During this course, you will learn about development and learning in children with special needs and about the role of an SNA. You will learn about child development and behaviour theories.

Delivered Through The Following Channels: Classroom: 15 weeks. Study in a classroom environment one evening a week. Blended Online: 15 weeks. Entry Requirements

The minimum age is 17 Years. All learners must have a good standard of English. Currently, the Department of Education and Science stipulates that all those gaining full-time employment in schools must have at least 3 passes at Junior Certificate or equivalent. Applicants should also indicate how they plan to obtain their work experience during the course if they are not already working in the area. As per QQI requirements, if you wish to use previously achieved modules to complete your Major Award, then they must have been achieved within the last five years. You must provide the College with copies of these certificates in order to go forward for certification once you have completed your programme of training with us. Garda Vetting Garda Vetting is a legal requirement under the National Vetting Bureau (Children and Vulnerable Persons) Acts 2012 to 2016 for the vetting of persons carrying out work with children or vulnerable persons. Students must complete the Garda Vetting process before commencing work placement. Students who have spent more than 6 months living outside of Ireland will need to provide a copy of their Police Clearance Certification for all international addresses that they have lived at, before starting placement.

SPECIAL NEEDS ASSISTING (SNA) QQI Level 5 (5N1786)

Next course commences 18 April 2024

The purpose of this award is to equip the learner with the knowledge, skill and competence in the practices and principles underpinning the role of a Special Needs Assistant.

The SNA module is typically held over 14 sessions.

SNA students must complete a minimum of 20 work placement hours to complete the module and gain QQI certification. Learners can complete a work placement in a pre-school, primary, post-primary, or special school where children with special educational needs are educated. This enables the learner to gain invaluable experience through which they will be able to apply theory to the actual practice of working as a student SNA in an educational setting.

Course outline

This SNA module is a bespoke course that goes beyond the remit of the QQI learning outcomes to ensure that our learners graduate as exceptional SNA professionals.

  • The context and history of SNA provision in Ireland.
  • Inclusion & equal opportunities.
  • Legislation pertaining to special education and disability.
  • The role of the SNA in accordance with the Dept. of Education and Skills.
  • The qualities and skills necessary to work as an effective SNA.
  • The importance of maintaining professional relationships with all members of the multidisciplinary team.
  • The role of SNA in facilitating activities of daily living (self-care skills).
  • Communication development.
  • Evidence-based strategies and approaches used in special education.
  • Positive approaches to behaviours that challenge.
  • Categories of special educational needs – Autism, Down Syndrome, Cerebral Palsy, General Learning Disabilities, Specific Learning Difficulties etc.

Additional Learning

  • Academic writing and referencing skills.
  • Critical thinking and reflection skills.
  • CV/Interview skills workshop (Saturday session).

Learners will have the opportunity to enhance their learning and CVs by enrolling in additional professional development optional workshops when available. These workshops, with the exception of TEACCH, are typically 3-6 hours in duration and delivered over one Saturday or 1-2 evenings:

  • Lámh Sign Language (Module 1: The Alphabet plus 100 signs)
  • TEACCH Autism Program *held over 5 evenings – Zoom
  • PRAISE Behaviour Support
  • Fundamentals of Symbol-Based AAC

SNA Sessions will be held as live Zoom classes.

Please be assured that the live Zoom format is very different from an online distance learning course whereby participants would work through course notes independently. We emulate what we do in a face-to-face class during each LIVE Zoom session including lectures, PowerPoint presentations, discussions, videos, break-out rooms for small group work sessions and discussions etc.

Saturday Workshops

This course is assessed through two written assignments or alternative video presentations.  As part of our active inclusion strategy, students may submit video presentations as an alternative to the written assessment. While there is a significant amount of work involved to comply with academic protocols, you will receive a lot of help and support during the course on academic writing and referencing requirements. To enrol on this course, learners must have access to a PC or laptop with internet access. They must be confident in their ability to complete two word-processed assignments for a QQI level 5 qualification.

QQI Certification

The QQI certification period for this course falls in October 2024. Students on the APR-JUN programme will submit their work on/before 31July and will receive their results in October. However, students will receive a certificate of completion in June and can apply for jobs.

Mairéad McHale

Mairéad McHale is an educator in the further and higher education sectors delivering special education, disability, equality, and sociology courses. She also facilitates special education CPD training for teachers, SNAs, and other professionals in schools and organisations. In addition, Mairéad worked for over 12 years in both a special school and in autism classes (within a mainstream school).

Mairéad’s formal qualifications include an Advanced Certificate in Psychology, a BA (Hons) Community Studies, Higher Diploma in Further Education, a Post Graduate Diploma in Special & Inclusive Education and a Masters in Education. She has also completed QQI Level 5 Special Needs Assisting. In addition, Mairéad has a special interest in inclusive and neurodiverse education and Universal Design for Learning.

Clare Dooley

Clare Dooley is a mainstream junior infant teacher. She has over 15 years of experience teaching in mainstream classes, autism classes (within a mainstream school), and in a special school. She holds many special education CPD qualifications.

Clare’s formal qualifications include a BA, Higher Diploma in Primary Teaching, and Post Graduate Diploma in Special Education. She has a specific interest in well-being and emotional regulation.

Louise Mooney

Louise Mooney is an educator in the further education sector. Having facilitated many Special Needs Assisting courses she brings a wealth of both professional and personal experience of special educational needs to her course delivery. Louise has a specific interest in Autism Spectrum Condition and has attended many workshops that focus on managing anxiety and emotional dysregulation.

