How to Write a Smartphone Review

Last Updated: October 22, 2022 Fact Checked

wikiHow is a “wiki,” similar to Wikipedia, which means that many of our articles are co-written by multiple authors. In an age where consumers are increasingly relying on each other for honest and straightforward recommendations of new products, writing or recording a smartphone review is a great way to help potential buyers get a feel for a new phone. Technology blogs and video sharing sites like YouTube are all the rage for smartphone reviews and adding reviews to your blog on a constant basis can create a trusting following of readers who come to rely on your reliable advice. You can write or film your own smartphone review with help from the following tips.

Step 1 Increase your background knowledge of the device you'll be reviewing.

  • If you don't already own the smartphone in question (for example, if you're reviewing a range of phones for your blog), visit one of the smartphone carrier's retail store and play around with the phone, or ask a friend who owns the device if you can use it for a day. Learn about the phone's features, design, pros, cons, and the price.

Step 2 Introduce the smartphone.

  • Be sure to include any relevant hyperlinks to help customers find the information you're referring to, perhaps even purchase locations.

Step 3 Break down your review into categories.

  • Talk about what you like about the smartphone you're reviewing, how easy it is to use, what features in particular are of worthy note.

Step 4 Always include the phone's drawbacks along with its better features.

  • Look at the advertising blurb accompanying the smartphone. Consider whether you think the smartphone in question lives up to the hype or whether there are aspects that you don't agree with. It will be important to compare your experience with the advertised promises.
  • Even summarizing the review with the best "pro" and the most annoying or disabling "con" can be a good overall summary for readers. For example, "Pros: This smartphone has a battery that outlasts any of its competitors in the same niche. Cons: Its price and the limited color range."

Step 5 Take clear, detailed...

  • Post your review on a blog, on a review site, or anywhere else relevant and be sure to respond to comments made to you. Sometimes developers will also respond if your review has struck a chord, so it pays to monitor your review actively for a good period of time.

  • If you have spotted anything unusual about the smartphone that hasn't necessarily being promoted as a feature, such as an ability to use it somewhere that your previous phones have never worked (for example, if doing field work, etc.), be sure to point this out. Your personal experiences can influence other people who might be in the same situation as you. Thanks Helpful 1 Not Helpful 0
  • Be cautious about anything that might be a service provider [AT&T, Rogers, Bell etc.] issue. Not everybody uses the same provider, so if you're having reception problems, gather more data before you include it in the review. Thanks Helpful 2 Not Helpful 0
  • You might like to extend your reviewing skills to apps that are supported by the smartphone in question. In this way, you can build a large repository of useful information related to the topic of smartphones. Thanks Helpful 1 Not Helpful 0

  • Be objective. If you love Android, don't just simply hate the iPhone. Be objective, and try to explain any issues you find with some clear and concise words. Don't try to mimic a paid publication on the take from a manufacturer like Apple. Thanks Helpful 8 Not Helpful 1
  • A review is not a rant. If your smartphone turned out to be a complete lemon, contact the retailer and manufacturer before letting loose your frustration online. You may have been unlucky enough to get a faulty phone, or you may not be using it correctly, or the company may find a problem thanks to your complaint and do its best to rectify it with you. Thanks Helpful 5 Not Helpful 3

The iPhone 5 is the fanciest smart phone in the market currently. The iPhone is assembled with great care and caution so as to successful meets the evolving customer needs. In order to demonstrate Apple’s commitment to meeting the needs of its consumers, this paper provides a product review of the IPhone 5. First of all, the IPhone 5 has a beautiful design. Many customers are concerned about how their phone looks. Unlike other phones that do not address this need, IPhone has an aesthetic feel. The IPhone 5 is also lighter compared to many other phone models (McFedries 15). This means that the phone is easy to carry both in the pocket and by hand. The weight of the phone matters because in many cases, heavier phones face the risk of dropping to the floor in case one is multitasking while handling the phone. In addition, it is sometimes uncomfortable to carry a heavy phone in the pocket because it often wears off the pocket due to the heavy weight. In addition to the light weight that characterizes the iPhone 5, it is important to understand that the phone has a higher speed in terms of internet connection and detection compared to other phones and the IPhone 4 model. This means that consumers can be able to enjoy fast internet as they surf the internet. Considering the growing need for accessing the internet in daily activities such the social media, iPhone 5 is an ideal phone tom possess. In addition, to faster internet and Wi-Fi the iPhone 5 has a great GPS and location service (Cohen 31).This means that there is no need for purchasing a GPS if one possesses an iPhone 5. This shows that the iPhone5 is cost effective because one can save money for gadgets such as a GPS because the iPhone5 provides the same service. In addition to the GPS, the iPhone 5 can store large quantities of data especially music. With and iPhone 5 one does not have to purchase an iPod for the purposes of listening to music. One can either save music directly on the iPhone5 or use a memory card to save music. In addition to music, the iPhone 5 has an excellent camera. The neatness of the pictures taken using the iPhone 5 is greater than other phones such as Android models and the iPhone 4. It is also important to note that the iPhone 5 provides a wide range of photo editing software compared to other phones in the market. Therefore, in addition to saving money that would be used to buy a GPS, one can also save money that could be used to buy a camera. The iPhone 5 also comes with excellent ringtones that can be assigned to each caller in the phone contacts. This is a characteristic that is not available in many phone models and those phones that have the service do not have nice ringtones. In addition to the software component of the iPhone 5, it is important to note that this phone has the battery of this phone is long-lasting (Kelby & White 29). This means that the iPhone 5 can be able to stay charged for a longer time compared to many other phone models. For example, Android phones are known to drain their charge in a short period. Therefore, if one is looking for a phone that has a long battery life, the iPhone 5 is the ideal phone to purchase.

