About DissOnline

The German National Library houses the largest national collection of online dissertations in Europe. We have been collecting online dissertations and theses since 1998. Since then, the collection has grown to more than 284,000 documents (as of November 2020).

Since these activities began under the aegis of DissOnline more than 20 years ago, electronic publishing has become a part of everyday university life. This is due to the close cooperation between universities, their libraries and computer centres, and representatives of academia as well as the long-standing support provided through projects funded by the German Research Foundation ( DFG ).

The DissOnline project was brought to a successful, sustainable conclusion. Stakeholders whose initiative had supported DissOnline then became free to transfer their commitment to other areas. In June 2012, the DissOnline advisory committee therefore decided to integrate the functions and information on the website www.dissonline.de into the German National Library’s services. This is particularly relevant in terms of the deposit of works with the German National Library. The extended metadata format XMetaDissPlus enables all types of publications and documents available in subject-specific and institutional repositories and on university servers to be deposited in just one fully automated transaction.

Deposit information

The DissOnline portal is also integrated into the German National Library's catalogue as a search option. This means that online dissertations are listed as a component of the German National Library’s collection alongside traditional printed dissertations, other online university publications and academic literature. Our catalogue offers a wide variety of search options that are constantly being developed and optimised further. You will find an explanation of all the available search options here:

Guide to searching dissertations and theses in the German National Library’s catalogue (only available in German)

In order to enhance the international visibility of the collection, the metadata for all German online dissertations is continually delivered to DART , the European portal for online dissertations. NDLTD : Networked Digital Library of Theses and Dissertations is committed to the promotion of electronic publishing in the academic sector beyond Europe. The International Symposium on Electronic Theses and Dissertations (ETD) takes place every year.

Statistical information

Online university publications have been collected, catalogued and archived at the German National Library since 1998. The illustration shows how the percentage of online publications has developed over the years since this work began. Here it must be considered that although dissertations are subject to a mandatory publication obligation and an obligation to be placed on deposit with the German National Library, only an approximate impression of doctoral and publication activities in Germany can be given.

As the statistics refer to the year in which the publication was released rather than the year in which it was deposited, it is quite possible that figures may rise in succeeding years. This applies in particular to the most recent full year.

Graphical representation: Proportion of online publications in relation to the total number of dissertations and habilitation by year of publication in the collection of the German National Library

The DissOnline projects

  • 1998–2000 Dissertations Online
  • 2003–2004 Establishment of a coordinating body for online university publications
  • 2005–2007 DissOnline Tutor
  • 2005–2008 Establishment of a portal for online university publications

The intensive cooperation between all partners and sponsors also made it possible to start collecting dissertations and theses on a voluntary basis in 1998, eight years before the amendment to the Law Regarding the German National Library and the provision stipulating the mandatory deposit of online publications.

Shipping to Germany from the US: Tips, Costs, and Options

Introduction.

The world of international shipping, particularly from the US to Germany, presents a series of intricate challenges. This journey, fraught with detailed policies, fluctuating costs, and stringent regulations, may seem overwhelming for many—ranging from small business owners seeking to broaden their market footprint, individuals eager to bridge distances with a thoughtful gift, or those navigating the logistics of relocating. Our mission with this guide is to demystify these complexities, providing a detailed exploration of shipping alternatives, fiscal strategies, and industry best practices. By offering nuanced insights into the shipping process, we aim to arm you with the knowledge needed to make well-informed choices. This ensures not only the safe and punctual arrival of your parcels but also optimizes cost-effectiveness and efficiency in every shipment.

Section 1: Understanding International Shipping to Germany

Subsection 1.1: the basics of international shipping.

International shipping involves transporting goods across borders, subject to various regulations, customs checks, and international agreements. When shipping from the US to Germany, it's crucial to understand these processes to avoid unexpected delays or costs. Each parcel must go through customs, where it's inspected to ensure compliance with local laws and regulations. This may involve paying duties or taxes, depending on the value and nature of the items being shipped. Understanding these basics is the first step toward a smooth shipping experience.

Subsection 1.2: Why Germany?

Germany stands as one of Europe's largest economies, boasting a robust market and a strategic location that serves as a gateway to the European Union. For US businesses and individuals, Germany represents a significant opportunity for expansion and connection. Its high consumer demand, coupled with an efficient logistics network, makes it an attractive destination for international shipments. Recognizing Germany's importance in the global market will help you appreciate the nuances of shipping to this country.

Section 2: Shipping to Germany from the US – What You Need to Know

Subsection 2.1: customs and regulations.

Shipping to Germany from the US means your parcel will need to clear German customs. This process involves declaring the contents and value of your shipment, adhering to import regulations, and potentially paying duties and taxes. Germany has strict rules on what can and cannot be imported, including restrictions on certain foods, plants, and medications. Additionally, the post-Brexit landscape has introduced changes in how goods are shipped between the EU and non-EU countries, affecting shipments from the US. Ensuring your paperwork is accurate and complete can help avoid delays.

Subsection 2.2: Calculating Costs

Several factors influence the cost of shipping from the US to Germany, including the parcel's weight, dimensions, and the speed of delivery. Shipping carriers offer various options, from economy to express services, each priced differently. Furthermore, insurance and tracking services add additional layers of cost but provide peace of mind. To estimate shipping costs, utilize online calculators provided by shipping services, and don't hesitate to compare prices to find the best deal. Remember, packing your items compactly and securely can help reduce shipping costs by minimizing the package size.

