Biography [ ]

Before the show [ ].

Phil was born on April 3rd, 1968 in Key West, Florida to Frank and Grace Dunphy . From his mother's side, he is part Australian. He lived near Lake Okeechobee . (" Legacy ") He went to high school where he was an active member of the cheerleading squad, a habit he continued to pursue until his college years.

On his 12th birthday, Phil hit 10 straight fastballs in the batting cage. His best friend then, Jeff Sweeney stepped in and was hit in the groin, to which Phil shouted "Ball two!" and people laughed. Phil would regard this as his best birthday for years, and according to him, also the moment he discovered that he is funny (" Game Changer ").

Phil had two girlfriends before Claire in 1991: Denise , whom he broke up with while he was already dating Claire (" Truth Be Told "), and Carla Concannon, to whom he lost his virginity to on June 10th, 1988 while listening to Carly Simon's Nobody Does it Better (" Sleeper ").

During college, he had a roommate, Ling a fellow cheerleader who would later be mentioned to having built his own helicopter. He had a rival in college named Glen Whipple, captain of the cheer leading squad who also break dances and performs magic like Phil. He mentioned going to trapeze school (" Benched ") and having a job parking cars where he dented an Aston Martin (" The One That Got Away ").

He also has a severe fear of clowns, which he attributes to his accidental finding of a dead clown in the woods when he was a child (" Fizbo ").

He has gone viral on YouTube twice, once with the video ' Man Hit on Head With Basketball ' and twice with the video ' Public Access Pervert - Autotuned '.

Personality [ ]

Phil describes himself as a "cool dad." A devoted family man, he dotes on his wife Claire and constantly tries to find ways to bond with his three kids, which quite often falls short. He uses a parenting method that he calls "peerenting", which is a combination of talking like a peer, but acting like a parent (" Pilot "). Phil is generally portrayed as a good person who always takes the high road in dealing with difficulties, except when pushed too his limit as in " Fulgencio ", where turned to mafia-like ways to solve his family's problems. Phil is often obsessive over being his kids' best buddy, which falls short especially as his kids go through puberty.

Phil is shown to be childlike and clumsy at times, and is implied by Claire to possibly have ADHD , characteristics he seems to share with his son Luke. One running gag with Phil is that he frequently makes accidental double entendres , often to the expense of Claire or his intelligence.

Phil is portrayed as a funny guy, which he claims started at his 12th birthday party where everyone laughed at his joke and he discovered he is funny. He often uses wordplay and improvisation in sentences to entertain people. For example, when before he answers the phone, he once asks "Who sang Evil Woman?" and then answers the phone " E-L-O " as in 'Hello'.

Phil is also an avid follower of technology, being adept on the latest gadgets with his online buddies. He loves sci-fi , fantasy and role-playing, as well as the concept of robots taking over or being used to further people's lives. Phil is a born dreamer always almost unshakably optimistic, easy-going, happy-go-lucky and maintains a positive attitude in an insane degree of situations. Despite this, he is fully capable of being deadly serious when his family's welfare is being compromised. Phil is also very good at choosing presents, according to Claire, which she is very bad at (" Great Expectations ").

Phil is a realtor and takes his job seriously, to such a point that Claire believes incorrectly that it is the only thing that he ever takes seriously. Because of his career in presenting comfortable homes to a variety of people, he gets on with other people effortlessly, especially divorcées (" Larry's Wife ").

Phil is not only fun-loving and almost childishly optimistic, but also extremely compassionate and empathetic to a fault. He selflessly puts others a mile ahead of himself and is willing to help out his family and friends, even Jay (Who has always shown animosity towards him) when they are in a jam. Despite this, Phil can lose his cool when pushed too far, which climactically comes to pass in " When a Tree Falls " Jay unintentionally jokingly mocks Phil in front of his friends. In the ensuing boxing match between them, Phil obliterates Jay and beats him furiously. This is fuelled by some boxed-up rage against Jay for resenting him since they met. He is willing to apologize to Jay afterwards. Also, Phil is the first to truly comfort Jay in " The Storm ", when Jay laments about the friends he lost in the military and that he feels compelled by their tradition to toast the fallen when one of their surviving comrades dies.

One of his infamous traits would be his effeminacy, especially when compared to his wife, a prime example of such role reversal would be when Claire became head of Jay's closet industry and he becomes the neglected trophy wife (instead of the stereotypical other way around). He enjoys spa days, gossip and was revealed to be a fully licensed hair stylist and masseuse. However, Phil's effeminacy is also a useful trait for his job as a realtor; he has shown power over women because of his reliability and trustworthy nature. Gloria admits that he is impossible to lie to and is easy to confide within such as when he helped her settle her problems with her old apartment while he was a hairdresser at the time.

Phil is revealed to be attracted to black women, although he only realized this while claiming he had a thing for powerful women: Michelle Obama, Serena Williams and Oprah Winfrey, only realizing the connection whilst listing.

Appearance [ ]

Phil is a tall man in his early fifties. He is in good shape, going to the gym (" Mistery Date "), running on the treadmill (" The Old Man & the Tree ") and doing power walks (" Door to Door "). Phil likes to prove his manliness, especially to his father-in-law (" Snip "). He is often seen wearing a dress shirt and trousers. On the show's Valentine's Day episodes, Phil takes on an alter ego of Clive Bixby to go role-playing with Claire, who takes an alter ego of her own, Julianna . Frequently their attempts for a romantic evening go horribly wrong and end in either Phil or Claire being in a tight position.

Occupations [ ]

Construction worker [ ].

Phil worked in construction prior to being a real estate agent. One of the structures he worked on was the Rialto Theater. (" Crying Out Loud ")

Real Estate Agent [ ]

Phil's occupation at the moment is being a real estate agent. Phil helps people to either buy or sell a home or a piece of property. This may range from plots of land and small starter homes to exotic islands and luxury mansions (" Phil's Sexy, Sexy House "). Phil can work either as a listing agent, to help a client sell a home, or as a buyer's agent, to help the client buy a home. Real estate agents are employed worldwide as the need for buying and selling homes and property has always existed and will continue to do so. Phil has to be honest and loyal to his clients.

Relationships [ ].

Claire&phil

Claire Dunphy is Phil's wife. Phil tries to be a good husband to her but sometimes ends up failing when he thinks for himself or doesn't side with her, he also tends to innocently flirt with his stepmother-in-law Gloria , but, they still love each other as they are in a marriage for a reason. Claire tends to refer to Phil as the "kid" she married. As much as they are lovers they are also best friends, Claire and Phil have a very loving romantic and friendly relationship:

Claire asks Phil to tell Haley what's wrong with her skirt (Claire thinks it's too short). Phil is supposed to tell Haley that it's too short, but he misunderstands Claire as he isn't listening to what she is complaining about; he is on his phone. Phil tells Haley that it looks cute, to which Haley thanks her dad and Claire looks as if she's given up on Phil. (" Pilot ") Claire and Phil dress up as their role playing characters. (photographed upper right) When Claire and Phil are going up on the escalator, Claire gets the belt that is attached to her coat stuck in the gap of one of the steps that revolve. Phil tries to help her out and fortunately accidentally trips and falls onto the 'Emergency Stop' button, which stops the escalator from continuing. A bunch of people come up to Phil and Claire who have an either friendship, acquaintance or working relationship with them, each see that Claire is stuck and offer to help her out, which Claire very badly wants to decline as she is completely naked underneath her coat for Phil. Phil then runs out to call for help, he comes back and tells everyone that help is on the way to get rid of them; he hasn't actually called for help, when he tells Claire this, she is confused as to why he didn't actually call them, which would have been a good idea. She then tells him to actually call for them. (" My Funky Valentine ")

