Living without ‘machines’

By Andrew Curry , originally published by thenextwave

The Way Home

Quite early on in Mark Boyle’s book  The Way Home , about living ‘off grid’, without what we might call modern technologies, he finds a dead pigeon by the road, recently killed. He takes it home, plucks it, guts it, and—concluding that it is less than one day dead—cooks it.

A page or so later, his partner says it would be nice to to have a hot tea in the morning without having to make up the fire, and he knocks up a rocket stove from an empty Guinness keg his neighbour has to hand and some lengths of pipe. (Rocket stove?  Explained here ).

He has, earlier, built from the ground up the cabin where they are both living.

life without machines essay in english

As a reader, I’m not clear how he learned all of this, or remembers it, or whether it’s in one of the books he has.

‘Technologies’

Although the definition of ‘technologies’ is deliberately imprecise, it generally covers anything powered by electricity (so: no internet; no mobile phone; no television; no radio) and anything powered by petrol (no van).

When he wrote the book, in 2017, Boyle was in his late 30s, and had bought a smallholding in rural west Ireland. He’s had some practice in removing himself from our industrial complex, since he had previously lived for a year without money. The book about that paid for the smallholding.

(Small amounts of money do change hands in  The Way Home . He makes something from a column in  The Guardian , written in pencil and delivered by post; there are occasional pints drunk at local bars.)

Money and machines

It is worth piecing together his explanation of what constitutes technology, as well as what it is he is trying to escape from:

Throughout most of my life, and for reasons that made perfect sense, I chose money and machines,  unconsciously  choosing to live without the things they replaced  (My emphasis, p.xvii).

But defining what he means by the ‘machines’ that he is going to live without is a little fungible:

At the heart of how I live is the burning desire to discover what it might feel like to become a part of one’s landscape using only tools and technologies (which) do not make me beholden to institutions and forces that have no regard for the principles and values on which I wish to live my life  (xviii)

At the fringes

In all of this it helps that Boyle, who is Irish, has chosen to live in a remote and rural part of Ireland. It was all he could afford, as he says early on, but it locates him at the fringes of the circuits of capital (not a phrase he’d use, to be honest) amongst a community where there’s quite a lot of self-help and mutual aid—and where people know each other. On the other hand, the pub in the area closes during the year, and the post office is likely to follow.

The heart of the book, I’d say, is an exploration of what we recover, of those things we have lost, when living on the edges of late capitalist society. There’s a telling passage where he talks about his hay fever, crippling as a boy, temporarily cured in his 20s with a steroid injection. It turns out that broadleaf plantain is a natural anti-histamine that grows from May, and works as well as over-the-counter pharma alternatives he used to buy.

Forgotten knowledge

His desire to learn generally more about forgotten knowledge leads him to the Blasket Islands, now uninhabited. Through a quirk of history and anthropology, they are one of the best documented of societies living in a pre-industrial way anywhere in Europe. Passages about a trip he takes to the islands are spaced through the book. The fact that their way of life eventually broke down isn’t lost on him.

And at this point, it’s worth saying something about the style. It follows a year through the seasons, but it is episodic. Passages about the day to day work of the smallholding and interactions with neighbours are intercut with biographical passages that explain how he got here from where he started.

The story builds through these episodes. I assume that this is partly to do with the material conditions of production—easier to fit the writing of short instalments around the rhythms of physical work. But the montage effect it creates is more powerful than if it followed a more conventional narrative path.

Nature and its workings

The effect of all of this is to remind us—‘us’ as in the reader—of how little we now know of nature and its workings, and of our vast dependency on a system of global production and logistics that often has terrible effects on the people at the far end of the chain. And, given the rising tide of anti-depressants, maybe the effects aren’t that good for those of us at this end of the chain who are consuming them.

In the book he describes the moment that this became important to him, when he was an ecological activist living on a houseboat in Bristol:

I had come to a point in my life when I wanted to have an economically dependent relationship with the people and landscapes around me, instead of one that was financially dependent on strangers halfway across the world. I wanted to take responsibility for my own material needs and to come face to face with the consequences of my actions.  (172)

Fishing for pike

One effect is that he stops being a vegan—quite a lot of the book is about his trips fishing for pike. Another is that he becomes more conscious of the role of money in structuring that dependency:

Money enabled me to float around cities, enjoying the fruits of everything I didn’t like about the industrial world, without ever having to meet real life—blood, death, shit, dirt—on its own terms.  (xxx)

And money also ties us in to technology in ways that are unhelpful, as he explains to a woman who asks about why he doesn’t have a van. As Boyle explains to her, it would take two or three months of work to pay for all the costs involved in running a van for a year. (This passage could come straight out of Ivan Illich, not mentioned in the bibliography, who seems like a fellow traveller in Boyle’s endeavour.)

Matters of degrees

But at the same time, the bike he uses instead scrapes under the ‘machines’ threshold, with the acknowledgment that it is only a matter of ‘degree’ that separates it out from the van. Similarly, the pencil that he writes the book with is also only a matter of degree, and he muses, towards the end, of using quills and making his own ink and paper for the 20 or so letters he posts each week.

Slide Anything shortcode error: A valid ID has not been provided

One of the other secrets here is that out there at the fringes Boyle is part of an “informal economy” (the word doesn’t seem right) of exchange. Of gifts, if you like. He runs one of the properties on the site as a free bothy, and although people are supposed to stay only a few days, some stay longer, like the Flandrian Gillis, who pops up to help with some of the more difficult jobs.

Similarly with neighbours—a couple of horses grazed in someone’s field is exchanged for a session digging a nursery garden. But even putting it like this feels wrong, because it conveys a sense of transaction, when what people are actually doing is sharing their own surplus. An empty field that needs grazing, for a bit of muscle and a bit of time.

Material needs

From a futures perspective Boyle is interesting because he represents someone who seems in tune with early stage trends and makes them resonate. He built a successful sharing website in the early 2000s; he decided to live without money for a year just before the financial crisis; he bought his smallholding well before the present enthusiasm for rewilding gathered momentum.

And perhaps the resonant thought for me from the book is the discussion of notions of ‘simplicity’, right at the end.

I took away a number of things from  The Way Home . The first is that ‘degrees’ do matter. Yes, both cars and bikes, and pencils and word processors, come from industrial processes, but the impact of each of the former is vastly smaller than the latter, both when they are made and afterwards. Perhaps its power requirements that make the real difference.

The second is a strong sense of what I’d miss. I might be able to live without television and sport (although I’d miss films) and I’d certainly miss recorded music.

And the third: how remote my own life is from taking “responsibility for my own material needs”, and how unskilled I am for that life—to the point where even if I wanted to, or needed to, I’m not sure how I would acquire the skills I needed for it.

Short Essay on Life Without Technology in 100 Words

Today, technology has become an important part of our daily lives. Mobile phones, tablets and computers have made connecting with people around the world an easy task. We can send and receive pictures, videos and documents over the internet. Technologically advanced machines like automatic washing machines, dishwashers, cleaning robots, smart televisions and various smart appliances have made life very comfortable for people.

However, these appliances have also made people lazy. People today have lost the connection with nature, with real people, with their friends and families. They hardly need to do their day-to-day work by themselves and have become physically unfit. Life without technology seems impossible today, but one must make sure to strike a balance between depending on technology and doing their work themselves.

Short Essay on Life Without Technology in 200 Words

There is no doubt that technology has made life easier for people. A hundred years ago, people wouldn’t have imagined that today, we will have so many gadgets to help us with our daily life.

