The 8 Biggest Takeaways From Tesla's 2023 Investor Day

Tesla hosted its annual Investor Day today, spelling out the company's prerogatives and initiatives to a gathered in-person and live-streamed crowd. During the presentation, company executives, including CEO Elon Musk , spelled out their thoughts on eliminating fossil fuels and using a new electric vehicle platform, and gave insights into coming models.

Here's eight of the most interesting things presented at the event.

Tesla has a plan to eliminate fossil fuels.

"My personal opinion is, as we improve the energy density of batteries, you'll see all transportation go fully electric, with the exception of rockets," Musk told the assembled in-person and live stream audience.

The plan calls for repowering the existing power grid with renewables, at a total cost of $10 trillion USD. The company projects that this will cause a 35 percent reduction in fossil fuel use.

Switching to electric vehicles, Tesla says, will reduce fossil fuels a further 21 percent. This vehicle switchover, Tesla estimates, needs $7.0 trillion of the $10.0 trillion to occur.

"All cars will go to fully autonomous and electric," Musk predicts, likening riding in a gas-powered non-autonomous car to, "be analogous to riding a horse and using a flip phone."

Tesla is also advocating for switching to heat pumps for homes and businesses to save on fossil fuel use. While much of the southern United States already uses this technology, most in the United States' snow belt still use furnaces that run on natural gas, heating oil or propane.

Tesla Semi forward face

High temperature heat delivery, hydrogen use and sustainably fueling planes and boats were part of the last part of the plan with the proposition that hydrogen use is able to take the place in coal in much of modern manufacturing applications.

"It is my personal opinion that hydrogen will not be used meaningfully in transport... and shouldn't be. If you're going to use a chemical fuel, use CH4 [methane], not H2 [hydrogen]," Musk said.

Toyota, BMW and Hyundai Motor Group are already invested in making hydrogen-powered vehicles, including tractor trailers.

Tesla is planning two more models to make up its global electric vehicle fleet.

In addition to the Model S, Model 3, Model X, Model Y, Cybertruck and Semi shown on stage during the presentation, Tesla showed off two future models under digital silks. One looked like a chunky SUV akin to a Jeep Wrangler or Ford Bronco. The other appeared to be a small car, sized to fit below the Model 3 in the company's lineup.

2020 Tesla Model 3 sedan blue

Tesla claims a Model 3 is more efficient than a Toyota Corolla.

The company says that its small car is four times more efficient from "oil well to wheel" than Toyota's small car. Much of this, the company says, comes from how the energy is transferred to the Model 3, and stored, when compared to the engine in the Corolla.

Model 3 can, "drive one mile on the energy it takes to boil a pot of water for pasta," Tesla's senior vice president of powertrain and energy engineering Drew Baglino claims, "and another mile on the energy it takes to cook the pasta."

Cybertruck is coming this year.

Though the date of the manufacturing of Tesla's Cybertruck has been pushed back several times, company officials confirmed their plans to bring the car to market in 2023.

Tesla wants to remake the manufacturing process.

Traditionally (and generally) a mass production vehicle is built by first stamping the metal, then gathering all the parts for the body, then painting it, then going through a final assembly process.

pTesla giga factory Berlin Brandenburg can start operating in Germany. (Courtesy of Tesla, Inc./Zenger)/p

"What's interesting is that these shops are dictated by the organizational structures that exist, and they're dictated by the boundaries that exist in the factories that are laid out. If something goes wrong in Final Assembly, you have to stop the whole line and you end up with buffering in between," Lars Moravy, Tesla's vice president of vehicle engineering, said on stage.

"Henry Ford first invented this assembly line in 1922. It's been a hundred years and it's really hard to make a change after a hundred years."

The company is set on "rethinking manufacturing again" with their next-generation vehicle. That plan sees more individuals, or robots, working on a vehicle at once, decreasing down time. Tesla estimates that this new method will be a 30 percent improvement in space time efficiency.

