We’ve all heard the statistics about how hard it is to make it as an artist: only 17% of artists earn their living exclusively from selling art , there is high competition for art jobs, and the cost of art school can be prohibitive. But we don’t think those statistics accurately reflect the opportunities that exist today. The art industry is thriving and is a great place for dedicated, creative people to find meaningful work.

We’re here to help you navigate this sometimes difficult road from aspiring artist to successful professional. Not all artists are cut from the same mold and there are many different paths that can lead to rewarding careers depending on your personal interests, talents, and skills.

Art Careers List

Art is an expansive field with many sub-categories, each with its own unique demands and opportunities. Some artists are better suited to traditional fine art methods while others thrive in digital or graphic arts; some find fulfillment primarily as teachers, educators, curators, writers, producers, etc. Still, others prefer careers primarily behind the scenes in administrative positions. Below is a list of some of the most popular careers in art. 

Popular Careers

3D Animator

A 3D animator interprets 2D drawings and renders them in 3D. They use a wide variety of custom computer graphics software to create 3D animations, simulations, digital effects, and pre-rendered scenes. They may work for a game development company, animation studio, or other organization that uses 3D graphics extensively.

An actor is someone who portrays a character in a performance. They can be formally trained in acting and are usually paid to do so professionally. Actors generally work in front of a live audience, and are trained to use body language, gestures, and voice as well as to memorize detailed scripts.

Fashion Designer

A fashion designer creates clothing, accessories, and other wearable art. They use their skill, creativity, and imagination to develop new trends and styles. Fashion designers are experts in design, marketing, merchandising, production, and sales. Fashion designers often design accessories like shoes and jewelry, as well.

Graphic Designer

Industrial Designer

Landscape Architect

Naval Architect

Art Professor

Art Teacher

A talent agent is a person who is employed in the entertainment industry to help their clients find work through various methods. Airbrush Artist

An airbrush artist is an artist that uses an airbrush to apply paint to a surface. A courtroom sketch artist is an artist responsible for drawing, either by hand or digitally, sketches of court participants. These rough sketches are used to create an accurate representation of the court that is often included in news reports about the trial. Most courtroom sketch artists work regularly for a news organization.

Craft Artist

A craft artist creates artwork using a variety of materials and traditional skills. Craft art can be commercial or non-commercial which means that the artist earns a living from creating and selling their work to the public or they do it for leisure. Some craft artists are self-taught, but others will attend college to learn their craft.

Floral Designer

A floral designer is an artist who specializes in the creative application of flowers to the design of spaces, with an emphasis on aesthetic and emotional responses. A floral designer may specialize in one or more areas such as event design or high-end luxury residential apartment designs.

Found Artist

A found artist is someone who “discovers” abandoned, overlooked, or forgotten objects and makes them into art. They see the beauty in the mundane and they are able to make it into something that is both beautiful and significant. Found artists find beauty in things that other people would see as useless.

Glassblower

A glassblower is someone who specializes in the production of items made of glass by forming molten glass into vessels and other shapes. The molten glass is formed by either blowing air into a furnace where the raw material is heated or pouring a ladleful of liquid glass from a furnace pot onto an iron pontil.

Graffiti Artist

Graffiti artists are artists who use graffiti and street art to express themselves. Graffiti has evolved into a legitimate art form in the last few years, with a growing number of galleries showing and selling traditional graffiti art and hosting graffiti exhibits and shows for audiences around the world.

Ice Sculptor

Metal Fabricator

Mosaic Artist

Pastry Chef

Digital artists use a wide range of computer software to create graphics, animation, and special effects for websites, videos, computer games, and other electronic media. They come from a variety of backgrounds in Art & Design fields such as illustration, graphic design, painting, photography, animation, video production, and music.

The demand for digital artists is growing exponentially as the world continues to become more technology-driven. Digital art is now being incorporated into web design, graphic design, motion graphics, product design, video games, and much more.

A 3D modeler is a professional that digitally produces 3-dimensional models used for computer graphics and CAD. Three-dimensional models are used in computer graphic design work, prototyping, animation, engineering, interior design, and many other fields.

Book Cover Artist

A book cover artist is a professional graphic designer who creates cover art for books about literature, fiction, or non-fiction. Because there is a high amount of detail and variety in these covers, book cover artists must use their skills to convey the complexity of a book’s content.

Book Illustrator

A book illustrator is someone who creates pictures for books. The illustrator may depict characters, scenery, and other features that the author may have planned out in the storyline. To be successful at the job, one should have artistic talent as well as proper training.

