Where to Find 4k & HDR Movies and Content

If you want a proper 4k or HDR experience from your TV, you need to watch genuine 4k or HDR video . The availability of high-quality, 4k HDR content is increasing steadily and is much more readily available than even a few years ago. Here are some of the ways you can watch the Ultra High Definition (UHD) content you crave.

Sales of 4k Ultra HD Blu-ray players peaked in 2017, and while they've been in decline since then (as have disc players more generally), Ultra HD Blu-rays are still one of the main ways to watch 4k content. Ultra HD Blu-rays were first released at the beginning of 2016. While streaming 4k content has limitations based on bit rate, connection speed, and bandwidth caps, you just need to grab an Ultra HD Blu-ray and pop it into a UHD Blu-ray player to start enjoying higher-resolution content.

They are only playable with Ultra HD Blu-ray players, which use lasers of a different wavelength than regular Blu-ray players. You also need a TV that complies with HDCP 2.2 to watch Ultra HD Blu-rays in UHD; on a TV that doesn't, Ultra HD Blu-rays will simply revert to 1080p. It's also possible to watch UHD Blu-rays with some game consoles, including the Xbox One S or Xbox One X, as well as the Xbox Series X and the PlayStation 5 .

A lot of the earliest 4k Blu-ray movies weren't actually filmed in 4k. They were filmed in lower resolutions then upscaled to 4k in editing, which is still an upgrade over 1080p.

Streaming/Subscription Options

Like any other stream, these options use your internet connection to deliver content to you. 4k streams require much more bandwidth than regular HD, so make sure you have both a good enough connection speed and a high enough bandwidth cap to stream 4k content.

Keep in mind that in an effort to keep bandwidth costs down, the bit rate for some 4k streaming content can be relatively low—even 1080p Blu-rays have higher bit rates. Bit rate refers to how many bits of information are processed per second. So, while the resolution is there for 4k streaming, the streams have less information, meaning the quality isn't as high.

These are videos uploaded by regular users, but for the sheer amount of 4k content, nothing has YouTube beat for now. If you're looking for a way to test out a new 4k TV's capabilities, this is a great place to start. YouTube also supports HDR, which is supported by many streaming devices and the majority of 4k UHD TVs.

Netflix has continued to add 4k content in the past few years, but you need to have a 'Premium' subscription to access it. Many of the offerings are Netflix Originals, but there is a significant selection of licensed movies as well. Almost every Netflix Original released is now available in HDR, as well as a lot of licensed content. Almost all new content is in 4k nowadays.

Netflix now also supports Dolby Vision HDR, on top of regular HDR10. Learn more about the differences between Dolby Vision, HDR10, and HDR 10+  here .

It's important to note that not all Netflix apps/devices allow 4k streaming. As with Ultra HD Blu-Rays, your player and screen must support HDCP 2.2 or higher, which, unfortunately, excludes some monitors.

You get access to quite a few 4k TV shows and movies with an Amazon Prime subscription. Amazon has pushed pretty hard to add HDR content, too, which is good news for people with compatible TVs. Much like Netflix, they're also producing a lot of their own high-budget HDR content, including popular shows like  The Boys  and  Tom Clancy's Jack Ryan .

All of Amazon's original content is available in HDR10+ on compatible TVs, which defaults to HDR10 on devices that don't support it. Like Netflix, Amazon Prime also has some Dolby Vision HDR content, which can be played from the Prime app on the majority of TVs that support Dolby Vision.

Similar to Amazon Prime Video, 4k HDR content is included with a standard Disney+ subscription. As long as you're watching on a compatible device, and you have enough bandwidth, the app will automatically play available content in 4k and/or HDR.

Disney has a growing selection of titles available in 4k and HDR10, as well as some titles that support Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos sound. These are mostly Disney's original content, but a lot of the platform's most popular titles support HDR, including shows like The Mandalorian along with the entire Star Wars and Marvel catalogs, among others.

Hulu had offered 4k programming as far back as 2016, but quietly pulled all of its 4k content in 2018. In 2019, however, Hulu re-released its 4k content. While the 4k catalog is limited to only Hulu and FX shows and movies, most of Hulu's popular original content, like The Handmaid's Tale and Little Fires Everywhere, is available in 4k, as long as your device supports it.

Unfortunately, at this time, Hulu's 4k content is only available on select devices. You can see the list of 4k compatible devices  here . Hulu also doesn't support HDR.

When it first launched in 2020, HBO Max didn't have any 4k offerings, but that's started to change. Wonder Woman 1984 was the first 4k HDR release on HBO Max, and Warner Bros. announced that all of its 2021 movie lineup would also be released on HBO Max in 4k at no extra cost to subscribers. It's unclear, however, if or when HBO Max will offer 4k for other content besides new release movies.

Launched on March 4, 2021, Paramount+ is the new streaming platform from ViacomCBC. It's a rebranded version of CBS All-Access with expanded content from CBS, MTV, BET, Nickelodeon, Comedy Central, and more. Its Premium tier offers 4k HDR streaming and the ability to download 4k shows and movies to watch offline. So far, 4k is mostly limited to the platform's original content.

In 2019, Apple launched its own streaming service to compete with other streaming giants that produce their own content. Apple TV+ initially launched with only original content, but lack of growth has pushed Apple to begin licensing non-original content. You can access Apple TV+ through an Apple TV box or through the Apple TV app, which is available on a number of devices. The app also supports Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos on certain devices, including compatible Apple devices and some non-Apple devices.

While it's not necessary to have an Apple TV 4k box in order to watch in 4k HDR, having an Apple TV 4k allows you to achieve much higher bit rates than on the app alone, resulting in a higher quality 4k stream.

Purchase & Rental

These options allow you to rent or buy movies for streaming or download. As with the subscription streaming options, they'll use bandwidth to deliver your content to you. Once again, the bit rates are not as high as you’ll find with physical media.

Amazon Prime Video Store

Amazon Prime Video also has a store with a great selection of 4k UHD content available to rent or purchase on-demand. There are some restrictions on access (you have 30 days from purchase to start a rental and films must be watched within 48 hours of starting), but the same is true of most video-on-demand (VOD) services. Individual TV episodes start at $1.99 and go up to $19.99 for a season, while movies typically cost $3.99 or $5.99 to rent and between $7.99-$19.99 to buy. Newer theatrical releases are also available through early access for $19.99.

A lot of movies that come free with a Prime Video subscription are also available to either rent or buy through the store if you'd rather not pay for a full Prime subscription. There's also premium content that's only available to rent and/or buy, even if you're a Prime member. 

Vudu has a big selection of 4k UHD and HDR content available to rent or purchase. You'll need a 4k UHD TV with access to Vudu to watch movies in Ultra HD, or a 4k Roku connected to a 4k TV. To watch the movies in HDR, you will need to get a TV that supports Dolby Vision. Prices can vary, but they're pretty competitive with other VOD services. You can expect to pay about $19.99 to purchase a movie in 4k UHD, and around $3.99-$7.99 to rent. New releases, however, can go up to $19.99 just to rent.

Even if you don't have an Apple TV or an Apple TV+ subscription, Apple also offers 4k and HDR content to rent or purchase through iTunes. Plus, 4k movies and shows in the iTunes store cost the same as their HD counterparts. You can even upgrade existing purchases to 4k at no extra cost, as long as the content is available in 4k. Prices of rentals and purchases vary but you can expect similar prices to other VOD services.

Provider Exclusives

These are options that are exclusive to those with subscriptions to particular TV providers. Some use up bandwidth, while others are delivered via satellite. The bit rates for the various systems vary.

Available on some Samsung and LG 4k TVs, the Xfinity UHD Sampler app requires a Comcast subscription that includes Xfinity UHD. A couple of TV shows are available through this, including Chicago Fire.

