- Biography & Autobiography
«Biography»is the biography of an outstanding personality. The term exists since the sixth century. Biography as a literary genre originated in ancient Greece and did not have clear boundaries; the hero of the biography could become the face not only real, but also legendary. The origins of the biography go to pre-literate era ("the Iliad" and "Odyssey", VIII century BC). The biographical genre is the genre of science fiction, which includes many varieties of scientific biography, fictionalized biography, a novel, an autobiography, etc. The history of the genre dates back to ancient times, a sample of ancient biography are the "Comparative biographies" by Plutarch.
Autobiography is consistent the author's description of his life. Usually, the person who started to write an autobiography has already reached a mature age and wants to think about his life.
Usually, the autobiography includes not only a dry chronicle of events, but also a brief pedigree, talks about his childhood, adolescence, youth and maturity, love and friendship, education and interests, social life and career choices. The author could pay more attention to the different clusters depending on the goal he pursues.
Of course, human cannot be able to be historically accurate when he tells us about the past: he often "writes" or "rewrites" of your life. Than an autobiography different from a memoir? Because they seem so similar. In both cases, the unconditional value of human life, a unique experience. However, biography is a chronicle of internal human life, whereas a memoir through the prism of his fate paint a picture of an entire historical epoch. In his memoirs, the first is the human environment, in his autobiography – himself.
We present to your attention a selection of the best audio books in the genre "Biography & Autobiography", enjoy listening and do not forget to leave your comments.

18 Best Places to Download Free Audiobooks in 2024
Get thousands of free audiobooks at OverDrive, LibriVox, Digitalbook.io, and other websites
- Emporia State University
- Payment Services
Many websites provide totally free, full-length audiobook downloads, and I've tested them to pinpoint the very best choices. Unlike many "free" audiobook sites, these sources are entirely legal. This is either because the audiobooks are in the public domain or because the websites have explicit permission from the authors.
Looking for more free books in other formats? I keep a list of my top sources for free Kindle books and another for free Nook books .
Digitalbook.io
Audiobooks can be launched as podcasts in iTunes.
Several ways to locate a new free audiobook.
Includes lots of well-known titles and lesser-known ones.
Several languages and categories to choose from.
Relatively small collection.
Includes titles that are free only with Audible.
Digitalbook.io (formerly Librophile) is a directory that makes it easy to find public domain audiobook downloads. You can download the whole audiobook, play just a clip, or open the book as a podcast.
I like that I can browse by trending or popular audiobooks to find one I might like, or look through the list of genres, authors, or languages. This website is incredibly clean and easy to use. I never have any difficulty finding something interesting.
There are over 100,000 items here, and while some are audiobooks, others are regular eBooks.
Listen to specific chapters without having to download all of them.
Several ways to find a specific title.
Receive new audiobooks by podcast.
Available in many languages.
Works on mobile devices.
Can't sort by most popular.
LibriVox has a huge selection of free audiobooks that are recordings of volunteers who have read chapters from books that are in the public domain.
You can find one by searching by title, author, genre/subject, or language. You can also browse all the titles in the catalog, view only the most additions, and subscribe to new releases as podcasts.
Once you reach a book's description page, you can read more about it and even listen to the chapters individually without having to download each of them.
However, if you do want to download the whole audiobook, every chapter included, you can do so in a ZIP file, directly from LibriVox. Some are also available through a torrent and M4B file.
Something I like about this site, that I recommend you use too, is the advanced search tool. It lets you find a book in any genre by searching for keywords and other things like language and status (to make sure you get fully finished books).
Most of the time, books download as MP3 files (or sometimes WMA or AAC files) that can play on your computer, tablet, phone, iPod, or MP3 player. There are free audio converter software programs you can use if you need the audiobook to be in a different file format.
These books are also available through a mobile app for iOS and Android, so you can download them to your phone or tablet, or stream them on the go.
Lets you borrow audiobooks free from your local library.
Works with tens of thousands of libraries.
Listen from the website or the app.
Includes free audiobooks samples.
Must have a library card from a supported library.
If your local library has a subscription to OverDrive (check OverDrive's library finder to find out), then this is a great place to find over 500,000 free audiobook downloads of recent fiction and non-fiction books, including bestsellers.
You'll check these out just like you would a library book, and they'll be returned at the end of the loan period. You can even do it all from the Libby mobile app for iOS and Android.
One thing I can't pass up mentioning is how easy searching for audiobooks here can be. Not only are you able to sort the list by popularity and release date, filters let you ensure that it's just the audiobooks (not e-books) that you see, and they can be in a specific language and/or by a particular publisher or creator.
Loyal Books
Multiple language options.
Makes finding the top 100 audiobooks easy.
Audiobooks are organized in several genres.
Thousands of choices.
Few sorting options.
Lots of website ads.
It's easy to use Loyal Books (formerly Books Should Be Free) to download free audiobooks. You can view the audiobooks by the language, the Loyal Books top 100 , and by genre like Children , Fiction , Fantasy , Mystery , and more than a dozen others.
You can listen to these books on their website, download MP3s of the chapters altogether at once in one ZIP file, download the whole audiobook in one M4B file for iPhones and iPods, save specific chapters only, and even get the book through an RSS reader. There's also a Loyal Books mobile app for iOS and Android.
These are public domain books, so you might not see anything here that differs from the other public domain audiobook websites I've already mentioned.
Great for kids.
Includes text with the audiobook.
New audiobooks are released often.