In the future, Tesla plans to have parallel tracts for stamping and painting, and casting. This means that all sides of the car will be constructed independently, only painting what is needed, then the exterior and interior bits are put together in place before finally being joined together when the powertrain, glass, etc.

Tesla plans to reduce its manufacturing footprint by more than 40 percent with the next generation of vehicles, and decrease the cost of creating the model by 50 percent.

Tesla Electric Vehicles Elon Musk Record Profits

Tesla has opened its Supercharger sites to other vehicles.

The company's charging head, Rebecca Tinucci confirmed during the confidence that yesterday the company opened its first 10 charging sites to other automobiles. This is part of a larger promise the company has made to make their heralded charging network more accessible.

Currently over 50 percent of the company's European Superchargers are open to vehicles from other manufactures.

In the last six months, Tesla's service department has gotten better.

There has been an 11 percent drop in the time it takes to service a vehicle and 16 percent decrease in early service in the last half-year. It also now takes 9 percent less time to get a service appointment.

New battery cell and vehicle manufacturing facilities announcements are coming.

As Tesla looks to introduce new vehicles and boost output, the company plans to open new manufacturing facilities. Their locations, size and output will be announced at a later date.

PowerPoint Makeovers: The Tesla Investor Presentation

PowerPoint Makeovers: The Tesla Investor Presentation

It’s hard to believe that a company so successful as Tesla didn’t even exist 20 years ago. Sure enough, though, Tesla, Inc. was founded in 2003 by two California engineers, Martin Eberhard and Marc Tarpenning. Yes, that’s right. Now world-famous CEO Elon Musk didn’t join the team until 2004 when he invested $30 million into the fledgling company.

With the introduction of its Roadster, Tesla offered an entirely electric car that was practical enough to meet consumer needs. After launching in 2008, the Roadster’s success set the stage for what was to come for Tesla. After multiple funding rounds, the company went public in 2010, when its IPO raised $226 million.

Shortly after its successful IPO, Tesla prepared for the release of its game-changing Model S, which it introduced to investors during a 2011 meeting. That now-famous slide deck was plenty informative, and it offered a variety of photos, diagrams and infographics. It also included entirely too much information on most of its slides and too much text to be consumed easily by audiences.

While Tesla’s 2011 investor presentation deck did its job, we couldn’t help but wonder if we couldn’t have designed a better slideshow using Beautiful.ai’s PowerPoint alternative presentation design software . What do you think of our PowerPoint makeover ?

We started our PowerPoint makeover by customizing the theme that will ultimately apply to each slide in the presentation. When selecting the color palette of the slide deck , as well as the topography and styles, we chose options that complement Tesla’s branded style guide . The bold colors and consistency add pizzazz and unity to the presentation that the original lacked.

Slide 1: Tesla Title Slide

Every effective slide deck needs a title slide, where the presenter will introduce the presentation. Tesla’s original deck included a title slide, but we weren’t exactly impressed by it. We started our redesigned slide deck out with a bang by customizing Beautiful.ai’s Headline smart slide template .

We chose a slide layout that included an image, and we found a free stock photo of a Tesla car from the platform’s vast image library. We simply searched for, “Tesla,” and immediately we were presented with an assortment of eye-catching photos. From there, we simply added an additional photo box, but this time we chose a Tesla logo— also from Beautiful.ai’s image library.

presentation tesla

Slide 2: Best of Silicon Valley

We next chose Beautiful.ai’s Team Members smart slide template to introduce Tesla’s key players. Instead of the busy grid full of logos, we imported headshot photos of the Tesla team members. We simply expanded the list to introduce eight individuals, and we added a bold banner matching the slide deck’s thematic color scheme so the overall slide pops.

presentation tesla

Slide 3: Engineering Team Growth

The next slide in Tesla’s 2011 investor presentation featured an infographic illustrating the company’s recent growth. We love a good infographic, but we wanted to improve on the original. We selected Beautiful.ai’s Column chart smart slide template , where we edited the X and Y axis and entered our data. The platform’s artificial intelligence automatically designed the perfect infographic in our branded color scheme.

presentation tesla

Slide 4: Early Partners

Who were Tesla’s early partners, and what role did they play in the company’s journey toward success? Tesla’s original presentation deck highlighted Toyota, Panasonic and Daimler on three separate slides, each extremely cluttered with detailed text, photos and infographics— entirely too much information for any single slide.