Section 3: Choosing the Right Shipping Option

Subsection 3.1: courier services vs. postal services.

When deciding how to ship your parcel to Germany, you're typically faced with choosing between courier services and postal services. Courier services like FedEx, UPS, and DHL offer comprehensive shipping solutions with benefits including faster transit times, detailed tracking, and higher reliability for international shipments. They are ideal for urgent or valuable shipments but tend to be more expensive.

On the other hand, postal services such as the United States Postal Service ( USPS ) provide more economical options for less urgent shipments. While delivery times may be longer, and tracking might not be as detailed as with courier services, postal services offer significant cost savings for lighter packages.

Comparison:

Cost: Postal services are generally cheaper, especially for small, light parcels.

Speed: Courier services offer faster, often guaranteed delivery times.

Reliability: Couriers typically provide more robust tracking and customer service.

Your choice should depend on the balance between cost, speed, and the value of your shipment.

Subsection 3.2: Economy vs. Express Shipping

The choice between economy and express shipping impacts both delivery time and cost. Economy shipping is more affordable and suited for non-urgent deliveries, while express shipping provides faster, often next-day service at a higher price. When time is of the essence, express shipping is the go-to option, though it's important to weigh the cost against the urgency of the shipment.

Section 4: Best Practices for Shipping to Germany

Subsection 4.1: packaging and labeling.

Proper packaging and labeling are crucial for the safe and successful delivery of your parcel. Use sturdy, high-quality packing materials to protect your items during transit. Bubble wrap, packing peanuts, and rigid boxes can prevent damage. Ensure that the outer box is free of old labels and markings to avoid confusion during shipping.

Labeling should be clear and legible, including the recipient's full address and contact information. Additionally, including a return address ensures that the parcel can be returned to you if any delivery issues arise.

Subsection 4.2: Tracking and Insurance

Opting for tracking and insurance adds a layer of security to your shipment. Tracking allows you and the recipient to monitor the parcel's journey, providing peace of mind and transparency. Insurance is particularly important for valuable items, offering financial protection against loss or damage. While it adds to the cost, the protection it affords is invaluable for high-value goods.

Final thesis abroad

Bachelor’s thesis, Master’s thesis, Diplom thesis or Magister thesis abroad

If your School or Department consents, you can write your final thesis (Bachelor’s, Diplom, Magister or Master’s thesis) abroad. However, this is a highly individual matter which requires thorough planning.

General conditions

Final theses are always subject to the regulations of the university at which you are enrolled and are graded according to these regulations. This means that FAU regulations also apply for your thesis even if you decide to complete it abroad. You should therefore consult the study and examination regulations in good time and possibly also contact your subject advisor. Aspects to bear in mind are deadlines which must be met, the scope of the work, registering for a thesis and such like. You always need someone at FAU to officially allocate the topic and grade your work.

There are two ways to obtain a final thesis abroad:

  • You decide on a topic and find a supervisor at FAU and, in agreement with your supervisor, write the thesis at a university or a company abroad.
  • You organise a final thesis at a university or a company abroad and find a supervisor there. Once you have found a suitable topic and a supervisor abroad, you still need to find a supervisor at FAU. To do so, contact the department closest to the subject of your thesis.

Contact & funding

There are several ways of contacting universities or companies abroad.

  • Make the most of connections your lecturers have established to other institutions abroad. An official list is not available, please discuss your intention to work abroad directly with your lecturers.
  • Find out about the exchange and scholarship programmes at FAU (e.g. Erasmus+ , DAAD PROMOS ) and external programmes (e.g. by the University Centre for Bavaria and Latin-America ).

Western Norway University of Applied Sciences

Non-EU applicants: 15 October – 1 December EU, EEC and Nordic applicants: 1 March – 15 April

The priorities in the first semester are scientific work as well as a deeper introduction into international maritime processes. Cultural aspects, communication, safety, and organisational learning are reviewed in detail. The access to maritime technology is achieved by a deeper understanding of stability of floating devices. This is a key for safe operations. In the second semester, the ability to analyse will be promoted by examples of complex projects. With the help of analysis models, a variety of simulations are constructed. These are evaluated commercially, logistically, and from the perspective of technology, quality, and risk. Moreover, optimising methods are presented and applied to simulation models. Here managerial aspects are always considered, and knowledge is imparted in a project-oriented way. In the third semester, the student can expand his/her knowledge, skills, and competencies while assisting in ongoing research projects. In this context, the Faculty of Maritime Studies in Leer offers the profile Sustainable Maritime Operations, and the Stord/Haugesund University College has specialised in Offshore and Subsea Operations. Students can apply for a student exchange in this semester. Besides specialised expertise within ship technology and maritime operations, the takeover of management duties often requires leadership skills and management techniques as well as mental maturity, self-confidence, independence, decision-making abilities, and a sense of responsibility. According to this, the International Ship Technology, Maritime Operations, and Management Master's programme also focuses on the acquisition of methodological and social competence as well as personal development. Intercultural competence is promoted during some of the courses, as well as during at least one semester at the other partner institution of the joint programme.

