A visit to the Zoo is always very interesting. Last Sunday I went to the Delhi Zoo with my friends. First of all we saw apes and monkeys in different cages. They were climbing up and down their cage. In other cages, tigers, lions, bears, foxes, wolves, and zebras were kept.

We also saw deer and kangaroos. Next, we saw many varieties of birds like cranes, ducks, pigeons, parrots, kingfishers, owls, etc. We also saw our national bird peacock in the zoo. Then we came to the glass houses. Animals of different kinds and colour were kept in them. At last, we enjoyed an elephant ride and returned home.

Last Sunday, I visited a zoo with my family. First, we went round the bird’s section. We saw parrots, sparrows, pigeons, peacocks, eagles, and vultures. Then we saw the cages of wild animals like tigers, lions, and leopards. A lion was walking up and down restlessly. It often roared furiously. The baby tigers were playing in their cage.

We saw the deer park, where only the deer were kept. We also saw zebras, bears, foxes, giraffes, a hippo, and a rhino. Then we went to the huge enclosure where the elephants were kept. They were eating grasses, leaves, and bananas. We enjoyed watching the monkeys.

We saw serpents, pythons, and cobras. Next, we saw many swans and ducks swimming gracefully in a big pool of water. The crocodiles lay Lazily near the water. We also saw a tank which contained small fishes of fine colours. We had a great fun at the zoo.

A zoo is a place where animals and birds are kept for public display. We, the three friends, went to the Alipore Zoo, Kolkata. We saw two elephants, tied with iron chains by their hind legs. The visitors offered them bananas or nuts which they gladly accepted and swallowed. We were greatly amused to see the huge animals from so near.

Then we visited the bird’s section. There were hundreds of birds. They were of various colours and had lovely plumage (feathers). Their chirping produced soft music. The twittering of sparrows was very pleasant to the ear. At some distance, there was a big pool of water. Many ducks and swans were swimming gracefully in it. We also saw a tank which contained small fishes of fine colours.

Then we came to the cages of tigers, panthers, leopards and lions. They were wonderful. The serpent house gave us a new experience. We saw there various types of snakes on the first floor. Then we saw the bisons, the camels, the ostriches and the bats. The zebras and giraffes were really beautiful who looked innocent and friendly.

It was about 2 P.M when we had taken some light refreshment in the zoo canteen. In this way, we passed the day with much delight and acquired a wonderful experience.

A Visit To A Zoo is very thrilling. I went to see the zoo with my younger brother. One is surprised to see such a variety of animals and birds. It was an interesting sight. First of all, we saw the monkeys. They were of many kinds and very amusing. We offered some nuts to them.

Then we came to the lions. They looked very fierce and majestic. They were kept in an open place enclosed with high iron railings. Sometimes they roared terribly. Next, we saw the tigers. They had yellow skins with black stripes on them. In the next two cages, there were a wolf and a fox. The wolf was sleeping, but the fox was walking within the cage.

Then we saw the long-necked giraffe, the dark-striped zebra, the thick-skinned rhinoceros, and a huge elephant with beautiful ivory tusks. We were very pleased to see them. After this, we came to the glass houses where reptiles were kept. There were snakes, cobras, and serpents. Some of them looked fearful. We did not stay there long.

Then we came to the fences where peacocks were kept. It was a treat to see one of them in his pride (i.e. with his tail spread like a fan).

We stayed three for three hours. We were tired. At last, we went to the cafe and had some refreshment and tea. Then we returned home. We enjoyed our visit very much.

Introduction:.

Everyone needs relaxation and an occasional deviation from the drudgeries of daily existence. A visit to a zoo can offer him these. At the same time, it is a learning experience. It was with this intention that visited the Alipore Zoological Garden last 25th December with some of my friends. This visit was memorable because it was both enjoyable and educational.

Entering the Zoo:

We reached the gate of the zoo in a taxi around 10 am. One has to buy tickets to enter the zoo. A number of visitors were already standing in a queue before the ticket counter. We stood behind them, got our tickets and entered the big arena of the zoo.

