how to upload extended essay to managebac

Criterion E (Engagement) is worth 18% of your final mark and will be largely assessed through your reflections on the Reflections in Planning and Progress form, so it is vital to practise this skill.

On this page you will find information on:

  • What is a Researcher's Reflection Space
  • What should I put in my Researcher's Reflection Space
  • Where should I keep my Researcher's Reflection Space
  • Reflections on Planning and Progress Form
  • Saving documents to OneDrive

What is a Researcher's Reflection Space?

how to upload extended essay to managebac

While not a compulsory, assessed element of the EE, the RSS is very important because it will help you to understand and talk about the choices you make and paths you choose. This will not only help you to write reflections for your Reflections on Planning and Progress Form, but will actually support you in developing all the skills and attitudes that you need to become a better inquirer - something which can potentially have a huge impact on the rest of your life.

What should I put in my Researcher's Reflection Space?

Diary

  • A diary or log of your reflections. Remember it is as important (if not more important) to reflect on what is going wrong or proving frustrating and what you plan to do about it, as it is to reflect on your successes.
  • Paperwork you used to help you to make decisions, such as the Using with Subject-Specific Guidelines table, the Supervisor Application Form and the Research Proposal Form , along with notes of any changes of direction you have made and why, and drafts you have made for the Reflections on Planning and Progress Form.
  • Notes from any meetings with your supervisor or conversations with your subject teachers about your EE.
  • A record of emerging questions and new lines of inquiry. Your final question will usually emerge out of your investigation, so it is important to track how it changes as you understand your topic better.
  • A record of the resources you have found to support your inquiry and your thoughts about them - the Annotated Bibliography is excellent for this
  • More detailled notes on individual resources - the Investigative Journal is designed for this. You might also want to annotate copies of aricles (either on paper or on printouts in OneNote for example)
  • A record of search strategies and/or data collection methods you used and how successful they were. The Keyword Record might be helpful here.

There is no fixed way to do this - it is YOUR Researcher's Reflection Space. You might use Mind maps, lists, tables, diagrams or blocks of text. You might want to annotate or highlight documents in different colours, or make separate notes. Find something that works for you - but make sure you keep your notes organised so that they make sense to you!

Discussion

  • How your planning is going
  • What you are learning - about the topic, but more importantly about the process
  • Whether you are on track and how you should proceed

Where should I keep my Researcher's Reflection Space?

The Researchers Reflection Space is YOUR tool for recording your thinking, and you need to do this in a way that works best for you.

You might use:

Notebook

A notebook: while you could use a notebook like a diary to write down your reflections, you are also going to want somewhere to store printed documents relating to your EE, and electronic notes (such as URLs).

Folders

A folder: This is a great way to store all the paperwork relating to your EE, including handwritten notes, forms and printouts of articles. Make sure you use dividers and think carefully about how you organise it though.

But you are likely to want to use at least one online method to store notes too. This will be particularly important when you start the investigate stage of your inquiry and need somewhere to store dowloaded articles and links. You might use:

Folder icon

If you decide to keep your Researchers Reflection Space on a computer's hard drive you MUST take regular back ups. You should never keep it on just a single hard drive or memory stick.

While you can use the school network, you may find this difficult to access during holiday periods and you should NEVER save anything important directly to your desktop on the school network.

OneDrive

OneDrive  is useful If you just want to save a series of documents (one of which might be your Reflective Journal) . It is very similar to using a computer hard drive or memory stick but is cloud based so you can access it from anywhere and it does not need to be backed up.

It is still very important to use a sensible folder structure and filenames so that you can find your documents again.

There are instructions at the bottom of this page for saving documents to OneDrive directly from Office 365, and uploading documents of any type to OneDrive.

OneNote

See graphic below for how to access this.

ManageBac screenshot

Regardless of how you choose to set up your RRS, the most important thing is what you put into it...