There is a Kiss Cam at the football game and Gloria kisses Phil. Phil then begins thinking of ways to say sorry to Claire, Claire is acting up about something Phil doesn't know about and he thinks that it's the kiss cam. Phil tries to say sorry but dances around the actual thing. Claire complains at Phil but doesn't tell him what for and so Phil thinks it's the kiss cam. They both don't find out about each others problems until they pose for a family portrait, which goes horribly wrong. (" Family Portrait ")

Phil finds out, from Alex accidentally implying it, that Haley has lost her virginity to Dylan. Phil asks Claire how long she's known about it and she tells him that she known about it for 3 months, Phil then states "So this giant thing happened to our first born and you kept me in the dark about it for 3 whole months?" Claire then says she's sorry as she didn't know how he'd react. Phil then unexpectedly hugs her for not telling him as it's evident he was ready to learn about Haley and Dylan. Phil then whispers "Thank you" as he hugs her. (" Virgin Territory ")

H

Haley Dunphy is Phil's eldest daughter. He tries hard to be the cool dad with her and her brother and sister, but it only leads to her embarrassment. Phil gets emotional when he finds out that Haley has already lost her virginity and realizes that his little girl is growing up and that she is not his little girl any more. Although later Haley always reminds him that she will always be his little girl. Phil and Haley has a good father daughter relationship. though they used to be much closer. which is mentioned in episode: "See You Next Fall" when Claire says to Phil "Do you remember when you used to come home from work and Haley would meet you at the door in her little Aladdin pajamas? You know, and she'd stick her arms up in the air and say "Daddy, Daddy, take me on a magic carpet ride." "Remember that? When was the last time Haley was that excited to see you?" to which Phil replies "I don't remember."

Phil finds out, from Alex accidentally implying it, that Haley has lost her virginity to Dylan. Alex then tells Haley that she's not sure that Phil even heard her or knew what she meant. Haley then figures out that Phil knows what Alex meant and he knows that she's lost her virginity. Haley then tries to make her dad see that Haley is still Haley, just with more growing up being done to her. Haley tells her Dad that she'll always be his girl, she just isn't little anymore. (" Virgin Territory ")

Phil gives Haley his book " Philosphy " and Haley acts like she doesn't care about it and tells him that he needs to leave her dorm so she can be like the rest of the kids with normal parents which evidently upsets Phil. She rushes them to leave her so she can be a college girl. At the end of the episode we see that Haley has called her Mom up to tell her goodnight and that she loves her, which matters to Claire, and then starts to read Phils' book and we see she really loves him and misses him. (" Schooled ")

Pppppppp

Alex Dunphy is Phil's youngest daughter and middle child. He also tries to be the cool dad with her, bonding with her to solve a problem that he needs some 'smart talk' for or to talk about something else serious. However, she ends up thinking that his problems are weird as she considers him an idiot, but she still loves him nonetheless.

Alex voices a suspicion that her brother, Luke, has ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder), but all the symptoms she reads out all are shown to apply to Phil. (" Starry Night ")

Phil realizes that Walt Kleezak , who passed away, never fixed his estrangement from his daughter and he decides that he does not want the same thing to happen with himself and Alex, so he sets out with her for some great stories to replace the empty gallery of Phil-Alex moments. All his attempts to create something special (he even tries to get a woman in labor so they can help her deliver since no one else is around to do it) fail and when Alex asks him why he is acting so weird, he tells her that he just wants to create a special memory for her. Alex tells him she will always remember how her father spent the entire day trying to create a memory for her. (" The Last Walt ")

Phil went to her for advice on Luke. Alex accidentally reveals to her father that she lost her virginity at age 17. Phil was speechless at this, while she realized her error. (" Double Click ")

P

Luke Dunphy is Phil's youngest and only male child. He bases his relationship with his son on his own relationship with his father Frank - he saw his dad as a more of a buddy and close friend than a parent while growing up, and so wanted Luke to see him the same way. As they are the only two males in the family, they form an extremely close bond with each other and are often seen coming up with various schemes and ideas to try together. He cares for Luke deeply and vice versa, as in many episodes it has been shown his family love towards him. Despite having so much in common and relate very well, they don't have exactly the same likes and dislikes:

  • In " Fizbo ", it is revealed that Phil is afraid of clowns, while Luke loves them. His fear is said to stem from finding a dead clown in the woods.
  • In " The Butler's Escape ", it is shown that, despite his aptitude for magic, Luke is not interested of being a magician, which greatly disappoints Phil, because he loves magic, but he finally tells Luke that whatever he decide, he will always support him.
  • In " And One to Grow On ", Phil wants to set Luke on a dance class, which Luke dislikes, because Phil says that he comes from a long line of dancing Dunphys.

Phil has to shoot Luke with a BB gun because he shot Alex with that gun. But when he is just about to shoot Luke, Phil sees that he is scared, thinks that he has learned the lesson and he decides to not shoot him, although he accidentally ends up shooting him anyway. (" Pilot ") Phil tries to retrieve Luke's toy truck from a little space they have underneath the house, even though he is very scared of going down there. (" Fears ")

Phil reveals that of his 3 children, Luke is his favorite as he is just like him. (" The Late Show ")

Phil,jay

Jay is Phil's father-in-law. He tries really, really hard to gain approval from Jay. Jay is very stubborn at not giving him any. It is almost as if Jay doesn't like Phil at all, even though Jay tells Phil directly that he liked him. Once to Jay's dismay, he accidentally told Phil that he loved him, but Phil was too busy and didn't hear it. Jay introduces Phil as "Phil is my son-in-law," but Phil says it sounds like he is saying, "Phyllis, my son-in-law." Phil also complains that Jay says "Dumb-phy" instead of "Dunphy." Phil once fixed Jay's printer and since it is Phil's only accomplishment with Jay, Phil brings it up every chance he gets.

Jay and Phil fly a toy plane on a playing field, Jay gets annoyed with Phil talking and tells him to get into the position of a game called "Threading the Needle", in which Phil would have to run to the other side of the playing field with a hoop in his hand, he does this and Jay purposely accidentally flies the plane into Phil's face and not through the hoop. (When Jay brings Phil home, Claire tells Jay that he had to have done it on purpose reasons being: he's never liked Phil. Claire then tells him that he's done the game perfectly with his children before.) (" Come Fly with Me ")

Phil&gloria

Gloria is Phil's step-mother-in-law. He has a small and harmless crush on her, once staring at Gloria through Claire's sunglasses. Gloria is seemingly oblivious to this. Jay says nothing of it because Phil is married to his daughter and therefore knows not to cross the line. But this quickly changes back, although nonetheless he still really loves Claire.

Claire gets her belt that is attached to her coat stuck in the escalator and after quite a while Gloria and Jay appear, Jay jokingly asks Claire if she is naked underneath the coat, to which Claire, unfortunately for Jay, implies her reply: yes. Gloria helps her out and then tells her that she has been in the situation before and thus knew exactly what to do. We see Phil tell Jay that he thinks what Gloria did was impressive, Jay gets a hint of flirtation from Phil and tells him to take it down a notch, calling him Clive. (" My Funky Valentine ") There is a kiss cam at the football game and Gloria kisses Phil.