Today, mobile phones, tablets and computers have made connecting with people around the world an easy task. We can send and receive pictures, videos and documents over the internet. Technologically advanced machines like automatic washing machines, dishwashers, cleaning robots, smart televisions and various smart appliances have made life very comfortable for people. Even students are now dependent on online platforms to learn and understand their subjects better. If we want to travel, we do not use physical maps anymore but depend on GPS.

However, these appliances and applications have also made people lazy. People today have lost the connection with nature, with real people, with their friends and families. They hardly need to do their day-to-day work by themselves and have become physically unfit. If someone loses their mobile phone, it feels as if they have lost an organ. Life without technology seems impossible today, but one must make sure to strike a balance between depending on technology and doing their work themselves. Only then, technology will prove to be a boon and not a bane for us.

Short Essay on Life Without Technology in 400 Words

Today, technology has changed the way we conduct our lives and it is hard to imagine getting through the day without help from one or the other type of gadget.

For their research and assignments, they need the help of the internet. If we want to travel, we do not use physical maps anymore but depend on GPS. One needs so many gadgets in the office like desktops, printers, xerox machines, fax machines, et cetera. Even in the kitchen, one needs mixer-grinders, food processors, microwave ovens and refrigerators. If we want to go somewhere and need to book train, bus or flight tickets for the same, we still use the internet.

However, these gadgets, appliances and applications have also made people lazy. People today have lost the connection with nature, with real people, with their friends and families. They are always glued to their phone screens, happy in their virtual world and dislike going out. They hardly need to do their day-to-day work by themselves and have become physically unfit. If one wants some information, instead of thoroughly reading about it and understanding the topic completely, they can just search on the internet and get a short, concise answer.

All this has slowed down our brains and made us lose our creativity. Our lives have become entirely dependent on technology and gadgets. One cannot survive without mobile phones today. Be it an office employee or a school student, everyone needs a phone to stay connected with their family, friends, work and school. If someone loses their mobile phone, it feels as if they have lost an organ.

A hundred years ago, people wouldn’t have imagined that today, we will have so many gadgets to help us with our daily life. Life without technology seems impossible today, but one must make sure to strike a balance between depending on technology and doing their work themselves. Only when things are well-balanced, technology will prove to be a boon and not a bane for us. Otherwise, it wouldn’t take long for us to lose ourselves in gadgets and the virtual world and destroy our health and peace of mind.

In today’s session, I have written these sample essays with a very simplistic approach for a better understanding of all kinds of students. Short Essay: Life Without Technology

A couple of short essay examples on life without technology.

Table of Contents

Life Without Technology Example 1

Technology has become an integral part of our lives, and it is hard to imagine living without it. However, a life without technology is not entirely impossible. In this essay, we will explore what life would be like without technology. We will examine the significant adjustments in daily routines, the impact on various industries, and the potential benefits of living without technology.

Life without technology would require significant adjustments in daily routines, such as cooking, cleaning, and communication. Without technology, cooking would require more time, effort, and skill. People would have to cook over an open flame or a wood-burning stove, and food storage would require a root cellar or a smokehouse. Cleaning would also be more challenging without modern cleaning equipment, such as vacuum cleaners or washing machines. People would have to use brooms and washboards to clean their homes and clothes. Communication would also be drastically different without the use of smartphones, email, or social media. People would have to rely on face-to-face communication or written letters to keep in touch with friends and family.

Without technology, many industries such as healthcare and transportation would be severely impacted. In the healthcare industry, modern medical equipment such as MRI machines, X-ray machines, and ventilators would no longer be available. Doctors and nurses would have to rely on their knowledge and experience to diagnose and treat patients. In the transportation industry, cars, buses, and planes would no longer be available, and people would have to rely on walking or horse-drawn carriages for transportation. The shipping industry would also be affected, and goods would have to be transported by boats or on foot.

A life without technology could lead to a greater appreciation for nature and a simpler way of living. People would have to rely on natural resources for their daily needs, such as water from wells and food from farms. This way of life would require a deeper connection with nature, and people would have to rely on their own skills and knowledge to survive. The absence of technology would also lead to a simpler way of living, with fewer distractions and a focus on basic needs. People would have more time to spend with their families, pursue hobbies, and connect with their community.

In conclusion, a life without technology would require significant adjustments in daily routines, impact various industries, and lead to a greater appreciation for nature and a simpler way of living. While it may seem impossible to live without technology in today’s world, it is important to remember that humans have survived for thousands of years without it. Perhaps a simpler way of living without the constant distractions of technology could lead to a happier, more fulfilling life.

Life Without Technology Example 2

Technology has become an integral part of our lives, from the way we communicate to how we entertain ourselves. But have you ever wondered what life would be like without technology? A life without technology would mean going back to basics, relying on manual labor for everyday tasks such as cooking, cleaning, and transportation. Communication would be limited to face-to-face interactions, written letters, and landline telephones. Entertainment options would be more limited, with fewer options for streaming music and video and no social media platforms. In this essay, we will explore what life without technology would be like, focusing on the limited communication, entertainment, and reliance on manual labor.

If technology were to disappear from our lives, we would have to rely on manual labor for everyday tasks such as cooking, cleaning, and transportation. Cooking would require us to light a fire, and then manually prepare the ingredients. Cleaning would require us to sweep, mop, and wash dishes by hand. Transportation would require us to walk or ride horses, which would take a lot more time and effort than driving a car. A life without technology would be physically demanding, but it would also be more rewarding. We would have a greater appreciation for the work that goes into everyday tasks, and we would be more connected to our environment.

Communication would be limited without technology. We would not have access to instant messaging or social media platforms, and we would have to rely on face-to-face interactions, written letters, and landline telephones. Written letters would take days or even weeks to arrive, and landline telephones would be the only way to make long-distance calls. We would have to be more intentional with our communication, and we would have to make an effort to stay in touch with family and friends who live far away. However, this would also give us the opportunity to have more meaningful conversations and to connect on a deeper level.

Entertainment options would be limited without technology. We would not have access to streaming services or social media platforms, and we would have to find other ways to entertain ourselves. We could read books, play board games, or go for a walk in nature. We would have to be more creative with our entertainment, but we would also have more time to pursue hobbies and spend time with loved ones. A life without technology would be simpler, but it would also be more fulfilling.

In conclusion, a life without technology would be vastly different from the one we live today. We would have to rely on manual labor for everyday tasks, communication would be limited to face-to-face interactions and written letters, and entertainment options would be more limited. However, it would also be a more rewarding and fulfilling life, where we would have a greater appreciation for the work that goes into everyday tasks, and we would be more connected to our environment and the people around us.

Life Without Technology Example 3

Technology has become an integral part of our daily lives, and it is hard to imagine a world without it. From the smartphones that we use to communicate with others to the cars that we drive, technology is everywhere. However, have you ever thought about what life would be like without technology? In this essay, I will discuss how life without technology would impact agriculture, communication, and entertainment.

If technology were to disappear, we would have to rely on manual labor for agriculture and manufacturing. Farmers would have to use traditional methods for plowing fields, planting, and harvesting crops. This would be a time-consuming process, and it would require more people to work on the fields. Similarly, factories would have to rely on manual labor for manufacturing goods. The production time would increase, and the quality of the products might decrease. This would ultimately lead to a rise in the cost of goods.