Very limited compared to most other audiobook websites.
If you're looking for free audiobooks for kids, then Storynory should be your first stop. The selection includes original stories, fairy tales, classic stories, educational books, and some small stories for the very little ones.
You can download audiobooks here, stream them directly from the website, or use Apple Podcasts to listen to the Storynory podcasts . There's also an app for iOS devices, but it's not free.
See ratings and read reviews.
No website ads.
Requires an account.
Small collection.
Chirp is used mainly to purchase audiobooks, but they also have this awesome one-page list of free titles. Some of the books are from John Grisham, Ernest Hemingway, Agatha Christie, and H. G. Wells.
Each download page includes a sample of the audiobook, a full description, and reviews by other listeners.
While it might feel like you're paying for these because they work through a traditional checkout page, they're free to download if they say FREE on them. You can stream from the web page or use the mobile app.
Google Play
Two simple genres.
Great for existing Google Play Books users.
M4A exporting is an option.
Very small collection.
If you like to keep your book collection in your Google account to read in the Google Play Books app, you'll enjoy the free options offered to you.
Visit the link below, and then scroll down to the Free in fiction or Free in nonfiction section to see the free audiobooks Google offers. There aren't many, but they are totally free and legal, and will be added to your account in just a few moments.
Listen to these audiobooks through the Google Play Books website or with the app for Android or iOS. If you use the website, you can export an audiobook to M4A to play it elsewhere.
Internet Archive
Has thousands of audiobooks.
Several sorting options for finding the perfect audiobook.
Lets you filter the audiobook downloads by certain criteria.
Usually multiple audio format options when downloading.
Can be downloaded in bulk or by individual chapter.
Many audiobooks are poorly named and hard to recognize at first glance.
There aren't many non-English audiobook downloads.
The Internet Archive also has a ton of free audiobook downloads that you can browse through by subject, keywords, or using the search box.
My favorite way to find books here is by sorting by view count to find the most popular ones. Some of those include The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes, Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, Jane Eyre, The Swiss Family Robinson, Moby Dick, The Art of War, and Dracula .
Some are available in multiple formats so that you can download the book in MP3 or OGG format, for example.
The MindWebs page is one part of the Internet Archive that has several dozen classic sci-fi audiobooks.
Free Classic Audio Books
Some audiobooks are available in multiple audio formats.
Perfect place for classic audiobooks.
You can download individual chapters as well as whole books.
Not as many audiobooks as similar websites.
Website isn't fun or easy to use because there aren't graphics.
Several broken links.
This free audiobook website specializes in classic and fiction audiobooks and you can view them by most popular, recently added, or by author's last name.
Some examples include Romeo and Juliet, The Wind in the Willows, The Mysterious Affair at Styles , and Autobiography of Mark Twain .
All the audiobooks here can be downloaded as an MP3 file and some of them as an M4B file for iOS devices. To download hundreds of their audiobooks at once and support the site, you can get all the short stories on a DVD .
Light Up Your Brain
Audiobooks are geared toward kids.
A text version is available below each audiobook.
Most audiobooks are under 10 minutes.
Unhelpful if you're looking for adult books.
Site is overloaded with ads.
Light Up Your Brain has several clearly read, short, free audiobooks that are just for kids. Stream them or download the audiobooks to your computer.
One thing I like is that a transcription of the stories are provided on the same page as the audio stream. This is great if you like to read along to what you're listening to.
There are also some free games for kids here that are all made to challenge their minds and keep their brains active.
LearnOutLoud
Sorting and filtering options.
Over a dozen categories of free audiobooks.
No user account necessary.
Lists all the free books together.
You won't find newer releases here.
I like using LearnOutLoud for free audiobook downloads because I can access the download in just a few minutes. This is because there's no need for a user account, and the site is built well enough that it's super easy to search through the 4,000+ titles that are available.
Something else I want to mention are the unique audiobook categories. Beyond the normal ones like history and science, are others like travel, arts & entertainment, philosophy, and sports & hobbies.
Some of the more popular free audiobooks you can get here are from authors like Napoleon Hill, C.S. Lewis, Earl Nightingale, and Marcus Aurelius.
There's a huge selection.
Get two audiobooks completely free.
They're yours to keep forever.
Listen from a mobile device or computer.
The trial period is only for one month.
Limited to two downloads.
Must pay after the trial to keep downloading audiobooks.
This one isn't technically free forever , but it is free for 30 days. I include Audible because of its great selection of audiobooks. You'll be able to find just about any title you're looking for, including bestsellers and new releases.
After the trial, you can get one book each month for $14.95 /month, no matter the price of the book. You can download any audiobook of your choice, plus any two Audible originals, for free during that time.
Don't want a trial? See Audible's free audiobooks for a small collection of books that you don't even need a trial for.
Open Culture
Hundreds of free audiobooks.
Audiobooks are listed in alphabetical order for easy reading.
Can't sort or filter the list of audiobooks.
No option to search through the list.
Some are only streams, not downloads.
Open Culture has 1,000 fiction, non-fiction, and poetry audiobooks you can download for free. Just scroll down the alphabetized list to browse through everything they have to offer.
These audiobook downloads are located on a variety of other websites, so some of them may be direct links to the MP3 while others might be streamed from its download page but not available for download.
I'm not a fan of the barebones list because I can't search or filter anything. But it is nice to see everything on a single page.
Besides free audiobooks, this site also has free online movies, courses, language lessons, and eBooks.