Jay makes Phil stay at his house with Gloria, Phil accepts it after Gloria tells him "I do Jay why can't I do you?" when she is talking about hairdressing, Phil knows what she is talking about however he can also relate it to a sexual reference towards him. We later see Gloria doing Phil's hair with her chest all up in his face, Gloria tells him to hold his head still and Phil tells her that he is just a little tense, Gloria takes a break from cutting his hair and bends down and prompts him to open up about Claire. As he opens up about Claire she gets back up and puts her chest back in his face. (" Regrets Only ")

Phil teaches Gloria how to skate. (" My Hero ")

Phil,manny

Manny is Phil's step-brother-in-law by marriage twice: Phil is married to Claire but Claire's Dad is married to Gloria, Manny's mother. Phil and Manny has only had a handful of proper moments alone together but when they've had moments with other people in the room, Phil treats him almost like a son instead of a brother-in-law, which he is.

Phil,mitch

Mitchell is Phil's brother-in-law, but they think of each other as the brother they never had. They do not typically share the spotlight, but when they do, there is a focus on their shared love for the sci-fi/fantasy genre. Phil is highly toxic in his interactions with Mitchell, and is more than comfortable with throwing Mitchell under the bus so that he appears as the good guy, as evident in Tableau Vivant and Diamond in the Rough . Mitchell, with a clearer conscience, never behaves that way. Instead, he stands up for Phil when Phil is being mistreated, such as in Clash of Swords . The shameless Phil then takes credit of the convention-goers' acceptance of him, claiming it was because of his "pure of heart". He fails to realise that the only "pure of heart" there is Mitchell. Should their roles be reversed, Phil would have no qualms with letting Mitch be hated by the convention attendees as long as he is accepted and liked.

Phil drives Mitchell to retrieve his wallet, which he forgot at home in all the chaos. (" Airport 2010 ")

Mitch tries to tell Phil that his jokes for the SCARB (Southern California Annual Realtors Banquet) are unfunny, but Mitch can't go through it after seeing Phil's sad face and eventually ends up telling him that he is "this generation's Richard Pryor." (" Strangers on a Treadmill ")

Phil has to find a way to tell Mitch that he is fired from his unpaid job at the real estate agency that he did as a favor to the ungrateful Phil. When Phil goes to Mitch's house to tell him about his dismissal, Mitch also tries to tell him that he does not want to continue working at the estate agency. The message did not get received by either party. When Mitch appears at the agency later, Phil is prompted by his need to suck up to his office mates and brutally breaks the news to Mitch, acting as though he has the upper hand when Mitch himself also wanted to leave. Mitch is then stuck in the elevator for two hours knowing he has been fired. Phil, displaying clear symptoms of having being neglected as a child hence his ridiculous need to please people by throwing close relatives under the bus for his own gain, leans into his office mates' dislike of Mitchell, instead of defending his brother-in-law – who would actually do that in Clash of Swords . He also later fails to show remorse for his appalling behaviour, not even apologising to Mitchell for embarrassing him, but instead badgers him for his parking pass. (" Tableau Vivant ")

Claire and Cam want to try their hand at flipping a house, and Phil and Mitchell fight over who will be the bad guy to tell them no. Phil manipulates the extremely gullible Claire and Cam to believe that Mitchell is the one against their idea and that he is completely on board, when in truth he, too, dislikes their idea but is just using Mitch as his shield so that he would remain likeable at Mitch's expense. Claire and Cam finally find out what they were trying to do, and get really mad at their significant others. (" Diamond in the Rough ") Phil's mother, Grace Dunphy , dies and Mitchell goes to Florida with the rest of the family for the funeral. When they arrive, Mitchell tells Phil that he's sorry and hugs him. (" Goodnight Gracie ")

Phil and Mitchell go to see a movie, "Defenders of Infinity", but never actually got to see the movie. This is because the smoke alarm goes off at the Dunphy house, prompting them to go home right after they eat pot gummy bears Phil's friend gave them. This made them high while in the presence of their family. (" The Party ")

Phil and Mitchell attend Hero-Con dressed as their favorite characters from the fantasy series "Clash of Swords". While there, Phil unsurprisingly brings misfortune to his surroundings, and unlike his own tendency to throw close relatives under the bus for his own gain, Mitchell actually saves him from the convention-goers' hatred while risking ostracization as well. Phil, in a true mark of his stupidity, later deems the attendees' acceptance of him as a result of him being "pure of heart.” (" Clash of Swords ")

Phil,cam

Cameron is Phil's other brother-in-law due to Cameron marrying Mitchell after it was legalised for gays to marry. Unlike Mitch and Phil, Cam and Phil rarely had any brotherly moments but there are a few.

While Jay, Mitch and Claire laughed at Cameron who fell numerous times, Phil instead showed compassion and asked him if he was okay. (" See You Next Fall ") When Phil's mother, Grace Dunphy dies, the family fly to Florida. Cam tells Phil that his mother was such a " kind and whimsical soul " . (" Goodnight Gracie ") Phil supported Cameron when he was described as an hypersensitive character. Phil told him that it is one of his greatest qualities. (" Farm Strong ")

Phil and Cameron practised racketball. After a near death experience, Phil decided to become a type of action guy and helped Cameron to get a new dryer. However, Cameron felt attracted by Phil and wondered if he now somehow thought he was sexy. His new feelings disappeared when Phil's new personality went too far and Cameron thanked him to made him appreciate Mitchell, as he, at least, wasn't crazy. (" The Day We Almost Died ")

Phil and Cameron discover that they share an interest. They love Simon Hasting's polar books, but when they prevent him from write his story, they try to recreate a synopsis. Two weeks later, Phil sends his fiction to Cam, who rejects it. (" Crazy Train ") Phil and Cameron practised dance with their spouses. But because the teacher greeted them, they believed that they had to fire Mitchell and Claire and try to dance just without them which did not work. (" Wine Weekend ") Phil and Cameron were ready to reassure their spouses after Dede's passing. Both were searching ice creams but got stuck in the traffic and reminisced about Dede while eating. (" Good Grief ")

Other Family [ ]

Frank Dunphy

Phil,frank

Frank Dunphy is Phil's father, he is also the only member of Phil's family who has ever appeared on-screen throughout the entire show is his father Frank who has appeared in every season except Seasons 2 and 3 . He is a very cheerful and happy man and Phil always saw him as a friend rather than a parent when growing up. They are shown to have a very close relationship and Phil does the same thing with his son Luke. Frank also seems to have passed his cheerfulness on to his son which is likely the reason of why he is so goofy and childlike.

{{Heading|h4|[[Grace Dunphy}}

Grace Dunphy is Phil's mother, she hasn't ever appeared on the show in any way. But it is revealed by Claire that she died in the finale of Season 4 from what seems to have been in her sleep. She and Phil appeared to have been very close.

