Apple’s next iPad event is May 7
Apple just dropped an invite for its next event. Scheduled for May 7, the “Let Loose” presentation appears to be happening exclusively online — something that became standard fare for the company during the pandemic. Over the last couple of years, however, Apple has returned to in-person events, including WWDC, which kicks off in Cupertino on June 10 .
If this one is, indeed, online only, it’s likely to be on the smaller side, focusing on one or two select products. The company is no doubt saving some bigger news for its developer conference, happening almost exactly a month later.
The artwork features a prominent image of a hand holding an Apple Pencil, accompanied by the apparently handwritten tagline, “Let Loose.” We’re way overdue for a new iPad or four, as the company hasn’t updated the tablet line since 2022. M2 and M3 chips are strong possibilities, heading to the iPad Pro and iPad Air models, respectively.
As for the Pencil, this month’s early iOS 17.5 beta includes a reference to a “squeeze” feature for the upcoming fourth-generation version of Apple’s stylus. Other rumored upgrades include an updated version of the Pro’s Magic Keyboard case.
The event kicks off May 7 at 7 a.m. PT . Stay tuned to TechCrunch for more info.

Everything Apple announced at its October 'Scary Fast' event (and what wasn't unveiled)
It's been an eventful year for Apple's computing line; the company unveiled 14- and 16-inch MacBook Pro models with M2 Pro and M2 Max configurations back in January, the first-ever 15-inch MacBook Air along with new Mac Studio and Mac Pro models at WWDC in June , and a Vision Pro headset that may eventually replace all the machines listed above.
Also: Professionals should buy Apple's cheapest M3 MacBook Pro for one reason, and one reason only
Apparently, that's not enough hardware for consumers to throw their wallets at, because what the company announced today might be its most enticing ensemble of Mac computers yet. During an evening keynote at Apple's Cupertino headquarters, Tim Cook and several product executives took the virtual stage to unveil new MacBook Pros and a 24-inch iMac -- all powered by M3 processors.
The new silicon is based on TSMC's 3nm process and will surely become the standard chipset across Apple's upcoming Mac hardware. More importantly, the lineup of new Mac computers comes at a time when other chipmakers, including Qualcomm and Intel , are readying up high-performance computing chips of their own.
For a recap of all the products unveiled during Apple's "Scary Fast" event -- and what didn't make the director's cut -- see the list below.
What products did get announced
M3 chips in all sizes.
At the center of Monday's hardware announcements was Apple's newest silicon: M3, M3 Pro, and M3 Max. The new M3 chips, built on TSMC's 3nm process, succeed the M2 chips' 5nm process and fall in line with the new iPhone 15 Pro's A17 Pro chip.
The cutting-edge transistors of the 3nm process allow Apple to improve the GPU performance of its Mac computers -- up to 1.8 faster graphics performance than the M2 chip. The efficiency cores get a big leap, too, with a 30% improvement compared to the M2 series and a 50% improvement over the M1 series.

The M3 chipsets also introduce Dynamic Caching, which allows the processors to adaptively allocate bandwidth based on the tasks at hand. That's compared to traditional memory management, which prioritizes a single program at a time.
The M3 also supports Mesh Shading and hardware-accelerated Ray Tracing for improved graphics rendering, especially for creative workflows and gaming.
Much like the M2 processors that classify Apple's latest Mac computers by performance and efficiency, the company's carried over its three-tier approach with this next wave of models, as follows:
- M3: Eight main processing (CPU) cores (four performance and four efficiency) and 10 graphics (GPU) cores
- M3 Pro: Starting at 12 main processing cores (six performance and six efficiency) and 18 graphics cores
- M3 Max: Starting at 16 main processing cores (12 performance and four efficiency) and 40 graphics cores, and now supports up to 128GB of unified memory
2. 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro
Apple's MacBook Pro line is more convoluted than it seems, with Touch Bar and no-Touch Bar models still being sold. The new M3 upgrades may streamline things going into 2024.
With the ever-dwindling inventory of the M2-powered 14- and 16-inch MacBook Pros on Apple's storefront, we found out during the "Scary Fast" event that the two larger laptop models are getting fresher M3, M3 Pro, and M3 Max chips. Apple says the M3 Max models, for example, are two times faster than the M2 Max models that were released back in January.
