PhD (Doctor of Philosophy) is the most sought-after academic qualification in India for students who have completed their master's courses like M.Sc., M.Tech, MBA, MCA, MPhil, M.A., M.Com, and others. The higher education system of India has expanded quite a lot in the past few years. With more and more students willing to study higher academic courses, the number of PhD candidates has also increased. It is estimated that after ten years, about 35% of all master's students in India will pursue a PhD. Candidates can obtain a PhD in their desired field if their area of research is relevant to their master's degree.

How to pursue Distance PhD in India?

As the name suggests, PhD is a doctoral academic course that offers students higher studies after they have completed their postgraduate course. The duration of this academic course is 3 years to 5 years. A PhD's final duration usually depends on the student's academic rigor and the university's decision. As it's a doctoral course, candidates have to perform academic research in their field of study. Academic research is the soul of a student's PhD course, and he/ she has to furnish a research thesis based on his/ her scholarly research. After submitting and defending the research thesis in front of an academic panel, the student is granted a PhD by the university/ college.

Research students can perform research in various areas depending on their interest ranging from ancient core subjects to cutting-edge modern technology, Many students feel that a PhD is challenging and one has to clear several exams to obtain a seat at any university/ college, but this is not true. Students can easily pursue a distance PhD in India and get a valid degree after completing their studies. Nowadays, it is not just the government universities/ colleges that grant PhDs.

A lot of private universities have also opened up that are pretty good for pursuing a PhD. Students who don't wish to sit for highly competitive PhD entrance exams for admission to government universities/ colleges can opt to study PhD at private universities. As long as the research area is strong & relevant, the university doesn't matter.

Why should you consider obtaining PhD in India?

A few of the advantages of pursuing a PhD in India are mentioned below:

  • Availability & Diversity  – Various universities/ colleges in India grant a PhD. Along with that, there is a wide array of specializations that you can choose as your PhD subject in India. Given the sheer number of higher educational institutions in India, it is sure that you will find the subject you want to specialize in.
  • Affordability  – The tuition fee for pursuing a PhD in India is quite affordable. You won't have to pay a large sum of money to obtain a PhD in India, given that you find the right college/ university.
  • Worldwide Recognition  – Almost all the international educational associations accredit a PhD obtained from India. It is highly valued and is very reputed globally.
  • Learning  – While pursuing a PhD in India, students are exposed to various learning techniques that help them develop in-depth knowledge, skills and critical thinking abilities.
  • Research & Development  – You will get the chance to research various topics related to your field during your course. Along with that, if you want to develop new theories and techniques in the area of your specialization, you can do that while pursuing your PhD.
  • Salary  – The salary of individuals who hold a PhD is much higher than other individuals with a postgraduate degree.
  • Collaborations  – While doing your PhD, you will get the opportunity to work with or collaborate with academic experts, field experts, and experts from the industry.

Both these formats are not suited for everyone who wishes to do a PhD in India. For some people, especially working professionals, taking out time to attend classes is not possible. For them, a distance Ph.D. in India is the best option. Students don't have to participate in regular classes and lectures at the college/ university in this option. Most of the process is conducted online, and students only have to appear for semester examinations. The guidance for research is also carried out online, but students have to defend their academic thesis at the university/ college at the final submission.

So, if you have the dream of obtaining a PhD in India but cannot devote your time to attend regular classes, a distance PhD in India is your best option. You don't have to worry about the degree's value as it will be at par with the regular PhD degree in India. You will get similar job opportunities in the academic sector as well as the professional industry.

There are around 800 universities/ colleges in India that currently grant a PhD. The types of universities that offer PhD courses in India are mentioned below:

  • Central Universities (under the government of India).
  • State Universities (under respective state governments).
  • Private Universities.
  • Deemed to be Universities.
  • Institutes of National Importance.

For every type of university, there is a difference in fees and eligibility criteria. Anyway, as mentioned above, if your research is good, the university/ college will hardly matter. In simple words, the value of your PhD depends on your research and not the type of university you are pursuing it from.

  • Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU).
  • Vardhman Mahaveer Open University (VMOU).
  • Netaji Subhas Open University (NSOU).
  • Madhya Pradesh Bhoj Open University (MPBOU).
  • Nalanda Open University (NOU).
  • Dr B.R. Ambedkar Open University (BRAOU).

The eligibility criteria for pursuing a distance PhD in India is similar to a standard PhD and is mentioned below:

  • You will need a valid bachelor's degree. It should be obtained from a government-recognized university.
  • You will have to hold a valid master's (postgraduate) degree like MA/ MSc/ MCom/ MTech/ MBA/ MPhil in a relevant discipline obtained from a government-recognized university.
  • In your master's degree, you should have scored at least 55% marks in the overall subjects.
  • If you are a reserved category student from SC/ ST/ OBC background, you will receive a relaxation of either 5% or 10% in the required marks. This depends on the college/ university.
  • You will have to clear a PhD entrance test.
  • Some universities/ colleges in India may require the applicant to possess work experience in a relevant field.