Easy to use website.
Access from a variety of devices.
Lots of genres to pick from.
Helpful sorting and filtering options.
Includes a kids mode.
Requires a valid library card.
Much like OverDrive, listed above, hoopla has thousands of free audiobook downloads, but only if you have a library card at a supporting library.
Browse hoopla's most popular audiobooks for titles like The Coworker, Harry Potter, Finders Keepers, Never Lie, and The Roaring Days of Zora Lily . I also like to dig through hoopla's trending audiobooks page when I'm not sure where to start. In addition to those pages are genres and collections, such as career building , family fun , celebrity memoirs , and learn something new .
When searching through these free audiobooks, you can filter the results by user rating, release date, date added, and language. There's also a Children's Titles Only toggle to show just kid-friendly audiobook downloads.
These audiobooks can be streamed from your computer or on various devices.
Project Gutenberg
Provides a massive source of free downloads.
Supports lots of languages.
Lets you save audiobook chapters individually or download the entire book.
Ad-free website.
Some audiobooks are read by a computer, and so aren't as fluid or easy to listen to.
Most chapters don't have descriptive titles.
Project Gutenberg has audiobooks that are read by humans and some that are computer-generated. These are public domain books that have been turned into audiobooks that are now available for free for anyone who's interested.
The Project Gutenberg Open Audiobook Collection lets you listen to these books through Spotify, Apple Podcasts, and other services. My preference when downloading audiobooks from this website is to browse the human-read books .
There are several formats to download the book in, and you can save it to your computer or an online storage site like Google Drive.
ThoughtAudio
Provides PDF transcripts of the audiobooks.
Includes classic audiobooks.
Lets you stream directly from the website.
Must download each chapter individually; no bulk download option.
No obvious download button.
Some are videos that are harder to download.
Very small collection with infrequent updates.
ThoughtAudio has classic works of literature and philosophy books available for download as free audiobooks. You can browse the whole list or search for books, as well as see them in order of those that were recently added to the collection.
To get these audiobooks, you have to either listen to them on the website or download them in installments by right-clicking each part that you want to save. Unfortunately, many of these are actually embedded YouTube videos, meaning there isn't a download button (unless you have YouTube Premium ) and they're only streamable.
PDF transcripts for these audiobooks are also available for download.
Provides audiobooks that normally cost.
Lets you filter the audiobooks results by language.
Lots of filtering options for styles, character info, etc.
Most audiobooks are not free.
Difficult to find just the free audiobooks.
Must sign in to download books.
Scribl is a very different audiobook website because while there are some free audiobooks, most of them come at a cost. It's really a hit-or-miss type of situation when you look for free audio eBooks here.
However, I've included it here because you might find unique books that aren't free anywhere else. Just make sure to grab them quickly because as books get more popular, Scribl's CrowdPricing model puts a price on them.
Because Scribl has other things, too, like eBooks and podcasts, you want to make sure to filter the results to only show audiobooks. All audiobooks automatically come with the eBook at no cost.
There are several ways to filter the results to show only the books you're interested in listening to. For example, maybe you're only interested in space-themed English books set in the late 1900s that have a female main character. Set those filters and see what shows up!
There are mobile apps if you want to listen from your phone.
Once its own audiobook site, Podiobooks.com is part of Scribl .
AudioFile SYNC
Encourages kids to keep reading in the summer.
Gives away two audiobooks every week in the summer.
You can sign up for alerts to know when new audiobooks are available.
Audiobooks aren't available all year long.
Limits your audiobook downloads to two per week.
Audiobook SYNC is a free summer reading program meant for kids 13 and older, but anyone can take part in it to get free audiobook downloads.
Two free audiobooks are given away every week over the summer. It's a perfect way for kids to keep their comprehension skills sharp before returning to school, but also provides a way for adults to grab some free audio eBooks.
You can sign up for email alerts to get reminded when SYNC releases new titles. Browse the archives to see previous years' free books. The books are usable through OverDrive's Sora app .
There are lots of other websites that offer free audiobooks that you can download through torrent websites. However, you should know that while that method of sharing books (or anything, like music and movies) may seem completely fine, it's normally illegal in most countries and is typically considered an unsafe method for sharing files since it's a common way to transmit malware.

The 20+ best places to find free audiobooks online.
It’s not hard to see why audiobooks have recently grown in popularity: there’s something uniquely magnetic about stories brought to life by professional actors who can add texture to various personalities. If you want to absorb stories while you walk, do your chores, or lie down with your eyes closed, audiobooks are your portable friends.
While audiobooks are generally more expensive than ebooks or print books, we can help you minimize your spending (and maximize your library) — start by browsing through this list of the best websites to find free audiobooks online!
This music streaming giant hosts a number of audiobooks on their service , and have even entered the game by producing their own series of high-quality, professional audiobooks . Both of these lists feature public domain works, meaning their 95 year copyright has expired and they’ll be fairly old classics — so put your sophisticated hat on, and get ready to start checking books off your ‘ books to read before you die ’ list.
Spotify also houses a large number of short story podcasts featuring works from around the world, so it’s worth searching for the authors or stories you’re interested in on Spotify’s search bar. A great starting point is the 1001 Classic Short Stories and Tales podcast. Just remember that you’ll need a (free) Spotify account to listen to any Spotify content.
