankful to Zizou. What he did [as Real Madrid coach] was incredible."

Sergio Ramos’ contract situation: “I’ve only just arrived and I’ll have to talk about that with the club in the coming days. I couldn't imagine a Real Madrid without Ancelotti, but it happened."

Eden Hazard: “He hasn’t reached his potential here, but I think he will.”

Gareth Bale: “If he's motivated, he can have a great season.”

Goals: “Benzema needs to score 50, not 30. Vinicius needs to score more goals. We need more goals from the rest."

Real Madrid return: “When the president called me, I had no doubts.”

Backroom team: "We’re going to decide the coaching staff in the coming days."

Signings: “We haven’t had time to talk about that, it’s all happened so fast."

Squad: "We have a quality squad, [but] we have to cut it down a bit."

Another picture of Ancelotti putting pen to paper:

And with that, Ancelotti's first press conference as Real Madrid's new head coach is over!

Criticism: “Everyone knows the aim at Real Madrid: to win LaLiga, the Champions League and the Copa del Rey. That’s the aim. Criticism is normal. This is the most followed club in the world. Coaching the biggest club in the world is a huge responsibility and at times things don’t go as you’d like. But the main thing is to respect people: the players, the coaches, the journalists…”

Allegri and Conte: “They’re coaches who have won things at big clubs. Conte has won Serie A. Allegri has won a lot at Juventus. Comparing me with these two friends of mine is nice to hear.”

Cristiano: “He hasn’t sent me a message.”

Did you understand what Zidane was saying in his open letter and did you have doubts about returning to Real Madrid after reading it? “I don’t know the relationship Zidane had with the president, so it’s hard for me to answer that question. But when the president called me, I had no doubts.”

Interested in signing Cristiano Ronaldo? “I have a lot of affection for Cristiano, but I don’t like talking about players at other clubs. He has a contract at Juventus and I don’t think it’s right to talk about him if he has a contact with another club. I’m very happy to see him still doing very well at Juventus, scoring lots of goals.”

Zidane's open letter: “I’ve been in football for 40 years. In football, people talk. The players play football, the journalists report what happens. That’s all normal. I know this world very well, That’s what it’s like. We have to accept what happens. We have to respect everyone who works in this world: coaches, players, journalists.”

Hazard: “He’s a top player. He’s had problems - in his first year here he had a bad injury and hasn’t reached his potential here, but I think he will.”

Zidane: “What can I say about Zizou? He won three Champions Leagues and did a great job, and did a great job right to the end. He left and then came back, and did everything very well. Everyone has to be thankful to Zizou. What he did was incredible. I haven’t spoken to him yet, because it’s all happened so quickly. But I’m sure we’ll talk.”

Squad capable of winning silverware: “We can challenge for trophies with this squad. With this squad, without the players out on loan, Madrid got to the semi-finals of the Champions League and challenged for the league title.”

Bale: “Gareth didn’t play a lot in the Premier League last season, but he scored a lot of goals. He was very effective when he go this chance in recent games. I know him very well, and if he's motivated, he can have a great season. I have no doubts about that.”

Lack of goals: “Benzema needs to score 50, not 30. Vinicius needs to score more goals. We need more goals from the rest. The players I have have a lot of quality. I’m delighted to get the chance to coach Benzema again. He has improved a lot, he is assuming more responsibility. There are young players with big futures. it’s not only about signing players - it’s also about the rest scoring more goals.”

Sergio Ramos future: "It’s clear that Ramos is a very important player for Real Madrid. He has been a big part of the cub’s successes. We're going to talk with the player, but I don't know the details [of Ramos’ contract talks] because I’ve been in Liverpool."

Quality squad: "I think we have a very good squad, with a blend of experience - Kroos, Modric, Ramos, Bale, Benzema... - and a group of very young players with a lot of quality - Rodrygo, Vinicius, Valverde… Players who have shown the quality they have. So we have a quality squad. We have to cut it down a bit, and we’ll have to see how we do that."

Make-up of Ancelotti's backroom team: "We’re going to decide the coaching staff in the coming days."

Veterans in the squad: “I have lot of affection for Bale, for Isco, for Marcelo… They’re Real Madrid players and that motivates them. The only judge is the pitch. They have to train well and show the coach that they can play for Real Madrid.”