How Our Process Works

Our mission of radical transparency.

The rigged system relies on hidden information and backdoor deals between brands and publishers. When publishers skew toward profits vs. honest journalism, the consumer loses. We believe the best way to create change is through total commitment to transparency.

review essay gadget

59% of consumers turn to Google for reviews , edging out Amazon as the most popular channel.

As a blogger and reviewer, you have an incredible opportunity to capture this traffic and bring in a consistent flow of affiliate income.

This guide will provide a framework for writing product reviews that attract eyeballs, add genuine value to your audience, and make sales.

Why you should write product reviews

1. they’re cheap.

Product reviews are cheap to produce once you get the hang of it, especially compared to other content types.

You need a good understanding of your niche, solid processes, and some experience. With that, you can quickly identify the significant benefits and drawbacks of any product.

How expensive is it to run a blog?

Check out our pretty detailed piece about the costs involved in building and running a blog .

2. They’re very effective

A product review typically gets traffic from one keyword and one keyword only—for example, product name + review .

What’s more, 90% of people who search for that query have already decided to buy the product—or at least, strongly considering a purchase. A good portion of these buyers is likely googling this product while the checkout page is open on another tab.

It’s this “intent to purchase” that makes these keywords so lucrative. You have options to redirect traffic to your products or take credit for the conversion as an affiliate.

3. They help build authority

By demonstrating an in-depth understanding of the pros and cons of products in your industry, you show browsers that you’re worth trusting.

Additionally, if you can show you know the landscape of your market inside out, you’ll get on the radar of the brands in your niche.

Whether these potential partners reach out to you or not, don’t be mistaken—they know who you are and what you do—which may lead to future collaborations.

If you’re new on the block, it might be worth, make sure you get your review seen by whomever you’re reviewing by tweeting them, or even sending them a link building email .

Product review template: an example

Above the fold.

review essay gadget

The top section of the review (above the fold) should include a summary of the key information of the product. This makes it easy for browsers to understand what the item is about and whether it’s in line with what they need.

Below are some ideas to include in your above the fold content:

  • Positioning: In complex or competitive markets, the subtle differences between 2 equivalent products often boil down to a clear claim on the product’s homepage. For less crowded markets, these disparities are more challenging to determine. It comes down to the “built for” claim that aims to communicate which audience this tool is trying to reach. Think, “email marketing tool for bloggers ” or “backpack for skaters ,” or “activewear for tall women .”
  • Pros and cons: This is the more detailed analysis of your review. Pros and cons help the reader understand where a product is a lot better or worse than the market average.
  • Pricing information: For “self-service” products, mention the existence (or absence) of a free trial/free plan, the “entry price,” and the “full-featured” price. Nobody wants to read a full copy of a product’s pricing plan. Sometimes these products don’t publicly display pricing, and you need to sign up to get a custom quote. Research to see if someone has posted the quoted price range and present that information in your review.
  • Customer reviews: It’s hard to write a decent review without any consideration for customer reviews. We like to include reviews from trusted platforms. For software, for example, use websites like Capterra and G2 . For other products, you can use customer reviews from online store product pages to substantiate your points.

review essay gadget

It’s in this section that your ability to research and present information is critical. Decide on 4-5 criteria that are essential to evaluate the chosen product.

Then show a grade based on your evaluation and detail in less than 10 words why you’ve made that claim: For example:

  • Value for money
  • Ease of use
  • Customer support
  • Feature set

And you can get even more specific. If, for instance, you were reviewing CRM software, your evaluation would include:

  • Lead management
  • Installation complexity

Summary table

review essay gadget

Everyone who’s considering buying a product is seeking validation. Whether they’re on the checkout page and want a bit of reassurance before they enter their credit card information, or they’re just starting their research process and shortlisting options.

Your product review needs to address the most conversion-ready audience immediately. That means including a call to action above the fold.

Then address the slightly less conversion-readers browsers with a thorough table summarising your review.

From our experience, this is the hardest part of your review to execute. Every single word counts as you’ll need to boil down 2,000 words to 100.

Only after you’ve made a powerful first impression can you address each criterion in detail.

Introduction

Keep it simple here and explain who the product is for and when it’s a good option.

H2: Feature set

In this part, go through every core feature of the product in detail. Give personal insights as to how it works and how it compares to the market. This is also an excellent opportunity to build internal links across your content to strengthen your topical authority and SEO.

It might be a good idea to break down this H2 into a few H3s. You’ll want to include a lot of illustrations here, so the paragraphs are longer, and it’s good to bring structure to the review to not confuse readers (and writers).

H2: Custom criterion

If you feel like including this criterion as part of the feature list wouldn’t do it justice, this is what this placeholder is for.

In most cases, the feature set h2 should be enough.

H2: Customer reviews about Product Name

Don’t merely list customer reviews in this section, as it’s unoriginal, and anyone can do it.

review essay gadget

Take it up a notch and provide a high-level analysis of customer reviews. For example, curate grades and the number of reviews on the leading platforms and aggregate the data into a table.

Another thing is to give a detailed picture by pointing out the pros and cons of the product according to customers.

As a bit of a test, if you’ve done your research properly, customer review data should approximately match your own pros and cons.

If you’re reviewing a SaaS company, check out reviewflowz’ snapshots to get an instant snapshot of a product’s customer reviews across up to 12 platforms.

