This means that most students with a strong academic track record will enjoy access to these advanced online history PhD programs.

What are online PhD programs in history?

In history, a PhD is considered a terminal degree. This means a PhD is the highest degree that history students can earn. Online doctoral history programs can lead to opportunities for professional historical research, consultation for government agencies, professorship in a university history department, and more.

Online PhD in history candidates are typically already working at a high level in their field. Many are already working as history teachers or applying their research skills in supporting roles.

Often, this means that students seeking their PhD degree must balance existing work and personal responsibilities with a challenging course of education. For many graduate students, the online history PhD program makes this balance possible.

About Accredited Online History PhD Programs

The best online PhD in history programs will have proper accreditation. Be sure that your are pursuing your PhD in history through a fully accredited university and program:

  • Institutional Accreditation : Accreditation is vital for online doctoral programs. It signifies that the online PhD programs offered by the online school are in compliance with the standards of a Department of Education-approved accrediting body.

A school must also be accredited in order to offer federal financial aid to its online doctorate candidates. When looking for an online doctoral program, seek out options with accreditation from a colleges and schools commission in your region. This stamp of approval is critical for ensuring the quality and credibility of your online program.

  • Programmatic Accreditation : In addition to institutional accreditation, be sure that you prioritize online doctorate degree programs with programmatic accreditation.

While there is no specifically required programmatic accreditation for the general field of historical research, those who intend to work in post-secondary educational institutions may be required to complete a doctoral program with accreditation from the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE). Make sure that you online history program offers the proper programmatic accreditation requirements for your career goals.

  • Carnegie Classification : The Carnegie Classification of Institutions of Higher Education, or as it is more commonly known, the Carnegie Classification, is a framework for categorizing all accredited, degree-granting institutions in the United States.

Originally formulated in 1970 by The Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching, and administered through the University of Indiana’s Center for Postsecondary Research since 2014, the Carnegie Classification is “the leading framework for recognizing and describing institutional diversity in U.S. higher education.”

Under this classification, top research universities for doctoral degrees and PhD candidates are identified as either R2: Doctoral Universities for “high research activity” or R1: Doctoral Universities for “very high research activity.” Look for these classifications when considering options for your online PhD programs.

Key Point: Be sure that you only consider online PhD programs with proper accreditation.

Admission Requirements

Each online doctoral in history program has its own admission requirements. However, most online doctoral programs will carry the same basic threshold for admission:

  • A completed online application
  • Official undergraduate college transcripts
  • A cumulative GPA of at least 3.0
  • GRE scores, MAT scores, or GMAT scores
  • Letters of recommendation
  • Personal interviews
  • Personal statement or writing sample
  • Plan of study

Key Point: In most cases, you will be eligible to enter your online PhD in history after earning a bachelor’s degree. However, some specialized online PhD programs may require you to have earned a master’s degree as well.

Curriculum and Courses

As with other advanced degree and graduate programs, research is the central component of your online PhD in history program. This is true for fully online doctorate degrees as well as hybrid degrees combining online education with traditional on-campus courses.

Regardless of whether you complete a traditional, hybrid or online history PhD program, the typical time to completion is five to seven years.

The typical components of your online PhD program may include:

Foundational Courses

Some foundational online doctorate courses may be focused on your specific area of study.

You may be able to choose a concentration in an area such as:

  • American history
  • World history
  • European history
  • African history
  • Latin American history
  • Political science
  • Ancient history

In addition to your core concentration courses, additional courses will focus on honing research skills and practicing experimental design. You may be able to complete many of these requirements through online classes.

Examinations for PhD Candidacy

Many online doctoral candidates are required to complete certain examinations to enter into online PhD candidacy. This will typically occur after you’ve completed one to two years of foundational courses.

Dissertation

In most cases, the central component of your online PhD program will be the completion of your dissertation. After gaining status as an online PhD in history candidate, you will typically work closely with a professorial advisor or mentor to develop an original research question.

This research question will form the basis of your dissertation—an ongoing project designed to address this research question through applied research. While you will work closely with your advisor or mentor, much of your dissertation will be rooted in independent research. This is especially true for students pursuing their PhD in history online.

Oral Defense

Upon completion of the written portion of your dissertation—which will typically present the findings from your original research project—you will be expected to defend your findings. This “oral defense” will typically be conducted by a commission of professors and experts in your field. PhD candidates in some online degree programs may be able to conduct this defense via teleconferencing.

