Degree entry requirements: Doctor of Philosophy (Science)

Applicants for a PhD (Science) program MUST hold a Master's degree or a Bachelor's degree with First Class Honours from the University of Sydney or an equivalent qualification from another university or institution. Degree entry requirements: Master of Philosophy (Science)

Applicants for a MPhil (Science) program should hold a Bachelor's degree or an equivalent qualification. Degree entry requirements: Graduate Diploma in Science

The Graduate Diploma in Science provides an alternate entry qualification for PhD. It is identical in content to the Honours (4th year) course and is available to candidates who are not eligible to enrol in that course, usually because of their background in Mathematics or Statistics from outside the University of Sydney. Scholarships

• domestic students have to submit two separate applications: the PhD/MPhil application and the scholarship application,
• international students only click the relevant box in their PhD/MPhil application.

Study abroad and student exchange

Study abroad and student exchange are the two main program options for students enrolled at international universities and looking to study at the University of Sydney as part of their degree.

• As an exchange student you remain enrolled full time at your home institution while you attend the University of Sydney. While you are in Sydney you will continue to pay your usual tuition fees and other student fees to your home institution. A student from the University of Sydney will do the same in reverse, and the result is an exchange of students and places.
• Study abroad is a separate program from student exchange and involves a student enrolling and paying fees directly to the University of Sydney. There is no reciprocal exchange agreement.

Mathematics and Statistics at Sydney

The School of Mathematics and Statistics offers a postgraduate program that is varied and flexible, catering for students of many different backgrounds. The School supports a policy of active research and insists on the highest standards of academic achievement. At present, the School consists of four research groups: Applied Mathematics, Mathematical Statistics, Nonlinear Analysis and Pure Mathematics. The Pure Mathematics group is further divided into three subgroups: algebra, computational algebra, and analysis, geometry & topology.

The School holds regular seminars, workshops and conferences that ensure that its members stay abreast of latest developments. It also supports an active program of long term and short term visits by distinguished international academics.

The School has all the facilities of a well established and progressive teaching and research institution, including a modern library and an extensive computer network of workstations. In addition the network supports a number of high-speed processors and colour graphics systems. A wide variety of software packages is available including Magma (developed in the School), Spida, S-plus, Reduce, Mathematica and Matlab.

The School is proud of its postgraduate students. Our research students are a valuable resource and the School is committed to providing them with excellent research facilities and office space in which to work. Some financial aid is available to students to allow them to attend relevant conferences and workshops. Further support is offered in the form of part-time teaching, assignment and examination marking.

Bryan Kohberger's attorneys face deadline to submit alibi details for night of Idaho murders

LATAH COUNTY, Idaho -- Attorneys for accused killer Bryan Kohberger have until Wednesday to formally submit documents related to his alibi for the night of the Idaho college murders.

The judge requested that Kohberger's lawyers provide additional details about the former PhD student's alibi the night four University of Idaho students were stabbed to death in an off-campus home.

Over the summer, Kohberger's lawyers claimed in a court filing the suspected murderer was instead driving around alone -- as he often did -- in the late evening and early morning hours when the murders were committed in November 2022.

They added he is not claiming to be at a specific location at a specific time and said they had no specific witness to say precisely where he was at each moment.

The judge entered a "not guilty" plea on the Pennsylvania native's behalf.

The lack of details and inability to corroborate Kohbeger's whereabouts were criticized by Latah County's top prosecutor Bill Thompson, who called the alibi "vague."

The judge agreed, referring to it as a "so-called alibi" and "not really an alibi."

"If Bryan Kohberger does not present an alibi, the defense is going to have to rebut the information and the evidence the state is putting forth, because if he doesn't have an alibi, then he could potentially have been at the murder scene," said Channa Lloyd, an ABC News legal analyst and managing partner at the Cochran Firm.

The parents of victim Kaylee Goncalves told ABC News in part that they are "...frustrated by the delays that are ongoing in this case." and that they are awaiting the alibi information.

Kohberger's attorneys also need to provide a witness list and any evidence they want to present at the change of venue hearing next month, which is something the Goncalves family hopes is denied.

No trial date has been set yet.