Cartoon Artist

A visual effects artist is a creative person who specializes in the design, development, implementation, and execution of special effects within motion pictures, television programs, and video games. Visual effects artists come from all disciplines including such fields as film, production design, and computer graphics.

Drama & Theater Careers

If you dream of a life in the theater, there are many career options available to help make that happen. From acting and directing to stagehands and set designers, there is a diverse range of jobs available to those dedicated to the arts. Casting Director

A casting director is a professional who is responsible for casting actors in a film, television production, stage performance, or advertisement. The casting director also oversees the other aspects of the production. Casting directors are often asked to audition talent for the roles needed in a production.

A playwright is an author who writes plays for theatre productions. The word “play” derives from the Latin word “pilus” meaning “long performance. They occasionally have other tasks as well, such as staging and working with actors or directors on creative aspects of the production.

Screenwriter

A screenwriter is a person who writes scripts or screenplays for a film or television show. Screenwriters are hired by production companies to write the story and dialogue for what will be used in a film and create an outline of what the plot should look like. Actors then perform the scenes that the screenwriter has written.

Set Designer

A set designer is a professional who designs the staging of a space for theatrical use. They also serve as integral members of set building departments on productions and will consult with other designers, stagehands, and managers during production in order to properly design sets.

Theater Director

A theater director is an individual who oversees the performances and production of theatrical productions. Their main responsibility is to tell the actors what they should say, how they should say it, where they should be standing on stage, when they should move from one place on stage to another, and so forth.

Fashion Careers

The fashion industry is a vast, exciting place to work. It includes everything from the clothing that people wear, down to the stitching of each thread. And while most people know that it takes designers and models to make the world of fashion possible, there are many different types of careers in this field that require different backgrounds and skillsets.

A fashion merchandiser is a person who manages the manufacture and sale of apparel. They are in charge of sourcing, approving, manufacturing, distributing, and pricing their products. Fashion merchandisers typically work for clothing manufacturers or retailers seeking to increase their market share.

Fashion Model

A fashion model is a professional who is employed to model the clothes of different fashion designers in live runway shows, in print ads, or in advertising campaigns. Fashion models generally work for an agency or a modeling company and may be seen at fashion shows, in advertisements, editorial features, and magazine covers.

Jewelry Designer

A jewelry designer is a person who designs pieces of jewelry, often including precious materials like gold, silver, and diamonds. Jewelry designers may work in production of pieces for fashion designers to sell in their showrooms or off the rack, or directly with customers to create custom-made pieces.

Needleworker

A needleworker is somebody who makes needlepoint, cross-stitch, or other sewing projects on a needle and thread. A needleworker makes designs by pulling the thread through small pieces of fabric called stitches. They use this technique to make their own personal art as well as beautiful original products for family or friends.

Pattern Maker

A pattern maker is a person who creates templates or patterns for garments, textiles, or other types of products. The pattern maker works with designers, garment manufacturers, or other clients to create accurate patterns that can be used for mass production or customization.

Shoe Designer

A shoe designer is a professional who designs footwear. Shoe designers are often employed by footwear manufacturers to create shoes for retail markets. Shoe Designers may also work independently as consultants or work in conjunction with fashion designers.

A tailor is a person whose job is to make, alter, repair, or otherwise improve clothing. In modern times the term can also refer to a shop that does this work. A tailor can be referred to as someone who makes clothes with needle and thread. Other names for a tailor include shirtmaker and clothier.

Film and Television

Film industry professionals include actors, directors, producers, camera operators, editors, animators, and even video game designers. There are many types of careers in the film industry, each requiring varying degrees of education and training. And while most people know that it takes actors and directors to make the world of film, there are many occupations behind the scenes that help make the industry run.

Cinematographer

A cinematographer is a member of the film industry responsible for the photographic aspect of filmmaking. The cinematographer works with directors and producers in executing motion pictures. They use lighting techniques, camera placement, and other aspects of production design to achieve the director’s artistic vision.

Film Director

A film director is a person who directs the making of a film. The director usually oversees all aspects of film production, including acting, cinematography and editing. In Hollywood the director will oversee the entire filmmaking process from beginning to end in collaboration with their cast and crew.

Film Editor

A film editor is in charge of the assembly of a film. There are more steps to editing a film than you might imagine. They might include adding sound effects or music, making sure that dialogue matches correctly with visuals, manipulating colors to create moods, or deciding which areas should have color altered for dramatic emphasis.