Various Types of Birds and Animals:

We crossed the green sward and were greeted by varieties of monkeys in cages. Monkeys and baboons were jumping on the trees within their enclosures. When some people threw food at them, they immediately jumped down from the trees to eat. Some children were making faces at them.

Then, we came across a beautiful lake in which some water birds like ducks and swans were present. There were some migratory birds as well. As we moved, we came to the big netted enclosure in which birds were kept. There were sparrows, parrots, and many other birds. Most of them were twittering, chirping and whistling. But the owls were sitting with their eyes closed as if they were lost in deep thought. The chirping of the birds went on ringing deep in my heart. In their songs, I heard the voice of nature to which the whole universe surrendered. I felt that all was right with the world.

We visited the tigers, lions, zebras, giraffes, rhinos and elephants. Roars of the lions and the tigers were deafening. We found a tiger pacing restlessly with its bloodshot eyes. It was strongly built.

Then we came across a garden in which stags and deer were frisking about. These animals were very agile and beautiful.

Our next halt was at the aquarium section. There were fishes of many species and colours. To see them swimming to and fro in the water was really a rewarding experience. Just beside this enclosure, was the cage of a black bear. It attracted a mammoth gathering. The bear was playing many tricks that thrilled us. Some people offered it eatables which it gulped at once.

Leaving the Zoo:

At about 2 pm, feeling tired, we rested and relaxed on the grassy ground for half an hour. The fragrance of flowers coming from somewhere was really soothing. We again began to stroll around the zoo after having our lunch. We saw a variety of amphibians like crocodiles, snakes, frogs, and a variety of other creatures. Then we hired a boat and enjoyed a short pleasurable ride in the canal. It was around 5 pm when we came out of the zoo. We boarded a bus, casting our last and lingering look on the zoo.

Conclusion:

I reached home in a cheerful mood. This visit refreshed my mind and deepened my awareness of the animal world.

If that arrangement is not done properly these animals would not survive. In hot summers, tigers and lions require access to water to keep cool. A gorilla or chimpanzee requires trees and lush green areas to roam.

All these animals also need to be fed according to their original tastes and appetites. A leopard, a lion, or a tiger has to be served its due quantity of raw meat for every meal. A gorilla or a monkey should be served a vegetarian diet. There are some animals that are to be fed with fish. The python is capable of devouring a whole goat and so, it should be fed accordingly, without harming any other living being around it.

Going to the zoo is not just enjoyable; it's a great way to learn. Zoos teach us a ton about how different animals live and what they like. To make sure the animals stay healthy, the zoo has its own medical team and animal doctors. These doctors are well-trained and really good at their job. Short on a Visit to a Zoo Essay

Last Sunday, my family and I went to the zoo. It was a sunny day and we got there at 8 am. When we arrived, there was a big crowd at the entrance. Some people were buying tickets, and others were just enjoying the nice weather and chatting.

Inside, we found a lovely lake with ducks and swans swimming around. It was pretty cool to see all those white ducks on the water. As we walked around, we came across a place with lots of birds – parrots, pigeons, eagles, and sparrows of different colors. The birds were making some enchanting music, and we stopped to enjoy it for a bit.

Next, we saw big cats like leopards, lions, tigers, and tigresses. One lion even rushed towards us, and its roars were really loud and scary. Moving on, we checked out a tiger's den. The tiger had sharp teeth and gave us a fierce look. It walked gracefully towards us, but its roar made us step back. We also saw bears and elephants. The elephants were majestic, swinging their trunks in the air, and the bears were happily playing together.

In another area, there were deer and stags taking strolls, and they were playful and beautiful. We then found a spot with baboons and monkeys in a big tree. They were jumping around, playing pranks, and some even came down for bananas. Kids were having fun making faces at them.

Later, we visited an aquarium with colorful fishes and dolphins happily playing in the water. Near the end, we saw sad polar bears in an enclosure, so we gave them some food. The black bear in another cage was doing tricks, and people were thrilled. We also checked out crocodiles, snakes like pythons and cobras, but the hissing cobras made us move away.