Signings: “We haven’t had time to talk about that, it’s all happened so fast […]. I’ve only said thanks to the president because it’s a big deal for me to be back here.”

Squad: “I haven’t spoken to the club about that yet. I know the squad well, I know the young players and the players coming back from loans. We have a lot of options. I want to assess everyone calmly. The first time I was here four young players from Castilla came in - Morata, Nacho, Casemiro and Jesé - and they did very well. And Carvaajhal came in from Bayer Leverkusen. Thanks to the enthusiasam of the young players and the experience of the older players, we did well.”

Playing style: “The tradition, the history of this club is try to play attacking football. I think football has changed in these five years. It’s now more intense, more organised, but the idea is always the same at Real Madrid. The football has to be attacking and spectacular.”

Sergio Ramos: “I’ve only just arrived and I’ll have to talk about that with the club in the coming days. I haven’t yet had the chance to talk about the players’ futures. I couldn't imagine a Real Madrid without Ancelotti, but it happened."

Responsibility: “Coaching Real Madrid is a big responsibility, but a nice one. You’re in charge of the best club in the world.”

Ancelotti: “I’m really happy to return here, to a club that i feel is my home. I’m going to put all my energy into doing what we did in the past. I have great memories of the two years i had here - the trophies, the relationship with everyone"

Out comes Ancelotti - press conference underway!

Real Madrid's director of institutional relations, Emilio Butragueño, welcomes Ancelotti: "It's a real plaesure to welcome you back to Real Madrid - you know that this is your home. Real Madrid and all its fans have so much affection for you, because your first spell at the club brought many moments of joy, most notably the sought-after 10th European Cup"

Ancelotti and Pérez shake on it

I'd have liked to see a fist-bump.

Here's a picture of Ancelotti signing on as Real Madrid boss:

"good luck to ancelotti - he's going to need it".

Former Real Madrid president Ramón Calderón, a chap who isn't known for heaping the club's current administration with praise, has tweeted the following welcome message to the Italian: " Good luck to Carlo Ancelotti on his return to our club. He's going to need it ."

Ancelotti signs on the dotted line

Real Madrid TV have just shown images of Carlo Ancelotti signing his three-year contract as Los Blancos' head coach, before posing for a handshake with club president Florentino Pérez.

As soon as we have pictures of that, we'll share them with you .

"Together again"

Following confirmation of his appointment as Real Madrid's head coach, Carlo Ancelotti took to Twitter not only to bid Everton adieu, but also to offer a message to Los Blancos' fans, posting a photo of the Madrid badge with the words "together again" .

Florentino uses Ancelotti to scrub out Zidane's exit

Here's former AS editor Alfredo Relaño's reaction to Real Madrid's appointment .

"Florentino has a certain authoritarian tendency," Relaño writes. "He tends to prefer those who, like Mourinho, don't get on with the players but are stern bosses - but it has been proven that the other ‘type’ is the one that works best for Los Blancos ."

Roncero: Ancelotti appointment "the best news the Real Madrid fans could receive"

Writing in this newspaper , here's what AS journalist and number-one Real Madrid fan Tomás Roncero had to say about Carlo Ancelotti's return to the Bernabéu:

" The best news the Real Madrid fans could receive after spending a few days of frustration because of the departure of Zinedine Zidane, the magician who delivered three straight Champions Leagues, was learning that Carlo Ancelotti, the coach who La Décima, is returning home . When Cadena SER’s Antón Meana first reported this on Monday night, I admit I didn’t really believe it - not because I didn’t like the idea of the Italian returning to the club, but, unfortunately, I felt there was no chance of his time at the club including a part two. But thankfully, the club have moved quickly to seal a deal with Carletto and with Everton that leaves everybody happy.

"Ancelotti’s return brings back unforgettable memories of that night in Lisbon, and he comes with that Del Bosque-esque character that has always blended well with Real Madrid’s traditional values and that made such a good impression on the Madrid supporters. There are no drawbacks to Ancelotti, despite his detractors’ determination to say he was too soft on the players. As he himself once said, 'A soft touch doesn’t win three European Cups.'

"The option of Conte terrified me (he seemed to me like a low-cost Mourinho), hiring Pochettino meant waging a war with PSG that would have hit Madrid’s hopes of signing Mbappé, and as for Raúl, who one day will take his place in the Bernabéu dugout - it’s best he continues to gain experience with Castilla until his time comes. Ancelotti guarantees a smooth transition that will make the shadow cast by Zidane less traumatic ."