Video Editor

A video editor is someone who is specifically tasked with cutting-up and rearranging video clips, typically for the purpose of creating a film. This editors’ responsibilities may also include color correction, combining soundtracks, and adding special effects such as titles and credits to videos.

Music Careers

Audio Engineer

An audio engineer has the task of recording, editing, and mixing sound signals for an audio or video. These people have the technical knowledge and expertise to manipulate sounds so that they will be heard at desirable levels in various environments such as theater, broadcast studios, and home surround sound systems.

Disc Jockey

A disc jockey selects and plays a particular type of music for an event, party, or gathering. They typically have a set list of songs which they mix using specialist software on turntables to provide seamless transitions from one track to another. They are also responsible for the sound quality and atmosphere of an event.

Foley Artist

A foley artist is someone who creates sounds for film, television, video games, theatre, and other multimedia. Foley sound effects are created by performing the actions, which includes modifying and adding sounds to existing material, or creating additional sound effects from scratch.

Music Composer

A music composer is a professional who composes and writes music. To compose music is to produce original music that has not already been performed or recorded by someone else. Music composition encompasses a broad range of musical styles and techniques, with composers working in a wide variety of musical genres.

A musician is someone who plays or sings music. They may play one or more musical instruments, sing, chant, conduct other musicians, or compose. The term “musician” can refer to a person who plays any type of instrument as well as someone who sings or conducts and is often used in the context of popular music.

Sound Effect Artist

A sound effect artist creates sound effects and other sound elements for filmmaking, television, radio, advertising, video games, and more. Sound artists are usually employed to provide audio for films or TV shows as the sound designer. They may also be employed in recording studios or post-production houses.

Voice Over Artist

A voice over artist (also known as a voice actor) is an actor who reads or narrates the script of a voice over recording. Voice actors are used in advertising, animation, documentaries, educational documentaries, filmmaking, and video games. Quite often voice actors are also screen actors who have expertise in using their voices to perform dialogue.

Performing Arts Careers

A comedian is someone who makes a living by telling jokes, stories, riddles, and other humorous anecdotes or comments. Some comedians do not tell jokes but instead recite stories of everyday life in a humorous manner. A comedian could also take on roles such as a radio or television personality.

A dancer is someone who practices movement in rhythm with music. This may take the form of ballet, folk dance, tap dance, jazz dance, or even martial arts. Dancers may also specialize in a particular dance style as well. Regardless of the type of dance they do, all dancers use their bodies to express themselves through movement.

Opera Singer

An opera singer is a person who uses their voice to perform opera music, which may be accompanied by an orchestra or chorus. Performers often wear elaborate costumes and makeup and use dramatic gestures to sing onstage. They often specialize in different genres and must have exceptional vocal control and a wide range.

A singer is someone who sings or performs. Singers primarily create vocal music intended to be sung by humans, either as an independent activity or as part of a musical ensemble. They can sing without instrumental accompaniment in classical styles or popular music genres such as pop, rock, or R&B.

Ventriloquist

A ventriloquist is an entertainer who manipulates a dummy (called a “ventriloquist’s doll”) or other objects to make it appear that the voice is coming from the dummy’s mouth. Ventriloquists are generally known to be skilled in throwing their voices in a way that makes them sound like they’re coming out of the mouth of their doll.

A career in photography can lead to a diversity of career paths. Learning how to take the best photos and ways to improve them is only one part of the job. Between getting to the right place at the right time, organizing your equipment, and promoting yourself as a photographer, there’s quite a lot that goes into becoming successful in this field.

Advertising Photographer

Advertising photography is the use of still or moving images in a marketing campaign for products or services. It is a smart and effective way to generate interest in what you are selling or to influence consumers buying decisions. The most common forms of advertising photography include social media, TV, and print ads.

Aerial Photography

An aerial photographer uses a high-powered camera to capture images via remote-controlled unmanned aircraft. Aerial photography is a great way to get an aerial view of a location, such as an event (like a wedding or concert) or a natural disaster. Aerial photography is frequently used in areas that are hard to reach on foot.

Celebrity Photographer

A celebrity photographer is a professional who takes pictures of famous people. Their clients may be actors, musicians, models, athletes, or other public figures. Celebrity photographers usually work in one of two ways: for an agency that supplies photographs to magazines and newspapers; or on their own as independent contractors who sell images directly to advertisers, writers, or media outlets.

Commercial Photographer

Commercial photography is a genre that focuses on creating high-quality images for the purpose of promoting and selling products or services.