The new MacBook Pros can also be configured with up to 128GB of unified memory, which is ideal for "extreme users" who rely on multiple plugins and services when photo and video editing, developing, and more.
Also: M3 MacBook Pro with top-of-the-line specs? You'll be surprised at how far it is under $10,000
What hasn't changed is the form factors of the new MacBook Pros, with Liquid Retina XDR displays that get plenty bright (up to 1,600 nits) and all the ports for professional users. Only this time, there's a new Space Black finish that gives off dark hues similar to the iPhone 15 Pro, and, more importantly, a meaningful improvement to the performance and battery life (up to 22 hours) thanks to the new M3 chipsets.
The 14- and 16-inch MacBook Pros are available for preorder right now, starting at $1,599 and $2,499, respectively, with the M3 and M3 Pro models seeing earlier ship times (as soon as next week), and the M3 Max models being slated for late November.
3. iMac with M3
It's hard to believe that the oh-so-colorful 24-inch iMac is more than 900 days old, and I blame its timeless design and reliable M1 chipset for that. During Apple's "Scary Fast" event, the company's all-in-one computer for the mainstream saw a much-needed revamp -- mostly internal, of course, with the new base-level M3 chip taking the M1's place.
Also: Best Mac models this year, and which one you should buy
Apple says the M3 chip allows the new 24-inch iMac to perform at twice the speeds of its M1 predecessor, and the difference is larger compared to Intel-based models. Otherwise, the design of the new iMac is about the same as the last, with a 1080p FaceTime camera, a six-speaker sound system, a 4.5K retina display that ramps up to 500 nits of brightness, and Apple's Neural Engine and Media Engine for creative workflows.
The 24-inch iMac is now available for preorder starting at $1,299 and will begin shipping next week.
What products didn't get announced
1. 13-inch macbook pro.
There were murmurs that the M3-fication of MacBook Pros would include Apple's lost but not forgotten 13-inch model, but that turned out to be more of a trick than a treat.
It's not unreasonable to assume that it may be the end of the line for Apple's final MacBook with a Touch Bar, as its most recent refresh happened nearly a year and a half ago when the company simply swapped out its M1 chip for an M2. The design of the 13-inch MacBook Pro remains inferior to even the MacBook Air, which fields a notched design and a keyboard that's less prone to defects.
If there was any time for the company to further the gap between its old laptops and the new, Apple's "Scary Fast" event just made the most sense.
2. Magic Keyboard and Mouse with USB-C
With the iPhone being the last major product to transition over from Lightning to USB-C, the stars had aligned for Apple to standardize its most popular Mac accessories during its "Scary Fast" event, but that never came to fruition. Not yet, at least.

With the new 24-inch iMac, Apple will continue to bundle Lightning-equipped Magic Keyboard and Mouse peripherals, giving some users reasons to retain their cables.

Get ready to buy some new cables. Apple is about to announce the iPhone 15 and, with it, a change from Lightning to USB-C. It’s one of the biggest changes to the iPhone in years — and one that’s likely to infuriate as many people in need of new cables as it does excite those who are happy to consolidate around just one.
Alongside the iPhone 15 and 15 Pro, Apple is also expected to introduce new Apple Watches. The Apple Watch Series 9 and Apple Watch Ultra 2 are expected to be modest updates focused on internal improvements. We’re also expecting a new line of accessories using a more sustainable material and possibly some other gear — like an updated AirPods Pro case — that shifts over to USB-C as well.
The event starts at 1PM ET / 10AM PT, and you’ll be able to follow along with the latest here. We’ve got an embed of Apple’s YouTube stream, and our own team is on the ground reporting live with photos and videos. Here's everything Apple announced today
From CNN Business' Clare Duffy
Apple sped through a range of new product announcements during its hour-long event Tuesday. Here's everything it unveiled:
- Apple TV+ will now air two exclusive Friday night baseball games each week.
- Just in time for St. Patrick's Day... Apple is adding two new shades of green to its iPhone 13 lineup.
- Apple unveiled a new iPhone SE with 5G, making it the company's first budget smartphone with access to the faster network. It will, however, be slightly more expensive than the previous model.
- Apple introduced its most powerful in-house chip yet, the M1 Ultra .
