uk phd funding for eu students

Studentships and doctoral training

Get a studentship to fund your doctorate.

UKRI studentships offer funding for doctoral research. They also offer you access to training, networking and development opportunities to help you build a research and innovation career.

Our expectations for research organisations, supervisors and students are set out in the statement of expectations for doctoral training .

You could get:

  • a minimum stipend of £19,237 per year for your living costs, which is paid to you in regular instalments
  • support for your tuition fees (minimum £4,786 per year)

The stipend is usually non-taxable and does not need to be paid back. Some research organisations may offer more if you study in London, or they or one of their collaborators might decide to top up the payment. This will be outlined in the studentship advert from the research organisation.

We normally pay the support for tuition fees directly to your research organisation.

The levels given here are for the academic year 2024 to 2025. UKRI’s approach to doctoral stipend and fee levels will be reviewed through the  new deal for postgraduate research .

Additional support for your doctoral studies

As a UKRI-funded doctoral student, you may be able to access additional funding to cover the cost of other related training and development opportunities.

This could include:

  • conference attendance
  • language training
  • overseas research visits
  • internships or placements with a non-academic partner

The availability of support will depend on the research organisation and the training grants they have on offer. You should contact the research organisation you are interested in applying to, to find out what you could get.

Extra support if you have a disability

If you have a disability, you may be entitled to a Disabled Students’ Allowance (DSA) on top of your studentship.

You should speak to your research organisation’s disability advisor to assess your needs. They can help put the right support in place, including a DSA application if necessary. You cannot claim DSA directly from UKRI.

DSA helps to cover the cost of any additional support that a person studying for a doctorate might need as a result of a disability, mental health problem or specific learning difficulty.

The allowance covers:

  • non-medical personal assistance
  • specialist equipment
  • extra travel costs
  • general expenses

Find out more about DSA in our framework .

If you are a research organisation you can download claim forms and guidance for DSA .

Who can apply

Any prospective doctoral student wishing to study at a UK research organisation, including prospective international students, can apply for a UKRI studentship.

All UKRI-funded doctoral students will be eligible for the full award, both the stipend to support living costs, and home-level fees at the UK research organisation rate.

How to find opportunities

Many UK research organisations offer some form of studentship funding from UKRI. These opportunities will depend on the subject you want to study and will normally be advertised by the research organisations.

Research organisations may have additional opportunities that do not involve UKRI. UKRI supports around 20% of all UK-based postgraduate researchers. You should speak to the research organisation you are interested in to find out what studentships are available.

You could also consider using a specialist website like   FindaPhD  to look for opportunities.

When to apply

Research organisations set their own deadlines for applications.

Many open for applications early in the academic year and close in January or February. This is not a hard and fast rule. It is important that you check the deadlines for the research organisation where you want to study.

How to apply

You cannot apply to UKRI for a studentship. You must contact the research organisation you are interested in studying with and use their application process.

For doctoral students who are already studying with a studentship, there are opportunities to get additional funding to support placements that are separate from your doctorate.  Find training and development opportunities .

PhD studentships

If you're looking to get PhD funding for a specific research project or field of study, Doctoral studentships can provide you with either a partially or fully-funded PhD

Who awards PhD studentships?

PhD studentships are most commonly awarded by the UK's seven Research Councils in the form of Research Council grants , with research funding overseen by UK Research and Innovation (UKRI) .

Individual UK universities also offer scholarships and bursaries to PhD students, while many professional bodies fund Doctoral research in collaboration with these academic institutions.

For instance, research awards are offered by the following engineering organisations:

  • Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE) - QUEST scholarships
  • Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE)
  • The Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET)

Additionally, Cooperative Awards in Science and Engineering (CASE) can be part-funded by any non-academic body. These four-year PhDs require the student to work at the organisation for at least three months.

You can also apply for funded PhD opportunities through many charities, foundations and trusts, including:

  • Action Medical Research
  • Alzheimer's Society
  • British Federation of Women Graduates (BFWG)
  • British Heart Foundation (BHF)
  • Cancer Research UK
  • Diabetes UK
  • Rosetrees Trust - PhD Plus
  • The Leverhulme Trust
  • Wellcome Trust

Before you start applying for a funded PhD, it's always a good idea to discuss this with a prospective supervisor first, as they're often able to provide tips on maximising the likelihood of receiving financial support.

