The question of why we need to think about how we research race demands a conceptualization of race that captures both its social construction and its temporal evolution. We need both an understanding of race and clarity about how we talk about it in our design and conduct of research, and in how we interpret and apply it in our findings. As a field, we can use research on race and racism in education to help construct social change. Nebraska edited book is first to feature Extension’s role in the lives of children, families

A new volume by two University of Nebraska–Lincoln professors is among the first to highlight the role of Extension in the lives of children and families.

“Extension touches the lives of individuals and families in meaningful and impactful ways, however, often from the background,” said Maria de Guzman, professor and Extension specialist in child, youth and family studies, chair of the Department of Textiles, Merchandising and Fashion Design and lead editor. “For decades, Extension has been transforming the ways in which we produce and consume food, plan our finances, and support children, youth and families.”

“Extension Education and the Social Sciences: Uplifting Children, Youth, Families, and Communities,” released April 4 by Cambridge University Press, highlights the ways that Extension contributes to the well-being of children, families, and communities through nutrition, early childhood education, youth entrepreneurship, social media other programming to underserved audiences.

“Extension is leading the way in addressing complex issues at the local, state and national levels and this volume offers suggestion to foster collaborations between Extension and non-Extension scholars and practitioners,” said Holly Hatton, an associate professor in Child, Youth, and Family Studies, early childhood Extension specialist and editor.

It features 26 contributors, leading and emerging scholars in various areas of Extension from across the country.

De Guzman says the book aims to encourage others to engage with Extension and therefore with people in surrounding communities in intentional, impactful and sustainable ways.

“We hope that readers gain a better understanding of Extension and how they can partner with us in engaging directly with communities,” de Guzman said. “More recently, there has been a focus on research impact and community engagement. The book highlights how Extension has been doing this for over 100 years.”

Infancy is the age at which someone is most likely to live in a homeless shelter. If that sounds surprising, consider that poverty is the main reason families with young children become homeless. Given the high costs of childcare across the country, often parents leave the workforce to care for their young children. That loss of income plus the cost of housing can sometimes leave families without a home.

To help reduce homelessness among young families, Beth Shinn is beginning a new study to test whether unconditional direct cash payments and peer support to families who are homeless will help reduce the length of shelter stays and improve other aspects of their lives.

“This study was essentially designed by lived-expertise consultants, a team of mothers who had stayed in New York City shelters with their young children. When we asked them what would help families leave a shelter most rapidly and promote family well-being, the consultants said cash and peer support,” said Shinn, Cornelius Vanderbilt Chair and professor of human and organizational development at Vanderbilt Peabody College of education and human development .

For decades Shinn has studied how to prevent and end homelessness, including in the Family Options Study , the first large-scale analysis of housing program options to end homelessness, now in its 13 th year. Supported by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, this study found that housing vouchers were effective in stabilizing long-term housing.

The success of housing vouchers in the Family Options study informs Shinn’s rationale for testing the efficacy of unconditional direct cash payments, guided by the assumption that families, when given the funds, will know how to best spend the money to ensure they are able to leave and stay out of homeless shelters.

Shinn is collaborating with the Women in Need shelter system, the largest non-profit family shelter system in New York City. An anonymous family foundation is supporting the study with a $785,050 grant. One hundred families with a child two years old or younger at the start of the study will receive $17,000 per year (paid twice per month) and volunteer peer support for two years. Peers are women who have also gone through the shelter system as well as the numerous processes to establish housing and secure additional resources, such as opening a bank account and finding employment.

The study will include a comparison sample of 100 additional families at the WIN shelter who will only receive $600 per year without specialized peer support.  Both groups will get the usual care of the shelter system. Families who could have qualified for the study but aren’t in either the active or comparison groups will make up a larger passive group.

The primary outcome of the study will be to see whether recipients of the larger cash payments have shorter stays in the homeless shelters compared to the other two groups.

“We expect not only shorter stays in homeless shelters, but based on the findings from the Family Options Study, we also expect reductions in distress, domestic violence, substance abuse, and food insecurity, as well as better outcomes for children,” Shinn said.

Bitcoin miners are preparing for the halving , a key event in bitcoin's cycle that halves the reward for mining new blocks and occurs roughly every four years—or every 210,000 blocks. This upcoming halving will reduce the reward from 6.25 to 3.125 bitcoin per block, slashing the daily mining output from 900 to 450 bitcoin, impacting miners’ profitability.

Insights from leading figures in the mining sector, including Paolo Ardoino, CEO of Tether, Geoff Morphey, CEO of BitFarms, Drew Armstrong, president of Cathedra, and Thomas Pacchia, a seasoned bitcoin mining advisor, shed light on the sector’s preparedness and strategic shifts.

Understanding the relationship between bitcoin’s price, hash rate and mining profitability is essential. When the price of bitcoin goes up, mining becomes more profitable, encouraging miners to increase their operations and computing power. However, if the price falls, the hash rate may decrease because it’s less profitable. The halving doubles the cost of producing each bitcoin while the operational expenses remain constant.

BitFarms is proactively gearing up for the bitcoin halving with a strategy centered on sustainability and efficiency. Morphey shares, “Since 2020, we’ve focused on robust management and low operational costs to ensure our resilience through market cycles. Our commitment to green energy, demonstrated by our nearly complete reliance on renewable sources, positions us for sustained profitability post-halving.”

The company improves its renewable mining operations through advanced cooling technologies and strategic partnerships, such as its collaboration with Paraguay’s National Operator or Administración Nacional de Electricidad. “By utilizing natural resources for power and pioneering in cooling solutions, we aim to maintain our competitive edge while setting new industry standards for environmentally responsible mining,” Morphey concludes.

Tether has also ventured into bitcoin mining and aims to leverage its expertise to enhance the network's sustainability, marking a move towards eco-friendly mining practices. Ardoino highlights Tether’s commitment to sustainability: “We’re investing in renewable energy sources like wind, solar, and hydro to power our mining operations. This aligns with our environmental goals and ensures long-term profitability and resilience.” Tether’s initiative reflects a broader industry trend towards mining bitcoin using wasted or stranded energy.

The bitcoin halving occurs about every four years.

They have a proactive approach for the bitcoin halving, reinforcing its commitment to sustainable mining practices and long-term viability. Ardoino told me, “Our development of the Moria platform—an optimization tool for mining operations—exemplifies our approach. Moria enables us to efficiently manage and scale our operations by providing a unified interface for monitoring and predictive analysis, ensuring our mining endeavors remain profitable in the face of reduced block rewards. This strategic emphasis on sustainability and technological innovation underscores Tether’s preparation for the halving, aiming to maintain operational efficiency and profitability while fostering environmental responsibility.”

Armstrong of Cathedra brings a strategic operational focus to the conversation. “Bitcoin BTC mining is a brutal form of commodity production,” he remarked, emphasizing the necessity of operational excellence and efficiency. Cathedra’s strategy involves fine-tuning mining operations to remain profitable post-halving, leveraging cutting edge-tech to optimize energy consumption and cost.

Pacchia, with his expertise in both bitcoin mining and law, emphasizes the need for a comprehensive approach. With his dual hats as a bitcoin mining advisor and a former derivatives lawyer, Pacchia stresses the importance of readiness for the halving. “It’s not just about technology but also about understanding the market dynamics and regulatory environment,” he notes.