( Phil is also an only child, thus he doesn't have siblings. In " Australia ", Phil mentions that a great-grandfather (grandfather of his mother's) of his was Australian. )

The Best Phil Dunphy Moments On Modern Family

Ty Burrell as Phil Dunphy from Modern Family

When you think of  Modern Family , you think of Phil Dunphy. Of course, you also think of the show's creative family structures and its exploration of intersecting values, lifestyles, and personal histories, depicted with humor and affection. But be honest: At some point shortly before or after you reflect upon the show's depth, you think about Phil.

Now, Phil isn't the first name that comes to mind in terms of character development — but look closer, and you'll find an understated depth to Phil's contentment with exactly who he is. This is not to say that Phil doesn't move forward over the course of the show: He works hard to cultivate connections with his children and make his wife feel cared for, even if he doesn't always pick the most practical or successful ways of doing so. Fundamentally, however, when it comes to Phil, what you see is what you get. He encapsulates the quiet profundity of doing your best and believing doggedly in what's possible (and a little bit of what's impossible, or at least ill-advised). His repeated failures and gaffes aren't just comic relief, but evidence of his optimism, which ultimately holds his family together. We're here to celebrate that steadfast kindness with this list of Phil Dunphy's best moments.

Phil's-osophy 101: Of lemons and lemonade

Phil's-osophy , "a hard-bound collection of all the lessons [he's] learned," featured prominently in the episode "Schooled," is just about all you need to get through life. Not because this self-published volume is filled with wisdom, but because it will make you laugh, make you think, and remind you not to take any of it too seriously.

Phil's-osophy manages to do all of this without any sort of contrived drama. You don't have to wonder what sordid backstory illuminated these "deep truths about life," because it's pretty obvious that most of them probably just popped into his head at random. Consider this nugget of truth, courtesy of Phil's-osophy : When life gives you lemonade, make lemons so that life will be like, "Whaaaat?"

Goofy? Yes. But Phil's-osophy  also offers some surprisingly ingenious solutions to life's problems. Phil notes that you should always look people in the eye, but recognizes a serious roadblock to that tenet: What if the person is blind? You should still look them in the eye, Phil explains. To achieve the desired effect, simply say, "I'm looking you in the eye." Now that's one to grow on.

Clive Bixby, the speaker-designing spy

Phil refers to himself as a "cool dad" (that's his "thang"), but the thermometer swings to hot hubby when he appears as Clive Bixby, his sensual alter ego. Bixby is a successful businessman who designs high-end electro-acoustic transducers. Phil himself consistently demonstrates an interest in technology and inventiveness, and shares Bixby's tendency to stray into unintentional innuendos while trying to be cool. In Phil's mind, however, Bixby's coolness is rarely compromised, no matter what kind of awkward situation he ends up in.

Phil created Bixby to go on Valentine's dates with Claire as Julianna, a bored housewife with a dark side. Their attempts at role play are often foiled, however. The first time Bixby introduces himself, Claire loses her coat (under which she has removed all of her clothes in an attempt at spicing up the seduction) on an escalator. The next time, a mix-up causes Phil to narrowly avoid arrest after greeting an old woman in her hotel room naked among scattered rose petals — a gesture meant for Claire. Despite all this, or perhaps because of it, Bixby and Julianna's adventures still make for a sweet expression of love — and a tribute to the raw magnetism of speaker salesmen.

From goofy to spooky

Phil states in the episode "Fizbo" that he has a complicated relationship with clowns — and this comes from an episode from 2009, way before the mystifying rash of clown sightings in 2016! Phil's aversion to Fizbo the clown does offer him the chance to bond with Mitch: Mitch overhears Phil whispering to himself, "It's just Cam, it's just Cam," in an attempt to soothe his anxiety over the presence of the clown. Mitch empathizes with Phil's discomfort, saying that he, too, has a "complicated relationship" with Fizbo — more specifically, with Cam as Fizbo.

Fizbo repeatedly denies any knowledge of someone named Cam, which only feeds Phil's pathological fear. To make things worse, he later plays a part in the disastrous events of the episode's party, further traumatizing Phil. This episode serves the narrative that Phil is essentially a big kid. But he really tries to grow up, attempting an "exposure therapy" of sorts by dressing up as Fizbo himself, to confront his fear head-on. It doesn't go well.

Phil's "not a real man"

While Phil's relationship with his father-in-law may be strained, the two do share a few begrudgingly heartfelt moments on their path to an amicable relationship. One of the best is from "Snip," when Jay has to chase after Phil when he runs away from his vasectomy, having seen someone else's operation take a less-than-stellar turn.

Phil appears to be worried about not being a "real man." Jay thinks Phil is referring to the emasculation of getting the vasectomy itself. Really, though, Phil is talking about his fear of the pain of the vasectomy, worrying that his anxiety means he's a wimp. In a not-exactly-tender but still sort of touching moment, Jay reassures him. This is all set off by a great visual gag: Phil sits down on a bench bearing one of his advertisements, but the way his torso covers up some of the letters makes it seem like the ad says "not a real man."

"Oh no."

If Phil had an official catchphrase, "oh no" would be a strong contender for the title. You might expect to hear it more from other family members about Phil: He's so happy-go-lucky and optimistic that he's often unaware of his own blunders. But we see him get impatient from time to time, or find himself "up a tree" due to one or another ill-fated exploits.

Consider the time Phil forgets how to walk and gets stuck on an escalator in "The Old Man and the Tree." Some of Phil's best "oh no" moments come from this episode, in which he has to stair-walk the distance to Canada in order to keep the Stairmaster in the bedroom. He completes the challenge, but as a result, forgets how to walk normally. The problem escalates when he begins to walk up a broken escalator and it then starts up again. "Oh no" is putting it mildly. Consider also the season two episode "Chirp," in which the smoke alarm in the house keeps beeping, and Phil can't figure out the source of the sound. He utters a frustrated "oh no" every time it happens.

Phil and Jay's toast in "The Storm"

This toast is a moment of quiet, bittersweet understanding and vulnerability between Phil and his father-in-law. It's also an awesome example of Phil's character development. True to his values, his maturation is most evident in his relationships with others rather than in personal revelations and triumphs. His connections with his family are what he holds most dear and puts the most effort into.

Throughout this episode, Phil has attempted to prove his ability to take care of everything in a crisis in an effort to present himself as a "real man." While his overcompensation, as usual, makes things worse rather than better, Gloria points out that his particular strength is in making people feel comfortable around him and allowing them the space to open up. Later in the episode, Jay does just that, admitting to Phil that one of his Navy friends has passed away and he's upset about missing a toast in his old comrade's honor due to the storm. Phil pours Jay a shot in silence and turns to leave, but Jay calls him back for a second drink, reaffirming Phil's character as a presence you'd like to have around in a crisis — not to fix things, but to comfort you when things can't be fixed.

Phil's-osophy 201: Advanced Amazement

One of Phil's best "osophies" is the assurance that the most amazing thing that can happen to a human will happen to you ... if you just lower your expectations. At first, this adage appears to be a bit of a bleak take on life. It makes it seem like you are cursed to accept less than what you really want and will never know true satisfaction. He can also be heard counseling people to "marry someone who looks sexy disappointed." What a bummer.

But really, it's also kind of sweet. The most magical part of this is that Phil doesn't even think to consider a morose interpretation. All he can see is the endless possibility for happiness that exists in every moment, as long as you don't ask too much of it and just allow it to be as it is. This is, in fact, a pretty wholesome reflection of his ability to make both the best and the worst of any situation. And if you think about it, applying this philosophy to our understanding of human beings is what allows us to love Phil as much as we do. He keeps our expectations low and manages to constantly, in one way or another, amaze us.