University of Applied Sciences Emden/Leer

Content Bild

The University of Applied Sciences Emden/Leer was newly founded in 2009 in the process of splitting the merged university "Fachhochschule Oldenburg/Ostfriesland/Wilhelmshaven". Originally, the University of Applied Sciences Emden/Leer was founded in 1973 as "Fachhochschule Ostfriesland". The faculty of Maritime Studies was one of the founding departments with its roots in the middle of the 19th century, founded in 1854 as "Städtische Navigationsschule Leer". Today the university has four faculties: Maritime Sciences, Social Work and Health, Technology, Business Administration. At the moment, the University of Applied Sciences Emden/Leer has 27 Bachelor's and 13 Master's study courses. Some of these courses can be studied on a part-time basis. Others are offered as online and professional courses. Four of the study courses are offered in cooperation with the Carl von Ossietzky University in Oldenburg. The University of Applied Sciences Emden/Leer has approx. 4,174 students (winter semester 2022/23), 471 employees, including 118 professors. The university consists of two locations. The main location is in Emden and the faculty of Maritime Sciences is in Leer. In Leer, approx. 300 students are studying in two Bachelor's programmes; one is Nautical Science and the other one is Maritime Engineering and Management. With its varied and up-to-date programme, University of Applied Sciences Emden/Leer positions itself primarily as a university of applied science in the region and for the region. Bachelor's and Master's degrees in engineering and natural sciences, nautical science, business administration, social work, and health science aim to cover current and future needs for academics in the region. Excellent teaching and study programmes with an international profile are seen here as essential elements in the education of young scientists for a globalised knowledge-based society. Research, technology transfer, and continuing education – particularly in our established areas of specialisation – serve to provide stimuli for new businesses and new directions in existing business and society.

Points to take into account while writing your master's thesis

The topics you can choose for a master's thesis should be highly relevant for practice and policy and the thesis should to be empirically grounded.

Process of a master's thesis

  • Discuss a possible topic with Prof. Liudvika Leišytė.
  • Write a 2-page proposal (incl. title, table of contents and timeline of the thesis).
  • Get approval for this by Prof. Leišytė.
  • Prof. Leišytė will write a letter to the Central Examinations Office to declare that she will be your supervisor.
  • Write the thesis: in the process, make sure to send the questionnaire for surveys or interview schedules to Prof. Leišytė to get approval before you start your empirical work.
  • Submit your thesis to the Section Central Examinations Office, Dez. 4.3.

Type and time frame of the master’s thesis

  • Generally, all theses at the Professorship are empirical (i.e. the self-organized collection and analysis of data is part of every thesis). This type of thesis has a time frame of 26 weeks (for details see the Prüfungsordnung ).
  • In exceptional cases, theoretical theses are accepted. The specific topic must then be discussed and agreed on with Prof. Liudvika Leišytė. The time frame for this type of thesis is only 17 weeks.

The time frame (count of weeks) starts with the registration of your topic (letter from Prof. Leišytė to the Central Examinations Office).

Topic of the thesis

The topic you choose should relate to the main research fields of the Professorship of Higher Education. Possible Topics:

  • Innovation through organizational learning
  • Stakeholder representation and characteristics in the boards of universities
  • Promotion of collaboration at German universities: policies and practices
  • Changing governance of universities and implications of this for their performance
  • The implementation of gender policies in German universities
  • Characteristics and challenges of an inclusive professional organization

Academic entrepreneurship

  • Policies of German universities to promote spin off creation in Germany
  • The characteristics of founders of new high tech ventures in Germany
  • Motivations of academic entrepreneurs to patent
  • Gender and entrepreneurship: evidence from patenting activities

“One of my best decisions”

Learning German has been worthwhile for Siyana from Bulgaria. She talks about the career opportunities that have opened up for her in Germany.

Siyana Dimitrova

Siyana Dimitrova’s enthusiasm is infectious: “I would like to tell others how wonderful it is to study in Germany and how many opportunities that opens up. And I’d also like to prove that you really can make it.”

Siyana herself is a good example of why it is worth learning the German language and making use of the opportunities that offers. The young woman learned German at school in her home country Bulgaria and then studied journalism and media education in Magdeburg. Now she is active as a study ambassador at Magdeburg-Stendal University of Applied Sciences and helps school-leavers from outside Germany make an easier start at the university.

Long way to school to learn German

“ Learning German was one of the best decisions in my life,” says Siyana today. “Although at the time friends often asked me why I took all that trouble.” Every schoolday for five years she undertook a 50-kilometre commute to the Foreign Language High School in the town of Montana. The school belonged to the global network of PASCH schools . Siyana achieved her goal: the German Language Diploma (DSD) .

I would like to give something back to others.

From 9th grade onwards Siyana took every opportunity to visit Germany as part of a student exchange. “It was always important to me to apply what I had learned and gain new impressions of the country. That motivated me to make even greater efforts.”

The big chance: a DAAD scholarship

Siyana wanted to study in Germany although she knew that would be very expensive for her family. Then a big opportunity presented itself at the end of 12th grade: the chance of a scholarship from the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD). Siyana applied, passed and began studying in Magdeburg in 2012. She is now the proud holder of a Bachelor in journalism and a Master in media education.

Siyana continues to have links with the PASCH schools network and the DAAD as an alumna. At Magdeburg-Stendal University of Applied Sciences she developed a “study ambassador” concept. She aims to make it easier for school-leavers to make their way in Germany by providing first-hand tips and advice. “I really like doing that because I missed that kind of support then. And it’s also a chance for me to give something back.”

Siyana is a PASCH alumna who is active as a study ambassador at Magdeburg-Stendal University of Applied Sciences.