How much can I receive?

Many PhD studentships, including those offered by universities, professional bodies, or charities, foundations and trusts, provide three years' funding paid at a similar rate to the Research Council grant:

  • Fees-only studentship - These cover a student's tuition fees, plus any associated project and training costs (a minimum of £4,786 per year).
  • Full studentship - These add a non-repayable, tax-free maintenance grant known as a 'stipend'. In 2024/25, this is worth a minimum of £19,237 and it can be used towards living costs - see UKRI - Find studentships and Doctoral training .

For example, a University of Manchester School of Social Sciences PhD studentship includes tuition fees for three-and-a-half years and a maintenance grant of £16,062 (2022/23 rate) per year for living expenses, plus associated research costs - such as fieldwork and attending conferences - from the Research Training Support Grant.

However, you should be aware that some PhD studentship recipients are required to teach undergraduates. While this provides an excellent opportunity to gain vital employability skills, it can also be hugely time-consuming. You must be satisfied that tutoring won't negatively affect the quality of your research before accepting your place.

Is my programme eligible for a PhD studentship?

PhD studentships can start at any time of the year, but most begin in September, October or January.

Certain types of PhD, for example professional Doctorates, may not be eligible for a PhD studentship. The same applies to part-time or distance learning options.

Am I eligible?

PhD studentships typically demand that applicants have a Bachelors degree at 2:1 or above, plus a relevant Masters degree or professional experience at that level of study.

Those who already possess a PhD are often ineligible, while some PhD studentships are limited to students fitting certain criteria - for example, those from a disadvantaged background, from a certain country or of a certain ethnicity.

If you're a European Union (EU) national, you'll need to have settled or pre-settled status under the government's EU Settlement Scheme to be eligible for student finance in this country - and this includes PhD studentships.

How do I apply for a PhD studentship?

The application process can be lengthy, and competition is fierce.

Some PhD students will be automatically considered for financial support once they've been accepted by an institution, but many are required to make separate PhD funding applications. These are usually made directly to the university - even for those studentships from Research Councils, professional bodies, or charities, foundations and trusts.

You'll typically be asked for your PhD application form, a research proposal , a cover letter and your references. After the institution has reviewed your application, you may be invited to interview.

Throughout this process, the university will scrutinise what you'll bring to the institution. Applicants at Liverpool John Moores University (LJMU), for example, are judged on:

  • the quality of their research project and how it connects with research currently being undertaken at the institution
  • how appropriate the supervisory team is
  • their calibre, academic qualifications and academic/research experience
  • whether the research can contribute towards the Research Excellence Framework (REF), meaning that interdisciplinary research will be preferred.

How do I increase my chances of getting a PhD studentship?

You can improve your chances of success by:

  • asking a friend or family member to proofread your application
  • carefully choosing your referees, ensuring that they'll speak positively of you
  • discussing your draft application with a relevant academic
  • explaining how your work will be unique and innovative
  • following the funding body's guidance regarding word counts and formatting.

What other PhD funding is available?

If you're unsuccessful with your PhD studentship application, you could consider:

  • crowdfunding
  • employer sponsorship
  • PhD loans .

EU student advice

'We continue to be open to all international students, including those from the EU, and we value the important contribution they make to our universities.'

Michelle Donelan MP, Universities Minister

Here in the UK, a warm welcome is waiting for you

The UK is one of the most trusted and popular study destinations in the world. Every year, over 500,000 international students choose to study in the UK over other destinations, so as a student here, you will meet people from all over the world.

European students and staff are extremely welcome in the UK, and they make a significant contribution to the UK and to the success of its universities.

This page offers information and advice specific to European students about studying in the UK, following the UK’s exit from the European Union (EU).

What fees do European students pay to study in the UK?

Students from the European Union (EU), the European Economic Area (EEA) and Switzerland pay the same fees as international students in the UK.