Ever the innovator in the face of an obstacle, Phil hovers around the house on a roving screen in "American Skyper" because he can't be there for Alex's graduation. It's pretty fitting, because he's always had an affinity for technology ... even if tends to be a love-hate relationship. He may not know all the texting lingo ("wtf" doesn't mean "why the face," unfortunately, but it's very on-brand for someone who seeks to uplift everyone he can and doesn't see the point in getting down) but he sure is eager to try the latest thing regardless.

Behold Phil's wish list, after Claire tells him he's impossible to shop for: Robot dog, night vision goggles, bug vacuum, GPS watch, and speakers that look like rocks. Not a single non-electronic item on the list. With his acrobatic background and technological affinities, in another life, he might have been Batman. His comment on a new Apple product says it best: "The iPad comes out on my actual birthday. It's like Steve Jobs and God got together to say, 'We love you, Phil.'"

Warm heart > cool dad

Phil chasing after Haley in "Party Crasher," after their relationship has become strained, is an incredibly sweet moment that showcases yet another area of growth for Phil. As much as he wants to be a "cool dad," he is always going to want what's best for his daughters more. Sometimes his love for his family can get in the way of actually sharing that love with them, especially when it manifests as being protective or disappointed.

Here, though, Haley opens up to her mother about how she can tell, every time she sees his face, how much of a disappointment she is to him. At that moment, Phil arrives after chasing her and the boyfriend he detests. Without seeing her, he launches into a tirade about how she is his little girl and no guy will ever be good enough for her, and in one moment, by virtue of his pure intentions and unadulterated emotional honesty, he breaks down a barrier that has caused hurt in their relationship for a long time. Normally, the things he does on accident are goofy and awkward. But while being genuine, sensitive, and a little naive make him anything but a "cool dad," they are ultimately what makes him a great one.

Phil the stripper

Phil often reminds us that, for all his flaws, he's a great example of an emotionally involved father. It's something that's very important to him: "I always felt bad for people with emotionally distant fathers," Phil muses in "Travels with Scout," "Turns out I'm one of them. It's a miracle I didn't end up a stripper."

It's a funny thing to imagine, but consider: He probably would have been pretty good at it, given his penchant for acrobatics and his performative personality. Not to mention his comfort with stereotypically feminine behaviors and activities.

But Phil is, in the end, a far cry from a stripper — though maybe Clive Bixby could pull it off as a weekend gig, Magic Mike style. Neither Phil nor his kids are perfect, but he's a simple, loving, goofy guy and a quintessential dad. He doesn't let anything define his role as a father except the wholehearted, if sometimes misguided efforts he makes day in and day out.

Fearlessness

Phil's masculinity is constantly called into question, usually by Jay's not-totally-friendly joking, but also by his wife, family members, and even himself. He notes, however, that he's seen Ghostbusters "like, seven times" and regularly drives through "neighborhoods that have only recently been gentrified." Through Phil's eyes, we see how innocently microscopic someone's worldview can be. But Phil isn't totally blind — even if he may make an insensitive comment now and then.

Phil is the definition of "off in your own world," because his world is the place that makes sense to him. In his world, you can be a cheerleader who's also a capable husband and a "cool dad." You can invent anything and attempt anything. You can love your children to the best of your ability and have it be enough. And you can watch  Ghostbusters whenever you want without batting an eye. Phil reminds us that bravery comes in many forms, and they are unique to the person and the situation.

Phil's "ABCs" of real estate

Yet again, we see Phil inventing a learning tool that goes above and beyond what anyone might expect. He takes it upon himself to come up with not only the ABCs of real estate , all the way through Z. Well, sort of — he claims that he always forgets what X stands for, but maybe he never came up with it to begin with. Or maybe he's full of surprises and knows some obscure Scrabble "X" words.

Whether he's an expert scholar or not, a compilation of Phil Dunphy's resources on life and real estate would be a modern-day library of Alexandria. That might be over-selling it, but then, he's in the business of sales. And he owes all of his success to his commitment to Always Be Closing ... Don't Ever Forget, Great Home Ideas Just Keep Lurking, you get the idea. And therein lies another contender for the official slogan of Phil Dunphy: Ideas just keep lurking. Most of them aren't good, but they keep coming, and that's a pretty great approach to life.

Athleticism

Phil is an athlete — but not in the ways one might expect of a dad. He was a cheerleader in college, and it has informed much of his wisdom. You might laugh, but the proof is in the proverbs: His quote about how a pyramid without practice would just be 10 obituaries is surprisingly insightful and genuinely pithy. You can also find Phil in various states of cardio or contortion: He power walks, uses the Shake Weight, and in an especially impressive and very Phil-like moment, is inspired by  Man on Wire  to walk a tightrope. Doing so also allows him to accidentally (as usual) teach an unspoken lesson to his children about the simple virtues of being yourself. Phil keeps the blood flowing, and he does it in his own way. Who cares if people think he looks silly doing it? He knows being a male cheerleader is cool, and he makes you believe it too.

10 Times Phil Dunphy Deserved Better On 'Modern Family'

Phil Dunphy was the Best Dunphy.

Very seldom do fans come across a male character on TV who is smart, caring, affectionate and just a good guy at heart with no ill will towards anyone. Phil Dunphy on Modern Family really broke the mold when it came to being a good husband, father and friend. A family man through and through, Phil always came through when his people needed him and undoubtedly, was an ideal husband to Claire Dunphy.

From being a tumbling and magic enthusiast to being a successful realtor, he turned his life around for the sake of his family and provided for them in the toughest of times. While the show is as progressive as it gets, there were a few characters who made life a little too difficult for our beloved character.

When Jay Hit Him With The Model Airplane

Jay ( Ed O'Neil ) has been known to hold a grudge against Phil ever since the show began. He believed Phil was never good enough for his baby girl Claire and regretted her marrying him. Despite having a cordial relationship on the surface, Jay never truly accepted Phil as one of his own. The model airplane incident bears witness to this fact.

While Phil is over the moon as he tags along with Jay to try out a fabulous model plane, Jay returns the favor by flying the plane right into Phil’s face. On top of that, he strives to make sure his plane is alright without batting an eye on Phil and his pain.

When Claire Hides His Index Cards For The Realtor’s Banquet

Claire ( Julie Bowen ) has never really appreciated everything Phil stands for, whether it’s his love for magic and cheerleading or his humor that sets him apart. But as usual, she does not have the heart to say that to his face and instead chooses deceitful means to let Phil steer clear of embarrassment.

Claire enlists Mitch’s ( Jesse Tyler Ferguson ) help to not let Phil make his speech full of jokes that according to her, won’t work for the crowd. When that doesn’t work, Claire ends up stealing his index cards which clearly implies how little she thinks of Phil and his abilities. In the end, Phil improvises the speech and gets awarded in laughter and applause by everyone in the audience.

When Manny Accidentally Tasers Him

When the family realizes that they won’t be able to be together on Christmas this year, they gear up to celebrate Express Christmas on December 16. Everyone divides errands and goes off in groups to get the task done. Manny accompanies Phil in getting a mint condition baseball card, a thoughtful gift for his father-in-law Jay.