Voluntary service for kulturweit

Giving something back is also her motive for becoming involved in the kulturweit voluntary service, for which she is spending six months at the DAAD information centre in Budapest. “I definitely wanted to go to the DAAD because their scholarship made my success possible.” We’ve come round full circle: Siyana is now contributing, among others, to a campaign called Deutsch.Karriere.Erfolg. This initiative by the embassies of Germany, Austria and Switzerland promotes German as a foreign language.

Writing the Thesis

Schreiben der Dissertation / Writing the Thesis

Schreiben der Dissertation / Writing the Thesis Image Credit: http://www.istockphoto.com

You can either submit a monograph or a cumulative thesis . As a general rule, both must be comparable/equivalent in terms of type and scope. The thesis must be written in one language throughout either English or German (with the exception of the German and English summary). This also applies to the acknowledgments and any quotes used. In exceptional cases, the doctoral board shall decide whether the requirement for a cumulative work to be entirely in either German or English can be waived if the work consists of articles in both German and English.

When preparing the dissertation, please observe the requirements of the Statute for Safeguarding Good Scientific Practice . If you have any questions about citations, please use the citation consultation hours at the University Library.

Please note: When you are submitting your dissertation to obtain the title "Dr. rer. nat.", the term "Ph.D." should not be used in the acknowledgements (or any other section) - this is a different title, which will not be awarded to you after a successful doctorate.

MONOGRAPH A monograph is a self-contained representation of the research work and its results. It may already be published completely or partially. Any publications related to the thesis have to be submitted separately. They must not be embedded in the thesis.

CUMULATIVE THESIS A cumulative thesis reports the scientific work done during the doctoral thesis using a set of research articles. In a cumulative thesis, the research articles (including supporting information/supplements) are an integral part of the thesis and have to be embedded in the scientific part of the thesis (like the chapters of a monograph). In addition to the research articles, an introduction, a list of references etc., a cumulative thesis must include an extended summary which has to go beyond the summary of the individual papers as it has to give an overarching discussion of the results described in the research articles. Although figures may be taken from the publications, the text should be genuinely new and should not be taken from the text of the individual publications. The contributions of the author must be described for each article individually, according to the requirements of the Statute for Safeguarding Good Scientific Practice.

A cumulative thesis must consist of at least two published or accepted publications. Only publications from journals with a peer review system will be considered. All additional publications might be in an earlier stage (in revision, submitted or in preparation). The version submitted cannot be changed or updated in the further course of the doctoral process, i.e. changes to the content as part of the publication process cannot be taken into account once the dissertation has been submitted. Only those articles qualify in which the doctoral student has made substantial contributions. The substantial contribution of the doctoral student to the respective articles must be confirmed by the supervisor of the thesis. This confirmation is requested by the doctoral office as part of the evaluation process. In case of manuscripts being accepted but not yet published, a confirmation of acceptance must be provided at the time of thesis submission; to this end, it is also possible to submit a separate list with DOI links.

The Best Final Theses in 2022

March 27, 2023

Collage of the best final theses 2022 submitted at Munich Business School

More than 170 final theses were submitted to the examination office of Munich Business School in 2022. Four of them stood out in particular: They are the best theses of the year and were included in the MBS Outstanding Thesis series. In the blog article, we present the topics of the theses in more detail and let the honorees and their supervisors have their say.

As in the previous year , the best theses of 2022 demonstrate that bachelor’s and master’s theses are not only the icing on the cake on the way to graduation, but can also make a valuable contribution to research on current topics. “Best”, by the way, does not only refer to an outstanding grade; the theses should primarily convince through innovative approaches and methods as well as new findings.

And now, clear the ring for the best theses of 2022!

Mitigating, Managing and Moving Past Burnout: An Organizational Perspective on Mental and Physical Well-Being

Bachelor’s thesis by gavin trudeau.

Gavin Trudeau, graduate of the bachelor’s program International Business at MBS, deals in his bachelor’s thesis with the topic of burnout, which has become more present in society as well as in medicine and the workplace in recent years. On the basis that burnout is not just an isolated feeling of overwhelm, but a syndrome which is experienced after ongoing negative experiences that and poses great dangers to organizations and their employees, Gavin Trudeau discusses causes, symptoms, and prevention strategies. By combining a comprehensive literature review with empirical research consisting of a self-reporting survey and in-depth interviews, the bachelor’s graduate succeeds in painting a “holistic picture” that reveals “not only what causes stress at the workplace but also shows the drivers as well as appropriate measures at the company and their relation to avoid negative impacts” – say the thesis supervisors Prof. Dr. Arnd Albrecht and Evelyn Albrecht-Goepfert.

Portrait Gavin Trudeau

We asked Gavin Trudeau how he came to address the topic of burnout in his bachelor’s thesis:

“I have always been interested in psychology and the importance of mental health so it was important for me to bring those two elements into my thesis and relate it to current issues I had been witnessing in the business landscape. At the time I started thinking about my topic we were still in the depths of the pandemic, and working from home was still mandatory for most people. I was seeing and hearing so many examples of people from my network experiencing abnormal levels of stress at their jobs and having difficulties adapting to the new way of life and working, which ultimately led me to the topic of burnout prevention, stress reduction and health promotion. I thought these topics were extremely relevant and also forward thinking. The importance of mental health in the workplace is on the rise and starting to be seen as equally important as physical health. My motivation for this research was to be able to provide valuable and insightful data and recommendations so that CEO’s, managers, entrepreneurs and employees can integrate these learnings into their lives to create healthier and more positive work environments.”

Bootstrapping New Networks – Incentivization Strategies to Leverage Network Effects within Digital Platforms by Using Blockchain Technology

Master’s thesis by philipp wohlfart.