Teaching Requirements

Some online PhD in history programs will also include a teaching component, which will require you to work as an adjunct professor or teacher’s assistant in an undergraduate or graduate school. It may be possible for students in the online doctoral degree program to also serve teaching requirements by instructing students through an online program.

Key Point: The online history PhD is a research-focused degree. Your dissertation will be a central part of your online PhD program.

What’s the difference between online doctoral programs and online PhD programs?

Technically, a PhD program is a type of doctorate degree program. This means that all online PhD candidates are doctoral students. By contrast, not all doctoral students are PhD candidates.

The primary distinction is that doctoral students are primarily focused on putting existing theories into practice. Depending on your chosen field, your online doctoral degree may require participation in an educational leadership program, engagement in clinical practice, work as a resident in a nursing program, and much more.

By contrast, online PhD students are focused on creating new knowledge in their area of study. This usually means that online PhD candidates are focused on introducing new theories, creating research projects around these theories, and presenting new findings that demonstrate a mastery of existing knowledge and the insight to introduce new ideas into the field.

Today, more working professionals than ever before are pursuing both online doctoral degrees and online PhD programs.

This article will explore some of the top online history doctorate degree programs and provide information on what sets them apart.

The future of online PhD programs in history is promising as more and more institutions continue to offer these programs. Earning your PhD in history online will give you the skills and credentials you need to take your career to the next level.

First, what is history? Many people might say that it is the study of the past. While this is true, history is so much more than that. The study of history also helps us to understand the present. It can help us to make better decisions, to understand our world and our place in it, and to learn from the mistakes of the past.

History teaches us about different cultures and how they have interacted with each other. It teaches us about the human experience and how different people have responded to different events throughout history. It can also help us to understand our own personal histories and how they have shaped who we are today.

Because history is so important, it is essential that we have historians who can research and teach us about it. That is why getting a PhD in history can be such a valuable thing. With a PhD in history, you can become a teacher or professor, or you could work for a museum or historical society. You could also work for a publishing company or for a government agency that deals with historical records. No matter what your career goals may be, a PhD in history will help you to reach them.

The history PhD programs online are designed to provide students with rich historical knowledge with practical applications to present realities. These courses include, but are not limited to, American history, European history, world history, historical methods and research, statistics, research methodology, and the history of education. In addition to these courses, students are also required to complete a dissertation in order to graduate from the program.

Students who enroll for a PhD online history program can choose to specialize in one of two areas including regional history, country histories for example American history, world history etc. Additionally, students have the option to focus their research on a specific time period or region of the world. What to Expect from Online Ph.D. History Programs

The online Ph.D. history program combines a demanding scholarly education with the freedom to follow one’s intellectual passions. Candidates will gain a firm foundation in historical theory, research techniques, and methodology through their coursework. They will create a study plan with the help of their academic advisor that will align with their academic objectives. Students will learn and be able to use research tools, including oral history, quantitative research approaches, new media, and other methodologies.

An online Ph.D. history program usually takes about five years of full-time study. However, many students can finish it sooner. The program’s framework and curriculum are based on concentrations of study, such as American history, European history, or military history, and may also include a thematic concentration. All candidates for the history Ph.D. will undergo examinations based on the coursework. A student is not immediately qualified for a degree upon completing a predetermined number of graduate hours. In addition, the student must complete a language requirement, perform well on written and oral exams, and complete and successfully defend a doctoral dissertation to qualify for the Ph.D. The dissertation written by a Ph.D. candidate is expected to make a noteworthy, original contribution to historical knowledge and must be completed using unique, independent research in the area of specialty. The finished dissertation will be defended during the final oral examination.

Here is a quick break-up of the online Ph.D. history program (varies by institution):

The course selection for history doctoral students is broad. In most instances, students can choose their course plans from one area of history to fit their needs and professional objectives.

In many instances, Ph.D. students must fulfill a teaching requirement. This criterion is met when the student works as a teaching assistant (TA) or instructor of record (IoR) for at least one semester.

Some schools require one year of continuous full-time study. During this time, the student is expected to make significant progress preparing for their comprehensive examinations.