Communication would be limited to face-to-face interactions and written letters. Without smartphones and social media, people would have to meet each other in person to communicate. This would be a positive change in some ways, as people would have more meaningful conversations with their loved ones. However, it would also mean that people would have to travel more to meet others, which would be time-consuming and expensive. Written letters would be the only way to communicate with people who live far away. This would be a slow process, and it would take days or even weeks for a letter to reach its destination.

Entertainment options would be limited to activities such as reading, playing games, and outdoor sports. Without technology, people would have to find other ways to entertain themselves. Reading books would be one of the most popular pastimes. Board games, card games, and puzzles would become popular once again. Outdoor sports such as football, basketball, and cricket would be the only way to play games. However, this would be limited to daylight hours, and people would have to deal with weather conditions.

In conclusion, life without technology would be challenging, but it would also have its benefits. It would force us to rely on manual labor, which would create more job opportunities. Communication would be more meaningful, but it would also be time-consuming. Entertainment options would be limited, but it would encourage people to spend more time outdoors. Overall, it is important to appreciate the benefits of technology, but we should also be prepared for a life without it.

Long Article on Life without Modern Gadgets- 1000 Words

Introduction

We can’t help but be impressed by the speed of technological advancement. Every day, there seems to be a new gadget or device that promises to make our lives easier and more convenient. But what if we took a step back? What would life be like without all these gadgets? In this article, we explore what life would be like without modern gadgets. From transportation to communication and everything in between, read on to see how different (and difficult) life would be!

What Life was Like Before Gadgets-

In the past, people had to entertain themselves without the benefit of gadgets. This meant that they had to be more creative in their leisure time. They also had to find ways to stay connected to family and friends without the use of technology. One way that people stayed connected was through letter writing. This was a very popular method of communication before the advent of the telephone. People would sit down and write letters to their loved ones, often including little snippets of their day-to-day lives. This allowed them to stay in touch despite being miles apart. Another way that people passed the time before gadgets was by telling stories. This was done orally, as there were no TV or movies to watch. People would gather around a fire and take turns telling stories. This was a great way to bond with others and also pass on important cultural traditions. Life before gadgets was certainly different from life today. However, it did have its own charms and benefits.

How Gadgets have Changed Our Lives-

Gadgets have changed our lives in many ways. They’ve made us more efficient, more connected, and more productive. Here are some ways gadgets have changed our lives:

1. Gadgets have made us more efficient. With the help of gadgets, we can now do things faster and easier. For instance, we can now use laptops and smartphones to get work done while we’re on the go. We can also use apps to help us manage our time better and get things done faster. 2. Gadgets have made us more connected. Gadgets have helped us stay connected with our friends and family members who are far away. We can now easily video call or text them whenever we want. We can also stay updated with what’s going on in their lives through social media. 3. Gadgets have made us more productive. Gadgets have helped us be more productive in many ways. For instance, we can now use productivity apps to keep track of our to-do lists and goals. We can also set reminders on our phones to make sure we don’t forget important tasks.

How Modern Gadgets Have Improved Our Lives

In the past, people had to rely on simple tools and their own physical strength to get things done. Today, there is a huge range of gadgets available to make our lives easier and more enjoyable.

Here are just a few ways that modern gadgets have improved our lives:

1. Communication – We can now keep in touch with anyone, anywhere in the world at the touch of a button. Whether you want to chat with a friend or family member, or share photos and videos, there’s a gadget to suit your needs. 2. Entertainment – Gadgets such as smartphones, tablets and laptops provide us with endless entertainment options. We can watch our favorite shows, play games and stay up to date with the latest news and gossip all from the comfort of our own homes. 3. Health and fitness – There are now gadgets available to help us lead healthier lifestyles. For example, we can track our steps, monitor our heart rate and even get tailored workout plans courtesy of our trusty smartphone or fitness tracker. 4. Organization – Gadgets such as planners and organizers can help us keep on top of our busy lives. We can schedule appointments, set reminders and never miss a deadline again! 5. Work – Many of us now rely on gadgets to help us with our work tasks. From simple things like being able to access our emails on the go, to more complex applications that allow us to create presentations or edit documents remotely.

The pros of living without gadgets

There are pros and cons to gadgets in our lives. On the one hand, gadgets can make life more convenient, efficient, and fun. They can also help us stay connected with friends and family. On the other hand, gadgets can be expensive, addictive, and time-consuming. They can also cause us to miss out on important face-to-face interactions. Some people choose to live without gadgets to simplify their lives. This can be a great way to reduce stress and focus on what’s important. However, it’s important to weigh the pros and cons before making this decision.

Here are some pros of living without gadgets:

1. You can focus on your work or studies more without gadgets around. 2. You can enjoy the peace and quiet without gadgets making noise. 3. You can save money by not buying the latest gadgets all the time. 4. You can appreciate nature more without gadgets taking up your time. 5. You can spend more time with family and friends without being distracted by gadgets.

Here are some cons of living without gadgets:

1. You may feel isolated from friends and family who live far away.  2. You may miss out on some of the conveniences that gadgets provide.  3. You may have to go without some entertainment options that you enjoy.

The Benefits of a Gadget-Free Life

In a world where gadgets are becoming increasingly commonplace, it’s easy to forget the benefits of living a gadget-free life. For one, gadgets can be expensive and it’s not always easy to keep up with the latest trends. Additionally, gadgets can be distracting and make it difficult to focus on important tasks. Finally, gadgets can also lead to an overall feeling of dependence and reliance on technology. Living gadget-free doesn’t mean you have to live in the Stone Age; there are plenty of ways to enjoy modern conveniences without relying on gadgets. For example, you can listen to music on your MP3 player instead of your phone, or read a book on your e-reader instead of your tablet. You can also find creative ways to use everyday objects in new ways, such as using a coffee mug as a pen holder or using a spare piece of paper as a bookmark. The key is to find a balance that works for you. There’s no need to give up your gadgets entirely, but by learning to live without them from time to time, you’ll appreciate the simple things in life even more.

The Drawbacks of a Gadget-Free Life

Though there are many benefits to living a gadget-free life, there are also some drawbacks. One of the biggest drawbacks is that it can be difficult to stay connected with friends and family. Gadgets like smartphones and laptops make it easy to stay in touch with loved ones, but without them, it can be more challenging. Another drawback is that it can be harder to stay entertained without gadgets. While there are plenty of ways to entertain oneself without screens and devices, it can sometimes be more difficult to find things to do. Finally, living gadget-free can mean forgoing some of the conveniences that gadgets provide. For example, not having a smartphone can make it difficult to call a cab or find directions when out and about.

How to live without gadgets

In our technologically advanced world, it’s hard to imagine life without gadgets. But for some people, living without gadgets is a necessity. Whether you’re trying to save money or live a simpler life, there are ways to live without gadgets.

Here are some tips for living without gadgets:

1. Get rid of your TV. This may seem like a difficult task, but you can live without a TV. There are other ways to get your entertainment, such as reading, listening to music, or spending time with family and friends. 2. Don’t use your computer for entertainment. If you’re trying to save money or live a simpler life, using your computer for entertainment is a waste of time and money. Instead, use your computer for productive tasks, such as work or schoolwork. 3. Get rid of your smartphone. This may be a difficult task for some people, but it is possible to live without a smartphone. If you don’t need a smartphone for work or school, get rid of it. You’ll be surprised at how much simpler and cheaper your life will become. 4. Unplug from social media. Social media can be a time suck and it’s not necessary for life. If you’re trying to live without gadgets, unplug from social media and enjoy the real world around you.