  • Introduction to Libguides link:  https://ycis-pudong.libguides.com/c.php?g=949443&p=6882854
  • Find the EE Course Companion and IB EE Guide on the Homepage of this Libguides site:  https://ycis-pudong.libguides.com/c.php?g=949443
  • Look at student Managebac EE webpages: Worksheet, Researchers Reflection Space (RRS), Planning and Progress Form (RPPF)
  • Read a relevant student example of the EE, noting and discussing writing style, research question design, length, formatting etc. Find examples here:  https://ibpublishing.ibo.org/extendedessay/apps/dpapp/assessment.html?doc=d_0_eeyyy_gui_1602_1_e&part=1&chapter=1
  • Prepare for next session: Read subject specific information in the IB's EE Guide (this is on Teams and also here on libguides)
  • Make sure you have looked at your own choice of subject in the Guide's subject-specific information. Pay special attention to the recommendations given for a research question and for research , in your chosen subject area.
  • Go to the EE on Managebac again, this time looking at the Researcher's Reflection Space (RRS).
  • Introduce Selection Form and first deadline, December 1st. Both of these on Managebac>EE>Worksheet tab.
  • Before next session, sit down and brainstorm chosen subject area, topic and supervisor for the EE. Refer to the Selection Form.
  • Read through the Libguides' Tab: Starting research
  • Share Databases tab on Libguides for preliminary research.
  • Note: iPad MB view Vs Computer MB view (make sure you can access the EE tabs). On iPads, go to IB Manager> Extended Essay> Drop down menu for tabs.
  • Selection Form due December 1st.
  • The Selection Form requires you to include 3 relevant academic sources. Make sure to use a RECOMMENDED DATABASE for these sources. TOP TIP: Evaluate all sources referred to in your essay to maximise marks.
  • Send me the name of your preferred supervisor. How to approach a teacher to ask to supervise your EE.
  • Recommended databases include: Statista, Jstor and others found on the Databases tab on this Libguides site.
  • You also need to specify your chosen subject, topic, preliminary research question, as well as your supervisor. Discuss:  How to approach your potential supervisor.
  • To submit your Selection Form , go to the bottom of the Worksheet tab on Managebac for the EE, and upload the document.
  • Read through the information under the tab Starting Research .
  • Look at the information under the tab Research Questions , on Libguides
  • Next session: Your RRS should be updated regularly. Ensure that you have a post on your preliminary reading and links to relevant resources. Teachers approached regarding EE supervision.

1. December 1 Deadline: Selection Form discussed and signed by supervisor, uploaded onto Managebac Worksheet. Before completing the form:

  • Read through subject-specific information in the EE Guide
  • Read through Research Questions PPT on Libguides
  • Be familiar with recommended databases on Libguides

2. Introduction to the marking criteria

Activity: Fill-in a blank mark sheet based on an EE in your subject area. Upload the completed sheet (photo or scanned image) onto your RRS on Managebac.

Note: Selection Form due next Friday, Dec 1. Approach your supervisor to ask what day/time suits them to set-up a regular meeting every two weeks. Before winter break, go through the EE contract together and sign.

1. Where we left off: Read and mark an EE in your subject area. Vital you are familiar with expectations of an EE, especially in contrast with an IA. Next meeting with your supervisor, talk about this. Revise the criteria A-E for the extended essay; scan through an essay example and assess together. Then, read through the examiner's comments and marks.

2.  Selection Form completed, signed by your supervisor and uploaded at the bottom of your EE Worksheet on Managebac by December 1st. Take time to work on this now. For sources, write the author and/or title and the where you accessed the information (e.g. JSTOR etc)

3. Students who have already completed their form, make sure it is uploaded. Then begin a literature review into your topic area. That is, research into what studies and information already exists on your intended topic. Identify the relevant sources by posting their title/author/where available on your RRS (Researchers Reflection Space) on Managebac.

  • Your RRS should be updated weekly (with posts re: relevant sources. Make sure to include the link to the source, a short summary and a comment on how it may relate to your research).
  • You should be setting-up a regular two weekly check-in time with your supervisor.
  • Be sure to discuss the difference between an IA and the EE in your chosen subject area.

[While students are either working on their selection form or literature review, have a quick one to one re: research questions]

 Session 5

Expectations: Regularly updating RRS ; regular meeting scheduled with supervisor every 2 weeks

January 31 Deadline: Confirm your RQ on Managebac

March 29 Deadline: PPT outline

1. Research questions, see information about title and research question , on Philpot Education

2. Essay outline, see Essay Outline tab on the Libguide

3. Research: choice of sources crucial. See Research: How it is assessed and  Annotated Bibliography  on Philpot Education. See Evaluation of Sources , on the Libguide

Semester 2, Session 1

  • 2-3 students interested in library organisation as a CAS activity, send me a message
  • A brief check-in meeting with your supervisor is required every two weeks. Arrange now, if have not already. Need to refine and confirm Research Questions with your supervisor by January 31

DEADLINES- Look at the calendar

HOW TO UPDATE EE PROPOSALS ON Managebac

REVISING RQs- Look at Philpot site:  https://philpot.education/mod/page/view.php?id=443

PPT OUTLINE BY MARCH 31- Look at Structure and Outline tab on this Libguide; Download the PPT

GO FURTHER: HOW TO DEMONSTRATE CRITICAL THINKING IN YOUR EE:

1. Selection of quality, relevant sources ESSENTIAL!!

2. Signpost analysis of these sources with appropriate, academic language

3. Data analysis (again, discuss with your supervisor how an EE is different to an IA paper, e.g. high-level research and analysis, not strictly confined to curriculum studied)

  • Spend time  to LOCATE quality, relevant sources
  • READ, TAKE NOTES, FORM an argument/angle, TRACK on MB
  • MEET WITH YOUR SUPERVISOR WITH THESE IDEAS

Semester 2, Session 2

  • Next  deadline March 29: PPT outline and first reflection (meeting and 150 words)
  • Locating sources: Databases Tab (a search engine is not a source!) and updating RRS (with a summary and link to your RQ, not simply pasting a URL)

1. Think about the PPT outline as a logical sequence of your essay's main points. Look at graphic organiser on p77 Course Companion.

