What experience do I need to be successful as an online English teacher?

Teaching English online is a great option for new teachers.

Many teachers make the transition from the physical classroom to online, but many online teachers arrive with little or no previous teaching experience.

An interest in learning and development is always good to see. Maybe you coach a local sports team, or you’re a new parent or grandparent?

Whatever your previous life experience, if you love helping people better understand the world around them, you could have what it takes to be a great online English teacher.

Do I need a TEFL certification to teach English online?

TEFL stands for “Teaching English as a Foreign Language”, and it is a standard certification for English teachers.

To teach English with  EF Teach Online  you’ll need to have at least a 40- hour TEFL certificate or equivalent from an accredited source. It should be a general certificate rather than a skills-specific version, for example, a TEFL in Grammar.

If you don’t already have a TEFL you can submit your details in our online form and then start working on gaining your certification. This will need to be completed prior to teaching on the EF online teaching platform

The cost of the TEFL is not reimbursed.

How long is the contract for teaching online?

The contract for teaching online is offered for a six-month term with options for auto-renewal for each party. Teaching online is an independent contractor position.

Contractors are responsible for their own taxes, as no withholding is taken from payments.

Do I need to speak other languages to teach English online?

No, not at all. All teaching is done in English and all our teaching materials are written in English too. You’ll be required to fill out a short feedback form at the end of the lesson for students to review, but this is done in English too.

What is the application process to teach English with EF?

It’s pretty simple really. First, complete our form. Enter your details and upload your resume, degree certificate, and TEFL qualification - if you have it.

The British International School of Moscow was established in April 1994 and is a non–government educational institution licensed by the Moscow Department of Education. It is a Member of the Council of International Schools (CIS) and the European Council of International Schools (ECIS) and is in the process of applying for membersip to the Council of British International Schools (COBIS). The School is proud to have just celebrated its 20th anniversary.  

Throughout the years, through the medium of the English National Curriculum and the International Baccalaureate Diploma, the school has delivered a first-class education programme to students from the culturally diverse international community of Moscow. Currently, students of 70 nationalities study in the school.

The school offers a truly international education for pupils of all ages, from Nursery to the International General Certificate in Education and A Levels or the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme. The class sizes are small and allow for the curriculum to be differentiated to meet the individual needs of the students. English is the common language for learning although for most of the children it is their second, or even their third or fourth language. Those children who need specific support with the English language receive an EAL support programme. A high level of mutual understand­ing, respect, and an individual approach to each pupil creates a caring and well-disciplined learning environment.

BISM has a very high reputation in Moscow for the approach and quality of its education. They believe it should not just be about academic learning, but rather about the whole child and the school community. How to claim 15 hours free childcare including how to get your code

We’re making the  biggest investment  by a UK government into childcare in history, doubling the amount we expect to spend over the next few years from around £4 billion to around £8 billion each year.  

• Currently, eligible working parents of 3 and 4-year-olds can access 30 hours of childcare support.  
• From  April 2024 , eligible working parents of 2-year-olds will be able to access 15 hours childcare support.  
• From  September 2024 , 15 hours childcare support will be extended to eligible working parents with a child from 9-months-old.  
• From  September 2025 , support will reach 30 hours for eligible working parents with a child from 9-months-old up to school age.  

When can I apply?  

Applications are open until 31 March for eligible working parents of 2-year-olds to receive 15 hours free childcare starting from April 2024.  

From 1 April, eligible working parents whose children will be 2 or older by the 31 August, can apply to receive 15 hours childcare starting from September 2024.   

And from 12 May, eligible working parents whose children will be aged between 9- and 23-months old on 31st August, can apply to receive 15 hours childcare starting from September 2024.  

It’s important to remember that codes need to be renewed every three months, so parents applying close to 12 May will need to renew their code prior to the offer starting in September.  

How do I apply?   

You apply online here on   Gov.uk once you have checked our  eligibility criteria .  

You’ll need to make sure you have the following information to hand before starting the application:  

• your national insurance number (or unique taxpayer reference if you are self-employed)  
• the date you started or are due to start work  
• details of any government support or benefits you receive  
• the UK birth certificate reference number (if you have one) for your child.  

You may find out if you’re eligible straight away, but it can take up to 7 days.  

Once your application has been approved, you’ll get a code to give to your childcare provider.  

