Slide 2: What is Ramadan?

Ramadan is the name of the 9th month in the Islamic calendar and is considered a very holy time for Muslims. It is the month in which the Qur’an was first revealed to the Prophet Muhammad, and a period of contemplation and reflection on its meanings. It is also a month of fasting, extra worship and charity, and a special time for family, friends, and communities to gather to break their fast together. In fact, Muslims look forward to its start and are sad to see it end since it is a period of slowing down, reflecting on one’s life, and trying to better oneself spiritually as well as in one’s character.

Slide 3: When is Ramadan?

The Islamic calendar is lunar, which means that it begins and ends with the new moon. Because it is lunar, the entire calendar, including Ramadan, moves 11 days earlier each year. It takes 33 years to go around the entire calendar year. In 2024, Ramadan is scheduled to begin on March 11th and end on April 9th. (Because it is a lunar calendar, the actual date may vary by one day). Muslims wish each other a blessed Ramadan with the greeting  Ramadan mubarak!

Slide 4: What does the Ramadan fast entail?

The fast includes refraining from food, drink, and intimacy during daylight hours. Muslims fast in Ramadan during the sunlit hours, from before dawn until sunset each day for 29 or 30 days. Depending on the time of year with longer days in the summer and shorter days in the winter, the fast lasts between 12-16 hours.

Slide 5: What are the goals of fasting?

Fasting in Ramadan is the fourth pillar of Islam and is called  sawm  or  siyam  in Arabic. The goals of fasting are multiple, the primary one being to attain piety or God-consciousness, as the Qur’an states, “O you who believe, fasting is prescribed for you as it was prescribed for those before you, that you may develop God-consciousness.” (Qur’an 2:183). Fasting helps Muslims draw closer to God by sacrificing their most basic needs of food and drink as well as through extra devotional activities. Muslims try to reconnect with the Qur’an by attempting to read it in its entirety during the month.  Ramadan is a month of intense spiritual rejuvenation, self-reflection and introspection as Muslims attempt to avoid negative actions such as arguing or speaking ill of others and cultivate good character through acts of kindness. Fasting also helps Muslims build their willpower and learn self-control, gratitude for what they have, and compassion for those less fortunate. Ramadan is a time to be extra charitable and especially generous to those in need.

Slide 6: What is a typical day in Ramadan like?

During a typical day in Ramadan, observant Muslims rise before dawn to eat a small meal similar to breakfast before performing the early morning prayer. They may go back to sleep or go to work or school, continuing their normal schedule or making adjustments in the times they start and end work, depending on their work schedule and preference. They break their fast after sunset, either at home or in the mosque if it offers daily fast-breaking dinners, which is followed by the sunset prayer. It is customary to invite one’s family and friends to share in breaking the fast. During Ramadan, those who are fasting make extra efforts to perform all five daily prayers. In addition to the regular prayers, there are special Ramadan prayers called  taraweeh  that follow the night prayer .

Slide 7: What are special Ramadan foods?

It is a prophetic tradition and widespread custom to break the fast with dates and water or milk. Every ethnic group follows its own traditional ways for breaking the fast (known as  iftar  in Arabic), with some cultures serving fruit and others serving soup or appetizers. Ramadan dinners also feature special ethnic foods, especially when guests, extended family, and friends are invited. It is highly encouraged to break the fast with others, and, according to prophetic tradition, the person who feeds a fasting person shares the reward for fasting.

Slide 8: Who is exempt from fasting?

People who are exempt from fasting include the elderly, sick, travelers, and pregnant or breast-feeding women. People may make up a fast by fasting the days they missed when they are able to at a later time or by feeding the poor if unable to fast indefinitely. Children are not required to fast but often begin fasting at age 9 or 10 to emulate their siblings or parents.

Slide 9: Accommodating Fasting Employees & Students

This section describes some best practices for accommodating fasting employees and students.

Slide 10: How does fasting impact employees?

Some fasting employees may request an adjustment in their schedules during Ramadan because of the challenging schedule of waking up early and sleeping late and because of the timing of breaking the fast, depending on the time of year. If a lunch meeting is scheduled in Ramadan, Muslim employees can attend but will not be able to eat. Some companies encourage their Muslim employees to host an  iftar  or fast-breaking dinner for their co-workers. Employees may want to use their vacation time during the last ten days of Ramadan, which is a time of increased devotion.