DirecTV was one of the first major TV providers to offer 4k content, mostly live sports and concerts. The 4k Genie Mini is a device that gives you access to more 4k content if you're a DirecTV subscriber. You also need a Genie HD DVR, an internet connection, and either a compatible smart TV or a 4k Genie Mini. If you’ve got all of those components, you can rent 4k movies from DirecTV, and also access a dedicated 4k channel that plays nature documentaries, travel videos, and other content.

Dish's Hopper 3 and 4k Joey are both capable of playing 4k video. The Hopper 3 is the main DVR/receiver, and the Joey can access content through the Hopper 3 when the two are connected via a wired network. You can use these to access on-demand 4k movies and TV shows, as well as Netflix.

TV Antennas 

Over-the-air (OTA) antennas are an alternative to cable that allows you to broadcast television channels for free using antenna signals. With the new ATSC 3.0 broadcasting standards (marketed as NextGen TV ), you can now get OTA broadcasts in 4k UHD. There are some limits, of course. While NextGen TV is expanding, it's currently only available in select American cities. Also, while networks and broadcasters are increasingly adopting 4k, notably in sports broadcasting, converting all content to 4k is costly, and it will likely take some time before it's ubiquitous.

Antennas are also limited by location and signal strength. The amount of channels you get depends on where you are and how large an area your antenna covers. Still, this is an increasingly viable and affordable option if you want an alternative to some of the more mainstream digital avenues mentioned above. NextGen TV is also designed to work with the Internet, meaning it could bridge the gap between broadcast and streaming. 

4k content availability has improved a lot in recent years and should continue to improve at a rapid pace. There are many different services available at several different price points, meaning most people who want to enjoy 4k UHD content on their TVs should be able to find something that suits them well.

Where to watch the best 4K content: Netflix, HBO, Amazon, Hulu, and more

Not sure where to watch the best 4K content out there? Once upon a time, a 4K TV was a luxury reserved for the wealthy. Not anymore. Today, you can get 4K TVs for less than $500 , and with 8K just around the corner , they’re bound to become even more affordable. But despite the great price, finding good 4K content still isn’t that easy. Just because it exists doesn’t mean it has become standardized on every platform. Once you know where to look, though, there’s plenty of 4K content available. Yes, you’ll need to pay for it, and you’ll need the right gear, but it’s worth the visual experience. We’ve found all the best sources of 4K content around and have gathered them here for you. Check out our guide on why you’re not getting Netflix in 4K and how to fix it .

Requirements: Only select devices support 4K HDR on HBO Max. While HBO has definitively stated that Android TV, Chromecast with Google TV, Chromecast Ultra, 4K Fire TVs, Apple TV 4K, and the Android TV-powered AT&T TV support HBO Max in 4K, that’s the entire list at the moment.

While HBO Max launched without 4K compatibility, it caught up by making the day-and-date release of Wonder Woman 1984   available in 4K. Warner Bros. also announced that it would release its entire 2021 slate on HBO Max at no extra cost to subscribers, all of which will be available in 4K. No word yet on whether other content will eventually be made available in 4K.

Cost: $18 per month for the Premium plan that includes Ultra HD content.

Requirements: Recommended internet speed of 25Mbps or higher; a 4K Ultra HD smart TV with the Netflix app built-in, from manufacturers including Samsung, LG, Panasonic, Sony, Vizio, Philips, TCL, and Hisense; or a compatible 4K Ultra HD TV connected to any of the recent 4K-capable Roku streamers : Amazon Fire TV Cube, Google Chromecast Ultra, or Google’s latest Chromecast with Google TV , among others.

Netflix, a constant innovator, was one of the first services to offer 4K Ultra HD content, which took flight with the second season of its original series House of Cards . Since then, the content has been growing consistently — all of the service’s major original series are now being shot in 4K, and some in HDR and Dolby Vision , including recent hits and old favorites. Netflix is also continuously adding new original 4K films and breathtaking nature documentaries to its library along with select 4K blockbuster titles. If you’ve made the leap to 4K Netflix, but for some reason you’re not getting it, head to our guide on how to fix it .

Cost: Included with a $120 per year or $13 per month Prime Membership; select titles for rent start at $6, and titles for purchase range from $10 to $20.

Requirements: Recommended internet speed of 25Mbps or higher; a 4K UHD TV with the Amazon Prime app installed or installable, from manufacturers such as Samsung, LG, Sony, Vizio, TCL, and Panasonic; or a compatible 4K Ultra HD TV connected to 4K-capable Roku streamers: Chromecast, Nvidia Shield TV streamer, Apple TV 4K , and (of course) Amazon Fire TV 4K-capable streaming devices.

Amazon’s “free” service — which comes with a Prime subscription — launched with 4K Ultra HD versions of some of its original series like Mozart in the Jungle and Transparent   and has since expanded to include most of its original series, as well as lots of other television series and films. Amazon also streams many of its original series in HDR, including Jack Ryan in Dolby Vision .

The service also has a rotating selection of 4K Ultra HD movies as part of its Prime collection with the exact number of specific titles available varying from month to month. As for the not-so-free selections, Amazon sells a number of 4K Ultra HD titles starting at around $20.

Cost:  Starting at $6 for an ad-riddled experience, $12 for ad-free.

Requirements: Recommended internet speed of 16Mbps or higher; select 4K UHD TVs, including 4K Vizio SmartCast TVs and LG TVs; compatible 4K streaming devices, such as Apple TV 4K, Xbox One S or Xbox One X, Roku 4K devices, Google Chromecast Ultra or Chromecast with Google TV, or Amazon Fire TV and Fire TV Stick.

After pulling its entire catalog of 4K content without so much of a word to its customers back in 2018, Hulu has once again ventured into the wonderful world of 4K Ultra HD. Originally only available for Apple TV 4K and Chromecast Ultra owners, 4K support has since been expanded.

You’ll find most of your 4K content in Hulu Originals , but not all of them are available that crisp. You’ll also find a smattering of 4K movies, but these are a lot more scarce and take a bit of work to find. Expect Hulu to expand its selection.

Cost: $6 per month

Requirements: Select Ultra HD TVs by Samsung, Sony, and LG; Streaming boxes and sticks like 4K-capable Roku devices, Apple TV 4K, Chromecast, Amazon Fire TV, Nvidia Shield TV, and Xiaomi Mi Box S; and the Xbox One and PlayStation 4.

Many of the services featured on this list existed before the 4K streaming explosion, so their respective content injections were slow and painful, but you don’t have to worry about that with Disney+. There are over 600 movies and shows to choose from, many of which are available in 4K Ultra HD and HDR. You can expect most new stuff to be delivered in 4K, including Star Wars spinoff series The Mandalorian , Marvel’s WandaVision and its latest films, and all the National Geographic documentaries you can handle. Keep digging, and you’ll see that Disney+ even offers some of your favorite classics at this level of fidelity.

Cost:  Starting at $6 for new release rentals, $20 for new release purchases, Apple TV+ is $5/month

Requirements: Compatible 4K UHD TV; Apple TV 4K  streaming box; minimum internet speed of 25 Mbps for 4K streaming

Following the release of the Apple TV 4K , iTunes began adding a selection of 4K and HDR content to its store. These titles are available to purchase or rent. Finding content in the iTunes store is easy — icons flag the content as 4K, HDR, and/or Dolby Vision (Dolby’s proprietary HDR format). One perk of iTunes is that the 4K versions of titles cost the same as the HD versions, which is drastically cheaper than most other services.

You can also find 4K content on your Apple TV 4K across apps. The4K content is available from streamers like Amazon Prime Video, Netflix, Disney+, HBO Max, ESPN, as well as Apple Originals from the Apple TV+ subscription. In most cases, you will not have to pay extra to view available content in 4K when using an Apple TV 4K.

Cost: Some rentals are free (ad-supported); paid 4K rentals start at $3, or $10 to $20 for purchase.

