Inequality in Key Skills of City Youth: An International Comparison

Edited by Stephen Lamb and Russell W. Rumberger

This groundbreaking research volume addresses the topic of educational inequality from a global perspective. It includes 16 chapters from an international group of scholars who examine how well city school systems from around the world are preparing young people, particularly poor and minority students, with the skills they will need for further study, work, and life overall. While skills in key domains such as science, math, language, and civics have been center stage in international comparisons, there has been growing recognition of the effects that education has on the development of broader sets of capabilities such as social and emotional skills (also known as “noncognitive” or “21st-century” skills) that can affect the success of students in school and beyond. This volume aims to address the shortage of international data on the wide range of skills that students need to learn, enabling researchers to compare the types and causes of educational inequality in skills within and between cities.

Volatility in State Spending for Higher Education Edited by Jennifer A. Delaney

The severity of cuts and the unpredictability in state funding for higher education have garnered headlines across the nation since the turn of the present century. In this context, the authors in this new groundbreaking volume argue that too little attention is paid to the consequences of volatility in funding, as most discussions focus on levels of funding. Their research addresses an important blind spot in the academic literature since predictability matters—to institutions, students, families, and states. In addition, the risks of operating in an uncertain financial environment have led to behaviors that are not always in the best interests of states, institutions, faculty, students, or the public good.

Handbook of Research on Teachers of Color and Indigenous Teachers

Edited by Conra D. Gist and Travis J. Bristol

Teachers of Color and Indigenous Teachers are underrepresented in public schools across the United States of America, with Black, Indigenous, and People of Color making up roughly 37% of the adult population and 50% of children, but just 19% of the teaching force. Yet research over decades has indicated their positive impact on student learning and social and emotional development, particularly for Students of Color and Indigenous Students. A first of its kind, the  Handbook of Research on Teachers of Color and Indigenous Teachers  addresses key issues and obstacles to ethnoracial diversity across the life course of teachers’ careers, such as recruitment and retention, professional development, and the role of minority-serving institutions. Including chapters from leading researchers and policy makers, the  Handbook  is designed to be an important resource to help bridge the gap between scholars, practitioners, and policy makers. In doing so, this research will serve as a launching pad for discussion and change at this critical moment in our country’s history. The volume’s goal is to drive conversations around the issue of ethnoracial teacher diversity and to provide concrete practices for policy makers and practitioners to enable them to make evidence-based decisions for supporting an ethnoracially diverse educator workforce, now and in the future.

Fairness in Educational and Psychological Testing: Examining Theoretical Research, Practice, and Policy Implications of the 2014 Standards

Edited by Jessica L. Jonson and Kurt F. Geisinger

This book examines scholarship, best practice methodologies, and examples of policy and practice from various professional fields in education and psychology to illuminate the elevated emphasis on test fairness in the 2014  Standards for Educational and Psychological Testing . Together, the chapters provide a survey of critical and current issues with a view to broadening and contextualizing the fairness guidelines for different types of tests, test takers, and testing contexts.  Researchers and practitioners from school psychology, clinical/counseling psychology, industrial/organizational psychology, and education will find the content useful in thinking more acutely about fairness in testing in their work.  The book also has chapters that address implications for policy makers, and, in some cases, the public. These discussions are offered as a starting point for future scholarship on the theoretical, empirical, and applied aspects of fairness in testing particularly given the ever-increasing importance of addressing equity in testing.

Edited by Sharon Ryan, M. Elizabeth Graue, Vivian L Gadsden, and Felice J. Levine

This volume employs a multidisciplinary approach to research on a high-profile topic very much on the agenda of state and national policy leaders: early childhood development and education. It aims to reflect how scholarly perspectives shape the contours of knowledge generation, and to illuminate the gaps that prevent productive interchange among scholars who value equity in the opportunities available to young children, their families, and teachers/caregivers. The editors and authors identify and prioritize critical research areas; assess the state of the field in terms of promising research designs and methodologies; and identify capacity-building needs and potential cross-group collaborations. research for education book

Edited by Adrienne D. Dixson, Gloria J. Ladson-Billings, Cecilia E. Suarez, William T. Trent, and James D. Anderson.