H2: Customer support for Product Name (when applicable)

First, list the contact options, e.g., email, phone, tickets, and chat. You can even reach out to customer support and see what kind of answer you get and turnaround time.

Next up, evaluate the help center if they have one. If you’re in a coding-related niche, assess the documentation.

Lastly, review all the content the company behind the product is producing, and ask yourself:

  • Is the content helpful?
  • Are there YouTube videos that you found useful?
  • Do they have some sort of action-driven tutorials?
  • Do they have a directory of agencies or specialists that you can call for help?
  • Upon onboarding, do they provide personalized support?
  • Is the software support integrated into the user interface for easy access?

When doing this exercise, you’re trying to understand whether the company will help you to get the most out of the product.

H2: Product Name integrations

The word “integration” sounds software-specific, but the idea is to see how the product will work for you in real life.

Whether it has to do with your lifestyle, your company’s technical infrastructure, or your cat’s favorite food, it’s the same idea.

H2: Product Name pricing

Don’t list pricing plans or versions of features and benefits in your product review, as we mentioned previously.

These pricing tables are tough to read on the company’s website because they’re afraid of litigation and need to avoid anything that could be held against them.

You don’t. So do the work and explain (in plain English) why it makes sense to go for the premium plan and when the light plan is enough.

How to optimize a product review for SEO?

1. go for the right keyword.

Product name + review: That’s the keyword you’re going for…period.

It’s tempting to go for “Product Name” as it has 40x more impressions. And “Product Name alternatives” sounds like a cool keyword. Oh, and don’t forget “Product Name pricing.” They all sound great. Right?

Let’s break this down:

  • Product Name: Folks entering this query don’t want to read a review. They’re generally looking to buy, signup, log in, or find a coupon.
  • Product Name alternatives: This is a pretty good keyphrase, but we suggest you only target if the search volume is high enough. Even then, you can’t seriously address that intent with a review post.
  • Product Name pricing: It makes sense to target this keyword with a specific post in some very unique cases. These situations are mainly relevant to open-source software. Some people think that open source is free, at least on the surface. However, it’s not free. They don’t come cheap by the time you factor in hosting, setup, maintenance, etc. Pricing is then (and only then) a very opaque topic you can help readers understand better.

2. Work on your title

Write an enticing meta title and description.

If you google your keyword, you’ll notice it’s a pretty crowded space. Your page meta information will help you stand out and drive higher than average CTRs, which in turn will help your rankings.

Engagement is everything on (realistic) single keyword posts.

As a reminder, your meta title can be different from your page title, providing an opportunity to add more relevant keywords across both titles.

3. Use schema.org rich data: review & product objects

review essay gadget

Schema provides a consistent method for structuring data online and on web pages. There are specific schema data for reviews and products that you can implement to your post for improved searchability. For instance, the schema will show product ratings, votes, and pricing as rich snippets on the SERPs.

While intimidating at first, it’s quite straightforward to optimize your product post review for schema. A quick google search will show that there are many wordpress plugins built for blogs that handle this all for you.

But don’t skimp on this step, as your CTRs and engagement will drastically improve as a result.

4. Build links to your reviews

Link aggressively to your review within your site. Some bloggers are tempted to add an affiliate link for every mention of the product on the site.

Without context, an affiliate link is rarely clicked. And even then, it won’t convert.

Put an internal link to your review instead and leverage the ranking on a high intent keyword.

We suggest you group a few reviews in a listicle, which you can get external links for. On the list post, be sure to have links to each individual review. This way, you build a “link farm” (listicle) and distribute the authority to “children” (reviews).

5. Great high definition images to visually show the product

In eCommerce, not being able to see and touch a product is the main reason for hesitation. People searching for reviews want to see the product for themselves.

For software products, even with free trials, people also want to see and feel what the UI is like.

If you’re doing reviews for physical products, invest in a solid camera, some photo editing software, and training. Good lighting, whether natural or artificial, is also fundamental.

Commit to improving your visuals over time, as it’s crucial to writing a great review.

Once you have a good process, it becomes way more manageable.

If you’re reviewing software, you’ll need access to the product. For “self-service” SaaS tools, it’s not a problem to get on a trial. For demo-first products, you’ll need to ask or pay for access.

Pro tip: If you sign up for an affiliate program, you’ll get access to the tool in most cases.

Pro tip 2: Affiliate marketing typically works a lot better for self-service software for two reasons:

  • Conversion rates are higher, and sales cycles are a lot shorter.
  • They’re usually based on marketing growth engines that rely heavily on clean marketing attribution. Tracking what channel a lead comes from is something these brands take very seriously. Conversely, sales growth engines typically rely more on human interaction and value closing the deal rather than tracking the source. So there’s a lot less money and effort invested in finding the right sources of traffic. In other words, they don’t care much for your traffic.

6. Take care of the comments section

Don’t become a problem for your partners. For example, some frustrated users might come to your site to post negative comments about your recommended solution.

While you really shouldn’t filter this feedback out, it’s usually a good idea to reach out to the product team to let them know about this criticism. Odds are, they’re not monitoring your blog, and they can fix the problem if they contact the customers in time.

Otherwise, encourage feedback where you can. Embed a few CTAs on the page to increase your readers’ motivation to write about their experience in the comments section.

Comments also help build authority and trust for your product reviews. Furthermore, you’ll attract regular fresh content to your post, which Google loves.

Wrapping up

  • Keep your product review keywords simple
  • Use the products you recommend
  • Present your points clearly and visually where possible
  • Add your unique perspective

When you nail these factors, you’ll start producing exceptional product reviews that cut through the noise and start ranking and converting.