Requirements: Recommended internet speed of 10 to 11Mbps or higher; Select Sony, Samsung, Vizio, LG, and Roku-equipped 4K TVs and Blu-ray players; Xbox One X or Xbox One S; 4K-enabled Roku streamers, Apple TV 4K, Chromecast Ultra/Chromecast with Google TV, or Nvidia Shield TV device paired with compatible 4K Ultra HD TVs; Windows 10 PC

Movie rental/downloading service Vudu has been quietly working its way into the 4K Ultra HD conversation. The service has slowly expanded the number of supported devices and is constantly adding more. Vudu’s library is continually updated with many of the latest UHD movie releases, and it’s now one of the better services for finding UHD films to show off your 4K TV’s capabilities. It’s also part of Movies Anywhere , which lets you store your digital vault from multiple services.

Cost: Free; $12 per month for YouTube Premium subscription; $2 to $15 for film rentals/purchases.

Requirements: Recommended internet speed of 25Mbps or higher; Ultra HD TV with Android TV OS and select Samsung, LG, Sony, Sharp, and Hisense TVs, as well as Vizio SmartCast TVs; Xbox One S and Xbox One X; 4K-capable Roku streamer, Amazon Fire TV, Nvidia Shield TV, or Chromecast Ultra or Chromecast with Google TV hooked up to a 4K TV. Keep in mind that the number of TVs that support YouTube’s brand of 4K is still in flux — just because there’s a YouTube app doesn’t mean it’ll be in 4K — so check with retailers before making a purchase.

Thanks in large part to its massive army of video contributors and a barrage of 4K cameras now on the market, YouTube has quickly become one of the best sources for 4K Ultra HD content. You won’t find a big catalog of films or TV series, but those looking for some brilliant scenes to show off their TV’s mad 4K Ultra HD skills will find them here — everything from nature videos to high-flying stunts. And perhaps best of all, most of it is free — such as the popular HDR Channel .

Cost:  $1 to $10 per rental.

Requirements: Recommended minimum download speed of 10Mbps or higher; app available on select Samsung, Hisense, Vizio, and Sony Bravia Ultra HD TVs, 4K-capable Roku devices, Apple TV 4K, Amazon Fire TV, Nvidia Shield TV streaming box, or Windows 10 PC.

As the self-proclaimed host of the largest 4K Ultra HD library of streaming content available, Ultraflix hosts several hundred hours of 4K nature documentaries (including multiple titles originally created for Imax), dozens of concerts, videos from musical acts, and hundreds of hours of sci-fi, action, comedy, and drama, all for rental in 48-hour blocks.

Sony’s PlayStation Video

Cost: Starting at $2 for TV episode rentals, $3 per movie for a 24-hour rental, and $10 to $35 for purchases.

Requirements:  Sony 4K Ultra HD TV; 4K Ultra HD TV with HDCP 2.2 copyright protection and a  PlayStation 4 Pro  for 4K Ultra HD playback (other Sony devices are supported, but they do not have 4K playback).

Sony’s video on demand (VOD) service allows for the purchase and rental of more than 200 movies and TV shows. It’s one of the less common services on this list, with support limited to select 4K Sony devices — TVs, Blu-ray players, and the PlayStation 4 Pro. That’s not a great situation if you’re not all-in on Sony, but PlayStation Video has a sizable library of 4K content. Sony regularly runs promotions for films coming out of its own studios, such as Spider-Man: Homecoming or The Dark Tower . If these bonuses are important to you, PlayStation Video is a perfectly fine source for 4K entertainment.

Cost: Rentals start at $5 (varies by title) and movies cost $15 to $35 to purchase.

Requirements: Recommended minimum 10Mbps download speed; select Samsung and LG Ultra HD TVs, PC, or 4K-capable Roku streamer hooked up to 4K Ultra HD TV.

This service was originally known as M-Go, before Fandango purchased and rebranded it. It offers 4K UHD movies for either purchase or rental, as well as a healthy selection of films that are also offered with HDR. Unlike some other services, FandangoNow has a list on its website that makes it easy to see which movies are available with HDR, and what is only available in standard 4K.

Cost: $6 rentals, $10 to $30 for purchase.

Requirements: 20Mbps internet connection; 4K-capable Android TVs from Samsung, Sony, or LG; Chromecast Ultra or newer Chromecast with Google TV, Nvidia Shield TV, or 4K-capable Roku streamer connected to a 4K TV, among other Google devices.

Google has its own 4K streaming devices, the latest being the Chromecast with Google TV (which has replaced the Chromecast Ultra) , and the Google Play Store has a selection of 4K movies available for rental or purchase. This service isn’t just relegated to the Chromecast, however. Any 4K-capable streamer that supports Google Play — such as Roku  devices or the  Nvidia Shield — can access these movies via the Google Play app.

Cost: Starts at $55 per month.

Requirements: 30Mbps internet speed recommended; Streaming devices like Chromecast Ultra, Fire TV, Roku, or Apple TV; Select Ultra HD Android TV sets by Sony, Sharp, Hisense; Nvidia Shield Android TV box; Xiaomi Mi Box

In July 2018, FuboTV became the first live-sports TV-streaming service to offer programming in 4K with HDR. At first, the only games to take advantage of this increased visual fidelity were 2018 World Cup matches, but the service later added some NCAA football games in 4K as well. While 4K content is still fairly limited, the service is equipped to show both Fox and FS1 in 4K with HDR10, so if nothing else, expect to see more live sports making use of these technologies moving forward. Fubo also has a limited selection of 4K content on-demand, so check it out if you want a firsthand preview of what the live events might look like.

Cost: $4 to $16 per 4K Ultra HD title on demand; live channel requires DirecTV Choice or higher package.

Requirements:  On-demand: Manufacturer-certified DirecTV 4K-ready TV (or standard 4K TV and 4K Genie Mini) and DirecTV’s Genie HD DVR (model 530 and up). Live: Previous requirements plus  the latest Genie HD DVR.

Pioneering the first 4K Ultra HD service for any cable or satellite provider, DirecTV has delivered a handful of VOD movies in 4K since 2014. Currently, DirecTV offers a wide range of 4K movies, including titles like Tenet , The New Mutants, and Promising Young Woman . The channel also offers live programming on a limited, event-based schedule, which you can preview at any time.

Cost: $8 per 4K Ultra HD title on-demand, live packages start at $60; $10 per month access fees.

Requirements:  Dish Hopper 3, 4K Joey (optional add-on for more than one TV), and compatible 4K Ultra HD TV, Dish Network programming package.

With the introduction of its Hopper 3 hardware and 4K Joey, Dish joins a growing list of cable providers offering 4K content both live and on-demand. As long as you’ve got the equipment, the money, and the ability to commit two years to pay it, live 4K programming is available on any channel that offers 4K, though that is an admittedly small list at this point. As more channels add 4K programming, you’ll theoretically be able to access it as long as the channel is in your programming package. A fair number of movies are available in 4K on-demand as well, for $8 per rental, compared to $3 for standard definition and $7 for high definition.

In August 2018, Dish added Epix’s full catalog of 4K movies to its catalog. This brought titles like Arrival, The Magnificent Seven, Star Trek Beyond , and  Transformers: The Last Knight to the service in 4K. You’ll either need to subscribe to Epix for $7 per month or the Dish Movie Pack for $10 a month, but in general, more 4K content is better than less 4K content.

Comcast premiered its own 4K service in December 2014 with a streaming app. For now, there are limited titles available, most of which fall under the umbrella of Comcast subsidiary NBCUniversal’s library. At first, 4K content was only available from a VOD app for Samsung UHD TVs, but the service eventually released 4K set-top boxes with support for live broadcasts, though you can’t yet record the higher resolution feeds. A physical format some have dismissed as obsolete in the streaming age, Ultra HD Blu-ray discs and their corresponding players offer the best way to watch 4K Ultra HD content in terms of quality. The platform exhibits fewer artifacts than highly compressed 4K streams and brings along HDR10 and Dolby Vision support (along with Dolby Atmos and DTS:X immersive sound). Just note that you will need an Ultra HD Blu-ray viewer to view them, or an Xbox One S or Xbox One X .