- The M1 Ultra (and its little brother, the M1 Max) will be used in Apple's new, more powerful desktop computer, the Mac Studio and Studio Display .
- Apple announced an updated iPad Air , featuring the M1 chip and 5G connectivity.
One thing Apple executives didn't mention during the event: Russia's war in Ukraine. Apple last week suspended all product sales in Russia amid the conflict.
Apple introduces the Mac Studio and Studio Display
Apple unveiled a new desktop computer that will use its M1 Max and M1 Ultra, the Mac Studio and Studio Display .
Thanks to Apple's in-house chips, the Mac Studio has a strikingly small form factor — just 7.7 inches by 3.7 inches. It will also be quieter, faster and more energy efficient than other high-end Macs. The Mac Studio with the M1 Ultra is expected to be 90% faster than the company's powerful 16-core Mac Pro. The Mac Studio with M1 Max will have up to 64 GB of unified memory, and, with the M1 Ultra, it will have up to 128 GB of memory.
The Mac Studio comes with four thunderbolt ports, two USB-A ports, ethernet and HDMI ports and a pro audio jack on the back. The front of the device will feature an SD card reader and either USB-C or thunderbolt ports on the front, depending on the model.
The Studio Display comes with a 27-inch screen and a 5K retina display. It also boasts a 12 megapixel camera that supports Apple's Center Stage feature for improved video calls, as well as spatial audio capabilities.
The Mac Studio with M1 Max will start at $1,999; with M1 Ultra, the device will start at $3,999. The Mac Studio Display will start at $1,599. All can be pre-ordered today, and will be available March 18.
Apple makes no mention of Russian invasion of Ukraine
From CNN Business' Catherine Thorbecke
For nearly an hour on Tuesday, Apple executives ticked off a long list of product updates, but they never acknowledged the difficult backdrop for the event: the war in Ukraine.
Russia's invasion of Ukraine has put public pressure on the tech sector and business community in general to take action. Apple's decision to proceed with its event amid the conflict also received some pushback on social media.
CEO Tim Cook has been known to reference major news during Apple events, but he stayed silent on the conflict Tuesday. As one tech journalist from the Wall Street Journal pointed out on Twitter, however, Cook appeared to be wearing a blue shirt with a yellow Apple Watch band -- the colors of Ukraine's national flag.
Last week, Apple said it was taking some steps in response to the Russian invasion of Ukraine -- such as suspending sales in Russia and barring state-run RT News and Sputnik News from being downloaded on its App Store outside of Russia. Ukrainian officials, however, have urged Cook and Apple to do more.
Apple unveils new ‘supercharged’ iPad Air
Apple CEO Tim Cook unveiled the “new, even more amazing, iPad Air” at Tuesday’s event. The upgraded device features Apple’s M1 chip, the same in-house processor used in the iPad Pro. The new iPad also features 5G capabilities and a revamped front-facing camera.
The new iPad Air is available for pre-order starting Friday and will be available in stores on March 18. The price starts at $599.
Apple is adding to its lineup of in-house chips
Apple's in-house, M1 chips have improved the speed and performance of its devices. Now, the company is adding a new chip to the lineup.
It already has the M1, M1 Pro and M1 Max — the new chip will be named M1 Ultra .
The M1 Ultra will make some Mac desktops faster, more powerful and more power efficient. The new chip has 114 million transistors (seven times more than the M1), 128 GB of unified memory for big workloads, and is nearly eight times faster than the M1.
New iPhone SE is Apple's first budget 5G smartphone
By CNN Business' Samantha Murphy Kelly
Apple unveiled the third iteration of its iPhone SE, with a powerful A15 processor, a new camera system, 5G connectivity and better battery life.
While the device promises all the bells and whistles that come with the SE model, the bump up to 5G comes with a price change. The device will cost $429 — $30 more than the previous model.
Along with 5G accessibility, Apple’s A15 processor is a big addition. It's the same chip found in its higher-end iPhone 13 models. The overall design, however, remains the same, including the home button with Touch ID.
The company also showed off several graphics comparing the 4.7-inch SE to the iPhone 8 model, likely in a bid to get people who haven’t upgraded in awhile to do so.
Colors include midnight (black), starlight (white) and red. Pre-orders start today and the device starts shipping on March 18.