The question of why we need to think about how we research race demands a conceptualization of race that captures both its social construction and its temporal evolution. We need both an understanding of race and clarity about how we talk about it in our design and conduct of research, and in how we interpret and apply it in our findings. As a field, we can use research on race and racism in education to help construct social change. Our purpose with this volume is to underscore the persistence of the discriminatory actions—processes—and the normalization of the use of race (and class)—conditions—to justify the existing and growing disparity between the quality of life and opportunity for middle-class and more affluent Whites and that for people of color and people of color who live in poverty. As editors of this volume, we wonder what more we could learn and understand about the process and condition of race if we dare to ask bold questions about race and racism and commit to methods and analyses that respect the experiences and knowledges of our research participants and partners.

research for education book

Edited by Laura W. Perna and Edward J. Smith Also known as “free tuition” and “free college” programs, college promise programs are an emerging approach for increasing higher education attainment of people in particular places. To maximize the effectiveness of their efforts and investments, program leaders and policymakers need research-based evidence to inform program design, implementation, and evaluation. With the goal of addressing this knowledge need, this volume presents a collection of research studies that examine several categories and variations of college promise programs. These theoretically grounded empirical investigations use varied data sources and analytic techniques to examine the effects of college promise programs that have different design features and operate in different places. Individually and collectively, the results of these studies have implications for the design and implementation of promise programs if these programs are to create meaningful improvements in attainment for people from underserved groups. The authors’ efforts also provide a useful foundation for the next generation of college promise research.

IEA Research for Educators

Evidence-based and Instructional Materials for Teachers Using Data from the International Association for the Evaluation of Educational Achievement (IEA)

About this book series

The International Association for the Evaluation of Educational Achievement (IEA) is an independent nongovernmental nonprofit cooperative of national research institutions and governmental research agencies that originated in Hamburg, Germany in 1958. For over 60 years, IEA has developed and conducted high-quality, large-scale comparative studies in education to support countries’ efforts to engage in national strategies for educational monitoring and improvement.

IEA’s comprehensive data provide an unparalleled longitudinal resource for researchers and educators. The founders of IEA viewed the world as a natural educational laboratory, where different school systems experiment in different ways to obtain optimal results from educating their youth. They assumed that if research could obtain evidence from across a wide range of systems, the variability would be sufficient to reveal important relationships that would otherwise escape detection within a single education system. They strongly rejected data-free assertions about the relative merits of various education systems and aimed to identify factors that would have meaningful and consistent influences on educational outcomes.

In line with this, this series of peer-reviewed publications is established to contribute to educational practices. The goal is to inspire educators by translating IEA research findings into evidence-based practice, and to foster engagement and conversation between researchers and practitioners.

Nebraska edited book is first to feature Extension’s role in the lives of children, families

"Extension Education and the Social Sciences: Uplifting Children, Youth, Families, and Communities"

A new volume by two University of Nebraska–Lincoln professors is among the first to highlight the role of Extension in the lives of children and families.

“Extension touches the lives of individuals and families in meaningful and impactful ways, however, often from the background,” said Maria de Guzman, professor and Extension specialist in child, youth and family studies, chair of the Department of Textiles, Merchandising and Fashion Design and lead editor. “For decades, Extension has been transforming the ways in which we produce and consume food, plan our finances, and support children, youth and families.”

“Extension Education and the Social Sciences: Uplifting Children, Youth, Families, and Communities,” released April 4 by Cambridge University Press, highlights the ways that Extension contributes to the well-being of children, families, and communities through nutrition, early childhood education, youth entrepreneurship, social media other programming to underserved audiences.

“Extension is leading the way in addressing complex issues at the local, state and national levels and this volume offers suggestion to foster collaborations between Extension and non-Extension scholars and practitioners,” said Holly Hatton, an associate professor in Child, Youth, and Family Studies, early childhood Extension specialist and editor.