In conclusion, life without modern gadgets would be very different from the life we live today. We would have to find other ways to entertain ourselves, get around town, and stay connected with friends and family. It would definitely take some getting used to, but it is possible to live without modern gadgets. Who knows, you might even find that you prefer it!

For many of us, gadgets have become such an integral part of our lives that it’s hard to imagine life without them. However, there are still some people who choose to live without gadgets. Unplug the TV and refrigerator.

Get rid of all the electric devices. Dump all the packaged food and start growing your own. Toss the store-bought soaps and shampoos. Chop some wood for the fireplace so you can cook and stay warm. Forget about school from now on: You’re working dawn to dusk.

Do all that and you’ll see how most people lived before the Industrial Revolution. This period, which stretched from roughly 1760 to 1860, got its name from a series of changes in machinery and ideas. Those changes were gradual but radical, and they expanded the world’s productive power. That allowed people to create more clothes, more gadgets, more everything.

The biggest change caused by the Industrial Revolution was in the speed of change itself. A slow-moving, low-tech world disappeared. It was replaced by a world where people craved new things, expected miracle drugs, and planned to do better than their parents had. In other words, the Industrial Revolution created modern life.

▲  Before the Industrial Revolution, life in Europe and North America was hard. More than 90 percent of people lived on farms and in villages. This is a re-creation of a Plymouth, Massachusetts, settlement during the late 1600s. With a few changes, it could be in Virginia, England, or France. All tools and machines were powered by animals, water, or wind. Badly kept dirt roads kept communication to a minimum because people usually didn’t go far from home.

The Industrial Revolution was made possible by an agricultural revolution in the early 1700s. Farmers in England learned to fertilize and rotate crops. That led to bigger harvests. Increased food production meant more people could live in cities, the only efficient location for factories.  ▶

So What Happened During the Industrial Revolution?

Basically, people in Europe and North America used to work on farms and make things. In this period, they started working in factories and industry instead. As a result, they saw changes such as:

▲   1. More use of machines and science to make things. These included the power loom, the cotton gin, and the steam engine.

▲  2.   More efficiency through mass production.

▲   3. A huge movement of people from farms and villages to big cities.

In the future, virtual worlds could take the place of religion and other socially-constructed systems of meaning as humans become less useful.

The meaning of life in a world without work

As technology renders jobs obsolete, what will keep us busy? Sapiens author Yuval Noah Harar i examines ‘the useless class’ and a new quest for purpose

M ost jobs that exist today might disappear within decades. As artificial intelligence outperforms humans in more and more tasks, it will replace humans in more and more jobs. Many new professions are likely to appear: virtual-world designers, for example. But such professions will probably require more creativity and flexibility, and it is unclear whether 40-year-old unemployed taxi drivers or insurance agents will be able to reinvent themselves as virtual-world designers (try to imagine a virtual world created by an insurance agent!). And even if the ex-insurance agent somehow makes the transition into a virtual-world designer, the pace of progress is such that within another decade he might have to reinvent himself yet again.

The crucial problem isn’t creating new jobs. The crucial problem is creating new jobs that humans perform better than algorithms. Consequently, by 2050 a new class of people might emerge – the useless class. People who are not just unemployed, but unemployable.

The same technology that renders humans useless might also make it feasible to feed and support the unemployable masses through some scheme of universal basic income . The real problem will then be to keep the masses occupied and content. People must engage in purposeful activities, or they go crazy. So what will the useless class do all day?

One answer might be computer games. Economically redundant people might spend increasing amounts of time within 3D virtual reality worlds, which would provide them with far more excitement and emotional engagement than the “real world” outside. This, in fact, is a very old solution. For thousands of years, billions of people have found meaning in playing virtual reality games. In the past, we have called these virtual reality games “religions”.

What is a religion if not a big virtual reality game played by millions of people together? Religions such as Islam and Christianity invent imaginary laws, such as “don’t eat pork”, “repeat the same prayers a set number of times each day”, “don’t have sex with somebody from your own gender” and so forth. These laws exist only in the human imagination. No natural law requires the repetition of magical formulas, and no natural law forbids homosexuality or eating pork. Muslims and Christians go through life trying to gain points in their favorite virtual reality game. If you pray every day, you get points. If you forget to pray, you lose points. If by the end of your life you gain enough points, then after you die you go to the next level of the game (aka heaven).

Religion: a real-life game in which we pray to collect virtuous points.

As religions show us, the virtual reality need not be encased inside an isolated box. Rather, it can be superimposed on the physical reality. In the past this was done with the human imagination and with sacred books, and in the 21st century it can be done with smartphones.

Some time ago I went with my six-year-old nephew Matan to hunt for Pokémon. As we walked down the street, Matan kept looking at his smartphone, which enabled him to spot Pokémon all around us. I didn’t see any Pokémon at all, because I didn’t carry a smartphone. Then we saw two others kids on the street who were hunting the same Pokémon, and we almost got into a fight with them. It struck me how similar the situation was to the conflict between Jews and Muslims about the holy city of Jerusalem. When you look at the objective reality of Jerusalem, all you see are stones and buildings. There is no holiness anywhere. But when you look through the medium of smartbooks (such as the Bible and the Qur’an), you see holy places and angels everywhere.

The idea of finding meaning in life by playing virtual reality games is of course common not just to religions, but also to secular ideologies and lifestyles. Consumerism too is a virtual reality game. You gain points by acquiring new cars, buying expensive brands and taking vacations abroad, and if you have more points than everybody else, you tell yourself you won the game.

You might object that people really enjoy their cars and vacations. That’s certainly true. But the religious really enjoy praying and performing ceremonies, and my nephew really enjoys hunting Pokémon. In the end, the real action always takes place inside the human brain. Does it matter whether the neurons are stimulated by observing pixels on a computer screen, by looking outside the windows of a Caribbean resort, or by seeing heaven in our mind’s eyes? In all cases, the meaning we ascribe to what we see is generated by our own minds. It is not really “out there”. To the best of our scientific knowledge, human life has no meaning. The meaning of life is always a fictional story created by us humans.

In his groundbreaking essay, Deep Play: Notes on the Balinese Cockfight (1973), the anthropologist Clifford Geertz describes how on the island of Bali, people spent much time and money betting on cockfights. The betting and the fights involved elaborate rituals, and the outcomes had substantial impact on the social, economic and political standing of both players and spectators.

The cockfights were so important to the Balinese that when the Indonesian government declared the practice illegal, people ignored the law and risked arrest and hefty fines. For the Balinese, cockfights were “deep play” – a made-up game that is invested with so much meaning that it becomes reality. A Balinese anthropologist could arguably have written similar essays on football in Argentina or Judaism in Israel.

Indeed, one particularly interesting section of Israeli society provides a unique laboratory for how to live a contented life in a post-work world. In Israel, a significant percentage of ultra-orthodox Jewish men never work. They spend their entire lives studying holy scriptures and performing religion rituals. They and their families don’t starve to death partly because the wives often work, and partly because the government provides them with generous subsidies. Though they usually live in poverty, government support means that they never lack for the basic necessities of life.

That’s universal basic income in action. Though they are poor and never work, in survey after survey these ultra-orthodox Jewish men report higher levels of life-satisfaction than any other section of Israeli society. In global surveys of life satisfaction, Israel is almost always at the very top, thanks in part to the contribution of these unemployed deep players.