Visit our money and budgeting page to learn more about the cost of studying in the UK as an international student.

There are some exceptions to this, including:

  • EU nationals who have settled status may still be eligible for ‘ home fee status ’ and pay the same as UK nationals.
  • Irish nationals living in the UK or the Republic of Ireland are treated the same as UK students for fee and funding purposes, due to the UK-Ireland Common Travel Area agreement.
  • UK nationals living in the EU, EEA and Switzerland may continue to be eligible for ‘home fee status’, subject to eligibility criteria.

Remember that universities can set their own fees for EU students, so always check individual universities’ funding pages to see how much you’ll pay as an EU student. Some universities offer discounts to students from the EU. If you’re unsure what fees you should pay, contact your university for advice.

EU students without settled status are no longer eligible for UK student loans.

Visit our scholarships page to find out more about the options available to you for funding your studies in the UK.

Do European students need a visa to study in the UK?

Unless you have settled status , it is most likely you will need a visa to study in the UK.

Visit our student visas page to learn everything you need to know about applying for a visa to study in the UK as a European student.

If you arrived in the UK before 31 December 2020, and you have settled status , you don’t need a visa to study in the UK.

Immigration Health Surcharge

If you are a student from the EU or Switzerland coming to study in the UK for longer than six months, you will need to pay the Immigration Health Surcharge (IHS). However, you may be entitled to a full or partial reimbursement (refund) of the surcharge. Download this information pack to check if you are eligible.

Can European students still come to the UK on the Erasmus+ exchange programme?

The UK no longer participates in Erasmus+. Read more about the UK's withdrawal from Erasmus+ .

For the latest information on Erasmus+, visit the UK National Agency website .

Can European students stay in the UK after graduating?

There are lots of options available to you if you want to stay and work in the UK after you graduate.

The length of your student visa will depend on the duration of your course, but will usually end within a few months of finishing your course, so it is likely you will need to apply for a different visa to remain in the UK.

The Graduate Route welcomes international students to apply to stay in the UK and work, or look for work, upon graduation. International students who have successfully completed an undergraduate or master’s degree can apply to stay in the UK for up to two years after their studies. PhD graduates can apply to stay for up to three years.

Other types of visa may better suit your situation. Learn more on our after your studies pages .

If you arrived in the UK before 31 December 2020, and you have settled status , you have the right to live and work in the UK as part of your status.

The number of PhD students winning UK research council funding has fallen sharply in recent years, according to data that shows that domestic candidates are increasingly being squeezed out by international applicants.

Figures obtained by Times Higher Education show that UK Research and Innovation funding councils supported 5,580 doctoral starters in 2021-22, down 18.4 per cent on the 2018-19 total of 6,835. Figures for 2022-23 indicate an even sharper drop – down 28.3 per cent to 4,900, although UKRI said that this tally could increase as research organisations submit further details of new recruits.

The declines are particularly steep among British students. In 2018-19, UKRI supported 4,815 doctoral candidates from the UK alone, but by 2021-22 this had fallen by 29 per cent, to 3,420. The 2022-23 figure provided, 2,840, indicates a 41 per cent drop over five years.

Total UKRI-funded doctoral candidates commencing studies by academic year

graph showing total UKRI-funded doctoral candidates commencing studies by academic year, 2018-19 to 2022-23

The shifts coincide with UKRI’s decision to extend full PhD studentships to international students, which came into effect in 2021-22. The previous year, when they were eligible for fees-only awards, 345 students from outside the UK and the European Union started publicly funded PhDs in the UK. This then tripled to 1,020 in 2021-22 and, according to the 2022-23 data, 1,055.

While international students made up 6 per cent of UKRI-backed starters prior to the policy change, they now represent 22 per cent. Meanwhile, the UK proportion has fallen from 70 per cent in 2018-19 to 58 per cent in the latest data. The share of EU students has fallen also, from 21 per cent – 1,420 students – in 2018-19, to 16 per cent – 780 students – in 2022-23.

UKRI, which funds about one in five of the estimated 105,000 doctoral students in the UK, caps the proportion of international PhD students it funds at 30 per cent.