Happy reviewing!

Sample of a Short Essay on Electronic Gadgets

Using electronic devices in the classroom is often underestimated. They can bring a lot of benefits if students and professors use them only for studying purposes. Otherwise, if students use their smartphones and laptops only for entertainment, this misuse significantly distracts them from the learning process and makes their devices uselessm, unless they look for “ write my essay for me cheap ” help.

WritingCheap cheap essay writing service proposes students to read our sample short essay on electronic gadgets. After getting acquainted with this subject, you can understand the methods of using electronic devices in the classroom and how to write a perfect essay by yourself. Impress your teacher with your knowledge of the advantages and disadvantages of electronic gadgets in class.

Effects of Electronic Devices on Education Electronic devices include integrated circuits controlled by the electric current; they are mainly used for processing, transfer, and control systems. Education, on the other hand, involves the process of gaining knowledge through an interactive process. Electronic devices affect education positively and negatively; the positive influence concerns enhancing education, and the negative influences affect the entire learning process. Positive Effects Electronic devices enhance education by making the learning resources easily assessable. By using a computer, students can access education information through the Internet. Additionally, there are technology-related projects that help the student be creative, innovative, and inventive (Eggers, 16). It also improves the teacher-student communication; these devices make a classroom a network system where there is a transfer of information from teacher to student and among students. Moreover, they directly help teachers in educating by bringing out the real picture in the process of giving information. For example, documentaries show the practical experience of events in history. Negative Effects The negative effects include making students spend the most time on devices, time that could otherwise be used for studying. Additionally, the information given tends to diminish the necessity of education. Some devices, such as mobile phones, also affect the learning process through interruptions from calls and text messages. Moreover, there is too much information available on electronic devices, and some of it is wrong. Hence, they tend to misguide students (Chen & Yun 6). Finally, these devices also create an opportunity for cheating among students. Conclusion In conclusion, electronic devices positively affect the communication process by making it easier for both the student and the teacher. However, if they are not contained, they change the process negatively. Therefore, there is a need to establish the best approach to ensure that devices have a positive effect, for example, through creating rules about the use of these devices in a classroom. How do you decide which gadget to buy? Take the Wardrobe Test

chris-matyszczyk

You're likely often tempted to buy a new gadget.

Amazon holds a sale , Apple releases a new product , or Samsung offers something that looks genuinely innovative .

But how do you decide which to buy?

Also: Amazon Big Spring Sale: The 80+ deals you can shop now

Of course, you should read the ZDNET's expert advice  as a first step, but there are so many personal aspects to making a decision that might cost you anything from a few dollars to a few thousand. So, how do you do it?

I'd like to offer you a personal barometer for tech purchases. I'd like you to think about your wardrobe.

Who are you wearing?

You might be the sort of person who doesn't care much about clothes. Or perhaps you merely claim not to care much about clothes.

Then again, you might be someone who takes a certain personal pride in what they wear, how they wear it, and how much they're prepared to pay for a particular piece of clothing.

For most people, there are certain essentials, like shirts, socks, dresses, and coats. Yet they'll spend differing amounts depending on how important those items are to them -- and, importantly, how those items reflect their own personality, self-image, and life.

Also:  I tested 40 phones in the last year. These are the very best

Try taking that same attitude with your tech purchases.

Ask yourself whether a particular piece of technology is essential, optional, or purely frivolous. Then ask yourself whether it's from a utilitarian brand , a middlebrow brand , or a fashionable brand .

No, Apple isn't quite Gucci but it's surely more elevated in image than, say, Samsung's Banana Republic -- yes, that's gone quite upscale, but not all the way -- or Dell's Ross Dress For Less .

How does it fit?

Once you've allowed yourself to choose a brand, consider the individual item.

With a piece of clothing, you may ask yourself how often you'll wear it. With a piece of technology, ask yourself how often you'll use it.

With a piece of clothing, you may wonder how it fits in with the other pieces of your wardrobe and whether you'll be able to create compatible outfits. With a piece of technology, you should ask yourself a very similar question. Will it sync with everything else? Will it play well with the choices you've made already? And will it somehow add to the way you live, work, and present yourself?

Also: The best laptops you can buy: Expert tested

Will it, in fact, make you feel good for longer than a few days?

It's also worth thinking about how long it took you before you bought a particular piece of clothing. Was this an impulse purchase? Or did you ponder it for a while, considering whether it was worth it, whether it would make you feel good, or whether either of those things ultimately mattered at all?

Bearable or wearable?

What, though, about wearables?

You've perhaps had experience with smartwatches . Did you choose the one you bought because of its technological quality? Or did you choose it because you could get a strap in your favorite color?

Also: The best smartwatches you can buy

And if you're enticed by, say, Humane's AI Pin , will you really wear it all the time? Will you get tired of looking at your own palm to get information? Or will it mark you as a certain sort of person who you don't want to be?

Again, give it the Wardrobe Test, then decide.

Of course, there is one more question: Is this piece of technology far outside of your usual look -- and are you attracted to it for purely irrational reasons ?

Think about pieces of clothing that you've (thought you) really wanted in the past and decided not to buy. How many times are you filled with regret? And how many times have you wondered what on Earth you were even thinking?

Review: Apple Vision Pro: Fascinating, flawed, and needs to fix 5 things

There are now so many gadgets from which to choose. Purchase decisions are hard, so please give yourself the space. Before every tech buying decision, take the Wardrobe Test and give really honest answers.