After going around the zoo, we sat in a garden, surrounded by the sweet smell of flowers. The calm wind made it a perfect place to relax. We enjoyed the view with some snacks and drinks. As the sun set, we left the zoo with happy memories and excitement.

Visiting a zoo makes us learn a lot many things about the various species of animals besides the fun and frolic that we have. We get to learn about the tastes and habits of so many varieties of birds, animals, reptiles, and beasts. I went to the zoo with my family last Saturday. It was a wonderful day to visit the zoo as the sun was shining bright. When we arrived at the zoo, there was a big crowd forming in front of the gate. While some of them were purchasing entry tickets, others were chatting and taking in the sunshine. As we reached the zoological garden, we came by a lovely lake filled with ducks and white swans. We took a boat ride and fed the ducks some bread. It was lovely to see them float by our boat and eat the bread.

As we got further, we noticed an enclosure with fowls. Different-coloured sparrows, eagles, pigeons, and parrots were chirping. We were captivated by the birds' singing. We also observed tigers, tigresses, and leopards lounging and exploring in the next enclosed den area. It was my first time seeing wild animals and I was very excited. I was terrified but also fascinated by the sharp teeth and piercing stare of the tiger. After this, we proceeded to see a show put up by the elephants. It was an amazing sight to see regal elephants twirling their trunks in the air and throwing wooden logs around. Along with this, we also saw bears playing joyfully with one another and the sight warmed our hearts.

My Experience At The Zoo

In the zoo I visited, you could either take a toy train that moved slowly to all the animal cages, or you could walk along the paths next to the enclosures' animal inhabitants. I chose to take the train and it was such a unique experience. It took us to each animal's location and stopped for a sufficient amount of time so we could see inside. The zoo resembled a miniature forest where the jungle animals resided. I saw a magnificent tiger walking gracefully inside its enclosure. I was ecstatic to see a bear playing with a plank of wood that zoo staff had left there. There were also various parrot species, each with stunning wings and vivid colours. I spent about an hour in close proximity to them since they were so marvellous.

I also saw a lot of different birds of various colours and textures, they were beautiful to look at. The zoo administrator allowed me to feed some of them—it was a wonderful experience. I was a bit scared at first but once they settled down around me, I felt at ease. I even petted them lightly. Afterwards, I had lunch with my parents in a cafeteria at the zoo. The food was delicious and it was all named after different animals. I’m definitely looking forward to the next time I’ll visit here, hopefully with all my friends.

I got the chance of visiting the Lucknow zoo as a part of the school trip. It is called Nawab Wazid Ali Shah Prani Udyan. I was very excited about this trip as it was going to be my first visit to a zoo. We arrived the next day at school and were ready to travel by bus with our teachers and classmates to Lucknow for our visit to the zoo. The travel was very exciting but my curiosity was at its highest level till we reached the zoo. Earlier I had seen a zoo only on television or in books. It was a very good part that we visited the zoo in winters because they move around in winters for getting the warmth of the sun. During summers the animals are not seen very active outside.

We reached there safely and were standing in a queue for getting entry in the zoo. My teachers had made the online booking of tickets. We were permitted to enter inside one by one.

Entry Point of the Zoo – The entry point has a sculpture of a giant tree with no leaves on its branches. The tree has different animals on it like monkey, peacock, bear, different birds, etc. A statue of a Lion has been built sitting in the front of the sculpture of the tree. There are also statues of Rhinoceros, zebra, and giraffe in the periphery area of the tree. This totally gives us a small representation of the inner view of the zoo. We had clicked many pictures near this entry point.

Inside View of the Zoo – The whole way directing to the inner premises of the zoo is adorned with the statues of different animals like dear, lion, bear, tiger, etc. The habitat of black dear was situated at first and it was full of many black dears roaming here and there. The information about the animal is totally provided on the board displayed outside the protected area of the particular animal. The habitat of the chimpanzee was a very interesting spot.

We saw two chimpanzees sitting and taking the warmth of the sun. The chimpanzee was making different types of faces and postures that made us laugh. They are very intelligent and were sitting in a very good pose. We stayed there for a little longer time and enjoyed the tricks of chimpanzees. Next, we saw ostriches. They were really very tall as we had seen them in the books.