Comprehensive Exam

After completing the required curriculum, students can take a comprehensive exam, usually in written form. However, in some instances, students are allowed to compose a manuscript on a topic of their choosing and defend it orally in front of a committee of departmental, school, and/or university teachers. The candidate’s specific fields of study will be considered when designing the Ph.D. exams.

Dissertation & Defense

A Ph.D. student must write and deliver to the dissertation committee a written dissertation proposal. The proposal should include the research problem, study plan, and potential influence on the field. Following the public presentation, the proposal will be presented in an open forum, and the student must successfully defend it before the dissertation committee.

Field Experience/Internship

Doctoral candidates are encouraged to do independent study research courses that combine and connect classroom theory with field activities. They can interact with historical communities by conducting studies and collecting data from diverse sources. At some colleges, this is a mandatory requirement.

How Long does it take to complete the Online Ph.D. History Program?

Some online Ph.D. history programs can be completed in as little as 4 years, while others can take as long as 8. Accreditations for Online Ph.D. History Programs

Accreditation is one of the most important factors for prospective students to consider when enrolling in an online Ph.D. history program. Accreditation necessitates an in-depth examination of a school’s academic offerings as well as student support services. Because a school’s accreditation affects both course credit transferability and a student’s eligibility for federal financial aid, prospective students should check to see if the institution offering the program has received national or regional accreditation from organizations like:

  • New England Association of Schools and Colleges ( NEASC )
  • Middle States Commission on Higher Education ( MSCHE )
  • Higher Learning Commission ( HLC )
  • Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges ( SACSCOC )
  • Northwest Commission on Colleges and Universities ( NWCCU )
  • Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC) Senior College and University Commission ( WSCUC )

Read the Guide to College Accreditation to learn more about accreditation.

The Graduate Program

Columbia has been one of the most important centers of graduate education in history since modern Ph.D. programs began in America over a century ago. Recipients of our degrees hold distinguished positions in virtually every major university in the United States, and in many abroad. Our program offers a broad education in most areas of historical scholarship and attempts to train students for a discipline and a profession in the midst of considerable change. That includes not simply assisting students in acquiring the knowledge and skills essential to becoming contributing scholars, but also helping them to become effective teachers and to exist comfortably within a demanding and complicated professional world.

The members of our faculty represent many different approaches to the study of the past, and we strive to attract students of similarly diverse interests and commitments. No one should feel that being at Columbia requires accepting any one approach to the study of history.

This part of our website is designed to provide both prospective and current students with answers to some of the many questions they may have about the department.

Admissions answers commonly-asked questions about our admissions process.

Under Ph.D. Fields you will find information about the separate fields of study available in our program and the relationship among them.

Fellowships and Financial Aid explains the various ways we provide our students with fellowships and financial aid.

Dissertations-in-Progress summarizes the course of study towards the Ph.D and highlights the work of our students.

Research awards and recent honors are showcased in Award Announcements .

The section entitled Placement sketches how we prepare our students for the academic job market and reports on how our students have done in that market in recent years.

In the Graduate Handbook , we explain our curriculum and our academic requirements and provide more detailed information about aspects of the program such as the MA, Orals, M.Phil., Dissertations, etc.

Our FAQs are useful for students seeking admission as well as for current students seeking quick information.

The Annual Newsletter keeps us informed about our students.

Alum: The reading, research paper, and exam requirements were rigorous. We were expected to read hundreds of pages each week comprising textbook and journal article material. However, I found the rest of the program requirements to be lacking. Our primary assignments, outside of reading and research, were weekly posts to the discussion boards. Most of my professors interacted with the class rarely, and they did not provide much in the way of feedback, direct instruction, or guidance. Overall, I learned a lot at Norwich, but I think that is because I was personally invested. Bottom line - online school equals a largely solo and ultimately less rewarding academic experience. ... What You Will Learn in a History PhD Program

When students enroll in a history PhD program, they will gain knowledge and skills that will be vital to their careers later on. Students will gain a deep and comprehensive understanding of historical disciplines and methods of inquiry, critical thinking skills that can be applied to a variety of historical sources and commentaries, and will learn how to conduct original research that provides a noteworthy scholarly contribution to the field overall.

Skills Needed and Expectations

Students who are seeking to complete a PhD in history will need to choose a specialty since the field of history is so broad. Some of the specializations that students can select include medieval European history, African-American history, Latin American history, womenís history, ancient Egyptian history, and many others.