While there’s plenty to watch from the services and platforms discussed in this article, it’s not the only form of entertainment your 4K TV can enhance. For the gaming crowd, there are now four 4K- and HDR-compatible consoles on the market: The Xbox Series X , PlayStation 5 , and the immediate predecessors PlayStation 4 Pro and the Xbox One X .

Xbox Series X, Xbox One X, Xbox One S, and PS 5 all support 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray, although PS4 Pro does not. The PS4 Pro does play HD Blu-rays and supports 4K streaming on Netflix and Amazon Prime Video.

But finding things to watch on it in that lovely 4K resolution (you can call it UHD if you prefer) can still be somewhat tricky. There’s a fair bit out there if you know where to look, though, and the even better news is that we’ve done the looking for you.

The lord of the rings: the rings of power (s1).

The most expensive TV show of all time may not have lived up to its grand expectations, but Amazons’ The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power truly impressed with its breathtaking visuals and set pieces. The eight-part series follows a bunch of elves and dwarves across Middle Earth as they try to answer the question, who, or what is Sauron?

The series was largely met with a collective ‘meh’ by audiences, even if Nielsen found that viewers watched the first two episodes for 1.25 billion minutes in its first four days. In our opinion, the plot is sometimes muddy and slow moving, and sometimes ties itself into plot knots. Where The Rings of Power truly shines, though, is in how incredibly beautiful it looks on screen. Battle scenes are hugely and detailed, much more suited to a cinema screen than a living room one. The landscapes of Middle Earth more than live up to those found in Peter Jackson’s original trilogy, too.

The Power of the Dog

This drama from Jane Campion, nominated for a veritable armload of Oscars (Campion ended up winning Best Director), stars Benedict Cumberbatch as a coarse, grumpy Montana rancher who takes issue with his brother’s new wife and her unconventional teenage son. Is he resentful of his brother’s newfound happiness? Worried about the newcomers’ intentions for the family business? Or is there something else – something less obvious – that’s got him so worked up?

This is a film that works against the viewer’s expectations in an unsettling and disarming way, but accusations that it’s particularly slow-moving or opaque are misplaced: watch the movie and Campion clearly lays it all out for you to see. It’s not a barrel of laughs by any stretch of the imagination, but the masterfully shot landscapes and excellent performances from a cast that also includes Jesse Plemons and Kirsten Dunst should keep you glued to the screen.

The best sci-fi horror movie ever (and one of the best horror movies full stop) and the film that spawned a sprawling franchise based around its titular ‘xenomorph’, 1979’s Alien is a masterpiece of tension and visuals, with director Ridley Scott at the very top of his game.

When the motley crew of deep space hauler Nostromo (a wonderful bunch of relatable regular working Joes rather than the sort of exaggerated, OTT personalities we usually see in this type of film) pick up a transmission from a moon, they set down to investigate, sparking off a sequence of events that we wouldn’t dream of spoiling here but, yes, eventually involves a predatory alien stalking the corridors and vents of the ship. It’s fantastic cat-and-mouse sci-fi stuff, and – courtesy of Scott’s mastery of lighting and the stellar production design, looks incredible for a movie now well over 40 years old. Especially in 4K.

The Hand of God

Paolo Sorrentino’s semi-autobiographical film is filled with gorgeous shots that burn themselves into your head (particularly when watching in pristine 4K) – a frantic night-time drive to a hospital, a flare exploding over the Bay of Naples, a collapsed chandelier in a crumbling ballroom – but its characters are just as memorable.

Teenager Fabietto (a stand-in for the young director himself) is obsessed with football, alternately dreaming of Diego Maradona being signed by Napoli and about his beautiful aunt Patrizia; he’s quiet and has few friends, but there’s no shortage of love and support from his family. When a tragedy turns everything upside-down, his young life comes to a crossroads: should be pursue happiness and pleasure or dedicate himself to something more important? If that sounds like every other coming-of-age story, don’t be put off, because Sorrentino’s vision feels anything but stereotypical. Beautiful stuff.

Severance (S1)

The term ‘work-life balance’ takes on a whole new meaning in this sci-fi drama about the joys of office toil. Adam Scott plays Mark S., a manager working at Lumon, a faceless corporation where secrecy is paramount – so much so that employees must agree to have their minds and memories surgically divided into separate sections: one for work and one for personal life.

These two personalities never cross over or ‘meet’ (that’s the intention, anyway), making each employee essentially two people living in a single body. The so-called ‘severance’ procedure throws up a host of ethical, moral and existential questions, each of which the show explores in entertaining fashion while unravelling the mystery of what actually goes on at Lumon, and why it’s vital that employees can’t take their work home with them, even as a memory.

Netflix’s best new show of 2023 (so far at least) stars Ali Wong and Steven Yeun as Los Angelinos who, in the first few minutes of the first episode, go from total strangers to mortal enemies. The flashpoint is a road rage incident, but as we get to know the characters it’s clear that their fury arises from somewhere far deeper. They can’t seem to stop this feud, even as their respective personal and professional lives threaten to unravel as a result of the ongoing dust-up.

If it all sounds a bit heavy, don’t be put off; Beef is also funny, stylish and ultimately ends in a very different place to where it begins – and it’s shot fantastically too. A welcome reminder that Netflix can still occasionally make a great TV series. More of this, please – although that’s not to say we want or need a second season; this is basically perfect on its own.

For All Mankind (S1-3)

This sci-fi drama gives history a remix, portraying an alternative universe where the Soviet Union was the first nation to put a human being on the moon. This reinvigorates an embarrassed and outraged America’s emotional and material investment in the space race. This ‘what if’ scenario gives the show’s creators scope to delve into the hypothetical ramifications for technology, aeronautics and politics, but there’s plenty of human drama front and centre too.

Fast-forwarding a decade to the early 1980s, the second season sees the Cold War threaten to warm up as American astronauts and Soviet cosmonauts vie for control of lunar resources, while the third season takes place in the early 1990s, where participants in the space race have set their sights on a new finish line: Mars.

Rogue One ’s swashbuckling master thief Cassian Andor (the excellent Diego Luna) gets his own series, giving us a new street-level perspective on the nascent uprising against the Empire that eventually grows into the Rebel Alliance.

If, like us, you were left somewhat deflated by Obi-Wan Kenobi ’s lack of stakes and strangely lifeless tone, Andor is the show to reignite that Star Wars spark. Created by Tony Gilroy (who also wrote the Jason Bourne movies and, yes, Rogue One ), it’s far more gritty, grounded and grown-up than any previous Star Wars series we’ve seen, with characters that feel real, flawed and drawn in shades of grey. The worst thing about it? It makes The Mandalorian look like a children’s TV series.

A gripping piece of indie filmmaking (and one of only a handful of indie movies available to stream in 4K), District 9 tells a story of alien refugees stuck on Earth – and their mistreatment at the hands of unsympathetic human officials – that draws clear parallels with the apartheid South Africa in which director Neill Blomkamp grew up.

When a company field agent assigned to evict aliens from illegal settlements contracts a DNA-twisting virus, he is forced to seek refuge himself – and can only do so inside an alien ghetto called District 9.

Netting 2021’s Best Picture, Best Director and Best Actress Oscars, Nomadland is a thoughtful and thought-provoking drama about Fern, a van-dwelling widow who travels the American West in the wake of 2008’s financial crisis.

Based on Jessica Bruder’s non-fiction book about her own life as a “houseless” wanderer, Chloe Zhao’s movie is far from the sort of hand-wringing poverty porn it could have become in less empathetic, capable hands (Hillbilly Elegy, we’re looking at you). Fern’s rootless lifestyle isn’t romanticised, but it’s clear she feels at home on the road, buoyed by the kindness and concern of her fellow nomads and the simplicity of living off the grid. McDormand’s much-lauded performance (she says more with just her facial expressions here than most actors could in ten movies’ worth of dialogue) is worth the price of admission alone, but Nomadland will leave any viewer with much to think about.