Even though they don’t see eye to eye, Phil wanted to do something special for Jay and get him something meaningful. The situation goes haywire when Manny freaks out and accidentally zaps Phil. The spasms make Phil crush the card, leaving it disfigured.

When Gloria And Haley Bail On Him

Phil is super excited to host a seminar that can help first-time house buyers in making the right decisions. He asks Gloria and Haley to help as Claire is busy with Luke’s egg project. After a trial run, Gloria and Haley go for mani-pedis before the seminar begins, but their car gets towed.

At the venue, disaster ensues as Phil has to introduce himself and go through the cards in a hurry and nobody is there to ask a question that gets him to his main point. Understandably, he gets mad at Gloria and Haley as they let him down.

When Claire Goes To Her College Reunion Without Him

Claire decided to go to her college reunion without her main man by her side. She saw this as the perfect opportunity to get back in touch with some of her old lovers and relive her adventurous life. Fans saw Phil heading to heartbreak avenue as he realizes his wife is embarrassed by him and does not want her college friends to know who she married.

In the end, Claire sees how her old flame has turned out and how distraught his wife is. She realizes her errors and feels better about choosing Phil as her life partner.

All The Times His Kids Were Embarrassed By Him

Phil is the coolest dad on the block. Since the first episode, he has tried his best to be hip and in trend for the sake of his kids. It is heartbreaking to see his kids be embarrassed by him despite him being way cooler than most dads (including Jay).

He accompanied Haley to college, surprised Alex on campus, and sent Luke off to high school. But Phil's kids seem to be unappreciative of everything he does and how much he cares for them.

When Gil Ruins His Career Day Speech

For Luke’s career day, parents were invited to give a speech and talk about their respective careers. Phil sets up a very hip presentation in which he plays the role of a young aspiring realtor. His nemesis, Gil Thorpe interrupts him and throws him off his timing. The presentation ends up being a bust and Phil is unable to get his point across.

Phil was very excited to be a part of this day as Haley and Alex never invited him. Phil wanted to put his best foot forward and shine brighter for his son.

When The Ducks Imprinted On Claire Instead Of Him

As an apology for leaving him to be with his friends, Luke brings the ducks’ eggs from the unsellable house and gives them to Phil. He graciously accepts the gift and goes on to take care of them like a Mother Duck.

After weeks of hard work and intense nursing, the eggs hatch and ducklings are born. But as Phil says, “through some sick fluke” Claire was the only one there when the ducks were born, and they imprinted on her. Phil definitely deserves better here and even tried further to get them transferred on him.

When Claire Ruins His AwesomeLand

Claire being a hard-core Halloween fan is one of the running gags on Modern Family. She always goes above and beyond to make the festival increasingly spooky. When she is caught up with work one Halloween, Phil is entrusted with the responsibility to make the festival special.

He decides to make his dream come true and create an AwesomeLand where everything is happy and dreamy. Claire comes back only to crush his spirits and stomp on his lifelong dream by ruining AwesomeLand and making it a haunted house, yet again.

All The Times Jay Was Mean To Him

Jay Prichett has been the OG mean girl in Phil’s life. Everything he does is either to demean Phil or make him feel inferior when all Phil does is prove his worth to him. There have been innumerable incidents on the show where Jay has degraded Phil or made fun of him carelessly. He called him Phil Dumphy, insulted him in front of his friends and always made him feel not good enough.

Even Claire has noticed these errors and complains how her father never made an effort to welcome her husband into the family. Jay could have done it all in fun and games, but his words must have cut through Phil like daggers and left him grief-stricken.

Phil Dunphy highlighted his Realtor® experience on “Modern Family”

By Kevin Juliano, CAE, RCE | May 5, 2016 | 2 min. read

On last night’s episode of ABC’s “ Modern Family “, Phil Dunphy showcased his experience as a member of the National Association of Realtors®.

In past episodes, Gloria set up, and now runs, a small business focused on her mother’s sauce recipe. In the episode that aired on Wednesday, May 4, Gloria determined that a competitor stole her sauce recipe and has copied it. She called on Phil to help.

Phil and Gloria confronted the sauce thief in the local grocery store. The thief claimed that she was only involved in the promotion of the sauce, and had nothing to do with the sauce’s production.

Dejected, Phil and Gloria left. Phil gave a passionate speech about his occupation being so “boring” that he was bumped from career day. Gloria commended Phil for his job as a real estate agent. However, Phil stopped Gloria and corrected her.

“First of all, I’m not just a real estate agent. I’m a Realtor®. I’m a member of a national association,” Dunphy explained. Phil continued by stating as a Realtor®, he’s bound by the Realtor® Code of Ethics and that is what his Realtor® pin represents.

Later in the episode, the duo decided to confront the sauce thief once again. This time at her home.

After the thief confessed to her crime, she explained that she patented the recipe so there was nothing Phil and Gloria could do. But interactions with the thief’s grandson led Phil to piece together a history of the home. View Phil’s analysis below.

Realtors are just your everyday superheroes, NBD. https://t.co/r22zalj5Rc — Modern Family (@ModernFam) May 5, 2016

As she realized her act was up, the sauce thief exclaimed, “How do you know all of this? Are you some kind of real estate agent?” Gloria shot back with “No! He’s a Realtor®! There’s a difference somehow.”

In all, Phil’s recognition as a Realtor® received under five minutes of air-time on “Modern Family”. But educating consumers on the difference between real estate agents and Realtors® is timeless.

“Modern Family” has won 21 Primetime Emmy Awards including Outstanding Comedy Series since 2010.

Modern Family: 10 Funniest Phil'sosophies

  • "Dance Until Your Feet Hurt, Sing Until Your Lungs Hurt, Act Until You're William Hurt." Phil's quirky life advice is both funny and insightful.
  • Phil's humor and love for his family shine through in his unique advice.
  • "Key To A Good Birthday? Low Expectations." Phil's philosophy on setting realistic expectations is both heartwarming and humorous.

In the fourth season of Modern Family , Phil (Ty Burrell) and Claire (Julie Bowen) pack up Haley's (Sarah Hyland) things and move her to college. It was a big day for the Dunphy clan because no one imagined Haley would make it there. Modern Family had followed the Dunphy family since Haley was a freshman in high school, watching the kids grow up alongside their extended family's shenanigans. Part of watching the younger characters grow up was seeing education milestones, like Haley leaving for college, play out.

Watch on Hulu

The Dunphy family was filled with jitters but Phil and Claire were prepared in their own ways: Claire gave Haley a box of condoms while Phil wrote a book called Phil'sosophy. In his book, he wrote things Haley needed to remember to get through life unscathed. These are mottos that Phil lives by and has preached throughout various episodes. Haley thought the book was weird at first but ended up smiling while reading it before bed. It looks like Phil has some pretty unique philosophies ...

These phil'sosophies are revealed in Season 4, Episode 2 "Schooled" of Modern Family .

"Dance Until Your Feet Hurt, Sing Until Your Lungs Hurt, Act Until You're William Hurt."

William hurt previously played thaddeus ross in the marvel cinematic universe.

This life motto is very Phil Dunphy . Using a play on words is right up his alley. Surprisingly, he didn't use a play on words for actor Kevin Bacon. Nevertheless, William Hurt has been in movies like Into The Wild , A History of Violence , Broadcast News, and much more. Haley is used to acting a certain way to get herself out of trouble, so this advice isn't bad. If only she remembered this philsosophy when she got arrested and kicked out of college.