Within each of these specializations, students will be expected to study, understand, and be able to speak authoritatively on various aspects of these civilizations. These aspects include the overall culture, the political philosophy, and the place of women and men in each of these societies. They will also need to be able to reflect on the artistic, literary, or other contributions that each society has produced and discuss how these contributions do or donít reflect the mores of the era they are studying.

Students in history Ph.D. programs need to be able to research and write well, since much of their coursework will require them to write well thought out papers on certain subjects related to both history in general and in their chosen specialization.

Students will also need to make connections between general and specific concepts, examine and evaluate the theories of other scholars, and form logical and coherent arguments. They will be required to demonstrate background knowledge of the discipline on their qualifying exams. The dissertation thesis will require them to write an extremely thorough and well-researched paper on a topic of their choosing, in addition to an oral defense of this paper.

What Do Online History PhD Programs Have to Offer?

There are few online history PhD programs. Those that exist tend to be multi-disciplinary in nature.

The University of Wisconsin at Milwaukee offers a doctoral program in the Social Foundations of Education, which prompts the student to explore the history and politics of education in urban areas. Students who choose the online option will pay in-state tuition. More information about the program can be found through direct contact at the [email protected] , or by going to the program website at cms.uwm.edu .

The London School of Economics and Political Science offers an online Ph.D. in international history. This is a prestigious program that requires rigorous scholarly work from its students. Students will perform research on foreign languages and will attend seminars at the Institute for Historical Research and special research seminars. In addition to extensive research training, this program will train students in foreign languages and computing. The website for the department is www2.lse.ac.uk .

What Do Offline History PhD Programs Have to Offer?

Most major universities have history departments offering bachelorís and doctoral degrees. An overview of some of the top-ranked doctoral history programs is given below.

University of Pennsylvania

The University of Pennsylvaniaís doctoral history program is a small program with an impressive reputation of excellence and in placement of students in employment after graduation. It requires students to complete sixty credits over the course of three years, divided up by twenty credits each.

Students will choose an area of concentration focusing on a geographical location and a field of specialization within that location. Students will also need to demonstrate foreign language competence and complete a dissertation, which usually concludes after two years of research and writing (following the three years of course work). To find out more, contact the program at [email protected] . The PhD program website is located here .

University of Wisconsin-Madison

The University of Wisconsin-Madison doctoral history program is a large and extensive program. Much of the research undertaken in this program is seen as experimental and interdisciplinary, using research methods from subjects such as anthropology, sociology, geography, and international relations.

Students can choose from African history, Central Asian history, comparative world history, East Asian history, European history, gender and womenís history, Latin American and Caribbean history, Middle Eastern history, South Asian history, Southeast Asian history, and United States history. To complete the degree, students must complete 48 credits, demonstrate reading knowledge in at least two foreign languages, and complete a dissertation and an oral defense.

For more information, the department contact is [email protected] . Be sure to stop by their website at history.wisc.edu .

University of Washington

The University of Washingtonís doctoral program in history requires a preliminary examination, foreign language proficiency, and a dissertation and oral defense. Students have a wide variety of fields of study from which to choose, including ancient Greece, ancient Rome, ancient Near East, Russia and Eastern Europe, pre-modern Asia, modern Asia, the Middle East, Africa, Latin America, United States, the history of science, and comparative history.

A few courses in this program, such as the History of Modern Japan and the History of the Pacific Northwest, may be taken online. The University of Washingtonís history Ph.D. program has an excellent graduate job placement record. To find out more, contact them at [email protected] . Their website can be accessed at depts.washington.edu .

Harvard University

Harvard Universityís doctoral history program provides students training in researching and writing about history. Students who complete the program often find themselves in teaching positions, or sometimes they end up working in legal or government careers. If they choose, students can study history in combination with law at Harvard Law School. Harvardís graduate student resources include fellowships, grants, lectures, and conferences.

Harvard requires a personal statement, a writing sample, and reading ability in two foreign languages. This is a competitive program to which only serious students are encouraged to apply. Students will spend the first two years on coursework and on preparation for the general examination. They will also be given instruction on teaching practices to prepare them for their careers as professors.

To contact the program, e-mail the department at [email protected] or visit Harvardís website at history.fas.harvard.edu .