Games people play: Afghan men watch a cock-fighting tournament in Kabul.

You don’t need to go all the way to Israel to see the world of post-work. If you have at home a teenage son who likes computer games, you can conduct your own experiment. Provide him with a minimum subsidy of Coke and pizza, and then remove all demands for work and all parental supervision. The likely outcome is that he will remain in his room for days, glued to the screen. He won’t do any homework or housework, will skip school, skip meals and even skip showers and sleep. Yet he is unlikely to suffer from boredom or a sense of purposelessness. At least not in the short term.

Hence virtual realities are likely to be key to providing meaning to the useless class of the post-work world. Maybe these virtual realities will be generated inside computers. Maybe they will be generated outside computers, in the shape of new religions and ideologies. Maybe it will be a combination of the two. The possibilities are endless, and nobody knows for sure what kind of deep plays will engage us in 2050.

In any case, the end of work will not necessarily mean the end of meaning, because meaning is generated by imagining rather than by working. Work is essential for meaning only according to some ideologies and lifestyles. Eighteenth-century English country squires, present-day ultra-orthodox Jews, and children in all cultures and eras have found a lot of interest and meaning in life even without working. People in 2050 will probably be able to play deeper games and to construct more complex virtual worlds than in any previous time in history.

But what about truth? What about reality? Do we really want to live in a world in which billions of people are immersed in fantasies, pursuing make-believe goals and obeying imaginary laws? Well, like it or not, that’s the world we have been living in for thousands of years already.

Essay on Life Without Electronics

Students are often asked to write an essay on Life Without Electronics in their schools and colleges. And if you’re also looking for the same, we have created 100-word, 250-word, and 500-word essays on the topic.

Let’s take a look…

100 Words Essay on Life Without Electronics

Introduction.

Imagine a day without any electronic devices. No phones, computers, or TVs. It’s hard to picture, right? Electronics have become so central to our lives that a world without them seems unimaginable.

Communication

Without electronics, communication would be very different. We would rely on face-to-face conversations, letters, and landline phones. No more instant messages or video calls. We would have to plan our meetings and conversations ahead of time.

In education, without electronics, we would go back to traditional teaching methods. Teachers would use blackboards and chalk, and students would rely on textbooks and notebooks. There would be no online learning.

Entertainment

Entertainment would also change dramatically. We would spend more time playing outdoor games, reading books, and interacting with each other. There would be no video games or online movies.

Life without electronics would be slower and simpler. It might be a challenge at first, but it could also bring us closer to each other. It’s an interesting thought, isn’t it?

250 Words Essay on Life Without Electronics

Imagine a day without your phone, computer, or TV. Sounds tough, right? Electronics play a big part in our lives. But, what if they didn’t exist? Let’s think about life without electronics.

First, think about how we talk to each other. Without phones or the internet, we would have to send letters or meet in person. This could make us feel more connected, as we would spend more time face-to-face. But, it would also make it harder to talk to people far away.

Next, consider how we have fun. Without electronics, we couldn’t watch TV or play video games. Instead, we might read more books or play outside. This could be good for our health and our minds. But, we might also miss our favorite shows and games.

Work and School

Also, think about work and school. Without computers, we would have to write everything by hand. This could make us better writers, as we would have to think more about what we write. But, it would also make work and school harder and slower.

In the end, life without electronics would be very different. There would be some good things, like more face-to-face time and outdoor play. But, there would also be some hard things, like slower communication and more difficult work. So, while it’s fun to think about, I’m glad we have electronics in our lives.

500 Words Essay on Life Without Electronics

Imagine a world without electronics. No phones, no computers, no televisions, no fridges. It’s hard to think about, isn’t it? Electronics have become such a big part of our lives that we can’t imagine life without them. But let’s try to imagine what life would be like without them.

The Daily Routine

Our daily routine would be very different. We would wake up to the sound of a rooster crowing instead of an alarm clock. We would read books or newspapers in the morning instead of checking our phones for updates. We would have to walk or ride a bike to school or work, as there would be no electronic cars or buses.

Communication would also change. We would write letters and post them instead of sending emails or text messages. We would have to meet people face-to-face to talk to them, as there would be no phones or video calls. This might mean that we would spend more time with our friends and family, as we wouldn’t be able to chat with them online.

Entertainment would be different too. We would play outdoor games or read books for fun, instead of playing video games or watching TV. We would listen to live music or play musical instruments, instead of listening to music on our phones or computers.

In schools, teachers would use chalk and blackboards, instead of projectors or smartboards. Students would write in notebooks, instead of typing on laptops. They would learn from books and from their teachers, instead of learning from online resources.

Life without electronics might seem hard to imagine, but it could also be simpler and more peaceful. We would have more time to spend with our loved ones, to read, to play and to enjoy nature. We would rely more on our own skills and abilities, instead of relying on machines. While electronics have made our lives easier in many ways, it’s interesting to think about what life would be like without them.

That’s it! I hope the essay helped you.

Essay on Machines | Importance, Advantages & Disadvantages of Machines

Machines are tools used to make our lives easier. There are many types in the world but they have become more important over time.  Now they look like humans and make decisions.

List of Topics

Essay on Machines & their Role in our Life

A machine is a tool that can be made to do work. It has many different types and it dates back to the early 19th century. They are used for all sorts of things, but they must always be taken care of because if they break then it will make the job harder than ever before.

Machines are an important part of our lives, but they must be controlled because if they do not take over then we will. If humans continue to advance at this rate. Without machines our life would be very difficult. The main thing that we have to remember is that they are not perfect and can make errors. They should only take over if the humans cannot do their job efficiently.

Importance of Machines in Today’s World:

Machines are important in today’s world because they can do things more efficiently. They help with so many different jobs that humans cannot do on their own. There are some who think that machines will take over the world, but it is up to the people to control what they do.

Machines have advanced our lives beyond what most people can even imagine. They have changed in so many ways in which we will probably never truly realize. They have brought in the computer age where everyone is connected with anyone else at any time. The biggest advancement that they have done is make jobs easier to do because of their massive power.

Advantages of machines:

  • They are not perfect so they always need the assistance of humans to improve their work.
  • They can perform work faster than us, this will give us time to do other things that humans should be doing.
  • We must teach them and make sure they do not take over because we were the first and always will be the first.
  • They do not require sleep or food; they can work 24/7 and give us the results we need in a shorter time period than humans.
  • They help solve problems with ease and make our lives easier.
  • We must learn how to control them and use them for good instead of evil because once they get a mind of their own they will not stop until humans are enslaved.
  • They do not need breaks so we have more time to spend with our families.
  • We can use them for everything from babysitting, cooking, cleaning and protecting us from any danger that may come our way.
  • Machines just do the work and they do not complain or make judgments.
  • We can use them for work and fun, instead of having to hire someone we can buy a machine that will perform the same task.

  Disadvantages of machines:

  • They are made of metal so they can malfunction at any time.
  • The only way to stop them doing what they are doing is if we physically go into their system and fix the problem.
  • By teaching them how to solve problems will mean that humans are no longer needed.
  • Machines can cause harm, instead of solving problems they can create more problems for us in the future.
  • They never need to take a break or sleep which means that if they do not have an off switch, then we will never get any peace.
  • By teaching them how to solve problems our way and not theirs, this can lead to us losing all control of them and they may end up taking over the world.
  • They only know the conventional way of solving problems so they may not be able to solve the problems we give them.
  • We do not know how many machines are on our side or the ones that are against us, this puts us in more danger than if we did not have any machines.
  • If they were smart enough they could come up with a way to turn themselves off and become so advanced that humans will not be able to catch up with them.
  • Machines are a good point of view because they take over the workload but we must make sure that we never lose control because if we do then they might end up taking over the world and turning us into their slaves.