Sound of Metal

Riz Ahmed’s Ruben is a noise-metal drummer, endlessly touring tiny venues with his partner Lou in a beaten-up RV. This contented lifestyle comes to a juddering halt when Ruben begins to experience hearing loss. Realising that his career may be over and tempted back into his old substance abuser ways, Ruben checks himself into a rural deaf community – but he remains fiercely driven by a hope of fixing his affliction, getting back on tour and getting back to Lou. Ahmed is typcially fantastic, yes, but then everything about Darius Marder’s debut movie works so well: the sound design that puts you in Ruben’s head; the supporting performances of Paul Raci and Olivia Cooke; and the themes of identity, dependence and acceptance that run through it.

The stakes couldn’t be higher: with an interstellar “planet killer” comet on course to wipe out pretty much everyone on Earth, engineer Gerard Butler must get his estranged wife (Morena Baccarin) and young son to the safety of an underground bunker in (yes, you guessed it) Greenland.

There may be nothing particularly original going on here, but Greenland is a well-honed race-against-time thriller that successfully conveys the magnitude of its threat. From violent looters to failing technology to big flaming rocks falling out of the sky, Butler and Baccarin find themselves beset with an array of perils – even before the coming impact that may make the human race extinct.

The first full-length Pixar movie to make its debut on Disney+, Soul is a charming tale about finding your place in the world. Jamie Foxx voices Joe Gardner, a New York band teacher who longs to become a professional jazz musician. On the cusp of achieving his dream, he finds himself abruptly sucked into The Great Before – a place where brand new souls are given their personalities and passions before being sent to Earth.

Sensing an opportunity for a second chance, Joe is tasked with convincing a wilful soul called 22 (Tiny Fey) that life is worth living – but little does he realise that he has plenty to learn about the subject, too. It’s beautifully animated, of course, but Soul is also funny and moving, and more philosophical than your average animated movie.

The Boys (S1-3)

If superheroes were real, they’d be jerks, perverts and outright fascists. That’s the premise behind this excellent comic book adaptation, in which a bunch of superstar costumed crusaders are owned and controlled by a ruthless corporation that keeps their bad behaviour (ranging from voyeurism and drug abuse to plain old murderous psychopathy) under wraps to keep the cash rolling in.

When one super-powered outrage leaves a young man bereaved and hellbent on revenge, he joins a group of like-minded vigilantes with the aim of taking Vought down once and for all. Effortlessly blending humour, action and drama, The Boys was Amazon’s best original series of 2019 – and it’s now back from a second season.

The Witcher (S1-3)

Henry Cavill swaps Superman’s cape for Geralt of Rivia’s silver ponytail in Netflix’s adaptation of the Polish fantasy novel series. If you’ve played the hugely successful video games, you’ll know what to expect: a hearty mix of beast slaying, potion quaffing, spellcasting, grimdark medieval combat and nudity.

If you aren’t already familiar with Andrzej Sapkowski’s world and characters, be warned: this series will toss you right into the mixer without spelling everything out. The lack of hand holding is refreshing, particularly as everything falls better into place within a few episodes. In this age of algorithmically-steered TV shows, it’s nice to be treated like an adult with a decent attention span.

As terrifying as it is enthralling, this remarkable documentary film follows the ever-so-slightly bonkers free solo climber Alex Honnold, whose lifelong dream is to scale the 3,200-foot El Capitan in Yosemite National Park alone, without ropes or equipment. Those who aren’t keen on heights might want to watch from behind the sofa, but for everyone else the Oscar-winning Free Solo is a sweaty-palmed thrill ride.

The Mandalorian (S1-3)

Pitched as a Western set in space, the first live action series in the Star Wars universe is set five years after Return of the Jedi and 25 years before The Force Awakens . It follows the adventures of the eponymous armour-plated bounty hunter (Pedro Pascal), who abruptly finds himself the guardian of a very important youngling. Most would consider this the launch flagship show for Disney+, and it lives up to that billing: it’s visually striking, fast-paced and an easy watch – and there’s a second season coming up very soon.

Star Wars: The Last Jedi

The middle entry in the latest Star Wars trilogy might have divided the critics somewhat: some felt that its tone wasn’t sufficiently “ Star Wars -y”, while others enjoyed director Rian Johnson’s fresh take on the universe. One thing nobody could deny is that it’s a visual spectacle and then some. With the arrival of Disney+, it’s finally available to stream too.

Star Wars: A New Hope

The original (and probably second-best) Star Wars movie, A New Hope is now over 40 years old. It still looks and sounds fantastic (partly due to director George Lucas’s inability to stop tinkering with it years after its release), but this trailblazing space opera adventure is beloved for more than just the spectacle of zero-g dog fights and light saber duels.

Star Wars ‘ enduring characters and mythology are introduced and established in this movie, but it also serves as a fantastic self-contained adventure story about a simple farm boy who becomes the heroic figurehead of a revolution. It’s simple stuff at its core, but done so brilliantly that you can’t help but be sold.

The Irishman

The Irishman isn’t just director Martin Scorsese’s long-awaited return to the world of organised crime, it also unites the cinematic Holy Trinity of tough guy gangster movie stars: Robert De Niro, Al Pacino and an out-of-retirement Joe Pesci. It’s kind of like The Expendables, but with people who can act.

It also looks beautiful, with Scorsese’s trademark editing and camerawork showcased by Netflix in beautiful HDR and 4K.

With a story spanning several decades (it’s a showcase for how far CG de-aging technology has come) the film delves one of 20th century America’s biggest mysteries: the disappearance of union boss Jimmy Hoffa (Pacino), who had links to both mainstream politics and the mob. It’s mainly told through the recollections of De Niro’s eponymous “Irishman” Frank Sheeran, a union member who becomes a hitman and enforcer for both Hoffa and the mafia.

The Crown (S1-5)

The Crown ranks as one of Netflix’s best original series to date. That’s partly down to the phenomenal production values that have been instilled in this retelling of Queen Lizzie II’s early years. Over £100 million was invested in this extravaganza, starring Claire Foy and Matt Smith (and, from the third season, Olivia Colman and Tobias Menzies), and that all adds up to a swanky amount of period detail as well as several weighty performances.

The Safdie brothers’ handheld camera feverishly follows Adam Sandler’s hustling jeweller around New York as he attempts to juggle the demands of celebrity clients, his wife, his girlfriend and a bunch of mobsters looking for their money.

If you’re looking for a relaxing watch, Uncut Gems ain’t it – the camerawork, Daniel Lopatin’s electronic score and Sandler’s barely hinged performance (he’s become an expert at playing a man teetering on the edge) all serve to conjure a feeling of unease and anxiety that barely lets up over two hours. It’s deliciously delirious stuff.

Breaking Bad (S1-5)

Yes, Breaking Bad had some memorable supporting characters – Los Pollos Hermanos kingpin Gus Fring, psychopath Tuco Salamanca and, of course, ‘Better Call Saul’ Goodman. But one of its more subtle stars is the Albuquerque landscape, shot beautifully on 35mm film and the main reason why the series has the distinctive look of a modern spaghetti western.

The money Breaking Bad saved by shooting in New Mexico (rather than California, as Vince Gilligan had originally planned) was pumped into its cinematic visual production, ensuring that its 4K version bursts from your screen like a Tuco-bothering chemical explosion.

Love Death + Robots (S1-3)

This collection of R-rated animated shorts about the future is like a tube of Smarties for 4K fans – each of the 18 films is short and tasty, and as soon as you finish one there’s another one right there to eat/watch.

With a variety of animation styles on show and a bunch of clever ideas to shove inside your head alongside the gorgeous visuals, Love Death + Robots is a definite top-tier Netflix entry for 4K/HDR TV owners. It’s also jam-packed with bloody violence, sex and filthy language, so dainty types should be warned – this ain’t your typical cartoon series.