Fashion Photographer

The Moscow Metro Museum of Art: 10 Must-See Stations

There are few times one can claim having been on the subway all afternoon and loving it, but the Moscow Metro provides just that opportunity.  While many cities boast famous public transport systems—New York’s subway, London’s underground, San Salvador’s chicken buses—few warrant hours of exploration.  Moscow is different: Take one ride on the Metro, and you’ll find out that this network of railways can be so much more than point A to B drudgery.

The Metro began operating in 1935 with just thirteen stations, covering less than seven miles, but it has since grown into the world’s third busiest transit system ( Tokyo is first ), spanning about 200 miles and offering over 180 stops along the way.  The construction of the Metro began under Joseph Stalin’s command, and being one of the USSR’s most ambitious building projects, the iron-fisted leader instructed designers to create a place full of svet (radiance) and svetloe budushchee (a radiant future), a palace for the people and a tribute to the Mother nation.

Consequently, the Metro is among the most memorable attractions in Moscow.  The stations provide a unique collection of public art, comparable to anything the city’s galleries have to offer and providing a sense of the Soviet era, which is absent from the State National History Museum.  Even better, touring the Metro delivers palpable, experiential moments, which many of us don’t get standing in front of painting or a case of coins.

Though tours are available , discovering the Moscow Metro on your own provides a much more comprehensive, truer experience, something much less sterile than following a guide.  What better place is there to see the “real” Moscow than on mass transit: A few hours will expose you to characters and caricatures you’ll be hard-pressed to find dining near the Bolshoi Theater.  You become part of the attraction, hear it in the screech of the train, feel it as hurried commuters brush by: The Metro sucks you beneath the city and churns you into the mix.

With the recommendations of our born-and-bred Muscovite students, my wife Emma and I have just taken a self-guided tour of what some locals consider the top ten stations of the Moscow Metro. What most satisfied me about our Metro tour was the sense of adventure .  I loved following our route on the maps of the wagon walls as we circled the city, plotting out the course to the subsequent stops; having the weird sensation of being underground for nearly four hours; and discovering the next cavern of treasures, playing Indiana Jones for the afternoon, piecing together fragments of Russia’s mysterious history.  It’s the ultimate interactive museum.

Top Ten Stations (In order of appearance)

Kievskaya station.

Kievskaya Station went public in March of 1937, the rails between it and Park Kultury Station being the first to cross the Moscow River.  Kievskaya is full of mosaics depicting aristocratic scenes of Russian life, with great cameo appearances by Lenin, Trotsky, and Stalin.  Each work has a Cyrillic title/explanation etched in the marble beneath it; however, if your Russian is rusty, you can just appreciate seeing familiar revolutionary dates like 1905 ( the Russian Revolution ) and 1917 ( the October Revolution ).

Mayakovskaya Station

Mayakovskaya Station ranks in my top three most notable Metro stations. Mayakovskaya just feels right, done Art Deco but no sense of gaudiness or pretention.  The arches are adorned with rounded chrome piping and create feeling of being in a jukebox, but the roof’s expansive mosaics of the sky are the real showstopper.  Subjects cleverly range from looking up at a high jumper, workers atop a building, spires of Orthodox cathedrals, to nimble aircraft humming by, a fleet of prop planes spelling out CCCP in the bluest of skies.

Novoslobodskaya Station

Novoslobodskaya is the Metro’s unique stained glass station.  Each column has its own distinctive panels of colorful glass, most of them with a floral theme, some of them capturing the odd sailor, musician, artist, gardener, or stenographer in action.  The glass is framed in Art Deco metalwork, and there is the lovely aspect of discovering panels in the less frequented haunches of the hall (on the trackside, between the incoming staircases).  Novosblod is, I’ve been told, the favorite amongst out-of-town visitors.

Komsomolskaya Station

Komsomolskaya Station is one of palatial grandeur.  It seems both magnificent and obligatory, like the presidential palace of a colonial city.  The yellow ceiling has leafy, white concrete garland and a series of golden military mosaics accenting the tile mosaics of glorified Russian life.  Switching lines here, the hallway has an Alice-in-Wonderland feel, impossibly long with decorative tile walls, culminating in a very old station left in a remarkable state of disrepair, offering a really tangible glimpse behind the palace walls.