In our redesigned deck, we consolidated the three partners to a single Photos with Text smart slide template , where we easily added each company’s logo found in our image library.

presentation tesla

Slide 5: Ikoma Quotation

One element of Tesla’s original 2011 investor presentation deck we particularly appreciated was a quotation from Panasonic CTO Munhesa Ikoma. We dedicated an entire slide to this insightful statement, using Beautiful.ai’s Quotes smart slide template . All we had to do was edit the layout, moving the image to the right as we input the quotation.

presentation tesla

Slide 6: Roadster Leading the Way

It’s no secret that the Tesla Roadster led the way to the company’s overall success. Tesla’s original slide deck was again busy and cluttered without any sort of cohesive design. We quickly and easily redesigned the slide using our Photo grid smart slide template , which we adjusted to contain just three cells— one for a heading, one for a bulleted list and the third for another Tesla image found in Beautiful.ai’s impressive library of free stock photos.

presentation tesla

Slide 7: Introducing the Model S

Tesla’s biggest development of 2011 was the unveiling of the Tesla Model S beta prototype. The news was generating enough buzz to dedicate an entire slide in the investor presentation to introducing the long-awaited electric vehicle. We redesigned the slide to boldly reflect the excitement of the prototype’s release by customizing our Headline smart slide template , using another free stock image as the slide’s background.

presentation tesla

Slide 8: A Class of Its Own

The next two slides in Tesla’s 2011 investor presentation deck detail the features and performance record of the Model S. By choosing Beautiful.ai’s Carousel smart slide template, we were able to add a common heading to the slide, then add separate images and text for each phase of the carousel.

presentation tesla

Slide 9: Model S Reservations

Tesla next detailed its cumulative Model S reservations as of the time of the spring presentation. While we admire the company’s reliance on infographics, we knew we could make the chart more eye-catching and engaging.

We replaced the classic bar graph with Beautiful.ai’s Radial Bar Chart smart slide template. After adding a bold text box to the left of the slide’s layout, we simply selected the appropriate number of bars for our infographic before entering the corresponding data for each. Voila! Before our very eyes, AI designed a professional-level infographic .

presentation tesla

Slide 10: Market Opportunity

To illustrate Tesla’s market opportunities, we selected our Hub and Spoke smart slide template and rotated the icons to form a diamond shape. Then, we added a photo to the center box, while we sought corresponding icons from our image library to illustrate each of the spokes. We then made our redesigned slide pop by shading the background with a thematic hue.

presentation tesla

Slide 11: Model S Progress

Beautiful.ai’s Process diagram smart slide template was the perfect choice to illustrate Tesla’s progress toward the ultimate launch of its Model S. The infographic automatically was customized to match our branded theme, and we simply entered a list in each corresponding text box. We finished off the redesigned slide by adjusting the format to feature another Tesla photo as a left sidebar.

presentation tesla

Slide 12: Fremont Facility Details

Tesla included a rough diagram of its Fremont facility where the Model S would be manufactured. Instead of trying to recreate the drawing, we imported the image and added it to Beautiful.ai’s classic slide template , which lets users design a slide from scratch, much like is required by traditional presentation software such as PowerPoint.

presentation tesla

Slide 13: Strategic Asset Purchases

Tesla illustrated its strategic asset purchases through a series of photos. We thought we could improve upon the original slide with a more cohesive design, so we chose Beautiful.ai’s Photo Grid smart slide template . We then adjusted the number and position of the cells, before we added photos to some and changed others to text boxes.

presentation tesla

Slide 14: Fremont Facility Plans

In its original 2011 investor presentation deck, Tesla also highlighted its short-term plans for its Fremont facility. We imported another diagram, which we added to an Image smart slide template , selecting a layout with two cells. We then changed one cell to a text box, and added the appropriate details.

presentation tesla

Slide 15: Tesla Closing Slide

Every visual presentation needs a strong closing slide to leave a lasting impression on audiences and provide the presenter with a placeholder to tie up any loose ends.