Louise’s qualifications include a BA in Mathematical Studies and Geography, Higher Diploma in Information Technology, and a Higher Diploma in Further Education. Louise has also completed both Level 5 and Level 6 Special Needs Assisting and training in Universal Design for Learning.

Further Course Requirements

To fulfil the course requirements, please note the following:

Participants need to be 21 years of age or over on 1st January of the year in which the course commences. As courses are delivered in keeping with adult education practice, participants will be expected to engage with group activities and group learning; be willing to learn through dialogue and reflection on experience, and have a level of literacy that is sufficient to complete the assessment requirements.

Progression to Further Studies

This course leads to a level 5 award on the National Framework of Qualifications and, on successful completion, participants will be qualified to work as SNAs in primary, post-primary, and special school settings.

Further study options will be explored, including progression to University level 7 and level 8 part-time and full-time programmes.

This course is designed for people working or planning to work with Children with special needs as a Special Needs Assistant.  Most special needs assistants will work in an educational setting for children with special needs, including primary and secondary school settings.

Learners will acquire knowledge, skills and competence in the role of the Special Needs Assistant, learning how to effectively relate to children with special needs. Classes are live, and not recorded, therefore you will not have access to classes outside of the designated class time. There are 6 classes per module, via one weekly 3-hour zoom session for 6 consecutive weeks accumulating to 18 hours in total. As this is a QQI accredited course, learners must attend 80% of these hours in order to receive their QQI certificate.

Dates for the next QQI Level 5 & 6 Special Needs Assisting Combined Programme have been announced. It will commence on Monday 22nd January and will run for 12 weeks in total (6 weeks for each level). The 12 sessions are scheduled to run from 7PM – 10PM online via zoom every Monday, for the 12 weeks.

– Learners must have access to a computer with sound and a working microphone

Work Experience:

There are 20 hours of work experience required per module, so 40 hours in total for the combined Level 5 & 6 SNA Programme. Learners are responsible for securing their own work experience. If any learner is having difficulty securing somewhere to complete their work experience, please let us know and we will try to assist. You will be given more information on work experience by your tutor. Please do not start work experience before you start the course.

This course leads to a level 5 and level 6 minor award on the National Frameworks of Qualifications . On successful completion of the course, participants will be qualified to work as SNAs in primary, post-primary, and special school settings.

Learners who completed either their SNA level 5, level 6 or both, can also use the credits towards completing their QQI Major Award in Level 5 5M2009 Early Childhood Care & Education and/or Level 6 6M2007 Early Childhood Care & Education .

Learners can also choose to further develop their skills and their understanding of Special Needs Assisting by completing a QQI Level 7 Certificate in Special Educational Needs for Special Needs Assistants. The programme is accredited by NUI, Galway and is a recognised Department of Education and Skills (DES) qualification.

Protection for Learners

Protection of Enrolled Learners (PEL) is a legal requirement for providers, to ensure that if a programme of education and training ceases prematurely, learners will receive either training with an alternate provider, or a refund. Aspire Training has a PEL insurance policy in place should this ever happen.

Reasonable Accommodation

It is the responsibility of the learner to inform Aspire Training in sufficient time in order for a Reasonable Accommodation request to be processed, reviewed and for any necessary steps to be put in place. The process for assessing and implementing Reasonable Accommodations for assessment of learners with special requirements requires the learner to:

– Inform Aspire Training, through the registration form, of any special requirement as soon as enrolment has taken place.

– Notify their tutor or administration staff of their need for special requirement(s).

– Complete a special requirements form and return this to Aspire Training with a letter from their doctor or medical professional to confirm their needs in relation to special accommodation(s).

Yes you are covered under the College’s insurance while completing your specified hours of work placement.

How many hours work placement do I need to complete?

While you are doing the QQI Level 5 component certificates you will need to complete 30 hours work placement.

While you are doing the QQI Level 6 component certificates you will need to complete 30 hours work placement.

For those completing the combined level 5 and 6 parts of the course you will need to complete a total of 60 hours work placement.

How will I be assessed during the course?

There are no written exams required for these specific modules. Assessments are completed on a continuous method with work based projects, assignments, learner records and skills demonstrations.

Do I receive the same certification if I do the course through Part Time or Distance Learning?

What does Distance Learning programme mean?

The level 5 programme runs over 5 months.

The combined level 5 and 6 programmes run over 10 months.

When studying through Distance Learning all the materials, assignment guidelines and detailed course notes are sent directly to you. You will have a tutor appointed to you to guide you through the course. The tutor will be available by phone during specific time and also via email. You will have academic support in our head office. You will also attend for a number of Saturday Seminars over the duration of the course.

What does Part Time programme mean?

On our part time course you will attend the class once a week from 7-9.30pm.

You will attend class for 18 weeks and 3 Saturday Seminars if doing the Level 5 Component Certificates.

You will attend class for 22 weeks and 5 Saturday Seminars if doing the combined Level 5 and 6 course.

How can I complete the SNA course?

You can complete the course through two methods- Part Time and Distance Learning.

What is the current requirement in order to become an SNA?

The Department of Education and Skills current requirement is that an SNA when being employed within the school must have a minimum of 3 passes in their junior certificate or equivalent.

The Schools are looking for SNA’s to have a knowledge of different special needs and have some experience in working with children with differing needs.