Slide 11: A humorous look at challenges of fasting in the workplace

Watch this clip  to get a humorous look at some of the challenges of fasting in the workplace!

Slide 12: What are some challenges for fasting students in school?

While they are not required to fast before puberty, younger children may fast in emulation of their parents or older siblings. By middle school most observant Muslim youth will fast the entire month. Fasting students may also attend special night prayers with their families. The combination of fasting and late nights may impact students’ energy level at recess or in P.E. and make them less attentive in class.

Slide 13: How to best accommodate fasting students in school?

A good way to help fasting students feel included and to promote awareness is to announce the start of Ramadan in the school newsletter or include it on the school calendar. The Ramadan greeting is Ramadan mubarak , which means “blessed Ramadan.” Fasting students should be allowed to spend their lunchtime in the library or computer lab and be excused from strenuous activities in P.E.  Younger students may want to save treats from parties which take place during class time. If students or their parents are interested in explaining Ramadan to the class, that is a great way to make the fasting students feel included and to educate the rest of the class about Ramadan.

Slide 14: How is Ramadan observed   around the world?

Ramadan is celebrated by Muslims across the world in a variety of ways. In many Muslim-majority countries Ramadan is celebrated by decorating with lights and lanterns. In places like Turkey and Kenya, they beat drums to wake people up for  suhur  (pre-fast meal). While the call to prayer ( adhan ) after sunset announces the end of the fast in most Muslim-majority countries, some countries have distinct ways of signaling the time for fast breaking such as Indonesia, where it is marked with a giant drum called a  bedug.  It is customary for many mosques to serve dates, fruit, and appetizers to worshippers for  iftar or breaking the fast. Every country has special Ramadan foods such as  samosas  in South Asia. In many Muslim-majority countries, the marketplace stays open late for people to shop after the night prayers.

Slide 15: Celebrating the end of Ramadan

Muslims celebrate the conclusion of Ramadan with a holiday called  Eid ul-Fitr , which mean the “Festival of Breaking the Fast.” It comes the day after Ramadan and also follows the Islamic lunar calendar, so it occurs eleven days earlier every year. The three-day holiday is celebrated with special prayers, and gifts, money and new clothes for children, various types of entertainment at the park or in rented halls, and of course lots of good food! The holiday greeting is Eid mubarak which means “blessed holiday.”

This presentation aims to educate children about Ramadan. The slides are colourful, engaging and informative.

Why do Muslims fast in Ramadan?

Muslims fast because Allah tells us to. Fasting is a way to show Allah we love Him. Allah says that fasting is just for him and he will reward us for the sacrifice we make. Fasting also helps us to be grateful for what we have and to think about those who don’t have as much as us.

What are the benefits of fasting?

Fasting helps our bodies and minds stay healthy. It teaches us to be patient. Fasting bring us closer to Allah as we fast just for Him. It also increases our faith. Fasting is also a shield which will protect us from the hellfire. Can you think of any other benefits?

Iftaar is the evening meal we eat to break our fast. It is eaten when the sun has set and when Maghrib has started. We should not overeat at Iftaar as this goes against the Sunnah of the Prophet Muhammad (pbuh).

Do you know the sunnahs of eating?

Ramadan is a month in which people read more Quran. When we read the Quran, we are reading Allah’s words. Understanding the Quran is also important as it will help us become better Muslims and better people.

How can we complete the whole Quran during Ramadan?

A woman displaying her mehndi (henna) on occasion of Eid-al-Fitr, celebrated at the end of the holy month of Ramadan.

Ramadan is a holy month of fasting, introspection and prayer for Muslims, the followers of Islam. It is celebrated as the month during which Muhammad received the initial revelations of the Quran, the holy book for Muslims. Fasting is one of the five fundamental principles of Islam. Each day during Ramadan, Muslims do not eat or drink from dawn to sunset. They are also supposed to avoid impure thoughts and bad behavior.

Muslims break their daily fasts by sharing meals with family and friends, and the end of Ramadan is celebrated with a three-day festival known as Eid al-Fitr, one of Islam’s major holidays. Ramadan always falls on the ninth month of the 12-month Islamic calendar. Ramadan 2024 began on the evening of Sunday, March 10, following the moon sighting, and concludes at sundown on Tuesday, April 9.