There was a lane in the zoo that was had different types of birds. I was fascinated after seeing such a good collection of birds in the zoo. They were of different colors and breeds. We saw lions and tigers too. The Lion was roaring and giving a very ferocious look. Tigers were also roaming in their enclosures. They were three in numbers and we could not distinguish between males and females. We also saw three Himalayan Black bears in the zoo resting in their habitat. The white tiger looked very magnificent.

Apart from these, there is a toy train and parks with various swings meant for the children. We were in the zoo for four hours. We visited the entire zoo and were able to observe the animals closely.

A zoo is a place of adventure to explore where you would get to see a variety of plants and animals. The animals are kept in their cages so that they could not harm the public including children especially. It is a fun place to go with your friends and family too.

It was once I visited a zoo when I was a kid. During the summer holidays, every family makes a plan for visiting a zoo so that their children could get refreshing air and happily enjoy the adventure to watch the animals. I am lucky that my family took me to the zoo. After we reached there at the entrance of the zoo, there was a ticket counter for buying the tickets.

There was a small box fixed with the counter to store the items. I was so delighted to see all the things at the zoo. It was filled with trees all round to provide fresh air to animals and oxygen to every person. I saw many types of creatures from birds to the lion to the reptiles are found in the zoo. I had so much enjoyment when I had gone there.

There I had watched all the animals and heard the sweet sound of birds and the lion’s roaring too. I saw many birds and they were looking very beautiful that were ostriches, sparrows, peacocks, pigeons, nightingale, crane, kingfisher that were having so pretty feathers. Peacock has its colorful feathers and it dances too.

Various animals are found here with natural habitat. The monkeys are naughty as they jump and climb from one tree to another. They perform various tricks and they make funny faces and children imitate them as what they do. Other animals like rhinoceros, tiger, wild bear, deer, and giraffes were also there. They were kept in big cages.

I had gone for boat riding with my father and took a ride of elephants too. There were so many trees so they provide shade so that people can sit under the tree. I sat with my mother and father and enjoy tasty sandwiches and drank water.

I saw many other children who were playing. They were swinging on a see-saw and playing ice and spy, and running everywhere. There, I saw a pond having ducks and swam swimming. There were many golden and varieties of fishes.

I had explored and was happy once I visited there. I got aware of animals and learned to share their love with animals. I was said by the person taking not to harm them or make their fun.

I had learned new things about animals, their names and in which environment they live and what they eat. There was a board with writing that, “Children keep their distance from the animals” because of a roar of a lion or noise made by any other animal could scare them badly.

The zoo was covered with many nice things on a large piece of land for fitting the big-sized and small-sized animals wherever needed. I was happy to see the families who came with their cell phones and opened the camera to click the photos with their children playing and having full fun.

After leaving the zoo, I came outside the zoo, with my family I saw there were so many small shops to buy the food to eat in case you do not take your lunch with yourself. Various thela walas were selling bhelpuri, chaat, pani puri, fast food, ice creams, samosa and much more for everyone.

The price of the food was low cost. Many people were standing near the toys stall separately for the children to buy and also the near to it was the departmental store for buying a bottle of mineral water or cold drinks to end the thirst.

There were many animals brought in the zoo from the outside world. They were adored nicely and looked after with great care. They were looking after them and feeding them properly with high nutritional food. Lastly, I was so much tired after having an adventure, playing and having a boat and elephant ride. I got back home with my parents for taking rest.

Last week I, with the students of all Classes, made a program to visit the Zoo.

We took permission from our parents and Master/Principal, who very gladly allowed it. The sportsman in charge of the school/ college was the leader of the party. He took a bus and instructed us to be present till 08.00 A.M. The whole night was spent arranging foods and other items. Before 08.00 A.M. I reached the school/college. The Sport In charge arrived with a bus and we got into it. After a while, the bus started. The bus was smoothly running on the road and we were enjoying to see them

At about 09.00 A. M. we reached the main gate of the Zoo. We if got down from the bus and the Sports In charge purchased tickets.