Allegri

Who else was in the running for the Real Madrid job?

Ancelotti certainly doesn't seem to have been Real Madrid's first choice to step into Zidane's shoes. Los Merengues had originally been lining up Massimiliano Allegri to take over, only for Allegri to opt instead to return to Juventus in place of the sacked Andrea Pirlo.

Former Inter coach Antonio Conte was also considered , but Madrid were put off by his demands, both in terms of salary and investment in the transfer market.

Los Blancos had also cast admiring glances in the direction of Paris Saint-Germain boss Mauricio Pochettino , but when push came to shove were reluctant to cheese off the French club's owners and, in the process, endanger their planned summer swoop for PSG striker Kylian Mbappé .

Meanwhile, Real Madrid legend Raúl, who is currently in charge of the club's 'B' team, was a serious candidate for the Bernabéu dugout, but in the end the Madrid hierarchy felt it was too soon to promote the 43-year-old.

Ancelotti sacked in 2015 after second season brings no major silverware

In May 2015, Ancelotti was sacked by Real Madrid after failing to win a major trophy in his second season in charge - despite overseeing a sensational 22-game winning streak between September 2014 and January 2015.

Amid whisperings that Ancelotti was too chummy with the players and didn’t train them hard enough, club president Florentino Pérez decided the team needed "fresh impetus" and Rafa Benítez was brought in as the hard taskmaster who would whip those pesky slackers into shape. He lasted seven months .

Now, having won three Champions Leagues and two LaLigas under a coach who also had a close relationship with his players, Madrid appear to have considered Ancelotti's avuncular style to be a plus point; a coaching trait that will help ensure a smooth transition in the dugout . Ah, the vicissitudes of football.

Ancelotti rejoins the club he led to Champions League glory in 2014

Ancelotti returns to a club where, between 2013 and 2015, he won four trophies, most notably the 2013/14 Champions League . That European Cup triumph, the third of his coaching career, ended a 12-year wait for Real Madrid’s 10th continental crown, and was the first of four Champions Leagues won by Los Blancos over a five-year period.

Under Ancelotti, Madrid also won the 2013/14 Copa del Rey - thanks to THAT galloping Gareth Bale run at Mestalla - and the 2014 UEFA Super Cup and FIFA Club World Cup.

Ancelotti: "I have been presented with an unexpected opportunity"

Ancelotti, who returns for a second spell as Real Madrid boss, was the surprise choice announced yesterday by the club , who have been looking for a replacement for Zinedine Zidane since (and, let's face it, well before) the Frenchman confirmed his resignation as Madrid boss last week. The Italian has agreed a three-year contract .

He leaves Premier League club Everton, who he had led to a 10th-place finish last season, for what he has described as an "unexpected opportunity” .

" I would like to thank the Board of Directors, the players, and the Evertonians for the tremendous support they have all given me during my time at the Club ," Ancelotti said in a statement released by Everton last night. "I have complete respect for everyone associated with Everton and hope they can achieve the exciting opportunities they have in front of them.

"While I have enjoyed being at Everton I have been presented with an unexpected opportunity which I believe is the right move for me and my family at this time ."

Ancelotti unveiling to take place at Ciudad Real Madrid

Given that the Bernabéu is currently a construction site, we're not going to get the customary ceremony in the presidential box - instead, Ancelotti is to be unveiled at the club's Ciudad Real Madrid training ground , where Los Blancos have been playing their home games for the past year or so. What with covid and all that, Ancelotti's press conference will, as is the norm at the moment, be a Zoom affair .

Ancelotti unveiling: welcome

Hello! Welcome to our live coverage of Carlo Ancelotti’s unveiling as Real Madrid’s new head coach. As per Madrid’s statement yesterday , Ancelotti is to speak to the media at 6 pm local time (12 pm EDT), having signed his contract and posed for photos with the club’s president, Florentino Pérez , at an unspecified time shortly before then. Real Madrid TV’s coverage of the event begins at 5:30 pm (11:30 am EDT) , so it seems a safe bet that’s when the ball will get rolling.

On Soccer With Rory Smith

Is soccer’s model club actually … real madrid.

The club is strutting into a future different from the one envisioned by its president, Florentino Pérez. But its prospects are as bright as ever.

Real Madrid players in white uniforms pump their fists in the air in celebration.