Eligible parents are also able to access Tax-Free Childcare through the same application system. You can apply for Tax-Free Childcare at any time. However, you don't need to apply for Tax-Free Childcare to be eligible to apply for the 15 hours childcare scheme.   

What happens once I receive my code?  

Once you receive your code, you’ll need to take it to your childcare provider, along with your National Insurance number and your child’s date of birth.  

Your childcare provider will process the code to provide your place.  

Places will be available for September in every area of the country, but a significant minority of settings hold waiting lists of over six months. If you have a preferred nursery for September, you should reach out now to secure a place for your child ahead of receiving your code.  

Your local authority can provide support for finding a government-funded place in your area.  

What if I’m already registered for Tax Free Childcare?  

Parents must reconfirm that they are still eligible for Tax-Free Childcare every 3 months.  

Parents who are already claiming Tax-Free Childcare and need to reconfirm their eligibility between 1 April and 12 May will be automatically issued a code in the post from HMRC soon after the 12 May.   

This is to ensure every parent can give their code to their provider in good time. This code will be valid to apply for 15 hours of government-funded childcare from September.   

If I receive a code in a letter from HMRC, does this make my code on my Childcare Account invalid?  

No. Both codes will be valid.   

Do I need to wait for my reconfirmation window to add another child to my account?  

A parent who is already using the childcare service for another child can add a new child to their account at any time.  

Your reconfirmation cycle for your current Tax-Free Childcare will not affect this.  

How are you making sure there will be enough childcare places for eligible parents?  

Parents that have a preferred place for September should reach out now to their local provider to secure a physical place for their child ahead of time.  

To make sure there are enough places available, we’re investing over £400 million in 2024-25 to increase the hourly rates paid to local authorities.  

The Institute for Fiscal Studies has independently reported that the average funding rates for two-year-olds and under 2s paid by government from April 2024 are projected to be substantially higher than the market rate paid by parents last year, and we have committed to further increases to provider rates for the next two years.  

We have also committed to increasing hourly funding rates over the next two years by an estimated £500 million, to make sure providers can increase places at each phase of the rollout.

As our job hunts increasingly take place online, the risk of encountering deceptive employment offers and rip-offs has grown.

Here are 13 sneaky online job scams that are all too easy to fall for — and tips to avoid them so you can keep cash in your wallet , where it belongs.

12 legit ways to make extra cash

Bogus career consultants

This scam often starts with someone posing as a consultant. Maybe they praise your resume, but suggest it can be improved. Then, they offer to refine it for a fee or refer you to some alleged expert.

These fraudsters also target job seekers who want to further their education or certifications.

The best way to avoid this scam is to be cautious about any unsolicited offers.

Fraudulent chat interviews

Fraudsters like to use messaging platforms such as Telegram and WhatsApp for phony job interviews because those can provide a level of anonymity. 

While these messaging tools are convenient for many purposes, genuine job offers rarely come through social media or chat apps.

If you get pinged through a chat platform, ask for a phone call and research the company before you agree to anything.

Data entry gigs that promise to pay a ton

Scammers frequently target the data entry industry, luring victims with promises of high-paying, low-skill jobs. They may even demand upfront fees for training or ask for sensitive banking information. 

Real, legitimate data entry jobs won’t do that. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, the median pay for an information clerk is $38,710 per year. If you see a salary well beyond that, be wary.

Email job scams

It’s not unusual to get emails from recruiters who found you on a job board. But that comes with a caveat: Some emails are designed to deceive you, asking for sensitive information.

Never share personal or financial information with unexpected contacts. Don’t click any links or call numbers. Instead, try to independently verify the information about the company and the job offer.

And don't rush: Scammers try to pressure you into quick decisions. Always research thoroughly.

Promises of big money for envelope stuffing

There is an odd scam promising a work-from-home job that pays big money if you stuff envelopes. The caveat is that you must pay an upfront fee for supplies and processing.

According to the Federal Trade Commission, just 10% of people who respond to this scam ever receive any type of payment.

Offers such as this are nothing more than nonsense that dupes people into parting with their money. Stay away.

Scammers love posting fake jobs. The approach can vary, but the offers usually appear on social media, where fraudsters can avoid the scrutiny that a legitimate job site will give them.

If you are asked to pay a fee to apply or to start the job, it’s a safe bet that the offer is a scam.