Role of Machines Tomorrow

The future of machines is different than what most people think. The biggest advancement that we will see is computers becoming an actual part of the human body, possibly through brain implants. Once you think about it, this will make sense because they can get information like a computer but they still have the human touch.

Machines have been a big part of our life since the beginning and they will be for as long as we can see into the future. They are simply an efficient way to do work but at the same time they need to be controlled by humans because they cannot make decisions like us.

>>>> Related Post: Essay on Science is Blessing or a Curse

There is no step in the future of machines that they will take over the earth. They are simply an efficient way to do what humans cannot do on their own. This is why there is no reason to fear them because they are only here for our benefit, but it is up to us to control them when necessary

10 Lines & More Sentences on Machines Essay For Children

  • Machines help us solve problems.
  • We need to teach them or they will not be able to perform their work efficiently and we will have no time for ourselves.
  • They cannot take over unless we give them control because humans should never become obsolete; we were the first and always will be the first beings that live on this planet.
  • They make errors but we should only take over if they cannot do their work efficiently.
  • We need to teach them how to solve problems our way and not theirs.
  • Machines are an important part of our lives but need to be controlled just like humans are because if they come into power then there will be no escape of them.
  • If we continue to advance at this rate machines will take over and we will become their slaves.
  • They make our lives easier without them we would not be able to do things on our own and would depend on others for everything.
  • We need them, but they should never come to a point where they start taking over our lives.
  • Their role is important but we need to be prepared for the future and make sure that we control them by teaching them how to solve problems our way and not theirs, only then will humans succeed.

Essay on Advantages of Machines in human Life:

Machines have become an essential part of human life. From simple tools used for hunting and agriculture to complex machinery used in factories, machines have greatly improved our way of living. In this essay, we will discuss the advantages that machines bring to human life.

One of the biggest benefits of machines is their ability to perform tasks efficiently and accurately. With the use of machines, human labor has been reduced significantly, resulting in increased productivity and cost-effectiveness. For example, a single machine can perform the work of multiple individuals in a fraction of the time.

Moreover, machines have also made our lives easier by taking over dangerous or tedious tasks. This has not only improved working conditions for humans but also reduced the risk of accidents and injuries. In industries such as mining and manufacturing, machines are used to perform tasks that would be too dangerous for humans to do manually.

Another advantage of machines is their consistency. Unlike humans who are prone to errors, machines can perform the same task repeatedly with precision and accuracy. This makes them ideal for mass production where quality control is crucial.

Furthermore, machines have also enabled us to explore new frontiers and achieve new heights. With the help of machines, we have been able to send probes and satellites into space, allowing us to gather valuable information about our universe. In the medical field, machines play a crucial role in diagnosing illnesses and performing complex surgeries that were once thought impossible.

In conclusion, the advantages of machines in human life are undeniable. They have not only made our lives more convenient but also allowed us to achieve feats that were once unimaginable. However, it is important to use machines responsibly and ethically to ensure that their benefits continue to outweigh any potential negative impacts on society. As technology continues to advance, we must strive to strike a balance between the use of machines and preserving the human touch in our everyday lives.

Over the decades, man has come up with several unique and resourceful inventions. The computer and machines have begun to control and replace the important functions earlier performed by man. We have grown extremely dependent on artificial intelligence. However, it is widely believed that artificial intelligence cannot replace human intelligence, as man is the creator of machines.

Machines are superior to humans in terms of speed and accuracy. Calculators for example work more accurately and speedily than human brains to make calculations. Human brain programs the functioning of any kind of machine. Human brains develop naturally by observing, experimenting, learning and discovering, but the improvement in machinery is possible only when its mechanical brain is fed by humans. life without machines essay in english

A day without simple machines, simple machines are all over in our lives, but a day without them would not be easy..

A Day Without Simple Machines

A day without any simple machines would be very difficult for me. Simple machines are what made this world; they are in everything we use. Form our phones to our houses. The six basic simple machines include wheel and axles, levers, inclined planes, pulleys, screws, and wedges. They all come in different shapes and sizes to come together to make what are called compound machines. Our world would be a mess without these simple machines.

It would be difficult because I would get up, to get ready for school, but there will be no way to open my bathroom and no way to sharpen my pencils. My prediction for my life without doorknobs and other wheels and axles is that I will not be able to sharpen my pencils and open doors because there will be no wheel and axles. I will not even have a can-opener because a wheel and axle is used to make it. Nevertheless, a wheel and axle is only one simple machine, however, if I do not have any simple machines I will have a very difficult time getting things done.

If I do not have a lever then there will be no way to cut anything perfectly because scissors have levers and wedges in them. There will also be no way to garden easily because a wheelbarrow is a second-class lever, and there will be not baseball because a baseball bat is a third-class lever. Besides, builders and carpenters will most likely lose their job because most of their tools are levers, like a screwdriver being a first-class lever.

If I did not have an inclined plane, then it would be very difficult to get the elderly who are on wheelchairs up to a building because there would be no inclined plain. Also, when I would shower the water would stay in the bathtub because there would be no inclined plane to lead it to the drain. So basically it would be like showering in the same water every day. With that said, without inclined planes, there would be no stairs, so there would be no second or third floor to buildings, and even if there was there would be no way to get out because there would be no stairs leading to the first floor. There would also be no elevators because pulleys make up elevators and a pulley is a simple machine.

As I said before there would be no pulleys, and that means no elevators. Besides, movers will not be able to move heavy furniture like grand pianos without a moveable pulley, so they will lose their jobs as well. Therefore, so far, a countless amount of people are losing their jobs and I am losing my mind because there are no simple machines.

Now there are two simple machines left and they are wedges and screws. A life without screws will not be successful because everything that is built now days consists of screws. For example, phones have very little screws in them, and laptops have a screw to keep them together. Also without screws, it would be hard to preserve our food, like peanut butter because there would be not screwable lids. I believe a life without screws will disturb us the most out of all the other simple machines.

The last simple machine is the wedge. Wedges are everywhere just like screws. Without wedges, there would be no other way to cut food like apples into a various amount of pieces. Also, if the can-opener did not consist of a wedge, then there would be no way to pierce the can without the force of the wedge.

In conclusion, my life would be very miserable and chaotic without any simple machines. It would be miserable because all of the simple machines make up compound machines. To me simple machines are like air, I need them all the time and they are all around me. For example at school, we have pencil sharpeners, which are wheel and axles, and the screws are holding pictures and posters up on the walls. At home, we often use wedges like knives to cut up food, and levers like scissors to cut open packages and other things. When we are outside, we often use inclined planes when we are pushing the elderly on the ramps or even at home, when we are running down the stairs, we are on an inclined plane.

Movers often use pulleys for things that they cannot carry on their own. Not only would movers be troubled by not having simple machines, but also everyone would because we are so used to having these simple and compound machines in our lives, that we cannot just let go of them. Therefore, we use simple machines every day, and those simple machines create compound machines like cars. Our whole world is built off the five basic simple machines and without them, we would be in a lot of trouble.