By Rory Smith

Florentino Pérez had a contented smile on his face, and with good reason. He had just watched Spain and Brazil share a thrilling, freewheeling draw at the stadium he has expensively, lavishly, reappointed. Now, Pérez, Real Madrid’s all-powerful president, found himself in a whitewashed tunnel, presented — completely by chance, obviously — with his favorite kind of photo opportunity.

To one side stood Vinícius Júnior, Real Madrid’s standard-bearer and main event, dutifully introducing the man who pays his wages to his Brazil teammates. A little further along the corridor, hurrying to pay obeisance, was Rodrygo, another of Pérez’s employees.

But Pérez’s focus was on Endrick, the 17-year-old star-in-waiting who will complete his long-awaited move to the Santiago Bernabéu this summer. To say the two of them shared a conversation would be pushing it: In footage of their brief meeting , Endrick does not appear to speak. After a handshake, Pérez utters only one line, but it is perfect. “We’re waiting for you here,” he said.

Real Madrid has had Endrick lined up for some time: The club announced that it had reached an agreement to sign him from Palmeiras three days before the final of the 2022 World Cup. He would, as FIFA’s rules dictate, remain in Brazil, with the club that has sculpted him into the most coveted prospect in world soccer, until he turns 18 this July.

That kind of long-term planning feels just a little out of step with Real Madrid’s traditional modus operandi. The club identifies, correctly, as a titan, and — under Pérez’s stewardship, in particular — it has taken great pride in living the values associated with the classical definition of that term: impetuous, impulsive, irascible.

It fires coaches for failing to win the Champions League , signs players on the back of a stellar World Cup and airs a regular feature on its in-house television channel that has been interpreted as a pre-emptive attempt to influence and/or intimidate referees. Real Madrid has always been the sort of place that eats its own sons .

All of that remains hard-wired into the club’s fibers. In the past three years, Pérez has not only helped to concoct a Super League that was intended to reshape world soccer more to his liking, but defended it on a gaudy late-night talk show — a little like going on “Judge Judy” to announce the abolition of the five permanent members of the U.N. Security Council — and then continued to promote it even after it was savaged by, well, just about everyone else.

But there is little question that there is something different about the current incarnation of Real Madrid. The club has always regarded itself as being the biggest, most powerful, most glamorous, most famous team not just in soccer, but in sports as a whole. Now, it is possible to make the case that it should be regarded as the best run, too.

Its mildly absurd record in the Champions League bears that out. In the last decade, it has won the tournament the club cherishes most five times. Should Carlo Ancelotti’s team fall to Manchester City over the next two weeks, it would mark only the third time since 2010 that Real Madrid has not reached at least the semifinals of Europe’s showpiece competition.

A better gauge, though, is what will happen this summer. As well as Endrick, already anointed as the finest player of soccer’s new generation, Real Madrid is expected (at last) to sign Kylian Mbappé, the standout of the current one. They should be joined, too, by Alphonso Davies, the Bayern Munich and Canada left back.

All three deals showcase how adroitly Real Madrid now navigates the transfer market. Endrick is another special from Juni Calafat, the club’s recruitment chief, who has long been tasked with bringing the brightest prospects from around the world — and from South America in particular — to Madrid.

Mbappé has been a case study in patience, with Real Madrid by turns seducing the player and biding its time, slowly and carefully positioning itself as his only realistic route out of Paris St.-Germain, waiting until the economic conditions were right to sign a player currently employed by a club that is in effect an arm of a nation state.

Davies, too, is a masterpiece of patience: Real Madrid will present Bayern Munich with the choice of losing him for a fee this summer, or for nothing when his contract expires in 2025. Bayern will resent it, of course. But it is familiar enough with that sort of strong-arm method that it might, privately, applaud just a little, too.

It would not be the first club to admire — however begrudgingly — how well Real Madrid has adapted to a financial landscape that, as the Super League project demonstrated, seemed to have shifted against Europe’s old aristocrats.

Real Madrid does not have the money, for example, to bully Premier League teams into selling players, and so instead it signed Antonio Rüdiger from Chelsea on a free transfer. It retains an impressively productive academy — according to the analysis firm CIES, 97 of its graduates are playing professionally in Europe — but has also moved quickly to gobble up players like Eduardo Camavinga, Jude Bellingham and Aurelién Tchouaméni before they fall into English clutches.