Dostoevskaya Station

Dostoevskaya is a tribute to the late, great hero of Russian literature .  The station at first glance seems bare and unimpressive, a stark marble platform without a whiff of reassembled chips of tile.  However, two columns have eerie stone inlay collages of scenes from Dostoevsky’s work, including The Idiot , The Brothers Karamazov , and Crime and Punishment.   Then, standing at the center of the platform, the marble creates a kaleidoscope of reflections.  At the entrance, there is a large, inlay portrait of the author.

Chkalovskaya Station

Chkalovskaya does space Art Deco style (yet again).  Chrome borders all.  Passageways with curvy overhangs create the illusion of walking through the belly of a chic, new-age spacecraft.  There are two (kos)mosaics, one at each end, with planetary subjects.  Transferring here brings you above ground, where some rather elaborate metalwork is on display.  By name similarity only, I’d expected Komsolskaya Station to deliver some kosmonaut décor; instead, it was Chkalovskaya that took us up to the space station.

Elektrozavodskaya Station

Elektrozavodskaya is full of marble reliefs of workers, men and women, laboring through the different stages of industry.  The superhuman figures are round with muscles, Hollywood fit, and seemingly undeterred by each Herculean task they respectively perform.  The station is chocked with brass, from hammer and sickle light fixtures to beautiful, angular framework up the innards of the columns.  The station’s art pieces are less clever or extravagant than others, but identifying the different stages of industry is entertaining.

Baumanskaya Statio

Baumanskaya Station is the only stop that wasn’t suggested by the students.  Pulling in, the network of statues was just too enticing: Out of half-circle depressions in the platform’s columns, the USSR’s proud and powerful labor force again flaunts its success.  Pilots, blacksmiths, politicians, and artists have all congregated, posing amongst more Art Deco framing.  At the far end, a massive Soviet flag dons the face of Lenin and banners for ’05, ’17, and ‘45.  Standing in front of the flag, you can play with the echoing roof.

Ploshchad Revolutsii Station

Novokuznetskaya Station

Novokuznetskaya Station finishes off this tour, more or less, where it started: beautiful mosaics.  This station recalls the skyward-facing pieces from Mayakovskaya (Station #2), only with a little larger pictures in a more cramped, very trafficked area.  Due to a line of street lamps in the center of the platform, it has the atmosphere of a bustling market.  The more inventive sky scenes include a man on a ladder, women picking fruit, and a tank-dozer being craned in.  The station’s also has a handsome black-and-white stone mural.

Here is a map and a brief description of our route:

Start at (1)Kievskaya on the “ring line” (look for the squares at the bottom of the platform signs to help you navigate—the ring line is #5, brown line) and go north to Belorusskaya, make a quick switch to the Dark Green/#2 line, and go south one stop to (2)Mayakovskaya.  Backtrack to the ring line—Brown/#5—and continue north, getting off at (3)Novosblodskaya and (4)Komsolskaya.  At Komsolskaya Station, transfer to the Red/#1 line, go south for two stops to Chistye Prudy, and get on the Light Green/#10 line going north.  Take a look at (5)Dostoevskaya Station on the northern segment of Light Green/#10 line then change directions and head south to (6)Chkalovskaya, which offers a transfer to the Dark Blue/#3 line, going west, away from the city center.  Have a look (7)Elektroskaya Station before backtracking into the center of Moscow, stopping off at (8)Baumskaya, getting off the Dark Blue/#3 line at (9)Ploschad Revolyutsii.  Change to the Dark Green/#2 line and go south one stop to see (10)Novokuznetskaya Station.

Multivolume Work

Articles in periodicals.

APA style dictates that authors are named with their last name followed by their initials; publication year goes between parentheses, followed by a period. The title of the article is in sentence-case, meaning only the first word and proper nouns in the title are capitalized. The periodical title is run in title case, and is followed by the volume number which, with the title, is also italicized. If a DOI has been assigned to the article that you are using, you should include this after the page numbers for the article. If no DOI has been assigned and you are accessing the periodical online, use the URL of the website from which you are retrieving the periodical.

Note: APA 7 advises writers to include a DOI (if available), even when using the print source. The example above assumes no DOI is available.

Zambia visit shows SSW’s global impact

A UNC School of Social Work delegation saw how their research helped a nonprofit create jobs in rural areas.

A small delegation from the UNC School of Social Work visited the growing rural town of Solwezi (population 90,000) in the North-Western Province of Zambia in March. They came to learn about the impact of local women’s savings and credit groups and their financial literacy training.

The trip was coordinated by Gina Chowa and Rain Masa from the school’s center for  Global Social Development Innovations in partnership with longtime collaborator Mathias Zimba, executive director of  Rising Fountains Development Program in Zambia.