Syracuse University

Syracuse Universityís history doctoral program is located in the Maxwell School, a social science institution that allows students to pursue interdisciplinary studies in order to give them a well-rounded education. Students need to submit a personal statement and demonstrate competence in two languages beyond English. Students can take courses in American history, European history, the history of India, and womenís history.

Prospective students should e-mail the school about the program at [email protected] . The website is www.maxwell.syr.edu .

Northwestern University

Northwestern University has a renowned doctoral history program which has garnered it numerous research fellowships and book awards. Many members of the faculty have also won teaching awards. It is a small program, only admitting (at most) 20 students per year. Most students choose to focus on American, European, or African history, though Latin American and Asian history do exist as options.

Because of the small size of the program, students benefit from close interaction with the faculty members and can receive more personal attention. Students will be taught profound understanding of the field and historical criticism and analysis in preparation for conducting their own research for their dissertations. E-mail [email protected] for additional information, or see the website: www.history.northwestern.edu .

Stanford University

Stanford Universityís doctoral history program offers students 14 fields of study from which to choose, including African history, ancient history, British history, early modern European history, East Asian history, Eastern European/Russian history, Jewish history, Latin American history, medieval European history, Middle Eastern history, modern European history, scientific history, transnational, international and global history, and the history of the United States.

Admission to the program is very competitive. For more information, contact the Graduate Program Administrator at [email protected] . See Stanfordís history graduate program website www.stanford.edu .

University of Miami

The University of Miami requires a comprehensive examination, passing of written and oral exams, and a dissertation. The number of credits required to complete the coursework depends on the students prior education levels, ranging from 45 credits if the student has a B.A. to 27 credits if the student has an M.A. Students must also demonstrate their ability to read in at least one foreign language.

Some of the fields that students can specialize in include medieval Europe, modern Europe, early American and modern American history, colonial and modern Latin America, East Asia, Russia, Russia, Africa, the Caribbean, the African diaspora, the history of religion, science, crime, law, labor, and military history, among others.

Interested students should contact the Director of Graduate Studies at [email protected] . Their website can be found at www.as.miami.edu .

Georgetown University

Georgetown Universityís history PhD program offers a variety of fields of study to its students, including the history of early modern and late medieval Europe, Asia, Latin America, the Middle East and North Africa, modern Europe, Russia and Eastern Europe, the United States, and transregional history. However, the department also allows students to inquire about other fields in accordance with the expertise of the faculty, including the history of science, African history, and environmental history.

This program requires students to complete the core curriculum, part of the 36 hours of required graduate coursework. Students must take comprehensive examinations to prove their knowledge of the field, and must also pass a language proficiency test in which they demonstrate their capability in reading in a relevant language other than English.

Students wanting to learn more should contact the Director of Graduate Studies at [email protected] . Visit the website at history.georgetown.edu .

Jobs and Employment Opportunities

A career as a historian or a college history professor is the most likely career choice for people with doctorate degrees in history. This profession requires teaching courses to undergraduates and graduates at the university level and will also involve performing research and publishing papers in oneís area of expertise. It may also involve mentoring history students as an academic advisor. A small number of doctorates in history may be able to secure positions with government agencies and think-tanks.

The job market of this discipline is contracting, and has continued to do so as the economy has worsened. The number of Ph.D.s awarded to history students has increased, while the jobs for people with this specific degree are decreasing. There also have not been any drops in the number of students enrolling in doctoral history programs, which means there will likely be too many candidates for too few jobs in the years to come, even as doctoral history students diversify their educations.

Salary Information

The median average salary of history professors according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics is about $60,000 a year. PhD Program

Interim Director of Doctoral Studies (Spring 2024) : Professor Alison Games Graduate Programs Manager : Carolina Madinaveitia Student Assistant to the Director of Doctoral Studies : Ashley Mayor

Welcome to Georgetown’s Ph.D. program in History! We are a top-notch program with strengths in multiple fields, including the United States, Early Modern and Modern Europe, Latin America, the Middle East, Russia and the Soviet Union, and East Asia. We encourage students with interests that span geographical regions, such as Environmental, Atlantic, and Diplomatic History. Our doctoral student community numbers roughly 100, with new cohorts of 10-12 fully-funded students each year. Our alumni have gone on to distinguished careers as historians in and out of the academy.