Scammers sometimes set up websites that mimic those of legitimate companies, only with slight alterations in the web address. That can make it tough to distinguish between real and fake sites.

Always look at the URL carefully. Hover over any link to closely examine the URL before clicking it.

If the company name is one you recognize as legitimate, Google the name and make sure you are going to the legitimate website. Once there, find the contact information and call the company directly to inquire about the job posting.

Local, state, and federal government jobs do not ask applicants for money.

Authentic federal government positions are accessible through official platforms such as USAJobs.gov website, although they may also be posted on broader job boards.

Imposters who pose as recruiters

In this scam, the person you’re talking to may not be who they say they are.

Imposters are excellent at assuming false identities in the context of job scams. They may impersonate agency affiliates, government officials, or recruiters. The goal is to get you to share personal information.

So, keep personal details to yourself unless you’re sure you can trust the person on the other end of the conversation.

Job placement swindles

Plenty of legitimate staffing agencies exist. However, others could be scammer organizations out to get you.

Some promote outdated or fake job opportunities and request upfront fees. Legitimate agencies don’t charge candidates.

If you're asked for a fee, it's a scam. Just turn around and explore other job-search avenues.

Pyramid schemes

Pyramid schemes are operations that masquerade as legitimate businesses. Their focus is on getting people to recruit more members into the scheme rather than on maximizing sales of an actual product.

Pyramid marketing is illegal and unsustainable, functioning on the premise that a few people at the top of the “pyramid” make money and everyone else loses cash. 

As always, you can avoid these by doing your homework and being suspicious of unrealistic promises of easy riches.

Phony reshipping jobs

In a reshipping scam, you receive and reship packages through a fraudulent company. The packages are usually pricey pieces purchased fraudulently with stolen credit cards.

If you participate in a reshipping scam, you might be subject to financial losses and even identity theft. Worse, you usually don’t even get paid. Just say “no” to these jobs.

Illegitimate work-from-home positions

The demand for work-from-home opportunities has surged since the pandemic. And that means scammers have found a new opportunity.

Be on the lookout for jobs that demand fees or purchases on your part to land the job. While providing your own home office equipment isn't unusual, legitimate employers usually don't ask for upfront payments for these items, promising to reimburse you in your first paycheck.

1 in 3 companies are ditching college degree requirements for salaried jobs

It's becoming easier to get a corporate job without a college degree : 1 in 3 companies say they no longer list educational requirements on their salaried job postings, according to Payscale's latest compensation best practices report .

Still, it's most common for companies, 41%, to say college degree requirements depend on the job, while a minority, 22%, say all of their jobs have a degree as a requirement. Payscale's analysis surveyed more than 5,700 business leaders and HR pros in late 2023.

As companies deprioritize college degree requirements, they're turning their attention to hiring candidates with the right skillsets, Ruth Thomas, a pay equity strategist with PayScale, said during a briefing with reporters.

The move could benefit the roughly 62% of U.S. workers who don't have a degree, according to the U.S. Census Bureau.

While no-degree hiring doesn't apply to jobs that never required a degree, or professions like doctors or lawyers, it could have a big impact on hiring for middle-tier jobs like construction managers, sales supervisors, web developers, cybersecurity and IT help desk specialists, CNBC reports .

Walmart, the country's largest private employer, is one company that stands out for its broad efforts to remove education requirements on jobs. The company with 1.6 million employees said it was " rewriting job descriptions for our campus (headquarters) jobs to factor in the skills people possess, alongside any degrees they hold," in a  corporate blog post  in late September. "To be considered for the job, you can have a related college degree or possess the skills needed for the job, whether through previous experience or other forms of learning."

Other major employers, particularly in tech, have moved toward skills-based hiring in recent years, including Google, IBM, Tesla, GM and Accenture.

But removing education requirements doesn't automatically lead to more equitable hiring among people without degrees. Recent research from Burning Glass Institute and Harvard Business School shows candidates without degrees aren't getting as many good job offers as those with degrees.

"Unfortunately, what we found is for the most part, employers are still hiring the same people they were before," Matt Sigelman, president of the Burning Glass Institute, told CNBC .

"Many organizations still have a lot left to do in terms of categorizing skills in their organizations so that we can develop full end-to-end skills-based pay strategies," Thomas says.

Overall, business leaders say compensation is their top challenge of 2024, with half saying it's a high-priority investment area in the coming year, closely followed by recruitment and retention.