2. LibriVox
LibriVox ’s recordings are all made by volunteers, so audio quality can vary, and certain voices or accents can be a little difficult to understand if English isn’t your native language. That said, this nonprofit service provides a vast trove of free audiobooks with the mission of making audiobooks more accessible online, and was a pioneer in recording public domain books for the general public. If you have any trouble navigating their website, they also upload their recordings to YouTube — you can check out their channel here . And hey, if you’re feeling grateful, you can even volunteer to read a book yourself!
Looking for something new to read?
Trust real people, not robots, to give you book recommendations.
Or sign up with an email address
Okay, we get that not everyone feels like reading the classics. If you’re looking for contemporary audiobooks, or you’re after a specific title that isn’t in the public domain, Amazon’s Audible offers a massive number of professionally narrated books. Though it’s ordinarily a paid service, you can sign up for a 30-day trial that comes with a free audiobook and access to a bunch of perks like Audible’s fiction podcasts (we recommend Sour Hall , based on a story by Naomi Booth) and a further selection of free audiobooks for Alexa users .
Lit2Go is a free collection of public domain books, offered by the Florida Center for Instructional Technology at USF. Lit2Go’s collection includes some wonderful classic children’s books like The Secret Garden , The Story of Doctor Dolittle , Little Women , and Peter Pan . Adults are spoiled for choice, too, with some of the best books of all time : to give you a glimpse, you’ll find classics like Great Expectations , Moby Dick , Dracula , and Wuthering Heights in their library.
5. Audiobooks.com
Audiobooks.com is another service you ordinarily have to pay for, but their generous trial offer includes 3 free audiobooks. Like Audible, this is ideal if you’re after specific contemporary releases, or don’t particularly fancy the classics. Their professional-quality audiobooks are narrated by experienced voice actors, so it’s hard to go wrong no matter what you select. Audiobooks for your next road trip , anyone?
6. BBC Sounds
BBC Sounds is a free new app by the BBC. It’s now the home of its radio channels, hosting a wide variety of radio shows, podcasts, and even audiobooks. The BBC has a long history of working with the most prolific actors in the UK to provide dramatizations for radio, and it’s now branching out to free abridged audiobooks . As long as you don’t mind listening to abridged editions, you’re guaranteed some absolutely top-quality listening.
7. Rakuten Kobo
Operating similarly to other subscription services, Kobo’s audiobook list is quite extensive, so you’re probably going to find whatever it is you’re looking for here. Like Audible, it’s normally a paid service, but a free trial can get you a high-quality complimentary audiobook, so it’s worth a try! Just remember to cancel your subscription before you’re charged (and the same goes for all other trial periods mentioned in this post).
8. Open Culture
Open Culture has done all the compiling for you, and rounded up a long list of free audiobooks available on the web. For that reason, you’ll see some overlap with the public domains books found on the rest of this list — but their list is so incredibly handy that you’ll get over it.
9. Learn Out Loud
Learn Out Loud ’s mission is to offer free multimedia for educational purposes, and they’ve been doing a great job of it since 2005. Their website features over 3,000 free audiobooks for you to expand your horizons, and if you’re feeling flexible with your listening habits, you can also check out their broader directory of audio and video content : in addition to audiobooks, it lists lectures, courses, speeches, and so much more.
10. All You Can Books
Think buffet, but books. Like Audible, Kobo, and Audiobooks.com, this is a paid service. However, signing up for a free 30-day trial with All You Can Books means that you are free to consume as many audiobooks as you can within that period of time — and yes, that’s a challenge!
🚨We do have to note two things, though:
- Despite the fact that this service provides more than just public domain books, its 40,000 audiobooks don’t tend to include hot new releases, which may be a significant drawback for many readers.
- Many of this service’s online reviewers say they had trouble cancelling their trial, or had difficulty getting through to customer service when they’ve subsequently been charged for failing to cancel, so be careful. Don’t leave cancelling to the last day of your trial!
11. OverDrive
OverDrive is a distributor of digital content to libraries. If you’re a member of your local public library, you may have access to OverDrive through your online account — that’s something to ask your librarian about. They’ve also launched an app called Libby to help facilitate a smoother reading experience for their users. This is an excellent, professional-quality resource that includes old classics and contemporary releases alike. And most important of all, you’ll make your librarian happy!
12. Scribl
Scribl is an online retailer of ebooks and audiobooks — but over half of their listed audiobooks are available to download for free, so their site is well worth a browse. Many of the books they list are by indie authors , so if you do listen to their offerings, make sure to leave a review. Reviews mean the world to indie authors!
🎁 If free books in exchange for a review sound like your kind of thing, why not sign up to be a Reedsy Discovery reviewer ? There’s a whole bunch of ebooks to choose from.
13. Free Classic Audiobooks
Still hungering for the classics? Free Classic Audiobooks is a straightforward website that’s just what it says on the tin: it allows you to download MP3 or M4B files of classic works. Sure, it’s just another option for public domain books, but the great thing about having so many options is that you can really take your pick of narrator if you hate someone’s voice. The web is spoiling you. Appreciate it.
14. Storynory
Educational content, fairy tales, full-length audiobooks: Storynory has your child’s audiobook needs covered. From Oscar Wilde’s tales to Greek, Indian, or Norse mythology, little readers are bound to find something they’re happy with in this wonderful collection. In fact, we might catch up on some mythology ourselves. It’s never too late.