Our Ph.D. program has much to offer. In addition to the attention of a distinguished and award-winning History faculty, our students benefit from Georgetown’s many regional studies programs and intellectual centers, where interdisciplinary activity is prized. Opportunities for language training abound. No city has greater resources for historians than Washington, D.C.: the Library of Congress, the National Archives, the National Library of Medicine, the Folger Shakespeare Library, and many other institutions hold an unparalleled wealth of research material.

Our doctoral program is collegial and collaborative, with a vibrant intellectual life. Outside of class, students participate in seminars and conferences along with faculty, share in the activities of our Institute for Global History, grow through professional development workshops, and socialize with each other when the academic day is over. It’s a fun place to be a serious historian.

Are Online Ph.D. Programs Worth It?

An online Ph.D. program is an ideal choice if you want to balance your career and family responsibilities along with your education.

While there are some preconceived notions that online programs aren't legitimate, as long as the program you choose is accredited, the degree is the same as one earned in person.

  • According to the BLS , workers with a doctoral degree earned a median of $651 more per week than workers with a bachelor's degree in 2022.
  • Doctorate-holders boast some of the lowest unemployment rates at 1%.
  • In 2019, research found that 39.8% of graduate students were enrolled in online learning.
  • The number of doctorates awarded between 2020 and 2021 dropped by 5.4%.

How We Rank Schools

Accredited Schools Online uses a custom ranking system to evaluate schools on their quality, affordability, and reputation.

We rank schools using factors like graduation rate, admission rate, tuition costs, financial aid, and program offerings. All our ranked schools hold institutional accreditation .

For this page, we created a directory of online accredited Ph.D. programs that meet our criteria. The list is organized alphabetically rather than ranked.

Learn more about how we create school rankings on our methodology page .

Does Accreditation Matter for Online Ph.D. Programs?

A college is accredited after being recognized by an independent institution that verifies the school's courses and programs meet set quality standards.

The school you choose must be accredited in order for your Ph.D. to be recognized by employers , earn professional licensures, and qualify you for federal financial aid.

Legitimate accreditors are recognized by the U.S. Department of Education and/or the Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA).

How Much Does an Online Ph.D. Cost?

In general, you can expect to pay around $13,000-$30,000 per year in tuition and fees for your online Ph.D.

Several factors affect how much your Ph.D. program will cost, including:

  • Whether the program is fully funded
  • Whether your school is public or private
  • Whether you're an in-state or out-of-state student
  • How long your program lasts (most Ph.D. programs take 5-7 years to complete)
  • How much financial aid you get

While many in-person and online doctoral programs in the U.S. are fully funded, these tend to be highly competitive.

One way to save money on your online Ph.D. is to attend a program that offers in-state tuition to residents. Make sure you submit the FAFSA each year so you can secure federal financial aid .

You may also need to budget for occasional travel to and from campus and research sites, especially as you work on your dissertation.

What's the Difference Between a Ph.D. and a Doctorate?

While a Ph.D. and a doctoral degree, or doctorate, both signify the same level of education completed, their uses are different.

Doctorate is the broader term — a Ph.D. is a type of doctorate. Specifically, a Ph.D. is an academic degree that prepares you for a career in research or teaching in your field of study (such as science, English, or economics).

Besides a Ph.D., other types of doctorates include a doctor of medicine (MD), a doctor of education (Ed.D.), and a doctor of psychology (Psy.D.). These degrees are typically used in either an academic or professional setting.

Online Ph.D. Programs That Don't Require a Dissertation

A dissertation is a final written project culminating in a student's original research at the end of their Ph.D. program. A dissertation is typically presented and defended by its author. It's typically required for degrees with an academic or research focus.

Not all Ph.D. programs require a dissertation. For example, some Ph.D. programs in humanities, education, business administration, and criminal justice require simple or no dissertations for a quicker completion time .

What Jobs Can You Get After Earning an Online Ph.D.?

Once you finish your online doctoral program, you can explore a variety of career paths both within and outside academia.

Many Ph.D. graduates, especially those who studied the humanities, go on to become professors. Other popular roles include administrator, scientist, and psychologist.

Graduates of online Ph.D. programs earn a relatively high average base salary of $105,000 a year, according to Payscale .

Frequently Asked Questions About Online Ph.D. Programs

  • Collapse All

What is the quickest Ph.D. to get?

