Doctoral Regalia:

Gowns with velvet changes, fabric changes or piping would take +/- 6 weeks to make. If you would like to order a customized gown, but cannot wait, we may be able to send you a loaner gown at no charge, which you could return upon receipt of your custom gown.

Please note: As these gowns are individually made to order, please allow approximately 6 - 8 weeks for delivery. If you would like to order one of these gowns, but cannot wait, we may be able to send you a loaner gown which you could then return, upon receipt of your custom gown.

We recommend Full Figured (Plus sized) gowns for

• individuals up to 5 ft  2" who are over 180 pounds;
• individuals up to 5' 5" who are over 220 lbs;
• individuals up to 5' 8" who are over 240 lbs;
• individuals up to 5' 11" who are over 270 lbs;
• or any one over 320 lbs.
• Additionally, heights 6' 9" or taller are considered Full Figured.

If you fit in any of these categories, please be sure to indicate your weight together with your height, and to mention in your order that you require a plus (full figure) gown.

Mortarboards are available at no charge (with purchase of gown), however most Faculty members purchase Tams . Doctoral Tams are $92.00 with the gold bullion Tassel; or $78.50 with the silky Tassel. Tams are available in choice of four-sided; six-sided; or 8-sided models. Black doctoral Tams are generally IN STOCK in all sizes for immediate shipment. When ordering a tam, we will need to know your head size (or hat size), whether you want a 4 sided; 6 sided; or 8 sided tam, and which Tassel you want with it. Also please include the location of your school, since oftentimes, the school colors may vary within the same university, between one campus and another. If you are ordering a gown with piping, you may wish to add piping to your hood as well. The cost for a deluxe doctoral hood with piping is $145.00     Although most hoods are made to order (and therefore take +/- 8 weeks to make), if you need to wear your regalia sooner than that, we may be able to send you a loaner hood together with your Cap and Gown that you can wear until you receive your real hood. What to wear to a doctoral graduation and other faqs.

The days before a graduation ceremony are one hectic roller coaster ride for the students, their families, and the staff of the school. Feelings of excitement commingle with stresses and worries. We would like to make this hectic time easier for you, and below we have compiled some frequently asked questions regarding graduation attire and the accessories you might need. From doctoral graduates celebrating their years of hard work to a high school graduate eager to start university, the information below should be helpful in preparing for your graduation and enjoying your graduation day to the fullest.

What should I wear to a doctoral graduation?

Graduation ceremonies for doctorates are among the busiest and most highly anticipated, simply because a doctorate is the highest educational level one can get. Doctoral students should comply with the university regulations regarding what to wear on graduation day. This is because the university will naturally be anxious about sticking to tradition and making the commencement exercises flow as smoothly as possible. Parents and relatives joining the ceremony should do their best to wear semi-formal to formal clothing.

What do I need to bring?

Graduating students need to make sure their graduation robe, cap, and academic hood, stole or cord are all accounted for. Perform a double check to see that you have all these garments with you before you leave the house. Family members should do their best to ensure that they are helping the graduate stay focused and calm during this process. Mobile phones and cameras are necessary. If possible, an emergency kit containing needle, threads, double-sided tape, and other handy tools should also be brought along.

What should I do during the commencement exercises?

Graduation ceremonies are formal events, and you do not want to be the person interrupting the event. Mobile phones should be turned off or at the very least kept in silent mode. Camera flashes should be disabled unless the university declares that they are acceptable. Excited parents should stay in their seats unless otherwise informed by the ushers. The students should also be on their best behavior, especially doctoral grads who may find it hard to sit still from all the high spirits.

What should I do after the graduation ceremony?

The university may have prepared some activities for the graduates after the commencement exercises, and it is only after the formal rites are done that the students can really let loose. Graduation robes can be taken off and caps thrown in the air to celebrate this momentous occasion. However, make sure that you don’t lose your robe, hood, and cap. If you are renting them, you need to return them soon, and if you bought them from   www.GradShop.com   or elsewhere, you will naturally want to keep them for the special memories they hold for you. The after graduation party celebrations can then start, and the graduate and his or her loved ones can then enjoy the rest of day.

Ordering Your Doctorate Graduation Cap and Gown

When it comes to PhD regalia, there is a range of different gowns and accessories to choose from.

You can also order a Tudor Bonnet from us, a traditional Doctoral graduation hat. The Tudor Bonnet is soft, comfortable and features an adjustable inner headband. You can choose from a velvet or cloth fabric in black, red or royal blue.

Caps and Gowns

Caps, gowns, and tassels must be  purchased online through Herff Jones  at least 6 weeks before your chosen ceremony to ensure timely delivery and avoid rush delivery fees.

Cap and Gown Packages and Ordering Instructions

• Graduates attending a ceremony in person must  order regalia (caps and gowns) through Herff Jones .
• Order at least 6 weeks prior to the ceremony date to ensure timely delivery.
• For late orders, call Herff Jones at  800-837-4235 . Additional rush fees for late orders will apply.
• Caps and gowns are not available at the ceremony.
• Business or business causal clothing and comfortable shoes are recommended to be worn with regalia.

• Associate’s, bachelor’s, undergraduate certificate, and diploma graduates: Cap with tassel, gown, custom Purdue Global zipper pull
• Master's graduates: Cap with tassel, gown with batwing sleeves, degree-color hood, and custom Purdue Global zipper pull
• Post-graduate certificates: Cap with tassel, gown with batwing sleeves, and custom Purdue Global zipper pull
• Doctorate graduates: Cap with tassel, gown with velvet strips, degree-color hood, and custom Purdue Global zipper pull

Academic Apparel at Duke

The complete academic costume for all graduates includes a tassel, cap, hood, and gown. You should wear the full academic apparel to commencement, but should not wear the hood at the baccalaureate service. The style and color of your academic apparel depend on the degree you will receive at commencement (refer to  Hood and Tassel Colors ). For example, if you will graduate with a Bachelor of Arts degree, you would wear a navy bachelor’s gown, hood with white trim, mortarboard, and black tassel.

The apparel order deadline for students is  March 1, 2024 . If you are a doctoral student that intends to purchase your apparel, the deadline to purchase is February 16, 2024 and can be done so by contacting Jeffrey Kahlmeyer in Duke Stores at 919-684-0060. Complete this form to register for the university-wide commencement ceremony and order your academic regalia.

You may pick up your apparel during the following dates and times. Please note, that apparel pickup will be closed on Sunday, May 5.

Graduate Rental Returns

Protocol and fit.

The graduation gown should fall midway between the knee and ankle.

There are different styles and colors of hoods. At the commencement ceremony, you should wear the hood that corresponds to the degree you are receiving. If you have earned both a terminal degree and a master’s degree (a Juris Doctor and a Master of Public Policy, for example) during the same semester, march wearing the gown and hood of the highest degree and drape the other hood over your left arm.

Caps, Tams, and Tassels

Traditionally, women wear academic caps at all times, and men remove their caps during the National Anthem and opening invocation and replace them for the conferring of degrees. There is no hard rule for the position of the tassel on a mortarboard. Several institutions have adopted the practice, during commencement exercises, of requiring candidates for degrees to wear the tassels on the right front side before degrees are conferred and to shift them to the left at the moment when degrees are awarded to them.

The university is happy to consider proposals for any adornment to the commencement gown that is related to academic merit. Nonacademic adornments are not approved by the university. All adornments should be in good taste and fitting for a ceremonial occasion.