If you need visual aids, go to your wardrobe, open it, and stare at it -- and consider its relationship to your tech use.

You might just discover it's closer than you thought.

A Salty Young Critic Explains Internet Culture, Patiently

Famed for her fearless literary takedowns, Lauren Oyler adopts a softer tone in the new essay collection “No Judgment.”

NO JUDGMENTS: Essays, by Lauren Oyler

Why do people like to watch boxing? We admire the fighters: their guts, their footwork. It is elegant yet brutal. It entertains. It is a form of proxy violence — someone else being hit and doing the hitting — that taps into our primal urges.

Lauren Oyler made her name as a pugilist. Her breakout essay on the website BookSlut famously begins, “I have always hated Roxane Gay’s writing.” Her reviews get attention partly because she voices the criticism that one may be too politic to express. Typically, that criticism is harsh. Typically, it is funny. Even her 2021 debut novel, “Fake Accounts,” contains a 40-page parody of the fragmentary novel form that was dominant in that moment, especially among women writers. It goes on for so long that the reader has time to love it, hate it, become exasperated with it, resign herself to it and, finally, admire its diabolical commitment.

Now Oyler has returned with “No Judgment,” a collection of eight essays written specifically for the book. Her sense of humor is present, as is her agile thinking. But fans of blood sport won’t find much here to satisfy their baser appetites. Far from incendiary, the book is cleareyed and grounded. Several essays here provoked the surprising thought, “This is the sanest thing I have ever read on this topic.”

review essay gadget

The book begins with an introduction explaining that some of the essays were inspired by “a growing agitation about what I perceived to be misunderstandings and fallacies spreading in cultural criticism and commentary.” Others center on personal experiences. Topics include: the evolution of internet gossip, the flawed social network Goodreads and the creep of the word “vulnerable” into arts criticism. The uniting idea, if there is one, seems to be about how people are using or absorbing media wrong, and how this is annoying.

The essays are long and unhurried, and the fare will be familiar to anyone who spends a lot of time online. Many of them involve Twitter discourses of the past few years. Martin Scorsese’s views on Marvel movies make an appearance, as do the online sagas of the writers Lauren Hough, Kathleen Hale and Elizabeth Gilbert, each of whom raised the hackles of the online reviewing community with a variety of consequences.

The first essay, “Embarrassment, Panic, Opprobrium, Job Loss, Etc.,” traces gossip through the 21st century, from the rise and fall of the website Gawker to #MeToo and whisper networks, and the notorious anonymously sourced list of “bad media men” that shook up the magazine world in 2017. These episodes are fluidly stitched together with added context from history and literature, which is the structure of most of the essays in the book. At its best, it feels like your smart friend explaining to you something you missed on the internet, why it’s important and what it means. Occasionally, it feels like your friend overexplaining these things.

Oyler is a sharp and confident critic, and some interpretations in the book are outstanding. For instance, her reading of the film “Tár,” in an essay called “The Power of Vulnerability,” suggests it is not about cancel culture, as many critics wrote when it first came out, but about what would happen if a woman acted like a man. She writes: “We see Tár from rise to downfall, playing the man the entire time. We see her being called maestro. … Most important, we see her in this astounding, unrealistic career, which, in reality, a woman like her would never achieve. Not only because she is a woman, but because she is a woman who acts like a man: cocky, selfish, self-important, rude, on closer inspection a total fraud.” This is an invigorating way to think about the film, and one that sidesteps trite notions of cancellation.

Likewise, in an essay about the forever war of irony versus sincerity, sparked by David Foster Wallace’s 1993 essay “E. Unibus Pluram” and rehashed every few years online, she proposes that the binary itself is fake. “These oppositions are, have always been, reductive, false: A complex work will almost always have both irony and sincerity, and it is possible to express sincere — or authentic, or true — feelings through irony, a rhetorical device that is useful when you want to represent the tension between two conflicting ideas at the same time.”

The collection’s most ambitious essay is an assessment of autofiction as a form rather than a genre. There are many interesting reflections here on Oyler’s own work (“Fake Accounts” is autofiction) and on the work of others — Vladimir Nabokov, Sheila Heti, Sally Rooney and more.

I had never considered, for example, the space between the reader’s projection of an author of autofiction, and who the author really is. That the author can play with this — either defying or reifying the reader’s preconceived notions — is a tool, and a very cool one.

Still, the book’s measuredness cuts both ways. While it likely demonstrates Oyler’s growth as a writer (you can’t be an edgelord all your life), it lacks the boldness of her novel and magazine writing. It is oddly safe. “TED Talks are stupid,” she writes. Well, yeah; The Onion launched a series making fun of them in 2012.

That these essays were written specifically for the book, meaning they did not run as magazine stories or pegged to news events, made me wonder, sometimes, at the why of them. Why these particular topics? Why this set of minor irritations? Is there anything new or definitive about them? Is there a sense of risk, aesthetically or otherwise?

Luckily, the execution is fresh enough to keep one reading. And the barbs, when they do come, are good — in the final essay, a cheap dentist is described as “a tan man in a linoleum hole.” Maybe it’s best to follow the book’s lead and approach it with equanimity: We can appreciate and mourn its maturity both at once.

Leatherman Surge 30

Design and features

An 1800-year-old multitool was unearthed in the Mediterranean and is now on display at the Fitzwilliam Museum in the UK. In 1851, Herman Melville described a Sheffield tool with “multiple contrivances” in his novel, “Moby Dick.” Later in the same century, Karl Elsener produced “Swiss army” knives in Ibach, Switzerland. Today, a web search for plier-based multitools finds hundreds of models, all variations of Tim Leatherman’s original 1975 “Mr. Crunch” design ideas.