15. Project Gutenberg
Project Gutenberg is the world’s oldest digital library, and run by volunteers. Like many of the services above, it provides exclusively public domain works, but it stands out because of its linguistic diversity — the site provides audiobooks in 50+ languages . Do check that the audiobook you select is narrated by a human, though, as this website also lists computer-generated recordings that are nothing if not a bizarre experience. (Okay, you’re probably curious, so here’s a computer-read version of Middlemarch by George Eliot . Enjoy!🤖)
16. Mind Webs
Mind Webs used to be a dramatized radio programme hosted by Michael Hanson. Its archive of over 100 speculative and sci-fi short stories is now available online, and it makes for magnificent listening. These high-quality half-hour shows are guaranteed to transport fans of sci-fi audiobooks into different worlds.
Sync is an annual summer reading marathon for teens, held by AudioFile Magazine in collaboration with OverDrive. (Don't worry, it doesn’t really have to be a marathon: you can simply choose to read some books and not others.) You can learn more about how it works on Sync’s FAQ page , but the gist of it is that participants gain free access to two thematically linked audiobooks every week over the course of the summer.
18. World Book Day
You'd be wrong if you assumed that World Book Day only offers audiobooks for a single day. Instead, they provide a selection of free listens for children for six months, starting mid-February (with the exception of books published by Penguin and Hachette, which only stay up for one month). From picture books to options for teens, they cover a wide age range — and all of them are professional recordings.
19. Digitalbook
You may remember Digitalbook from the old days when it was called Librophile — it’s a website that operates as a search engine for free audiobooks in the public domain. Through their site, you can find specific titles from the various sites listed here, as well as retailer sites like Amazon. With its focus on simplicity, Digitalbook really helps streamline the process of locating specific books.
20. RBDigital
RBDigital operates in the same way that OverDrive does: it works with local libraries, providing access to a large collection of professional-standard audiobooks. You’ll probably find that your library is subscribed to either RBDigital or OverDrive. Both boast excellent lists of reputable titles, so don’t worry, your library will have you covered whichever they choose!
21. Chirp Books
If you've heard of popular retailer of discount ebooks Bookbub , you'll be excited to know they also have a platform for discounted audiobooks. It's called Chirp Books , and you can sign up to it for free. If you're based in the US or Canada, you'll have access to their catalog of free titles, which at the time of writing includes books by Walt Whitman, John Grisham, and Carmen Maria Machado. The rest of the audiobooks on their platform are available to buy at steep discounts (up to 95%), so there's plenty of options to browse. In fact, the folks over at Chirp have sent us a discount code for any Reedsy readers to claim a discount on their first purchase, so you can use the code REEDSY30 for 30% off.
We hope these resources lead you to some amazing reads — do check out our lists of free Kindle books and the best places to find free books online if you’re looking for more freebies, and happy reading!

The fascinating lives of others are lived again
If you want to learn more about a famous person or just get into the detail of someone else’s life, then you can download a memoir or biography book (and autobiography books) from obooko.
Autobiography books give us the real account of what actually happened as the author is also the main character. We get a true window into someone else’s world. Take a look at Life in the Shadows of a Corporate Lawyer to get the story of the struggles of a lawyer with alcohol problems at time when getting corporate counsel positions was very difficult unless you were part of the old boy’s network.
Sometimes a biography will give us a perspective of a world changing event from someone who was there. Singing Magic tells the story of a Canadian girl who moved to South Africa during the ending of apartheid and brings us a fresh view of what real, normal people were going through at this time of change. We gain insight to what things were really like, unedited by news media.
There is no better way to satisfy your curiosity about other people than reading a book about them. Learn how they think and what drives them to do the things they do and use that knowledge to influence your own life – in some cases memoir books can be like having your own mentor, laying out the values to follow. In other cases, it might be a lesson in what not to do.
There are many biography books at obooko and this just gives a flavour of the diverse range of online story books that are available. Some will inspire you to want to do great things, others will make you sad and want to cry. Maybe some will make you angry enough to shout. What is certain is that you will get something to keep you wanting to turn the page and read more. Download these memoir and biography books from obooko today.
All titles in this category are legally licensed for free download in PDF ePub, & Kindle Formats.

The Best Biography Audiobooks to Educate, Fascinate, and Inspire
We’ve rounded up the most impressive subjects, the best authors, and some expert narrators to bring you the best biography audiobooks available on the market.
Biography is one of the most compelling genres in audio. The feeling of sinking into an expertly written bio and losing yourself in the life of a fascinating person—whether it be a great thinker, a trailblazing activist, a wartime hero, a brilliant inventor, or a little-known influential force—is completely unparalleled.
The best biographies are ranked not only by the scale and skill of their writing, but also by the strength of their subjects. In the audio world, these selections are also judged for the quality of their narrative performances, making those that rise to the top all the more excellent. From lighthearted entertainment to inspirational origin stories, these titles represent some of the best biography audiobooks available for your listening pleasure.
Genghis Khan and the Making of the Modern World
Genghis Khan is frequently thought of as the fierce leader of a savage nation; in reality, his rule was a lot more complex and progressive than most realize. Tasked with taking down Khan’s reputation, author Jack Weatherford has expertly assembled a researched account of the ruler’s legacy that is likely to surprise even those most familiar with his reign. Weatherford covers Khan’s innovations at home and abroad, from the invention of the decimal system to the establishment of domestic policies that abolished torture, encouraged religious freedom, and granted universal education to boys. With the practiced narration of three-time Audie Award winner Jonathan Davis, Genghis Khan and the Making of the Modern World is a paradigm-shifting profile with the potential to significantly impact any listener’s understanding of the world.