I After that we entered in the Zoo. There was great rush of children and women. However, we collected our Lunch Boxes, Tape Recorders and other things and kept aside. A peon was left to guard them. We walked in the Zoo and became too much delighted to see different types of birds, pea cocks and swans. When we went before the cages of tigers, one of our friends became nervous to see the tigers. We rode on the elephant. At about 13.00 o’clock, we took our lunch and rested for some time. After that, we enjoyed with the crocodiles.

The visit was too much enjoying Such entertainment makes a student fresh and delighted and we should visit different interesting! Place at least twice a year. This gives more knowledge and awar eness of such things which are not known.

We returned home at evening.

We bought tickets and entered the huge grounds of the Purana Quila. We roamed all around it and were excited by almost everything we saw. There were so many birds, animals and reptiles that it is difficult to remember each one of them. I will try to describe as much as I can.

I was surprised by how many different kind of birds there are in this world-sparrows, ostriches, pelicans, peacocks, and many, more. We found the monkeys very funny and tried to copy them. There were also many other animals like bears, zebras, wolves, rhinoceroses, foxes etc. We were watching the lions in their cage when one of them gave a mighty roar. I was so scared i jumped back two feet. Everyone laughed at me.

We also went fore boat rides and elephant rides. We then sat under a shady tree and ate our sandwiches and cakes. We roamed some more, and came back home tried and happy.

I will always remember my visit to the zoo because I learnt so many new thing about so many different kinds of birds and animals. I have also learnt that we must love them and never harm them.

The zoo is also considered a breeding ground for animals that help continue their species. We are fascinated with animals, birds, and other creatures as human beings. We love to observe various species of animals closely. So, a zoo is where we interact with different kinds of animals and birds but under strict monitoring and surveillance. Kids get to learn more interesting facts about wildlife by visiting a zoo.

When we visit a zoo, we can find a mix of animal species from across the world. For each animal, bird and other creature, different sections are allocated according to their breeds and types of fauna. For example, monkeys and chimpanzees are kept inside a cage with many trees to climb and swing around. They are fed mangoes, nuts and bananas. Children love to see them hanging from one tree to another.

Carnivorous animals are kept in different places from one another. They are allotted enough space to roam around and hunt their prey. Sometimes, the prey is deliberately put inside the cage by zoo officials.

Benefits of Zoo

Zoo, honestly, feels like a jail for animals, but it is a breeding ground for them to safeguard their species. It brings human beings closer to wildlife and allows scientists to observe their behaviour closely. The zoo staff are well-trained and ensure the safety and health of animals. They are provided with nutritious food and health facilities. One of the significant purposes of the zoo is to show the varieties of animals and birds that exist in this world.

When it comes to kids, the zoo is an excellent entertainment source as they love to play and interact with animals. It also helps them to learn practical knowledge about different species of animals. By visiting a zoo, kids can improve their educational learning about the characteristics of various animals.

In some zoos, we get to see rare animals and birds. When humans visit zoos, they get a chance to see these rare species of animals. It’s always delightful to watch all the animals inside the zoo moving around freely. A visit to the zoo allows us to learn more about various types of animals and birds. It also provides us with easy access to rare or extinct animals. The existence of zoos creates awareness about rare species.

When we go on a zoo trip, it leaves us with a newfound perspective on animals. It increases our love and respect for animals.

Disadvantages of Zoo

Some people are against the idea of keeping animals in zoos. According to them, the animals are kept as an exhibition inside the zoo for human beings. It’s also not the natural habitat of the animals. Like human beings, animals should also get equal opportunities to live in their natural habitat.

It’s unethical to move these animals from their natural habitat to zoos just for the entertainment purposes of human beings. These poor animals are voiceless creatures forcefully put into cages by human beings. They are also kept in unhygienic conditions.

Exotic animals are not taken care of properly inside the zoo. These exotic animals are brought forcefully after knowing that they cannot survive in this climate. In some zoos, preventive measures are not taken to keep the animals safe, resulting in many animal deaths, and it looks very cruel.