It features 26 contributors, leading and emerging scholars in various areas of Extension from across the country.

De Guzman says the book aims to encourage others to engage with Extension and therefore with people in surrounding communities in intentional, impactful and sustainable ways.

“We hope that readers gain a better understanding of Extension and how they can partner with us in engaging directly with communities,” de Guzman said. “More recently, there has been a focus on research impact and community engagement. The book highlights how Extension has been doing this for over 100 years.”

Other contributors from the university include Surin Kim, Jemalyn Griffin, Lisa Franzen-Castle, Michelle Krehbiel, Jean Ann Fischer and Anh Do.

Infancy is the age at which someone is most likely to live in a homeless shelter. If that sounds surprising, consider that poverty is the main reason families with young children become homeless. Given the high costs of childcare across the country, often parents leave the workforce to care for their young children. That loss of income plus the cost of housing can sometimes leave families without a home.

Marybeth Shinn (Vanderbilt)

To help reduce homelessness among young families, Beth Shinn is beginning a new study to test whether unconditional direct cash payments and peer support to families who are homeless will help reduce the length of shelter stays and improve other aspects of their lives.

“This study was essentially designed by lived-expertise consultants, a team of mothers who had stayed in New York City shelters with their young children. When we asked them what would help families leave a shelter most rapidly and promote family well-being, the consultants said cash and peer support,” said Shinn, Cornelius Vanderbilt Chair and professor of human and organizational development at Vanderbilt Peabody College of education and human development .

For decades Shinn has studied how to prevent and end homelessness, including in the Family Options Study , the first large-scale analysis of housing program options to end homelessness, now in its 13 th year. Supported by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, this study found that housing vouchers were effective in stabilizing long-term housing.

The success of housing vouchers in the Family Options study informs Shinn’s rationale for testing the efficacy of unconditional direct cash payments, guided by the assumption that families, when given the funds, will know how to best spend the money to ensure they are able to leave and stay out of homeless shelters.

Shinn is collaborating with the Women in Need shelter system, the largest non-profit family shelter system in New York City. An anonymous family foundation is supporting the study with a $785,050 grant. One hundred families with a child two years old or younger at the start of the study will receive $17,000 per year (paid twice per month) and volunteer peer support for two years. Peers are women who have also gone through the shelter system as well as the numerous processes to establish housing and secure additional resources, such as opening a bank account and finding employment.

The study will include a comparison sample of 100 additional families at the WIN shelter who will only receive $600 per year without specialized peer support.  Both groups will get the usual care of the shelter system. Families who could have qualified for the study but aren’t in either the active or comparison groups will make up a larger passive group.

The primary outcome of the study will be to see whether recipients of the larger cash payments have shorter stays in the homeless shelters compared to the other two groups.

“We expect not only shorter stays in homeless shelters, but based on the findings from the Family Options Study, we also expect reductions in distress, domestic violence, substance abuse, and food insecurity, as well as better outcomes for children,” Shinn said.

Beth Shinn teaches in the Community Development and Action M.Ed. program and the Community Research and Action Ph.D. program .

How bitcoin miners are preparing for the halving.

Technicians look at bitcoin mining at Bitfarms in Quebec in 2018.

Bitcoin miners are preparing for the halving , a key event in bitcoin's cycle that halves the reward for mining new blocks and occurs roughly every four years—or every 210,000 blocks. This upcoming halving will reduce the reward from 6.25 to 3.125 bitcoin per block, slashing the daily mining output from 900 to 450 bitcoin, impacting miners’ profitability.

Insights from leading figures in the mining sector, including Paolo Ardoino, CEO of Tether, Geoff Morphey, CEO of BitFarms, Drew Armstrong, president of Cathedra, and Thomas Pacchia, a seasoned bitcoin mining advisor, shed light on the sector’s preparedness and strategic shifts.

