‘In Flames’ Review: A Patriarchy Horror Story

Set in Pakistan, the story of a young woman and her family, hemmed in by men, shifts from realism to genre, with heart-pumping consequences.

It takes about an hour for “In Flames” to reveal itself as proper genre horror, but trepidation lurks from the start. In Karachi, Pakistan, the 20-something Mariam (Ramesha Nawal) lives with her widowed mother, Fariha (Bakhtawar Mazhar), and her younger brother, Bilal (Jibran Khan), who’s mostly glued to his video games. The family has been financially dependent on Fariha’s father-in-law, but as the film opens, he has just died — and Fariha’s brother-in-law, Uncle Nasir (Adnan Shah Tipu), is suddenly very interested in the relatives he had been neglecting.

Fariha teaches at an elementary school, and Mariam is studying for exams that will qualify her to be a doctor. They’re smart, capable women who are less concerned with dismantling established social orders than they are with keeping their home and family intact. Yet their lives are hemmed in by the men around them, with a constriction that’s suffocating. For one, there is Uncle Nasir, who has offered to pay the family’s outstanding debts if Fariha signs some documents, which Mariam pleads with her to avoid doing. But there’s also the man who throws a brick through the car window when Mariam is driving to the library, calling her a whore. Or the man who lurks outside her window, masturbating. Or even the nice young man from the library, Asad (Omar Javaid), who won’t leave Mariam alone.

As the women scramble to save their home, the walls close in on them, and that’s the point: “In Flames,” a confident feature debut written and directed by Zarrar Kahn, is one of several recent films from around the world that frame patriarchy as a nightmare. The most recent may be “ Shayda ,” set in Iran, but even movies like “Poor Things” and “Promising Young Woman” play with the same idea, albeit with a lighter touch. This one is set in Pakistan, in the midst of debates about religious fundamentalism and gender roles, but the outlines are familiar even to audiences in very different circumstances. Men commit obvious, blatant offenses, confident the system is stacked in their favor. But even the “good guys” are locked in a culture that rewards them for refusing to listen to the women who, it’s made clear, are holding the country together.

That means the horror extends to the male perpetrators, who couldn’t find their way out of the maze of unjust systems if they tried. But there’s no question the women bear the brunt of it, whether the perpetrator is abusive, or greedy, or just clueless. To seek help is fruitless, and dangerous; being in debt to yet one more man is another way to put yourself at risk.

Kahn manages to assemble the story in a way that escapes feeling like a series of object lessons. He centers the story on Mariam, giving Nawal’s expressive eyes plenty of time to convey emotions she dares not speak aloud. Mariam’s environment signals her inner life. Sometimes the character is in claustrophobic interiors, where she can’t escape others’ prying eyes; sometimes she’s blessedly alone; and sometimes she’s experiencing brief moments of respite in expansive, beautiful scenery. She feels a pull between the freedom she craves and the responsibility she feels to her family. Technically, Mariam is a plucky heroine. But she isn’t rebellious, or even defiant. She’s just trying to survive.

Wisely, Kahn creates a world in which Mariam and Fariha cannot help but be pulled apart, ruptured by the patriarchy’s force. The only way for each to endure is to depend on yet another man to help them, which has profoundly middling results, and an element of always-present danger. When the film finally gives way to full horror, the pace picks up, and we see what the movie’s been doing all along. Oppression isn’t always blatant, and it isn’t the work of individuals acting alone. It comes like night terrors, paralyzing both oppressor and oppressed — and escape can require drastic action.

“Golden Bachelor” lead Gerry Turner and his wife, Theresa Nist, are getting divorced after three months of marriage. The couple made the emotional announcement on “Good Morning America” Friday.

“Theresa and I have had a number of heart-to-heart conversations … and looked closely to our living situations,” he said, noting that they’ve decided to “dissolve” their marriage.

“We just feel like it’s best for the happiness of each of us to live apart,” he said. “I still love this person. There’s no doubt in my mind.”

The pair held hands during the sit-down. Nist explained that they looked at homes in South Carolina and considered New Jersey to settle down, but nothing came of their initial plans.

“I still love you,” the two said to each other. They did have a prenup, consider themselves “best friends” and will stay in touch. Even more, they are still looking for love — just not with each other.

“GMA” teased the shocking interview on Thursday, claiming the two had “something new they want to share” that would “have everyone talking.”

The news comes after reports that they were living separately, with Turner in Indiana and Nist in New Jersey. Turner proposed to Nist over runner-up Leslie Fhima in Costa Rica on the finale, which aired in November.

They married in an ABC-televised ceremony on Jan. 4.

“I promise to be your calm in a storm, to comfort you when you’re sad, to laugh with you when you’re happy, and just stick with you throughout it all,” Nist said in her vows.