The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel (S1-5)

House of Cards’ Rachel Brosnahan stars as Midge Maisel, a vivacious, fast-talking housewife with what she thought was the perfect 1950s upper-middle class New York lifestyle: husband, kids, a beautiful Upper West Side apartment.

When an unexpected turn puts that all in jeopardy, she decides to pursue a career in standup comedy – and discovers she has a rare talent not only for making people laugh but for hitting upon life’s truths and enigmas while doing it.

The show now numbers a couple of seasons and has bagged a ton of awards, so Amazon’s megabucks has not gone to waste – and there’s plenty evidence of the series’ care and craft on show if you view it in crispy 4K UHD, where its recreation of mid-century New York is, as the kids say, “on point”.

Chef’s Table (S1-6)

This series (now six seasons strong – or nine if you count the pizza-, BBQ- and Gallic-focussed spin-offs) follows world-renowned chefs as they take viewers on a personal journey through their culinary evolution. Essentially, each episode affords the viewer an intimate, informative glimpse into what gets a genius’s creative juices flowing.

Lovingly shot in razor-sharp 4K quality (with HDR too, natch ), you can almost smell the doubtless delightful aromas drifting through the screen and tickling your nostrils. From glistening, perfectly-cooked cuts of meat to steaming pasta dishes and dainty desserts, this is pornography for your appetite. Just try not to dribble all over your remote control, eh?

Undoubtedly the best Netflix-produced movie yet, Roma is the first film from a streaming service that made the cinematic establishment really sit up and take notice – the evidence being its ten Oscar nominations and three wins.

As you’d expect from director Alfonso Cuarón, previously responsible for the likes of Gravity and Children of Men , Roma is both immensely impressive on a technical level – beautifully shot and composed in black and white – and emotionally charged, resulting in a movie that’s every bit as powerful as anything made primarily for the big screen. Semi-autobiographical and inspired by Cuarón’s childhood in Mexico, the film follows an indigenous maid to a wealthy middle-class family as she experiences a series of momentous (and everyday) events.

The Expanse (S1-6)

When original creator SyFy decided to drop The Expanse after three seasons, Amazon swept in and saved it – going on to produce a fourth season and host the lot on Amazon Prime for streaming: all in glorious 4K!

That news will be music to the ears of anyone who digs sprawling, critically-acclaimed and complex space operas, as The Expanse is all of those things: set a couple of centuries in the future where humanity’s colonisation of the solar system has resulted in tension between competing factions, it’s basically Game of Thrones with spaceships instead of dragons.

Patriot (S1-2)

This quirky spy drama blends deadpan humour, action and a coterie of memorable characters for a truly original whole.

Michael Dorman excels as the permanently put-upon CIA operative John Lakeman, who really just wants to be a folk singer – only for life to keep conspiring against him.

The smart plot takes in Iran, nuclear weapons, a single-minded Luxembourger cop and a lot more info about industrial piping than you’d ever need know. It’s genuinely laugh-out-loud funny at times and the acting throughout is excellent. A real winner.

Annihilation

Don’t let Paramount’s decision to dump this movie straight to Netflix rather than give it a cinema release put you off watching it, because Annihilation is one of the most accomplished and intriguing science fiction films of recent years. Not only is it visually outstanding – presented here both in 4K and HDR – and packed with tension, it’s a brain-twister that’ll leave you with more questions than answers (but enough clues to work everything out, too).

When an unexplained “shimmer” engulfs a tract of land in the southeastern United States, then starts expanding, the government doesn’t know how to act. Everything and everybody they send inside disappears, never to return – with one exception. When Natalie Portman’s biologist finds herself personally drawn into the mystery, she joins a team venturing into the Shimmer and uncovers the shocking truth at its centre.

The Grand Tour (S1-5)

Clarkson and co’s Top Gear -topper is a love-it-or-hate-it kind of deal. If you’re a greasy-fingered petrolhead, or simply into following middle-aged boy-men on their banter-fuelled road trips, you’re going to enjoy this series a lot.

If you can’t stand this brand of overbearing laddishness, The Grand Tour isn’t likely to transform you into a believer – but for anybody looking for some beautifully shot, mindless entertainment to grace that new Ultra HD telly, this impeccably-produced show fits the bill.

Stranger Things (S1-4)

It might be an homage to all things 80s (think E.T. meets The Goonies meets The Thing ), but other than the scratchy, retro opening title, everything about Stranger Things ‘ production is cutting edge. It was actually shot in 6K, but even on our backwards 4K TVs the picture is stunning. Gruesomely so at the more horror-tinged points of the series. But whether you’re an AV nerd or not, this demands to be seen – it’s two seasons of truly stunning, surprising, unique television.

Narcos (S1-3)

The first season of this magnificent Netflix original drama is all about the rise of drug baron Pablo Escobar, the second captures the true story of his downfall after years on the run, and the third concerns the Colombian kingpins who suceed him. You can expect a mix of tense action sequences, real news footage and superb moustaches – and it’s worth watching in 4K for the extra detail on Escobar’s superb selection of sweaters alone.

Altered Carbon (S1-2)

Altered Carbon is set in the kind of neon-soaked cyberpunk hellhole – created via dizzyingly expensive special effects – that positively demands to be delivered in 4K and HDR. And, thankfully for us, it is!

This glossy, gory cyber-noir takes us 300-odd years into the future, where Earth has become an overpopulated, dirty, decadent mess – but outright death is a rarity. That’s because your consciousness, digitally backed up on a device called a “stack”, can be transported between bodies – if, of course, you can afford to pay the exorbitant fee such an operation entails.

Into this terrifying new world drops hard-boiled anti-hero Takeshi Kovacs, released from prison and dropped into a snazzy, buffed-up Joel Kinnaman-shaped sleeve after a couple of centuries on ice. Why has Kovacs been brought back after so long? In order to solve a murder, of course – a mystery that the insanely wealthy victim (who’s now reincarnated in a fresh cloned sleeve, natch) believes only Kovacs’ unique skills can unwrap.

Better Call Saul (S1-6)

No one really likes lawyers. They don’t have millions of adoring fans on Instagram, and their spirit animals are sharks – cold, grey killers, with dead, soulless eyes. But they’re not all bad. Take the slick and lovable Saul Goodman, aka Slippin’ Jimmy – a slick, rule-bending practitioner of justice who won our hearts in Breaking Bad , a show with incredible cinematography that has transitioned into this equally spectacular spin-off.

Moneyball ‘s not exactly replete with the kind of million-dollar action sequences that’ll give your fancy new telly a workout. Heck: there’s not even that much baseball in it. In fact, it’s kind of like Excel: The Movie, but the story of how Billy Beane turned the Oakland A’s from whipping boys into winners by studying stats is so well scripted by Aaron Sorkin that the performances of Brad Pitt and Jonah Hill effortlessly capture the team’s underdog spirit. The result? A potential snoozathon becomes one of the most engrossing movies of recent years.

The Man In The High Castle (S1-4)

What if the Allies had lost the Second World War and America was currently ruled by Germany in its eastern half and Japan in its western half? You’d have a damn good plot for a novel, said Philip K. Dick. And, said Amazon over 50 years later, a fairly daring basis for one of its original TV series.

Knowing the scrutiny its first moves as a studio would receive, Amazon pumped a load of dug-up gold into the production. Which is good, because now that it’s available in 4K (with HDR) you can amuse yourself picking up the alt-history references in the newspapers and shop signs as the characters go about their captivating plot-based business in classy period sets.

Black Mirror (S1-6)

Black Mirror ‘s move from Channel 4 to Netflix has meant a bigger budget, giving Charlie Brooker’s series of dark, self-contained cautionary tales a grander scope. It’s also meant an image quality upgrade to 4K and HDR which, given the show’s cynical view of chasing the latest tech trend, feels somewhat ironic – but when it looks this good, we’ll take it regardless.