The average tuition fee for a correspondence PhD PhD in India is less than the regular PhD course in India. It ranges from about INR 5,000 to INR 50,000 per semester, depending on the university/ college.

UGC (University Grants Commission) does not approve Distance PhD courses in India. The UGC released the circular containing this information in 2017, and it stated that the PhD degrees that have been granted by distance education mode would no longer be recognized. Therefore, only full-time PhD degrees and part-time Ph.D. degrees will be approved as valid PhD degrees in India. Students who want to pursue Correspondence PhD in India can now opt for UGC Approved Part-Time PhD Programs in India. Instead of a PhD in Computer Science through distance education, they can opt for Part-time courses in computer science, Management, law, and other programs.

Joined an online PhD programme? UGC, AICTE say it won’t recognise the degree

Ugc asked scholars not to be misled by advertisements for online phd programmes, saying such programmes were not recognised by the higher education controller.

NEW DELHI: The University Grants Commission and the All India Council of Technical Education (AICTE) on Friday issued a joint advisory against online PhD programmes offered by education technology (EdTech) companies in collaboration with foreign educational institutions.

UGC said the joint advisory with AICTE was issued after they came across several cases of students enrolling for online PhD courses offered by EdTech firms in collaboration with the foreign universities (UGC/Twitter)

According to a public notice issued by these controllers of higher and technical education, the online PhD programmes are not recognised as per their guidelines.

“In order to maintain the standards for awarding PhD degrees, the UGC has notified the UGC (Minimum Standards and Procedure for Award of MPhil, PhD degrees) Regulation 2016. It is mandatory for all higher educational institutions (HEIs) to follow UGC Regulations and its amendments for awarding PhD degrees,” the notice stated.

Asking students not to be misled by the advertisements for online PhD programmes offered by EdTech companies in collaboration with foreign educational institutions, the notice further said. “Such online PhD programmes are not recognised by the UGC. Aspiring students and the public at large, are requested to verify the authenticity of PhD programmes as per UGC Regulation 2016 before taking admission,”

Officials at UGC and AICTE said that several cases of students taking admissions in online PhD courses offered by EdTech firms in collaboration with the foreign universities have come to their notice of late. “Therefore, a fresh notification has been issued to apprise students that neither UGC or AICTE recognise online PhD courses,” said a senior official at AICTE.

Earlier this year, both the UGC and the AICTE issued a joint notice asking their recognised universities and institutions against offering courses in distance learning and online mode in association with Ed-tech companies, saying no “franchise” agreement is permissible according to norms earlier this year.

The UGC has also exempted students pursuing PhD programmes from taking two academic degrees simultaneously under its new regulation. Whereas, students from all other courses, including diploma, undergraduate and postgraduate programmes, will be able to pursue two academic programmes either in physical mode or open or distance mode under guidelines issued in April.

Published on: Jul 19, 2022 | Categories: Distance Education |

Ph.D. Via Distance Learning

A doctor of Philosophy is commonly abbreviated as a Ph.D. It is a higher level of education—students who have completed their master’s degree at any accredited university. Students who want to become experts in a specific field can pursue a Ph.D. in that program. Students must pass a national or university-level entrance exam before enrolling in a Ph.D. program.

It is a research-based doctorate program that attracts students who are interested in in-depth and lengthy studies. This is a three-year research and thesis course available in all streams, with students able to enroll in topics related to the arts, science, or commerce.

Ph.D. Distance Learning Admission Process-

  • The Ph.D. program is a doctorate-level program. It is possible to study it for three to six years. The Ph.D. program fee varies by institution across the country.
  • This higher degree program requires a master’s degree with a minimum of 55%. Admission to the Ph.D. distance degree program will be based on entrance exams such as the UGC-NET or the CSIR NET.

Furthermore, individuals will be able to study in their comfort, thanks to the PhD distance program . The scope of the Ph.D. degree is discussed further in this article. In addition, important information such as the admission process and various university fees will be obtained.

Ph.D. Distance Education Advantages

Distance learning, as the name suggests, saves time because it eliminates the need for commuting. This saves money and time that would otherwise be spent traveling back and forth.

Studying from any place – One does not have to live in the same city or country to attend the learning institution of one’s choice while pursuing Distance Education. It is possible to study from anywhere.

Comfort Level – Distance education gives a person a level of comfort that they would not have otherwise. Meanwhile, one can finish his or her chores. Some classrooms lack sufficient seating and other basic amenities, making learning difficult. When at home, one can sit wherever he or she wants.