Hidden Figures
You’ve no doubt heard of astronauts like John Glenn or Neil Armstrong, the dauntless men who were among the first to explore space—but you might be unaware of the women who got them into orbit. Teams of female mathematicians worked diligently to provide the calculations necessary to fuel America’s dreams of space exploration. Among them were Dorothy Vaughan, Mary Jackson, Katherine Johnson, and Christine Darden, a group of African-American women who shared their mathematical talents at Langley Memorial Aeronautical Lab in Virginia while confronting the realities of oppressive Jim Crow laws. In Hidden Figures , Margot Lee Shetterly shines a much-needed and long-deserved light on the contributions of these women who had for so long been hidden by historical narratives, a biography that’s made all the more engaging with the performance of Hall of Fame narrator Robin Miles.
Walter Isaacson is one of the most acclaimed biographers in the world, while Edward Herrmann has won 22 Earphone Awards and multiple Audie Awards for his narration, as well as an Emmy, a Tony, and numerous other accolades for his stage and screen performances. So it’s no surprise that, paired together as they are here, Einstein: His Life and Universe merits a spot on our list. Winner of the 2008 Audie for Biography/Memoir, Isaacson’s probing profile adds new layers to one of history’s most famous scientists. Delving into previously unreleased personal letters that offer up new angles of the genius’s complicated personality, this biography is more than just a literary sketching of a famous man. Isaacson’s prose challenges listeners to consider the very nature of genius and creativity, and what these qualities might mean for the world today.
One of the most liberally interpreted and portrayed women in world history, Cleopatra has become notorious in pop culture as a conniving and murderous queen. In Cleopatra , Stacy Schiff masterfully occupies the dual roles of factual historian and wholly captivating storyteller as she separates truth and myth in an effort to capture the definitive profile of one of the world’s most influential rulers. Robin Miles’s performance is as smooth and regal as the audiobook’s subject, remaining cool and sophisticated while still portraying the passion that drove the many characters who moved in and out of Cleopatra’s life. The result is a sparkling, luxurious jewel of an audiobook that provides one of history’s most controversial figures the legacy she has always deserved.
Alexander Hamilton
Thanks to the international success of the Broadway hit Hamilton , most people now know how unique and extraordinary a life Alexander Hamilton lived—even by Founding Father standards. Yet until relatively recently, Hamilton’s legacy went largely unexamined. In fact, Ron Chernow’s biography Alexander Hamilton inspired the musical and reinvigorated the popularity of the nation’s first Secretary of the Treasury. At 35 hours long, this audiobook begins Hamilton’s story at his early childhood and remains with its subject throughout all the turbulent ups and downs of his remarkable life. With the help of the man with the golden voice —Audie Award-winning narrator Scott Brick—every moment of the story feels engrossing and essential to Chernow’s portraiture.
The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks
Henrietta Lacks died a poor tobacco farmer, so unknown that she was buried in an unmarked grave. Today, hers is one of the most well-known names in biological science, and her cells (which were taken without her consent or knowledge) have helped develop life-saving vaccines and contributed to cancer research, DNA mapping projects, and more. In this penetrating biography, performed by dual narrators and Hall of Fame greats Cassandra Campbell and Bahni Turpin, Rebecca Skloot compiles more than 10 years of research into revealing the staggering truth about how Lacks’s HeLa cells have been bought and sold, generating billions of medical research dollars, without her family having received a cent. The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks is a powerful and disturbing profile of American injustice, as well as a moving tribute to a woman who never imagined she would go on to change the world.
Biographizing a larger-than-life personality is no easy task, though many have tried. But this profile of the Tesla founder by veteran technology writer Ashlee Vance stands above the rest. Narrated by Fred Sanders, who enhances his already stellar performance with a pitch-perfect impression of the titular subject (South African accent and all), Elon Musk is arguably the definitive biography of the eccentric founder. This is also the first of Musk’s biographies with which he has been involved—initially, he declined requests, but after learning Vance had continued on undeterred and interviewed nearly 200 people, Musk was impressed by the author’s diligence and agreed to participate. Sanders does an expert job narrating the work with alternating dramatic flair and deep gravitas, which together with the well-researched content presents the richest picture of Elon Musk in existence to date.
Catherine the Great
Robert K. Massie is a practiced expert at profiling powerful Russians, with biographies like Peter the Great , Nicholas and Alexandra , and The Romanovs under his belt. Aided by the narrative prowess of Mark Deakins, Massie once again does a masterful job of profiling the fascinating rise of the young minor noblewoman who would one day become the universally revered Catherine the Great. Couched in all the splendor and luxury of 18th-century Russia, Massie’s narrative introduces listeners to Catherine as both the fiercely patriotic leader and intimate, vulnerable private person she was. Through richly illustrated prose and graceful, polished narration, Catherine the Great comes alive to both history scholars and the casually curious.
The Power Broker
If you’ve never heard of Robert Moses—despite his being one of the most influential men of the 20th century—don’t fret. Some of the most seasoned New Yorkers aren’t aware that their city, the metropolitan center of the world, was largely shaped by the astronomical force at the center of Robert Caro’s Pulitzer-winning biography. Moses’s life parallels the rise and fall of an empire. A promising young upstart who failed in his early attempts to enter politics, Moses painstakingly accumulated alternative sources of access and power until he became the single person responsible for the urban design of nearly all of New York City. He then lost everything as the world awoke to the environmental and functional complications he had wrought. It’s clear in Robertson Dean’s performance that the narrator is as fascinated by the story as anyone, which makes the listening experience all too easy to lose yourself in. Don’t be intimidated by this mammoth profile— The Power Broker is worth every minute of your investment.