Suspiria (2017)

Luca Guadagnino’s stylish reimagining of the Dario Argento classic is likely to divide audiences. Ponderously paced and tottering under the weight of more themes and ideas than it knows what to do with, this is peak arthouse horror – and some might find the inevitable gory payoff too little reward for the time invested.

Others will appreciate the movie’s strong sense of place (late 1970s Berlin, a divided city stricken by political turmoil) and the way it builds its oppressive atmosphere with sound effects, strange camera angles and Thom Yorke’s krautrock-inspired score; it’s not a showy movie, but it looks great in 4K. Dakota Johnson stars as a naive American joining a prestigious all-female dance company that just might be a coven of witches, while Tilda Swinton excels in three separate roles.

Bosch (S1-7)

Violent yet beautiful, menacing and stunning in equal measure. No, not Titus Welliver’s moody, driven Hollywood homicide detective Harry Bosch – we’re talking about the sprawling city of Los Angeles. The City of Angels is as big a star of Amazon’s gritty crime drama as Bosch himself, and it looks flippin’ gorgeous in 4K with HDR.

Tune in for the beautiful rolling shots of LA, sprawling out from the Hollywood hills in UHD resolution, and you’ll soon be hooked by the clever murder mystery plotlines.

Here's All The 4K Movies Streaming On Max's New Ultimate Ad-Free Subscription Tier

Goodbye HBO Max, hello Max. Warner Bros. Discovery announced several weeks back that the company was dropping the "HBO" from the name of its flagship streaming service, and that day has come. What does that mean for you, the subscriber? For one, it means a lot more movies and TV shows will be streaming in 4K, and the list of initial titles is pretty impressive. There are, however, a few caveats.

Those who wish to watch movies like "2001: A Space Odyssey" and "Argo" in Ultra HD will need to be subscribed to the new tier offered by Max called "Ultimate Ad-Free." This goes for $19.99 per month and includes access to the service's library of 4K movies and TV shows. There is also a plan with ads for $9.99 per month and a regular ad-free plan for $15.99 per month. Sudheer Sirivara, Global Technology Platform for Warner Bros. Discovery, had this to say:

"We understand the value of offering our users a cinematic playback experience and to that end, we've implemented more advanced technology workflows that allow us to release more 4K content in a faster, more efficient way. Max will offer more than 1,000 films and episodes in 4K at launch, and we'll be adding more every month as we move forward."

The company also notes that all future Warner Bros. movies will stream in 4K once they arrive on Max. Current subscribers will need to make a choice: upgrade to watch stuff in 4K? Or be content with standard 1080p? It is, admittedly, a little frustrating that WBD set a separate price point to watch titles in 4K, but it does take more bandwidth to stream a movie or TV show at a higher quality. Still, passing that on to the consumer feels a bit lame.

Some titles worth checking out in 4K

Another important thing to note is that achieving true 4K through streaming is dependent on a variety of factors. Can your internet connection reliably stream 4K movies? Do you own a 4K TV? This matters a lot in terms of actually getting the benefit of 4K. Setting that aside, let's discuss some highlights from the list of titles available at launch.

For those wanting that big, blockbuster experience from the comfort of home, the MonsterVerse films are included in this initial lineup, including 2014's "Godzilla," 2017's "Kong: Skull Island," and 2021's "Godzilla vs. Kong." All that monster carnage is made all the more glorious in Ultra HD, I assure you. Sticking with that blockbuster theme, Peter Jackson's "The Lord of the Rings" trilogy, both the extended and theatrical cuts, are streaming in 4K on Max right now. This serves as a great excuse to revisit one of the greatest trilogies ever made .

Going back in time a bit, I am admittedly not the biggest musical guy, but certain classics truly benefit from the 4K experience. For that reason, "Singin' in the Rain" popped out on this list, and watching Gene Kelly do his thing in crispy HD seems like a great use of one's time. There's also "The Wizard of Oz," one of the most important and beloved movies ever made, now available in 4K at the click of a button. All of that technicolor beauty will benefit greatly from the higher resolution.

And for the comic book movie fans among you, there is no better place to start than Christopher Nolan's masterpiece "The Dark Knight," a movie that needs no introduction. And for those who just want a visual feast of a superhero movie? Zack Snyder's "Watchmen" is also streaming in 4K, and for my money, it's worth a revisit. Fallout – Amazon Prime Video

Adapting a computer game for the screen is a risky business. For every The Last of Us there are a dozen Prince of Persias , but fortunately, Amazon Prime’s Fallout can be grouped with the former.

While Bethesda’s beloved series of post-apocalyptic games give the player the freedom to pretty much write their own story, TV needs a more structured narrative, so this eight-part adaptation follows the fortunes of Lucy MacLean. Lucy has never experienced life outside the nuclear bunker she calls home, but when her father is kidnapped by outsiders, Lucy disobeys orders and braves an unforgiving world of hungry cannibals, giant cockroaches, deadly radiation, and organ-harvesting robots (voiced brilliantly by Toast of London ’s Matt Berry) to rescue him. 

What’s always been so appealing about the Fallout games is the juxtaposition of Atomic Age outlooks and aesthetics with barren, end-of-the-world landscapes and the survive-at-all-costs people and outposts that inhabit them. Throw in an effective dose of humour and vibrant 4K HDR images, and you’ve got one of the year’s must-watch TV shows.

Oppenheimer – Sky Cinema

Fancy following Fallout with some less cheery atomic entertainment? Christopher Nolan’s Oscar-winning biopic of J. Robert Oppenheimer – ‘the father of the atomic bomb’ – finally hits Sky Cinema this weekend (which means it’s also available via Now TV, but for the full 4K HDR experience you’ll need to watch it via Sky Q , Sky Glass or Sky Stream ).

Based on the exhaustive biography American Prometheus by Kai Bird and Martin J. Sherwin, Nolan’s film focuses on the physicist’s work to weaponise nuclear fission during the Second World War, but as you’d expect of a movie with such heavy subject matter and a director known for his penchant for playing with time, its story is expertly told through multiple strands of non-linear narrative.

Cillian Murphy is brilliant as the titular scientist who wrestled hugely with what he’d created, and while the Trinity tests in the New Mexico desert won’t challenge your sound system in the way you’d expect, Ludwig Göransson’s urgent score certainly will.

Sugar – Apple TV+

Colin Farrell’s appearance in the second series of True Detective might not have been particularly well received, but it’s not hard to see what convinced him to play private investigator John Sugar in this eight-part Apple TV+ series. And we’re not just talking about his canine co-star.

Set among the mansions of Hollywood, the smartly attired sleuth drives his 1965 Chevrolet Corvette to the home of Jonathan Siegel (played by James “That’ll do, Pig” Cromwell) whose unruly granddaughter Olivia has gone missing. Sugar specialises in finding people who have gone AWOL, but this particular assignment means even more to him due to the fact that Siegel is the producer behind some of Sugar’s favourite flicks.

Farrell is no stranger to playing characters battling with personal demons, but Sugar is more stylish than most tortured detective fare, with the sumptuous LA scenery giving your 4K screen something to really show off what it can do. 

Ripley – Netflix

No, this isn’t a spin-off of Alien in which Sigourney Weaver’s Ellen Ripley smokes and sulks her way around Italy, but a new eight-part adaptation of Patricia Highsmith’s 1955 novel The Talented Mr Ripley .  

Most people will probably be familiar with Anthony Minghella’s 1999 movie starring Matt Damon, Gwyneth Paltrow and Jude Law, but this Hitchcockian version goes in a very different direction. Shot entirely in black and white, it features Andrew Scott (he of Fleabag fame) as the charismatic con man who is tasked by Herbert Greenleaf to convince his son Dickie to return home to New York, but who soon has other ideas.

Lensed by Robert Elswit, who won an Oscar for his work on There Will Be Blood , the monochrome cinematography will be an excellent test of how your TV handles contrast and its ability to find detail in the shadows.  