The quickest Ph.D. to earn are those that award professional degrees and don't require extensive research projects or dissertations at completion. These Ph.D. programs can include accounting, business, education, and media.

To finish your degree faster, you can also look for accelerated programs that quicken the pace of a program and shorten the time it takes to complete.

Are online doctoral programs legit?

If the online doctoral program is accredited, it is legitimate. Accreditation ensures that the program meets the rigorous educational standards of other comparative doctoral programs.

With accreditation, employers and other institutions of higher learning will recognize your degree. As more universities turn toward online programs to serve a more diverse student population, there are a growing number of legitimate, accredited online Ph.D. programs.

How long are online Ph.D. programs?

Online Ph.D. programs, like any other doctoral program, can vary in length but typically take 5-7 years to complete. A doctoral degree balances coursework with research. Usually, students must meet a certain number of course requirements before they can start original research.

While coursework may take only a year or two, writing a dissertation that meets the program requirements varies from candidate to candidate.

Can I earn my Ph.D. entirely online?

Yes, many accredited colleges and universities offer 100% online Ph.D. programs. That said, some programs may require on-campus experiences, such as library research and a dissertation defense.

What do employers think of online doctoral programs?

It takes a high level of discipline and persistence to obtain a graduate degree, no matter the context. Most employers will recognize and value the hard work it takes to get a Ph.D., whether you completed your doctorate online or in person.

Make sure you research potential programs. If you're attending an accredited, well-regarded school, employers will value your online Ph.D. just as much as a traditional one.

Pros and Cons of Getting a Doctorate Online

A business professional working on their online doctorate degree during their lunch break

From heightened career advancement opportunities to increased salary potential, there are many reasons why people are choosing to earn doctorate degrees in 2024. Thanks to the proliferation of online doctorate programs, working professionals no longer have to press pause on their jobs to attend classes or complete coursework. Instead, tens of thousands of American professionals each year are rising to meet the growth in doctoral and professional-level occupations. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), such occupations are projected to grow by 13 percent between 2016 and 2026, which is faster than the 7-percent average projection for all occupations.

If you are interested in earning a doctoral degree, you may have questions such as “Are online doctoral degrees respected?” or “Do I need to earn my degree from an accredited institution?” Discovering the answers to those questions can help you determine whether an online doctorate is a good fit for helping them achieve their professional and personal goals.

Pros of Online Doctorate Programs

Online doctoral programs provide students with a long list of benefits. While some may come to mind immediately — the ability to complete coursework from your home office or a breakroom at work, for example — others are less obvious but equally meaningful. Consider several positive elements of both the experience and impact of earning an online doctoral degree.

Flexibility

For the average working professional, spare time is a precious commodity. Between personal and professional obligations, an in-personal doctoral program with a rigid class schedule is often a non-starter. The university administrators designing the best online doctoral degree programs understand the time constraints for aspiring students and intentionally offer creative solutions that enhance the lives of professionals rather than burden them.

The flexibility of an online doctoral program empowers professionals to continue building their careers as they earn their degrees. This flexibility helps the calendar stay manageable and allows students to integrate what they are learning into their jobs in real time.

Saving Time

Gone are the days when pursuing a doctorate necessarily meant relocation, residency, or refraining from full-time work. While some individuals will find that a cross-country move for in-person coursework or an all-in approach to academic life best fits their doctoral pursuit, most working professionals are looking for a different path. An online doctoral program offers such individuals a time-savvy approach to further education. There’s no time spent commuting, walking to class, or learning the nuances of a new city and campus. Instead, the online delivery model brings education into the professional’s existing home, workplace and routine.

Instead of a rush hour drive from the office to an evening lecture, the out-of-class time commitment is simply the opening of a laptop. Frantically looking for parking to make it to a professor’s office hours on time is replaced with a virtual meeting link. Through an online program, students are empowered to make the most of their hours and can devote time and energy to their work, personal life and school.

There are long-term time savings for online doctoral degree earners as well. Students enrolled in online programs often earn their degrees more quickly than their peers enrolled in in-person programs. The efficient approach to time in online doctoral programs not only allows students to leverage their schedules during the program but after as well, as they graduate ready to make the most of their time in the workplace.