Admissions requirements

To be eligible for admission, you are required to have:

• a three year Australian bachelor’s degree in a cognate discipline* with a minimum credit average (65 percent), or
• the University of Sydney Graduate Diploma in Data Science with a minimum credit average (65 percent), or a qualification deemed to be equivalent, or
• completed 24 credit points of the University of Sydney Graduate Diploma in Data Science or Graduate Certificate in Data Science with a minimum credit average (65 percent). The 24 credit points must include 12 credit points of Data Science Core units and 12 credit points of Data Science specialist elective units.

If you have the equivalent of an Australian AQF Level 8 degree or above in a cognate discipline, you may be eligible for a Reduced Volume of Learning (RVL) of up to 24 credit points or 0.5 years/one semester.

*Cognate disciplines include computer science, data science, mathematics, statistics, engineering, physics, economics, finance or other disciplines that are deemed cognate by the program directors.

If you do not meet the requirements for degree admissions but have qualifications in areas such as health or education, you may apply to the Graduate Certificate or Graduate Diploma programs.

Doctor of Philosophy

A Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) at UNSW Science will lead you to make a new and original contribution to your chosen scientific specialisation. The PhD is a program of specialist expert knowledge which will open doors to academic, research and professional roles nationally and internationally. 

Entry requirements 

The minimum entry requirement for admission to a PhD includes: 

• an appropriate UNSW bachelor degree with upper second-class honours; or 
• a completed Masters by Research from UNSW with a substantial research component and demonstrated capacity for timely completion of a high-quality research thesis; or 
• an equivalent qualification from a tertiary institution as determined by the Faculty Higher Degree Committee (HDC). 

The minimum requirement for a UNSW scholarship with admission to a PhD include: 

• a four-year bachelor degree with honours class from an Australian institution or equivalent research qualification experience -this qualification must be awarded in a field relevant to the proposed area of research. 

English requirements  

All applicants must provide evidence that their English language ability meets the minimum requirements for admission: UNSW English Language Requirements.

Domestic students: The Australian Government's Research Training Scheme (RTS) provides Commonwealth-funded higher degree by research (HDR) candidates with an exemption from tuition fees for the duration of their PhD by research for a maximum period of four years' full-time equivalent study. Domestic students are liable for the UNSW Student Services Amenities Fee. 

International students: Full details can be found on the GRS Fees and Costs page for International Postgraduate Research Candidates. Note that international students are exempt from the UNSW Student Services Amenities Fee.

The sweet (and spicy) taste of victory—National Honey Board funds a food science development competition at Purdue

S weet, syrupy, golden liquid twirls over the end of grooves in wooden wands and into everything from yogurt to baklava to fresh, steaming sopaipillas. It’s no secret that honey is more than a spoonful of sugar, but the National Honey Board says that American consumers prefer it over any other sweetener on the market.

Each of the 10 teams had to have at least one food science student on board, and several teams included students from across Purdue University. For example, agricultural and biological engineering major Siddharth Kumar, got involved after hearing about the competition through a friend’s Instagram. He joined another agricultural and biological engineering major, Alvin Cai, and two food science majors, Hayley Wong Liong and Sam Weber, to form the team “Ya like jazz?”

Team leader Wong Liong said, “We fermented our honey with garlic and we decided to combine that with gochujang, which is a red chili paste from Korea. We wanted something trendy, and K-pop music and Korean dramas are bringing in the soft powers from Korea. If so many people are being exposed to those foods, why not capitalize on the market?”

Her teammate Kumar added, “Fermenting the honey and garlic extracts more flavors, and it can change the color and viscosity, or thickness, of the sauce.”

Ya like jazz?’s gochujang honey sauce is designed with fried foods in mind. Whether it’s wings or vegetarian options like tofu, the umami flavors from the garlic honey and the heat from the red chili paste are sure to maximize the potential of every bite.

Graduate students were also welcomed to compete in the competition. Hansel Mina and Adriana Vanegas Torres, both PhD students in food safety and microbiology, are also labmates in Amanda Deering’s lab and named their team “Le parce” (translating to “The good friends”) as a testament to their shared Latin American heritage and friendship. 

Mina and Vanegas created a multipurpose sauce that can be used as both a salad dressing and a meat marinade. Its flavor profile centers around passion fruit, a tropical purple fruit filled with black seeds and a tart, bright yellow pulp. 

“With the honey, the passion fruit gives our sauce a sweet and acidic taste,” Mina said. “It tastes like Argentinian chimichurri with a touch of the tangy tropical fruit.”