Zoos, no doubt, are lovely spots for children and adults. They should be funded well to help rare species from going extinct. They help a person come face-to-face with the environment and feel one with it. The experience of going home after a visit to the zoo is always magnificent and enriching. Zoos, to some extent, are beneficial for humans and animals. Animals kept inside the zoo should be constantly monitored to ensure their safety. They must be kept in a proper hygienic manner to ensure that they are healthy. We should ensure that unethical zoos are closed permanently to prevent further loss of innocent animals.

What is Zoo ?

A zoo is a place that is protected for the public to visit. Here different types of animals are kept together in different places. To protect people from animals and animals from people, it is protected by various types of security methods. In this, different types of animals are kept separately in one place with the help of steel wires or iron bars. my experience of going to the zoo

I love nature very much and I love to walk in natural places. Birds and animals only enhance the beauty of our nature and I feel that nature is incomplete without them. All these intertwine the beauty of nature and the livelihood of the people.

During my school days I got a chance to visit the zoo in Lucknow. The name of this zoo was Nawab Wajid Ali Shah Zoological Park. I was very excited about this visit as it was my first visit to the zoo.

On the day we went to the zoo, we all reached school in the morning and we all gathered together with our classmates and our teachers for the bus journey to Lucknow and we were all set for the journey. The visit to the zoo was very excited and thrilled for me. As time went on, my curiosity for the zoo grew more and more. Before that I had seen and read about the zoo only in movies and books. It was a very good moment in my life that I got a chance to visit the zoo in the winter season. This was good for me because in the winter days the animals come out of their cages to take sun. Whereas in the summer season all the animals are sitting under the cover of their cages or some cool shade.

After a few hours we reached the zoo safely and everyone stood in a queue as the teachers said, and waited for their turn to go inside. Our teacher had already booked the tickets online for everyone. We all went inside one by one according to our queue.

Zoo Entrance – A giant tree was made at the entrance of the zoo, there were no leaves on the branches of this tree. Different animals were made on this tree, such as monkeys, bears, peacocks, different types of birds, etc. The shape of a big lion was made in front of the gate itself. The shape of zebra, rhinoceros, giraffe and other animals were also made around this tree. It was purely showing us a landscape inside the zoo. At the entrance we had many of our photographs taken as well.

Inside the zoo – The entrance to the zoo was adorned with statues of various animals like lion, bear, elephant, rhinoceros etc. In the beginning there was a herd of black deer which were surrounded by steel enclosures. All the deer were walking here and there. Complete information and safety rules of any animal were marked on the board outside the protected area there.

The habitat of the chimpanzee looked very interesting. We saw two chimpanzees sitting there and taking heat from the sun. Chimpanzees were making different types of faces seeing us, which made us laugh. Chimpanzees are very intelligent animals, they were sitting very well. We all stayed there for a while and enjoyed the ways and movements of the chimpanzee. After that we saw the ostrich in its cage, it was actually a very big bird as we all had read in the books.

There was a cage of many different types of birds in the same row in the zoo. We were mesmerized to see such abundance of birds. All the birds were of different colors and breeds. Later we saw the lion and the tiger as well. The lion was roaring looking very frightening. Tigers were roaming here and there in their enclosures. We also saw three Himalayan bears in the zoo, who were resting in their enclosures. There we also saw the white tiger which was looking very spectacular.

Apart from all this, the zoo also had a toy train, along with a park with various swings. We were all inside the zoo for 4-5 hours. We all went around the zoo and got a closer look at each of the animals there and got to know more about them.

Is the zoo a place of learning and entertainment ?

The zoo is a very entertaining and interesting place to visit. We can see different animals in it in front of our eyes. We can see animals like lion, bear, rhinoceros, white tiger etc in the zoo which can only be seen in the jungles. We can take a very close look at the ways of living and behavior of all these animals and can gather more information about them.

In zoos, we get to see and learn about different types of new animals. Which we had earlier only found in books or TV. But just saw it. After visiting the zoo, we think of spending more time with them and gathering more information about them. We do not feel like going out from there.