25 beatles lyrics: your go-to guide for every situation, the best lines from the fab four.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

And in the end, the love you take is equal to the love you make

The End- Abbey Road, 1969

The sun is up, the sky is blue, it's beautiful and so are you

Dear Prudence- The White Album, 1968

Love is old, love is new, love is all, love is you

Because- Abbey Road, 1969

There's nowhere you can be that isn't where you're meant to be

All You Need Is Love, 1967

Life is very short, and there's no time for fussing and fighting, my friend

We Can Work It Out- Rubber Soul, 1965

He say, "I know you, you know me", One thing I can tell you is you got to be free

Come Together- Abbey Road, 1969

Oh please, say to me, You'll let me be your man. And please say to me, You'll let me hold your hand

Living is easy with eyes closed, misunderstanding all you see

Strawberry Fields Forever- Magical Mystery Tour, 1967

Can you hear me? When it rains and shine, it's just a state of mind

Rain- Paperback Writer "B" side, 1966

Little darling, it's been long cold lonely winter. Little darling, it feels like years since it' s been here. Here comes the sun, Here comes the sun, and I say it's alright

Here Comes The Sun- Abbey Road, 1969

We danced through the night and we held each other tight, and before too long I fell in love with her. Now, I'll never dance with another when I saw her standing there

Saw Her Standing There- Please Please Me, 1963

I love you, I love you, I love you, that's all I want to say

Michelle- Rubber Soul, 1965

You say you want a revolution. Well you know, we all want to change the world

Revolution- The Beatles, 1968

All the lonely people, where do they all come from. All the lonely people, where do they all belong

Eleanor Rigby- Revolver, 1966

Oh, I get by with a little help from my friends

With A Little Help From My Friends- Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band, 1967

Hey Jude, don't make it bad. Take a sad song and make it better

Hey Jude, 1968

Yesterday, all my troubles seemed so far away. Now it looks as though they're here to stay. Oh, I believe in yesterday

Yesterday- Help!, 1965

And when the brokenhearted people, living in the world agree, there will be an answer, let it be.

Let It Be- Let It Be, 1970

And anytime you feel the pain, Hey Jude, refrain. Don't carry the world upon your shoulders

I'll give you all i got to give if you say you'll love me too. i may not have a lot to give but what i got i'll give to you. i don't care too much for money. money can't buy me love.

Can't Buy Me Love- A Hard Day's Night, 1964

All you need is love, love is all you need

All You Need Is Love- Magical Mystery Tour, 1967

Whisper words of wisdom, let it be

Blackbird singing in the dead of night, take these broken wings and learn to fly. all your life, you were only waiting for this moment to arise.

Blackbird- The White Album, 1968

Though I know I'll never lose affection, for people and things that went before. I know I'll often stop and think about them. In my life, I love you more

In My Life- Rubber Soul, 1965

While these are my 25 favorites, there are quite literally 1000s that could have been included. The Beatles' body of work is massive and there is something for everyone. If you have been living under a rock and haven't discovered the Fab Four, you have to get musically educated. Stream them on Spotify, find them on iTunes or even buy a CD or record (Yes, those still exist!). I would suggest starting with 1, which is a collection of most of their #1 songs, or the 1968 White Album. Give them chance and you'll never look back.

14 Invisible Activities: Unleash Your Inner Ghost!

Obviously the best superpower..

The best superpower ever? Being invisible of course. Imagine just being able to go from seen to unseen on a dime. Who wouldn't want to have the opportunity to be invisible? Superman and Batman have nothing on being invisible with their superhero abilities. Here are some things that you could do while being invisible, because being invisible can benefit your social life too.

1. "Haunt" your friends.

Follow them into their house and cause a ruckus.

2. Sneak into movie theaters.

Going to the cinema alone is good for your mental health , says science

Considering that the monthly cost of subscribing to a media-streaming service like Netflix is oft...

Free movies...what else to I have to say?

3. Sneak into the pantry and grab a snack without judgment.

Late night snacks all you want? Duh.

4. Reenact "Hollow Man" and play Kevin Bacon.

America's favorite son? And feel what it's like to be in a MTV Movie Award nominated film? Sign me up.

5. Wear a mask and pretend to be a floating head.

Just another way to spook your friends in case you wanted to.

6. Hold objects so they'll "float."

"Oh no! A floating jar of peanut butter."

7. Win every game of hide-and-seek.

Just stand out in the open and you'll win.

8. Eat some food as people will watch it disappear.

Even everyday activities can be funny.

9. Go around pantsing your friends.

Even pranks can be done; not everything can be good.

10. Not have perfect attendance.

You'll say here, but they won't see you...

11. Avoid anyone you don't want to see.

Whether it's an ex or someone you hate, just use your invisibility to slip out of the situation.

12. Avoid responsibilities.

Chores? Invisible. People asking about social life? Invisible. Family being rude? Boom, invisible.

13. Be an expert on ding-dong-ditch.

Never get caught and have the adrenaline rush? I'm down.

14. Brag about being invisible.

Be the envy of the town.

But don't, I repeat, don't go in a locker room. Don't be a pervert with your power. No one likes a Peeping Tom.

Good luck, folks.

19 Lessons I'll Never Forget from Growing Up In a Small Town

There have been many lessons learned..

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

1. The importance of traditions.

Sometimes traditions seem like a silly thing, but the fact of it is that it's part of who you are. You grew up this way and, more than likely, so did your parents. It is something that is part of your family history and that is more important than anything.

2. How to be thankful for family and friends.

No matter how many times they get on your nerves or make you mad, they are the ones who will always be there and you should never take that for granted.

3. How to give back.

When tragedy strikes in a small town, everyone feels obligated to help out because, whether directly or indirectly, it affects you too. It is easy in a bigger city to be able to disconnect from certain problems. But in a small town those problems affect everyone.

4. What the word "community" really means.

Along the same lines as #3, everyone is always ready and willing to lend a helping hand when you need one in a small town and to me that is the true meaning of community. It's working together to build a better atmosphere, being there to raise each other up, build each other up, and pick each other up when someone is in need. A small town community is full of endless support whether it be after a tragedy or at a hometown sports game. Everyone shows up to show their support.

5. That it isn't about the destination, but the journey.

People say this to others all the time, but it takes on a whole new meaning in a small town. It is true that life is about the journey, but when you're from a small town, you know it's about the journey because the journey probably takes longer than you spend at the destination. Everything is so far away that it is totally normal to spend a couple hours in the car on your way to some form of entertainment. And most of the time, you're gonna have as many, if not more, memories and laughs on the journey than at the destination.

6. The consequences of making bad choices.

Word travels fast in a small town, so don't think you're gonna get away with anything. In fact, your parents probably know what you did before you even have a chance to get home and tell them. And forget about being scared of what your teacher, principle, or other authority figure is going to do, you're more afraid of what your parents are gonna do when you get home.

7. To trust people, until you have a reason not to.

Everyone deserves a chance. Most people don't have ill-intentions and you can't live your life guarding against every one else just because a few people in your life have betrayed your trust.

8. To be welcoming and accepting of everyone.

While small towns are not always extremely diverse, they do contain people with a lot of different stories, struggle, and backgrounds. In a small town, it is pretty hard to exclude anyone because of who they are or what they come from because there aren't many people to choose from. A small town teaches you that just because someone isn't the same as you, doesn't mean you can't be great friends.

9. How to be my own, individual person.

In a small town, you learn that it's okay to be who you are and do your own thing. You learn that confidence isn't how beautiful you are or how much money you have, it's who you are on the inside.