Apple doubles down on the color green for iPhones
From CNN Business' Samantha Murphy Kelly
Just in time for spring, Apple is adding two new shades of green to its iPhone 13 lineup.
The iPhone 13 will now be available in a bold new green and the iPhone 13 Pro will come in an alpine green. The devices start shipping on March 18.
Last year, the company unveiled a new purple iPhone color at its spring event.
Coming soon to Apple TV+: Friday night baseball
CEO Tim Cook kicked off Apple's first event of the year by announcing that Friday night baseball will be coming to Apple TV+.
Each Friday, two Major League Baseball games will be streamed exclusively on Apple TV+, Cook said.
Cook also previewed some new content coming to Apple TV+ and reviewed some of its existing popular content, including the film Coda, which has been nominated for the Oscar in Best Picture and Best Supporting Actor.
A budget 5G iPhone may be the highlight of today's Apple event
The focus of Apple's event today will be on performance. That likely means faster chips, more devices with 5G connectivity and more powerful cameras.
Apple's rumored 5G iPhone SE is the most-anticipated device expected at today's event.
What to expect : The updated SE is expected to have an A15 Bionic chip, a camera that shoots 4K video, and will drop the classic notch usually found at the top. But the real headline grabber will be 5G.
Who's it for? Although the SE line launched in 2017 -- and was updated in 2020 -- the third iteration could be the ultimate draw for customers by giving them access to faster 5G wireless networks at a more affordable price point ($399). It will also likely appeal to first-time buyers, as well as those looking to switch from Android and people who prefer smaller screens.
A new iPad : The iPad Air is also said to be getting a refresh. The rumor mill is pointing to the same A15 processor as the new iPhone SE as well as 5G connectivity and a new front-facing camera.

Watch Today’s Apple Event Right Here
Your spring calendar is probably looking pretty crowded already. Your vaccine appointments are coming up, the family is planning a visit, and maybe somewhere in there you'll be going on an actual in-person date—your first in quite a while. (Lucky you.)
Make room on that bursting agenda to pencil in one more event, because Apple is holding a media presentation today, April 20. The event will be livestreamed, and you can watch at home as the company shows off some new, elegantly chamfered hardware.
It's always difficult to speculate what a company as secretive as Apple could be planning as these events approach, but we can set some reasonable expectations about what we'll see at today's event based on some leaked information and some investigative reporting at other outlets. Most signs point to new iPads —specifically, new iPad Pro models and a refresh of the recently resuscitated iPad Mini. According to Bloomberg , the larger of the new iPad Pros will have a brighter, more technically advanced display, and both Pro models will have faster chips and a Thunderbolt port for attaching a wider array of accessories. Other reports indicate that we might see a new Apple Pencil on Tuesday, as well as the arrival of AirTags, the small location-reporting widgets that work with Apple's Find My app.
We're fairly certain we won't see a new iPhone, new AirPods, or any previews of macOS or iOS. The iPhone hardware is traditionally released in the fall, and the software walk-throughs are the highlight of Apple's Worldwide Developer Conference, which is already scheduled for June .
Apple's presentation will start at 1 pm Eastern, 10 am Pacific, on Tuesday, April 20 . You can stream it in the player at the top of this page. You can also view the stream on Apple’s website , in the Apple TV app, or on the company’s YouTube channel .
That Apple TV option is new as of last year—now that Apple has its own streaming service, it also has a dedicated video app on mobile devices, Apple TV boxes, Roku boxes, and in some smart TVs. You can open that app and find the option to stream Tuesday's event whether or not you subscribe to the monthly Apple TV+ streaming service.
We'd recommend launching the stream on your television using either your YouTube app or the Apple TV app. The company's slickly produced showcases feature lots of high-impact visuals that look good in the larger format. Besides, if you watch it on your television, that frees up your laptop for tweeting snarkily into the Apple enthusiast twitterverse.
Expect Apple's presentation to last around 60 minutes. Once the event ends, come back to WIRED for coverage that rounds up the announcements and highlights the industry trends that Apple is both responding to and advancing with its latest hardware.

Apple uses a unique method to stream and present immersive video
A fisheye lens on an iPhone
Headsets providing VR and AR experiences often offer immersive video to users as well. This can take the form of Spatial Video, providing a 3D effect, but also 360-degree video that favors surrounding the viewer with content.