Versatile – Distance Education provides students with unrivaled flexibility. People who, for example, are stay-at-home mothers, full-time workers, or military personnel may find it difficult to attend a regular institution. Many online education programs allow you to work at your own pace and schedule your studies around other obligations.

Many scholars are passionate about their subjects and want to invent or discover something that will make others’ lives easier while also bringing them recognition. The Ph.D. students devote their time to their research. Scholars teach others, earning respect and spreading quality knowledge. Once the Ph.D. is completed, students have numerous opportunities to earn a good living.

Bibhu Deb Scholar, Doctoral Program (WP) Batch- 2022

The overall experience of the recent immersion program was highly satisfying. Nothing quite matches the energy of in-person meetings. We had the privilege of attending the dynamic pre-conference sessions of iMarC, setting the tone for the immersion program. Professor Weng Marc Lim’s session stood out as a captivating highlight, offering profound insights. Professor Murugan’s SLR classes were instrumental in bringing clarity to complex concepts. Moreover, the opportunity to engage with supervisors and TAC members fostered fruitful idea exchanges. Meetings with the Director, Dean (Academics), and Dean (Research) provided valuable perspectives on the institute’s expectations. The Ph.D. Chairperson’s reassurance of the institute’s high standards left a lasting impression, giving us a clear understanding of what lies ahead.

Harish Scholar, Doctoral Program (WP) Batch- 2023

The immersion program was a very well-crafted program. The Chief Guest of the program, Mr. Lim gave important insights on skills required to write a good paper that I can immediately apply. The ease with which he taught and made everything look so easy gave us a lot of confidence. Important topics were covered and emphasized, deepening my understanding and broadening my perspective. Session on Time Series Analysis and PLS- SEM were also very helpful and gave us enough food for thought.

I would have loved to stay in the Campus close to the professors to have more time for interactions and that is one area which the PhD office can explore for our next immersion. Overall, I would highly recommend this program to any scholar.

Students with 4-year bachelor's degrees, 75% can directly pursue PhD: UGC chief

  • Four-year undergraduate degree holders now eligible for NET and PhD, per UGC Chairman
  • UGC relaxes NET eligibility criteria, allows four-year degree holders to pursue PhD directly
  • UGC-NET exam this year to be offline, scheduled for June 16; application process open till May

Students with four-year undergraduate degrees can now directly appear for NET and pursue PhD, according to University Grants Commission (UGC) Chairman Jagadesh Kumar. To pursue a PhD with or without a Junior Research Fellowship (JRF), the candidates will require a minimum of 75 percent marks or equivalent grades in their four-year undergraduate course.

So far, a candidate for the National Eligibility Test (NET) needed a master's degree with a minimum of 55 percent marks. The exam this year will be conducted in offline mode instead of a Computer-Based Test. Tests for all subjects will be conducted on June 16.

"The candidates with four-year undergraduate degrees can now directly pursue PhD and appear for NET. Such candidates are allowed to appear (for tests) in a subject in which they want to pursue a PhD irrespective of the discipline in which they have obtained the four-year bachelor's degree," Kumar told PTI.

"Candidates having passed a four-year or eight-semester bachelor's degree programme should have a minimum of 75 percent marks in aggregate or its equivalent grade on a point scale wherever the grading system is followed," the UGC chairman said.

A relaxation of five percent marks or its equivalent grade may be allowed for those belonging to SC, ST, OBC (non-creamy layer), differently-abled, economically weaker sections and other categories of candidates as per the decision of the UGC from time to time, he added. UGC-NET is an exam to determine the eligibility of Indian nationals for the "award of Junior Research Fellowship and appointment as assistant professor", "appointment as assistant professor and admission to PhD" and "admission to PhD only" in Indian universities and colleges.

Creating a sustainable growth strategy for India

Date: friday 3 may, 18:00 - 19:30 venue: online and the old theatre, lse.

Lifting millions out of poverty in India requires rapid economic growth and energy use. At the same time, environmental pollution and climate change create significant barriers to success.

Understanding how to overcome both these challenges at the same time is one of the most important policy problems facing India. It is also a problem that confronts many other developing countries whose policymakers may look to India’s choices for guidance. Any solutions will require increasing support for innovative, applied research and building collaborative international networks of researchers interested in this problem.

The India Sustainable Growth Conference at LSE provides a forum for sharing ideas in this space, as well as inviting discussion and debate. Jointly organised by the International Growth Centre (IGC), LSE STICERD’s Economics of Environment and Energy Programme, University of Warwick and Indian Statistical Institute, the conference aims to bring together PhD students from across the world working on environmental economics, and leading faculty also working at the intersection of environment and economics in India, alongside policymakers in India. It follows on from LSE’s Environment Camp designed to provide PhD students from all fields of economics the opportunity to present new research on environmental issues.