Daniel Rathbone, deputy executive director of the Campaign for Science and Engineering, said the decline in UKRI-backed PhD starters was troubling given the UK’s ambitions to find an additional 150,000 researchers and technicians by 2030, as outlined in its 2021 R&D People and Culture Strategy .

“To meet the government’s ambitions to be more research-intensive, the UK will need a substantial increase in researchers. It is worrying, therefore, to see the number of students starting UKRI-funded PhDs has fallen in recent years,” said Dr Rathbone.

“We would urge the government to make sure that UKRI has the necessary funding for PhD studentships, and for students to be well supported during their studies.”

The data, which was provided following a Freedom of Information request, shows that the declines in the number of UK PhD students supported were particularly pronounced at certain research councils. At the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council, the UK total was down to 1,445 in 2021-22, and 1,150 in 2022-23, compared with the 2018-19 figure of 1,980. At the Medical Research Council, the number of UK students supported has almost halved from 325 in 2018-19 to 195 in 2021-22 and 180 last year.

The data is also likely to raise further concerns over PhD funding provided by the Arts and Humanities Research Council, which announced in September that it would cut the number of doctoral students it supports by a quarter , to 300 a year. In 2018-19, it supported 1,010, of which 660 were from the UK, while the 2022-23 data puts the overall total at 660, with 355 of these from the UK.

“Anyone who cares about the arts and humanities should be concerned about these figures,” said Andrew McRae, dean of postgraduate research at the University of Exeter .

“With only 355 places to UK arts and humanities applicants in 2022, and with more cuts to come, I wonder how long I can reasonably look talented undergraduates in the eye and encourage them to take on the additional debt repayments that will come with a master’s loan, in the hope of getting a foothold on the academic ladder.”

Professor McRae said that while he was “broadly supportive of an internationalised field of [postgraduate researchers] being supported by UKRI”, opportunities for domestic students were now “seriously constrained” and further reflection may be needed.

“We risk seeing some research areas becoming non-viable,” Professor McRae added. “I’m not seeing any coordinated thinking about the future academic staffing and research base for UK universities.”

In its recent publication, A New Deal for Postgraduate Research , UKRI said that it would keep its support for international students “under review”. In a statement, it said that 2018-19 was a “particularly high year for doctoral enrolments in the UK”.

“UKRI continues to work with the sector to monitor the rate of doctoral studentships and consider how best to invest public money that ensures students are appropriately supported and we can meet the government’s ambitions,” UKRI said.

Scholarships for EU students in the UK

uk phd funding for eu students

Before Brexit, EU students paid the same tuition fees as UK students, but students newly arrived from the EU starting university this year will be paying the same as International Students making a considerable difference to the cost of studying in the UK for EU students.

Funding support is still available

If you are an EU student thinking about coming to the UK to study, this year could be a good time to come. Despite Brexit and in fact, because of Brexit, many universities are this year offering “ EU transition scholarships”. These scholarships have been designed to ease the transition for EU students from UK fee status to International fee status and in some cases, they are offering the equivalent discount so that the fees are the same as they would have been before Brexit. These scholarships are valid for the duration of your degree and not just the first year.

Unfortunately, EU students will no longer be eligible for UK student loans, so you will still need to find an alternative way to fund your studies.

Here are some examples of what is being offered, but make sure to check out each university you are interested in studying at, to see if they are offering something similar. You can view these scholarships on the Funding Hub .

EU Transition Scholarship – Lancaster University

£7,000 a year is offered for Undergraduate and Postgraduate study to EU students whose Fee Status is International for courses starting in 2021

EU Transition Bursary – Coventry University

A fee reduction from International Fees to UK Fees for students domiciled in an EU member state.

EU Transition Award – University of the Arts London

A fee reduction of up to £10,000 per year for all eligible EU students who have been affected by the immediate impact of Brexit.

EU Bursary – Reading University

In order to support EU students through the transition period from Home fee status to International fee status, a bursary of up to £6000 is being offered to all eligible students resident in the EU commencing their studies in the 2021/22 academic year.