Portrait Philipp Wohlfart

Start-ups must deal with the “cold start” problem and especially for platforms that fight the “chicken and egg” dilemma, building an initial user base is a major challenge. Since new emerging technologies such as blockchain technology have so far received only little attention in research on this topic, although they promise attractive solutions, Philipp Wohlfart addresses this issue in his master’s thesis. The Innovation and Entrepreneurship graduate explores the question of how blockchain technology can help to bootstrap new networks by using token incentives when application utility is still missing. To answer the question, Phillip Wohlfart conducted six semi-structured experts interviews – with the result that token incentives can support in many ways.

“From the factual coverage to the method to the results, a truly outstanding work: logically argued, well researched, and very structured and transparently presented. Phillip Wohlfarts findings have both theoretical and practical implications for stakeholder management and alignment within platforms. They also provide insight into how to create, evaluate or analyze sustainable blockchain-based platform designs.” Prof. Dr. Anne Tryba, supervisor of the thesis and former Professor for Entrepreneurship at MBS

Analysis of the Impact of Customer Experience Management Among B2B Companies in the Construction Industry

Mba master’s thesis by sarim mehtab hasan.

While B2C companies have been firmly incorporating customer experience management (CXM) strategies into their business models for quite some time and there is accordingly sufficient research on the subject, the relevance of CXM in the B2B context has only recently been repeatedly emphasized. To investigate the importance of CXM in the context of his master’s thesis, Sarim Mehtab Hasan chooses the construction industry, for which the requirement of customer experience is even more vital due to diverse stakeholders. Interviews with senior professionals from construction companies show that the construction industry is still traditional, focuses on short-term returns, which doesn’t align with customer’s needs, and overall lacks awareness of CXM and its benefits. Sarim Hasan uses these – rather sobering – results to derive recommendations as well as short- and long-term implementation strategies for the construction industry in terms of customer experience, which earned his thesis the rating “outstanding”.

Portrait Sarim Mehtab

We asked Sarim Hasan what it means to him that his thesis in the MBA General Management was awarded as MBS Outstanding Thesis:

It was my first time writing a thesis and I learnt a lot during the entire process. Not only was I able to get an extensive understanding of the topic of CXM in the B2B environment but also improve my personal & professional skills. This, combined with the experience I gained from the business projects during my studies at MBS, really elevated my capability to manage projects effectively, which is something I currently apply on a daily basis in my full-time job. Getting this award gave a substantial boost to my confidence levels, especially to take on new risks for a higher reward, and validated the importance of CXM in today’s customer-driven business world. After working for almost 8 months in a customer-facing role post-MBA, I can undoubtedly confirm that my thesis has played a major role in my performance as a Customer Experience Manager at A2MAC1 and I hope that other business students find value in my research and take it even further.

Economic Evaluation of Digitized Health Data for the German Health Care System Using the Example of the Electronic Health Record

Mba master’s thesis by dr. sven grösgen.

Portrait Sven Grösgen

Dr. Sven Grösgen dedicates his final thesis to a highly topical and explosively discussed subject: Germany’s plans to introduce of an electronic patient record. Such a digital file promises not only to improve healthcare, but also to have a positive impact on the economy. However, the status quo is that only 1.8% of total annual spending has been devoted to driving digitization in healthcare, while per capita spending continues to rise at the same time. With a general analysis of the electronic patient record and a detailed cost benefit analysis, Sven Grösgen shows that digital storage of health data has potential to counteract inefficiencies in healthcare and that the costs would be offset within the first ten years. In addition, the MBA graduate advocates an “opt-out” instead of an “opt-in” model and provides further impulses on how the implementation of an electronic patient record can be increased and further developed into an electronic health record.

“The author provides a very good and knowledgeable overview of existing literature and discusses all relevant aspects of the topic. At the time of the research, various reservations of both medical practitioners and patients shaped the discourse, so the focus on the economic benefits is particularly enlightening. As the relevance of the topic has recently increased even more, reading this thesis can be recommended to anyone seeking a sound basis on this topic area.” Prof. Dr. Eva Stumpfegger and Prof. Dr. Florian Bartholomae about why they decided to nominate Sven Grösgen’s thesis as MBS Outstanding Thesis

DAN FREED CEO & Founder, Thesis

Our research and product development teams review clinical studies and information on safety, side effects, and any potential interactions for each ingredient being considered for a Thesis blend.

Each ingredient goes through two rounds of internal testing, in which members of our research and product development team share feedback on individual ingredients.

The research and product development team reviews existing clinical literature about synergistic benefits between ingredients and integrates it as we continue to formulate, developing 2-4 blends to move forward to Phase 3 testing.

We test each prospective blend internally, as members of our research and product development team try each of the blends before we move forward to Beta testing.

Next, we test multiple iterations of each blend with a group of 100 Thesis beta group customers and collect quantitative and qualitative feedback to help us refine the final blend.

We finalize our winning blend (based on the Alpha and Beta test feedback) by completing a final round of safety testing by our third party lab partners before we release it. Ongoing safety testing occurs with each batch of production.

After the blend undergoes third party lab testing for safety, we launch a limited release to 5,000 customers to help us gather additional feedback and work through our supply chain process

Once a blend passes the limited release phase, we launch full production in a cGMP facility and release it to all customers.

The Thesis Story

As long as I can remember, people thought I was stupid, lazy, or unmotivated. I started to believe it. In school, I would read the same page over and over again, without absorbing anything. At 16, I dropped out of high school and went to work at a sandwich shop.