In my youth, many different bladed tools found their way into my pockets, but as skills developed, pliers became a necessity but were cumbersome to carry. In 1984, I made dozens of trips to my local mall’s Cutlery World store to caress the stainless steel beauty of Tim Leatherman’s original mass-produced PST Personal Survival Tool, salivating, savoring, and saving for months to afford the $125 price tag. Forty years later, I’m rarely without one. They are still objects of extraordinary beauty and utility, and the Leatherman Surge is no exception.

Arriving wrapped in black and yellow, the Leatherman Surge arrives in recyclable protection.

Leatherman Surge 01

The Surge measures 4 1/2 inches when closed and weighs 12 1/2 ounces. It feels hefty and robust.

Leatherman Surge 07

For comparison, here is the Surge next to its siblings, Wave.

Leatherman Surge 08

And with more of the family (top to bottom)  PST, Rebar, Wave, Free P4, and Surge.

Leatherman Surge 09

Straight and serrated blades, a T-shank holder with a removable saw, and spring-loaded scissors are accessible without deploying the pliers. All are secure with liner locks. The scissor blades are short but sharp.

Leatherman Surge 27

Leatherman includes a two-sided diamond-coated/ metal file that fits into the T-shank holder. The diamond file can quickly edge a dinged blade or smooth a cracked fingernail. The aggressive metal file grit powers through plastics better than most of my dedicated tools.

Leatherman Surge 12

Both knife blades are made of razor-sharp 420HC steel, which holds an edge well, is easy to sharpen, and is corrosion-resistant.

Leatherman Surge 13

The handles pivot to access the pliers and internal tools.

Leatherman Surge 14

On one side, there is a can/bottle opener and flat bit holder with reversible Phillips and flat-blade screwdrivers. Are you worried about breaking these bits? Don’t! Over the years, I’ve used the bit kit extensively and never broken one. The bottle/can opener also has a “V-notch” wire stripper.

Leatherman Surge 16

The can and bottle opener works great. I’ve often used it to unlock ridiculously stubborn lids that confounded dedicated openers.

Leatherman Surge 15

The other side sports two sizes of slotted screwdriver and an aggressive awl. Each tool is equipped with a nail notch to aid deployment. The screwdrivers are beveled on both sides and provide excellent grip on even the most obstinate fasteners. I’ve used the awl to open boxes, make holes in drywall, scrape paint from metal surfaces, and even perforate bricks and ceramic tile to make clean breaks. Fantastic!

Leatherman Surge 18

All internal tools are locked in place with spring-loaded back locks that engage in cutouts at the back of each implement. The Surge also has a spring assembly along each internal spine that engages locks to prevent the external tools from opening with the internal tools deployed. It’s not 100% foolproof, but some fiddling is needed to bypass it – do yourself a safety favor, and don’t do that! Safety first!

Leatherman Surge 20

Powerful pliers with needle nose tips crown the Leatherman Surge multi-tool. I used the precise tips multiple times to grasp and remove tiny splinters.

Leatherman Surge 21

The plier’s teeth are aggressive and capable of holding the most ornery nuts.

Leatherman Surge 22

The replaceable wire-cutting jaws are superb, and it is easy to slice stranded wire without pinching. Closest to the fulcrum, the hard cutters had no trouble dissecting coat hangers and 10-gauge wire. At one point, a job foreman scolded me for using a Leatherman to strip wires until I showed him that with a light grip, the tool does an excellent job without nicking the conductors. It takes practice, but bravo Leatherman!

Leatherman Surge 23

An often overlooked feature is the crimping jaws. Like everything else, they do a better job than many dedicated tools.

Leatherman Surge 24

Leatherman includes a ballistic nylon belt sheath. The metal snap closes with a satisfying click, and there is storage inside for a bit kit and file/saw when they aren’t riding on the tool. I would have liked to see loops for horizontal belt carry, but plenty of options exist.

Leatherman Surge 02

Leatherman stands by their warranty and often provides new tools when a damaged one returns to their service center. They even professionally engraved a damaged PST before returning it. Amazing!

Leatherman Surge 29

What I like about the Leatherman Surge multi-tool

  • Impeccably manufactured
  • There are so many tools!

What needs to be improved?

  • A strap for horizontal carry on the belt case would be great!

Final thoughts

Leatherman Surge 05

“Jack of all trades, master of none ” is an often misquoted proverb credited to Benjamin Franklin. The correct version is, “Jack of all trades, master of one .” I can’t think of a better phrase to summarize my experience with Leatherman tools. In my experience, the quality of each implement is often better than that of standalone tools. In the past 40 years, I’ve crafted, tinkered, and repaired thousands of devices using only EDC gear, relieving countless production managers, stranded motorists, and one very thankful mom. Many have tried to usurp Leatherman’s place in my pocket, yet none have succeeded. If you need a heavy-duty, reliable tool, you can’t go wrong with the Leatherman Surge. Tim Leatherman and company, if you are reading this, thank you from the bottom of my heart for your indelible contribution to society!

Price : $149.95 (Bit kit – $30.00, Pocket Clip – $6.00) Where to buy : Surge – Leatherman , Amazon (Bit kit – Leatherman , Amazon , Pocket Clip – Leatherman ) Source : Leatherman provided a free sample for this review but did not provide input, guidance, or editing before it was published.