The EU Scholarship – Dundee University

A bursary of up to £6000 is being offered to all eligible students resident in the EU commencing their studies in the 2021/22 academic year.

EU Scholarship Scheme – University of South Wales

All EU students will qualify for this award and the scholarship awarded will ensure that the tuition fees paid do not exceed the amount being paid by Home students for the duration of study

How to obtain funding in Europe as an international PhD student?

itn_msca_phd

There are plenty of opportunities for international candidates to do their doctoral training in Europe as part of a MSCA Innovative Training Network (ITN)

MSCA ITN are part of the Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions (MSCA). This is a budget line in the EC's Framework Programme for Research, Science and Innovation - currently called HOIRZON 2020 - which is earmarked for activities that equip researchers with the necessary skills and international experience for a successful career, either in the public or the private sector.

Each MSCA Innovative Training Network (ITN) brings together universities, research institutes and other sectors from across Europe (and the world) to train researchers to doctorate level to become future leaders in their field.

The aim of each MSCA ITN is to train a new generation of creative, entrepreneurial and innovative early-stage researchers able to face current and future challenges and to convert knowledge and ideas into products and services for economic and social benefits.

MSCA ITNs are a great opportunity for European and international researchers to obtain world-class PhD training!

There are three types of Innovative Training Networks:

1. European Training Networks (ETN)

Researchers gain experience of different working environments while developing transferable skills.

2. European Industrial Doctorates (EID)

Joint doctoral training delivered by at least one academic partner entitled to award doctoral degrees, and at least one partner from outside academia, primarily enterprise. Each participating researcher is enrolled in a doctoral programme and is jointly supervised by supervisors from the academic and non-academic sector, where they spend at least 50% of their time.

The aim is for the doctoral candidates to develop skills inside and outside academia that respond to public and private sector needs.

3. European Joint Doctorates (EJD):

A minimum of 3 academic organisations form a network with the aim of delivering joint, double or multiple degrees. Joint supervision of the research fellow and a joint governance structure are mandatory. The aim is to promote international, inter-sectorial and multi/interdisciplinary collaboration in doctoral training in Europe.

Who can apply and how?

Each MSCA ITN creates a number of specific PhD positions each looking for a candidate with a specific profile (think of it as a job advert). Importantly, all open PhD positions are advertised on the EURAXESS jobs portal : https://euraxess.ec.europa.eu/jobs/search .

PhD positions on MSCA ITN are open to early-stage researcher (ESR). This means researchers in the first four years (full-time equivalent) of their research careers who have not been awarded a doctoral degree. Full-time equivalent research experience is measured from the date when the researcher obtained the degree entitling him or her to embark on a doctorate – either in the country in which the degree was obtained or in the country in which the researcher is recruited – even if a doctorate was never started or envisaged. Part-time research experience is counted pro-rata.

uk phd funding for eu students

In the jobs portal you can use the research tools to refine your search. In the menu shown in the figure above you can select your research field, the sector in which you would like to be recruited, as well as your preferred destination country.

Remember that the positions offered by MSCA ITNs are open only to researchers who fall in the category of ESR and are part of the H2020/Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions.

Among the partners that form the Innovative Training Networks, international and intergovernmental organisations and large companies are generally not included, therefore applicants should be careful when selecting their preferred sector, to avoid making the research results excessively limited or null.

Where do I apply?

Remember: Applicants apply for the position of their choice directly to the respective MSCA ITN that has advertised the open vacancy!

Each vacancy contains information on the training network (which institutions are involved?, in which countries are the network partners based? what is the research focus of the network?), information on the open PhD positions, the eligibility criteria, the application and selection process. Each post will also contain a link to the hompage of the ITN that has posted the offer for interested candidates to find out more ot to get in touch for further details.

Three MSCA Fellows from ASEAN share their experience, tips & advice:

Dr Wicak Ananduta, post-doctoral researcher at the Delft Center for Systems and Control (DCSC) at TU Delft in the Netherlands

Ms Vanessa Xavier, final year PhD student in the area of molecular mechanisms at the University of Geneva in Switzerland

Ms Gladys Langi, PhD candidate at the Medical University of Bialystok, Poland