Fast-forward ten years — I scored in the 99th percentile on the GMAT and earned Master’s degrees from Yale and INSEAD. Nootropics turned everything around for me, and helped me form the positive habits that I built my success on. Once I balanced my brain chemistry, I could perform like never before.

I take Energy to get me going in the morning and Motivation to power through long afternoons.

smashed up side of a huge ship with a metal bridge collapsed on it

Cargo ship that hit Baltimore bridge was involved in Antwerp collision in 2016

The Dali was reportedly detained in Belgium after scraping side of quay and significantly damaging part of hull in good weather

  • How Baltimore’s Key Bridge collapsed – a visual guide

The same vessel that hit the Baltimore Francis Scott Key Bridge on Tuesday, destroying it and sending people and vehicles tumbling into the water, was also involved in a collision while leaving the port of Antwerp, Belgium, in 2016.

According to Vessel Finder and the maritime incident archive Shipwrecklog, the Dali – a 948ft (290-meter) cargo ship with a capacity of 10,000 containers – was leaving the container terminal of Antwerp heading to Bremerhaven.

As it did so, its bow reportedly swung around, causing the stern to scrape the side of the quay, significantly damaging several meters of the hull.

The ship was reportedly detained by authorities afterward and docked in Deurganckdok, Belgium . There were reportedly no injuries or adverse pollution.

According to Vessel Finder , the weather was fine at the time, and the incident was reportedly blamed on the ship’s master and pilot on board.

What are flags of convenience?

A ship flying a flag of convenience means the owner has registered the vessel in a country other than their own. The ship flies the ensign or flag of that country, known as the flag state and operates under its laws, typically laxer than the owner’s own.

For a ship owner, the advantage of this arrangement includes comparatively fewer regulations, lower employment requirements, and thus cheaper labour, cheaper registration fees and lower or no taxes.

For crew members, the disadvantages tend towards lower working standards, fewer rights and little protection. They are opposed by the International Transport Workers' Federation.

Panama, which has the largest ship registry globally, followed by Liberia, operates an “open registry”, allowing foreign owners to register ships under its flag. It guarantees anonymity to the owners, making it difficult for them to be held to account.

The practice began in the 1920s in the US, when owners of cruise ships registered their vessels in Panama so that they could serve their passengers alcohol during Prohibition.

Karen McVeigh , senior reporter

It is unclear what crew were aboard the ship. Vessel Finder said at the time that the ship, which was built in South Korea in 2015 by Hyundai Heavy Industries, was owned by the Greek company Oceanbulk Maritime but was chartered by Maersk.

The Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA) confirmed on Tuesday that the Dali was registered in Singapore and had 22 crew on board, with Maersk adding in a statement that the crew were all Indian but none of them were Maersk crew or personnel. It said the ship was operated by the charter vessel company Synergy Group.

Maersk has been approached for comment.

About 2.6km (1.6 miles) of the Baltimore bridge collapsed on Tuesday when the Dali crashed into it, causing a number of vehicles to fall into the Patapsco River below. At least seven people were being searched for with two rescued, including one in critical condition, officials said on Tuesday at a pre-dawn press conference.

Cars exit from the Baltimore Port after the cargo ship Dali ran into and collapsed the Francis Scott Key Bridge in Baltimore, Md., on Tuesday. Two people were pulled alive from the water, two bodies were recovered and four people were presumed dead. The men were working on the bridge at the time of the collision at 1:30 a.m.

When the Francis Scott Key Bridge was struck by a cargo ship and collapsed, it was a shocking disaster that took the lives of six men working on the bridge at the time.

It also blocked off much of the port.

That raised alarm bells in the auto industry — because the Port of Baltimore handles more cars and light trucks than any other port in the U.S., and clearing the debris could take months .

Automakers were quick to emphasize that they were adapting . GM says it is rerouting deliveries. Stellantis is working on "contingency plans." Mercedes says it has options. Mazda says it has yet to finalize alternatives to this "vital" port. But it's not easy.

What we know and don't know about Baltimore's Key Bridge collapse

Imported cars travel in special ships

That's because rerouting an imported vehicle is a lot more complicated than redirecting a shipping container . Not all ports are equally equipped to unload the vessels that carry vehicles — a special "roll-on roll-off," or ro-ro ship.

And once unloaded, vehicles need to be inspected for damage and often need to have accessories or electronics installed. There's important paperwork after a car comes off a ship before it can can go to a dealer.

That all happens at a port facility that's typically built right next to where the ships unload, and it's a big reason why the vessels can't be sent just anywhere — even if you can get them off the ship at another port, who's going to install the subwoofers and finalize the window sticker?

Still, companies have several options, even though these might cause delays.

Part of the Baltimore port can still accept vehicles

First, part of the Baltimore port that handles vehicles is still operational.

The Tradepoint Atlantic terminal is located at the mouth of the harbor, before the Francis Scott Key Bridge. Volkswagen and BMW operate there, and as a result, those two automakers expect no impacts from the disaster. On Wednesday, a ship with Volkswagens arrived and was able to dock like normal.

Tradepoint Atlantic says its operation is "well equipped to handle additional levels of [vehicle] cargo. Plans to accept redirected cargo are underway, including the ability to handle the increased capacity."

Unload cars at a different port and drive them to Baltimore

Second, automakers could unload vehicles from a ship at a different port altogether and then drive them to their Baltimore facilities for those crucial processing steps, like inspections and part installations.