10 Best Modern Family Episodes, Ranked

"take a lesson from parakeets. if you're ever feeling lonely, just eat in front of a mirror.", this philsosophy plays on haley's active social life.

This advice is hilarious but rather sad as well. Haley was starting fresh and attending a school where she didn't know anyone. She was used to being a popular girl with multiple friends and boyfriends to fall back on, but in college, she started at the bottom of the social scene.

Seeing Haley eat alone in her school's cafeteria was a big change for viewers — and quite frankly, rather heartbreaking. It is doubtful that Haley would be able to eat in front of a mirror without admiring her hair or makeup, but this is advice Alex could have used when she went to Caltech.

"Key To A Good Birthday? Low Expectations."

Phil says this in season 1, episode 19 "game changer".

To be fair, this exact advice isn't in his book. Instead, this quote comes from a season 1 episode in which Phil is hoping to celebrate his birthday with a new iPad, which is being released on the same day. The episode also provides one of the best Phil Dunphy quotes in which he believes Steve Jobs is telling him he loves him with the release of the iPad. Unfortunately, his birthday didn't entirely meet his expectations.

This phils'osophy took the quote's place: " The most amazing things that can happen to a human being will happen to you if you just lower your expectations ." It appears that Phil has had some heartbreaks over the years from having high expectations, and he didn't want Haley to suffer the same pain. As a dad, he's simply passing on life's lessons to his first daughter .

"Watch A Sunrise At Least Once A Day."

Luke reveals this philsosophies.

Phil wants his children to watch a sunrise at least once a day. This is hilarious because the sun does, in fact, rise only once a day. His children are also never up early enough to watch the sunrise —except for, perhaps, Alex if she's studying.

Seeing Luke read his dad's Phil'sosophies is charming because he's a mini-Phil himself. He probably didn't even realize the sun only rose once a day, making him really think about the idea.

35 Funniest Modern Family Episodes To Watch Over And Over

"if you love something, set it free. unless it's a tiger.", this philsosophy puts a spin on an old adage.

The quote " If you love something, set it free, " has been around for centuries. It's one of those mottos that's incredibly hard to do because no one wants to leave something they love. Phil learns this the hard way when Alex goes to school. He realizes Luke is growing up too, and he's getting to that age where hanging with his dad isn't cool anymore.

Phil stumbles upon duck eggs and decides to raise them himself as a way to be a new dad again. It's not until the ducks are older that he realizes he needs to let the birds out of the nest and spread their wings — just like his children.

"If You Get Pulled Over For Speeding, Tell The Policeman Your Spouse Has Diarrhea."

Claire does not appreciate this philsosophy.

It's not known if Phil has ever used this philsosophy, but considering he put it in his book for his children to live by, he most likely did. The look on Claire's face says it all. What's humiliating to Claire isn't necessarily humiliating to Phil. In fact, there are plenty of things Claire is embarrassed by when it comes to Phil's personality, but others find him hilarious and charming.

She ends up feeling bad that she second-guesses him and realizes she's in the wrong. She did this in the episode "Strangers On A Treadmill" when she hid Phil's notecards for the SCARB awards.

"Marry Someone Who Looks Sexy While Disappointed."

This philsosophy appears to apply to claire.

As often as Claire judges Phil for his choices, she obviously loves and adores her husband. She's made it clear in a few episodes that they have a healthy romantic life, and she becomes tense when they don't make love enough.

Seeing how Claire is both beautiful and disappointed regularly, Phil follows his own philsosophy . The only thing is, it doesn't seem like Haley did. It's not often that Dylan is disappointed . Confused, yes. But disappointed? No.

Modern Family: 10 Iconic Quotes That Perfectly Sum Up Phil & Claire's Relationship

"you can tell a lot about a person by his biography.", gloria reveals this philsosophy.

" You can tell a lot about a person from his biography " is self-explanatory, which is why it's hilarious. Phil definitely talked these philsosophies over with his own dad before publishing them for his children, because this kind of humor is their style. Gloria seemed unimpressed when reading Phil's words to live by, which only made the moment funnier.

"When Life Gives You Lemonade, Make Lemons. Life Will Be All Like 'What?!'"

This philsosophy puts a spin on an old saying.

This has to be one of the most quoted lines throughout the entire series. The way Phil reads it is genius. It's clear Phil found this expression hilarious and wanted his children to have the same playful outlook on life.

Phil is the ultimate dreamer. He works hard, but he doesn't do anything unless he loves it. He's a great realtor because he loves everything there is about real estate. And he's a great dad because he acts like a kid himself . He even told Luke that if he could go into another lifetime, he would be roommates with Luke, so they could do everything together. His love for life (and lemonade) is infectious.

"Never Be Afraid To Reach For The Stars, Because Even If You Fall, You'll Always Be Wearing A Parentchute™."

This is the philsosophy that makes haley smile.

Whenever Phil thinks of a new invention or word, he adds the ™ at the end for the full effect. He wants the world to know that it was an independent thought and that he's working on trademarking it all. Over the years, Phil and Luke have created some pretty wild inventions. There was the pancake flipper, the head-scratcher, the wear-chair... Phil is a man who wears many hats and wants his children to never stop reaching for the stars.

Though Phil might be a little cheesy, and his inventions might not always work, this philsosophy is the one that makes Haley laugh when she flips through the book her dad gave her . Phil is a good dad who does understand what his kids need, even if he doesn't always get it right the first time in Modern Family .

Modern family: 5 best rivalries (& 5 that make no sense).

Modern Family is all about the highs and lows of a big family, and that means intense rivalries exist both within and without the main family.

With  Modern Family on air for more than eleven years, there were bound to be many conflicts that arose between the characters — they are one big family after all. There have also been many rivalries outside the circle, which have provided the viewers with much comedy and drama.

RELATED:  Modern Family: 10 Most Hated Supporting Characters, Ranked

However, do you ever look back and think some of these rivalries make no sense? Did the writers just include them to make a couple of filler episodes or for something more? From Cam and Senor Kaplan's to Luke and Manny's, keep reading to discover what the 5 best rivalries are (& what 5 didn't work).

Worst: Alex And Sanjay

For years, fans heard that Alex and Sanjay had engaged in an academic rivalry, where they competed to get awards and finish on top of the class. This rivalry extended into high school, where Alex and Sanjay competed against each other to be their year's valedictorian.

However, this rivalry then turned romantic when Sanjay admitted that he had feelings for Alex - which she admitted to having all of a sudden aswell ("Patriot Games"). Of course, fans knew that the relationship wouldn't last with the two at different colleges and their intuition was proven right when Sanjay cheated on her. It just seemed like a last-minute decision to give Alex a storyline.

Best: Cam And Señor Kaplan

One of the show's newest rivalries occurred between Cam and Señor Kaplan, which started after the football coach had usurped Kaplan's role as their favorite faculty member. However, tensions between the two increased after Kaplan and Cam engage in a dance-off, which Cam ended up winning.

The relationship between the two didn't improve either when Kaplan decides to get revenge on Cam in the episode "Spring Break". Here, Kaplan makes it look as if Cam was trying to hurt him to avoid public embarrassment. He also takes pleasure in Cam's humiliation, which causes the two to fight after Gloria turns his mic on to reveal the truth.