While this experience was similar to their lab work together, they enjoyed having fun and experimenting without the pressure of data and deadlines. This competition also gave them ideas for their next steps after graduate school. As Mina prepares to take on a United States Agency for International Development grant in Peru aimed at adding value to their passion fruit crop with products much like the sauce he and Vanegas made, he knows this experience will benefit him long into the future.

Manya Kadiwala, a freshman in food science, reached out to coordinator Caffee to see if there was anyone else looking for a team. He connected her with a senior in her major, Melissa Suarez, and a PhD in food science, Anurag Pujari.

Team “Aji chumbo” was born from valuing different perspectives. The namesake comes from Panama, where aji chumbo peppers are used to make a jam.

“I’m from Panama, and in Panama, we don’t eat spicy food. We have certain peppers we use to flavor food—just not for hotness,” Suarez said. “We have this jam called, ‘aji chombo jam,’ that we use to put on meats or crackers. It’s a perfect combination of sweet and heat.”

While aji chombo peppers are too difficult to get in the United States, the jam served as inspiration for their condiment development. They found a close match in habanero peppers and used fresh-squeezed orange juice and honey to mask the heat. 

Teammate Pujari said, “The citrus here brings in more depth of flavor and can tenderize meat if it’s used in a marinade.”

The teams had to develop and create a new condiment in a couple months with a budget of $500. They also had to make a process flow chart about their operations, draw up ingredient and product labels and write a two-page essay on the health benefits of honey. 

The teams presented their findings and final products to a panel of judges, including representatives on the National Honey Board and professors from food science and agricultural economics, on April 10. All the students retain their intellectual property rights and can take the project to patents and commercialization if they so choose. 

Keith Seiz from the National Honey Board said, “I was so impressed and surprised by how all 10 teams made something completely different. Some had drawn on global flavors, others had interesting takes on classic condiments and still others came up with new kinds of products entirely.” 

The next day, the winning three teams were announced in the Nelson Hall of Food Science in front of an audience of industry sponsors. Third place was given $2500, second $5000 and first $7500, awards that would be split evenly amongst each team’s individual members.

The team “Sweet Stingers,” composed of all freshmen in food science, took home third place for their garlic honey ranch. 

“We wanted to do a twist on a midwestern classic, and our sauce makes a great dip for wings or a topping for pizza and salads,” said team member Ana Crane.

The group's leader Wong Liong said the biggest thing they had learned together from the competition was, “When you have a creative idea, you should always try it.”

After receiving the award and before walking out of Nelson Hall, team member Kumar expressed his gratitude towards Keith Seiz and the National Honey Board for sponsoring the competition. His teammate Cai agreed and told his team, “I’m just so glad I got to work with you all.”

Is NET Suitable for Assessing PhD Admissions?

An  MCQ -based exam does not comprehensively test a candidate’s research and analytical skills.

The University Grants Commission (UGC) announced a new set of guidelines for PhD admissions via a public notice on 27 March 2024. These guidelines were approved following an expert committee’s recommendations in the 578th meeting of the UGC held on 13 March 2024. The UGC’s guidelines, which will be applicable in India from the academic session 2024–25 onwards, have stated that PhD admissions will now be based on the National Eligibility Test (NET). This examination is held twice a year, in June and December, and is conducted by the National Testing Agency.

Following the introduction of a single national entrance test known as the Common University Entrance Test (CUET) for undergraduate and postgraduate education, the UGC has now introduced a single common entrance test for PhD admissions as well. This decision follows the implementation of the National Education Policy 2020, which recommended single common entrance tests for all levels of higher education. Typically, most candidates appear for the NET during their master’s degrees, and those who clear this exam are eligible to get appointed as assistant professors in colleges and universities after the completion of their master’s degree. Moreover, a select number of candidates who clear the NET are awarded the Junior Research Fellowship (JRF). 

These guidelines will classify NET candidates into three categories from June 2024 onwards. First would be those who are eligible for (i) admission to a PhD programme with JRF and (ii) appointment as an assistant professor. Second would be those candidates who are eligible for (i) admission to a PhD programme without JRF and (ii) appointment as an assistant professor. Third would be those candidates who are eligible for admission to a PhD programme only without getting selected for the JRF or being eligible for appointment as an assistant professor. 