The Port of New York and New Jersey says it would be able to take vehicles off a ship and put them immediately on a car carrier truck bound for Baltimore, three hours away.

"Our thoughts are with all of those impacted by this collapse," Bethann Rooney, port director, said in a statement, adding that the port "is proactively working with our industry partners to respond as needed and ensure supply chain continuity along the East Coast."

Those two options would also have a benefit for Baltimore as the city reels from the loss of a crucial bridge. They would allow at least some port jobs to continue, boosting the local economy, while the waterways are blocked.

Cars can also go to vehicle-focused ports farther away

As a third option, automakers could use a port farther afield, where they are already processing other vehicles.

For instance, Brunswick in Georgia is the second busiest port for vehicles after Baltimore — and Mercedes and Subaru, which import many vehicles through Baltimore, also have large processing operations there.

Officials at Brunswick say that the port has been contacted by companies as an interim solution while the Baltimore port is partially blocked, and that the port has unused capacity to process another 200,000 vehicles per year.

So that one port could absorb a significant chunk of the vehicles normally routed through Baltimore, which processed just shy of 850,000 vehicles last year. Other ports are also home to vehicle processing centers.

However, using a more distant port would mean a longer journey to dealerships. On the upside, because many vessels carrying vehicles make multiple stops up and down the East Coast, it might not require a detour at sea; that ro-ro ship would just unload more vehicles than originally planned at other ports, to make up for what it can't drop off at Baltimore.

Automakers and logistic companies could use a combination of strategies to address this shipping disruption.

Tesla reports its first year-over-year sales decline since the pandemic—and its shares are plummeting

thesis ship to germany

Tesla shares fell double digits on Tuesday after the company missed analyst expectations with its first year-over-year sales decline since the pandemic.

Elon Musk’s EV maker reported vehicle deliveries of 369,783 for the first quarter, well short of the consensus estimate of 449,080 deliveries, according to data compiled by Bloomberg. Its shares, already some of the worst-performing in the S&P 500 this year , fell as much as 6.7% on the news before slightly rebounding. The stock was trading down 5% at about $165 as of Tuesday afternoon.

Tuesday’s lackluster deliveries report (an approximate gauge for sales) comes after even some of the most optimistic analysts have recently sounded the alarm on Tesla’s performance. In an interview with CNBC last week, notable Tesla bull Dan Ives of Wedbush Securities said the company was in a “code-red situation.”

Other market onlookers have quietly suggested it may be time for Musk to step away from the CEO role and focus on innovation. Calls for a shakeup in Tesla’s leadership have ramped up in light of Musk’s incendiary comments and embrace of right-wing politics, which survey data suggest could be hurting sales.

Tesla blamed its subpar delivery numbers on the early production ramp of its updated Model 3 at its Fremont, Calif., factory, as well as shutdowns due to shipping disruptions in the Red Sea and an arson attack at its Gigafactory in Germany.

In a series of posts Tuesday, Ross Gerber , the CEO of Gerber Kawasaki Wealth & Investment Management, said he wasn’t buying Tesla’s explanation for its poor performance—and put the blame squarely on Musk.

Basically tesla can’t sell its cars due to Elon’s behavior. Let’s stop blaming the Houthi rebels or German environmental terrorists. Or a recession that never came. Or interest rates. Only one person responsible for this. $TSLA — Ross Gerber (@GerberKawasaki) April 2, 2024

The company has also faced heightened competition from Chinese car companies , whose lower-priced models have made inroads outside of China and continue to threaten Tesla’s EV dominance. Despite its lackluster numbers in the first quarter, Tesla regained its lead in terms of quarterly vehicle deliveries from Chinese carmaker BYD , which had surpassed it for the first time at the end of last year.

In an effort to stay competitive and increase revenue, Tesla cut prices for several of its best-selling models last year, including the Model Y and Model 3, which make up more than 95% of its sales.

The company also reversed its long-held aversion to marketing and has increased its spending on digital advertising in the U.S. by 900 times compared to a year prior, according to market intelligence firm Sensor Tower.

Musk also personally green-lighted free trials for the company’s Full Self-Driving capabilities to help attract subscribers to the $12,000-per-year feature.

Correction, April 2, 2024: A previous version of this story misstated the percentage decrease in Tesla's stock.

World News | 8 cruise passengers left behind on African island race to catch up with ship

A group of Norwegian Cruise Line passengers left behind in the African island nation of São Tomé and Príncipe raced across seven countries over the course of 48 hours in a bid to catch up with and reboard their ship.

The tourists, two Australians and six Americans, had been traveling aboard the Norwegian Dawn , enjoying what was supposed to be a 21-day voyage up the coast of Africa set to end in Barcelona, Spain. However, their adventures took a turn on March 27, when the group failed to return to the ship for the all-aboard time of 3 p.m.

Among the tardy passengers were Jay and Jill Campbell , of South Carolina, who had previously joined three cruises with the same liner. Jill Campbell told NBC News on Tuesday that while she respects certain rules must be observed, the ship’s crew “followed those rules too rigidly” in this circumstance.

“I believe that they really forgot that they are people working in the hospitality industry and that really the safety and the well-being of the customers should be their first priority, and that should be placed first,” she said. “We believe there was a basic duty of care that they’ve forgotten about, so it does concern us.”

The couple went on to explain they were on a tour that ran long, but said the operator notified the cruise captain , explaining that some of their passengers would be late. The local Coast Guard also lent a hand, shuttling the group of tourists to their ship before it set sail that afternoon.