Zoo in my opinion as a perfect place to have fun and enjoy with your family and friends. Here we get to see different types of animals and birds and get a lot of information about them at once. In this way we can say that zoo is a complete place for learning and entertainment.

I was very happy after visiting this zoo. It was one of the best moments of my life that I spent inside the zoo. The feeling of visiting the zoo comes again and again in my mind. We must follow the guidelines given there while visiting the zoo so that we do not face any kind of problem or animal anger.

"Discovering Dickerson Park Zoo" wins awards

A nine-episode web series, "Discovering Dickerson Park Zoo," which was filmed and edited by students in the Department of Communication, Media, Journalism, and Film at Missouri State University has won a Student Emmy from the National Academy of Television Arts & Science.

Students taught by Jon Mabee, associate professor of film and television, spent three weeks filming at Dickerson Park Zoo in 2023. The episodes take viewers behind-the-scenes as well as highlight the animals, zookeepers, events, education programs, zoo medicine, staff, and animal care at the zoo. The episode "Medicine of Dickerson Park Zoo" won a Student Emmy Award for Best College Non-Fiction Long Form and won second place in the category Video Documentary from Missouri Broadcast Education Association. The episode "Education of Dickerson Park Zoo" received a Student Emmy nomination for Best College Non-Fiction Short Form.

The Emmy-award winning episode, Medicine of Dickerson Park Zoo, was edited by Trevor Huck and Jacob Lenhardt. Series credits include: executive producers, Jon Mabee and Joey Powell; producer, Lucy Atwood; directors, Jon Mabee and Autumn Girgin.

MexiVAN celebrates enGAGE Mobility

enGAGE Mobility, a nonprofit focused on helping families fund wheelchair accessible vehicles, announced its upcoming fundraiser, MexiVAN 2024. The event will take place 12-2 p.m. May 5 at 4 by 4 Brewing Company’s Fremont Hills location.

The event is a celebration of the local families supported by enGAGE Mobility, who are now driving wheelchair accessible vans after receiving grant funding for their vehicle purchases. There will be a taco lunch, family-friendly games and entertainment, and opportunities for guests to help further enGAGE Mobility’s mission.

Tickets for MexiVAN 2024 are $15 for adults and $10 for kids and are available for purchase online at engagemobility.org/events or at the door on the day of the event. All proceeds from ticket sales and additional donations will directly benefit families in need of accessible transportation.

Give 5 has new coordinator

Nancee Dahms-Stinson has been named Give 5 Springfield-Greene County program coordinator. She retired in 2021 from the Springfield-Greene County Library District and is a graduate of Give 5 Class 17.

Dahns-Stinson served as youth services coordinator at both the Springfield district and at the Missouri State Library. She has a bachelor’s degree in recreation and park administration and a master’s degree in library science from University of Missouri–Columbia. She follows Renie McClay and Sony Hocklander, who have both served as Give 5 program coordinators.

Give 5 was created in 2018 to help prevent social isolation among those age “60 and better,” while helping vital nonprofits provide much-needed relief to those in need. Give 5 participants are providing a wide range of assistance to various Greene County nonprofits, from facilitating strategic planning to doing data analysis, building sheds and maintaining facilities and maybe one of the most helpful activities: recruiting additional volunteers.

Recruitment is underway for Class 25, which will be held on May 16, 23, 30, June 6 and 12.

Statewide partnership aids United Way programs

United Way of the Ozarks is participating in a statewide partnership of United Ways designed to uplift at-risk families across Missouri.

For the first time, UWO is receiving funds from a state allocation of $5 million distributed across Missouri in partnership with the Missouri Association of United Ways. This impact investing strategy expands existing programs and infrastructure statewide to improve the trajectory of Missouri families and their communities.

The funds are from the state’s TANF (Temporary Assistance for Needy Families) grant. Locally, TANF funds are being dispersed by UWO partners, Community Partnership of the Ozarks (CPO) and Ozarks Area Community Action Corporation (OACAC).