This move by the UGC is based on the rationale that most students who aspire to pursue a research degree appear for NET, apart from appearing in the separate entrance tests of individual universities. This requires a student to appear for as many entrance tests as the number of universities they are applying to for their PhD programme. All these entrance tests have their separate application procedures, with mandatory application fees and designated examination centres in select cities all over the country. Appearing for several such tests for pursuing a PhD programme tends to be an expensive affair, if one adds the application fees and costs of travelling and boarding, as is the case for most students coming from rural or semi-urban areas. The UGC’s rationale is that the introduction of a single common entrance test will resolve the problem of candidates appearing for multiple entrance tests and incurring a hefty financial expenditure in the process. Formally speaking, this move will indeed reduce the financial burden incurred in appearing for multiple entrance tests, thus potentially making the process of PhD admissions more inclusive and affordable for many students in India.

However, it has also been pointed out how the NET exam, which has only multiple-choice questions (MCQs), is a poor index for assessing the skills required for admission into a PhD programme. MCQs typically test a candidate’s information retention skills, which do not necessarily give a comprehensive picture of a candidate’s research and analytical abilities. Such a move also ignores the global best practices associated with PhD admissions, where admission committees consider a candidate’s research proposal, curriculum vitae, and statement of purpose to assess their suitability for respective PhD programmes.

The essence of this procedure of PhD admissions is that it pays less attention to rote learning and information retention skills and more attention to research and analytical skills. Although these practices are also beset with the problem of exclusion, since most universities charge considerable application fees (more so for international students), it at least provides a window to the protocols adopted in universities where assessing a candidate’s potential for research is the primary criterion in PhD admissions. Even the civil services examination, which selects bureaucrats and administrators at both the union and state levels, largely follows a pattern of assessment where the analytical skills of a candidate are thoroughly tested via several long-form writing-based papers, along with an initial MCQ-based paper, and finally an interview stage. However, it is ironic that an examination that would henceforth assess a candidate’s suitability for doctoral research in India has given up on assessing their analytical abilities through any long-form writing-based tests. After all, long-form writing is an essential skill required for doctoral research, and a lack of this component in the NET exam would prove to have adverse implications on assessing and developing the research capabilities of Indian PhD scholars.   

Moreover, it has also been pointed out how there has emerged a burgeoning coaching industry around preparing students for NET in several big and small cities in India. By making this exam mandatory for PhD admissions, one can expect this industry to get further strengthened, which will only marginalise and exclude a large majority of students who cannot afford to pay for these coaching services.

Another concern with making NET mandatory for PhD admissions is the erosion of the autonomy of universities to set up their own modes of evaluation for postgraduate and research-based degrees. While standardisation has its definite benefits in a country as large and diverse as India, the autonomy of universities to decide their modes of admissions cannot be entirely wished away. To reiterate, the global best practices regarding PhD admissions allow for more (and not less) autonomy to the universities while keeping the scope for standardi­sation minimal through standardised tests like the Graduate Record Examinations or GRE and the Test of English as a Foreign Language or TOEFL. 

The broader implications of this policy would become clearer as the first batches of PhD students admitted through NET start enrolling in Indian universities. However, it is undeniable that this policy—even if well-intentioned in its aims of reducing the administrative/assessment burden of teachers and the financial burden of students—disregards some of the key criteria and global best practices associated with assessing a candidate’s suitability for doctoral research.

Team members include Mojibola Awe , Class of 2024, Abigaile Davies , Ph.D. candidate in Pharmaceutical Sciences and third-year medical students Mikaela Ruvolo and Sreeja Varanasi from USC School of Medicine Columbia. In addition, Varanasi was named a recipient of the Best Presenter Award. 

The case titled, "Pandemics Past, Present, and Future: Emphasizing Trust & Equity in Emergency Preparedness and Response," invited students to present an implementation plan for effective response to an arising pandemic. Eleven teams from across the country with students representing various health care professions participated.

CLARION, or the Clinician Administrator Relationship Improvement Organization, is housed within the Center for Health Interprofessional Programs at the University of Minnesota and promotes the development of interprofessional relationships among health professional students through experiential learning opportunities, inspiring systems-level changes focused on achieving health for all.

Faculty advisors for the USC team thanked last year’s student team members, Kylee Yturralde, Madison Paternostro and Sydney Nicholls, for their insight and assistance in coordinating this year’s local competition. 

“They learned a great deal at the competition last year and utilized that information to make our local competition a success,” says Betsy Blake , director of Interprofessional Education at USC and clinical associate professor in the College of Pharmacy.

“As this is the first year that we have ever held a local competition and the second year ever that we have sent a team to compete, we are beyond excited about this [win].”