Apple has also released immersive video clips , namely 180-degree 3D video at high resolutions, though it is relatively slow to grow its content library at present.
To produce those videos, cameras with fisheye lenses are often used to produce an extremely wide angle shot, with multiple videos combined to make a single video.
The Apple Vision Pro does, naturally, have the capability to view fisheye content. However, while it is used to stream Apple TV+ videos, the format is largely undocumented and is unused by third parties.
In research by Mike Swanson published on Sunday, Apple's immersive video projection for users takes a different approach from more conventional fisheye formatting.
Differing distortions
Translating an image from a 2D video into a hemispherical or spherical projection map that's viewable from the user at the center isn't easy, but it is something that has practically been solved thanks to distortion.
A typical 180-degree out-of-camera fisheye shot that encompasses everything within the frame will appear as a circle, with black sections in the corners and edges of the circle referencing areas with no visual data available.
By segmenting the video up in a specific way, it can be stretched to fit a 180-degree field of view of the user, both horizontally and vertically within a virtual sphere. This is the simplest way of accomplishing a projection, but it isn't data-efficient due to the corner sections being part of the encoded video, but not actually being used in the final image.
An alternative that eliminates the black sections exists, in the form of an 180-degree equirectangular projection. Created via editing, it warps the image to fill the entire rectangular frame.
When distorted for viewing, this means more pixels are used for the edges of the projection map, meaning more detail for users to actually see.
To create stereoscopic video for each, or a 360-degree video, each 180-degree field of view is often squished into half the available space, allowing both sides to be included within the same frame.
For this scenario, which makes it harder to preserve details in each 180-degree view, warping out the image to the corners to eliminate wasted pixels makes sense.
Reality distortion effects
Swanson had trouble initially determining what Apple changed in its fisheye projection treatment, but did pull up some details about what was performed from monitoring the network traffic of his Apple Vision Pro.
From monitoring alone, he discovered streams were approximatly 50Mbps, encoded in HDR10, at a resolution of 4,320 by 4,320 per eye, at 90fps. However, since immersive videos were DRM-protected, Swanson couldn't view the raw fisheye frames without breaking it.
He was then alerted to the Apple TV+ intro clip of the logo using the same fisheye encoding, but without DRM. This allowed further analysis of Apple's fisheye format.
For a start, rather than using a single video frame to handle two eyes or front and back 180-degree projections, Apple instead encodes stereo video using MV-HEVC. In effect, each 180-degree projection is stored in a separate video layer within the video file.
More unusually, Apple encodes its fisheye content at a 45-degree rotation. The base of the "sphere" is located at the bottom left corner of the frame, with the top point at the opposite corner.
Swanson says this change makes sense, with one good reason being that the diagonal is the longest dimension of the frame and therefore can store more horizontal post-rotation pixels than an unrotated version.
To viewers, the advantage is that the horizon line will have the most pixels available. Since this is where most people will be looking while watching a video, preserving detail in this section is crucial to the viewing experience.
The areas with the fewest pixels to work with in a projection shifts from the middle of the top, bottom, and sides of a normal fisheye to the "corner" sections, which are feasibly less viewed.
Still some mysteries
Despite the additional information, Swanson hasn't cracked Apple's entire process, with some elements still eluding him.
One of these centers around a technique called Radial Stretching, where each degree of an image is stretched to the edge of a square frame, maximizing the usage of the entire frame for the image.
While Swanson has gotten close when processing a raw Apple fisheye frame, it's "not 100% correct." It is proposed that there are some additional logic elements at play along the diagonals to reduce the amount of radial stretching and distortion required, with Swanson's best guess being the use of simple beveled corners.
It's also offered that Apple could potentially be encoding to a specific geometry to add unnecessary complexity, making it harder for others to use the same format.
Swanson is still left with questions about why Apple uses this type of projection format. While Apple may find there are more benefits to doing so, they are still a mystery.
Encoding video for the Apple Vision Pro is just one of the challenges filmmakers face. In March, Canon executives explained that none of its cameras are capable of producing video at the resolution and refresh rate the headset requires.
If Apple is going to expand on how it treats video in the format, it may do so during WWDC 2024 in June .