“As partners, we work together to identify ideas and practices that will change lives for the better,” Masa said. “Researchers and graduate students at the school can help build the evidence needed to demonstrate to policymakers, officials and the business community what is needed to  improve the lives of rural Zambians .”

Improving lives in six countries

Masa is an associate professor who also serves as GSDI’s research director. He has worked collaboratively on both economic security and HIV treatment projects with Rising Fountains, a Zambian nonprofit dedicated to improving the livelihoods of women and children in rural areas.

Masa emphasized how community involvement localizes these economic programs and increases their chance of success and relevance.

“Economic security is the focal point of our work,” said Masa. “We provide funding and, maybe more importantly, we are available to Mathias and his team for ongoing capacity support as well.”

Paving career paths

During the visit to her native Zambia, Chowa was visibly moved at the end of a day spent at a teen center and a church. The delegation heard from over a dozen enthusiastic groups of about 20 women each and the men who had joined in support of them.

“These people. This is why I do the work I do,” Chowa said.

Following the presentations, the delegation went to see the small business owners in action. These included a man who bought spare parts for just one bicycle and now runs a repair shop with several assistants, craftswomen who purchased a sewing machine and yarn to create and sell clothing, and a woman who uses a mobile phone and SIM cards to help townspeople make financial transactions.

“This is not about politics,” said one Solwezi community leader. “I stand in the middle in support of our people helping better their lives and those of their families.”

At the end of the visit, local residents piled baskets full of sweet melons, gourds and pineapples at the front of a small church as parting gifts.

“The bounty and generosity of spirit of the nearly 150 people of Solwezi whom we visited with earlier this month made a lasting impression,” said Alice Washington, a longtime member of the school’s advisory board.

White-sounding names get called back for jobs more than Black ones, a new study finds

Twenty years ago, two economists responded to a slew of help-wanted ads in Boston and Chicago newspapers using a set of fictitious names to test for racial bias in the job market.

The watershed study found that applicants with names suggesting they were white got 50% more callbacks from employers than those whose names indicated they were Black.

Researchers at the University of California, Berkeley and the University of Chicago recently took that premise and expanded on it, filing 83,000 fake job applications for 11,000 entry-level positions at a variety of Fortune 500 companies.

Their working paper , published this month and titled "A Discrimination Report Card," found that the typical employer called back the presumably white applicants around 9% more than Black ones. That number rose to roughly 24% for the worst offenders.

The research team initially conducted its experiment in 2021, but their new paper names the 97 companies they included in the study and assigns them grades representing their level of bias, thanks to a new methodology the researchers developed.

"Putting the names out there in the public domain is to move away from a lot of the performative allyship that you see with these companies, saying, 'Oh, we value inclusivity and diversity,'" said Pat Kline, a University of California, Berkeley economics professor who worked on the study. "We're trying to create kind of an objective ground truth here."

America Reckons With Racial Injustice

From jobs to homeownership, protests put spotlight on racial economic divide.

The names that researchers tested include some used in the 2004 study as well as others culled from a database of speeding tickets in North Carolina. A name was classified as "racially distinctive" if more than 90% of people with that name shared the same race.

Applicants with names such as Brad and Greg were up against Darnell and Lamar. Amanda and Kristen competed for jobs with Ebony and Latoya.

What the researchers found was that some firms called back Black applicants considerably less, while race played little to no factor in the hiring processes at other firms.

Dorianne St Fleur, a career coach and workplace consultant, said she wasn't surprised by the findings showing fewer callbacks for presumed Black applicants at some companies.

"I know the study focused on entry-level positions. Unfortunately it doesn't stop there. I've seen it throughout the organization all the way up into the C-suite," she said.

St Fleur, who primarily coaches women of color, said many of her clients have the right credentials and experience for certain jobs but aren't being hired.

"They are sending out dozens, hundreds of resumes and receiving nothing back," she said.

What the researchers found

Much of a company's bias in hiring could be explained by its industry, the study found. Auto dealers and retailers of car parts were the least likely to call back Black applicants, with Genuine Auto Parts (which distributes NAPA products) and the used car retailer AutoNation scoring the worst on the study's "discrimination report card."

"We are always evaluating our practices to ensure inclusivity and break down barriers, and we will continue to do so," Heather Ross, vice president of strategic communications at Genuine Parts Company, said in an email.

AutoNation did not reply to a request for comment.