Funding for eligible families will be available through June 30 or until funds are depleted. Interested individuals living in Douglas, Greene, Hickory, Laclede, Texas, and Wright counties can contact Community Partnership of the Ozarks at 417-888-2020.

Tough Talks focus on faith

Community Partnership and the Have Faith Initiative have scheduled a series of Tough Talks focusing on faith in the Ozarks. These events are held in partnership with Missouri State University School of Humanities and Social Sciences along with MU Extension.

Titled Learning Together, these talks focus on bringing together representatives of different faith groups around the Ozarks with the goal of having community conversations to increase understanding of diverse faith groups in our community.

The first of two sessions was held April 11. The next session will be 7-8:30 p.m. May 9 in the Plaster Student Union Theater at Missouri State University and free parking is available in MSU lots 22 and 24.

Panelists will be Rev. Christopher Miller — Trinity Presbyterian Church, Dr. Nolan Porter — University Heights Baptist Church, Colleen Appel — First Unitarian Church of Springfield, Aziza Ettaif — Islamic Center of Springfield, and Fr. Patrick Ike — Pastor Holy Trinity Catholic Church.

Geranium sale supports Salvation Army

The Salvation Army of Springfield Women's Auxiliary will host its 32nd Annual Geranium Sale, sponsored by Wickman Gardens. This community event offers 3.5-inch potted geraniums for $6 each.

Through this collaboration with Wickman Gardens, the Auxiliary aims to raise funds to support The Salvation Army's initiatives, including providing food assistance, shelter and educational programs to those in need.

Historical society seeks fellowship proposals

The State Historical Society of Missouri is seeking proposals for two Center for Missouri Studies fellowships to begin Jan. 1. Each fellowship carries a stipend of $5,000 for a project that results in the completion of an 8,000-10,000-word scholarly essay.

Topics for 2025 Center for Missouri Studies Fellowships are:

Route 66 in Missouri: In commemoration of the Mother Road’s centennial in 2026, proposals are requested for a study of the legendary highway’s impact on Missouri and Missourians.
Missouri Migrations: Proposals are sought for a study of a population movement within Missouri and how it affected the history of the state.

The deadline for submitting proposals is Sept. 3. The competition is open to both academic and independent scholars. The fellowship awards will be announced in December.

Inclusion & Belonging Grants announced

The Community Foundation of the Ozarks has selected the latest recipients of the Inclusion & Belonging Grants for the 2023-24 grant cycle.

The five recipients include Children’s Center of Southwest Missouri, $3,000 for signage; Drury University, $1,500, in partnership with Springfield Public Schools, to support a summer program for Black youth and adults; Marshfield Saddle Club, $3,000, with support from the American Indian Center of Springfield, to revitalize the Marshfield Powwow; Queen City Rock Camp, $1,500 to support volunteer stipend costs for a week-long summer day camp for girls, transgender and nonbinary youth; and Springfield Public Schools, $3,000, in collaboration with its English Language Development program, to support a new mural emphasizing the cultural and linguistic diversity of Parkview High School students.

About $11,000 remains available in the Inclusion & Belonging Grant Program. Agencies may apply for up to $3,000 to support expenses related to ensuring diverse representation in leadership roles and the community; providing students with equitable opportunity for community engagement and leadership; and hosting events that ensure visible representations of belonging in the Ozarks.

Kiwanis, CU breaking ground for inclusive playground

The Kiwanis Club of Springfield South, City Utilities, community partners and donors have worked with Cunningham Recreation to design and build an inclusive playground in accordance with Play Core’s 7 Principles of Inclusive Playground Design.

The project is fully funded and preparing to go under construction in early May. A July opening is tentatively being planned.

City Utilities has offered the land and agreed to maintain the play space for its lifetime. Also, the CU team has donated in-kind services, with more site amenities planned in the future.

Play 4 ALL, a division of Cunningham Recreation, has helped the Kiwanis group lead a fundraising campaign that mobilized $500,000 for this project.

Groundbreaking for Springfield’s first inclusive playground will take place at 1 p.m. May 3 in Miller Park near Fellows Lake, 4216 N. Farm Road 189, Fair Grove.