Apple announces special event for may 7: ‘let loose’.
Apple has announced a special event for May 7, teasing “Let Loose.” The event will be online and take place at 7 a.m. PT/10 a.m. ET. It’s expected to focus on new iPad hardware and accessories, with a new iPad Pro, iPad Air, Apple Pencil, and Magic Keyboard all rumored.
Apple Event confirmed for May 7
The Apple event on May 7 appears like it will be completely virtual, similar to the “Scary fast” event that was held in October. All the invites from Apple indicate that people will be able to watch online, and no one has received an invitation to an in-person event.
When you refresh the Apple.com homepage, you get a different version of the invite artwork each time:
The main artwork for the “Let Loose” invite is a clear indication that a new Apple Pencil is on the way, showing an Apple Pencil drawing a colorful Apple logo. According to a few different rumors, the new Apple Pencil could feature Find My integration, as well as magnetically swappable tips that simulate different writing and drawing instruments.
9to5Mac has also found multiple pieces of evidence suggesting the new Apple Pencil will support a “Squeeze” gesture of some sort.
Meanwhile, we’re also expecting a new iPad Pro lineup, where both the 11-inch and 12.9-inch models will switch to OLED displays. The new iPad Pro designs will also be significantly thinner than their predecessors.
The iPad Air lineup will expand to include a new 12.9-inch form factor for the first time, joining the existing 10.9-inch size. The 12.9-inch model will also use a mini-LED display, according to a surprising last minute rumor twist .
Finally, Apple is also working on an updated Magic Keyboard for the new iPad Pro. The new Magic Keyboard will “make the iPad Pro look more like a laptop and include a sturdier frame with aluminum,” according to multiple reports. This will mark the first time that the Magic Keyboard has been updated since its introduction in 2020.

Apple sinks to 3rd place in China as iPhone sales slide
- Apple's China headache is getting worse.
- A slide in iPhone sales has left Apple in third place in China, per Counterpoint Research estimates.
- It's the iPhone's worst performance in China since 2020 amid rising competition from local rivals.
Apple's struggles in China just keep getting worse.
It's sunk from first to third place in the Chinese smartphone market after iPhone sales tumbled 19% in the first three months of the year, according to estimates from Counterpoint Research .
The sales slump marks the iPhone's worst performance in China since 2020 and underlines increasingly tough competition from local rivals.
Chinese-based rivals Vivo and Honor outpaced Apple's sales in the first quarter of the year, per Counterpoint data. Apple finished the quarter with a 15.7% share of the market, down from 19.7% in the same period last year and barely ahead of Huawei's 15.5%, per the research outfit.
In stark contrast with Apple's slide, Huawei sales soared by almost 70% compared with the first three months of 2023.
Counterpoint research analyst Ivan Lam said in a note that Huawei's surge had directly affected iPhone sales in China. Apple had also been hit by fewer consumers replacing their smartphones, he added.

Huawei's rise has given Apple CEO Tim Cook a new headache, given he's already dealing with disappointing iPhone 15 sales and government bans in China. Cook went to China in March to visit Apple's newest store in Shanghai and attend the high-profile China Development Forum in Beijing.
Huawei recently released a new series of smartphones called the Pura 70 that has an advanced camera system similar to the trio of lenses on the iPhone Pro range .
The new phones, which start at $760, provide Huawei with a new opportunity to win over Chinese customers from Apple. Last year the company launched the Mate 60 Pro series that was aimed at iPhone 15 buyers.
Despite the stiff competition, Lam said iPhone sales could still reverse their downward slide.
"We are seeing slow but steady improvement from week to week, so momentum could be shifting," he said. "For the second quarter, the possibility of new color options combined with aggressive sales initiatives could bring the brand back into positive territory."
The 19% decline is slightly better than the 24% slide that Counterpoint had estimated for the first six weeks of the year.
The Chinese smartphone market is crucial for Apple as it's second only to the US, and is ahead of Europe.
Apple has been fighting on multiple fronts this year. In March, the European Commission fined the company about 1.8 billion euros ($1.95 billion). In the US, Apple is battling an antitrust lawsuit from the Department of Justice .
Apple did not immediately respond to a request for comment from Business Insider, made outside normal working hours.