The result is a club that, almost alone among the grand old teams of the continent, can look to the future with relish. Barcelona has mortgaged many tomorrows to pay for the sins of yesterday. Bayern Munich is about to hire its fourth coach in three years. Juventus is still reeling from the mass resignation of its board in 2022 amid allegations of fraudulent accounting.

Real Madrid, on the other hand, should next season be able to name a midfield of Camavinga, Tchouaméni and Bellingham, and a forward line of Rodrygo, Vinícius and Endrick. Quite where Federico Valverde fits in is anyone’s guess. It certainly does not feel like the club’s destiny rests on whatever Mbappé decides to do.

It may, in many ways, remain an old-fashioned club, run as a personal fief by an omnipotent president. It does not pretend to be as data-driven, as avowedly modern, as Manchester City or Liverpool or Brighton, and it most definitely does not, at any point, feel any need whatsoever to tell anyone how clever it is.

But it is difficult to escape the impression that of all the game’s traditional elite, Real Madrid is now the one that needs a Super League the least. It is true that this is not the reality Florentino Pérez hoped to occupy in the spring of 2024. He wanted it to change, irrevocably, to suit his club. The converse, though, seems to have worked just as well. He has his modern stadium. He has his cluster of stars. The world remains, as it always was, much to Real Madrid’s liking.

Emma Hayes and the Last Word

The end, for Emma Hayes, is in sight. Next weekend, her Chelsea team will take on Manchester United in the semifinal of the F.A. Cup. A few days later, it has a Champions League semifinal with Barcelona to contemplate. There are five games left in England’s Women’s Super League; if Chelsea wins them all, Hayes may depart for her new job, as coach of the United States, with a valedictory championship.

One, two or three of those trophies would be a fitting way for Hayes, the W.S.L.’s greatest-ever coach, to wave goodbye to a league she has done much to build. Over the last few weeks, though, the 47-year-old Hayes’s farewell tour has taken on a decidedly, but unexpectedly, contentious aspect.

First, she suggested that — from a coaching point of view — it might be less than ideal for teammates to be romantic partners. She quickly rowed back from those comments after it appeared they had stoked resentment both inside and outside her squad.

Then, last week, she shoved Jonas Eidevall , her Arsenal counterpart, and then accused him of exhibiting “ male aggression ” in confronting a Chelsea player during the Blues’ defeat in the Women’s League Cup final. There, a retraction — or even a clarification — seems less forthcoming, something that may be explained by the fact that Hayes is not the first coach to find Eidevall’s touchline demeanor a little abrasive.

Hayes is habitually frank. She is eloquent and unafraid in equal measure. That is, in part, what has allowed her to develop a profile beyond women’s soccer. In these past few weeks, though, she has exhibited an openness that borders on straight-shooting. The overriding impression is that she does not want to leave England without setting a few things straight.

If We’re Taking Ideas From America

Curious to note, this week, that the idea of a luxury tax is being floated by certain Premier League teams as a more palatable alternative to all these infernal points deductions. Well, that is how it is being dressed up, anyway: What is actually happening is that some of the league’s clubs are trying to find a method, effectively, to abolish financial regulation.

This is an increasingly popular stance, because the Premier League has allowed the idea that cost controls are in some way “unfair” to fester. It is, though, a disingenuous one.

Those clubs who want to allow the market to run riot do not want to level the playing field. They want, instead, to take one unpopular elite and replace it with another. The primary difference, of course, would be that this new one includes and favors them. Nobody is thinking in the slightest about collective fairness.

Still, the idea is out there, so let’s debunk it. A luxury tax has benefits in American sports. It would not work in England, partly because there is no salary cap, and partly because some of the teams are owned by nation states, making the idea of a financial penalty pretty laughable. They would pay it and go on their merry way, driving other clubs to the wall as they do.

If you want a truly “fair” Premier League, you need more financial regulation, not less. And, as discussed a little while ago, if you are to take inspiration from the U.S., the best place to start would be with a commissioner, complete with both office and powers, who can enforce those rules in real time.

Jude Bellingham poses for a photo during his unveiling at Real Madrid’s Valdebebas training ground

Jude Bellingham makes pitch-perfect start to epic adventure at Real Madrid

On first impressions, £88.5m signing has the charisma and self-assurance to be an instant hit at the Bernabéu

M ark Bellingham’s not crying, honest. There was a moment during Jude Bellingham’s presentation at Real Madrid, not long after he had stood up and offered his first, brief words in Spanish, when the cameras showed his father’s face and there was the tiniest hint of a tear, which well there might be.