The Autobiography of Malcolm X
Not just one of the best among biographies, The Autobiography of Malcolm X is one of the most influential and culturally important entries in American history. In this most recent reinvigoration, renowned actor Laurence Fishburne gives new life and gravitas to the civil rights leader’s words. In a country whose history books often relegate his importance to his assassination, Malcolm X’s firsthand writings are essential to understanding both the man and the movement to which he was central. This powerful autobiography includes explorations of race, society, culture, and work that remain as relevant today as when they were written, and listeners will recognize Malcolm X’s often-referenced quotes that gain new meaning and force within their original context.
A Beautiful Mind
Those familiar with the Russell Crowe film of the same name will be shocked at how much more there is to the emotional and thrilling story of genius mathematician John Nash. A Beautiful Mind , Sylvia Nasar’s biography upon which the movie was based, traces Nash’s meteoric rise to fame, his subsequent public mental health episode at the height of his notoriety, his tumble into obscurity, and how, after years of silence, he made a triumphant return and went on to win the Nobel Prize. With more space to articulate the nuances of Nash’s life and experiences, Nasar uses her subject’s story as an entry point to bring listeners into a discussion about the very nature of prodigy and the relationship between genius and madness. Anna Fields performs each person in Nash’s life like a fiction narrator performs characters, giving each their own voice and personality, which makes this remarkable biography an even more artful and dramatic listening experience.
The Woman Who Smashed Codes
In a sprawling biography that plays more like a work of fiction, Jason Fagone tracks the husband-and-wife duo who invented cryptology and employed it for the American government in efforts to aid the Allies in winning World War II. Particularly, Fagone focuses on Elizebeth Smith, who began her codebreaking career as an agent helping to catch black market smugglers during Prohibition and went on to expose a number of covert Nazi spy rings in countries around the world. Brought to life by award-winning narrator and fan favorite Cassandra Campbell, The Woman Who Smashed Codes is filled with puzzles, glyphs, and codes that just might leave you wondering how well you would fare against equally complex ciphers.
The Stranger in the Woods
Biographies are typically about well-known public figures, but Christopher Knight’s notability comes from the fact that he was somehow completely unknown to even a single human for nearly 30 years. Narrator Mark Bramhall’s hushed, hermetic tone makes him the perfect voice for the story of the man who successfully disappeared into the woods of Maine and sustained himself alone in a tent, solely on his own survival instinct and what little food he could steal from cabins nearby. The Stranger in the Woods is a fascinating survivalist tale, and more. Author Michael Finkel uses Knight’s story to explore connection versus solitude and what humans truly need—beyond food and water—in order to live well.
Prairie Fires
Since her wholesome familial autobiographies are almost universally read and nearly synonymous with her name, you might think you know all there is to know about Laura Ingalls Wilder. But through the unfiltered eye of an outsider, Prairie Fires brings the dramatic and tumultuous life of America’s most famous pioneer girl into full light for the first time. As the editor of the Library of America edition of the Little House series , author Caroline Fraser is perhaps more familiar with Ingalls Wilder than anyone else alive. Meanwhile, narrator Christina Moore’s broad background in children’s lit (you may recognize her as the voice behind classics like Practical Magic , Go Ask Alice , and Julie of the Wolves ) makes her the perfect selection to illuminate the woman behind one of the world’s most treasured storybook collections.
The Mayor of Castro Street
A trailblazer in the truest sense of the word, Harvey Milk was the first ever openly gay politican elected in the state of California. His life and legacy have served as an inspiration to all those who fight diligently for social justice and in The Mayor of Castro Street , journalist Randy Shilts explores every facet of Milk’s career and impact. Shilts captures not only the tumultuous political climate of the era but also the fight for gay rights and the hope that Milk embodied for the queer community. Audie-nominated narrator Marc Vietor lends his talents to this exceptional, compassionate biography, offering a performance that is fittingly compelling and spirited.
Be Free or Die
In Be Free or Die , author Cate Lineberry chronicles the life and impact of Robert Smalls, a young slave who commandeered a Confederate steamship and fearlessly delivered the ship to Union forces at a nearby blockade. He, his family, and the crew of slaves on board were freed upon reaching Union territory—and Smalls is now recognized as one of America’s bravest unsung heroes. Smalls, who went on to become the first Black captain of an Army ship, emphasized the significance of freedom and just how far one man would go to secure the liberation of himself and his family. J.D. Jackson’s clear, resonant narration brings an additional depth and dynamism to Lineberry’s narrative.
Mountains Beyond Mountains
In Mountains Beyond Mountains , Pulitzer Prize-winning author Tracy Kidder tells the story of a man who took on one of society’s most complicated problems and managed to change the world. While enrolled in medical school, Paul Farmer found a passion for global health. But rather than taking up volunteer efforts or doing charity work on the side, Dr. Farmer threw his entire weight into becoming a one-man force for curing infectious diseases in developing countries around the globe, ultimately going on to found international health justice organization Partners in Health. Kidder illustrates Farmer’s life against the glorious backdrop of his myriad travels, bringing the listener through Haiti, Peru, Cuba, Russia, and beyond, while chameleon-like narrator Paul Michael fully embodies every character Dr. Farmer meets along the way. The result is a whirlwind travel epic of superhuman empathy—one that will inspire and empower you to believe in the power of what one person can accomplish.