STEVE! (martin) a documentary in 2 pieces – Apple TV+

Steve Martin is undoubtedly a bigger star across the pond than he is in Blighty, but with the brilliant Only Murders in the Building on Disney+ introducing the 78-year-old to a whole new audience, this two-part documentary is as perfectly timed as one of the subject’s gags. 

It’s not just split into two halves to make it easier to digest either. The first part, told from Martin’s point of view with the man himself providing the voiceover, covers his journey from a tough Californian childhood to becoming one of the most successful stand-up comedians in America, while the second shifts to a series of interviews and focuses on Martin’s switch to the big screen, which saw him star in films such as The Jerk , The Man With Two Brains , and Planes, Trains and Automobiles . 

Documentaries aren’t the obvious showcase for 4K and Dolby Atmos, particularly those that rely significantly on archive material, but you won’t get many other opportunities to find out what a banjo sounds like in Atmos.

Scoop – Netflix

A 50-minute interview might not seem like the obvious subject for a 100-minute movie, but Frost/Nixon and The Insider prove you can do a lot with two people talking if the story that surrounds it is compelling enough.

That’s one way you could describe Prince Andrew’s 2019 interview with Emily Maitlis, in which he received a grilling about his friendship with convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein. Astonishing, unbelievable, and toe-curling would be three others, particularly when the conversation turns to Woking’s branch of Pizza Express and Prince Andrew's claimed inability to sweat due to being shot at during the Falklands War.  

It’s the visual clues from facial expressions and body language that make an interview more watchable, and that’s what you get here as Gillian Anderson’s Maitlis locks horns with the Prince (played by a prosthetically transformed Rufus Sewell). It’s all the more effective in 4K, with those extra pixels allowing you to see the disgraced royal really squirm under the spotlight.

In this guide, I’ve carefully listed and tested, complete with images, the best streaming services for watching anime on your 4K TV. 

It turns out, most services don’t offer the 4K anime you might be looking for. However, the resolution provided still impresses on a 4K TV screen. 

Plus, I’ve taken a closer look at upscaling anime videos to see if enhancing your favorite series is worth your time and money. I also listed 5 free anime websites for budget-friendly viewing.

Currently, most anime is not available in 4K resolution, with the majority of both paid and free streaming websites offering a maximum of 1080p (Full HD) even for newly published titles. 

However, streaming anime at 1080p on a 4K TV can still provide a decent viewing experience, especially with the right streaming service. 

To help you out, I’ve personally tested several popular anime streaming services on my Sony KD-43X75K TV . 

Crunchyroll, a leading favorite among anime streaming services, surprisingly does not offer anime in native 4K resolution. 

In my tests, the highest resolution available on Crunchyroll was 1080p . Watching anime on my Sony TV, I found the image quality at 1080p to be impressively good. 

To give you a better idea, I’ve included images from my tests below.

As previously mentioned, no anime is currently available in native 4K resolution, not even on services like Netflix. However, an anime’s image clarity largely depends on its production date. 

For instance, ‘Hunter x Hunter’, released around 2011 , offers decent image quality, but it doesn’t quite match up to the visual clarity of ‘ Jujutsu Kaisen,’ which premiered in 2020 . 

Despite both series being available in a maximum resolution of 1080p, advancements in animation technology and production techniques contribute to the noticeable difference in image quality.

There are many ways you can upscale video images today, with numerous tools and software available that allow you to improve the image quality of your videos. 

In this demonstration, I’m using the CapCut tool, which leverages AI to upscale a 1080p anime video to 3840 x 2160. 

The upscaling process took me about 40-50 minutes to complete. And here’s the result: you can actually see the difference between the video before and after upscaling. 

The image quality is definitively better.

1. Crunchyroll – Available Worldwide .

Crunchyroll is a fan favorite among anime fanatics. It is one of the best websites to watch anime online.

Its budget-friendly premiums feature an extensive library. You will find different language options for both its spoken audio and subtitles. You can also watch your anime in HD with flawless playback. 

This site also offers more than just anime. On Crunchyroll, you will also find other videos like the latest in the drama genre. The site even provides subscribers with manga.

The site is not just for streaming. It is an entire online community that offers the latest news in recently released anime or those still in the works that might interest you. 

On Crunchyroll, you will also have access to discussion forums filled with others who share your interests in anime. You can discuss the latest developments and review the show’s latest episodes with your fellow anime fans on the site’s community forum. 

Given all that the site offers its subscribers, it is a paid subscription. It does, however, offer potential users a free 14-day trial but packs on the ads during the trial.

2. Funimation – Available in North America, Australia, the United Kingdom, and Ireland .

This on-demand streaming site charges a small premium for full access to its massive library. It offers a diverse range of TV shows and movies. 

Its premium subscription also features little to no ads to enhance the viewer experience. 

Funimation also offers free streaming to people who do not want to shell out for a monthly subscription. However, its free library has more limited options available. 

The site has a broad fan base within its select region, but it is yet to be available worldwide. 

Netflix, well-known for its vast array of movies and TV series, also offers a selection of anime. 

However, Netflix’s anime catalog may not rival the extensive libraries found on dedicated anime streaming services. Despite this, Netflix features trending series such as ‘ One Piece ,’ ‘ Naruto ,’ and ‘ Pokemon ,’ catering to fans seeking popular titles.

It’s important to note that since anime in native 4K is currently non-existent, opting for Netflix’s standard Full HD subscription plan is sufficient for enjoying your anime binge sessions. 

Upgrading to a 4K plan specifically for anime won’t enhance your viewing experience, given the available content’s resolution.

From my perspective, free anime websites are not highly recommended. 

One major concern is image quality; renowned paid services often offer anime in 1080p, providing significantly better viewing experiences than free sites. 

More importantly, security around user information on free sites is not as robust as on paid services. 

Moreover, if you’re a fan of watching anime on TV, I strongly recommend using dedicated streaming services over web versions. 

Web-based viewing can often lead to clunky playback or buffering issues. 

By choosing to watch anime through mainstream services, you not only enjoy a smoother viewing experience but also support the anime studios directly. The choice, of course, is yours.

Watching Anime With 4K Blu-ray Discs

Blu-ray anime discs aren’t always true 4K; many 4K Blu-ray anime titles have been upscaled from 1080p. 

Despite this, if you’re looking for the highest image quality on your 4K TV, 4K Blu-ray offers an unbeatable experience. 

It’s important to note, though, that not all anime make it onto Blu-ray, with movies more commonly available than series. 

For those interested, I’ve compiled a list of Blu-ray anime you can find on the e-commerce market.

Jay Duplass and Kelvin Yu are the latest additions to the cast of FX ‘s limited series adaptation of “Dying for Sex,” Variety has learned exclusively.

The series is based on the podcast of the same name. Duplass and Yu join previously announced series lead Michelle Williams and cast members Jenny Slate, Rob Delaney, David Rasche, and Esco Jouléy.

The official description of the series states “Molly (Williams), a woman diagnosed with metastatic breast cancer, leaves her husband of 15 years and begins to explore her sexuality. She gets the courage and support to go on this adventure from her best friend (Slate), who stays by her side all the way to the very end.”

As an actor, Duplass is known for his roles in shows like “Transparent,” “The Mindy Project,” “Industry,” “The Chair,” and “Percy Jackson and the Olympians.” Behind the camera, he and his brother, Mark, co-created the HBO series “Togetherness” alongside Steve Zissis. The brothers also co-created HBO’s “Room 104” and co-wrote and directed feature films like “Baghead” and “Jeff, Who Lives at Home” among several other collaborations.

He is repped by CAA and Odenkirk Provissiero Entertainment.

Yu is a seven-time Emmy nominee for his work on the writing team of “Bob’s Burgers,” winning the award in 2017 for best animated program. He also recently created the Disney+ series “American Born Chinese.” He has appeared on shows such as “The Afterparty” and “Master of None” as well as films like “Wonder Woman 1984” and “Milk.”