“But most of all, to have fun for the rest of the days that we have left on this Earth — which could be another hour,” she joked.

Turner added, “I promise to make you feel comforted in difficult times, and abundantly joyful and great times. I promise in those dark Pillow Talk moments when silence deafens to share my innermost thoughts with you and to listen to yours tenderly and carefully because we have a trust that cannot be broken.”

“I also promise to keep track of your reading glasses all the time, and apparently some of your shoes now,” he quipped.

His daughters Angie and Jenny, as well as Theresa’s daughter, Jen, all spoke during the ceremony.

According to Turner’s Instagram, the “blended family” recently filmed an episode of “Celebrity Family Feud.” It is unclear when the episode will air.

In November 2023, Turner faced criticism when a woman identified only as “Carolyn” alleged to the Hollywood Reporter that she dated him for a few years before finding love on TV.

While their alleged relationship was long over, Turner and the franchise faced criticism for never mentioning this throughout his season.

The widower’s story that stole America’s hearts included losing his wife of 43 years, Toni, to an infection in 2017 and worrying he’d never find love again. However, “Carolyn” provided text messages that alleged Turner was gushing over her less than three months after Toni’s death.

He was also accused of dumping her for gaining weight. In response, Turner told the  New York Times : “I guess I haven’t really looked at it as how accurate it is,” admitting he gave the article a “cursory look.”

“I’ve more looked at it in terms of timing, and how it really doesn’t fit with all of the positive things that are going on in my life right now,” he continued. “I mean, I’m sitting across from Theresa right now, and I look at her, and she’s the love of my life. And I really don’t have time to think about some of the other stuff.”

“I have the wonderful love of Theresa, my partner,” he continued. “I don’t have time to reflect on comments like this. I’m happy to look forward.”

ذائقہ و مزاج

آج کل ہر شخص کی کچھ اپنی پسند نا پسند ہوتی ہے اسی لئے اخبار میں مختلف موضوعات پر لکھا یا چھاپا جاتا ہے۔ جیسے اگر ایک شخص کی توجہ کا مرکز کھلیوں کی جانکاری ہے اسے اپنے مزاج و ذائقہ کی مطابقت سے مواد مل جائے گا۔ کسی کی دلچسپیاں سیاست میں ہیں اسے وہ بھی میسر ہوجائے گا۔

اخبار کی اہمیت

قیام پاکستان کے وقت اخبار نے بہت اہم کردار ادا کیا۔ ایک دن کوئی بڑا رہنماء اپنی تقریر کرتا دوسرے دن وہ خبر ملک کے کونے کونے تک پہنچانے میں اخبار نے انتہائی سنجیدہ و اہم کردار ادا کیا ہے۔

۱۹۶۵ کی جنگ کی خبر کو ساری ملت تک پہنچانے کے لئے اسی اخبار نے مدد دی۔ اخبار سے ہی اپنے سپاہیوں کی سرفروشانہ کارناموں کی داستانیں ہم تک رساء کی گئیں۔

اخبار نے ہمیں جہاں بہت اچھی اچھی خبریں دی ہیں وہاں کچھ دل دہلا دینے والے واقعات بھی ہمارے گوش گزار کئے ہیں جیسے ۱۹۷۱ میں پاکستان دولخط ہوا۔ پاکستان میں ٹرین حادثات ،آتش ذدگی اور لوگوں کی ہلاکتوں کی خبریں، دہشت گردی کے سانحے  سے بھی ملک و قوم کو اخبار نے ہی باخبر کیا ہے۔

اگر اشیاء خوردنوش میں کچھ تبدیلیاں ہوتی ہیں تو حکومت براہِ راست تو عوام سے اس بارے میں بات نہیں کرسکتی اس لئے اخبار حکومت اور عوام کے درمیان ذرائع ابلاغ کا سب سے مؤثر نظام ہے۔ منڈی میں تیل کی قیمت کا اتار چڑھاؤ ہمیں اخبار بینی سے ہی معلوم پڑتا ہے۔

مسلمان امت کے احوال کی معلومات

کشمیر جل رہا ہے ، فلسطین ڈوب رہا ہے ، جنوبی افریقہ میں نسل پرست حکومت افریقی عوام پر مظالم کے پہاڑ توڑ رہی ہے، چین میں مسلمانوں پر مظالم ڈھائے جارہے ہیں ، پاکستان میں سیلاب ذدگان کی مدد کو پاک فوج سرگرم ہے۔ یہ تمام اطلاعات ہمیں اخبار کے مطالعہ سے ہی ملتی ہیں۔ ایک معاشرے میں اخبار کا بہت اہم کردار ہوتا ہے  معاشرے کی اصلاح و فلاح اخبار کی ذمہ داریوں میں شامل ہے۔