Describe Your Favourite Gadget: Sample IELTS Cue Card Answers to Buckle Up Your Preparation

You’ve probably heard phrases like “digital editing” or “surf the Internet” in relation to technology. However, learning how to use these phrases naturally in your speech is an important part of becoming an advanced English speaker.

In this IELTS Speaking sample, we’ve gathered a variety of IELTS Speaking questions and answers for the technology topic to assist you with this task.

IELTS Speaking Cue Card Sample Answer One

It’s no secret that I’m a big fan of the iPad. This portable powerhouse is ideal in terms of convenience, size, and weight.

What Do You Use it For?

I’ve used it to work, read books, play games, connect remotely to other machines, research, shop, and, of course, email at various times since owning one. Except for that on-screen keyboard, the form factor has always meant that everything was a joy.

It’s not bad, but I find it a little awkward to work in for an extended period of time. Not only is there no haptic feedback (a small buzz to indicate that you’ve actually touched a key), but it also takes up a large portion of the screen, making it difficult to use when holding the iPad in both hands in landscape mode.

How Long Have You Owned It?

Well, I own an IPad eight gen. I have owned it for about 6 months now and it has never upset me with its performance, it is easy to handle and the new updates that Apple provides, just makes it easier to use, with new features and shortcuts.

IPad is the best tablet in the sense that its various apps are extremely useful in people’s daily and difficult routines, such as in their difficult working routines. IPad’s video apps are a great way to unwind by watching movies or listening to good music on a small screen rather than a big screen. While we can’t compare the TV to the IPad, watching movies or different shows on the tablet makes you feel closer and more real.

Explain Why Is It Important to You?

Image editing, blog writing, and staying in touch with my teams while working remotely during isolation are all things I’ve been able to do on an iPad. Not only does it assist me in completing these tasks, but it also allows me to multitask by creating spaces and combinations of apps, just as I can on a Mac but have never done. I like to keep all of my messaging apps in Slide Over so that I can access them at any time.

Of course, now that I can use a mouse with my iPad, everything has improved significantly. I use a Logitech M337 mouse that connects and works wirelessly without the need for a dongle.

In the meantime, there aren’t many iPad alternatives worth mentioning. Surface devices are excellent laptops, but they are not suitable for use as tablets. Android tablets come with a lot of bloatware out of the box, and software updates after the first year are rare.

Neither of these options has apps that are optimised for large touch screen displays. You can get work done on a Windows tablet if you treat it like a laptop and use apps designed for non-touchscreen computers.

As technology advances, we are presenting many new and cutting-edge inventions in the field of electronic devices. People easily change their minds and become addicted to gadgets based on their desires. The most common electronic gadgets that most of us use are computers, television, laptop, and mobile phone.

In our culture, we use laptops to complete our tasks. As an example, homework, projects, and design. A laptop computer is a portable computer that can be used in a variety of settings.

Many laptops are designed to perform all of the functions of a desktop computer, which means they can run the same programmes and open the same files.

However, in order to be even more portable, some laptops, such as netbooks, sacrifice some functionality.

I have been using a laptop for 5 years and I bought my recent laptop 2 months ago. We’re all familiar with computers. It is one of the most significant achievements of modern science.

A laptop is a computer that is smaller than a desktop computer. It performs the same functions as a computer. However, there are numerous advantages and benefits to owning a laptop computer.

It’s lightweight and portable, and it can be operated from afar. You can take this machine with you wherever you go. You can carry it in your backpack or use one of the many laptop bags available. It comes with a built-in mouse and keyboard.

There’s no need for a portable keyboard or mouse. However, because it has so many USB ports, you can use it if you want to.

Taking notes by hand is time-consuming and physically demanding. Laptops allow us to type their notes directly into a document. Electronic note-taking is both faster and more flexible than paper-based note-taking.

I can use digital note-taking to automatically index and organise their study materials, search for information quickly using keywords, and share notes with other students.

Unlike paper notes, which can be destroyed or lost, digital notes can be stored and backed up to ensure they are not lost. While I can take notes on a desktop computer at home, they can only take notes in class, where they receive the majority of their information. Because the laptop is portable, notes can be accessed at any time and from any location.

One of the most significant advantages of laptops is that they enable students to access information from anywhere they have access to the Internet. Getting an Internet connection is easier than ever before, with more places offering free Wi-Fi.

Students can study whenever they want, no matter where they are, thanks to this accessibility. More notes and educational tools, such as educational programmes and websites, can help students perform better in the classroom.

The Canon PowerShot SD630 digital camera has been my favourite electronic device for almost two years. I rarely leave the house without it, as it is so small that it can fit in a matchbox. Previously, I relied on disposable cameras, which I would only bring with me if they fit in my purse.

All of my photo negatives are kept in a cookie tin, and the pictures I took with my disposable camera are stored in a variety of decorative photo albums on my coffee table for easy viewing.

My digital photos are now stored on my hard drive, with backups on memory sticks ranging in size from 264 KB to 2 GB. I even have old floppies with images on them, but I have no idea what I put on them because none of my current laptops supports floppies.

The beauty of digital photos is that they last a lifetime and should always have the same resolution and colours. I can also use Photoshop to correct, colour, and modify an image now that I’ve gone digital.

Because the photos I take with my digital camera are practically free, I tend to take a lot of them, resulting in a nearly full hard drive. I’m concerned about the day when the hard drive fails and I’m no longer able to view them on my monitor immediately. I’ve never printed any of my digital photos before.