We created an eye-catching closing slide for our redesigned presentation by customizing another Image smart slide template. After selecting a colorful photo of a Tesla found in our free image library, and then adding the Tesla logo as a separate image on top of the first.

presentation tesla

What do you think of our redesigned presentation? Did we improve upon Tesla’s original slide deck? Is our presentation engaging and memorable? Is our design cohesive and Tesla’s message clear? Is our slide deck, “beautiful?”

Tesla Investor Day 2023: all the news and announcements from Elon Musk’s next ‘Master Plan’ event

By Andrew J. Hawkins , transportation editor with 10+ years of experience who covers EVs, public transportation, and aviation. His work has appeared in The New York Daily News and City & State.

Tesla held its first-ever Investor Day event on March 1st at the Austin, Texas-based Gigafactory. The company’s CEO, Elon Musk, revealed the third part of his “Master Plan,” which outlined ways that Tesla would reduce its manufacturing costs and grow to “extreme size.”

Tesla has been buffeted by questions around demand, price, and management — especially in the wake of Musk’s disastrous acquisition of Twitter. But after steep stock declines in 2022, the company appears to be on more solid footing. Tesla slashed the prices for its popular Model 3 and Model Y by as much as 20 percent , which seemed to help attract more customers.

Also, Musk is coming off the heels of a victory of sorts: a California jury found that he was not liable for billions of dollars in damages as a result of his infamous “funding secured” tweet from 2018.

This is where you can find all the news from Tesla’s Investor Day, so be sure to check back as more stories are published.

Tesla confirms its next Gigafactory will be in Mexico

Unfinished Tesla model Y vehicles on factory assembly line platforms, no bumpers or headlights attached yet.

Tesla CEO Elon Musk has announced that the company is building its next Gigafactory in Mexico, where it will build a next-generation vehicle. The news came during the live Q&A sessions after Tesla’s Investor Day event, where it announced its Master Plan part three .

During the event, Musk revealed that the facility will be built in the Mexican state of Nuevo León, which shares a small border with Texas — home of Tesla’s Austin Gigafactory. Yesterday, Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador  confirmed the project will be built in the city of Monterrey, which is about 387 miles away from Tesla’s headquarters in Austin.

Elon Musk unveils a new Master Plan, a path to sustainable energy future, but no new cars

Elon Musk revealed the third part of Tesla’s “Master Plan,” in which the company will lead the global effort to eliminate fossil fuels and convert the world to sustainable energy. The plan was outlined during an investor event Wednesday held at the company’s Gigafactory in Austin, Texas.

Master Plan 3 includes adding renewable power to the existing grid, producing more electric vehicles, installing heat pumps in homes and buildings, using high-temperature heat delivery and hydrogen for industrial applications, and building sustainably fueled planes and boats. Musk’s plan is to create “a sustainable energy civilization.”

Tesla is holding its first-ever Investor Day event at its Gigafactory in Austin, Texas, during which Elon Musk is expected to unveil the third iteration of the company’s “Master Plan.” The event will be livestreamed on YouTube and Twitter , but just in case you don’t feel like subjecting yourself to Musk’s stereotypical bluster, you’ll want to follow The Verge ’s live blog for all the announcements and updates.

Tesla stopped inviting members of the mainstream press to its event right after the Cybertruck reveal in 2019. It was around the same time that the company disbanded its media relations department, leaving Musk’s Twitter account (and a sporadically updated blog) as the sole outlet for information about Tesla.

Tesla’s new ‘Master Plan’ is coming — let’s grade the first two

MEXICO-US-TRANSPORT-INVESTMENT-TESLA

The third installment of Elon Musk’s “Master Plan” for Tesla will be revealed March 1st during an Investor Day event held at the company’s Austin, Texas-based Gigafactory. Musk has said that it will outline “the path to a fully sustainable energy future for Earth,” adding that “the future is bright!”