His son, though, was not so sure. “I don’t know if it was just sweat, to be fair: he doesn’t cry often,” the 19-year-old said, another smile creeping across his face on a morning when there were many of them. “I’m going to have to watch it back closely and maybe give him some banter.”

If he does watch it back, he will see that his first performance as a Real Madrid player was flawless; the impact on everyone here immediate. And if his dad was crying, well, why not? That’s his son up there holding the No 5 shirt once worn by Zinedine Zidane, enjoying what he called the most important day of his life. “It means a lot to them because it means a lot to me,” Bellingham said. Denise and Mark had seen the whole thing through, too, this the culmination of their work as well as his. There had also been discussions with England teammates trying to convince him to play in the Premier League, with Gareth Southgate, Carlo Ancelotti and even briefly with Zidane, he revealed, but now it was done.

It had all started 15 months ago. “I had always been aware of interest from England, so that was pretty normal,” Bellingham said. “But it was a bit of a surprise when Dad sat me down and told me about Madrid. I got goosebumps, my heart was close to stopping. It’s just something you don’t expect, to be able to play for a team like this. So when it actually manifests itself, it’s an amazing feeling.”

When you actually turn up, even more so. Asked what had most struck him on his first day, Bellingham replied: “The room I signed the contract in has all 14 of the [European Cup] trophies. They’re staring at you and you can’t wait to get your hands on one.

Bellingham shows off his shirt number

“Lots of teams are interested in you,” he continued. “I don’t think about money: never have, never will. I play for pure love. I loved the feeling I got from the club, I told them almost straight away and I wanted it to happen quickly. It’s not the case that other teams are bad, it’s just that Real Madrid are the greatest. You grow up, watch games, and that’s what appealed to me. It has a great history and you want to be a player who adds to that. When they pitched the vision of the team, I was all in. It’s not just the fact that it’s Real Madrid – although that is enough – but the ideas they have, the respect they treated my family with. It was seamless. It’s so exciting.”

Not that the decision went unchallenged, of course. “At the World Cup, with the national team, it is hard,” Bellingham said. “They all wanted me to come back to England and play for their team but I like the idea of being out of my comfort zone. Maybe it’s easier to go back to the Premier League but I just couldn’t turn down Madrid. The exact moment it was done is hard to say, but I had the meeting when they came to my house and I was sold [on the idea], to be honest. The [2022] final when they beat Liverpool was a huge factor but there are a load of things that go into making the decision.”

Bellingham is presented to the media alongside Florentino Pérez, the Real Madrid president

That day in Paris, Bellingham had spoken to the man whose shirt he will wear. Actually, that’s not entirely true. The shirt he has belongs to Jesús Vallejo, or it did – and almost the first thing he did was say thanks, another of many small gestures that he handled well here. “I contacted him to see if that was OK and he was so nice about it,” Bellingham said. “In my heart I am still a 22, just wearing a five on the back. We’ll see in future what number I wear.” Then he revealed: “There was a little question [asked of] Zidane in the final. I didn’t want to make it too obvious. If he had let me, I would have talked his ear off. It’s a big honour to wear his number.”

A big pressure too? If so, it didn’t show. “I know the demands are great but I think it’s a brilliant responsibility and I will embrace that. When you play in a professional environment with grown men from 15, 16 you learn to grow up faster,” he said, a smoothness, a confidence, an ease about him, every response pitch perfect. There was enthusiasm and openness too, this whole adventure seen not as something to fear but to embrace. It may help internationally as well, Bellingham talking about how he could give England “a different football culture, a different style”, while his teammates can bring the “Premier League side”. That suits Southgate: “I spoke to Gareth quite a bit recently and he has always been so supportive. He texted me this morning to wish me well.

'The proudest day of my life': Jude Bellingham unveiled by Real Madrid – video

“I have had a little bit of contact with Ancelotti and he’s an amazing coach: his CV, his record, speaks for itself. It’s a brilliant opportunity to work with one of the greatest coaches there has been and I’m really looking forward to it. I am a midfielder who can do a bit of everything, whatever the manager asks for. I’ll do it with no fuss, anything to help the team really. And working with [Luka] Modric and [Toni] Kroos is invaluable, unbelievable for their knowledge of the game, their experience, the way they play. I will try to steal everything they have got. They’ll probably get annoyed with me for the first week.”