The companies that performed best in the analysis included Charter/Spectrum, Dr. Pepper, Kroger and Avis-Budget.

Workplace Diversity Goes Far Past Hiring. How Leaders Can Support Employees Of Color

Several patterns emerged when the researchers looked at the companies that had the lowest "contact gap" between white and Black applicants

Federal contractors and more profitable companies called back applicants from the two racial groups at more similar rates. Firms with more centralized human resources departments and policies also exhibited less racial bias, which Kline says may indicate that a standardized hiring workflow involving multiple employees could help reduce discrimination.

When it came to the sex of applicants, most companies didn't discriminate when calling back job-seekers.

Still, some firms preferred one sex over another in screening applicants. Manufacturing companies called back people with male names at higher rates, and clothing stores showing a bias toward female applicants.

What can workplaces — and workers — do

Kline said the research team hoped the public would focus as much on companies doing a bad job as those doing a good one, since they have potentially found ways to remove or limit racial bias from the hiring process.

"Even if it's true, from these insights in psychology and behavioral economics, that individuals are inevitably going to carry biases along with them, it's not automatic that those individual biases will translate into organizational biases, on average," he said.

St Fleur said there are several strategies companies can use to cut down on bias in the hiring process, including training staff and involving multiple recruiters in callback decisions.

Companies should also collect data about which candidates make it through the hiring process and consider standardizing or anonymizing that process, she added.

St Fleur also said she often tells her job-seeking clients that it's not their fault that they aren't getting called back for open positions they believe they're qualified for.

"The fact that you're not getting callbacks does not mean you suck, you're not a good worker, you don't deserve this thing," she said. "It's just the nature of the systemic forces at play, and this is what we have to deal with."

Still, she said job candidates facing bias in the hiring process can lean on their network for new opportunities, prioritize inclusive companies when applying for work and even consider switching industries or locations.

New Migrants Get Work Permits. Other Undocumented Immigrants Want Them, Too.

Long-term undocumented immigrants — and their employers — are feeling left out by Biden administration policies allowing most who just crossed the border to work legally.

Sam Sanchez, a Chicago restaurateur, was incensed when President Biden announced last September that his administration would extend work eligibility to nearly half a million Venezuelans, many of them migrants who had recently crossed the border illegally.

What about his undocumented employees like Ruben, a Mexican father of two U.S.-born children who has been in the United States since 1987, and Juan, another Mexican worker, who has trained dozens of new hires at Moe’s Cantina?

“It’s offensive that my employees and other immigrants are being leapfrogged by new arrivals,” said Mr. Sanchez, who is on the board of the National Restaurant Association.

Having built lives and families since entering the country unlawfully many years ago, they have been waiting for Congress to give them a path to work legally. “For those of us here a long time trying to do everything right, it’s just not fair that we are forgotten,” said Juan, 53, whose last name was withheld out of concern about his immigration status.

Confronted with an influx of migrants making their way to Chicago, New York and other big cities, Mr. Biden has used executive power to allow several hundred thousand of them to live and work temporarily in the United States in an effort to make them less reliant on shelters and other assistance.

Now groups representing undocumented immigrants and their U.S.-citizen children — as well as their employers — are urging the president to deploy the same broad power to open channels for the more than eight million living in the United States who are barred from legal employment.

“If President Biden can grant work permits to new arrivals, he can do it for people picking our crops, emptying bedpans and cleaning hotel rooms for more than 10 years,” said Rebecca Shi, executive director of the American Business Immigration Coalition, whose 1,400 members include business associations and company executives.

Business leaders have lobbied Republicans and Democrats on Capitol Hill for decades to overhaul the broken immigration system and address their labor needs. But the calls have gone nowhere in an increasingly polarized Congress.

At a rally in Chicago last month, demonstrators urged the Biden administration to allow undocumented immigrants to work legally. And in Las Vegas, Nevada’s governor, a Republican, and the state’s U.S. senators, both Democrats, joined employers, unions and immigrant advocates to send the same message.

The business coalition, in a letter to the president signed by more than 300 employers and trade associations, urged “immediate action” to extend work authorization to long-term undocumented people. In particular, Ms. Shi said, the president should prioritize work permits for those without legal status: more than one million undocumented spouses of U.S. citizens, 800,000 parents of U.S.-citizen children and 300,000 farm workers.

About three quarters of the 10.5 million undocumented people in the United States as of 2021 were in the labor force, according to the Pew Research Center , an independent think tank. Roughly two million people out of the overall undocumented population have a temporary legal status that makes them eligible to work.