But they were already too late, and the boat’s captain declined to let them onboard.

“The harbor master tried to call the ship , the captain refused the call. We sent emails to NCL, the NCL customer service emergency number. They said, ‘Well, the only way for us to get in touch with the ship is to send them emails, they’re not responding to our emails,’” Jay Campbell said in a separate interview with ABC 15.

“The captain could have made an easy decision to turn one of the tender boats back, pick us up, safely load us, and then go on the way.”

As a result, the Campbells and the other six passengers left behind were stranded for days on the island. They were ultimately able to arrange flights to meet the ship on Monday in Gambia, then later in Senegal after the ship was unable to dock in Gambia due to weather conditions.

It was a process they called “very difficult.”

“You’re dealing with … language barriers, you’re dealing with different currencies … trying to get an agent to understand where we need to get to,” Jay Campbell said Tuesday morning on the “TODAY” show.

While the Campbells said they arrived in Senegal on Monday night, with enough time to reboard the ship, they weren’t sure they wanted to after what they experienced.

Norwegian in a statement to NBC emphasized all passengers are responsible for making arrangements that ensure they return to the ship on time for departure.

“Despite the series of unfortunate events outside of our control, we will be reimbursing these eight guests for their travel costs from Banjur, Gambia to Dakar, Senegal,” a cruise line spokesperson said. “We remain in communication with the guests and are providing additional information as it becomes available.”

Putin Offers Both Reassurance and Threat on a Wider War

President Vladimir V. Putin said that claims Russia planned to invade other countries were “nonsense,” but warned them against hosting warplanes meant for Ukraine.

President Vladimir V. Putin of Russia has warned that if F-16 fighter jets supplied to Ukraine by its Western allies operated from airfields in other countries, the bases would be “legitimate targets” for attack.

In a speech to Russian Air Force pilots late Wednesday, however, Mr. Putin rejected suggestions from some Western leaders that Russia is planning to invade NATO countries as “complete nonsense.”

The threat that Russia might move against other countries has become one of the main arguments used by the Ukrainian government and its supporters to try to persuade the U.S. to dispatch more military aid to the country.

The Ukrainian president, Volodymyr Zelensky, said again in an interview with CBS News published on Thursday that war “can come to Europe, and to the United States of America.”

“It can come very quickly to Europe,” said Mr. Zelensky.

At the United Nations on Thursday, Russia vetoed a resolution that would have extended U.N. oversight of sanctions tied to North Korea’s nuclear program, prompting accusations from Western nations that it was acting to keep the pipeline of weaponry open from the North Koreans for use in Ukraine.

The Russian vote — a reversal from its past support for the monitoring program — drew condemnation from world leaders. In the United States, the White House national security spokesman, John Kirby, called it a “reckless action” that made clear the growing ties between Pyongyang and Moscow.

The vote came a day after Mr. Putin visited the provincial town of Torzhok in the Tver region north of Moscow, where he inspected a training center for Russian military pilots.

Speaking with the pilots, Mr. Putin said that Russia spent only a fraction on its military of what the United States does. “Considering this difference,” he said, concerns that Moscow would fight NATO are “nonsense.”

Mr. Putin also reiterated his argument that NATO’s enlargement in the wake of the Soviet collapse was the primary reason for his decision to attack Ukraine in 2022.

“Did we cross the ocean and approach U.S. borders?” he asked. “No, they are the ones who are closing in on us, and they have reached our borders.”

But Mr. Putin did leave open the door to an expanded battlefield when it came to the decision by Ukraine’s allies to equip it with American-made F-16 fighter jets.

“F16 aircraft can also carry nuclear weapons, and we will have to heed this while organizing our combat operations,” said Mr. Putin.

Ukraine has also figured large in the Kremlin’s response to the terrorist attack that killed at least 143 people last week at a concert hall outside Moscow.

Since shortly after the attack, Mr. Putin and other Russian officials, without evidence, have depicted Ukraine as the likely mastermind behind it. Mr. Putin eventually acknowledged that the assault had been “perpetrated by radical Islamists,” but stuck with the contention that Ukraine could have ordered it.

On Thursday, continuing in that vein, Russia’s investigative committee, the country’s equivalent to the F.B.I., said in a statement that it had “obtained evidence” that the attackers were “connected with Ukrainian nationalists,” without specifying what that proof was.

Investigators said that they had “confirmed data that the perpetrators of the terrorist attack received significant amounts of money and cryptocurrency from Ukraine, which were used in preparing the crime.” They also said that another person had been arrested in connection with the attack and would soon appear in court.

The Ukrainian government has denied any involvement in the assault. The United States and other Western governments have said repeatedly that the Islamic State — which itself has issued two claims of responsibility — was behind the assault and that Ukraine was not involved.

With 74 victims of the concert hall attack still hospitalized, Mr. Putin has yet to visit them or to go to the site of the attack. Dmitri S. Peskov, the Kremlin spokesman said on Thursday that Mr. Putin had been heavily involved in the rescue effort on the night of the attack, and that a visit to the site of the attack would hinder their work.

Emin Agalarov, an executive with the owner of the concert hall, the Crocus Group, on Thursday defended how his staff had handled the attack and its aftermath, including a fire in the hall, and the building’s compliance with fire safety and security requirements. Speaking on state television, Mr. Agalarov said that the fire and other emergency systems had worked normally and allowed thousands of people to evacuate the building.