Facts About Islam

Islam is the world’s second largest religion after Christianity and has more than 1 billion followers. Islam originated in Arabia and has spread all over the world.

Countries with the largest Muslim populations include Indonesia, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Nigeria, Egypt, Turkey and Iran. There are an estimated 7 million Muslims in America, along with Islamic places of worship, called mosques, in all 50 states.

Did you know? America's first mosque was built by Lebanese immigrants in North Dakota in the 1920s. The mosque was torn down in the 1970s and later replaced. What's believed to be the oldest surviving mosque in the U.S. was constructed in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, in the 1930s.

Muslims believe that around A.D. 610 a man named Muhammad (c. 570-632) from the Arabian city of Mecca started receiving revelations from God, or Allah, via the angel Gabriel. The revelations were collected into a 114-chapter holy book known as the Quran (or Koran), which Muslims believe contains the exact words of God.

Muhammad is, according to Muslims, the final prophet in a line of prophets (including Adam, Abraham, Moses and Jesus ) who were chosen by God to act as messengers and teach mankind. Muslims believe there is one all-knowing God, and people can achieve salvation by following his commandments. In Arabic, Islam means “submission” or “surrender” (to God).

A series of formal acts of worship, known as the Five Pillars of Islam, are fundamental to the lives of Muslims. The pillars include shahada (a declaration of faith: “There is no deity but God, and Muhammad is the messenger of God”); prayer (Muslims pray five times a day); zakat (charitable giving); fasting and pilgrimage (Muslims are supposed to make a trip, or “hajj,” to the city of Mecca, Saudi Arabia, at least once in a lifetime if they are physically and financially able).

When Is Ramadan?

Ramadan 2024 began at sunset on Sunday, March 10, and conclude at sundown on Tuesday, April 9.

Ramadan is the ninth month of the 12-month Islamic calendar, a lunar calendar that’s based on the phases of the moon. The lunar calendar falls short of the solar calendar by 11 days.

As a result, Ramadan doesn’t start on the same date each year and instead, over time, passes through all the seasons

Why Is Ramadan Celebrated?

Ramadan is celebrated as the month during which Muhammad received the initial revelations of what became the Quran, the holy book for Muslims, from God.

The Quran states:

“The month of Ramadhan [is that] in which was revealed the Qur’an, guidance for the people and clear proofs of guidance and criterion. So whoever sights [the new moon of] the month, let him fast it.”

The Rules of Ramadan

During Ramadan, Muslims fast from dawn to dusk each day. They are supposed to avoid eating, drinking, smoking and sexual activity, as well as unkind or impure thoughts and words and immoral behavior.

Ramadan is a time to practice self-restraint and self-reflection. Fasting is seen as a way to cleanse the soul and have empathy for those in the world who are hungry and less fortunate. Muslims go to work and school and take care of their usual activities during Ramadan; however, some also read the entire Quran, say special prayers and attend mosques more frequently during this time.

All Muslims who have reached puberty and are in good health are required to fast. The sick and elderly, along with travelers, pregnant women and those who are nursing are exempt, although they are supposed to make up for the missed fast days sometime in the future or help feed the poor.

The first pre-dawn meal of the day during Ramadan is called “suhoor.” Each day’s fast is broken with a meal known as “iftar.” Traditionally, a date is eaten to break the fast. Iftars are often elaborate feasts celebrated with family and friends. The types of foods served vary according to culture.

Eid al-Fitr

The conclusion of Ramadan is marked with a major celebration known as Eid al-Fitr (or Eid ul-Fitr), the Feast of Fast-Breaking. It starts the day after Ramadan ends and lasts for three days.

Eid al-Fitr includes special prayers and meals with friends and relatives, and gifts are often exchanged.

In 1996, then-first lady Hillary Clinton hosted the first Eid al-Fitr dinner at the White House . President Bill Clinton and subsequent presidents continued the tradition during their terms in office.

Celebrating Ramadan

Learn about this sacred month in the religion of Islam.