He neatly dribbled round inquiries on Harry Kane and Kylian Mbappé. That was “none of my business”, he said, while describing the Englishman as “a world-class player, my captain with the national team; I love him as a player and a person”, and replying to the inevitable question about wanting to play with the Frenchman with a simple: “Who wouldn’t?” He said he didn’t even know the exact amount he had cost, and didn’t much care either: “I am a footballer, not a lawyer or an accountant and it is my job to take my football on to the pitch.” As for the No 5, well, he insisted: “This [Madrid] shirt is enough responsibility in itself. Maybe for you guys I have put myself in an uncomfortable position but for me it is just a bit of a homage.”

“I’m just trying to be Jude,” Mark and Denise Bellingham’s son said, and on this evidence that will do very nicely.

Real Madrid’s roof will be closed against Man City: Why? What impact will it have? Is this normal?

Picture shows a general view of the Santiago Bernabeu stadium with its operable roof closed due to the rainy weather ahead of the Spanish Liga football match between Real Madrid CF and Getafe CF in Madrid on September 2, 2023. Real Madrid ’s match against Manchester City will look very different to the average European football match — and even to other matches at the Bernabeu.

Why? Well, on Tuesday, Madrid received permission from UEFA to close the relatively new roof for the game this evening. This will be an oddity to most football fans — only a few football-ready stadiums in Europe have retractable roofs.

But why have Madrid asked to close the roof? Does playing sports in an indoor stadium have a noticeable effect on the game compared to an outdoor stadium? And how do City feel about it?

Here, The Athletic’s  Guillermo Rai, Amitai Winehouse, Mario Cortegana and Sam Lee explain the situation and what it all means.

Why have Madrid asked to close the roof?

This one is quite simple. Tuesday night’s game is huge — it’s a Champions League quarter-final first leg, and Madrid are looking for any advantage to take into the return fixture at the Etihad Stadium.

There is a thought that closing the roof improves the atmosphere in the ground. Madrid have a raucous fanbase and increasing the noise from them would benefit the team against City.

UEFA, in conjunction with match referee Francois Letexier, has approved the closing of the roof for the game. Madrid cannot open the roof once the game has kicked off, unless there is severe weather that means they have to.

When was the roof installed and have they closed it before?

Madrid have been carrying out an extensive renovation of the Bernabeu since 2019. They have increased capacity to 85,000 and improved the facilities at the ground, all for a cost that stands at €1.76billion ($1.91bn, £1.51bn).

One major addition has been the roof, which was finally ready for use at the start of this season.

Madrid have used it several times since. The first was the 2-1 win over Getafe in September, which was also Jude Bellingham ’s home debut for the Spanish giants. He scored the winning goal in stoppage time .

They closed the roof for the 1-1 draw against RB Leipzig last month, which saw them advance in the Champions League courtesy of a 2-1 aggregate win. It was also shut for the 1-1 draw with Atletico Madrid in February and for the 4-1 win over Villarreal in December among other La Liga games — Madrid do not have to ask the league for permission to do so, which is a key difference to the Champions League.

Which other football stadiums in Europe have retractable roofs?

Only a handful of major stadiums in Europe have retractable roofs.

Schalke’s Veltins-Arena, Romania’s National Arena, the Friends Arena in Sweden, Vitesse Arnhem’s GelreDome, the Johan Cruyff Arena in Amsterdam and Zenit Saint Petersburg’s Gazprom Arena have retractable roofs.

There are also roofs at the Merkur Spiel-Arena — of Fortuna Dusseldorf — Denmark’s Parken Stadium, Lille’s Stade Pierre-Mauroy, the Stadion Narodowy in Warsaw, Stockholm’s Tele2 Arena and Deutsche Bank Park in Frankfurt.

The Millennium Stadium, which is primarily used for rugby union, has a retractable roof — more on that in a bit. And there are four tennis stadiums with retractable roofs — Centre Court and No 1 Court at Wimbledon, OWL Arena in Halle, Germany, and Stade Roland Garros.

How does closing a roof impact other grass sports?

The most comparable sport regularly played in a closed-roof stadium is probably the NFL . There are 10 stadiums in that league that either have fixed roofs or retractable ones.