Worst: Claire And Gloria

Although Claire and Gloria are close now, at the very beginning their relationship was tense and a little hostile. Claire has often been intimidated by Gloria because of her good looks and appearance. She also struggled with the age gap between the Columbian and her father, particularly as Gloria is younger than her.

RELATED:  Modern Family: 5 Couples That Are Perfect Together (& 5 That Make No Sense)

However, this tension exploded in "Coal Digger" when Claire and Gloria fight over their kids. As they settle their differences, Luke then reveals he overheard Claire saying she believed Gloria to be a "Gold Digger", which reignites the argument that Claire doesn't like her. If Claire would have spent some time with Gloria beforehand, then maybe this could have been avoided.

Best: Luke And Lily

The rivalry between Luke and Lily has to be one of the most relatable of all. With Luke being the youngest member of the Dunphy-Pritchett-Tuckers, he is used to all the attention being focused on him. Therefore, when Lily officially becomes a member, Luke naturally feels threatened.

It is only until "When Good Kids Go Bad" do fans see the rivalry begin, with Luke insisting their conflict "wasn't over" after Lily shoves him after Cam gave him some attention. From here onwards, the viewers are then able to hear Luke's comments on what an emotional monster she is. It's like a classic sibling rivalry.

Worst: Sal And Lily

The rivalry between Sal and Lily is one no one fully understands. Similar to the one she has with Luke, Lily competes with Sal for the affections of Mitch and Cam . However, does nobody else think that it is stupid for a grown woman to be acting jealous over the attention her best friends show their child?

Especially after Sal became a mother herself and knows how priorities change. Although their scenes are entertaining, this rivalry would have been stopped immediately in the real world because no one would allow their child to be insulted by a friend and they wouldn't allow their child to be disrespectful. It doesn't make any sense.

Best: Jay And Earl

The title for longest rivalry on the show belongs to former best friends, Jay and Earl. The conflict between the two businessmen began before the airing of mockumentary, with Jay revealing that Earl had simply up and left him one day after bad-mouthing him to the rest of the office.

RELATED:  Modern Family: 5 Best Friendships (& 5 Worst)

Since then, there had been a deep resentment between the two, with the pair trying to sabotage each other's businesses. It got so bad that their rivalry extended into their family, with Earl trying to drive a wedge between Jay and Mitch, and Jay using Manny to "vandalize" Earl's home. It's a shame there wasn't resolved in the end.

Worst: Gloria And DeDe

A weird rivalry that occurs on the show is between Gloria and DeDe. It's not like viewers don't understand why the relationship is always strained since DeDe is Jay's ex-wife. But why do they keep interacting with her when DeDe proves to be a toxic influence.

She causes a scene at Gloria and Jay's wedding, and ruins Lily's birthday party by attacking Gloria too. Gloria didn't hold back her personal feelings as she admits in "Good Grief" that she had used DeDe's toothbrush on Stella because of the way she was treated.

Best: Gloria And Sonia

Probably one of the funniest rivalries in the show has to go to Gloria and Sonia. This all started in the episode "Fulgencio" when Gloria and Sonia come to blows after Jay revealed that he was initially interested in the younger Ramirez sister.

Since Sonia has believed that Gloria had stolen her life, she has attempted to seduce Jay and kidnapped Manny to try and get to their wealth. Although they reached an impasse in "A Tale Of Three Cities", Gloria still continues to ruins her sister's happiness - especially when she chases away Sonia's fiancée after mistaking him for a gold digger.

Worst: Manny And Luke

Why in the world do the writers continue to pit these two against one another when they are meant to be "family and best friends"? Every time the writers want to cause drama between the two, it always involves a girl. The first time they fell out, Manny is upset to find Luke was "flirting" with lab partner and crush ("Integrity").

Skip forward five years and this storyline has just been repeated in "The Last Christmas", only this time Luke has begun dating Manny's ex-girlfriend. It gets to the point where these awkward love triangles should be put to bed so that it does not affect the whole family dynamic.

Best: Phil And Gil

The best rivalry in  Modern Family  has to be Phil and Gil's. Everyone knows how much Phil detests the rival estate agent after Gil targets his family and steals his thunder. For instance, Gil deliberately ruins Phil's presentation to embarrass him in front of the kids ("Career Day"). He also nearly causes a rift between Claire and Phil when the two argue about Claire accepting a job offer at his business.

Another memorable episode being "The Feud" when their rivalry extends into the family and we nearly have a Dunphy-Thorpe war. Ultimately, Phil proves the victor this time around when he ends up getting Lily to spread her lice to his opponent. No one ever gets tired of this relationship.

'Modern Family' Cast Member Ty Burrell Missed the Reunion, But He's OK

PUBLISHED Nov. 16 2023, 9:38 a.m. ET

UPDATED Jan. 11 2024, 3:59 p.m. ET

  • The Modern Family cast reunited in November 2023 for dinner and reconnection.
  • Ty Burrell, the actor who played Phil on the show, was absent from the gathering.
  • Many thought that Ty may have died, but it turns out that the actor is doing just fine.

Cast reunions for long-running, popular shows can be emotional affairs for both the cast and anyone who watched the show every week for years. In November 2023, Modern Family fans took a stroll down memory lane after most of the cast reunited, with many of the kids looking a lot older than viewers may have remembered.

Although almost every member of the cast was involved in that reunion, which was publicized in a group photo, many noticed that the actor who played Phil wasn't in attendance. What happened to Ty Burrell , the actor who played Phil on the show?

What happened to Phil from 'Modern Family?'

Ty Burrell played Phil, the patriarch of the Dunphy family, throughout the entirety of the show's run. He was absent during the reunion, and many noticed that the cast was holding a picture of the actor. The decision to hold a picture of Ty in his absence led many to wonder whether the actor had died.

"Umm...why are they holding a picture of Phil like that," one person wrote on Twitter under the picture of the reunion.

modern family reunion pic.twitter.com/CccBZVAmHt — cinesthetic. (@TheCinesthetic) November 16, 2023

"Oh hell naw. For a second I thought Ty passed away and I didn't even know," another person added.

Although the cast holding Ty's picture made many people think that he had died, that's definitely not the case. The actor simply couldn't attend the reunion for whatever reason. So, they decided to hold a picture of him instead, almost to indicate to anyone who saw the picture that he was absent but not forgotten.

It's unclear why Ty couldn't be at the Modern Family reunion, but given that the rest of the cast decided to hold a picture of him, it doesn't seem to be the case that Ty wasn't invited or didn't want to attend. What seems far more likely is that he had some sort of scheduling conflict that kept him from attending. There haven't been any reports that he is ill or injured. Ty has continued to work regularly in the years since Modern Family ended.

Although the actor isn't very active on social media these days, one of his more recent appearances was at the 2023 Kids In The Spotlight Film Awards at Paramount Pictures Studios on Nov. 04, 2023 in Los Angeles.

Ty Burrell in 2023

Ty was lauded for his performance on the show.

Modern Family was an awards juggernaut generally, and Ty was often one of the actors who was rewarded for his work on the series. He won the Emmy for best supporting actor from 2011 to 2014. He was nominated eight consecutive times over the course of the show's run.

Of course, Modern Family was hugely successful throughout the entirety of its run, and the reunion left many fans nostalgic for the series now that it has been off the air for three years.