Lights blink on in homes as night falls on a community. The scent of food begins to waft into the evening air. It smells extra delicious to the people in the homes, who haven’t eaten all day. They’re observing Ramadan, a sacred month in the religion of Islam. And the darkened sky is a signal that it’s time to feast!

Ramadan is the ninth month on the Islamic calendar, which marks important holidays and events for Muslims (people who practice Islam). During Ramadan people fast, or refrain from eating and drinking, while it’s light outside. Once the sun sets, families meet for big meals that may include stew, rice, dates, lentils, and more. People also have a morning meal before the sun rises.

For the hundreds of millions of Muslims around the world who observe Ramadan, the month is a time to focus on their faith and also perform generous acts . People raise money and donate supplies to help others in need. And many fast to remind themselves about those in the world who don’t have enough to eat.

After the last day of Ramadan, a three-day festival is held. Families and friends gather together to celebrate. They sometimes decorate homes with lights and exchange gifts. As for food, people eat all sorts of things including candies and pastries—and during this time, fasting is not allowed.

Photos: Deaf community celebrates Ramadan with iftar meal

A person holds of their hands in a signing motion.

At a celebration during the holy month of Ramadan, community members gathered Saturday for the Deaf Iftar Celebration.

The iftar — or meal to break the fast for the day — offered community members a chance to learn about culturally and linguistically appropriate services, all while enjoying good food and company.

The event was hosted by the Minnesota Deaf Muslim Community and held at the Wilder Foundation in St. Paul.

Photographer Ben Brewer joined the celebration to document the community gathering for MPR News.

HACA: Gender discrimination persists in Moroccan Ramadan TV commercials

A recent study conducted by the High Authority for Audiovisual Communication (HACA) observed the persistent discriminatory representation of women in many public television commercials during Ramadan.

The study’s findings were unveiled on Tuesday during an interactive workshop in Rabat. This research initiative was part of the HACA’s commitment to promoting gender equality and its endorsement of the Marrakech Declaration on combating violence against women.

Titled “The Representation of Women in Audiovisual Advertising,” the study’s findings stem from a thorough analysis conducted over several years, scrutinizing over 750 advertisements aired during prime time on public television channels throughout the holy month of Ramadan from 2020 to 2023.

The analysis of the HACA underscored the persistence of sexist clichés in advertising, even with the notable decrease in overt gender stereotypes.

It highlighted a concerning trend where women continue to be predominantly portrayed within the domestic sphere, despite an increasing presence in professional settings. Conversely, men are more frequently depicted in positions of authority and control, while women are often portrayed as subordinate.

HACA also noted that several advertisements perpetuate messages and scenarios that validate the mental burden placed on women as primary or exclusive caregivers responsible for family well-being, household chores, and childcare duties.

Despite these disparities, the study also sheds light on some positive developments. Notably, there has been a significant decline in advertisements relying on gender stereotypes.

The same source disclosed, “Over nine years, the proportion of non-stereotypical advertisements has increased fivefold, rising from 9% in 2014 to 51% in 2023.”

Moreover, HACA observed a promising trend towards greater gender diversity and balanced representation of women and men in advertisements across various industries.

“Discriminatory and stereotypical representation of women and men in the media undermines societies’ potential for development and democratization,” asserted Latifa Akharbach, President of HACA, during the presentation of the study’s findings.

She urged, therefore, for collective mobilization to ensure fair representation of women in the media and to promote parity, diversity, and citizenship equality, which is essential for long-lasting progress in this area.

Four Undergraduates Receive National Goldwater Scholarships

Awards support STEM student in furthering careers

Pictures clockwise from top left: Michelle Si, Ayush Jain, Juliet Jiang and Marie-Hélène Tomé

Four Duke University undergraduates have received the Barry M. Goldwater Scholarship, a federally endowed award that supports students in pursuing careers in the fields of mathematics, the natural sciences and engineering.

Ayush Jain, Juliet Jiang, Michelle Si and Marie-Hélène Tomé are among the 508 students nationwide awarded Goldwater Scholarships for the 2024-2025 academic year.

The Goldwater Scholars were chosen based on academic merit from a pool of 1,353 natural science, engineering and mathematics students nominated by the institutional representatives of 446 colleges and universities nationwide. Most Goldwater Scholars plan to pursue a Ph.D. in their field of interest.