Understanding the relationship between bitcoin’s price, hash rate and mining profitability is essential. When the price of bitcoin goes up, mining becomes more profitable, encouraging miners to increase their operations and computing power. However, if the price falls, the hash rate may decrease because it’s less profitable. The halving doubles the cost of producing each bitcoin while the operational expenses remain constant.

BitFarms is proactively gearing up for the bitcoin halving with a strategy centered on sustainability and efficiency. Morphey shares, “Since 2020, we’ve focused on robust management and low operational costs to ensure our resilience through market cycles. Our commitment to green energy, demonstrated by our nearly complete reliance on renewable sources, positions us for sustained profitability post-halving.”

The company improves its renewable mining operations through advanced cooling technologies and strategic partnerships, such as its collaboration with Paraguay’s National Operator or Administración Nacional de Electricidad. “By utilizing natural resources for power and pioneering in cooling solutions, we aim to maintain our competitive edge while setting new industry standards for environmentally responsible mining,” Morphey concludes.

Is Leadership an Art or a Science

Gmail and youtube hackers bypass google’s 2fa account security, apple confirms innovative iphone 16 pro upgrade.

Tether has also ventured into bitcoin mining and aims to leverage its expertise to enhance the network's sustainability, marking a move towards eco-friendly mining practices. Ardoino highlights Tether’s commitment to sustainability: “We’re investing in renewable energy sources like wind, solar, and hydro to power our mining operations. This aligns with our environmental goals and ensures long-term profitability and resilience.” Tether’s initiative reflects a broader industry trend towards mining bitcoin using wasted or stranded energy.

The bitcoin halving occurs about every four years.

They have a proactive approach for the bitcoin halving, reinforcing its commitment to sustainable mining practices and long-term viability. Ardoino told me, “Our development of the Moria platform—an optimization tool for mining operations—exemplifies our approach. Moria enables us to efficiently manage and scale our operations by providing a unified interface for monitoring and predictive analysis, ensuring our mining endeavors remain profitable in the face of reduced block rewards. This strategic emphasis on sustainability and technological innovation underscores Tether’s preparation for the halving, aiming to maintain operational efficiency and profitability while fostering environmental responsibility.”

Armstrong of Cathedra brings a strategic operational focus to the conversation. “Bitcoin BTC mining is a brutal form of commodity production,” he remarked, emphasizing the necessity of operational excellence and efficiency. Cathedra’s strategy involves fine-tuning mining operations to remain profitable post-halving, leveraging cutting edge-tech to optimize energy consumption and cost.

Pacchia, with his expertise in both bitcoin mining and law, emphasizes the need for a comprehensive approach. With his dual hats as a bitcoin mining advisor and a former derivatives lawyer, Pacchia stresses the importance of readiness for the halving. “It’s not just about technology but also about understanding the market dynamics and regulatory environment,” he notes.

Bitcoin memorabilia at Pubkey Bar in New York.

While mining is the main focus, PubKey —a bitcoin cultural center in New York’s Greenwich Village, co-founded by Pacchia—serves as a community hub. As a venue that hosts events and fosters discussions around bitcoin, PubKey serves as a bridge between the technological and cultural aspects of bitcoin. “Our mission is to make bitcoin accessible and fun, serving as a platform for education and community building,” Pacchia explains, highlighting the interconnectedness of mining practices and the broader ecosystem.

As the halving approaches, the strategies employed by these leaders illustrate the sector’s adaptive and forward-thinking nature. The emphasis on sustainability, efficiency and community engagement points to a maturing industry reacting to immediate challenges and shaping the future of bitcoin mining. While this event requires adjustments, it also offers opportunities for innovation and growth.

The industry demonstrates resilience and adaptability from BitFarms’ sustainable practices to Tether’s renewable energy investments, Cathedra’s operational strategies, and PubKey’s community and educational focus. As miners navigate the economic and operational shifts brought by the halving, their efforts underscore a commitment to sustainability, efficiency and community. This triad will define the next chapter in bitcoin’s ongoing evolution.