That sounds nice, but before we can usher in this new era of sustainable energy, we need to contend with the successes and failures of Tesla’s previous two “Master Plans.” Did Musk accomplish what he set out to do? Or did his ambitions get the better of him? How well did Musk master his own plans?

How to watch Tesla’s 2023 Investor Day event

Tesla’s first Investor Day event is today, at which Elon Musk will pull back the curtain on the company’s third “Master Plan.” It’s a sequel to a 2016 blog post in which Musk said the company would expand its EV offerings to more vehicle segments and make them autonomous.

The third plan is expected to include “the path to a fully sustainable energy future for Earth,” Musk wrote on Twitter .

Robotaxis, cheap EVs, and a new master plan for the future: what to expect at Tesla’s Investor Day

Tesla is convening its first Investor Day event on March 1st at its Gigafactory in Austin, Texas, at which Elon Musk is expected to unleash upon the world his latest Master Plan for the company’s future. Expectations are high, but given Musk’s penchant for leaving past Master Plan promises unfulfilled , keeping those expectations in check may be a wise move.

Musk has said the event is for “people and life of earth,” adding that “it will be a message of good hope & positivity for the future.” That certainly sounds affirming, but the reality facing Musk and Tesla today undercuts a lot of the optimism of that message.

Tesla releases new deep-dive presentations on its Dojo AI supercomputer

Avatar for Fred Lambert

Tesla has released two new deep-dive presentations into its Dojo AI supercomputer ahead of its upcoming AI Day 2.

You can check the slides from both presentations below.

Dojo is Tesla’s own custom supercomputer platform built from the ground up for AI machine learning and more specifically for video training using the video data coming from its fleet of vehicles.

The automaker already has a large NVIDIA GPU-based supercomputer that is one of the most powerful in the world, but the new Dojo custom-built computer is using chips designed by Tesla.

The custom-built supercomputer is expected to elevate Tesla’s capacity to train neural nets using video data, which is critical to its computer vision technology powering its self-driving effort.

Last year, at  Tesla’s AI Day , the company unveiled  its Dojo supercomputer , but the company was still ramping up its effort at the time. It only had its first chip and training tiles, and it was still working on building a full Dojo cluster or “Exapod.”

Tesla’s AI Day 2 is coming up on September 30, and the automaker is expected to give an update on its Dojo program, but it has now given an update ahead of the event.

Tesla’s Dojo team gave two presentations at the Hot Chip event this week that are likely to preview some of what the company will discuss next month at AI Day.

Serve The Home shared the slides from the two presentations, which you can see below. The info is quite “inside baseball” on the system architecture side and requires some technical knowledge to appreciate, but I thought it would be worth sharing here for those who can appreciate it.

I would assume that the main goal of those presentations is to recruit engineers for the Dojo program, and we might get a version more palatable to a wider audience next month at Tesla AI Day 2.

Lessons from Tesla’s Approach to Innovation

  • Nathan Furr

presentation tesla

There is a method to the madness.

Tesla has shifted the auto industry toward electric vehicles, achieved consistently growing revenues, and at the start of 2020 was the highest-performing automaker in terms of total return, sales growth, and long-term shareholder value. As a technology and innovation scholar, the author has studied how innovators commercialize new technologies and found that Tesla’s strategy offers enduring lessons for any innovator, especially in terms of how to win support for an idea and how to bring new technologies to market. To understand Tesla’s strategy, one must separate its two primary pillars: headline-grabbing moves like launching the Cybertruck or the Roadster 2.0 and the big bets it is making on its core vehicles, the models S, X, 3, and Y.

Few companies have attracted as much scorn and adoration as Tesla. When Tesla launches a product like the Cybertruck, the reception tends to be divisive: Critics see it as further evidence that founder Elon Musk is out of touch and doomed to fail, while supporters buy in — within a month Tesla received 200,000 preorders for the new vehicle. Compare that with the Ford-150, the world’s best-selling car in 2018, which sold just over 1 million vehicles that year.
