Sustainable product design and development is a vast field of research. So far, no study has been conducted on the sub-field of research. Typically, each scholar conducts research based on his/her point of view and expertise. This paper aims to compile sustainable product design and development categorization into topics, objectives, methods, and contributions. Based on a literature review of sustainable product design and development, several research sub-categories were found: Process, life cycle assessment, eco-design, design strategies, multi-criteria decision making, performance measurement, customer’s side, and miscellaneous that covers various study areas. This categorization provides benefits to researchers in a category to focus more on choosing the appropriate literature. In addition, it is easier for scholars to identify knowledge gaps in a category for future research.

Sustainable design aims at environmentally friendly, socially acceptable and economically acceptable. Sustainable design method in life cycle stages takes into account environmental, economic and social factors. It is an important means for industrial manufacturing to save resources and energy, reduce waste and improve quality. The sustainable design method is an effective design method for enterprises to reduce the cost of products, increase the added value and competitiveness. In this paper, the sustainable design method is analyzed, and the product sustainable design evaluation system and the process of product design innovation are constructed. The product sustainable design method is used in the design case, further research and application are carried out, and good results are obtained. The research in this paper provides a basis and method support for the sustainable design of enterprises, which is of great significance and application value for the development and realization of new products and the sustainable design and manufacture of products.

Successful concept selection is of paramount importance in the early phases of new product development. Concept decisions define the success of both the project and the product to a great extent. Previous research has shown that structured methods are often not used properly or at all in design practice. To shed light on the dynamics of concept selection in real life, we studied decision strategies and the use of decision criteria in concept selection. The experiment involved sixteen professional designers and utilized mixed methods, including verbal protocol analysis. The participants used a great variety of evaluation styles and criteria, sometimes changing them in midst of evaluation. Furthermore, some internal conflicts appeared between different concept evaluation tasks. These findings put designers’ ability to make rational and good concept decisions under some doubt. Further research on human behavior in concept selection is deemed necessary and some prospective research questions are introduced.

Concept selection is the most critical aspect of the entire product development process. However, many industries are not aware of this, or they might not possess essential knowledge about concept selection. Thus, this study aims to identify the concept selection method used by a series of particular areas within the manufacturing industry. In this study, the researcher conducted interviews with six managers from various production areas in the manufacturing industry. Then, the obtained data were analyzed qualitatively. The concept selection methods used for product design and development in the manufacturing industry were found to be based on various factors, including orders received, building and evaluating prototypes, discussion among executives, market demand, trial and error and the market's standard deviation. This study serves as a guideline to help managers to evaluate concepts in a more practical way.

The paper describes how to correlate the results obtained by a customer survey performed by the Kano model and the choices made by concepts selection using scoring technique in order to identify the more promising design alternatives created by a design team. The need to correlate these results is extremely important during the design activity performed by students in a course of Product Development, because this can guarantee that the final decision is taken on the basis of a right comprehension between designers and customers. The frequency of the Kano model attributes and extent of satisfaction are put in relation with the scoring that the design team assigned to each design characteristic. Comparing these elements the design team can evaluate their choices and modify or better specify the design solution from the early stage of design. The discussion of the methodology is supported by a study case related to the design of “a pedal vehicle on which a new electronic device can be ...

Title: Review of models and frameworks for set-based design

Abstract : This paper aims to investigate the state-of-the-art in models and frameworks for set-based design and identify the main gaps and contributions in the literature. As a result, 121 models were analysed. Most models are quantitative, computational, engineering design-oriented and focus on early stages. Although the narrowing down process plays a central role in the set-based design, very little is addressed regarding its management processes. No model was found describing the inputs and outputs of the set-based design and the narrowing down process simultaneously. Thus, knowledge is dispersed and focused on specific parts. The relevance of this study relies on providing a comprehensive investigation of the state-of-the-art, identifying opportunities to advance in this study field and providing recommendations for future works seeking to support the development of new methods for implementing and managing set-based design, enabling and encouraging its adoption.

Keywords : set-based design; lean product development; literature review; narrowing down process; concurrent engineering; design space; value; trade-off; quality function deployment; integrated product teams.