Personalized Learning

One of the most beloved features of online doctoral programs is the personalized learning approach. Through both live and asynchronous instruction, students have access to multiple educational modes. Individuals who learn best through reading, for example, can access transcripts for online courses, while those who benefit from writing out their thoughts may find discussion forums especially useful.

Additionally, the best online doctorate degree programs pair students with faculty mentors — who, because of the virtual nature of the program, can live anywhere in the country — who work and research in fields specific to the student’s interests.

Maximized Networking

Online doctorate programs empower working professionals to expand their networks significantly. By connecting with fellow students throughout the country, students enrolled in online doctorates have the opportunity to cultivate a more diverse community of like-minded professionals who are collectively working toward the greater good. The insight, perspective and experiences of individuals from various backgrounds can help students develop a national, and even global, lens for viewing their work, relationships and impact.

While an in-person educational experience can facilitate good conversation, an online platform creates a greater opportunity for diversified discussion. A principal working in education in a rural area, for example, may be enrolled in an online doctorate of education course with a superintendent in a major city. A business consultant who serves an aging client base may form a connection with an analyst focused on young professionals. Relationships like these can be mutually enriching, expanding perspectives and providing ample opportunity for collaboration, sharing advice and encouraging lifelong learning.

Cons of Online Doctoral Programs

While the online doctoral experience is overwhelmingly positive, there are a few factors for aspiring students to bear in mind. By asking the right questions about themselves and the programs they are considering, doctoral hopefuls can find the best fit for their educational futures.

Net-Based Networking

While virtual networking has tremendous potential for cultivating an expansive, diverse community, some prefer in-person interaction. For working professionals who find digital communication or relationship-building difficult or uncomfortable, the networking element of online doctoral programs may be challenging.

Credibility Concerns

Whether or not online degree programs are respected is an important issue for individuals considering a doctorate. The most critical question is whether or not an accredited institution issues a degree. Students who earn degrees — whether online or in-person — from accredited institutions can feel at ease about the credibility of their program. When a trusted accrediting body gives a program its stamp of approval, that means it meets high educational standards.

There are several accrediting bodies in the United States, many of which focus on certain types of degree programs or regions of the country. AACSB, for example, accredits business schools. The scope of accreditation for the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC) includes distance and correspondence education for eleven states and Latin America.

Time Management

Personalized learning, asynchronous instruction and virtual coursework mean that online doctoral students must create schedules and establish the structure for working toward their degrees. Individuals who struggle with time management or self-discipline may find that an in-person educational experience provides them with the rigor and boundaries they need to succeed academically.

Online program empowers students to align passion with education

Juggling full-time work and family, online student finds success in master's program.

Jecobi Swafford graduated with a Masters in Educational Psychology while working and raising a family.

”Do what you love, and you’ll never work a day in your life.” For many people, that is a challenging goal to achieve. However, thanks to the University of Tennessee, Knoxville online program, one student’s dream of aligning her passion with her educational goals has become a reality.

As someone specializing in human connections, Jecobi Swafford found choosing a degree path easy. Educational Psychology with a concentration in Adult Education was a program she knew would involve interacting with and teaching adults. It would also benefit her full-time career as a human resource professional.

“I am constantly in contact with employees at various stages of their careers and life. I had a deep desire to take my expertise and enhance the learning experience for adults in the workplace,” said Swafford.

With a full-time job and an active family, Swafford found that online learning was the perfect way to pursue her goal while allowing her to effectively balance work, family and studying. It offered her convenience, flexibility, and an opportunity to focus and develop self-discipline. The absence of a daily commute was a big plus, giving her more time to manage responsibilities, including self-care, which she believes is essential to success.

Swafford also found that being an online learner at UT didn’t mean missing the support students find in an in-person classroom. Today, Swafford uses her knowledge from the master’s program as a human resource professional in the solar and construction industry. Yet, her journey isn't just about work; it's about personal growth too. She emphasizes the importance of believing in oneself, hard work and dedication.

Earning a master's degree has enhanced Swafford's professional credibility and solidified her expertise in human resources. It sharpened her research, problem-solving, and writing skills, making her a more competent and confident professional.

“The master’s degree has equipped me with the tools to more clearly understand the unique and diverse perspectives of adult learners,” she said. “I want to be part of a team, ensure we meet employees where they are, and support them with the tools they need to be successful.”