But a sweeping action by the president to allow millions more to work legally could prompt court challenges and political attacks from critics, even as some of those same critics have stymied or undermined the administration’s efforts.

Mr. Biden’s latest proposal — a bill this year to curb unlawful migration — was backed by top Republicans in Congress. But it collapsed after Republican leaders withdrew support, bowing to pressure from former President Donald J. Trump, their party’s presumptive presidential nominee.

The surge in migration to the United States has left Mr. Biden with no easy options. The perception that he is favoring newcomers over longtime undocumented immigrants could hurt him among Latino voters, long a Democratic bloc that has begun to fragment, with an increasing number supporting Republican candidates.

Eduardo Gamarra, a professor at Florida International University who recently polled Latino voters , said that some of them who have settled in the United States may see themselves as having less in common with the new immigrants.

“When you try to say, ‘Why are you supporting these positions?’ they will tell you, one, ‘We don’t like illegals,’ even though they might have been illegal themselves,’” Dr. Gamarra said.

Channels exist for foreigners to immigrate legally to the United States, but they are available primarily to those who have specialized skills or family already in the country.

Meanwhile, international crises have pushed millions of people toward the U.S. border. Haiti, Venezuela, Cuba and Nicaragua have endured years of political and economic turbulence. Over the last year, President Biden has used humanitarian “parole” to allow about 390,000 people from those countries to come to the United States and receive work authorization, provided they have a financial sponsor.

Hundreds of thousands of other Venezuelans who have fled their country have received what is known as Temporary Protected Status, which has helped Venezuelans leave shelters as they receive work permits.

To better manage the flow of migrants, the Biden administration has promoted a smartphone app that since last year has granted parole to those who use it to schedule appointments at the border, creating another way for migrants to obtain work eligibility.

Margaret Stock, an immigration lawyer, said that the president has legal authority to authorize employment for others. “He may be reluctant, but Biden could grant parole and work permits to whoever he wanted,” she said.

A White House spokesman, Angelo Fernández Hernández, responded in general terms when asked about the push for work permits, saying that Congress had failed to consider the president’s 2021 proposal to reform immigration , and that, “the administration is constantly evaluating possible policy options.” Obtaining a work permit opens up a wider range of opportunities and raises immigrant wages by 10 percent on average, research shows .

Those who have lived unlawfully in the United States for decades typically work off the books, or present documents under a fake or stolen name to get hired, which is illegal. It has become more difficult to do that because about half of all states require employers to use an electronic system to detect irregularities.

Business owners like Mr. Sanchez who employ people without valid work documents have become increasingly vocal about the plight of their workers and their struggle filling jobs amid a labor shortage.

And although more seasonal guest worker visas have been issued in recent years for some sectors, like agriculture, employers say that granting work permits to longtime unauthorized immigrants would do more to address the problem.

“We have operations that want to grow,” said Matt Teagarden, chief executive of the Kansas Livestock Association. “Labor is a limiting factor.”

The billions of dollars that undocumented immigrants contribute to public coffers has heightened the sense that Mr. Biden’s recent efforts for newcomers are unfair. According to an analysis of 2021 census data by the American Immigration Council , undocumented workers paid $31 billion in federal, state and local taxes, including into the Social Security system from which they cannot draw retirement benefits.

Eréndira Rendón, whose parents are undocumented Mexicans in their late 60s, has watched mayors press the White House to issue work permits to recently arrived migrants straining municipal resources.

Her mother jarred pickles and her father worked in a slaughterhouse. They put two children through college and bought a home. Because they cannot receive retirement benefits, they depend on their children to help them.

“I wish the mayors were advocating as loudly for undocumented people who have been here all these years,” said Ms. Rendón, 38, who works for a nonprofit in Chicago called the Resurrection Project that helps new migrants complete work permit applications.

For some immigrants, new migrants also create competition for jobs. Although research generally shows that immigrants do not depress wages overall, there can be short-term effects on similar workers.

The dynamic is palpable in New York City at the corners where immigrants hustle for work. Lucia Goyen, director of day laborer programs at Catholic Charities of the Archdiocese of New York, says newcomers will often accept just a few dollars an hour, lowering wages for everyone.

When new arrivals receive work permits, they are free to find a job in the formal economy that is still off limits to many who have been in the city far longer.

”There has been this frustration of, ‘I’ve been here 20-30 years, I have no access to a work permit, but this is a growing list of things that new migrants are getting handed to them,’” Ms. Goyen said.