As much as I adore my digital camera, my only concern now is what will happen when technology changes (which I am certain it will), and I will no longer be able to access the images and memories stored on the stick, just as I did with floppies, my hard drive, of course, will be history by then.

The photograph you just took will appear on the LCD screen of a digital camera. If it doesn’t appear automatically, press the play symbol to bring up the photos you took; you can then scroll through them with the arrow keys. You can view your images and reshoot them if you don’t like the composition or need to adjust the exposure compensation thanks to digital technology.

While technology now allows you to take a picture with the press of a button, this was not always the case. Cameras use some pretty cool science and advanced technology to collect and record light. While the time machine may be science fiction, the camera has the ability to freeze memories indefinitely.

IELTS Preparation: How to Answer Part Three Questions?

Here are some questions about technology and following them we will cover the following questions:

How Can Technology Assist Us in Our Daily Lives?

In many ways, technology has had a profound impact on our lives, and technological advancement has made our lives easier than ever before. To a large extent, the internet has played a role in this. It has also made day-to-day communication more efficient. In addition, communication and shopping have improved.

What Are Some of the Most Notable Inventions You are Aware Of?

Many remarkable and inventive inventions have shaped our lives and the history of humanity. Automobiles and light bulbs, in my opinion, are two of the most important inventions ever.

The first device allows people to commute whenever and wherever they want, while the second has made working in dark and late-night environments possible.

Is It Possible for You to Live Without Your Smartphone?

The answer to this question is a no and for some reason somewhere in the middle. It has become an indispensable part of my life due to its multifunctionality. Every day, I use it to make calls and communicate with my friends and family, send messages, access the internet, take pictures, search for information, and listen to music. Even if I lose it for a while, I think I’ll have a hard time. It’s a complete nightmare.

When you play it back, listen to how clearly you pronounce words and how well you choose vocabulary. Judge clears way for Trump to appeal ruling keeping Fani Willis on Georgia 2020 election case

ATLANTA (AP) — The judge overseeing the Georgia 2020 election interference case cleared the way Wednesday for Donald Trump and other defendants to appeal a ruling allowing Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis to remain on the prosecution.

Superior Court Judge Scott McAfee’s ruling means defense attorneys can ask the Georgia Court of Appeals to review the judge’s decision not to disqualify Willis or dismiss the indictment over her romantic relationship with special prosecutor Nathan Wade. It will be up to the appeals court to decide whether to hear the matter.

The judge said he would continue working to get the case ready for trial by addressing other matters in the meantime.

But while Willis had made clear her determination to turn the page from weeks of embarrassing headlines, the judge’s decision to green-light the appeal allows defense attorneys to keep at the forefront allegations of impropriety that threaten to damage the public’s perception of the prosecution.

McAfee last week said Willis can remain on the most sprawling of four criminal cases against the former president as long as Wade resigns, which Wade did on Friday.

(AP Photo/Alex Slitz, Pool)

Willis’ romantic relationship with Wade has roiled the case for weeks, overshadowing the allegations charging Trump and 18 others with trying to illegally overturn his narrow loss to Democrat Joe Biden in 2020 in Georgia in a desperate bid to remain in power. Among the acts listed in the indictment was a Jan. 2, 2021, phone call in which Trump urged fellow Republican Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger to help him “find” the 11,780 votes needed to beat Biden.

While the judge did not find Willis’ relationship with Wade created a conflict of interest that should force her off the case, he said an “appearance of impropriety” infected the prosecution team. The judge rebuked Willis for her “tremendous” lapse in judgment and questioned the truthfulness of Wade’s and her testimony about the timing of their relationship.

Attorneys for Trump and the other defendants said in court papers on Monday that Wade’s resignation was not enough to correct the appearance of impropriety the judge found. Defense lawyers say a failure to remove Willis could imperil any convictions and force a retrial if an appeals court later finds it was warranted.

Trump attorney Steve Sadow called the judge’s decision to allow the appeal “highly significant.”

“The defense is optimistic that appellate review will lead to the case being dismissed and the DA being disqualified,” Sadow said in an email.

Jeff DiSantis, a spokesman for the district attorney’s office, noted in a text message that the case had not been put on hold, adding that prosecutors will “work to move it forward to trial as quickly as possible.” The district attorney’s office will only comment on the appeal in court filings, he said.

Trump has pleaded not guilty and has denied doing anything wrong. The presumptive Republican nominee for the 2024 presidential election has characterized all the criminal cases against him as an effort to hurt his bid to reclaim the White House in November.

Defense attorneys alleged that Willis paid Wade large sums for his work and then improperly benefited from the prosecution of the case when Wade used his earnings to pay for vacations for the two of them.

Willis and Wade acknowledged they engaged in a romantic relationship, but they rejected the idea that Willis improperly benefited from it. Willis and Wade insisted they didn’t begin dating until after he became special prosecutor and the relationship ended in the summer of 2023. They both said that Willis either paid for things herself or used cash to reimburse Wade for travel expenses.

Wade offered his resignation in a letter to Willis on Friday, saying he was doing so “in the interest of democracy, in dedication to the American public and to move this case forward as quickly as possible.”

“I will always remember — and will remind everyone — that you were brave enough to step forward and take on the investigation and prosecution of the allegations that the defendants in this case engaged in a conspiracy to overturn Georgia’s 2020 Presidential Election,” Willis wrote in a letter accepting his resignation.

The case is separate from the 2020 election interference case brought by special counsel Jack Smith in Washington’s federal court. That case is currently on hold while the U.S. Supreme Court weighs Trump’s claims of presidential immunity, with oral arguments scheduled for next month.