Perhaps one of the least-known of Zora Neale Hurston’s works, Barracoon was published more than 50 years after the author’s death and details the life of Cudjo Lewis, believed to be the last living survivor of the Atlantic slave trade. Hurston traveled to Alabama in 1927 to interview Lewis, and the subsequent documentation is one of the only firsthand accounts of the Middle Passage. In almost deceptively smooth tones, Robin Miles narrates Lewis’s harrowing account—from the childhood in Africa he was stolen from, through the trans-Atlantic journey aboard a packed slave ship, and his years in slavery in the American South.
To say Chinese Communist leader Mao Zedong was a looming global presence is not an exaggeration; he is often remembered for the larger-than-life portraits he commissioned for prominent public placement, where he could watch over his citizens. Already a controversial and dictatorial figure in history, Mao’s reputation receives an overhaul—and not a positive one—in Mao: The Unknown Story . Wife-and-husband coauthors Jung Chang and Jon Halliday spent 10 years in conversation with Mao’s personal acquaintances and scouring archives, uncovering and corroborating never-before-heard accounts. Their meticulously researched profile portrays the Chairman as obsessively power-hungry and his rise to leadership as not a serendipitous act of fate, but the result of a cold, calculated amassing of power that destroyed anything and everything in its path. Perhaps most shockingly, Chang and Halliday calculate that Mao was responsible for more than 70 million deaths in peacetime, surpassing the fatality count of some of the worst atrocities on record.
The Journey of Crazy Horse
Most Americans know Crazy Horse as the Native American warrior who led the Lakota tribe to victory against American soldiers at the Battle of Little Bighorn. But limiting his reputation to this single victory is to erase who Crazy Horse was: a strong and silent but generous and kind leader whose hard-earned influence was what allowed him to rally his community against the looming threat of Manifest Destiny. It is through author Joseph Marshall’s personal connection as a Lakota Indian that listeners can gain access via The Journey of Crazy Horse to accounts passed down in a closely guarded oral tradition, and learn the hidden details of Crazy Horse’s legacy.
A Woman of No Importance
Though her name might be unfamiliar to many, socialite-turned-spy Virginia Hall had an indelible impact on the Allied front and the lives of French citizens during World War II. Author Sonia Purnell crafts a meticulous history of Hall’s life and wartime contributions in A Woman of No Importance , which is narrated in the melodious English accent of BAFTA-nominated actress Juliet Stevenson. An agent in the Special Operations Executive (also known as “Churchill’s Secret Army'' or the “Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare”), Hall built networks of spies throughout France and called military strikes. Unparalleled in her bravery, Hall even returned to France after her cover had been blown, seeking to help liberate residents from Nazi occupation.
Though Thomas Edison is commonly known for inventing the lightbulb, the genius who scientists consider to be the father of modern electricity is Nikola Tesla. Wizard is the definitive Tesla biography, exploring the scientific marvel’s seemingly endless inventions: alternating current, fluorescent and neon lights, the Tesla coil, wireless telegraphy, and the system that first harnessed the massive power of Niagara Falls as electricity. Listeners will recognize familiar figures throughout, each played charismatically by narrator Simon Prebble, including Alexander Graham Bell, J.P. Morgan, George Westinghouse, and, of course, Edison. Author Marc J. Seifer also illustrates Tesla’s troubled later years, offering a complete picture of his subject as well as a moving portrait of the burden of brilliance.
The Book of Pride
Mason Funk’s The Book of Pride reads like a short story collection: the volume houses short but incredibly beautiful biographies of a number of queer icons that come together in a heartfelt history of the gay rights movement. From leaders and key activists to everyday participants in the battle for justice, this listen chronicles the depths of their bravery, perseverance, and resistance, highlighting how their singular courage paved the way for generations to follow. An inspiring recollection of the LGBTQIA+ community’s search for inclusivity, visibility, and acceptance in a world often rocked by prejudice and oppression, this listen—which is narrated by a host of narrators including the author, Robin Miles, and Kevin R. Free—is an absolute must for anyone interested in the fight for equality.
The Man Who Knew the Way to the Moon
In The Man Who Knew the Way to the Moon , author Todd Zwillich has written a humbly moving tribute to an unsung hero of the Apollo 11 mission: John C. Houbolt, the mid-level engineer who championed the landing strategy without which humans would never have landed on the celestial body. At just over three and a half hours, the listen is a short, sweet, and powerful David-and-Goliath tale of how one man’s infallible spirit led to an advancement for all mankind. Narrated by the author and accompanied by a dramatic and suspenseful soundtrack, this overlooked but essential piece of American history is not to be missed.
Some lives are so extraordinary that they demand a biography, and Louis Zamperini’s is one of them. Author Laura Hillenbrand’s profile of the young Army bombardier was turned into an acclaimed film, and it’s not hard to see why Unbroken captured so much attention. After going down over the Pacific, the young soldier survived more than a month at sea—only to drift ashore on Japanese-occupied territory, where he would be captured and tortured for another two years. Many others have perished under similar challenging circumstances, but against all odds, Zamperini survived. Edward Herrmann (who polished his narrative expertise as the voice of a wide variety of History Channel and PBS specials) brings gravitas to this truly unbelievable story of human resilience in the face of torture, pain, and hopelessness.