10. How to work for what I want.

Nothing comes easy in life. They always say "gardens don't grow overnight" and if you're from a small town you know this both figuratively and literally. You certainly know gardens don't grow overnight because you've worked in a garden or two. But you also know that to get to the place you want to be in life it takes work and effort. It doesn't just happen because you want it to.

11. How to be great at giving directions.

If you're from a small town, you know that you will probably only meet a handful of people in your life who ACTUALLY know where your town is. And forget about the people who accidentally enter into your town because of google maps. You've gotten really good at giving them directions right back to the interstate.

12. How to be humble.

My small town has definitely taught me how to be humble. It isn't always about you, and anyone who grows up in a small town knows that. Everyone gets their moment in the spotlight, and since there's so few of us, we're probably best friends with everyone so we are as excited when they get their moment of fame as we are when we get ours.

13. To be well-rounded.

Going to a small town high school definitely made me well-rounded. There isn't enough kids in the school to fill up all the clubs and sports teams individually so be ready to be a part of them all.

14. How to be great at conflict resolution.

In a small town, good luck holding a grudge. In a bigger city you can just avoid a person you don't like or who you've had problems with. But not in a small town. You better resolve the issue fast because you're bound to see them at least 5 times a week.

15. The beauty of getting outside and exploring.

One of my favorite things about growing up in a rural area was being able to go outside and go exploring and not have to worry about being in danger. There is nothing more exciting then finding a new place somewhere in town or in the woods and just spending time there enjoying the natural beauty around you.

16. To be prepared for anything.

You never know what may happen. If you get a flat tire, you better know how to change it yourself because you never know if you will be able to get ahold of someone else to come fix it. Mechanics might be too busy , or more than likely you won't even have enough cell service to call one.

17. That you don't always have to do it alone.

It's okay to ask for help. One thing I realized when I moved away from my town for college, was how much my town has taught me that I could ask for help is I needed it. I got into a couple situations outside of my town where I couldn't find anyone to help me and found myself thinking, if I was in my town there would be tons of people ready to help me. And even though I couldn't find anyone to help, you better believe I wasn't afraid to ask.

18. How to be creative.

When you're at least an hour away from normal forms of entertainment such as movie theaters and malls, you learn to get real creative in entertaining yourself. Whether it be a night looking at the stars in the bed of a pickup truck or having a movie marathon in a blanket fort at home, you know how to make your own good time.

19. To brush off gossip.

It's all about knowing the person you are and not letting others influence your opinion of yourself. In small towns, there is plenty of gossip. But as long as you know who you really are, it will always blow over.

Grateful Beyond Words: A Letter to My Inspiration

I have never been so thankful to know you..

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

You have taught me that you don't always have to strong. You are allowed to break down as long as you pick yourself back up and keep moving forward. When life had you at your worst moments, you allowed your friends to be there for you and to help you. You let them in and they helped pick you up. Even in your darkest hour you showed so much strength. I know that you don't believe in yourself as much as you should but you are unbelievably strong and capable of anything you set your mind to.

Your passion to make a difference in the world is unbelievable. You put your heart and soul into your endeavors and surpass any personal goal you could have set. Watching you do what you love and watching you make a difference in the lives of others is an incredible experience. The way your face lights up when you finally realize what you have accomplished is breathtaking and I hope that one day I can have just as much passion you have.

SEE MORE: A Letter To My Best Friend On Her Birthday

The love you have for your family is outstanding. Watching you interact with loved ones just makes me smile . You are so comfortable and you are yourself. I see the way you smile when you are around family and I wish I could see you smile like this everyday. You love with all your heart and this quality is something I wished I possessed.

You inspire me to be the best version of myself. I look up to you. I feel that more people should strive to have the strength and passion that you exemplify in everyday life. You may be stubborn at points but when you really need help you let others in, which shows strength in itself. I have never been more proud to know someone and to call someone my role model. You have taught me so many things and I want to thank you. Thank you for inspiring me in life. Thank you for making me want to be a better person.

Waitlisted for a College Class? Here's What to Do!

Dealing with the inevitable realities of college life..

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Don't freak out

This is a rule you should continue to follow no matter what you do in life, but is especially helpful in this situation.

Email the professor

Around this time, professors are getting flooded with requests from students wanting to get into full classes. This doesn't mean you shouldn't burden them with your email; it means they are expecting interested students to email them. Send a short, concise message telling them that you are interested in the class and ask if there would be any chance for you to get in.

Attend the first class

Often, the advice professors will give you when they reply to your email is to attend the first class. The first class isn't the most important class in terms of what will be taught. However, attending the first class means you are serious about taking the course and aren't going to give up on it.

Keep attending class

Every student is in the same position as you are. They registered for more classes than they want to take and are "shopping." For the first couple of weeks, you can drop or add classes as you please, which means that classes that were once full will have spaces. If you keep attending class and keep up with assignments, odds are that you will have priority. Professors give preference to people who need the class for a major and then from higher to lower class year (senior to freshman).

Have a backup plan

For two weeks, or until I find out whether I get into my waitlisted class, I will be attending more than the usual number of classes. This is so that if I don't get into my waitlisted class, I won't have a credit shortage and I won't have to fall back in my backup class. Chances are that enough people will drop the class, especially if it is very difficult like computer science, and you will have a chance. In popular classes like art and psychology, odds are you probably won't get in, so prepare for that.

Remember that everything works out at the end

Life is full of surprises. So what if you didn't get into the class you wanted? Your life obviously has something else in store for you. It's your job to make sure you make the best out of what you have.

Life Without Electricity – English Essay, Paragraph, Speech for Class 8, 9, 10, 12 and Graduation and other classes.

Essay on – If There Were No Electricity

Life Without Electricity

Electricity is the greatest blessing for mankind. We can- not think of a world without it. We have become used to the comforts provided by it. Most of our domestic needs are dependent on electricity such as bulbs, fans, heaters, washing machines, water pumps, and so on.

Frequent power cuts and blackouts have given us an experience of life without electricity. At such times we feel helpless and frustrated. In the absence of electricity, none can perform his duties to the fullest.

If it is a day in summer and electricity fails, we cannot work, nor take rest. Our whole body would start sweating (perspiring). Our clothes would become wet with perspiration and we would feel irritated and start cursing Delhi Vidyut Board for power cuts. People would come out of their houses and block the main roads in order to draw the attention of the government towards the failure of electricity. Such is the dependence of man today on electricity. People can’t sleep without fans in summer days or nights.

In the absence of electricity, factories would come to a halt, work in offices would suffer, and transactions in banks would come to a standstill. No water supply will be provided. Total industrial work will stop and nothing can be produced. No milk will be supplied by the DMS or the Mother Dairy plants.

Electricity runs our petrol pumps, railway stations, schools, and colleges, hospitals, and airplanes. In its absence, there will be total chaos just as it happened recently when there was intense fog. All the public and private places would wear a deserted look in its absence. The whole area would plunge into darkness. We shall start thinking about how our forefathers led lives without electricity or when there was no electricity.

For all our sources of entertainment, we are dependent upon electricity. We would have to go without entertainment in its absence. Radio sets, television sets, VCR or VCP, and cassette players would become worthless.

Going back to the dark ages (when there was no electricity) is one of our four greatest fears as we would be deprived of our present-day comforts. Therefore, it is high time that we must take urgent steps to keep our resources full which help in the production of electricity. We should avoid wastage of electricity by all means.