Each Goldwater Scholar annually receives an amount equal to the cost of tuition, mandatory fees, books and room and board minus the amount of support provided for by other sources, up to a maximum of $7,500 per full academic year.

“Congratulations to these impressive Duke students on being named Goldwater Scholars,” said Duke Provost Alec D. Gallimore. “Because of Duke’s strong commitment to faculty mentorship of undergraduate research, they are already contributing to their academic disciplines through publications and presentations. We are incredibly proud of their achievements and wish them well in their fields, where they will undoubtedly continue to contribute to advancements in the world’s knowledge.”

Jain is a sophomore computer science and chemistry double major from Virginia Beach, Virginia. Under mentors professors Samuel Berchuck and David Page in biostatistics and bioinformatics, and professor Jian Pei in computer science, Jain designs machine-learning-based approaches to solve clinical medicine problems such as finding optimal drug doses, suggesting successful drug repurposing hypotheses, and to emulate clinical trials with causal inference.

While working with Dr. Anthony Philippakis and Marie-Laure Charpignon at the Broad Institute of MIT and Harvard, he proposed a novel hypergraph learning method for generating hypotheses for drug repurposing. Jain ultimately plans to use AI to design novel therapeutics for the world’s most pressing diseases. He will pursue a graduate degree at the intersection of medicine, computer science and systems pharmacology. Jain is the first author on two publications and has been invited to speak on his work at international conferences in his field.

From Winchester, Massachusetts, Jiang is a junior mathematics and biomedical engineering double major. Under the mentorship of professor of radiology Jeffrey Petrella and Penn State professor of mathematics Wenrui Hao, she studies a computational causal model that describes biomarker accumulation in the progression of Alzheimer’s disease, contributing to the rise of personalized medicine.

Jiang also conducts research with professor Amanda Randles in computational fluid dynamics, investigating the role of boundary conditions in the accuracy of computationally derived hemodynamic metrics. She is also exploring the application of autoregressive hidden Markov models in understanding behavioral patterns of Parkinson’s patients with professor Timothy Dunn.

Jiang’s research has produced four first and second author publications and presentations in fields that span mathematics and engineering. She plans to pursue a Ph.D. in biomedical engineering or computational neuroscience, studying neurodegenerative diseases and mathematical modeling.

Si is a junior mathematics major who plans to pursue a career in algorithmic game theory and computational economics. As an A.B. Duke Scholar from San Jose, California, she has participated in a rigorous internship through Microsoft Research New England in the Econ-CS group and works closely with professor Jian Pei of the Department of Computer Science at Duke.

With professor Pei, Si conducts research regarding a counterfactual explanation of the Shapley value (a concept in cooperative game theory) in data marketplaces and is working towards a first author publication. This semester, she is studying abroad in Budapest, learning graph theory and counting and arranging in mathematics to further expand her theoretical skillset as well as conducting research on unit distance graphs with the Renyi Institute. After earning a Ph.D. in computer science, Si plans to pursue a career in researching data and information markets.

Originally from Ardsley, New York, Tomé is a junior mathematics major and computer science and linguistics minor. She has participated in professor Ken Ono’s REU at the University of Virginia on number theory, which ignited her passion for the subfield. This led to a single author paper on finite formulas for the class number effectively answering a conjecture of the German mathematician Erich Hecke that had remained open since 1920.

This work was presented at the 2024 Joint Mathematics Meetings and will soon appear in a well-known journal in the field of number theory.

At Duke, under the mentorship of professor Lillian Pierce, Tomé has completed an independent study leading to an expository paper on the proof of an important bound in analytic number theory. Under the guidance of professor Samit Dasgupta, she will continue her research in algebraic number theory. Tomé plans to earn a Ph.D. in pure mathematics, teach at the university level to share her passion for mathematics with others, and conduct research in algebraic and analytic number theory.

Since its first award in 1989, the foundation has awarded 10,720 scholarships worth over $70 million. Ninety-seven Duke students have won Goldwater scholarships since 1990.

Duke students and alumni can receive support for opportunities like the Goldwater Scholarship from the Nationally Competitive Scholarships team at the Office of University Scholars and Fellows.

For more information on the Goldwater Scholarship and other awards, visit the Office of University Scholars and Fellows website.