Your PPT outline is not to be a general collection of related points. Instead, the logical order of your main

points will give your essay an effective structure and will be an immense help to you as you begin writing the

     body of your essay.

For science essays, your experiment description may take up a significant part of your body, but at

least one third should be set-aside for  evaluation of the process and results.

3. Look at an EE example to deduce its structure (main points/headings)

4. Students to locate a successful EE example in their chosen subject area and to note down its logical structure of main points and headings.

BETWEEN NOW AND NEXT SESSION: Work on your PPT Outline. Consult with your supervisor about your main sections and then possible headings throughout. For each heading, identify a key source to verify the information you are providing.

  • Research questions to be updated as a proposal on your Worksheet/Managebac (and confirmed by your supervisor)
  • Revise recommended databases (and use of Boolean logic to search)
  • Look at updated Researcher's Reflection Space, RRS (Expectation: two relevant, academic sources, with notes and link)
  • Revise Essay Outline tab on Libguides, focusing on expectation of PPT outline (March 31 deadline).
  • Look at the 4 step research process, bottom left of Starting Research tab (also p24 Course Companion)
  • How to incorporate evaluation of sources, into your RRS notes, p45-47 Course Companion
  • TO DO: Continue to gather relevant sources, read and note-take (provide evidence of this on your RRS); based on your research so far, start your PPT Outline
  • NEXT: Look at expectations of the first formal reflection session with your supervisor and first written reflection, 150 words, posted on RPPF/MB (also part of the March 31 deadline)

Session 11:

  • RRS updating
  • March 31st Deadline: PPT Outline. What should be included?
  • March 31st Deadline: First reflection meeting and written reflection; Reflection criteria and hypothetical marking
  • Taking a critical thinking approach, starting with your RQ. Be sure to look at both/different sides.
  • PPT Outline slides to be ready; reflection meeting/post prepared. Evidence of this can be your next RRS posts if you have already located relevant sources.
  • March 31st PPT Outline presentation to Supervisor due; send them your PPT in advance (not on the same day)
  • Wednesday, April 5th, first reflection on MB due
  • Today, looking at the first 3 criteria of the EE; upload your evaluation of the example EE, onto the padlet: https://padlet.com/taniajordan1/extended-essay-evaluation-ph23t92q3uzr204n
  • During Spring break, take the feedback from your supervisor, as the direction to be heading-in (either more research before writing; developing your ideas; searching more relevant sources etc)

Next deadline to prepare for: Friday May 17, 1000 words uploaded onto Managebac; shared with supervisor to receive written and oral feedback.

Make a plan for reaching the 1000 word deadline. If by the May 17 session there isn't evidence of nearly reaching 1000 words, you will be requested to stay at school sometime that week to finish it.

  • Revise last session using the padlet to better understand Criterion A, B and C; also expectations of an academic essay in terms of research, tone, language, analysis, logical sequence etc.
  • Look at an example of a cohesive, effective paragraph>> write and share an example of successful paragraph (on an unrelated topic that you know something about).

To do:

Make a writing plan to reach the May 17 goal of 1000 words. Enlist the support of your supervisor and myself.

Session 14:

May 17 Deadline: 1000 words uploaded bottom of Worksheet page on MB; shared with supervisor during a check-in session and have received written and spoken feedback; Science students make sure you have shared evidence of your planning for your experiment methodology and materials/relevant sources and familiarity with a successful EE in your topic/subject area

Today: Paraphrasing, direct quotations and using reporting verbs (using APA Style 7th edition)

NOTE: Same approach for a resource whether it is written on a page or spoken in an interview.

Go to the tab on Referencing and Formatting on this Libguides and read through the information

  • Paraphrase a relevant academic source using a suitable reporting verb and upload onto the padlet
  • Prepare a relevant direct quotation of a relevant academic source, use a suitable reporting verb and upload onto the padlet

Next: Go through your May 17 deadline writing and see how paraphrasing and reporting verbs can be included; as you continue to read more, highlight potential direct quotations for your easy reference

Session 15:

  • Referencing & Formatting:
  • Clarify paraphrasing (as opposed to citing sources) and use of quotations
  • APA Style checklist
  • Tables and figures
  • Essay Outline: Requirements of an EE Introduction
  • Writing feedback/recommendations: Tense, passive/active voice, first Vs third person etc  GRAMMARLY!