There has always been a sense that indoor stadiums lead to more points being scored. As The Athletic ’s Hannah Vanbiber explained in January — before this year’s Super Bowl at the domed Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas — indoor Super Bowls tend to a bit higher scoring than outdoor ones , with outdoor Super Bowls averaging 44.6 points. But the first 11 Super Bowls were outdoors, and many early Super Bowls were low-scoring.

Using Super Bowl XII, the first indoor Super Bowl, as a starting point, outdoor games have averaged 49.7 points per game since then , which is more than indoor games.

The small sample size and different eras render these stats largely meaningless, but it may fight against the theory that indoor venues are ripe for many points.

There is also the case of Jared Goff, the Detroit Lions quarterback. As of January this year, he had a 69 per cent pass completion rate in indoor venues, with a 64.5 per cent pass completion rate at outdoor venues. Playing indoors had an impact on him.

Since the All England Lawn Tennis Club installed its roof at Wimbledon’s Centre Court, there has been a sense that it has impacted the air in the venue and made the ball move slower.

presentation about real madrid

In 2011, Professor Steve Haake of Sheffield Hallam University’s department of sports engineering said to the Daily Mail : “The roof closes when it rains, and it takes 10 minutes to do so — that means the grass will still be damp.

“This could fluff up the ball, because the balls pick up the moisture from the ground. Even a small increase in its size will make it less aerodynamic and therefore slower. That would be the major factor.

“Changes in temperature and humidity will also affect the flight of the ball.

“The colder the air, the thicker it becomes, and the slower the ball will travel. A drop of 5C (41F) in temperature increases the air density by two per cent.”

He also explained that a lack of breeze also causes an issue with perspiration, as sweat will not evaporate as quickly. This makes players feel like it is more “hot and humid” than it really is. Wimbledon has an “air management” system designed to mitigate this, which is configured to emulate normal grass court tennis as closely as possible. In New York and Melbourne, at the U.S. Open and Australian Open, roof closures have recently protected players not from rain and humidity, but from extreme heat by providing shade over the court.

Is there any controversy around closing roofs at stadiums?

Yes. Going back to the Millennium Stadium, there are always huge issues around closing the stadium roof, especially for the bigger games during the rugby calendar.

There have to be very specific conditions for the roof to be used. For Six Nations games, both sides have to agree on whether they want it closed or not before it can be closed. This can cause off-pitch tension before the match.

There is also a sense that the atmosphere benefits from the roof being closed — which can often be seen as a reason one team will not want the roof to be in use.

For example, this February, Wales head coach Warren Gatland expressed anger at Scotland ’s desire to keep the roof open despite rain being forecast, suggesting it was part of a plan to limit the impact of the Welsh crowd. In turn, Scotland head coach Gregor Townsend claimed that the ball can become “greasy” if the roof is closed.

What have sports stars said about playing at stadiums with roofs?

Former England flanker James Haskell admitted that there was a clear impact from closing the roof at the Millennium Stadium when his side played Wales.

He said the atmosphere was much more powerful, and told WalesOnline : “If the roof is closed and you’re 10 metres from the Welsh line, or they’re 10 metres from your line, the noise becomes so oppressive it’s like a force on top of you.”

presentation about real madrid

In tennis, the most notable recent match was the 2023 women’s Wimbledon final between Marketa Vondrousova and Ons Jabeur. The roof was closed pre-match — rather than the usual change of weather necessitating it — due to high winds.

Vondrusova, who won, said: “I was really happy they closed the roof because it’s very different than in the windy weather.

“The roof can help you with serve. You don’t have to focus on the wind so much. I feel like everything is the same on every side. You just have to focus on the game, not on the wind, not even on the sun.”

Most tennis players prefer to use the roof as little as possible, despite the weather, because they are fundamentally meant to be outdoor events.

How do City feel?

City manager Pep Guardiola seemed pretty blase when asked on Monday. He said: “I’m curious to see it. It’s curious because I’ve never seen it at a game — maybe for pre-season in the United States at some point — but in an official game I’ve never seen it and I’m looking forward to it.

“Last year, it was almost finished, is it (finished) now? (Reporter: Yes, it’s finished, it’s going to be played with the closed roof.) It’s good we’re going to see it.”

When asked after the roof closure was confirmed on Tuesday, City said they had no outlook on it.
